Demolition drive in Dal Lake politically motivated: PDP Srinagar, May 11: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sunday castigated the state authorities for what it termed ‘adopting a selective approach’ in the ongoing demolition drive against illegal structures in and around Dal lake. Condemning the use of brute force against agitators Waheed said instead of listening to their grievances and making serious efforts for their
rehabilitation the ruling government is again making it clear that it has nothing to offer to the people except pain. He said though it was necessary to discourage illegal constructions and remove encroachments to restore the Lake to its pristine glory but the people living out there need to be decently rehabilitated first. Waheed said the PDP is having a comprehensive plan to safe guard the interests of not only the Dal dwellers but it will be party’s priority to restore the grandeur and glory of the Lake in its future scheme of things. Polls Chaudhary (Behrampur- West Bengal), BJP leader Jagdambika Pal (Domariyaganj), Union Minister R P N Singh (Kushi Nagar- both UP) and former minister and RJD leader Raghuvanh Prasad Singh (Vaishali-Bihar). The last phase of the campaign also saw BJP mounting an all-out war on the Election Commission over refusal of permission for Modi to address a public meeting at a spot of his choice in Varanasi. The Commission rejected all charges of bias levelled by BJP and said its decisions in Varanasi and elsewhere were unanimous. There were no differences in the Commission. Polling was by and large peaceful in the previous eight phases barring incidents of Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The country registered a record turnout of voters, surpassing the previous record in 1984, as 66.27 percent voting was reported in 502 Lok Sabha seats where polling has been conducted in eight phases that began on 7th April. The 2009 elections recorded a 57.94 percent turnout. Modi spearheaded the BJP challenge and criss-crossed the country addressing nearly 6,000 meetings, mixing traditional methods of holding rallies with innovative use of technology, ‘chai par charcha’ meetings and 3D video campaign. The Nehru-Gandhi family made a vigorous push for votes with Rahul, his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi leading the party challenge. Sonia and Rahul are contesting from Rae Bareli and Amethi in UP where the Congress Vice President is pitted against BJP’s actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani and AAP’s youth leader Kumar Vishwas. In West Bengal, prominent TMC candidates in the race are Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Dinesh Trivedi and Sougata Roy besides celebrities like actors Dipak Adhikari (Dev) and Tapas Paul. Trinamool Yuva President Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is also in the fray. On the rival side, CPI-M’s Subhasini Ali is among the key candidates. BJP nominee magician P C Sorcar (Junior) and WBPCC President Adhir Chowdhury, besides former West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta of the CPI-M and former Union minister Tapan Sikdar of the BJP, pitted against each other in Dum Dum, are the key contestants in the last phase. In Bihar, filmmaker Prakash Jha and former union minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh are among the 90 contestants.

Er Mugloo said that the meeting urged the administration to release all innocent youth who have been detained across valley particularly for the last few weeks in Bandipora, Sopore, Shopian, Srinagar and other places of valley. “The deputy commissioner Baramulla who met us yesterday has appointed committees headed by ADC Baramulla to assess the damages suffered by some families in old town Baramulla during raids carried out by police in last few days. The district administration has also assured us to look into our demand of transfer of SHO Baramulla,” Er Mugloo said. He added that the traders’ fraternities who participated in the meeting took stock of the situation, met victim families in old town Baramulla and addressed public gathering in stadium colony and Kakarhamam in old town. “The traders’ bodies pledged full support to us in our fight against injustice. Meanwhile, the police released 5 youth on Saturday evening and 10 youth including Ghulamu-Din Mir a shopkeeper, Abdul Rashid Halwaie and Omais Rasool Zargar have been released today,” Er Mugloo confirmed. He said that the DC Baramulla has assured the BTF that first class executive magistrate will be accompanying police if they need to raid any house at any point of time. “We have also cooperated saying that we don’t condone violence and we will not create hurdles in normalizing law and order situation but our houses should not be ransacked and youth should not be arrested without following the proper procedures,” he added. The BTF has also strongly condemned thrashing of voters in Baramulla, Sopore and its adjoining areas. Pertinently, the Baramulla Traders were up in arms against the alleged excesses and arrest spree during nocturnal raids in which scores of civilians were allegedly thrashed in the town. However, the police had clarified that no unlawful demands would be fulfilled. (KNS)
IGP said only three 'miscreants' were released . "Making claims that 15 miscreants were released in last two days in Baramula is absolutely wrong. We have released just three of them after they got orders from court," Mr Mir told KNS. Meanwhile, the SSP Baramula Suhail Ahmad Mir said that police will not allow miscreants to take the town to ransom. "We are not going to take any lineancy while dealing with the law and order. It is out of question to release the miscreants who are wanted in criminal offences unless they follow a due process of law. The claims made by the traders are misleading. Tarigami demands release of youth, no unnecessary restrictions Urges youth not to adopt violent means during protest Srinagar, May 11 : Terming the continuous detention of youth and political leaders in Srinagar and other parts of valley as atrocious and undemocratic, CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Sunday demanded their immediate release and asked the administration not to adopt suppressive measures including unnecessary restrictions to contain dissent.
In a statement issued to KNS, Tarigami advised the authorities to adopt more humane approach while tackling the angry and misguided youth. The youth, he appealed, should also follow peaceful means to express their concern for justice and democratic rights. The CPI (M) leader regretted that instead of facilitating a genuine democratic space to the young people, voices
of dissent, the administration by way of using harsh measures is choking and stifling the voice of people. He said digging old graves and reopening old cases against youth means the administration is not serious to learn the lessons from past agitations that led to the loss of hundreds of precious lives and incapacitated dozens in valley. “Using force and arrest
as tool to silence the dissent will not only damage and destroy careers of our youth but it will surely prove detrimental results in future,” observed Tarigami while urging the authorities to review its policies and release the youth and political leaders without any delay. He also appealed the youth not to adopt any violent means to convey their point. (KNS)

Zuma was speaking on Saturday evening after the Independent Electoral Commission announced the final results of the national elections held on Wednesday that saw the African National Congress (ANC) led by Zuma win overwhelming majorities in all but one of the nine provinces of South Africa and 249 of the 400 seats in the national assembly. Zuma will return as president for a second term. “We dedicate our victory to Madiba’s memory and pledge to continue taking forward his legacy and that of his peers and forebears working with all our people,” Zuma said as he reminded the audience that he was speaking on the day that Nelson Mandela took the oath of office 20 years earlier as South Africa’s first democratically elected president after decades of white-minority apartheid rule. The Democratic Alliance will remain the official opposition in the national assembly with 89 seats and will also be the provincial government in the Western Cape Province again, with the ANC as the official opposition there.
New party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) won 25 seats in the national assembly.
