Defence minister A.K. Antony on Friday denied reports that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had occupied 640 sq. km of Indian territory in Ladakh and asserted that there was no question of ceding any part of the country and all steps were being taken to safeguard national security. “I would like to assure the house that there is no question of India ceding to China any part of Indian territory,” the minister said in a statement to the Lok Sabha. “The government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all necessary measures to safe-
guard it. I would further like to assure the house that government would continue to strengthen our capabilities in border areas to protect our national interest.” Antony’s comments came after members of opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party, demanded an explanation from the government, following a newspaper report of the alleged occupation. According to a report in the Hindustan Times earlier this week, the PLA has occupied 640 sq. km in Depsang area of Ladakh, where India
detected an intrusion in April, leading to a threeweek-long stand-off between the neighbours. The stand-off threatened to derail a visit in May by China’s newly installed leader Li Keqiang but the Indian government said the confrontation was resolved and the visit took place. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is planning a return visit to China later this year. The newspaper report said Indian troops did not have access to this 640 sq. km area of Depsang. It was based on an assessment that was reportedly made by the National Security Advisory

Family of Manan contradicts UP police claims
We are in touch with UP police: IGP Srinagar, September 06: The family of Abdul Manan Wani, an engineering student who was mysterious found dead in Ghaziabad UP a few days back, Friday contradicted the police claims that he had committed suicide. Talking to KNS, Prof Sharif Wani uncle of the deceased said, “There are some missing links in police claims. His body was not hanging from the ceiling fan but tied to exhaust vent opening above the door (roshan daan) with a bed sheet and not by a rope, as was claimed by the police and
reported by a section of media.” “The door of his room was not locked, it was wide open. All this leads to think that this mysterious death is not a natural death at all but a cold blooded murder,” he said. Manan was pursuing Engineering course at SRM College Ghaziabad and was living in a private building. Prof Wani said that Mannan had left his home town Srinagar on the August 10 to continue with his degree classes in Ghaziabad and was found dead on September 4. “That means he had See IGP on Pg. 11

provide adequate security measures for the concert,” Inspector General of Police A G Mir said. Only guests with special passes will be able to enter the area, after being frisked and scanned by metal detectors. “There are almost 1,700-2,000 guests including ambassadors of European countries, central ministers, bureaucrats Industrialists, sports and Bollywood stars, who have arrived in the city for the concert. It is the biggest security exercise for us in Kashmir after a long time,” said another senior police official who declined to be named. But a large number of civil society members and separatist leaders believe the concert revolves around manipulating perceptions to give false impressions. A group of civil society has even decided to conduct a parallel concert (Reality of Kashmir) on the same day. “Germany must accept the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir and recognise the pain and legitimate political and legal struggle of its people,” the group said. Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani sees the event as an attempt to give legitimacy to “Indian rule” in Kashmir. The octogenarian has called for peaceful protests on Friday and a shutdown against it on Saturday. All the special invitees in the state, which include ministers and officials of the state government have been asked to report at the University of Kashmir lawns, three hours ahead of the event, from where they will be driven in secure vehicles to the venue by the police. The 90 minute concert by Bavarian State Orchestra will be broadcast live by television channels in India and fifty European countries. The show will begin with a Kashmiri composition by Kashmiri composer Pt Bajan Sopori and his son, Abhay Rustum Sopori, who have worked on the piece with local Kashmiri artistes.

Additional General Secretary NC Dr Mustafa Kamal told KNS that both Prime Ministers should take positive steps towards the Kashmir dispute. “There was a time when violence was in Kashmir and government of India was emphasizing that once the violence comes to end the issue of Kashmir will be resolved. Now when violence has gone over they should resolve Kashmir issue.” About the importance of dialogue he said, “The process suffered many setbacks despite many hiccups, it has been able to move forward. But now both the countries had realized that the policy of confrontation was not in the interest of their people and there was no other option except dialogue and reconciliation,” he said. Meanwhile urging both Prime Ministers to make dialogue result oriented PDP said that it is imperative for both countries to resolve Kashmir issue. “I think there is an urgent need for the dialogue as tension has aggravated between two countries across LOC. so we expect that the talks between two Prime Ministers at this point of time will help to ease out the tension and peace process should resume,” PDP Chief Spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar told KNS. “Both countries should take Separatist leaders in confidence so that a permanent and long lasting solution could be found which is in the interest of both countries and both the countries should go ahead with the CBM’s that have already been suggested but not implemented properly,” he added.

While briefing the world media about the ground realities he added that people of Kashmir with their sincere heart have always greeted tourists and visiting personalities and said that “we don’t keep any sort of grudge against any nor we have any enmity with a particular person.” In his comments over the Zubin Mehta’s musical concert, Geelani said that it was more politically motivated than a cultural show and added that India under this garb intends to convey the distorted picture as per its agenda. In his interaction with foreign media he briefed them about the grim situation
prevailing in valley and said that “our nation is in a state of mourning and Delhi has turned down our demand for mortal remains of Mohammad Afzal Guroo.” While expressing his dismay said that when entire nation is protesting against the forced disappearance of more than ten thousand youth and the innocents killed in Markundal and Gool incidents the “Indian authorities in collaboration with Germany are presenting the interpretation of the situation as per their ploy and portray the situation otherwise and as if there is no problem.” Speaking to Daily New York Times, Geelani said that although European Union supports “our cause for right to self-determination, however contrary to this German government does not understand its responsibility.”

It is situated in the upper reaches of Himalayan Range about 10 kms from Khag, Budgam. You may feel like someone’s trying to pin you down before you start, Leo. Perhaps these obstacles are self-imposed. Maybe you’re restricting yourself from doing the things you want to do because you’re afraid they won’t work out. This fear of failure is the pain you feel. Overcoming it is the first step. If you try and fail, you’ll be no worse off than if you never try at all.
Virgo August 23-September 22
Things should be running smoothly for you, Virgo, and you’ll accomplish a lot with surprisingly little effort. Although there may not be any Earth-shattering developments, you should find that things go well. Maybe you won’t win the lottery today, but the few dollars you invest now will turn into megabucks later. Be patient. Success may not come overnight, but it will come.
Libra
September 23-October 23 You may feel like you’re being tested in some way, Libra, like you’re on trial and must defend yourself, including what you believe and how you operate. This feeling is unsettling, but soon you’ll realize that it’s strengthening in many ways. Questioning your behavior patterns is healthy, so open up in a way that you may not have considered before.
Scorpio
October 24-November 21 Your vitality is low. It may be difficult to fight adversity, Scorpio. Try not to get discouraged. Instead, realize that this is part of the natural cycle. Awareness of your energy patterns is half the battle. Don’t force yourself into feeling something you don’t. It’s important that you not overexert yourself or take on more responsibilities than you can handle.
Sagittarius November 22-December 21
You may find it hard to admit that you can’t do everything, Sagittarius. There are some jobs that you aren’t cut out to do. Why pretend when a better option would be to delegate the task to someone else? If you don’t feel a strong connection with something or someone, don’t force it. Pretending that you’re capable of something will only cause frustration for you and everyone else.
Capricorn December 22-January 19
Your hard work is paying off in ways that may not be noticeable to you now, Capricorn. Things are flowing naturally, and you seem to have all your responsibilities under control. You may not be aware that this is so since it’s easier to see when something’s wrong than when something’s going well. Take time to appreciate the incredible things you’ve created for yourself thanks to all your effort.
Aquarius January 20-February 18
You may feel like it’s your responsibility to take care of everyone, Aquarius. If you love someone, your brain translates this into thinking that you need to be the caretaker. If you don’t take someone under your wing, maybe you see yourself as selfish or unkind. Dismiss this notion. Other people’s feelings aren’t your responsibility. Don’t let another’s well-being become your project.
Pisces
February 19-March 20 There are opportunities for achievement, so stay open to new energy coming your way, Pisces. If you don’t turn at these fortuitous junctions, you may never find this spot in the road again. What comes your way may not be a pot of gold, but it will certainly be the rainbow that leads you to it. If nothing else, you’ll find opportunities that strengthen your spirit, preparing you for adversity later.

Stop prodigality and extravagance in marriage ceremonies
M
arriage season is at its peak in the valley with dozens of ceremonies being solemnized everyday. Marriage is a social and a religious duty for every person as this is the basis for the whole social and human mechanism which helps this world to carry on from generation to generation. However, what is worrying everybody is the huge expenditure incurred on these marriages which gives birth to social evils and with the result the whole society has to face the brunt of useless competition, in which irrespective of the economic standing every family has to suffer in one way or the other. On every marriage numerous dishes are prepared and offered to the huge number of guests who are invited and most of these dishes are wasted as the guests cannot take so heavy a lunch or a dinner. Though guest control law is existent in the state but nobody is interested to enforce it or nobody is interested and bothered to go according to this law. The law enforcing agencies have also never taken much interest in the implementation of this law as they are engaged in other problems to be tackled on priority. The wazwan Kashmiri name for the cuisine served on marriage ceremonies has become so costly that if the money spent on it is invested on the welfare of the newly wedded, it will definitely prove very productive for them in the settlement of their certain economic requirements. In addition to wazwan a lot of money is being spent on the purchase of ornaments and clothes besides the exchange of gifts between the two families who enter in the marital relations of their wards. There are occasions when the marriages or the engagements are broken only because of the bride’s family is not in a position to send heavy duty gifts to the grooms’ family. The dowry has sofar claimed hundreds of lives in our country and it is because of this that a law banning dowry was made by the parliament some years back. Even Islam is quit against the social evils like extravagance and prodigality and it strictly prohibits the same because these ultimately lead to unethical acts. It is perhaps in the best interests of the society and the concerned families that they refrain from spending huge amounts on marriage ceremonies. It also imperative for the civil society to impress upon the people and organize awareness campaign to help the society in getting rid of these social evils.

BUDHAL THE HILL STATION OF RAJOURI
K.D Maini
Sardar Ibrahim Khan in a Primary School at Trarkhal, a village of Poonch District On 13th of November, the Pak radiers along with the deserters of Maharaja's forces under the command of Captain Rehmat Ullah and Sakhi Dilaer Suddan captured Rajouri after committing large scale atrocities at Rajouri. They also went towards Budhal and captured the town. The Pak radiers nominated Mirza Mohammad Hussain as the Administrator of Rajouri area which included Budhal also. Mirza Mohammad Hussain further nominated Sardar Jalal Din as Administrator of Budhal. This setup continued during the winter of 1947 and upto the beginning of summer of 1948. Lieutenant Col. Bhagwan Singh wrote in one of his article "50 YEARS OF LIBERATION OF BUDHAL" that in the month of November, 1947, the recaptur-

Lieutenant Colonel Bhagwan Singh was given the task to liberate Budhal by Major General Atma Singh who was In-charge of the operation. In these circumstances, Lieutenant Colonel Bhagwan Singh alongwith Brigade Major Isher Dass and contingent left Jammu via Reasi to capture Budhal. They crossed the river Chenab at Reasi by ropes and reached near Ans Nallah where two companies of 3rd JAK Rifle were stationed. After making quick appreciation of the situation, Lieutenant Colonel Bhagwan Singh decided frontal attack on Budhal and took enemy by surprise. As per 1981 Census, the total population of the tehsil was 55720 souls. Out of which 44634 were Muslims, 10905 were Hindus and 134 were Sikhs apart from 1947 Budhist. Literacy rate was 12.17%. Only 28.40% working force was available while the marginal farmers were 16.35%. All the villages were having educational facilities. 12 villages were having health facilities. All the villages were having potable drinking water facilities. 14 villages were connected with roads and 18 villages were having power supply. Presently, 65% population of the tehsil is living below poverty line. Due to locational disadvantages, very less development has taken place in the past. Serious efforts are being made for the development of the area by creating infrastructural facilities like road linkages, construction of school buildings, health institutions, provision of drinking water facilities, electrification of villages etc. Under Beneficiary Oriented Schemes, people are getting full benefit of plan funds while under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), old-age pension is being provided to 2500 persons. 725 trainees have so far been trained under various trades enabling them to start their ventures. No doubt that due to militancy related activities, the tehsil has suffered a lot and the officers are not in a position to monitor the schemes in remote areas Even then, full efforts are being made to help the people, to create infrastructure, to implement various nature of Beneficiary Oriented Schemes and to redress their grievances by solving their problems. Budhal has good potential from tourist point of view. Its scenic beauty can attract tourists rom the State as well as from outside the state. Moreover, this track can be used for adventure tourism also. Therefore, there is need of development of this area for tourism purposes so that the poverty among masses in Budhal tehsil could be removed. (Concluded)
ASHA the New Hope of health Care Delivery in Rural India
wareness about health care programmes and facilities is the essence for the success of any health care initiative which is closely linked with human development. The Government launched the National Rural Health Mission in 2005 to provide accessible, affordable and quality health care to rural population. One of the key components of the Mission is to provide every village with a trained female community health activist called ASHA or Accredited Social Health Activist. ASHA is selected from the village itself and is accountable to it. ASHA acts as a bridge between the ANM and the village. She is accountable to the Panchayat. She is an honorary volunteer, receiving performance-based compensation for promoting universal immunization, referral and escort services for RCH, construction of household toilets and other healthcare delivery programmes. She facilitates preparation and implementation of the Village Health Plan along with Anganwadi worker, ANM, functionaries of other Departments and Self Help Group members. ASHA works as an interface between community and the public health system. ASHA is the first port of any health related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children who find it difficult to access health services in rural areas. ASHA programme is expanding across states and has been successful in bringing people back to public health system, increasing the utilisation of outpatient services, diagnostics facilities, institutional deliveries and in-patient care. ASHAs are central feature of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) community based health care delivery. They are widely accepted as the most visible face and one of the most successful components of NRHM. Till date
more than 8.85 lakh ASHA workers have been selected, trained and deployed across the country. ASHAs perform the role of facilitation, activism and community level care. Their work includes counselling on improved health practices and prevention of illness and complications and appropriate curative care or referrals for pregnant woman, newborn, ill children as also for malaria, tuberculosis and other conditions. Other than this, ASHAs have also been engaged in the social marketing of products such as sanitary napkins and

Incentive package for ASHAs has been increased and payments are being streamlined. ASHA facilitators are an integral part of the ASHA programme and are to be deployed before the selection of ASHA. An intensive induction training programme of 23 days in 5 episodes is given to the ASHA worker. After a period of six months of her functioning in the village she is sensitised on HIV/AIDS

spacing contraceptives. To enable ASHAs to perform these roles, most states have established the institutional structures required for training and support. What more needs to be done is strengthening these structures to perform effectively. issues including Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Reproductive Tract Infections, prevention and referrals. She is also trained in new-born care. The Central Government bears the cost of training, incentives and medical kits. The remaining is funded through central assistance given to state governments under this programme. Over 7.99 lakh ASHAs have been provided drug kits so far. These kits
contain Generic AYUSH and allopathic formulations for common ailments which are replenished from time to time. Most states are also in the process of distributing an equipment kit to ASHAs for providing home-based new-born care. An evaluation study commissioned by the Planning Commission has revealed that more than 65 percent beneficiaries are visited by ASHA once in 15-30 days. 80 percent beneficiaries have confirmed delivery of free drugs by ASHA. 65 percent beneficiaries have opted for institutional delivery and 60 percent of women availed antenatal care services in government facility proving the significant role of ASHA in motivating pregnant woman for utilisation of antenatal care from public health care facilities. 56 percent of couples reported use of contraception of which 88 percent availed from government health counters. ASHA has also played an important role in educating patients from the households visited by them to go for treatment of chronic diseases in public health institutions instead of private health facilities. Evaluation study has also pointed out the need to improve payment of compensation to ASHAs and also to provide advance money for emergency transport. The new initiatives are:Establishing an ASHA database in all states; Introducing a system for outcome monitoring; Introducing handbook for ASHA facilitators; and Setting up ASHA grievance redressal mechanism. In a separate evaluation study in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand it has been pointed out that there is a great urgency to speed up establishment of support structures and implementation of the programme. All these states will benefit a great deal while having a skilled ASHA at the community level to promote maternal, new-born and child health and family planning.

Don't discount doctor's gut feeling'
Don't discount a doctor's gut feeling when it comes to serious illness, especially those affecting children, a new study suggests. A clinician's intuitive feeling that something is wrong, even after examination that suggests otherwise, seems to have even greater diagnostic value than most symptoms and signs. Serious infection can easily be missed in young children and making a diagnosis has been described as "like finding a needle in a haystack." Studies have suggested it should be seen as highly important in its own right but there is lack of understanding about whether it can be seen as useful, British Medical Journal reported. The gut feeling hinges on a doctors 'sense of reassurance or alarm,' bearing on their degree of certainty about the prognosis (future outcome) of the disease. Alarm implies that he perceives an uneasy feeling about a possible adverse outcome, according to an Antwerp statement. The team of researchers which also included Paul Van Royen, University of Antwerp, Belgium, therefore carried out an observational study on 3,890 children aged between 0 and 16 years who reported for primary care in Flanders, Belgium in 2004. Out of the 3,369 children assessed as having a nonsevere illness at the time of consultation, six were later hospitalised with a serious infection. Results show that acting on gut feeling had the potential to prevent two of the six cases being missed at the cost of 44 false alarms, but that these were not "unmanageable." In fact, 21 out of the 3,890 children were eventually admitted to hospital with a serious infection and nine were not referred at first contact. However, in four of the nine children, the doctor had a gut feeling that something serious was wrong. The feature most strongly associated with gut feeling was a history of convulsions and the child's overall appearance and breathing. The authors also found that gut feeling is strongly influenced by parental concern that the illness is different. Finally, less experienced clinicians reported it more frequently than their more senior counterparts. However, the diagnostic power of gut feeling was no better in experienced than non-experienced clinicians.

Snoring ups BP risk in pregnant women
Women who begin snoring during pregnancy are at greater risk of developing high blood pressure and preeclampsia, a new research from the University of Michigan has revealed. The research showed pregnancy-onset snoring was strongly linked to gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, said lead author Louise O'Brien, Ph.D., associate professor in U-M's Sleep Disorders Center. "We found that frequent snoring was playing a role in high blood pressure problems, even after we had accounted for other known risk factors. And we already know that high blood pressure in pregnancy, particularly preeclampsia, is associated with smaller babies, higher risks of pre-term birth or babies ending up in the ICU," said O'Brien. The study is believed to be the largest of its kind, with more than 1,700 participants. It is the first study to demonstrate that pregnan-
cy-onset snoring confers significant risk to maternal cardiovascular health. Habitual snoring, the hallmark symptom of sleepdisordered breathing, was defined as snoring three to four nights a week. About 25 per cent of women started snoring frequently during pregnancy and this doubled the risk for high
ally sound vegan diet is variety. For a healthy and varied vegan diet, opt for fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes. High-fat foods such as oils, margarine, nuts, nut butters, seed butters, avocado, and coconut should be eaten sparingly. Pros and cons Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts have protective
breathing using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). It involves a machine, worn during sleep, which uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open. It is possible that use of CPAP may decrease high blood pressure in pregnant women, and O'Brien has such a study currently underway to test this hypoth-
The study found that blood pressure of obese kids is 40 per cent higher than that of healthy youngsters and they have up to nine times more cholesterol in their blood, the Daily Mail reported. Oxford academics warned that even in children as young as five, their arteries have become lined with fatty deposits so their hearts have to work harder to pump blood. The study that involved nearly 50,000 five to 15year-olds found the hearts of obese children were enlarged compared with those of youngsters who were a healthy weight. And the blood pressure and cholesterol of some was already so high that unless they change their lifestyles, they could be 40 per cent more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke in adulthood. "It's almost like a ticking time bomb of damage going on in their hearts and blood
vessels," the paper quoted Dr Matthew Thompson, one of the study's authors, as saying. Although researchers have long known that obese children tend to have slightly higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels, they were shocked at the differences compared with those of normal weight -particularly in obese girls, who had far higher blood pressure than healthy youngsters. The researchers also found cholesterol levels, measuring fatty deposits in the arteries, were between 7.5 and nine times higher than normal. "The relationship between obesity in children and cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure was much greater than we anticipated," said Researcher Dr Carl Heneghan, reader in evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford.
Improve posture for a flat tummy With a success rate of nearly 40 per cent, invitro fertilisation (IVF) has been steadily gaining popularity among rural couples suffering from infertility, an expert said here Wednesday. "On an average, one out of every 14 couples suffers from infertility in the country. With a success rate of nearly 40 percent, IVF has been a boon for infertile couples and the treatment has been steadily gaining popularity among the rural population," said gynecologist and IVF expert Gautam Khastgir. Khastgir associated withthe city-based Bengal Infertility and Reproductive Ther-
apy Hospital (BIRTH) said that of all his patients nearly 60 percent came from rural areas of the state. "With drastic life style changes, pollution and lack of hygiene, infertility has been on the rise in rural areas. However, the good thing is people are now becoming more
aware and conscious and are opting for IVF to get rid of infertility. Rural population across the country suffering from infertility is now opting for IVF," said Khastgir. On the urban front also infertility has also been on the rise with obesity, strenuous life and drinking and smoking being the
All of us wish for a washboard tummy but the very thought of all those sit-ups and stomach crunches put us off, right? Well, there are other means of reducing your paunch, or rather, of stopping it from getting bigger, without even stepping into the gym. Check them out: Improve your posture If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, in front of a screen, chances are that you slouch, thus leaving the stomach loose and bulging. The first step towards a taut tummy is to never slouch, whether sitting, standing or walking. Says Merin, physiotherapist, Biorhythm fitness centre,"Weak back muscles affect the abs as well. Something you can do while at your desk is to maintain a straight back, yet comfortable position. A chin up, shoulders back, stomach in posture while walking not only makes you look fitter but makes your tummy look flatter." Do stretch exercises at work While at your workseat, stretch your back and pull in the stomach. Hold your breath and release. Sway from side to side a few times. Rest your arms on the armrest of the chair and lift
your feet, one at a time. Hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat every half hour or as often as you can. There are also forced breathing techniques for the stomach which you can learn from a professional. Walk to work "A common misconception is that stomach crunches are the only way to a flat stomach. Stomach fat is just one part of general body fat; only it shows more," points out Merin. She recommends walking or cycling instead of driving if your workplace is near, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator wherever possible.
Why eat three bananas a day British and Italian researchers have found that eating three bananas cuts the risk of a stroke. They said that having one banana for breakfast, one for lunch and one in the evening would provide enough potassium to reduce the chances of suffering a blood clot on the brain by around 21 per cent. The findings suggest that
thousands of strokes could be prevented by the consumption of other potassium-rich foods such as spinach, nuts, milk, fish and lentils, reports the Daily Mail. Although some previous studies have suggested bananas could be important for controlling blood pressure and preventing strokes, results have not always been on-
Veganism, ahead of vegetarianism
Imagine surviving on a diet that excludes chicken, cheese, milk and all your favourite food. Most of us would yell out 'no-way'. But going vegan is the new fad among the ordinary as well as the admired. Let's find out more... For some, it's the latest key to staying fit and toned and for the rest it's the new eco-friendly and animal-protection mantra. With vegan diet receiving a lot of response, veganism has moved on to being something more than just a diet. It is a lifestyle that you choose to live. The old idea that only long-haired hippies nibble carrots and lettuce in their mountain homes no longer applies. Veganism — a step ahead of vegetarianism Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition, do not consume any products that are derived from animals — eggs, dairy products, honey etc. Moreover, many vegans do not use leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products. Be a healthy vegan The key to a nutrition-
blood pressure compared to non-snoring women. O'Brien writes that these results suggest that up to 19 per cent of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy might be mitigated through treatment of any underlying sleep-disordered breathing. Pregnant women can be treated for sleep-disordered
Even 5 year olds suffer heart damage
characteristics against major chronic diseases. At the same time, lower intake of calcium and vitamin D can lead to a higher risk of bone fractures in vegans. Eliminating dairy from the diet removes a good source of calcium. Hence, consume calcium-fortified foods. Also, iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies are a major concern among vegans. While a plantbased diet lowers the risk of age-related problems,
unwise selection of food can lead to adverse health outcomes. When eating out... Go for pizza without cheese, Chinese moo shu vegetables, Indian curries and dal, eggplant dishes without cheese, bean tacos without lard and cheese, Middle Eastern hummus and tabouli, Ethiopian injera (flat bread) and lentil stew and Thai vegetable cur-
sistent. In the latest research, scientists analysed data from eleven different studies - dating back to the mid-Sixties - and pooled the results to get an overall outcome. They found a daily potassium intake of around 1,600 mg, less than half the UK recommended daily amount for an adult of 3,500mg, were enough to lower
stroke risk by more than a fifth. The average banana contains around 500 milligrams of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure and controls the balance of fluids in the body. Too little potassium can lead to an irregular heartbeat, irritability, nausea and diarrhoea. Researchers from the University
of Warwick and the University of Naples said, "Potassium intake in most countries is well below the recommended daily amount." But if consumers ate more potassium-rich foods and also reduced their salt intake, the annual global death toll from strokes could be cut by more than a million a year.
Five steps to stronger bones
1. Eat properly Getting 1,000mg of calcium a day is the first step — and you're much better off doing this through diet if you can. The best food sources are low-fat dairy such as semiskimmed milk and yoghurt, as well as bony fish, such as tinned salmon and sardines. Leafy green veg such as kale, broccoli and spinach are also rich in calcium. Dried fruits such as figs and currants and breakfast cereals fortified with calcium are also good sources. 2. Get more vitamin d Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Although some is found in oily fish, our main source comes from the effect of sunlight on your skin. It's estimated that half of us have a deficiency because we don't get outside enough or because we always use sunblock. As part of its Sunlight Campaign, the National Osteoporosis Society is advising people to catch some rays between May and September to keep their vitamin D levels topped up. Just 10 minutes of sunlight a day on bare arms and your face can cut your risk of
bone fractures by a third. 3. The right moves Another vital way to boost your bones is weight-bearing exercise —basically anything that has you upright and stretching your muscles. Good choices include aerobics, dancing or brisk walking. "Research shows that if you don't exercise you end up weeing out all the calcium you take in instead of storing it in your bones," warns
Prof Skelton. "Ideally we should aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. "Put simply, the more hours we spend on our feet, the fewer bone breakages we should have in later life." 4. Quit the cigs and booze People who smoke have significantly lower bone density, while drinking more than seven alcoholic drinks a week can prevent your bones from
absorbing the maximum nutrients from your food. 5. Watch your stress levels "High levels of stress make the body produce the hormone cortisol, which causes bone loss," says Prof Skelton. "Over a long period this can increase your risk of osteoporosis. Yoga, walking the dog or listening to music can all help bust stress.

Be careful while publicising schemes, President tells govt
Acting on Delhi Lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin’s recommendations, President Pranab Mukherjee has directed the Delhi government’s Department of Welfare for SC/ST/ OBC and Minority Community “to be careful” in publicising their policies. The advisory comes after Justice Sarin in May this year recommended to the President that an advisory be issued to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan asking them to desist from putting their photographs on application forms offering loan at low rates under the ‘Dilli Swarojgar Yojna’.
Mukherjee also asked the Delhi government to frame guidelines to govern such advertisements. On receiving the recommendation from Justice Sarin, the President had referred the issue to the Home Ministry to take appropriate action.
In a letter to the Delhi Lokayukta, the Home Ministry conveyed Mukherjee’s directions. The Home Ministry wrote “it was found that Department of Welfare of SC/ST/OBC/minority and Delhi SC/ST/OBC/ Minority Finance and Development Corporation need not print photographs of the CM and the minister on loan application forms as the practise does not benefit the prospective loanee in any manner”. In May, after receiving a complaint from BJP MLA Harsh Vardhan, Justice Sarin had recommended that Dikshit and Chauhan ‘desist’ from publishing their photographs on the application forms, block or efface
DA case: Jagan’s remand extended till Sept. 20
A special CBI court in Hyderabad on Friday extended till September 20 the judicial remand of jailed YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and other accused in connection with a case relating to alleged quid-pro-quo investments in the companies owned by the Kadapa MP. Mr. Jagan, along with other accused including his auditor V. Vijay Sai Reddy, former minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao, industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad and bureaucrat K.V. Brahmananda Reddy, who are lodged in the Chanchalguda Central Prison were produced before the court through video-conference which extended their judicial remand by another 14 days.Mr. Jagan, who was recently shifted back to Chanchal-
guda jail from Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) after his treatment following his indefinite fast against the move to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, was arrested by CBI on May 27 last year on corruption charges and has been lodged there since then. Former AP Ministers Dharmana Prasada Rao and Sabitha Reddy, both accused in the case also appeared before the court. Meanwhile, a group of pro-Telangana lawyers tried to stop the vehicle of Dharmana in the Nampally court premises and raised slogans in support of the statehood demand but police immediately dispersed them. The case relates to alleged investments made by private firms and individual investors in Mr. Jagan’s companies as a quid-pro-quo for government favours when his father, late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. The court, in the meanwhile, also extended the judicial custody of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and other accused in the case pertaining to alleged illegal mining involving his OMC firm, till September 20 after they were produced through video-link from the Chanchalguda jail.Last week, the CBI had questioned AP Minister for Major Industries J Geetha Reddy in connection the case against Jagan about the Lepakshi Knowledge Hub (LKH) land allotment.

their photographs on all existing forms and frame guidelines “for issuance of advertisements, hoardings etc., featuring photographs of public functionaries”.During the course of the hearing, the Lokayukta had observed that the decision to print the photographs on the loan forms were taken by Chauhan and approved by Dikshit. BJP MLA Harsh Vardhan said, “The printing of photographs was intended to get an edge in the forthcoming Assembly elections by forming an image in the minds of the electors.” He said he had also filed a complaint against Dikshit for misleading voters under the pretext of regularising unauthorised colonies by issuing provisional certificates in the runup to the 2008 assembly elections.
India on Friday said it has “adequate” foreign exchange reserves, at present USD 280 billion to defend its currency amid global volatility and ruled out taking any external assistance unless there is a “radical” change in the situation. Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia also said the rupee’s fall this year has clearly overshot limits. “With 280 billion dollars in reserves, I don’t think we will be drawing on currency swap arrangements unless there is a radical change in the situation,” said Ahluwalia, who is the ‘sherpa’ to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the ongoing summit of the Group of 20 industrialised and emerging economies. Jodhpur police receives fresh complaints against Asaram
Jodhpur Police has said it has received fresh complaints against Asaram Bapu even as it dispatched teams to the Ahmedabad ashram of the self-styled godman to collect evidence in the sexual assault case against him. Many victims have started coming forward with their complaints against Asaram, police said without disclosing the nature of the complaint or the identity of the alleged victims. They have also offered to help the police in its investigation.Police, however, denied reports that it is in possession of any CD or video clippings given by Asaram’s aide Shiva. of his activity. We have obtained some evidences out of interrogation of Shiva and are in the process of its verification,” DCP Ajay Pal Lamba said. Police teams have been sent to Asaram’s ashram in Ahmedabad to collect evidence in the case. Mr. Lamba said that the case is under investigation and they are yet to interrogate Shilpi, the warden at the Chhindwara Gurukul where the girl was a student and an important link in this case, as she allegedly sent the girl to Asaram. “She is on our radar and we will arrest her at an appropriate time,” he said adding Asaram’s driver and cook will also be interrogated.Police will also cross examine Shiva and Shilpi and if needed.
Ahluwalia also reiterated that some depreciation of the Indian rupee which had touched historic low of close to Rs 69 last month was justifiable. “But when it was close to Rs 69 there was clear overshooting and the extent of rupee was not all connected with high market volatility,” he said, adding that economists, working on varying assumptions, had estimated the rupee’s value at anything between 59 and 65 rupees against the USD. “Some depreciation was justifiable. But when it was 69 there was clear overshooting that was not desirable,” he said. He said currency markets had “over reacted” against the backdrop of a global volatility in the currencies of emerging economies in the wake of the imminent phasing out of fiscal stimulus by the US.

190 people killed in Bihar flood; RSS too against naming Modi PM nominee before assembly polls Nitish conducts aerial survey
PATNA: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday conducted an aerial survey of 12 inundated districts to take stock of the situation arising out of flood which has claimed 190 lives so far in Bihar. Returning from the survey, the CM told reporters that the state government has readied all arrangements to meet the challenge of heavy rains next week in Nepal and North Bihar forecast by the meteorological department. Accompanied by principal secretary disaster management, Vyasji, the CM took round of 12 flooded districts by air. These were Patna, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Munger, Lakhisarai, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali and Buxar. Kumar said water level of swollen Ganga river was receding. He also said that nearly 60 lakh people were affected by the flood. Kumar said relief was distributed among the marooned on a war footing. Relief camps have been set up in the affected areas and necessary items like foodgrain
were given to the victims. The chief minister said he talked to the collectors of all the districts on the shore of the Ganga and gave them necessary instructions. The Bihar CM said that he himself would review flood relief and rehabilitation work and prepare a report on damage to be sent to the Centre. He said flood relief work was carried out under the disaster
management law in which 75 per cent of the cost was borne by the Centre while state's share was 25 per cent. Meanwhile, a report from the disaster management department said that 190 people have lost their lives in the flood across the state so far. The highest toll of 30 people was reported from Purnea district while the casualty was 26 in Bhojpur and 21 in Munger, it said.
Kerala: Man kicked mercilessly by cop for waving black flag at Chief Minister
Thiruvananthapuram: A policeman in Kerala has been caught on camera brutally assaulting a protester who had waved a black flag at Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in state capital Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. Visuals captured by TV cameras show a protester of the opposition CPI-M repeatedly kicked in his private parts by a sub-inspector as half a dozen policemen held him back. The man was part of a black flag protest on a road that the Chief Minister's convoy was to take. The man, in his late 30s, could be seen collapsing in pain from the savage beating. He was taken to the city medical college. The police also allegedly
lathi-charged the other people protesting against the solar scam, allegedly involving the Chief Minister's office and his close aides.Launching swift damage control, the state government has ordered an inquiry and asked the police to take action against their personnel involved in the beating. Kerala's opposition Left Democratic Front has been demanding the Chief Minister's resignation over the solar scam, an alleged con job by a pair of entrepreneurs including a woman named Saritha Nair. A photograph of Ms Nair sharing the stage with Mr Chandy at a function last year and whispering into his ear have been widely circulated by the protesters.
Now, it appears that even the RSS concurs with Shivraj Singh Chouhan's strategy on not naming Narendra Modi the BJP's prime ministerial candidate before the series of assembly polls this year. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has put a spanner in the Gujarat Chief Minister's march to the top post contender after conveying his concern to the party leadership that naming Modi as a PM nominee would polarise voters in his state. Sources close to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders told us that if Modi's name is announced before the assembly elections, it would give the Congress a chance to concentrate the election campaign around Modi's image. The RSS and some senior BJP functionaries think there are better chances of victory in the assembly polls due in November in Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on local issues and performance of the governments. Projecting Modi as PM candidate before assembly polls could harm the BJP's chances, they feel. This argument has been accepted by the
RSS leadership and announcement has been postponed. After the BJP's Goa session in which Modi was made head of the party's campaign committee, it was L.K. Advani and his camp that put pressure on the party not to announce Modi's name as prime ministerial candidate. In fact, sources say, Advani took back his resignation from party posts only after assurance by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that there would be no announcement on the PM candidate before the Lok Sabha elections due in April 2014. Later in July, according to sources close to the RSS, when Advani, BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Narendra modi and former party chief Nitin Gadkari met Bhagwat separately in Nagpur, it was decided that
Modi's name should be announced by September 9. But many senior leaders and the RSS leadership have now developed second thoughts after looking at the situation in the four states. According to sources, the RSS wants the BJP to fight elections on local issues in Delhi and Rajasthan, misgovernance should be made main election issue where as in Madhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Chief Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Raman Singh should be the star campaigners projecting their governments' work. The RSS want the BJP to concentrate more on issues such as corruption and rising prices rather than depend on personality-based contests. This thinking has put on hold the decision to announce Modi as the PM nominee after the assembly elections. Now, Modi and rank and files of the BJP will have to wait till the assembly polls are over. But when the issue crops up again, the RSS will have a tough time keeping the party together on it.
TMC protests against division of West Bengal for creation of Gorkhaland New Delhi, Sept 6 (ANI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) party members protested against the division of West Bengal amid an ongoing demand for the creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland in the region. TMC supporters blamed the Central Government for playing petty politics over creation of new Gorkhaland state."There are three legislatures in Darjeeling. How can you form a state from only three legislatures? One needs to understand this. Not even single, full session of the lower house of the parliament has taken place. Some people come up and demand a
separate state. We would never allow the division of West Bengal and we would like to alert the federal government that they should take their steps carefully," TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited Bagdogra in Darjeeling, said she wanted peace in the region. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on September 2 forced a complete shutdown over their demand for a separate Gorkhaland state. The GJM had intensified their agitation for the formation of the separate state of Gorkhaland after the approval
by the Congress party on the creation of a new Telangana state. Bimal Gurung, GJM president, said a seven member delegation of the autonomous region committee had gone to Delhi to press their demand for the separate state."Today, a forum comprising of lawmakers and legislatures have left to hold talks with the federal government. We will accordingly take the decision after the completion of the talks," said Gurung. Earlier the Government of West Bengal had asked the GJM to call off the strike failing which they would arrest it leaders. However the regional party
refused to budge from the position. The Gorkhaland movement that began in 1980s had ended with a truce between the then Gorkha leader Subhash Ghising and New Delhi, after he accepted limited autonomy in 1988 with a new Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC).At least 1,200 people died in the first Gorkhaland campaign, but protests ended a few years later after Gorkha leaders accepted limited autonomy. The Darjeeling hills region is geo-politically and strategically important for India as it lies close to the borders of China, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
