popularity of National Conference which is growing continuously with the passage of time for its straight forwardness and selfless service to the masses. Addressing the office bearers of National Conference, Pulwama district here, the Chief Minister said that National Conference has passed through many vicissitudes and faced various challenges of the time successfully. Third Front leader and former Parliament Member, Abdul Rashid Kabli Friday said that Syed Ali Geelani is as innocent as lamb but Government is using him as a tool to enforce election boycott. “I never doubt the honesty and integrity of Geelani but at the same time it is an established fact that National Conference has released him in a planned way. Election Boycott is the conviction of Geelani but unfortunately, it helps those people to grab the power who pursue antipeople policies and suppress our youth,” Kabli told CNS adding that Geelani is a towering personality. Abdul Rashid Kabli said that criminal thinking of the government would

lead us towards disaster. “People are puzzled how and why Geelani was allowed to go to Sopore when every time Government considered him as a threat to peace. I don’t doubt Geelani, but he should also realize that NC wants him to keep people away from electoral process,” he said. Abdul Rashid Kabli on behalf of newly formed Third Front appealed Geelani to understand the criminal attitude of the Government and stop election boycott drive. Lashing out at Farooq Abdullah for criticizing Third Front, Kabli said that he is a non-serious politician. “What you can expect from Farooq Abdullah who is always indifferent towards the sufferings and problems of Kashmiri people. use ‘lethal weapons’

Srinagar, November 01: APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday expressed concern and surprise over the High Court judgment justifying the use of lethal weapons including pellet guns and Pepper gas by the forces in Kashmir. While pronouncing the Judgment over the PIL filed by the conglomerate’s legal cell, APHC Chairman said many of the important aspects of the litigation were ignored. The APHC Chairman informed a team of legal experts was minutely studying the judgment and if need arises, hurriyat would again approach the apex court of the state. Addressing a mammoth gathering at historic Jamia Masjid, Mirwaiz noted that since past 65,

especially in last 25 years, international laws were sidelined and Kashmiris were exploited on political, moral, social and religious basis, adding, while on the other hand Kashmiris have to face state suppression on economical front. Noting that government institutions were defunct on ground and have been turned into the dens of widespread corruption, APHC Chairman said the authorities have turned their aggression towards common people. Like government, Mirwaiz said now courts have also ignored certain realities while pronouncing the judgment over the lethality of pellet gun and pepper gas. He said the court has justified the use of these lethal weapons by forces and police which was a cause See Mirwaiz on Pg. 11

compliance of Corporation’s warning, said: “If these food establishments don’t abide by the law, the action will be taken against them which means a fine of Rs. 1.00 lac or imprisonment including sealing of their premises.” He informed KNS, that sofar notices have been issued to Shakti Sweets (Residency Road Srinagar), Mughal Darbar Karanagar, Modern Sweets (Residency Road) and Hollywood Bakery (Residency Road). It may be mentioned that workers at the food premises who come under direct contact with food have to demonstrate “fitness for work” certificate following concern shown by the many NGOs and government agencies that people are getting low quality and unhygienic food in the city. Dr Khan told KNS that serving notices is a part of the already ongoing food safety audit which the public health wing of the SMC is conducting in the city. This programme, he informed is based on main four points which include cleanliness and hygiene in food establishments, pest and rodent control, uniform and other related for workers and medical and health fitness of the employees working in the food joints. “We are inspecting hygienic condition of the premises but educating the food operators regarding the Food Safety Act is also necessary. Whenever we have pointed out the problems, owners of eateries have been assuring us that they will take steps. But this time, we have served notices to these food joints and if they fail to comply with our directions within a week, they may face closure of their establishments,” Dr Khan told KNS. He said it had been decided to ban the issuance or renewal of the licenses without production of the fitness certificate

bribes and issue permissions to convert residential buildings into commercial ones, and later the very same departments seal these building over the pretext of violating the master plan. APHC Chairman however, made it clear that a section of vested interests are also to be blamed who indulge in violations of building laws. This, he said, can never be condoned in terms of law and the religious teachings. The Mirwaiz said the authorities who allow such illegal constructions and the people who give favours or illegal gratifications in lieu of official permissions suiting their economical interests are equally unethical. Mirwaiz said the government and its institutions have failed on all levels. He said if any institution is active here; it is the army and police who are involved in suppressing Kashmiris by employing terror and gun. He said government was to be blamed for all antipeople policies. But, APHC Chairman noted that it was also true that Kashmiris should look inwards as well while constructing big structures. He said Srinagar was spreading on bigger scale and Kashmiris should desist from doing things which are contrary to the human and moral values.

Defectors hardly matter

W

ith the nearing of parliamentary and assembly elections, the political atmosphere is getting hot and every large and small party is busy to oil its political machinery. The political activity is picking up with every passing day as the parties are busy to organize public rallies at different places of the state to highlight their achievements and future plans. It is a positive sign that large number of people are taking part in these rallies which symbolize our democratic values. However the turnovers and defectors have also become active and are joining one party or the other to attract a lot of media attention. This trend is in reality very damaging for the democracy and the parties, where these defectors make their way. Everybody knows that these defectors have no standing in the people and their entry or exit in a party cannot make slightest difference in its political fortunes. The media hype given to these defectors is only with a motive to show that it is the popularity of a particular political party which is attracting more and more people in it. Whether it is Congress, NC or PDP all the three parties are trying to out number each other in arranging these publicity shows wherein the defectors are garlanded and welcome by senior party functionaries. People know all these political gimmicks and are not impressed by this publicity hype but are in fact going to measure all the three parties with the yardstick of their performance. It is not possible to mislead the people in this modern age when every possible technology is used to get the information about the overall performance of political parties and individuals. Gone are the days when people used to be swayed away by hollow slogans, misleading statements, unfulfilled promises by political parties for getting votes and after five years the same things were being repeated. Now the people are aware that the contribution of a government or a political party has to be seen by its performance and measured on the basis of ground realities and only then they decide whom to vote, to power and whom to throw out of it. Political parties should concentrate on their performance rather to arrange publicity shows on the entry of the turnovers and defectors and should dedicate themselves to the service of the people and mitigate their genuine problems, if they want their vote.

The Daily

J

ammu and Kashmir is not only home to the vast cultural and ethnic diversity but also the heaven for arts and crafts that have been carefully nurtured for the centuries. A variety of motifs, techniques and crafts flourished in the land as the people from different regions and many skilled craftsmen decided to settle amidst its charming abundance of natural beauty. With time, these arts have gained even more distinctiveness and today Kashmir is known for woolen textiles, embroidered suits, Kashmir silk saris, papier mache, woodcarving, hand knotted carpets and lot of other traditional arts. CARPET Kashmiri carpets are world renowned for two things- they are handmade and they are always knotted, never tufted. The yarn used normally is silk, wool or silk and wool. Woolen carpets always have a cotton base while silk usually have cotton base. Sometimes however, if the base is also in silk then the cost increases proportionately. Occasionally, carpets are made on a cotton base, mainly of woolen pile with silk yarn used as highlights on certain motifs. The soothing blend of colors makes the Kashmiri carpet a prized possession. Carpet weaving in Kashmir was not originally indigenous but is thought to have come in by way of Persia. Till today most designs are distinctly Persian with local variations. One example, however, of a typical Kashmiri design is the tree of life. The colors of Kashmiri carpets are more subtle and muted than elsewhere in the country. The knotting of the carpet is the most important aspect, determining its durability and value, in addition to its design. Basically, the more knots per square inch, the greater its value and durability. Also there are single and double-knotted carpets. A single knotted carpet is fluffier and more resistant to touch. NAMDAS Far less expensive are these colorful floor coverings made from woolen and cotton fiber, which has been manually pressed into shape. Prices vary with the percentage of wool - a Namda containing 80% wool being more expensive than one containing 20% wool. Chain stitch embroidery in woolen and cotton thread

is worked on these rugs. PAPIER MACHE Besides at least three different grades of Papier Mache, there are some cheaper versions in cardboard or wood available too. To make Papier Mache, first paper is soaked in water till it disintegrates. It is then pounded, mixed with an adhesive solution, shaped over moulds, and allowed to dry and set before being painted and varnished. Paper that has been pounded to pulp has the smoothest finish in the final product. The designs painted on objects of Papier Mache are brightly colored. They vary in artistry and the choices of colors. Gold is used on most objects, either as the only color, or as the highlight for certain motifs, and besides the finish of the product, it is the quality of the gold used which determines the price. Pure Gold leaf, which has the unmistakable luster, is far more expensive than bronze dust or gold poster paint but also has much longer life and will never fade or tarnish. Varnish, which is applied to the finished product, imparts a high gloss and smoothness, which increases with every coat. Cardboard, usually indistinguishable from Papier Mache, gives slightly when pressed firmly. SHAWLS There are three fibers from which the Kashmiri shawls are made - Wool, Pashmina and Shahtoosh. Woolen shawls are the cheapest while the Shahtoosh are the most expensive ones. Woolen shawls are popular because of the embroidery work on them, which is a specialty to Kashmir. Many kinds of embroidery are worked on shawls- 'sozni' or needlework is generally done in a panel along the sides of the shawl. Motifs, usually abstract designs or stylized paisleys and flowers are worked in one or two, occasionally three colors, all subdued. Another type of needle embroidery is popularly known. This is done in broad panels on either side of the breadth of a shawl, or covering the entire surface of a shawl. Ari or hook embroidery; motifs are well-known flower design finely worked in concentric rings of chain stitch. Pashmina shawls are unmistakably soft and its yarn is spun from the hair of the ibex found at 14,000 ft above the sea

level. Although pure Pashmina is expensive, sometimes blending it with rabbit fur or with wool brings down the cost. Shahtoosh is the legendary 'ring shawl', renowned for its lightness, softness and warmth. The astronomical price it commands in the market is due to the scarcity of raw material. High in the plateaux of Tibet and the eastern part of Ladakh, at an altitude of above 5,000 meters, roam Pantholops Hodgosoni or Tibetan antelope. During grazing, a few strands of the downy hair from the throat are shed and it is these, which are painstakingly collected until there are enough for a shawl. Yarn is spun either from Shahtoosh alone, or with Pashmina to bring down the cost. In the case of pure Shahtoosh too, there are many qualities the yarn can be spun so skillfully as to resemble a strand of silk. Not only are shawls made from such fine yarn extremely expensive, they can only be loosely woven and are too flimsy for embroidery to be done on them. Unlike woolen or Pashmina shawls, Shahtoosh is seldom dyed. Its natural color is mousy brown, and it is, at the most, sparsely embroidered. PHERANS This garment seems to be fusion of a coat and a cloak and is loose enough to admit the inevitable brazier of live coals, which is carried around in much the same way as a hot water bottle. Men's pherans are always made of tweed or coarse wool while women's pherans, somewhat more stylized, are most commonly made of raffel with splashes of ari or hook embroidery at the throat, cuffs and edges. The quality of embroidery and thickness of the raffel determines the price. BASKETS Willow rushes that grow profusely in marshes and lakes of Kashmir are used to make charmingly attractive objects such as shopping baskets, lampshades, tables and chairs and are generally inexpensive. To increase their life span, unvarnished products should be chiseled and frequently sprayed with water, particularly in hot, dry climates, to prevent them from being brittle. WALNUTWOOD Kashmir is the only part of India where the walnut tree grows. Its color, grains and inherent sheen are unique and

unmistakable, and the carving and fret work that is done on this wood is of a very superior quality. There are two types of walnut trees - the fruit bearing species whose wood is so well known, and one that bears no fruit and is locally known as 'zangul'. Zangul has none of the beauty of walnut wood, being much less strong and possessing no grain while the walnut wood is almost black and its grains are much more pronounced than the wood of the trunk, which is lighter in color. The branches have the lightest color, being almost blonde and have no noticeable grain. The intrinsic worth of the wood from each part of the tree differs - that from the root being the most expensive and the branches having the lowest price. A cheaper product is liable to warp, or in case it is taken to warmer climes, will crack or shrink. Knots are usually concealed skillfully in the sawing, as it is difficult, though not impossible, to mask them while carving. Carving is the demonstration of the carver's skill, and walnut is eminently suitable for this, being one of the strongest varieties of wood. There are several varieties of carving-deep carving usually with dragon or lotus flower motifs, two inches deep or more; shallow carving, half an inch deep done all over the flat surface; open or lattice work, usually depicting the Chinar motif; and most popularly, semi carving, which is a thin panel along the rim of a surface, with perhaps a Centre motif. The advantage of the semi-carving is that it allows the grain of wood to be displayed, together with the carver's skill. Naturally deep carving with all the skill and labor required is the most expensive. Copper and Silverware Shops in local market of the old city abound with objects of copper lining the walls, the floor and even the ceiling. One can see craftsmen engraving objects of household utility like samovars, bowls, plates and trays. There are floral, stylized, geometric, leaf and even calligraphic motifs that are engraved or embossed on copper, and occasionally silver, to cover the entire surface with intricate designs which are then oxidized. The work known as 'naqash' determines the price of the object, as does the weight.

Tobacco-The Deadliest Killer

T

obacco products are made entirely or partly of leaf tobacco as raw material, which are intended to be smoked, sucked, chewed or snuffed. All contains the highly addictive psychoactive ingredient, nicotine. Tobacco was introduced into India by Portuguese traders during AD 1600. Its use and production proliferated to such a great extent that today India is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world. Soon after its introduction, it became a valuable commodity of barter trade in India. Trade expanded and tobacco spread rapidly along the Portuguese trade routes in the East, via Africa to India, Malaysia, Japan and China. During this period, the habit of smoking spread across several South Asian countries. Virtually every household in the Portuguese colonies took up the newly introduced habits of smoking and chewing tobacco. India is one of the biggest tobacco markets in the world, ranking third in total tobacco consumption. However, the per capita consumption in the country is 0.9 kg compared to the world average of 1.8 kg. Tobacco usages in India is contrary to world trends since chewing tobacco and beedi are the dominant forms of tobacco consumption, whereas internationally, cigarette is the dominant form of tobacco use. In the late nineteenth century, the beedi industry began to grow in India. The price differential from cigarettes favoured the use of beedis and this domestic product soon supplanted cigarettes as the major form of tobacco consumption. While tobacco chewing was practiced for many centuries, commercial production and marketing have been scaled recently, with the introduction of the gutka. The rate of growth of consumption of gutka has overtaken that of smoking forms of tobacco. As a result, oral tobacco consumption has opened a new and broader front in the battle between commercial tobacco and public health in India. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey

India report notes that Khaini is the most commonly used smokeless tobacco product. Gutkha is the second most common form. The consumption of smokeless tobacco in India is also prevalent in various other forms e.g. paan with tobacco, paan masala with tobacco, Gul, Mawa, Mishri, Bajjar, Gudakhu etc, which are used as dentifrice i.e. for application on teeth or gums. Evidence shows that smokeless tobacco contains more than 3000 chemical compounds of which 29 are proven carcinogens i.e. cancer causing substances. One of the main risk factors for tobacco use is number of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. It is the single most cause of disease, disability and death. As per the recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) India Report, 2010, the use of smokeless tobacco among adult males in India is as high as 32.9% and for females it is 18.4%. Overall, 26% of the adult population consumes smokeless tobacco. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS)-India, 2009 similarly revealed that 12.5% (Boys = 16.2%, Girls = 7.2%) youth use tobacco products other than cigarettes. According to ICMR, 50% of cancers among men and 25% among women in India are related to tobacco use. Nearly 90% of oral cancers are related to use of chewing tobacco. States with high prevalence of smokeless tobacco also face the challenge of high burden of oral cancer. Besides oral cancer, smokeless

The harmful effects of smoking do not end with the smoker. Adults and children aged 3–11 years are exposed to secondhand smoke. Even brief exposure can be dangerous because nonsmokers inhale many of the same poisons as smokers. Secondhand smoke exposure causes diseases including heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more frequent and severe asthma attacks in children. Each year primarily because of exposure to secondhand smoke nonsmoking people die of lung cancer, heart disease, and children younger than 18 months have

tobacco use is also associated with cancers of food pipe, pancreas, kidney, throat and stomach. There is also increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases among smokeless tobacco users. Recently an initiative has been taken and serious concern raised over growing Gutka/Pan Masala menace in India. India has the highest number of oral cancer in the world with 75,000 to 80,000 new cases of oral cancers being reported every year and chewing tobacco and gutka contribute to 90 percent of oral cancer cases in the country. Cancer of oral cavity is frequent and common finding among the cancer patients show addiction to gutka and other tobacco products. It is observed that magnitude of tobacco related cancer in average is on an upward

trend in Eastern and North Eastern India. This is largely due to high prevalence of tobacco consumption. According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS 2010) nearly one third of Indian population is addicted to smokeless tobacco. A large number of children and youth in India are addicted to smokeless tobacco. These preparations essentially have tobacco with or without supari and are well proven to be harmful for health. Smokeless tobacco contains nicotine and direct consumption of which is highly addictive. Scientific evidence has established that tobacco chewing causes cancer of mouth, ocesophagus (food pipe), larynx and pharynx (throat), pancreas, stomach, kidney and lung. It can also cause high blood pressure and other life threatening cardiovascular conditions like myocardial ischemia, stroke etc. Consumption of tobacco may be reduced by raising the price of tobacco. It has proven to be one of the most effective strategies for preventing and controlling tobacco use. Specifically the increasing cigarette prices would decrease the prevalence of tobacco use, particularly among youth and young adults, and that increases in cigarette excise taxes would lead to substantial long-term improvements in the nation’s health. A 10% increase in the price of cigarettes is estimated to reduce consumption by nearly 4% among adults, and the potential reduction among young people and low-income populations is even higher. Evidence-based, statewide tobacco control programs that are comprehensive, sustained, and accountable have shown to reduce smoking rates, tobacco-related deaths, and diseases caused by smoking. A comprehensive program is a coordinated effort to establish tobacco free policies, reduce the social acceptability of tobacco use, promote cessation, help tobacco users quit, and prevent initiation of tobacco use. This approach combines educational, clinical, regulatory, economic, and social strategies.

Babies better at learning complex languages

Infants as young as three months of age are able to automatically detect and learn complex dependencies between syllables in spoken language, a new study has revealed. In contrast, adults only recognised the same dependencies when asked to actively search for them.

The study by scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig also highlights the important role of basic pitch discrimination abilities for early language development. The speed and apparent ease with which young infants learn the

basics of a language regularly astound parents and scientists alike. Of course, adults are usually assumed to have the edge in sophisticated language learning. However, scientists Jutta Mueller, Angela D. Friederici and Claudia Maennel have now found that when it comes to extracting complex rules from spoken language, a three-monthold outperforms adult learners. For 20 minutes, the scientists played a stream of syllables to babies while measuring their brain responses using electroencephalography (EEG). Pairs of syllables appeared together, but were separated by a third syllable. Jutta Mueller, first author of the study, stresses that "such dependencies between non-neighbouring elements are typical for

natural languages and can be found in many grammatical constructions." For instance, in the sentence "The boy always smiles", the third-personsuffix "s" of the verb is dependent on the noun "boy". In the study, this was reflected in the use of combinations like "le" and "bu" in sequences like "le-wibu". From time to time, however, combinations like "le-wi-to" would appear, in which one of the syllables was out of place. "EEG measurements showed us that the babies recognized this rule violation", Mueller said. Additionally, the scientists would occasionally change the tone of one syllable to a higher pitch - with an interesting outcome: Only those infants whose brains reacted to pitch changes in

a more mature way could detect the syllable dependencies. When facing the same task as the babies, adults only showed a reaction to the rule violations when asked to explicitly look for dependencies between the syllables. Mueller and her colleagues conclude that, evidently, the automatic recognition ability is lost later on. "What we found particularly interesting is that the small group of adults who did show evidence of rule learning also showed a stronger brain response to the pitch changes," she said. These findings not only help understand how children manage to learn language so quickly during early development, but also point to a strong link between very basic auditory skills and sophisticated rule learning abilities.

As experts deem fake tans 'dangerous', we look at other toiletries that might well be damaging your health, too. Fake tan products are far from alone in containing chemicals that research suggests can have nasty side effects. Many cosmetics are formulated with a mixture of controversial synthetic ingredients that have been linked to health problems including breast cancer, hormone disruption, fertility issues, asthma, allergies, diabetes and

birth defects. And it's this socalled 'chemical cocktail' that has some experts worried especially when you consider the huge number of different lotions and potions most of us use each day. "No one can say that if you use X, Y and Z you're going to develop cancer or diabetes," says Elizabeth SalterGreen, of a UK charity. "But an increasing amount of research suggests that high levels of certain ingredients can affect our health."

"When you take into account the sheer number of products we now use, and the fact that we're also exposed to some of these chemicals through household cleaners, food pesticides, packaging and general industrial output," continues Elizabeth, "there's a concern that this collective onslaught could take us over the safety threshold." "Our skin is not an impenetrable barrier," says author Dawn Mellowship.

The research team analysed data from the W o m e n ' s Health Study, a cohort of nearly 40,000 women, 45 years and older. In this study, researchers analysed data from 6,349 women who provided information about migraine status at baseline and then participated in cognitive testing during follow-up, according to a BWH statement. Participants were classified into four groups: no history of migraine, migraine with aura (unpleasant smell, seeing flashing lights), migraine without aura,

and past history of migraine. Cognitive testing was carried out in twoyear intervals up to three times. "Compared with women with no history of migraine, those who experienced migraine with or without aura did not have significantly different rates of cognitive decline," said Rist. "This is an important finding for both physicians and patients. Patients with migraine and their treating doctors should be reassured that migraine may not have long-term consequences on cognitive function.

Sleeping pills don`t work for 40 percent poppers London: Sleeping pills seldom worked for 40 percent of the poppers who suffer from insomnia, says a survey of 20,000 people, according to a British study. Some 42 percent of the patients currently on medication have been sleeping badly for over 11 years or more. A further 22 percent had insomnia lasting two to five years, while one in six had suffered between six and 10 years, the survey revealed.Experts said the study suggested that sleeping pills were not combating long-term sleep problems and that cognitive behavioural therapy has been proven to be more effective.Around 10 million National Heath Service (MHS) prescriptions for sleeping pills are issued each year. But NHS guidelines say they should be for short-term use only - usually for two weeks

and up to a maximum of four weeks at a time. Findings from The Great British Sleep Survey of more than 20,000 adults in Britain found we are a nation of poor sleepers. The average score of sleep quality was only five out of 10. Long-term poor sleepers were twice as likely to have relationship problems, suffer from daytime fatigue and lack of concentration. The survey also showed almost one in 10 with insomnia were on sleeping pills prescribed

by their doctor, with one in five using over the counter remedies. American research this year found sleeping pills may significantly increase the risk of premature death. The latest survey was sponsored by Sleepio, an online sleep improvement programme which uses cognitive behavioural techniques. Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, has campaigned for the NHS to highlight the importance of sleep.

Grapes good for men's heart health

Toiletries that might damage your health "It absorbs a significant amount of what we apply to it into the bloodstream and it can then be stored in the body, where it accumulates and has the potential to do harm." How to reduce your levels of chemical exposure 1.Use fewer products to reduce your overall exposure. 2. Check the label and watch out for synthetic chemicals such as parabens, formaldehyde and triclosan. 3.Don't assume organic or natural is always best. While many such products contain fewer toxic synthetic chemicals, it's still worth checking out the ingredients on a product to find out what is actually in there. 4.If there is a big long list of unpronounceable chemical names then it might be worth looking for something with fewer ingredients that you recognise.5.Pay particular attention to the products that stay on your skin the longest, such as creams and lotions.6. Swap dark hair dye for vegetablebased colours or those stating they're PPD-free.

Consuming grapes may help protect heart health in people with metabolic syndrome, a new study has revealed. Researchers observed a reduction in key risk factors for heart disease in men with metabolic syndrome: reduced blood pressure, improved blood flow and reduced inflammation. Natural components found in grapes, known as polyphenols, are thought to be responsible for these beneficial effects. The randomized, placebocontrolled, crossover study, led by principal investigator Dr. Maria Luz Fernandez and Jacqueline Barona, a PhD student in Dr. Fernandez' lab at the Department of Nutritional Sciences of the University of Connecticut, recruited men between 30 and 70 years of age with metabolic syndrome. The study is believed to be the first to look at the impact of grapes on metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together - increased blood pressure, a high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist or low HDL (the good cholesterol) and in-

The postpartum diet need not be complicated — just a mix of ageold remedies and home science The stork came and went, and left you multitudes of relatives who are telling you what to eat. They are peddling age-old remedies, while you are clutching on to your doctor's advice of no green vegetables or fruits. Iron deficiency, constipation and soreness are some of the things you may suffer, while expending more energy and needing more calcium. The best path is to try out both sets of advice and see what works for you. Ketaki Karpe-Kolgaonkar, new mother and clinical pharmacist found that 'the diet should be all about the mother's needs'. "The baby takes the nutrition it needs and doesn't need any help doing that," she says. "Watch out for bacteria from unwashed vegetables, unpasteurised milk, unfiltered water or uncooked meats." Raise calorie intake Nutritionist Dr Shilpa Joshi emphasises on the importance of wholesome meals with no restrictions apart from oil and spice, unless the doctor says so specifically. "The mother needs extra energy, at least in the first six months, be-

creased blood triglycerides - significantly increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a major public health concern, and is on the rise in the U.S. In this study, participants were randomly assigned to consume grapes, in the form of a freeze-dried whole grape powder, or a placebo powder, for four weeks. Then, following a 3-week "washout" period where neither grapes nor

cause she will be nursing the baby more often," she says. "So she needs to eat more calories, which will come from small meals, which are rich in proteins — nuts, daals and legumes." If you are a non-vegetarian, don't switch to a leafy vegetarian meal instantly. This will cause you more harm than good. Eat shredded meat in soups and broths without too much spice or oil. Pump iron Since a new mother suffers from loss of blood, her iron levels could be precariously balanced. A little spinach can go a long way. Ketaki developed low iron levels in her second trimester, and panicked. "So I started to incorporate spinach in everything such as daal, chappati dough and even in chicken curry." She continued this after the baby came, which steadied her iron levels. Milk the calcium It goes without saying that you'll need lots of calcium so that the baby can use the cafeteria uninterrupted. "If you are lactose intolerant, and can't drink milk or eat milk products, go for curd," says Joshi. "Garden cress seeds (aleev or haleem), are a rich source for calcium. Traditionally,

placebo were consumed, individuals were allocated to the alternate treatment. This powerful study design allowed investigators to compare the response of each individual to consumption of both the placebo and grapes. The study results showed that for each of the study's subjects, grape consumption resulted in significant decreases in blood pressure, improved blood flow (greater vasodilation), and

these are made into sugar-rich ladoos. If you are being careful about sugar, make a haleem kheer." Water yourself There's not much you can do to artificially stimulate breast milk, other than drink lots of fluids. Also, new mothers tend to be a little scared of the pain and resist passing urine or stools, which can result in constipation. Ordinarily, this can be resolved by medication, but because medicines will pass on the baby, it's better to take preventive action. "I used to keep a huge bottle of water and use a straw to sip it so as to not put pressure on a the C section incision," says Ketaki. Joshi also suggests ingesting fluids by drinking lots of soup, coconut water, broths, whole fruits, fresh fruit juices and milkshakes that are also easier to eat for the harried mother. "I would drink strawberry milkshake so that it didn't feel like you are adding ten things to the plate. Even eating seems overwhelming to a new mom and if she has to chew one thing less, it's a huge convenience," says

decreases in a compound associated with inflammation. "These results suggest that consuming grapes can improve important risk factors associated with heart disease, in a population that is already at higher risk," Fernandez said. This further supports the accumulating evidence that grapes can positively influence heart health, and extends it to men with metabolic syndrome," Fernandez added.

Ketaki. "Fluids help flush out toxins and medication, and help stay oriented even with the lack of sleep that comes with parenting." Yoghurt is not only a stool softener but also has the probiotics essential for keeping Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) away. Edible gum balls (dink ladoos) are a good laxative because of their combination of ghee, edible gum and nuts. "After the baby came, I would resist therapeutic Indian food without thinking about whether it was scientific," says Ketaki. "I eventually did eat one dinkache laadoo a day and that did me good. Sometimes, it pays to listen to your mother - she may know best."

Fire breaks out at Govt. printing press in Chennai Agencies A fire broke out inside the Government Printing Press in Mint

Street in the early hours of Friday. Fire fighting teams led by Divisional Fire Officer (north) Manivannan are

battling the blaze and no one is suspected to have been trapped inside. According to Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services sources, the fire alert call was received at its control room at 2.25 a.m. The caller said that thick black smoke was billowing from the press building. Seven fire tenders from different fire stations in north Chennai were rushed to the spot along with over 20 fire fighters who are still battling the raging fire. Five metro water lorries have also been pressed into action. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained as it will take

at least two hours to be extinguished completely, TNFRS sources added. The printing press is a singlestorey heritage building built during the British era and stands on over 10 grounds on Mint Street. Three pillars inside the building have collapsed and the roof may give way soon. Firemen are not ruling out the possibility of the building collapsing in some time due to fire and the force of the water used on it to contain the flames.“No one is inside the building and we have evacuated people from nearby buildings. The fire is spreading fast as there are bundles and bundles of paper spread in and around the building. We have managed to contain the flames within the premises and prevented it from spreading to adjoining structures,” an ADFO told The Hindu from the spot.

Patna blast suspect dies of injuries

Patna serial blast accused Ainul alias Tariq passed away at a hospital in Patna early on Friday morning. He was critically injured when the bomb, he was trying to plant, exploded on Sunday. “Ainul passed away at 1.10 a.m. He has given a dying declaration,” Jayant Kant, Superintendent of Police, Patna city, told The Hindu. However, the SP did not say if Ainul had confessed to the crime in his declaration. Ainul, a resident of Ranchi, is listed as an accused in the blast FIR. He was the planter of a bomb in the toilet of the Patna railway station. Ainul was declared arrested on the day after the blast. He suffered a brain injury in the explo-

sion and was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was seeking treatment. The police were not hopeful of his survival. Ainul’s aide Imtiaz Ansari, also the alleged mastermind of the blast, was ar-

rested while fleeing the spot after the explosion. Both were part of the first of the three groups of perpetrators to travel on a bus from Ranchi to Patna on the eve of the attacks to plant bombs at the railway station, as per the police.

It will be difficult for Congress to survive: Narendra Modi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Friday charged the ruling Congress Party of making false promises to the nation to stay in power. “Those who make false promises have no right to stay in power. They had promised to control prices in 100 days - did prices come down? They went up,” said Modi, while addressing a rally here “Those who went back on their promises must be taught a lesson,” he addedModi said the winds of change are blowing across India, and added that it will be difficult for the Congress to surviveThe Gujarat Chief Minister further charged the Congress Party of carrying out a one -point agenda against him for the past 12 years “I am standing in front of you today with god’s blessings, the people’s wishes and the strength of truth,” said Modi “They wanted the CBI to fix Modi, but now the CBI seems to have failed. And I don’t know what they will do next,” he added.Modi claimed that inflation was under control in the country under the BJP-led governments at the Centre

“In this country, Morarji Desai was the Prime Minister and BJP or Jan Sangh was a main partner. And there was Atalji’s regime. These are the only two periods where inflation was under control,” said Modi. “Whenever there was a Congress or Congress-supported government, the people had to face inflation. Shouldn’t a government in a democracy be answerable to the people?” he askedModi said the Congress is so arrogant that it is not willing to answer the media.“They keep making allegations, it has become fashionable,” Modi said “Manmohan Singh is the PM but they want answers from Modi. They are more bothered with what I did,” he added Modi promised that after coming to power the BJP will give its governance report card to the people of the country every year“I promise the people of India that when they vote for the BJP in 2014, we will present a summary of what we’ve done every year, not after 5 years,” he said. Tight security arrangements had been put in place for Modi’s rally here today against the backdrop of Sunday’s serial blasts in Patna.

I am being projected as dracula, Asaram Bapu claims in court Agencies New Delhi: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, currently lodged in a jail in Gujarat, has once again lost a petition seeking to restrain the media from reporting on sexual assault allegations against him. The 75-year-old had moved the court to stop two TV channels from airing allegedly slanderous reports about him saying they were projecting him as a “dracula who drank children’s blood.” Rejecting his plea, a bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam said it cannot ask the media not to report the information they get from police or other sources. “If some inmate says something or an investigation officer talks to the media, how can we stop them? Media is reporting what they say. We can’t stop media. You have other remedies,” Justice Sathasivam told Asaram’s counsel. Asaram moved the court against the two channels after the Supreme Court on October 21 de-

clined to restrain both print and visual media from carrying news reports about his case. The spiritual guru was arrested in August this year on charges of sexually assaulting a teenage girl

at his ashram in Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Later, two sisters who stayed at his ashrams in Gujarat accused him and his son, Narayan Sai, of rape. Asaram has denied all charges against him.

India’s highest-level participation at CHOGM sought Agencies: Ministers of some Commonwealth countries have stressed upon External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid the need for India’s active participation at the highest level in the CHOGM summit in Sri Lanka. This comes in the backdrop of debates in India over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s participation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Colombo from November 15 to 17 with political parties in South India strongly opposed to his attending the summit in Colombo. The parties allege that Sri Lanka has indulged in atrocities against ethnic Tamils. “Need was stressed by the ministers from

other Commonwealth countries, present at the IOR-ARC meet, that India should have active participation at the highest level in the summit,” official sources said. Khurshid after holding talks with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop, at a joint press conference, said he will attend the CHOGM meeting. He, however, did not confirm Singh’s participation at the CHOGM summit.Khurshid and Bishop announced their willingness to participate in the CHOGM meet and said that they will

Jayalalithaa demands rollback in diesel price hike Agencies Decrying the hike in diesel prices, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday urged the Centre to roll back the increase. The hike would lead to increase in prices and affect people, she said in a statement in Chennai and reiterated her demand for w i t h d raw i n g powers vested with oil companies to regulate fuel prices. Ms. Jayalalithaa said people are agitated over fuel price hike and cautioned they are prepared to vote out the UPA government at the Centre in the coming general election. She said despite increase in fuel prices, her government did not resort to bus fare hike in Tamil Nadu with a view not to cause hardship to people, unlike other States and took on the entire financial burden by allocating additional funds to transport corporation. Last year, the government granted Rs. 200 crore to State transport corporation and Rs. 500 crore this year, she said. Oil marketing companies on Thursday announced a reduction of Rs. 1.15 a litre in prices of petrol but hiked diesel prices by 50 paise a litre.

Uttar Pradesh CM warns of strict action against those inciting violence Agencies Promising strict action against those trying to vitiate law and order in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said the guilty would not be spared. “Strict action will be taken against those trying to vitiate law and order in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas. The guilty will not be spared. However, we will ensure that injustice is not meted out to innocents,” Yadav said. The chief minister said the DGP was keeping an eye on the situation in Muzaffarnagar. “Injustice will not be done with anyone there... Action would be taken in both the incidents that took place in Muzaffarnagar,” Yadav said. He was talking to reporters at his residence after inaugurating several schemes worth Rs 2,318 crore of Mandi Parishad. When asked about Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s statement that some riot victims from Muzaffarnagar were in touch with Pakistani intelligence agency, Yadav avoided the question saying, “Bade neta hain, badi baat kehte hain” (Rahul is a big leader, and talks big). Taking potshots at former chief minister Mayawati, Yadav said that in the previous BSP

regime goats were distributed under Bundelkhand package, but upon verification it was not found anywhere. On Congress’s allegations that UP government was not willing to implement Food Security Act, Yadav said that the party was misleading people as the scheme had to be

implemented from July next year. When asked that some beneficiaries of free laptop schemes have given online advertisements to sell them, Yadav said that whoever sold laptops would be identified by the laptop number. “However, no action will be taken against them... There are loopholes in every scheme,” he added.

Mourinho deflects praise for Chelsea form onto players “We don’t know in this format what is a bad performance. 10 overs 80 is a bad performance or 10 overs 60 is a bad performance or 10 overs 100 is a bad performance, that’s what we are still trying to find out,” he said. Dhoni explained why he did not use Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India’s most economical bowler, for his full quota of overs in the sixth and penultimate game onWednesday. London: Jose Mourinho believes the credit for Chelsea`s transformation this season should go to the club`s players and not the manager. Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel this week claimed the squad was developing a winning mentality this season following Mourinho`s return to the club for a second period in charge. The midweek League Cup victory at Arsenal was Chelsea`s sixth successive victory and came on the back of last Sunday`s 2-1 triumph over Manchester City that maintained Mourinho`s side`s position two points off the head of the Premier League table and strengthened their title claims.Last season, the club became focused more on securing a top four finish rather than winning the championship but Mourinho insists the improvements have come from within the squad.“I was not here to feel it last season,” said the Portuguese. “I just think that you can only do things

when the players are open for that.“You can try and try but if the players are not open to your ideas, you fight and fight but at the end of the day you can`t do it.“If we are living a positive moment, I think it`s up to them. I do my best to try to help but the players are working in a fantastic way.”The return to form of striker Fernando Torres has been one of the features of Chelsea`s recent run.The Spain forward capped a man of the match display against Manchester City last weekend with the winning goal, his first in the Premier League this season, after impressing in the Champions League against Schalke. But Mourinho said: “I did nothing. I do what I always do, trying to get the best out of my players in a very normal way.“Fernando is responsible for his self-motivation and self-commitment and the way he is working every day. I don`t think Fernando is a kid that will be influenced by these wins. I want him to be stable and not be too worried about proving himself or

Clarke reprimanded over dissent charge Sydney: Australia Test captain Michael Clarke has been reprimanded for showing dissent while playing for New South Wales in a domestic match, Cricket Australia said on Friday. Clarke was reported by the umpires on Thursday for challenging an umpire`s decision while captaining NSW in a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania in Sydney.CA said an undisclosed batsman was given the benefit of the doubt when a close-to-the-ground catch was claimed at gully and when the umpire gave a “not out” decision Clarke used the “T sign” or player decision review signal suggesting the decision should be reviewed by the third umpire. Sheffield Shield matches are not televised and therefore a third umpire is not used.As part of the code of behaviour revisions, if any player uses the “T sign”, even in jest, it will lead to an automatic report as it shows dissent at the umpire decision, CA said.Clarke admitted guilt and accepted Match Referee Daryl Harper`s proposed penalty of a reprimand. It was Clarke`s first offence in the past 18 months. Clarke is expected to lead Australia in the first of five Ashes Test matches against England, getting under way in Brisbane on November 21.

Sachin says, aila! He knows everything about me In a country of millions of Sachin fans, Sudhir Kumar perhaps stands out as one of the outstanding fans for attending all his domestic matches with Indian colours painted in his body with Tendulkar’s name marked on it and Indian flag held high. Now , meet Ajit Singh from Dabla village in Sikar district, who not only remembers all the records of Sachin in all Test matches and ODIs but details of each of the matches, venues, time, opponent. Ajit had come all the way from his village to see not just Sachin’s final Ranji Trophy match in Lahli, Haryana but would wait for him at the Canal Rest House in Rohtak, where Sachin stayed for a week. His wish was to meet his idol once. So he waited for him for six days. His dream was fulfilled on the sixth day as he finally got the chance to meet him. Sachin Tendulkar tested his talent and asked him 5 questions. And he correctly answered all of them. Sachin gifted him an autographed T-shirt. All my life, I had worshipped him and suddenly I was there standing before my God. I got very nervous and when he asked me a few questions I managed to stay calm and answered all of them correctly. He was happy and immediately gave me an autographed T-shirt. That indeed was the best moment of my life. God also promised me that he will give me a ticket for his last Test match in Wankhede. I am so happy. For me this is a ticket to Salvation.’’

scoring or not scoring. Just work for the team.” Mourinho, meanwhile, believes Bertrand Traore can make an early impact at the club after signing a four-and-a-half year deal this week. The Burkina Faso midfielder - who was previously with Association Jeunes Espoirs De Bobo-Dioulasso was prevented from joining the club on a permanent basis until his 18th birthday but featured on their pre-season tour to Asia. And Mourinho said: “I wanted to take him in pre-season to have a look at him for 2 or 3 weeks in front of important crowds like the 60 or 70,000 we had in Asia.“We have a kid that in our opinion is one of the best talents of his age. He was doing that in pre-season against nice opposition but he was making an impact. He has been playing in his national team since 16 and African national teams are good sides, especially Burkina Faso as they have some talented players.

Return Ashes: Will the real Mitchell Johnson please stand up? Sydney: Desperate times call for desperate measures, and faced with the prospect of a fourth straight Ashes defeat it looks like Australia will once again roll the dice on Mitchell Johnson. The news that Johnson, ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2009, had been recalled from India to get some red ball practice ahead of this month`s first Ashes test will undoubtedly have been met with broad smiles, not to say guffaws, from England fans. Whether that schadenfreude is pricked in Brisbane depends very much on which Mitchell Johnson turns up at the Gabba on November 21. If it is the man with the golden left arm, who gets such pace and swing on the ball that he becomes almost unplayable, England`s travelling support could spend five days in the Queensland sunshine wiping metaphorical egg off their faces. If, however, it is the misfiring bowler whose contribution is more evident in the extras than the wickets column, Brisbane can look forward to the Barmy Army`s full repertoire of songs lam-

pooning him. There are few cricketers more enigmatic than the quietly spoken and introspective Queenslander, who turns 32 on Saturday and has taken 205 wickets in 51 test at an average of 31.

Fit-again Zaheer Khan overlooked, Rohit Sharma named in Test squad for Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series Zaheer Khan may have lost oodles of weight and regained his form, but the selectors have instead picked Mohammad Shami for the two-Test series against West Indies starting on November 6. The rubber, which will be Sachin Tendulkar’s last, could well be Rohit Sharma’s first after the classy right-hander found a place in the 15-man squad on the back of some consistent performances in ODIs. Zaheer, who generated decent pace and bowled 30 overs for his five wickets for Mumbai against Haryana earlier this week, last played for the country in December 2012. The selectors also ignored his performances in the recent ‘A’ series against the West Indians in Hubli and Shimoga. Shami, who has done his bit in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, is one of four pacers in the squad. The others are Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and — believe it or not — Ishant Sharma. Ashok Dinda, who was part of the squad in the Australia series earlier this year, has been dropped. The spin department comprises R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra. Ravindra Jadeja, who did well during the 4-0 win over Australia, has been advised rest by the team’s physiotherapist. Harbhajan Singh may have picked up nine wickets in Punjab’s Ranji opener against Odisha but he, too, was

ignored. The good news is that the discards (including Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir) will get at least two more Ranji games (November 7-10 and November 14-17) to make their case before India travel to South Africa in December. Shikhar Dhawan will open the batting with M Vijay. Cheteshwar Pujara, Tendulkar and Virat Kohli will occupy the next three sports. Sharma, who has eased into the opener’s role in ODIs, was preferred over Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. He is certain to make his Test debut in Kolkata (November 6-10).

Squad: MS Dhoni (C & WK), M Vijay, S Dhawan, C Pujara, S Tendulkar, V Kohli, R Sharma, A Rahane, R Ashwin, P Ojha, A Mishra, I Sharma, B Kumar, M Shami, U Yadav

Sri Lanka picks strong squad against Kiwis Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) selectors today picked a strong 16-member squad for the limited overs series against New Zealand, starting November 10. This is despite the tourists having one of the most depleted squads ever to tour the island since 1984. New Zealand have rested both Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor for the tour and the captain picked in place of McCullum, Kane Williamson was forced out due to an injury. Pacer Kyle Mills will be captaining the Kiwis squad. The only new face in the Sri Laka squad is 24-year-old allrounder Ashan Priyanjana, while left-handed opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne has been recalled after two years. The two sides will play three ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals from November 10-21.

Virat Kohli: World’s most destructive ODI batsman NEW DELHI: The rise of Virat Kohli is a fascinating tale. From a precocious talent, who climbed through the ranks to become part of Team India in 2008, the Delhi boy has become the most devastating batsman in ODI cricket at the moment. And he is developing into a formidable Test batsman too. However, it’s in one-dayers that Kohli has expressed himself in the most telling manner: 17 centuries, an average of over 52 and strike-rate of over 88 - a proven match-winner in all conditions. The confidence and

belief were always part of his character even in his under-19 days. But he has now added maturity to his game, raising it to a very high level which has been in evidence in the ongoing ODI series against Australia.Experts generally feel that his immense self-confidence has flowed into his batting seamlessly. “Kohli has gone from strength to strength after an impressive campaign in the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa. It’s his selfconfidence which puts the bowlers immediately on the back foot. And

when you have great technique to back that confidence, runs will naturally flow,” former chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanthtold TOI on Thursday. The former India opener opined that the 2009 Champions Trophy was the turning point in Kohli’s career. “Virat had gone to South Africa as a replacement of Yuvraj Singh and scored an impressive 79 not out against West Indies. He quickly adapted to the format and matured quickly. In the meantime, he also made his Test debut and the success that he had in the

series Down Under increased his confidence even more,” Srikkanth added.Kohli’s former Delhi coach Manoj Prabhakar concurs with Srikkanth. “Virat is one batsman who is always ready to take on the short ball. When a batsman is not scared of the bouncer, his feet movement becomes more fluid and the timing comes as a result,” Prabhakar said.Kohli came close to scoring 1,000 ODI runs (995) in 2010 but hasn’t missed that landmark in the next three years - 1,381 in 2011, 1,026 in 2012 and 1,033 in 2013 till

date.Over the course of these three years, he has also amassed 13 centuries and on Wednesday became the quickest to amass 17 tons, in 58 fewer innings than Sourav Ganguly. At 24, the world is there to be won for Kohli. “The manner in which Virat is batting, the record of (Sachin Tendulkar’s) 49 hundreds looks possible. Virat needs 32 more and with the number of ODIs Indians play he can do it.This cricketing season itself, Virat can get to 20 or 22 hundreds,” former India captain Sunil Gavaskar told a news channel.
