Discuss several matters including Keran situation Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday took stock of the preparedness of the country's nuclear arsenal with the top security brass, including Chiefs of the three Services. The command and control structures of the forces handling the arsenal are understood to have come up for discussion at the meeting of the Nuclear Command Authority headed by the Prime Minister. The meeting was attended by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh, Air Chief N A K Browne and Naval Chief D K Joshi, sources said. The sources said it was the usual biannual meeting of the Command. The critical Tri-Service Strategic Forces Command (SFC) was created in 2003 to manage and administer country's nuclear arsenal. At present, it is headed by Lt Genrank officers of the three Services

on a rotational basis but it is learnt that the Army, which controls majority of the strategic assets, wants its officer to head the body on a permanent basis while retaining the tri-services nature of the body at the lower level. "The majority of the assets such as the long-range Agni missiles are held by the Army and therefore, the control of the SFC should be with us," an Army official said on Monday. The SFC has the nuclear-capable Prithvi (150 to 350-km range), Agni-I (700-km) and Agni-II (2,500km) ballistic missiles under its operational control at present. Incidentally, the Agni-2 was successfully test-fired by the SFC on Monday off the coast of Odisha. Although defence sources termed this meeting as routine, others including defence analysts are of the view that the meeting assumes significance due to ongoing counter-infiltration operation in Keran sector of J&K on the LOC for the

last two weeks. Here it is pertinent to note that the defence forces are engaged in a fierce counter-infiltration operation on the LOC in Keran sector where a group of 35-40 heavilyarmed infiltrators were blocked by the alert forces and the operation is still on in Keran sector of the state’s Kupwara district. Earlier on Friday, Army chief General Bikram Singh had dismissed the speculations that a Kargil-like situation had developed in Keran sector. The Army has been fighting around 40 terrorists backed by Pakistan Army. General Singh had also made it clear that the terrorists have not occupied any Indian village along the Line of Control. “It is nothing like that. It was an infiltration attempt by 30 to 40 terrorists,” he told reporters when asked whether a Kargil-like situation has developed in Keran sector. See Service Chiefs on Pg. 11

Enclave blocked traffic and staged a sit-in on the road which resulted in traffic jam. It was only after an hour that police managed to pacify the protestors who later on dispersed peacefully. Police called some of the family members to the police station and assured them that the case would be investigated on fast track basis. The protestors said that in August this year Zahid Iqbal Bhat son of Muhammad Iqbal Bhat resident of Padshahi Bagh got missing and after which his dead body was fished out from the river Jehlum near Lal Ded Hospital. They said the body carried visible torture marks which indicated that Zahid has been murdered. “Why police failed to nab the murderers after it was able to recover the watch and mobile phone from some suspects. The cell phone of Zahid Iqbal was recovered from one suspect namely Ruhail Ahmed resident of Padshahi Bagh and next day the wrist watch and the clothes of the deceased were also recovered by the police. Moreover, police continued their investigation and arrested a number of suspects and interrogated them to find more clues, but till date police is silent and did not come up with the facts,” one of the family members of Zahid told CNS. The protestors said that it is astonishing that how one can abduct and later on murder an innocent lad like Zahid. They alleged that some police officers are trying to sabotage the entire episode and probe and are playing with the sentiments of the family members and residents of the area. Amid raising slogans against police and the present government, the protestors warned that if murderers are not arrested they would start an agitation and would come on roads.

Uri, October 07: Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Mr. Taj Mohi ud Din today said the border town of Uri has seen a turnaround during last decade and the day is not far when cent per cent achievement would be recorded in critical sectors like power distribution, water supply, education and healthcare. Addressing a well-attended public meeting here today, the Minister said these are not mere slogans or rhetorics but the factual details available on the ground. Elaborating, Mr. Taj said it was during his tenure that Uri got the first college, three higher secondary schools and 16 high schools. He said the number of middle schools, which stood at 26 before his representing the area, rose to 95. Similarly 200 more primary schools were opened in the area taking the number to 270. The Minister said there were 109 ICDS centres in Uri in 2002 which stand at 455 with the spread of nutritional programme in every nook and corner of the constituency. So was the case, he said, with health centres which rose from 03 to 12 during this period. Mr. Taj said there were no filtration plants or lift irrigation schemes in Uri and 46 such filtration plants and seven lift irrigation schemes

were set up during the last decade or so. He said the road length in Uri stood at 75 kilometres in 2002 which has been increased to a whopping 500 kilometres or more as more and more areas and habitations are being covered through road networks. The Minister said that water supply distribution in Uri, which was 26 % ten years ago, has risen to 97 %, among the highest in the State. So is the case with power distribution, he said, which has risen from 34 % in 2002 to 85%. He said soon cent per cent coverage in water and power distribution would achieved in the town. Asking people to stand guard these achievements, the Minister said they should look through the designs of vested interest elements who have no sympathy with them and are in fact harming their interests. Mr. Taj said with this pace, Uri and its inhabitants have a right to look for a better future for which he has many big plans. He asked people to remain united and extend a helping hand to him to completing these plans and projects. F o r m e r M L C , M r. spawned a great deal of anger in the public in general and the political class in particular in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The charges, being of serious nature, need to be probed in order to arrive at truth which can be shared with the general public. Without any specific details the finger of suspicion is being pointed towards all mainstream politicians. This has caused enormous damage to the institutions of democracy in the state and allowed forces inimical to the democratic processes here to paint all mainstream politicians as paid operatives of the Army. I would request you to ask the Ministry of Defence to share the contents of the above mentioned report with the State Government and also disclose the names of the people to whom the money has allegedly been transferred. Such a course of action will help clear the confusion and doubts from the minds of the people and restore, to a significant extent, credibility of mainstream political parties/members amongst our people”. The Chief Minister reiterated this demand and said that in order to restore the credibility of the politicians and democratic institutions including those of Panchayats, it is the need of the hour that Central Government would institute a probe into the matter in a time bound and transparent manner. Omar Abdullah said that by asking questions to Retired Army Chief about his role should not be dubbed as belittling the stupendous role of Army and the high credibility of Indian Armed Forces which have given huge sacrifices for safeguarding the borders and ensuring safety and security of the people. “Asking Retired General about his extra-curricular role does not in any way contribute to belittling the Indian Army”, he said and maintained that the findings were identified by the Army itself which got leaked and became the subject matter for political and media discussion. He said the mode of the House to censure Retired General V. K. Singh for his statements made by him in public as a private person should not be painted as any attempt at criticizing the institution of Indian Army. “We have always saluted Army for the good work it has rendered, but whenever we thought some shortcomings we categorically brought those to the notice of the Army. This is the democracy and we live in democratic set up but not in a dictatorial system”, he said and added that the Retired General has played with the honour of the mainstream politicians and they are in their right to demand a probe in the allegations so that facts come to fore “Dood Ka Dood, Pani Ka Pani”. Omar Abdullah said that he has not asked the Agriculture Minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir whether he has taken Rs. 1.19 crore for toppling his government. “I leave this to his conscience whether he has taken it or not but if I had believed that he has taken it to topple my government I would have asked him to resign”, he said maintaining that even a Municipal Corporation could not be toppled by Rs. 1.19 crore not to talk of the State Government. Omar Abdullah said that the disclosures made by Retired General have put the democratic institutions in the State to most dangerous threat which these have not come across so far. “Retired General’s differences with me or his opposition to AFSPA is irrelevant in this regard. For that matter the serving Army Chief has also not agreed to the partial revocation of AFSPA. The matter is under discussion and would be resolved”, he said separating this issue from the main issue of disclosures made by the Retired General. The Chief Minister moved a one line resolution for urging the Union Government to constitute an inquiry into the allegations made by Retired General V. K. Singh, in a time bound and transparent manner. The House adopted the resolution unanimously which reads as: “The House unanimously resolves that the allegation made by Retired General V. K. Singh should be enquired in a time bound and transparent manner by the Government of India”.

Never ending electricity woes of Kashmiris

T

he winter is yet to set in but the electricity has started hide and seek play with Kashmiris who will be left high and dry after the Shahi Darbar moves to Garam Pathri (winter capital) of the state. This has been now the fate of Kashmiri people for years together. Every now and then the government swears to improve the power situation in the valley at the beginning of every year and by the end of the year the people do not find any betterment in the power scenario. Billions of dollars have been spent so far on power generation, many mega power plants set up across the state, millions spent on micro hydel projects and other sources of energy but the plight of a common man does not seem to end in near future. The Salal project, the Dull Husti, the Uri hydel, the Baglihar etc etc but the Kashmiri homes remained dark weather summer or winter. The condition becomes pathetic as soon as the Darbar along with all viceroys and lords moves from Srinagar and hardly anybody amongst them is seen anywhere in the valley and if at all anybody is seen, he is not even ashamed of declaring that he has directed the directionless administration to improve power situation even though he himself knows that when there is no electricity how can they improve it. These rhetoric have been narrated time and again and people are now fed up and do not believe even a single word of these political viceroys whose only aim is to show their faces on official electronic media as no private channel ever bothers to include these false announcements in their news bulletins. Gone are the days when a minister’s statement used to be the final word and law unto itself but nowadays these statements are treated with utter disdain by Babus who are only interested in their own comforts. The state has a potential of generating over 24,000 Mega Watts of electricity but who is bothered to tap and harness this natural wealth in this state. No past government has ever tried to do something in this regard and it is because of that inaction that the state is suffering at present. If the previous governments would have given prominence to this field the state would have gone miles ahead on the path of self sufficiency in the field of power generation which in turn would have made it possible for this state to progress and prosper in leaps and bounds.

Voting Right: Power of the Powerless

‘Power of the Powerless’ presupposes the division of the society into two classes – Powerful and Powerless. The world ‘Power’ can be dissected into further classification such as political power, economic power and social power. The general belief or feeling is that the power – political, economic and social – is centered in the hands of a few who can be termed as powerful. But the moot question is whether the so-called powerless are really powerless. I do not think so – in so far as the sharing or enjoyment of political power in India is concerned, which, in my opinion, is the mother of all other powers and a really potent means to achieve those powers. In this Article, I propose to dilate on this aspect, namely, political power of the Power of the Powerless. The Constitution of India proclaims that India is a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic. Giving expression to the solemn resolve of the Constitution makers, the Preamble to the Constitution secures to all the citizens of India, among other things, Justice, Social, Economic and Political; and also Equality of status and of opportunity. The ‘Objective Resolution’ moved by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 13th December, 1946 in the Constituent Assembly, which set out the agenda and goal of the Constituent Assembly, that Assembly declared its firm and solemn resolve, to inter alia, guarantee and secure to ‘all the people of India justice, social, economic and political; equality of status, of opportunity, and before the law; freedom of thought, expression, belief, faith, worship, vocation, association and action, subject to law and public morality’ and to provide adequate safeguards ‘for minorities, backward and tribal areas, and depressed and other backward classes’. The foundation for such resolve of the Constituent Assembly was laid down, much earlier in 1928, by a committee under the Chairmanship of Shri Moti Lal Nehru, appointed at an all-party conference held in Bombay in May, 1928. Pandit Nehru in his inaugural address as the President of India National Congress at Lucknow session in 1936 further elaborated the point as under:“I am convinced that the only key to the solution of world’s problems and of India’s problems lies in socialism. Socialism is, however, something even more than an economic doctrine; it is a philosophy of life. I see no way of ending the poverty, the vast unemployment, the degradation and the subjection of the Indian people except through socialism.” In the Indian scenario, it was Mahatma Gandhi who set the goal to wipe every tear from every eye. Gandhiji held that freedom is a mockery so long as men starved, were naked and pined away in voiceless anguish. Gandhiji’s fight for emancipation of Harijans will always be reckoned as the most glorious aspect of his fight for human rights and dignity. Apart from socialism as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the founding fathers of the Constitution enshrined Democracy as one of the inalienable basic features of the

Constitution of India. Democracy has been best defined by Abraham Lincoln as ‘Government of the people, for the people and by the people’. Democracy is thus the real empowerment of the people – both powerful as well as powerless. In order that even the so-called powerless, who have been suffering for ages due to economic backwardness or social exploitation, untouchability and other evils which have plagued the Indian society on the grounds of caste, creed, race, religion, etc., are ensured justice and equality as enshrined in the preamble to the Constitution, the Constitution makers took the most historic step by providing in the Constitution, in Article 326, for ‘universal adult suffrage’ for choosing their representatives to the House of the People and State Legislative Assemblies. It was truly an historic decision and real empowerment of the powerless. By this decision, the Constitution also gave equal rights to women in the matter of their democratic rights, whereas, even in the West, the women were still struggling for such equality in the matter of their right to franchise. The most notable feature in this truly historic decision was the fact that an overwhelming majority, nearly 84%, of the people in India at the time of the adoption of the Constitution in 1950 were still illiterate, and mostly living in villages, and had not yet tasted the fruits of scientific and technological advancement. Quite paradoxically, in the present day political scenario, the socially backward and economically weak are looked upon as powerless and seen as ‘vote banks’. But the mere fact that they are rewarded by the political parties as vote banks shows their real strength to turn the fortunes of many a stalwarts. All political parties try to woo them in their favour by various sorts of inducements in the form of new employment guarantee schemes, housing projects, financial subsidy and other grants and concessions. The too frequent elections in recent times at various levels – parliamentary, state, local – have in fact proved to be a boon for them, as that has brought the power seekers to their doorsteps. Another significant step taken by the Constitution makers in ensuring equality of opportunity, was the provision in the Constitution, in Article 325, that there shall be one general electoral roll for all electors of a constituency and no person shall be ineligible for inclusion in any such roll or claim to be included in any special electoral roll for any constituency on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex or any of them. But, at the same, the founding fathers of the Constitution were also not oblivious of the facts that some down trodden sections of the Indian society, that is to say, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, needed special protection and impetus for the amelioration of their social status and dignity. This was the motivating force for reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their population, in the House of the People and State Legislative Assemblies. By the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution in 1992, even women have been given

exclusive seats to the extent of 1/3rd of the seats in Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and Panchayats. A similar reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures is also being considered, and being agitated for, but an amicable formula for such reservation has so far eluded a consensus among the political parties and parliamentarians. In order to ensure that the potent weapon or power given to the powerless under the Constitution in the form of their voting right at elections to Parliament and State Legislatures does not remain a mere paper provision, the Constitution has entrusted the duty of ensuring free and fair elections to the Election Commission of India. It is a permanent constitutional authority, insulated from the executive interference, so that it discharges its sacred constitutional responsibility of conducting free and fair elections, which is so vital for the democracy to flourish and deepen its roots. And the Election Commission, on its part, can take due credit and pride in the fact that it has faithfully discharged its sacred constitutional responsibility and fulfilled the aspirations of the teeming millions of the country. The results of the fourteen general elections to the House of the People and more than 300 general elections held to the State Legislative Assemblies have evidently demonstrated, not only the successful accomplishment of the task assigned to the Commission by the Constitution, but also the judicious way the so-called powerless people of the country have exercised their power of vote, showing their political maturity. Even the sitting Prime Minister of the country, and many a sitting Chief Ministers of the States, have suffered defeats and seen the fall of the mighty at the hands of these ‘Powerless’ people of the country when they used their real power of ballot in the not too distant past. On the other hand, the rise of the poor – humble sons of the soil, local school teachers and others lowly placed in the social order – to the highest elective offices in the country bears ample testimony to the power of ballot in the hands of the so-called powerless. The Election Commission does everything within its powers and in its allotted domain to ensure that the power of vote to the powerless is exercised by them according to their own free will and judgement. · By a constant and close watch on the preparation and revision of electoral rolls, every precaution is taken by the Commission to ensure that all eligible adult Indian citizens are brought on the electoral rolls and no eligible elector, particularly those belonging to weaker sections of the society, are excluded from the electoral rolls by any manipulations by the so-called powerful or political bigwigs. · As a safeguard against any attempt to deprive the weaker sections of the society of their right to vote, the Election Commission has launched the scheme of Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs), at the State cost, in all States and Union Territories and each elector is now allowed to vote only after his identity is properly checked and established

by means of these EPICs or any other alternative documents specified by the Commission. · The preparation of Photo Electoral Rolls containing the photos of the electors alongwith their other particulars is the next step in this direction. · Polling stations are provided as near as possible, normally within a walking distance of not more than 2 Kms, to the hamlets, locality or villages of the weaker sections, so that they may not have to traverse long distances to go to their polling stations on the day of poll. In one case in Kerala, the Commission has provided a polling station in a remote area for just one elector, and in a few other far-flung places in the North-East, polling stations have been provided for just one family of four or five electors. · In order that the electors of weaker sections are not prevented by use of muscle power by intimidation, coercion or physical violence from exercising their vote according to their free will and choice, the Commission deploys adequate police forces – particularly the Central Para Military Forces – in the areas inhabited by them – not only on static duty at polling stations but also for area domination and patrolling duties to instil a feeling of confidence and assurance in their minds. · Observers are appointed by the Commission in each constituency to keep a close watch on the use of money power in poll expenses, so that the candidates even with moderate means can contest elections on a reasonably level playing field. · The introduction of Electronic Voting Machines is another significant step taken by the Commission to make the voting right of the poor and illiterate more effective. These machines have made the recording of votes by them not only simpler but also error free, whereby each vote cast by them is duly recorded for the candidate of their choice and no vote goes waste, unlike in the past, by indistinct voting mark. · Facilities are being provided in the voting machines to enable the visually impaired electors to vote by use of Braille; ramps are being provided at polling stations and, as far as practicable, all polling stations are being brought down to the ground level of the buildings housing the polling stations, to enable the physically handicapped electors to enter their polling stations. · Awareness campaigns are being arranged and undertaken by the Commission to educate the electors, particularly those belonging to weaker sections of the society, about their rights, particularly the right to vote, under the Constitution. · As part of electors’ right to information, all candidates are now required to disclose their criminal antecedents, if any, assets and liabilities and their educational qualifications, so that the electors can make an informed choice in the matter of exercise of their potent power of vote in their hands. In nutshell, the Election Commission is not sparing any effort to see and ensure that the ‘Power of the Powerless’, that is to say, the right to vote, is made more powerful, effective and meaningful.

How to avoid pain during injection

Before administering an injection, health professionals commonly tell us, "Don't look and it won't hurt," and a new study has proved that this common advice really does reduce pain.

A group of German investigators has found that, in fact, your past experience with needle pricks, along with information you receive before an injection, shape your pain experience. "Throughout our lives, we repeatedly experience that needles cause pain when pricking our skin, but situational

expectations, like information given by the clinician prior to an injection, may also influence how viewing needle pricks affects pain," said lead author Marion Hofle, a doctoral student in the research Multisensory Integration group led by Dr. Daniel Senkowski, at the Charite - Universitatsmedizin Berlin and the University Medical Center HamburgEppendorf. While watching video clips showing a needle pricking a hand, a Q-tip touching the hand, or a hand alone, study participants concurrently received painful or non-painful electrical stimuli applied to their own hand. The clips were presented on a screen located above the participants' hand, giving the impression that the hand on the screen belonged to them. Participants reported that their pain was more intense and more unpleasant when they viewed a needle

Best ways to treat bug bites Romantic as the approaching monsoon might be, it is also during this stormy season that we suffer from bug bites, which bring with them disease and distress. When it comes to treating bug bites there are endless options. But have you ever wondered which treatment works best for you? Today we are digging into the most popular and trusted tips to treat bug bites. Read on... Treating bug bites using household items. Try and rub ivory soap over the itched area. If ivory soap is not available, try and use dry soap as much as possible. Do remember to treat the infected area with a dab of running alcohol and then with a piece of tape. Try and apply ice packs or ice cubes over the area for instant relief. Treating bug bites using dabbers. Try and apply a quicker on the infected area for faster relief. A few of the topical suggestions, which you can apply directly to the affected area, are nail polish, toothpaste, mouthwash, honey or a few drops of rubbing alcohol. Apart from this, you can also try rubbing a hot tea bag on the affected area. Treating bug bites using homemade pastes. As soon as you get a bite, mix a mixture of the below mentioned fresh pastes. Make sure that the consistency and thickness of the paste is smooth, so that it stays on the affected area and does not run down. The pastes you can make at home are:

- Salt and water - Aspirin and water - Meat tenderizer and water - Baking soda and water - Aspirin and alcohol mixture

Treating bug bites using commercial products, creams and lotions. Some of the lotions that you must try and use as soon you get a bug bite are caladryl, calamine lotion, benadryl cream, orajel, tiger balm, bag balm and the gold bond medicated powder.

Treating bug bites using essential oils and herbal leaves. As far as the application of essential oils is concerned, try and apply cedar oil, lavender oil, astringent or tea tree oil.

pricking a hand than when they saw a hand alone. In addition, observing needle pricks increased the unpleasantness of pain compared to viewing Q-tip touches. These findings were paralleled by enhanced activity of the autonomic nervous system, as measured by pupil dilation responses. This demonstrates that previous painful experiences with needles enhance unpleasantness of pain when viewing needle pricks. Situational expectations also influenced perceived pain intensity. Prior to the stimulation, participants were told that either the needle or the Q-tip clip was more likely to be associated with painful than with non-painful electrical stimulation. The researchers found that presentation of clips that were more likely to be associated with pain lead to higher pain intensity experiences than the pre-

sentation of clips that were less likely to be associated with pain. This shows that expectations regarding the painfulness of medical treatments influence the intensity of pain that the treatment ultimately produces. Taken together, the study reveals several important findings. "Clinicians may be advised to provide information that reduces a patient's expectation about the strength of forthcoming pain prior to an injection," Hofle noted. She further stated that, "because viewing a needle prick leads to enhanced pain perception as well as to enhanced autonomic nervous system activity, we've provided empirical evidence in favour of the common advice not to look at the needle prick when receiving an injection." Their research has been published in the May issue of Pain.

Air pollution: Impact on heart health It’s a known fact that heart attacks are linked to hypertension, diabetes and smoking. Now urban India can add one more cause of concern to heart health disease, air pollution. It affects the expansion and contraction of the blood vessel as a result affecting blood pressure. According to French researchers from the Paris Cardiovascular Research Center, the high levels of main pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and soot particles adversely affect the heart. What is more unnerving is the fact that if each of the main pollutants is increased by 10 micrograms

per cubic metre, you won’t know the difference in the air you are inhaling. But this heavily polluted air increases your chances of having a heart attack by 1-3 percent. According to cardiologist Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, “Particulate matter absorbs ultraviolet B waves, responsible for vitamin D. This deficiency leads to heart diseases. Exposure to high pollution level also increases chances of thrombosis (blood clot) and blockages in the heart.” There are four ways pollutants can increase your chances of cardiovascular diseases. - If your blood pressure increases, your heart rate increases and constricts blood vessels. - The number of blood clots increases as the stickiness of the blood increases. - It results in the thickening of the arterial wall. - Lead is an agent that triggers high blood pressure. However, there is some-

thing - albeit very little - that you can do about combating air pollution’s effects on your heart health. Dr. Aggarwal explains, “One can practice simple exercises and take some precautionary measures to avoid diseases caused by air pollution.” - Use air conditioners to filter the air during times of peak symptoms. - Close your windows at home as well as when you’re in the car. - Showering before going to bed washes allergens from your hair and skin which helps reduce contamination of the bedding. - Use saline sprays and rinses to wash off the allergens from the nasal lining after you have been outdoors. - Practice Pranayama and Jalneti to cleanse your cardiorespiratory system. Dr. KK Aggarwal, Padmashri and Dr. B C Roy National Awardee, is a consultant for Medicine and Cardiology at Moolchand Heart Hospital, New Delhi.

Good cholesterol may not cut heart attack risk A new study has challenged a tenet of modern medicine that raising a person's HDL - the so-called 'good cholesterol' will necessarily lower the risk of a heart attack. The new research underscores the value of using genetic approaches to test biological hypotheses about human disease prior to developing specific drugs. A team led by researchers from the Broad Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) explored naturally occurring genetic variations in humans to test the connection between HDL levels and heart attack. By studying the genes of roughly 170,000 individuals, the team discovered that, when examined together, the 15 HDL-raising variants they tested do not reduce the risk of heart attack. "It''s been assumed that if a patient, or group of patients, did something to cause their HDL levels to go up, then you can safely assume that their risk of heart attack will go down," said senior author Sekar Kathiresan, director of preventive cardiology at MGH, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an associate member of the Broad Institute.

"This work fundamentally questions that."

Each of the variants Kathiresan and his colleagues studied reflects potentially distinct ways the body might raise HDL. The findings raise significant questions about whether developing drugs against the genes explored in this study, which involves an international team of investigators to bring together patient samples, will prove effective in lowering heart attack risk across the population. "Our study highlights the value of human genetic information in understanding disease biology prior to developing and testing drugs in the clinic," said co-author David Altshuler, director of the Program in Medical and Population Genetics at the Broad Institute and a Harvard Medical School professor at MGH. "This kind of research is not about personalized prediction rather, it''s about testing mechanisms and therapeutic hypotheses before drug discovery." In the blood, cholesterol is carried by particles called lipoproteins, which come in different sizes and densities. These include HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, and LDL, or low-density lipoprotein. There is a well-studied connection between elevated LDL, often called the "bad cholesterol," and heart attack. Decades of research, including studies of genetic disorders in humans and the discovery of the LDL receptor and its role in cholesterol regulation, paved the way for the development of life-saving drugs known as statins. This work showed beyond any reasonable doubt that many different methods of reducing a person''s LDL levels lower the risk of heart disease. To investigate, Kathiresan teamed up with colleagues from MGH, the Broad Institute, and beyond, including Voight and cofirst author Gina Peloso. Together, the researchers looked to the human genome for help. Individuals typically carry two copies of each gene in the genome; which copy a child will inherit from each parent is essentially a random decision, like flipping a coin. This phenomenon, sometimes called "Mendelian randomization," provides a powerful means of testing connections between genes, biomarkers, and disease - similar to the way that randomized controlled clinical trials can evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs.

CT scan on kids Naturopathy: Promoting triples cancer risk

wellness and well being

A patient undergoing CT scan.Children subjected to CT scans with high radiation doses face a three time increased risk of suffering from leukaemia and brain cancer during their lifetime. In the most conclusive evidence till date, a study published in British medical journal Lancet on Wednesday says radiation exposure received from two to three CT scans of the head in childhood (aged under 15 years) — giving a cumulative dose of around 60 milli-Grays (mGy) can triple the risk of later developing brain cancer. On the other hand, around 5 to 10 such scans (cumulative dose around 50 mGy) could triple the risk of developing leukemia. The authors from the Newcastle University studied around 180,000 patients who underwent a CT scan between 1985 and 2002 from 70% of the UK's hospitals. These data were then linked to cancer incidence and mortality reports in the UK National Health Service Registry between 1985 and 2008. From this, they calculated excess incidence of leukemia and brain tumours. The dose of radiation received by the brain and bone marrow varied by age and body part scanned. A total of 74 from 178,604 patients were diagnosed with leukemia and 135 of 176,587 were diagnosed with brain cancer. The authors say that, of every 10,000 people between the ages of 0-20 years receiving 10 mGy from a CT scan, there would be about one expected excess leukemia case, whereas there were would be one excess case of brain cancer for every 30,000 people. Applying the dose estimates for one head CT scan before the age of 10 years, this would translate into approximately one excess case of leukaemia and one excess brain tumour per 10,000 patients in the decade after the first exposure

A philosophy that promotes health via mental, physical, emotional and energetic methods, naturopathy is a holistic school of philosophy. Naturopathy brings to light the healing power of nature and lays stress on diet, exercise, relaxation and naturopathic therapies as means of empowering people. A mixture of acupuncture, hydrotherapy, meditation, herbal remedies, chiropractic and homeopathy, today we will understand in depth the science behind naturopathy, its principles and whether it really can be used as an alternative to conventional medicine or not. Understanding the term - naturopathy: Naturopathy is an alternative approach to healing, which uses one's body's ability to heal and stay healthy. Rather than focusing on illnesses alone or treating a person when he or she is sick, the approach of naturopathy focuses more on promoting wellness. Naturopathic treatments can be exercise therapy, stress management, acupuncture, massage therapy, dietary supplements, hydro-

therapy and homeopathy. A botanical treatment of naturopathy is mostly prescribed by a specialist, who uses a host of remedies. Top six principles of naturopathy: Essentially, naturopathy is based on six top principles. The are: -Lead to no harm -Focus on preventing illness -Nature can heal -Identify for causes and treat them and not just symptoms -Educate patients as awareness is half the battle won and -Respect the emotional, social, genetic and environmental factors of health. Ongoing research in naturopathy: Many people who have received naturopathic treatments, which include deep breathing exercises, dietary counselling and acupuncture, have felt enormous relief in areas such as lower back pain. Naturopathy has also helped in treating fever, vertigo and diarrhea in many patients. Apart from this, revolutionary studies in the field of rheumatoid arthri-

tis and naturopathy are showing positive results. However, naturopathy can never be a replacement for conventional medicine. Many doctors and medical experts are not in favour of using naturopathic medicines as a replacement for conventional medicines. Herbal medications, along with nutritional supplements can lead to the same level of side effects as conventional medicines can. Best is to consult your healthcare professional, and ask him if you should seek a naturopath, if there is no relief from conventional medication. Finding the right naturopathy practitioner is important. A good naturopath must be considerate towards his patients, when understanding his/ her needs and health condition. This health practitioner should have a degree from an accredited program and a good amount of experience. Read doctor's testimonial and ask other patients before placing complete trust in a naturopath.

A study that investigated whether physical activity alleviates the symptoms of depression has found that there is actually no benefit. Research published in the British Medical Journal suggests that adding a physical activity intervention to usual care did not reduce symptoms of depression more than usual care alone. This study contrasts with current clinical guidance, which recommends exercise to help those suffering from mental illness.Mental illness affects one in six adults in Britain at any one time.To carry out the study, researchers recruited 361 patients aged between 18 and 69 years, who had recently been diagnosed with depression.Trial participants were then split into two groups to receive either the physical activity intervention in addition to usual care, or usual care on

Most people brush their teeth in wrong way Though most people brush their teeth regularly, only one in ten does it in a way that effectively prevents tooth decay, according to a study in Sweden.

Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg say almost all Swedes regularly brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste, yet only few know the best brushing technique, how the

toothpaste should be used and how fluoride prevents tooth decay. In two separate studies, Pia Gabre and her colleagues at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, studied the toothbrushing habits of 2013 Swedes aged 15-16, 31-35, 60-65 and 76-80 - how often and for how long, how often fluoride toothpaste is used, how much toothpaste is put on the toothbrush and how much water is used during and after the toothbrushing. The results showed that only ten percent of the population use toothpaste in the most effective way."Swedes generally do brush

their teeth, but mostly because of social norms and to feel fresh rather than to prevent tooth decay," said Gabre.Swedes could improve their oral health considerably by learn-

ing how to maximise the effect of fluoride toothpaste, she asserted. However, the study found that 80 per cent are generally happy with how they take care of their teeth."Most of the interviewed subjects learned to brush their teeth as children, by their parents. Even if they have been informed about more effective techniques later in life, they continue to brush their teeth like they always have," stated Gabre. The researchers concluded that Swedes' knowledge about toothbrushing must be improved and that the provided advice must be made simpler, clearer and more easy to use.

its own and were followed up for 12 months to evaluate any change in their symptoms. But the study discovered that adding exercise failed to alleviate symptoms of depression more than usual care alone, only increasing levels of physical activity. The study, carried out by teams from the Universities of Bristol, Exeter and the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, is the first large-scale, randomized controlled trial to analyse the effects of exercise on depression.Earlier most of the evidence for the positive effect of physical activity in treating depression had originated from studies of small, non-clinical samples using interventions that would not be practicable in an NHS setting."Numerous studies have reported the positive effects of physical activity for people suffering from depression.

Hope for arthritis treatment Doctors at Southampton General Hospital are extracting stem cells from the bone marrow of patients in need of hip repair due to osteonecrosis - a condition where poor blood supply causes significant bone damage leading to severe arthritis. These cells are mixed with cleaned, crushed bone from another patient who has had their own hip replaced and used to fill the hole made by surgeons after dead and damaged tissue has been removed from the joint, according to the newspaper. Arthritis usually strikes people between 30 and 50 years of age.

Protesters step up attacks on houses of Congress leaders in Seemandhra Agencies HYDERABAD: Angry Seemandhra protesters stepped up their attacks on the residences and other establishments of Congress ministers, MPs and MLAs on Monday. The ruling party leaders are already the target of the protesters for the last 65-odd days of the agitation launched to oppose the division of Andhra Pradesh. But despite the heavy police presence outside their premises, the attackers came in huge numbers on Monday and sent across a clear message: ‘Quit your posts or else face the brunt of the people’s fury.’ In Visakhapatnam, a group of protesters led by YSR Congress activists tried to storm into the camp office of union minister D Purandeswari. On not being allowed in, some activists tried to jump over the barricades upon which the cops resorted to lathicharge. The same protesters earlier tried to barge into the residence of state minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao but were chased away by lathicharging policemen. In the meantime, students staged separate protests outside the residences of minister Ganta and Congress MLAs M Vijayaprasad and Vijayakumar in the port city. In Kakinada, YSR Congress activists staged a dharna outside Union minister Pallam Raju’s residence and demanded his resignation. Cops had to resort to lathicharge to scatter away the protesters. Outside Ran-

garaya Medical College in Kakinada, the medical staff including doctors performed a mock-autopsy on the effigies of the Union ministers from Seemandhra and demanded their resignations. In Rajahmundry in East Godavari district, employees, lawyers, doctors

and other groups on Monday took out a massive rally that culminated in a dharna outside the local police station demanding stringent action against the sons of Amalapuram MP G Harsha Kumar for having attacked the protesters two days ago even as the town observed a total bandh in protest against the assault by the MP’s sons. The agitators also blackened out Harsha Kumar’s name wherever they spotted it in his constituency as well as on the foundation stones of various schemes. In Krishna district, JAC leaders burnt the effigies of the Union ministers at several places and offered ‘pinda pradanam,’ a ritual where food is

offered to the dead souls. In Tirupati, NGOs, teachers and RTC workers JAC held a ‘sava yatra’ carrying the effigies of local MP Chinta Mohan and Amalapuram MP Harsha Kumar. The activists demanded the resignations of the Congress MPs before burning the effigies near the town club. The protesters also blackened out the name of Tirupati Congress MP Chinta Mohan wherever visible in the temple town. In Rajam, the hometown of state health minister Kondru Murali in Srikakulam district, protesting government employees stormed into his office, put up a ‘To-Let’ signboard, and staged a sit in demanding his resignation. The employees were agitated upon learning that the minister had reprimanded the striking associations during talks to end the impasse in Hyderabad earlier on Monday. In Nellore, YSR Congress workers were arrested when they tried to storm the residences of state minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy and local Congress MLAs M S Krishna Reddy and Anam Vivekananda Reddy. In Rajampet in Kadapa district, cops had to lathicharge protesting students who tried to barge into the residence of Rajampet local Congress MP A Sai Pratap. Similar protests were witnessed in front of the residences of state minister P Balaraju in Paderu and Congress MLA Somu in Araku, both in Visakhapatnam district.

India test-fires nuclear-capable PrithviII missile from Odisha

Sexual assault case: Lookout notice issued against Narayan Sai Agencies

Agencies BALASORE: India on Monday test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile with a strike range of 350km from a test range at Chandipur, about 15km from here. The surface-to-surface missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at about 9.14am, defence sources said. “The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the total launch activities were carried out by the specially formed SFC and monitored by the scientists of DRDO as part of practice drill,” the sources said. “The missile trajectory will be tracked by the DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of Odisha,” they said. “The downrange teams onboard the ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal will monitor the terminal events and splashdown,” they said.Inducted into India’s Strategic Forces Command in 2003, the Prithvi II missile, the first missile to be developed by DRDO under India’s prestigious IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Program) is now a proven technology, said a defence source.“The launch was part of a regular training exercise of SFC and was monitored by DRDO scientists,” the source said. Such training launches clearly indicate India’s operational readiness to meet any eventuality and also establishes the reliability of this deterrent component of India’s strategic arsenal, the source said.Prithvi is capable of carrying 500kg to 1000kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twine engines. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvering trajectory.

SURAT: A lookout notice was issued on Monday against selfstyled godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, a day after fresh sexual abuse complaints were lodged against the father-son duo by two

sisters here. “We have issued a lookout notice against Narayan Sai, son of Asaram,” Surat police commissioner Rakesh Asthana said. “We have informed immigration authorities that a grave offence has been registered against him. This (lookout notice) is a precautionary step so that he cannot leave the country,” Asthana said. Police teams have started investigation in the case and Sai is being traced, he said, adding that they have identified a few locations where he could be. On Sunday, Asthana had said that they will interrogate Sai re-

As the US government moved into the second week of a shutdown on Monday with no end in sight, a deadlocked US Congress also confronted an Oct. 17 deadline to increase the nation’s borrowing power or risk default. Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner vowed not to raise the US debt ceiling without a “serious conversation” about what is driving the debt, while Democrats said it was irresponsible and reckless to raise the possibility of a US default. The last big confrontation over the debt ceiling, in August 2011, ended with an 11th-hour agreement under pressure from shaken markets and warnings of an economic catastrophe if a default were allowed to occur. A similar last-minute resolution remained a distinct possibility this time as well. In comments on Sunday political talk shows, neither

Republicans nor Democrats offered any sign of impending agreement on either the shutdown or the debt ceiling, and both blamed the other side for the impasse. “I’m willing to sit down and have a conversation with the president,” said Boehner, speaking on ABC’s “This Week.” But, he added, President Barack Obama’s “refusal to negotiate is putting our country at risk”. On CNN’s State of the Union, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said: “Congress is playing with fire,” adding that Obama would not negotiate until “Congress does its job” by reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling.Investors were unnerved by the apparent hardening of stances over the weekend, with European shares falling to a fourmonth low on Monday and the dollar and oil prices also slipping. Conservative Republicans in the House have resisted funding the government for the current fiscal year until they extract some concession from Obama that would delay or defund his signature healthcare law.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu reached Delhi on Monday to begin an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the Centre’s decision to carve out Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh. October 3, the Union cabinet decided to go ahead with the process for the creation of Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh. Fresh anti-Telangana protests erupted in Seemaandhra region the very next day, while Naidu in Hyderabad announced his plan for an agitation over the issue. He accused Congress of “ruining” the country and leaving Andhra Pradesh facing a “disaster” with the decision to create Telangana. He termed the Centre’s move “political match fixing”. The former AP chief minister Naidu is now fighting a political battle for survival in the state, say observers. He has also accused Congress of entering into an “arrangement” with TRS and YSR Congress with regard to the bifurcation deci-

sion. Political pundits predict that while Congress and TRS would gain in Telangana, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress party could make big waves in the Seemandhra region. In Hyderabad, YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy, who has

taken a centre-stage in the renewed stir, continued his hunger strike on the third day on Monday. Meanwhile, the anti-Telangana protests entered the fourth day in Seemandhra region on Monday. The power shutdown crippled normal life in 13 districts of Seemandhra (comprising coastal

Andhra and Rayalaseema) as Power Employees’ Joint Action Committee called an indefinite strike on Sunday morning. They had announced on Saturday that 70,000 workers of transmission, generation and distribution companies would go on an indefinite stir.Power production at the Kadapa and Vijayawada thermal units and Srisailam hydro units was also hit. Further tripping could affect the entire southern grid, the employees said. Some media reports said even neighbouring Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala were affected. Due to the power situation, the South Central Railway cancelled the Jan Shatabdi Express running between Chennai Central and Vijayawada, scheduled to leave the city on Monday.Protesters defied curfew and shoot-at-sight orders to clash with police on Sunday. They pelted stones at security forces and the troops retaliated by firing rubber bullets. Curfew was also imposed in Vizianagaram town after day-long violence on Saturday.

garding the complaint. Fresh sexual assault complaints were registered here on Sunday against controversial Asaram and his son Narayan Sai here after two sisters accused the duo of abusing them. Asaram, 75, was arrested in August on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl and has been in prison at Jodhpur in Rajasthan since then. Police registered two complaints — one against Asaram and another against Narayan Sai — of rape, sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges. The complaint against Narayan Sai was registered at Jhangirpura Police Station in Surat, while the one against his father Asaram was transferred to Ahmedabad as the alleged incident happened there. The elder sister in her complaint accused Asaram of repeated sexual assault between 1997 and 2006, during the time she had been living in his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city. The younger sister filed a complaint against Asaram’s son, accusing him of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living in their Surat ashram.

Four Naxals arrested in Chhattisgarh Four Naxalites were arrested on Monday during a search operation in Maoist-hit Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, police said. The cadres were nabbed during a combing operation by personnel of the BSF (Border Security Force) and district force in the forests near Vala village under Koyalibeda police station limits, Kanker Additional Superintendent of Police C.D. Tandon said. Based on specific information regarding presence of Naxals, an operation was launched on Monday morning in the restive Koyalibeda forests, located about 200 km away from the State capital Raipur, he said.On reaching near Vala village, security forces spotted some people fleeing into the jungles following which they rounded up them, he added. Those arrested were identified as — Prem Singh Kudo (35), Siyaram Gawde (28), Jaising Nareti (26) and Anesh Usendi (21) who were allegedly active as sangham members of Maoist in north Bastar.

Power employees up the ante against A.P. division Ex-DU employee, who set herself on fire alleging sexual harassment, dies in hospital

Agencies Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions continued to reel under power crisis as electricity employees of the two areas stood on with their strike on Monday against the Union Cabinet’s decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. The employees of the state power generation, transmission and distribution companies began an indefinite strike on Sunday, which badly affected the power generation and supply situation in the two regions and also Hyderabad. The strike has forced cancellation of several train services and also the ongoing ‘Brahmotsavams’ at Tirumala hills, the abode of Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati. According to Power System Operation Corporation of PowerGrid figures, as many as three transmission lines of 400 kv and another two lines of 400/220 kv were tripped due to the agitations in Seemandhra region. The figures suggested that only 2,990 MW thermal power was produced as against the installed capacity of 6,090 MW yesterday. Similarly, power from the hydel generation stood at 1,694 MW against the installed capacity of 3,937 MW. Several gas-based power plants are also not functioning due to gas shortage problems. Senior electricity officials in Hyderabad would hold talks with the leaders of the striking employees today to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, protests continued across the two regions by pro-united Andhra em-

ployees, who have been on strike since August 13. The employees on Sunday announced a fresh programme of agitations till October 20. They said they preferred to hold talks with the Chief Minister and not with others. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy would hold talks with the striking employees on October 9, according to P Ashok

Babu, president of Andhra Pradesh NonGazetted Officers (APNGOs) association. The indefinite fast launched by YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday last against the state bifurcation entered the third day. TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu began his indefinite fast in Delhi today against the way the Centre set out to divide the state.

NEW DELHI: Pavitra Bhardwaj (40), who tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire in front of Delhi Secretariat, succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning. Pavitra, who was dismissed from the position of laboratory attendant at BR Ambedkar College in 2012, had alleged repeated sexual harassment by college principal, GK Arora. Prior to her dismissal Bhardwaj had repeatedly filed sexual harassment complaints against the college principal in 2009. However, the apex committee of the university ruled in favour of Arora. Her death prompted protests by teachers and students of the college who demanded that the college principal should step down until a probe is on in this case. The demonstrators also accused Delhi Police of shoddy investigation in the case, claiming that no action has been taken against the principal and another employee of the college whom she had named in her suicide note. The woman was sacked from the college two years ago. Police had filed a case of suicide in this case. “We are waiting the postmortem report in the case. Meanwhile, we are questioning the principal and other people in the case,” said deputy commissioner of police (Central) Alok Kumar.

Supreme Court suggests new IPL probe panel Agencies The Supreme Court has suggested the formation of a new threemember panel to inquire into the corruption allegations in IPL 2013, and said that N Srinivasan should continue to abstain from discharging his duties as BCCI president. The hearing to decide on the composition of the inquiry panel is scheduled for Tuesday, but it was reported the court had recommended that former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal head it.A bench of Justices AK Patnaik and JS Kehar also proposed the names of senior advocate and additional solicitor general N Nageshwar Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta to be part of the panel. The bench said that the panel would conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations and submit its report to the Supreme Court. Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) secretary Aditya Verma, who had filed the petition against the BCCI and Srinivasan, said he would request that the Supreme Court monitor the working of the inquiry panel. “We will be satisfied if this probe panel investigation is conducted directly

under the supervision of the honourable Supreme Court,” he said. The court also heard on Monday a plea from the BCCI to allow Srinivasan to resume functioning as president because it said his absence was

affecting cricket administration. The court said it would consider the request if Srinivasan stayed away from all matters concerning the IPL.Srinivasan had been allowed to contest

the BCCI elections on September 29 by the Supreme Court, but with a rider which said that if he won, he could not take charge as president as long as it was hearing the case related to him and the board. That ruling

South Australia’s former international spinner Johan Botha has again had his bowling action called into question, cited and facing another suspension unless he can successfully pass a biomechanical analysis ordered by Cricket Australia. The 31-year-old, who has a history of issues with his action, is in the meantime still eligible to play and bowl in the Ryobi Cup, with the Redbacks due to take on Tasmania at Bankstown Oval on Wednesday. He has 14 days to have the analysis conducted on his action. ‘’Under CA’s Doubtful Bowling Action Proce-

Ready to open innings in all three formats: Rohit Sharma Agencies NEW DELHI: After guiding Mumbai Indians to their second Champions League T20 title, skipper Rohit Sharma said he is ready to open innings in all three formats of the game and that he has been waiting for the opportunity for the last six years. “Modern cricket is such that you cannot lock your place. I am ready for last six years to play in all three formats. Hopefully, I will get an opportunity soon,” Sharma said at the post-match press conference after Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs in the final of the CLT20 on Sunday. “I am waiting for the Test cap and hopefully I’ll get it soon. I am waiting for the right time and opportunity,” he said. A freak injury just before the Nagpur Test in 2010 had delayed his Test

debut but with the West Indies tour round the corner, Sharma would be hoping to finally get to play the traditional format. In February 2010, Sharma was set to make his Test debut against South Africa but he injured himself while playing football in the warm-up on the first

morning of the match. He was also part of the squad for the third Test at home against the West Indies in November 2011 and the four-Test Australia series in 2011-12 but could not make the playing XI. Sharma capped off an

impressive T20 season as a skipper by securing second trophy in a year after winning the Indian Premier League season 6 in May and the Mumbai player admitted there were a lot of expectations from them. “It wasn’t easy for us. There were a lot of expectations and I think we held our nerve well. We showed a lot of character in the tournament,” he said. Sharma said he was never worried about the form of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and called him a “great match winner” for the team. Harbhajan took three wickets in an over during his haul of 4 for 32 to derail Royals’ chase of 203-run target at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. “Harbhajan is a great match winner. I was not worried about his form. He is a big match player and brought us back into the game.

George Bailey dismisses Ian Chappell’s criticism of India-Australia series being badly timed Agencies Mumbai: Oct 7:Stand-in Australia captain George Bailey brushed aside the criticism of former captain Ian Chappell that the OneDay International (ODI) series against India was ill-timed as it was being held just ahead of the Ashes 2013-14 series against England. “I don’t think his comments have any bearing on the team. I don’t think he has been involved with the Australian cricket team in a very very long time. I don’t think his comments have any particular relevance to this group at all,” the Aussie captain said. Bailey, who will lead Australia in the absence of the injured Michael Clarke, said the Ashes series was a long way off and the focus was on the eight games the team will play in India. “In terms of international cricket, it is months away. We have got eight games here. We get back

and have our round of First-Class matches as well. It is a lot to get to before we start the focus on the Ashes. “Certainly as far as this group goes, there is

more of a focus on the ICC World Cup 2015 (to be jointly hosted by his country and New Zealand),”

said the Tasmanian. Australia play one Twenty20 International and then follow that up with a seven-match ODI series against the reigning world champions. The 31-year-old visiting captain also said the way the Australians bounced back to win the ODI series in England after the disappointing display in the Ashes and in the preceding ICC Champions Trophy 2013 was a big confidence booster. “It was great. It was disappointing how we played in the Champions Trophy. India played so well there and we felt the rain had robbed us of a legitimate chance to have a crack at that tournament. We played some really good one-day cricket to finish off the summer in Australia against the West Indies. “So we were feeling pretty confident and it was nice to come across to England on the back of the disappointing Ashes, to see the guys who had been involved in the series to bounce back and perform really strongly,” he said.

Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar: Fairytale journey for one and dream win for the other at CL T20

Agencies

Sachin Tendulkar pats Rahul Dravid The crowd roared and cheered as Rahul Dravid led the Rajasthan Royals on the field and the same welcome was given to Sachin Tendulkar as he walked out to open the innings for Mumbai Indians. The love the fans felt for the two greats of Indian cricket was clear for all to see at the Ferozshah Kotla on Sunday as the legends and their teams faced each other for the Champions League T20 title. Sachin Tendulkar played some of his textbook shots but had to depart for 15 as Rahul Dravid was left with a lot to think as the Mumbai Indians batsmen went on a massive hitting spree. The Rajasthan Royals who were playing for the first time away from home where they won

all their matches started the chase well but the score was too big for them to get to. Rahul Dravid showed his astute captaincy as he chose to promote Sanju Samson to No3 and held himself back in the batting cause. Though Dravid’s team were second best in the final through the tournament they have been the best team. Amid the spotfixing and betting scandal that rocked the IPL which saw three Rajasthan players get caught, Dravid showed his great ability to handle the team and lead them to wins on the trot in the CLT20. Rooney admits Man U’s star players have let Moyes down Agencies Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that the club’s stars have let new boss David Moyes down this season but praised the manager for his decision to hand a start to 18-year-old Adnan Januzaj, who repaid him with a brace. According to the Mirror, Rooney expressed that obviously the manager was under a bit of pressure and the team knew that they had let him down, adding that they had to pull to-

gether for the manager and show the sort of fight they had earlier done there. Moyes himself has a good track record, blooding Rooney as a 16-year-old

and emerging England star Ross Barkley at Everton, the report said.

The England player said Januzaj was a great prospect as he takes the ball, runs at players and has great ability, adding that it was great that the manager had thrown him into the side, especially with what has happened in the last few games. Rahane was awarded the Golden Bat for scoring 288 the most runs in the tournament and his 41-year-old teammate Pravin Tambe bagged the Golden Wicket for the most wickets with 12 scalps. Mumbai Indians’ Dwayne Smith was declared the Man-ofthe-Series and Harbhajan Singh the Man-of-the-match. Sachin Tendulkar was given a fairytale farewell as his team won the CLT20 and added it to their IPL title earlier this year. As Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid bow out of the T20 arena in cricket both men leave as winners - one with a title and the other with pride at a job well done.

Emerging pacers lack killer instinct - Vaas Agencies Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach Chaminda Vaas has criticised the emerging group of seamers in the country’s pace academy for being “soft” and wanting in drive for self-improvement. Having begun his coaching term in February, Vaas, said the bowlers coming through had a long way to go before they can compete at an international standard. “They don’t know how to plan their future,” Vaas said of Sri Lanka’s young bowlers. “Those days when we bowled at the nets we learned something from each net session. We asked the batsman if there was anything wrong with our bowling or if we had made any mistakes, in order to improve our skills. “But nowadays fast bowlers don’t ask such questions. Either they are afraid to ask, or they are soft or their thinking pattern is different. So we have to keep telling them all the time what to do. It will take a long time for them to learn, but the only way to do it is by pushing them because they are not pushing themselves

on their own.”Vaas had also worked with the

New Zealand fast bowling unit on their tour of Sri Lanka last year, and suggested foreign bowlers had a greater aptitude for fast bowling strategy than Sri Lanka’s young bowlers. “The problem is they don’t want learn,” he said. “Only a few of them are keen others don’t even want to watch a match to at least analyse their performance what their mistakes are. They’ve got to think like professionals. Bowlers from other countries know exactly what to do. You don’t have to push them. That’s what we have to learn from them and instill in our fast bowlers.” Sri Lanka’s notoriously unsporting surfaces have been the bane of fast bowlers for years, but Vaas took a dim view of blaming pitches for seam bowlers’ poor returns in domestic matches, and instead prescribed consistency in line and length, and self-confidence as a route to success. “What I have advised these youngsters is being fast bowlers they should be prepared to bowl on any kind of surface. Whether it’s a wicket suiting spin or batting, they have to bend their backs and bowl.
