Omar appeals people to help restore normality ‘Some political parties keep party benefits above human interests’

Srinagar, August 11: In his fervent appeal to the people to help the Administration in restoring peace and tranquility in the areas which witnessed clashes between two groups of the community, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Sunday asked them not to fall prey to the propaganda being propagated by vested interests and rumour mongers. He said some political parties want to flare up the tension to polarize the society keeping eye on elections. “The role of these political parties in 2008 tension is before you. They want to create similar situation by exploiting the sentiments of the people and dividing them on communal grounds now also. Instead of extending helping hand to the Government to restore calm and tranquility, they try to fuel the fire for vested interests”, he said without naming BJP and added that some parties keep their political interests above human interest.

The Chief Minister gave resume of the Kishtwar incident and said that the Administration after observing that local police and para-military forces were not in a position to control the situation, made a written request for the help of Army to the civil Administration in restoring peace and law and order situation in Kishtwar. “Within hours despite many odds, the Army conducted flag march in Kishtwar town and situation was controlled before nightfall”, he said and added that some political parties try to expand the tension to other parts of Jammu, Reasi and Rajouri which made the Administration to call Army to the help of civil Administration in these areas. Addressing a press conference

at SKICC here this morning, Omar Abdullah said that his talking to press at this point in time was to make direct appeal to the people of Jammu and Kashmir through the print and electronic media to rise to the occasion and exhibit their commitment to peace, brotherhood, communal harmony and tolerance which is the trait of people of Jammu and Kashmir. “I want to make direct appeal to people in this regard as I know political parties have their own agenda and interests and my words will fall flat on deaf ears”, he said adding that he wants people to respond to my appeal and help maintain calm and tranquility. He said Hindus and Muslims and other sections of the society have lived in peace

and togetherness in the past and they have to live like brothers in the future. He said political parties want to polarize the situation, and create 2008 and 2010 like situations for their vested interest and vote bank politics. The Chief Minister in reply to a question said that though, he does not blame any political party for initial clashes between two groups of people at Kishtwar but some parties always want to take advantage of these interests for vote bank politics. He questioned the BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s visit to Jammu at this point in time and said that this is politically motivated and not to help the Administration to restore situation. Omar Abdullah said that no leader of any political party would be allowed to visit Kishtwar or any other troubled areas because this would flare up the tension between the two communities and some political parties in such situations keep See Omar on Pg. 7

Communal forces had a field day in Chenab valley Deployment of army help in curbing further spread of violence

Shahana Srinagar, August 11: Shocking but a reality that communal forces once again showing their bad teeth, surfaced in Chenab valley on Eid day and inflicted serious injuries to the traditional communal amity and brotherhood in Jammu region. Starting from a minor argument, the communal clashes engulfed the whole Chenab valley like a wild fire resulting in some causalities as well as destruction of private and public property. Within no time friends turned foes, confronting each other like worst enemies without any respect for each others’ sentiments. It looked as if the communities were on warpath since

centuries. More shocking and astonishing was the spread of communal hatred to those tiny hamlets and villages which had never in the history experienced such a divide between the two communities. Though the authorities with additional forces tried to control the situation but the damage caused to each others property during the intervening night of 9th and 10th August 2013 left a trail of human brutality. The violence spread to other areas of Chenab valley and beyond its borders to Jammu and other places also where several people including over a dozen of policemen and a similar number of civilians were injured in the subsequent clashes. When the peace loving people of these

areas found the things going out of control they approached the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who immediately contacted Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who directed the Defence and Home Ministries to deploy more security forces and by the morning of 11th August

Bottom Line 2013 additional forces including army had taken position in all sensitive areas. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on his own addressing a press conference in Srinagar gave the details of the violence and blamed some political parties without naming them

for fomenting the trouble in Chenab valley eyeing on the forth coming parliamentary and State Assembly elections. Without any doubt it is clear that the communal forces have meticulously implemented their ill designs in erstwhile Doda district with the objective of polarizing the people so that their filthy designs are accomplished. The spread of these communal riots to a large area within no time is indicative of the fact that everything was preplanned so that the government agencies are caught unawares. There have been incidents of communal tension in Kishtwar even earlier but the flare-up this time was so fast that everybody was taken aback. What is intriguing is that despite precaution-

ary measures put in place in the adjacent areas after the first incident, Communal violence engulfed those areas particularly which have been free of any trouble. It is quite evident that the vested interests spreading rumours and baseless information incited the people against each other. If one goes by the assertions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah the finger of suspicion is pointed towards those political parties who are in disarray and whose flock is divided because of their non performance and rejection of communal theories advanced by them. The recent decision of creating a new State of Telangana has fueled these organizations who are bent See Communal Forces on P. 7

political benefits above human interests. He said there are numerous examples of clashes between Hindus and Muslims elsewhere in the Country where BJP did not sent their leadership. He questioned the strategy of BJP of sending their leaders only Jammu and Kashmir and particularly to the Jammu belt in such situations. “This is only aimed at polarizing the situation for political reasons”, he said and asked BJP why not it sent its leaders to the areas of Budgam when there was clash between two groups of Muslims. In reply to a question, the Chief Minister said that Government has already initiated enquiry into the incident of clashes between two groups at Kishtwar and added that the culprits behind the clashes and destruction of property would be booked and handed over severe punishment without any consideration. Omar Abdullah said that situation has already been brought under control in Kishtwar and other parts of Jammu Division. He said Government would ensure restoration of peace and asked the hand of common people to the Government in this task. In reply to another question, the Chief Minister said that the first aim of the Government is to restore peace and tranquility and control the situation in the clash-hit areas and then comes other issues. He said the local Administration in such situations make decisions to allow media, political leaders and others in the troubled areas. He said the first target under such situations is to restore peace and help return of normality. Omar Abdullah said that his Government would take all measures to foil the designs of vested interests in transferring the tension from Kishtwar, where we have been able to bring the situation under control, to other parts of the Jammu Division. “We have called Army help to keep the situation under control and ensure that no untoward incident takes place anywhere in the Division”, he reiterated his appeal to the people to help the Administration to restore peace and maintain tranquility. In reply to another question relating to the violation of ceasefire at LoC by Pakistan, the Chief Minister said that tension at borders has always been detrimental to the State and the people living in borders. He said that Pakistan should stop violating ceasefire and abiding by the agreement it had with India in this regard.

designs of rumour mongers and vested interests and exhibit their tradition and trait of communal harmony, brotherhood, tolerance and amity that has been the characteristic of the people of State for ages. Omar said that Jammu and Kashmir symbolizes pluralistic ethos and peaceful coexistence of different faiths, cultures and ethnic groups. He said all sections of the society have nurtured this trait and withstood onslaughts on State’s secular democratic characteristic. He hoped that people will once again rise to the occasion and untidily foil the designs of the forces who want to wedge the society in the name of religion.

reviewing the progress on the Sewage and Sewerage Treatment, Hydraulic Works, Catchment Management Works, Restoration and Development, Rehabilitation and Resettlement of the Dal dwellers and other aspects of the Dal-Nageen Lake Conservation and Management Project, the Governor stressed the vital importance of each component of the Project being simultaneously implemented within the envisaged time frames if the Dal lake was to be saved. While reviewing the implementation of the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Project for Dal dwellers, the Governor recalled the extensive discussions which he earlier had with the then concerned functionaries, about the crucial importance of ensuring that there was no delay whatsoever in developing tenements/plots, alongwith all required civic amenities, and ensuring that the Dal was early cleared of all habitations and restored to its pristine glory. The Governor also reiterated the crucial importance of all required steps being taken to most effectively ensure that the wastes generated by the houseboats stationed along the various sides of the lake do not pollute the lake. The Vice Chairman of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, in his power point presentation, briefed the Governor about the to-date status of each of the components of the Project and the time schedule for their completion. He stated that out of 27.90 km main trunk sewers, 26.05 km have been completed while the remaining 1.85 km will be completed by September this year. Similarly, 5 intermittent pumping stations have been commissioned while the remaining 5 will be completed by September this year. He further said that 5 Sewage Treatment Plants also stand commissioned. Referring to the development plan of Rakh-i-Arth, Mr. Yasin stated that out of 7,526 kanals of land made available for establishing a housing colony for the Dal dwellers, 4,000 kanals would be under plots, 1082 kanals under roads, 175 kanals under commercial establishments, 50 kanals under institutions, 438 kanals under nodal facilities, 150 kanals under education and health facilities, 189 kanals under play fields, parks and incidental spaces, 50 kanals for religious purpose, 340 kanals for graveyards, 52 kanals for sewage treatment plants and the remaining 1,000 kanals would be the wetlands. Mr. Yasin said that 2,532 structures are being acquired in the Dal Lake, of which only 868 have been so far acquired. He said in addition to this, 631 structures are also proposed to be acquired from Saida Kadal and Ashai Bagh side of the Lake. The Governor has accepted Mr. Yasin’s suggestion to early tour the entire lake area to get a first hand view of the work already done.

Our visit to the area was with the aim of calming the frayed tempers. We are a responsible party,” she said. “NC is fears Congress while Congress fears people. Government is reacting to the voices of opposition and

Daily fails to act on its own to prevent situation going worse. State is run by police and not by the government. It is people versus police now and not people versus government,” Mehbooba claimed. She said that if government is aware as who is behind the communal disharmony, why it has failed to arrest them. “Failures of government has given sense of insecurity to people,” she said.

to visit Kistwar stating that situation was undesirable,” sources added. Confirming the development, Soz told KNS: “It was after due discussions and consideration among Congress leaders that need was felt to set up the committee.” He said he was optimistic about visiting affected areas on Monday and appealed leaders of Jammu to come forward to maintain brotherhood and establishing peace and harmony in the region.

Communal Forces..........

upon to divide the state on communal lines. The demand of a separate Jammu State is nothing but a communal card aimed to destroy the unity and integrity of Jammu & Kashmir. If these communal forces are allowed to thrive like this, the time is not far away when the state will be a worst looser with its tradition, culture, atmosphere of communal harmony and brotherhood totally destroyed and devastated. Now the question arises what should be the role of mainstream secular political parties, the people of influence in both the communities and our youth who should exhibit their broad mindedness and reject the communal overtures of those elements who want to exploit them for their own self interests. These parties and their leaders should rise above their political interest, leave aside the blame-game politics and join hands to defeat the ill designs of communal elements. They should immediately rush to affected areas, convene the meeting of village elders and restore their confidence. As the state government has already announced an enquiry in Kishtwar episode, transferred Dy. Commission and Superintendent of Police, it should make sure that no black sheep in the administration is allowed to complicate the matter by supporting one or the other community directly or indirectly. The decision to stop BJP leader Arun Jaitely from visiting to any affected area is justified because such visits can increase the communal tension and lead to further deterioration of the situation. The government should be brave enough to book persons involved and handover them exemplary punishment to avoid reoccurrence of such incidents in future.

Isolation-The silent killer

T

here is one Punjabi saying“God may not even leave a tree alone” It is a fact that lone trees in desert dry up soon than the one's in dense forest. If it is the case of a tree then how can a man live all alone as by nature he is a social animal. During lifetime we experience problems at one stage or the other. Those are the critical moments, we need supporting system to share adversities and emotional crisis. The joint family system used to tackle such kind of problems very smoothly. Man was not left to face the gust of violent winds which would snatch away all his treasures of emotions with it. But in modern times, the nuclear family system has left everybody in lurch. The working couple has to go through a strenuous routine in order to run the family. They become machines to coup with the fast and lonely lives unable to give proper attention and care to their children which they need most. Consequently, the children too adjust themselves according to the present environment and remain aloof which makes them an Island in themselves. Being depressed, they do not move out, mix with friends or play outdoor games. Instead they shut themselves within the four walls of the house. With the advent of technology, they confine themselves to computers and play games using few buttons. They cannot attain the thrill and spirit of outdoor games. Face to face interaction is must for healthy growth of children. But today the children engrossed in their own fantasy world either sleep for hours together or love to live in confined area which they name comfort zone. This kind of life style is making them depressed and lazy. Social connectivity gives us strength to face any kind of adverse situation as friendship bonds are thicker than the relations. Studies have proved that the cancer patients having friends, peer group or relations, survive for a longer period than the one's who have not friends or relations, feel dim, dejected, unwanted, crib and curse suffer from delusion, hallucination and die soon. These days minor children or adolescents are suffering from adopted isolation which they have created themselves. The old generation too are also facing the same problem. During the last two decades, tremendous changes took place which forced young generation to move out of valley for earning their livelihood. The old parents were left alone in sprawling bungalows with pain beyond expression. But they survived with the support of neighbourhood or friends and relations. For social connectivity, there ought to be nearby public libraries, recreation clubs, parks or the old homes where these old people can sit together and feel the bonds of friendship. However lack of such facilities leave them to live in isolation and die in isolation.

Restoring Health of Kashmir Lakes -A crying need

“The place (Kashmir) is more beautiful than the heaven and is the benefactor of supreme bliss and happiness. It seems to me that I am taking a bath in the lake of nectar here,” wrote Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. Sir Walter Lawrence on visiting Kashmir was compelled to write; “The valley is an emerald set in pearls; a land of lakes, clear streams, green turf, magnificent trees and mighty mountains where the air is cool, and the water sweet …”. Kashmir is endowed with some large pristine lakes and wetlands besides the river Jehlum and its tributaries that make the valley a lively hydraulic society. They include Asia’s largest freshwater lake – the Wullar and India’s most beautiful lake - the Dal. The livelihood of hundreds of thousands of people in tourism trade, fisheries, agriculture etc. depends on these water bodies. They are also major source of water for drinking and other purposes. They also support a rich biodiversity. But, unfortunately these water bodies are shrinking fast due to ecological degradation caused by human interference. The ecological degradation of the water bodies has in recent years reached to crisis magnitude and caused loss of sustainability. Human settlements in and around the lakes and associated commercial activities along their shores have reached to alarming proportions. The farming activities in the catchment areas have considerably increased causing heavy nutrient pollution load and silting into the lake waters. Wullar Lake

Located 60 kilometers from Srinagar at the basin of the Jhelum River, Wullar lake plays a very important role in maintaining the Valley’s hydrographic system. Being a huge absorption basin for floodwaters, it regulates the water regime of the region. The lake meets about 60 percent of the valley’s fish demand. It is also a major source of water borne products like water chestnut and lotus-stem locally known as ‘Nadru’, one of the major local vegetables. Wullar sustains a number of endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna and along with its satellite wetlands it is a favourite winter abode of a number of migratory birds including the common pochard, pintail, common teal, shoveller, mallard and many other species. Wullar has also been a favorite haunt for visitors especially foreign tourists. But all these activities have been adversely affected as the lake has been reduced to less than 70 sq. kms. A century ago, Wullar extended up to almost 190 sq kms and would spread to over 270 sq kms during floods. Human encroachments into the lake, particularly into the associated wet lands, are the chief reason for the lake’s shrinking. According to

R

official estimates over sixty-nine thousand kanals of the lake area have been converted into land and occupied illegally by locals. Environmentalists hold partly government sponsored programmes for agricultural development responsible for shrinking of the lake’s area and changing its ecological character. They allege that parts of wetlands were drained and embankments built to protect settlements as well as crops. A survey conducted in 2006 under court orders revealed that 60,000 kanals area in the lake have been encroached mainly by raising plantations under social forestry programmes of the Forest Department. Experts say that due to it Wullar has lost its capacity to regulate water flows leading to increased floods

shrunk to 25 sq kms two decades ago and is today confined to mere 11 sq kms. It has also become shallower at least by four meters due to silting and accumulation of remains from sewage flowing into it. Like Wullar, it too has suffered due to euthrophication process with weeds chocking the lake and adversely affecting its flora and fauna. Here too annual fish yields have significantly reduced. The lake’s unparalleled spectacular beauty is the main tourist attraction in the valley. Living in the Victorian-era houseboats and enjoying ‘Shikara’ ( small boat) rides in the lake is a life-time experience. Moghul emperors were so overwhelmed by the lake’s beauty that they set up huge gardens on its banks that continue to be favourite of tourists and locals even

Water bodies are shrinking fast due to ecological degradation caused by human interference. The ecological degradation of the water bodies has in recent years reached to crisis magnitude and caused loss of sustainability. and droughts in the Valley. In addition, the sewage from Srinagar and other towns upstream passing into the River Jehlum that flows through Wullar has degraded the lake’s water quality. It has led to increased euthrophication resulting in growth of aquatic weeds that damage local flora and fauna and clogging of its fresh water arteries. This has caused sharp decline in the yield of fish and water borne products in the lake. Records for last 50 years reveal that the fish catch has declined from 10,544 metric tons to 1,476 metric tons per annum. This has endangered the livelihood of more than 8,000 fishermen who depend on Wullar Lake. For its unique hydrological and socioeconomic values, Union Ministry of Environment and Forests included Wullar Lake in its Wetlands Programme as a Wetland of National Importance in 1986. Subsequently, the lake was designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1990. Dal Lake The jewel in Kashmir’s splendid beauty, Dal Lake too has suffered from devastating impact of human greed and negligence. Located in Srinagar, Dal lake has considerably shrank and its crystal clear serene waters are polluted. The lake is

now ranked among 100 most polluted water bodies globally. From 75 sq kms nine centuries ago the lake had reportedly

today. Around 1,200 houseboats, which were first introduced in 1888, are moored year-round in and around the lake. Enjoying huge popularity since their inception, the houseboats in recent years have been in focus for wrong reasons. Local officials say that the houseboats contribute thousands of liters of untreated human waste into lake waters. This has been contested by the houseboat owners association which claims that waste from houseboats account for just 3% of Dal’s pollution. They hold the untreated city sewage flowing into Dal and blocking of the lake’s water circulation canals responsible for degradation of its water quality. While the blame game goes on, Dal suffers. The state government stopped making of new houseboats in 1991 and subsequently ordered a ban on them. But houseboats continue to moore in its waters without any structural changes ordered by the High Court. Manasbal Valley’s deepest lake, Manasbal, located about 30 kms from Srinagar city, is spring-fed like the Dal and other lakes of Kashmir Valley. It harbours rich quantity of water chestnuts, lotus stem and fish specie including Schizothorax, Common Carp and Mirror Carp. It too has suffered from pollution, siltation and encroachments with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) warning in 1997 that the lake would be lost to posterity in absence of immediate conservation measures. The government response came in 2006 with the setting up of the Wullar-Manasbal Development Authority (WMDA). But by that time the lake had shrunk to less than 7 sq kms as more than 4 sq kms had turned into marsh. With community participation, WMDA turned the corner and partly restored the Lake’s health. The

quarrying and lime extraction in the vicinity of Mansbal had completely chocked around 1200 springs, which are its main water source, making the lake to stink. The quarries were closed and lime extraction stopped, which proved an

important conservation measure in r e s t o r a t i o n o f l a k e ’s s p r i n g s . Encroachments in the lake’s peripheral areas were, despite stiff resistance, removed and a pedestrian walkway constructed to demarcate the lake’s periphery. With sustained dredging and de-weeding by the WMDA, the lake’s area increased by one-and-a-half sq kms. WMDA’s success in restoring Manasbal led the environmentalists to say that it should serve as a role model for conservation of Valley’s other water bodies. Conservation The Government has been making efforts to save the water bodies which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed as ‘icons of our heritage, for which the entire people of the state feel concerned.’ A number of reports and action plans have appeared in recent years to come to terms with the problem of these lakes. These include IIT Roorkee report and comprehensive report of House Committee of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for conservation of the Dal (2002), the Study of Wullar Lake, Soil Conservation Scheme for Catchment Area of Wullar Lake, Wullar Wetland Conservation Project (1993), WWF - India funded the Wullar Lake study (1994) and the Ecological Restoration Plan for Erin Watershed of Wullar Catchment (1988) besides studies by Kashmir University and S.P. College, Srinagar on different aspects of various lakes and their satellite wetlands. Several authorities namely the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA), the Wu l l a r M a n a s b a l D e v e l o p m e n t Authority etc. have been set up to clean and conserve the lakes. Crore of rupees have so far been spent by LAWDA on different schemes to conserve Dal Lake. These include setting up of sewage treatment plants, solid waste management, hydraulic works, catchment management works, awareness programme and acquisition of land and structures. There has to be a holistic approach in protecting and rehabilitating the water bodies to almost their pristine glory in which peoples’ active participation is a crucial factor. For this mass awareness has got to be generated so that the common man becomes the custodian of the eco safety of the water bodies. That would be the best insurance against the ‘slow death’ of Kashmir lakes.

Urbanization and Health

apid urbanization and the increase in the population of cities are recognized as being among the major challenges of health development. Between 1990 and 2025, the total urban population in developing countries is projected to increase threefold to almost 61% of the population. It is associated with many health challenges related with water, environment, violence and injury, noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and the risk associated with disease outbreaks. Time and again, the bright lights of the city prove an irresistible attraction for families living in the surrounding countryside. They converge in evergrowing numbers on the already overcrowded cities, only to face shortcoming in housing, water supply, sewage disposal, local transport and job opportunities. The urban poor suffer from a wide range of diseases and other health problems, including chronic diseases and for some, communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. The increasing concentration of people in urban centers has strained the capacity of most governments to provide

basic services. Illegal slums and settlements are common. In such areas, people are usually deprived of access to the basic facilities of drinking water and waste disposal. Resources are not adequate for removal or disposal of waste. Residents have little access to facilities which make for

schistomiasis, dirrhoeal and parasitic diseases that are carried by water or poor sanitation, overcrowding and poor diet. They are also exposed to health risks of modern cities – traffic, pollution etc., and suffer the consequences of social and psychological instability as the traditional

a reasonable quality of life and human development. Thus they often suffer from greater exposure to dust, unpleasant smells, chemicals and noise pollution, and the nature of dwelling makes them less able to withstand such hazards. There is direct link between people dwelling in such conditions and cholera, viral hepatitis, typhoid fever,

support structures of rural areas steadily disappear. Most people in such cities struggle to survive by participating in the informal economic sector where exposure to occupational hazard is of very little concern. Long – term exposure to high levels of air pollution in build up areas can cause respiratory disease, persistent decline in

lung function, carcinogenic effects, effects on the nervous and immune systems, and development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The growing realization that most of the improvements in health which has occurred in the recent past has come about because of action outside the medical sector – economic development, better nutrition and education, better housing, and a cleaner environment - has fostered renewed interest in Preventive Medicine. To make cities healthy, we must, all those who deal with aspects of the urban system that directly or indirectly affect health, involve themselves in urban health planning. Urban planning can promote healthy behaviour and safety through investment in active transport, designing areas to promote physical activity and passing regulatory control on tobacco and food safety. Improving urban living conditions in the areas of housing, water and sanitation will go a long way to mitigate health risks. Such actions do not require additional funding, but commitment to redirect resources to priority interventions, thereby achieving greater efficiency.

Drinking tea: Health benefits of different types of tea

Indian’s love their strong chai, but today there are wide varieties of tea in the market besides our masala and ginger chais. We have heard claims about green tea being good for weight loss and chamomile tea reducing stress, but what are the other kinds of teas and what are their health benefit claims? We take a look at the flourishing tea market, its vast and interesting varieties and the health benefits of different kinds of tea available to us today.

How to brew oolong tea:

- Bring water to a boil and use this water to rinse and heat up the tea cups. - Add the oolong leaves to the tea pot and add boiling water to it. - Cover the tea pot for max three minutes. - Serve the tea while it’s hot. - Tip: You can reuse the leaves a couple of times too Health benefits of oolong tea: This tea is partially fermented and is fast catching up as a weight loss remedy. Besides this, oolong tea is beneficial for lowering bad cholesterol, healthy for type 2 diabetics, patients with heart diseases, reduces high blood pressure, prevents tooth decay and improves your skin thanks to antioxidants. The research on these claims are in the preliminary stages, so there is no hard hitting evidence to prove these facts. Some brief research results (keep in mind that these are inconclusive): -Oolong tea blocked oxidation by 50% over 15 days. -Primary research suggests that oolong tea increases metabolism, burns fat and blocks fat absorption. But the extent is not yet clear. -Research says that this tea reduces cholesterol and increases plasma adiponectin levels which saves you from the epidemic of obesity. -When it comes to skin disease like eczema, a study reveals that if you drink one liter of oolong tea, your skin will show moderate improvement

after a month. -Another study claims that oolong tea prevents the formation of enzymes that cause ‘plaque’ on your teeth.

How to brew peppermint tea:

- Take fresh sprig of peppermint, use only the leaves and make them into small bits. - Let dry for 24 hours in the sun, making the leaves crispy. - In a vessel, bring the water to boil and add two tablespoons of peppermint tea. - Let it boil for 20 minutes and add a twig of fresh mint to the water. - Strain the leaves in a pot and add sugar to taste. Health benefits of peppermint tea: Don’t get flustered by peppermint tea, it simply means pudina tea, essentially tea brewed from pudina. This is herbal tea and peppermint has medicinal properties for an upset tummy, or so the claims suggest. A point to note, peppermint oil has been clinically tested and it has shown relaxation effects on gastrointestinal tissue. The tests also mention that peppermint oil builds immunity and is beneficial for cancer patients for its ‘chemopreventive potential’. Peppermint oil can also be used as an antioxidant, based on research.

How to brew Parsley tea:

- Boil the water and remove it from the heat - Chop some parsley leaves and add to the hot water. - Let steep in the water for 20 minutes. - Strain the water and you do not have to add sugar to it. - If you want to warm it up again, let it heat up but do not let it boil. Health Benefits of parsley tea: Parsley has two major properties: antioxidants and vitamin C.

Hence parsley can reduce free radicals giving you ageless skin and it can reduce inflammation that is a symptom for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. So far research hasn’t linked parsley tea to these health benefits. There is no way of asserting how much parsley tea is needed to reduce osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and skin damage.

How to brew Chamomile tea:

- In a pot, add Chamomile tea flowers and then

this tea increases amino acids that relieve muscle spasms. This could be the answer for fighting the common cold especially during the monsoon.

How to brew Matcha tea:

- The tea powder should be at room temperature. - In a bowl, add a teaspoon of matcha tea and add one fourth cup of hot water. - Whisk the tea and try to dissolve the matcha. One rule while whisking, move the whisk in a vertical direction without touching the bottom. - When it turns light green, it is ready to drink. Health benefits of Matcha tea: This is a Japanese tradition, where the monks used matcha tea to relax, but that’s not all. Believers claim that matcha tea is a good antioxidant, in fact - even as good as dark chocolate. -It is also believed that matcha has the ability to fight carcinogens or cancer causing cells. Matcha tea also claims to reduce bad cholesterol and weight loss. -It is also a detoxifying agent that is rich in fiber.

How to brew Rooibos tea:

add hot water. - Let steep for three minutes. - Strain the flowers and add honey or a few drops of lime juice. Health benefits of Chamomile tea: We may be aware that Chamomile tea has magical properties that relax and calm you. But did you know chamomile tea can reduce menstrual cramps and control your cold? However, researchers are still trying to determine these health benefits of chamomile tea. One research reveals that chamomile tea increases immunity of the body while the other says that

- In a pot add, Rooibos tea and then add hot water. - Let steep for three minutes. - Strain the flowers and add honey or a few drops of lime juice to it. Health benefits of Rooibos tea: Rooiboos tea is gaining popularity and is becoming a hot favourite with fitness enthusiast. The claims are almost alike with other teas; rooiboos tea also claims to slow down aging, builds immunity, relaxes the muscles, is excellent for skin ailments and reduces cramps. Apparently, red rooiboos tea is a good source for calcium,

therefore it strengthens your bones. Rooiboos tea can also reduce stress, something most of us need at the end of the day.

How to brew Hibiscus tea:

- Add the shoeflower or hibiscus to boiling water and add a cinnamon stick. If you want stronger flavour add the flower to the water but do not let it steep for more than 20 minutes. It will turn bitter. - Add honey and a few drops of lime to it. Health benefits of Hibiscus tea: What makes this tea different? Well, it is made from flowers and it’s a growing trend. When it comes to health benefits, there’s not much that separates this tea from the rest. This tea also claims to reduce blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and reduces sugar absorption in the body. How to brew Pu erh tea: There are two ways to brew this pu erh tea: The Western way and the Chinese way. The Western method involves the same steps as brewing hibiscus tea. While the Chinese method of brewing involves several steps from rinsing the leaves with hot water to steeping the leaves in a particular temperature. Healh benefits of Pu erh tea: In China, this is known as medicinal tea, but it is apparently a good hangover cure as well. Pu erh tea also claims to increase metabolism, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve digestion and detoxify the body.

How to brew Barley tea:

- You need roasted barley - Boil the water with the barley seeds. - Strain the water and add few drops of lime Health benefits of Barley tea: This will remind you of barley water, which is a refreshing drink in the summer. But in Japan, barley tea is called mugacho. The biggest difference is that this tea can improve the flow of the blood. Along with other health benefits, barley tea is an antioxidant and reduces tooth decay.

Spicy food and the explosive effect Low wages could lead to hypertension

Indians love their spices. But did you know that excessively spicy food can lead to all sorts of digestion issues? We spoke to Dr. S K Thakur, Gastroenterologist from Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi. He explains, "Spices are added to our food to improve the taste. However, once they reach the digestive tract they may cause irritation to the stomach's mucosal lining. Spices increase the acid secretion and reduce the strength of the gastritis mucosal barrier." "Overindulgence of spicy food may cause various stomach ailments. The

main reason behind these problems is the presence of high acidic content in spicy food. Although spices provide a number of vitamins and nutrients that are present in abundance, too much of these nutrients can be harmful too," he adds. Following are the ailments caused by extra spices in everyday food: Acid reflux: Spices are basically a combination of acids. When too much of these acids are introduced into the stomach, which already has its own acidic contents, it starts damaging the walls of the stomach. Acute gastritis: It is caused due to inflammation of the gastric mucosa, the membrane that lines the stomach. Many people suffer occasional, mild bouts of gastritis, which are often passed off as simple indigestion. Acute gastritis is generally characterized by symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, fever, diarrhea, headache accompanied by bleeding in vomiting or passed in the stool.

Gastric ulcer: Spicy food can cause ulcers in the sensitive mucosal lining or in the small intestine, called the duodenum (duodenal ulcer), or either in the esophagus (esophageal ulcer). Gastric ulcers are painful causing burning stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Insomnia: Spicy food raises the body temperature, which may trigger insomnia thus, it is advisable to avoid spicy food at dinner. Loss of appetite: Spicy food is safe for consumption when taken in moderate amounts. One may eat spicy food 3-4 times a week. Spicy food lovers should take care of the following: -Spices should only be taken in main meals -Avoid combination of fried oily and spicy food as it can increase acid secretion -Avoid having spicy food in late night meals -Drink milk in order to neutralize acid secreted by spicy food If you are experiencing digestion issues due to spicy food, then take antacids one hour after the meal and before bedtime.

How to motivate yourself to exercise at home Here are a few ways you can pep yourself up when you feel too bored or lazy to follow a fitness regime. If you thought working out at home is boring, monotonous and unexciting, give it a thought. While it might be pouring outside or you simply wake up late and miss out on your morning walk — working out at home is the best option. You just need to motivate and discipline yourself to exercise at home. Ways to motivate yourself Start with a new workout gear Working out at home doesn't mean you can simply wear your pyjamas and start exercising. This will make you feel more lethargic. Invest in a good pair of workout gear. Start with a comfortable pair of shorts, tops and shoes to boost your confidence. Play some peppy number Says Namita Jain, wellness expert, "Put on some good music before you start working out, preferably something latest that is on your mind. This will keep your spirits high and will help you to workout better." Get a fitness DVD When you are working out at home, you do not have a personal trainer to help you with your exercise. Thus get a fitness DVD — like a one for yoga, aerobics or some other dance form. It gives you a feeling of working out in a gym or a fitness studio and you do not feel like you are working out alone. Choose the right workout Working out at home also requires you to choose the right kind of workout that will keep you motivated to exercise. If you are the kind of person who gets bored walking on the treadmill or cycling at home, go in for pilates, yoga or zumba! Set up a routine Working out at home requires a lot of discipline. The best thing about exercising at home is that you can workout any time during the

day. Set yourself a time — are you more energetic in the mornings or do you like exercising after work? Spare yourself an hour every day and keep to it. You can also set a reminder on your mobile so that you do not miss out on your workout. Stock your fridge with healthy eats Says Samir Purohit, fitness expert, "Make sure that you keep only healthy edibles in your fridge. Store some juices, soya milk etc that will keep you motivated to workout." Hang a 'reach your goal' list Make sure you hang a note on your wall reminding you of the upcoming events that you need to exercise for — like a friend's wedding, reunion or a date. Put up pictures of your slimmer self Says Althea Shah, fitness expert, "Putting up pictures when you were fitter or slimmer will motivate you to workout." Find old pictures where you are wearing skinny jeans or pin up pictures of fitter celebrities on your fridge. Ask a friend to join you When you are working out at home, it tends to become very monotonous over a period of time. Call your best friend and ask him/ her to drop by at your place for a workout every morning or after working hours. This will keep you going and you will feel motivated to shed those extra kilos.

Workers earning the lowest wages have a higher risk of hypertension than those who receive handsome salaries, a new study suggests. The correlation between wages and hypertension was especially strong among women and persons between the ages of 25 to 44. "We were surprised that low wages were such a strong risk factor for two populations not typically associated with hypertension, which is more often linked with being older and male," J. Paul Leigh, senior author of the study and professor of public health sciences at UC Davis said. "Our outcome shows that women and younger employees working at the lowest pay scales should be screened regularly for hypertension as well," Leigh said. The study is believed to be the first to isolate the role of wages in hypertension, which occurs when the force of circulating blood against artery walls is too high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hypertension affects approximately 1 in 3 adults in the US and costs more than 90 billion dollars each year in health-

care services, medications and missed work days. It also is a (SES) and hypertension, determining the specific reason for that association has been difficult, according to Leigh. Other researchers have focused on factors such as occupation, job strain, education and insurance

coverage, with unclear results. Leigh's study was the first to focus on wages and hypertension. "By isolating a direct and fundamental aspect of work that people greatly value, we were able to shed light on the rela-

To be healthy, exercise with your pet!

Making your four-legged pal exercise can help him avoid health woes. A pet can also get you into shape, say experts. If you have been a couch potato so far, with little or no inclination to exercise, time you got yourself a four-legged pal. New research determines that children from dog-owning families exercise more than those without pooches. The American Journal of Public Health published a study saying kids with dogs spend an average of 325 minutes doing physical activity per day, 11 more than those without dogs. The same rule could apply for adults. It was also found that dogs can be very good motivators to get people moving. Fitness experts have their say: A study mentions how dog walkers meet cardio vascular exercise requirement at least thrice a week. "Though walking with the dog can be rejuvenating, it's not really a full-cardio workout. However, if you're running

with the dog it can reach the fat-burning range, which you need. What is advisable is to keep a heart rate monitor with you which shows if you are in the target heart rate zone," says fitness expert Althea Shah. What seems to be a distinct advantage of this outdoor workout is that while gym-goers exercise inside an air-conditioned gym, dog walkers are able to enjoy fresh air. Agrees Shah. "That would be true; you feel invigorated as it's the outdoors," she adds. A large difference between the gym and being outside is that for most people a gym workout starts to feel like a chore and dog-walking can be far more enjoyable. Says fitness expert Jivesh Shetty, "What happens is everybody doesn't have the same goals and passions, soon an 'X' amount of gym hours coupled with needing to eat correctly, becomes a strain. A pet can be a good start-up to the gym; they are playful so you don't realise the amount of time you spend

with them. It's also relaxing, a lot of workouts are stressful in the beginning, but being with a pet is like being with family. Plus, you can't always have a partner, or too many friends, so a dog can help. Evenings and early mornings give you a good hour of training. All said, in Mumbai there are only a few places where you can run with your dog. For building muscle, you need weight training." Avoid these woes: When pets gain flab, they increase the risk of developing arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, behavioral problems and cancer. Exercise is said to improve a dog's bone an joint health. 3 Ways to have fun with your pet 1) Play hide 'n' seek: Imagine you're playing throw and fetch but this time don't throw anything into the distance. Just show your pooch his or

her favorite toy. Hide it and tell him to go fetch it. 2) Follow your pace: Show your pet cat or dog or his favourite food or toy and then start walking with it. As he or she follows you, quicken the pace. 3) Create the 'dogstacle' course: Set up a realistic obstacle course made of empty boxers, small tubs and piled up pillows and make your dog jump over these. You can get creative and set up your own obstacle course alongside and have him play follow the leader.

The right way to cleanse your face

There is a right way to facial cleansing so your skin not only removes the dirt it accumulates but also helps keep clean Gone are the days when cleaning the face was just about splashing water and using a face wash. With so many new beauty techniques making it up for reads, and en number of drugstore products put to use for beautification, there's now a step-by-step to cleansing ones face. Here's a mini to-do list to washing your face just right.1. Take off your makeup: Yes, this is rule number one. Washing a caked up face does no good. Use a makeup remover, baby oil or an oil-based cream to take off that makeup from your face.2. Choosing the right product for your skin: It is important that you use the right products depending on your skin type. If you have normal

skin, you have the liberty to experiment with any product, but for a sensitive skin, use something that is gentle and does not bring about any breakouts. 3. Take time: Moisten your face with lukewarm wa-

ter (nothing too warm, or else it can make the skin dry and also harm the skin). Then use a cleanser that suits your skin type to clean the face. Take cleanser on your fingers and rub gently in a circular motion all over your face, going your way up and into the hairline and also down past your jawline.4. Wash it right: Washing the face more than once or twice can lead to irritation of the skin. If you're someone who sweats majorly, then maybe you can wash your face when you feel too much grime accumulation, also when you feel uncomfortable (then again don't overdo it). Even after a rigorous workout session, washing the face is recommended. Otherwise, no matter what skin type you be, stick to washing the face just twice, in the morning and before you sleep at night.
