Police has already accepted that three of the youth among the four were innocents and has nothing
to do with militancy. Then what stops government to lodge an FIR and punish the guilty, “she said. “I tried to reach out to the people of Shopian today but it is an unfortunate that I was stopped. Earlier the government used to put the separatists house arrest but that hospitality is being extended to me off and on who shows how the present government has failed completely,” she said according to KNS Re-

Conference leader and ex-MLA, Shiekh Mohammad Rafi. Curfew was re imposed in Shopian after the incident and the forces personnel were recalled to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, reacting to the fresh violent incident in Shopian, Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a complete shutdown in Kashmir and Chenab Valley on Thursday against the killing. Geelani appealed the people including traders, transporters and shopkeepers to observe complete strike against the killing and said that protest would be held on Friday whereas the future programme would be announced also on Friday. “I appeal people to observe strike on Thursday against the fresh killing of the civilian in Shopian.” Geelani said.

government. We can only express our sympathy with the suffering people and share their grief but the government hurdles our attempts which is shame for them,” she said. “Hundreds of youth has been killed during these five years but nothing has been done by the Omar government to punish the culprits. She alleged that youth are been targeted under a conspiracy that is been hatched by the government. Even Farooq Abdullah had said that there is no need for enquiry for Shopian killings. I think Farooq has acknowledged that these enquiries are not working. Let me tell you they use these enquiries’ to control anger only,” she added. Hitting out at chief minister Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba said, “Ever since Omar Abdullah became CM, our youth has become the soft target. The maximum killings since then are of youth and are innocent. CM is only making claims of solving the cases in hours but is not able to solve any one. Youth is feeling alienated in the present government and is being forced to pelt stones or take to arms. Lashing out at National conference she said, “They are responsible for all the mess and want to keep pot boiling to gain their political mileage. First they instigated violence in Srinagar and now extended it to rural areas. I am not expecting anything from the state government so I appeal the central government and union home minster that they should punish the culprits and shift the camp, A coeducation degree college is in its vicinity and it may result in further worsening the situation.” Pertinently on Tuesday Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti was detained when she was on way to south Kashmir’s Shopian town to express solidarity with the family members of youth killed by CRPF men last week.

The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also made a surprise visit to New Delhi on Tuesday where he met Congress General Secretary Ambika Soni besides sending his two emissaries Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar and Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani to Kargil where they succeeded to convince the party councilors to withdraw the claim.

the Prime Minister stated in his message. He highlighted the initiatives of the government which has banned sale of gutka in 33 states and UTs. The Prime Minister noted that we must move towards developing strategies for tobacco growers for their alternative livelihoods, as part of strategy towards a tobacco-free society. The Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad while addressing the gathering stated that India faces a unique challenge in its response to the tobacco burden. There are a myriad varieties of tobacco products, both smoking and smokeless forms which are widely used in India. Quoting the results of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (2009-10) he said, as per the survey, one in four or about 275 million Indians use tobacco in some form or the other. Of the nearly 35% of Indian adults, who are current tobacco users, 21% used smokeless tobacco products like gutkha, zarda and khaini, which are chewed orally. Nearly 9% smoked and nearly 5% smoked as well as used smokeless tobacco. The Health & Family Welfare Minister said that in sheer numbers, India has the highest number of smokeless tobacco users in the world and tobacco causes over 1 million deaths in India annually. Also, India has the highest number of oral cancer cases in the world and 90% of these cases are attributable to smokeless tobacco use. Ghulam Nabi Azad emphasized that India was one of the first countries to ratify the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Convention in February 2004. And, almost a year before that, at the national front, India had enacted and enforced its national tobacco control law – the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act in April 2003.The Health Minister said that the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) forms the cornerstone of the Government’s response to curb the threat of tobacco use and provides a conducive environment for the effective enforcement of the Indian tobacco control law. NTCP is currently operational in 42 districts of the country and Government of India is working on a road map to integrate both NPCDCS and NTCP in order to strengthen our response to the overall NCD burden being faced by the country. Highlighting India’s recent progress on prohibiting use, manufacture, sale and distribution of Gutkha in 33 out of the 35 States and Union Territories, Shri Azad said that this a further concrete step towards addressing the oral cancer burden in the country and a definite step towards
achieving Tobacco Endgame. Nearly 94% of India is covered under this ban and some States have extended the ban to cover other smokeless tobacco products under the landmark Food Safety and Standards Act, 2011, he mentioned. GhulamNabi Azad announced that former cricket captain of India, Mr. Rahul Dravid has agreed to being designated as the Health Ministry’s Ambassador for tobacco control. The popularity of this sport amongst Indians needs no elaboration with his advocacy, it will be able to catch the attention of a large number of sport loving people, both within the country and in the international diaspora, highlighting our tobacco control efforts around the world. A recorded message from Rahul Dravid who has been appointed as the brand ambassador for Tobacco control, was also played. Azad said that India is keenly observing global developments around strong and innovative tobacco control policy measures elsewhere, such as Plain packaging of tobacco products adopted by Australia and Current policy debates on tobacco free future generations and Endgame objectives adopted by Finland and Norway in their National health programmes. The Minister was hopeful that the deliberations of this Conference will provide a strong fillip to multi-sectoral engagement of governments, inter-governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and the private sector in strengthening tobacco control policies across the globe and aid in paving the path for a tobacco-free future generation. Highlighting the serious consequences of tobacco use, Dr. Margaret Chan, DG, WHO stated that ‘Tobacco is one product that we certainly do not need’. ‘The answer to tobacco should be NO’, she emphatically said. She commended the team effort done by the Ministry of Health and family Welfare under the leadership of the Azad in fighting the scourge of tobacco use. She cautioned t hat while the speculation on several ‘endgame strategies’ for preventing use of tobacco were being thought of through the world since many years, there has been severe resistance to prevention of its use by the tobacco product manufacturers, as these strategies threaten the existence of tobacco companies. Many endgame policies attack the supply side of this problem, she stated. She further said that it must be the people and the various community leaders and other stakeholders that must support the efforts of governments to put in place effective mechanisms for tobacco control. With right policies, governments would have the right solutions to the societal and commercials aspects of this issue which demand multi-sectoral solutions, Dr Chan said. She added that most of the endgame proposals r equire political will to implement the strategies. Dr. Chan said that most countries need a strong legislative and regulatory framework for this purpose, and also capacity building. She stated that ‘prevention is the best control’, and that while devising strategies to control tobacco use, governments must be ‘realistic’. The cultural context in which tobacco is used in smoke and smokes forms, creates powerful barriers to various prevention policies, she stated. She also said that governments must know what does commitment to ending use of tobacco in various forms means, in terms of the effects on society and economy of the country. KeshavDesiraju, Secretary, Health and family Welfare said that the challenge is to expand the discourse on controlling the use of tobacco. He noted that tobacco use continues to be the cause of the largest number of preventable deaths in the world. He also drew attention to the commendable policies of countries such as Australia, Finland and New Zealand which have made rapid strides towards controlling tobacco use. He stated that Butan has imposed a complete ban and the production and sale of tobacco products. The International Conference on Public Health Priorities in the 21st Century: The Endgame for Tobacco, is commemorating 10 years of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Indian tobacco control law – COTPA, simultaneously. The International Conference was attended by many senior officials of the Ministry, along with delegates from WHO and Public Health Foundation of India.
Soz..........
“If the central Government employees are retiring after 60 years why shouldn’t we implement it in the state? Government should review the service rules and sort out the matter with employee leaders amicably.” Prof. Soz told KNS. He added that all the agreements the state Government has reached with the EJAC, they should be implemented. Prof. Soz however suggested that the ‘strike politics’ should be stopped and people should not be subjected to in convince.

Most unwarranted and uncalled for
S
hocking to know that once again the CRPF personnel deployed at Gagren in Shopian have once again exhibited impatient and indiscipline attitude by resorting to firing and subsequently killing a pedestrian and injuring his wife. No doubt the unruly mob pelted stones on the camp and shouted anti-India slogans but this does not mean that the Central Reserve Police Force will resort to indiscriminate firing and once again plunging the whole area in a lot of trouble and inconvenience. Every mob which resorts to violent actions is not controlled by firing straight away and killing the people. There are several methods for mob control which have to be followed and if these methods do not succeed in dispersement of the mob, then only the firing option is exercised. In Shopian already the same camp has been blamed for killing four persons including three civilians as announced by J&K Police. After that incident the personnel of this camp and their officers should have been more cautious and should have directed their troops to exercise utmost restraint so that the occurrence of today’s incident would have been avoided. However that is not the case and the same personnel have once again indulged in yet one more gruesome killing. It will be in the fitness of things in the best interest of the state and the country to immediately remove the erring personnel from Gagren and if possible to shift the camp itself to some other location. As long as the camp is there, the trouble will continue as the presence of this camp will be a provocation for the locals. There is no doubt that CRPF has done good work in the past, but it does not give it a license to indulge in the incidents like Gagren. India is a democratic country and in this country everybody is answerable to the law. The authorities should immediately enquire the two incidents on fast track basis and punish the guilty. If incidents like this continue the peace process in the Kashmir valley will receive severe beatings. The people of the areas should also refrain from stone pelting and other provocative actions so that such incidents are avoided.

TEMPLE VEER BADRESHWAR AND IMPACT OF BUDHISM IN RAJOURI DISTRICT K.D Maini
Veer Badreshawar Temple is having a great historical importance. This is the oldest temple available in Rajouri District. The temple is located on the peak of mountain and is surrounded by thick forest belt. This sacred place is 66 kms on the southern side of Rajouri town and located exactly on the Line of Actual Control. The site is connected with motorable road and having a commanding view. The temple complex is presently looked after by army personnel as it is far away from the main Hindu basties. The devotees occasionally are visiting the Shrine. This important shrine is renowed for bells. Thousands of bells are erected in and around the temple. It is believed that by offering bells in the temple, Lord Shiva fulfills the wishes of the devotees. Presently, the Shivlinga is installed in the temple while the old idols have been preserved in a room alongside the main temple. There is a Asthan of a Peer also and the Muslim population of surrounding area call this place as Peer Padesar. The Muslim devotees also visits this Asthan and offer prayers. The temple is having very deep historical back-ground. As per the inscription found on the temple, it was built in Samvat 141 by the Emperor Kanishka of India when he was on the way to Kashmir to participate in 4th Budhist conference held at Sharda University which was located near Muzaffrabad. It is strange to note that the Kanishka who was having faith in Budhism had constructed this temple. On the other hand, during this period, the population of this area was having faith in Budhism and not in Hinduism. Therefore, the question of construction of Hindu Temple in Budhist zone by the Budhist Emperor does not arise. Furthermore, this temple has been constructed on a mound and Budhist Viharas are always constructed on the elevated sites while the temples are constructed in the basties.
J
This also indicates that in the ancient time, it was a Budh Vihara and not a temple which has been constructed by the Kanishka. Later on, this Vihara was changed from Budhist Shrine to Hindu temple. There is a deep Budhist back-ground in Rajouri area and there is a need of discussion on the impact of Budh4sm in the foot-hills of Panchal Range i.e. Rajouri area so that the full back-ground of this temple could be ascertained. Panchal Range is about240 k.m in length which starts from Kishtwar and goes upto Muzaffarabad, The foot-hills of this range comprises of snow capped peaks, slopes with thick belts of forests torrential nallahas and small valleys with attractive natural beauty. Its natural atmosphere and charming climate had attracted the noble people from ancient time. There is a reference in Mahabharata of panchal Naresh who was the father of Panchali (Duropti). One school of historian believes that Panchal Naresh was the first king of Pirpanchal Belt Initially the people living on the foot hills of panchal range (Drava Abasara) were the followers of Hinduism. But during the reign of Ashoka (273 B.C) Budhism spreaded in Kashmir and Kashmir become the centre of Budhist culture, consequently the people of Drava Abasara Poonch-Rajouri also came under the influence of Budhism. The habitants of Rajouri also accepted Budhism in this very period. Because the important entry and exit foot to valley were passing through this track Moreover, in this very period the foundation of Sharda School was laid on the bank of Madhumati river which falls on the last edge of Panchal range near Muzaffarabad. This Sharda School was later on converted into Sharda Peeth (university) for the research of Budhism. The fourth Budhist Council was also summoned in Sharda peeth during the reign of king Kanishka (72-161 B.C.). This Budhist University remained
a Research and Cultural Centre of Budhism for centuries together. But after the downfall of Budhism in Kashmir Sharda University was also deserted. Stein who translated Kalhan Rajtrangni in English had identified the exact location of this Budhist Cultural Centre in 1892. The foot hills of Panchal range (RajouriPoonch) again comes in lime light during the reign of Kanshka, who was believer of Budh-ism. Mr. Bapat wrote that after Ashoka the emperor Kanishka organised the Budhist counsel in Kashmir. This conference was held in Sarvastivada (Sharda) as stated above which was located on the last edge of Panchal range. 500 monks from all over world had taken part in proceedings under the Chairmanship of Vasumitra. There is a reference in the book "The History of India" written by R.K. Mukerjee and "2500 Years of Budhism" written by P. V. Bapat that King Kanshka had constructed a Tope (Budhist mound)with name of Kanishka Mahavihara. In this regard at present there is very interesting inscriptions on the wall of temple Veer Badhreshawar which is as under: The temple was built by the grate King Kanishka in 141 AD. Even at present the construction of this temple is exactly a Tope shape with certain changes. It appear that these changes have been done later on. Like the Buddhist monastery it is also build on the top of the hill. At present Shivling is installed in this temple recently but the original status and Idols have been kept in a building constructed nearby the temple which are not resembling with any deity of Hindu Devtas. It is fact that these idol could not been identified properly but these clearly indicates Buddhist style of art. These idol are similar to those found in Viharas of Kashmir constructed during Kanishka's time. The other important point is that Kanishka was a follower of Buddhism.
He constructed number of Budh Viharas. There is no historical reference of his construction of Hindu temple. Moreover, the population on the foot hills of panchal range was converted into Buddhism from the period of Ashoka. Therefore, the question of construction of a Hindu temple in the area which was dominated by the Buddhist population does not arise. It appears that Kanshka had constructed it as a Vihara but afterwards when Buddhism disappeared from this whole belt of Panchal range like other places and people again accepted Hinduism, with the change of faith they may have reshaped it as a temple but the old Idol of Kanishka's time having Buddhist style of art are still available in the temple. After the Huen Tsang period, there is no reference of Buddhism in the foot hills of Panchal range. It appears that with the emergence of Hindu-ism in the Northern India, the people of Rajouri had also reembrassed Hindu-ism. A inscription has been found recently near Swami Budha Amar Nath Temple Mandi in which main Budha Mantra "Om Mani Padmay Om" is engraved in Sharda language. Similar type of writings have also been noticed at Budh Khanari in Darhal block of Tehsil Thannamandi. All these facts indicate that in the ancient time Budhism was prevailing in the foothills of panchal range and it continued to flourish upto 6th century AD. In this very region the 4th council of Budhism was convened by king Kanshka. The great Indo-Greek, king Manandra conducted important discussion with renowned scholar Nagasena at Mendhar and constructed Menandra Vihara at the place of discussion in Mendhar valley and wrote a book "Milenda Penha" at this very place. It also appears that Kanshka had constructed a Vihara in Rajouri area near Peer Bedessar which was later on converted into a Hindu temple when Budhism disappears from this place. To be continued..........
Kashmiri Handicrafts
ammu and Kashmir is not only home to the vast cultural and ethnic diversity but also the heaven for arts and crafts that have been carefully nurtured for the centuries. A variety of motifs, techniques and crafts flourished in the land as the people from different regions and many skilled craftsmen decided to settle amidst its charming abundance of natural beauty. With time, these arts have gained even more distinctiveness and today Kashmir is known for woolen textiles, embroidered suits, Kashmir silk saris, papier mache, woodcarving, hand knotted carpets and lot of other traditional arts. CARPET Kashmiri carpets are world renowned for two things- they are handmade and they are always knotted, never tufted. The yarn used normally is silk, wool or silk and wool. Woolen carpets always have a cotton base while silk usually have cotton base. Sometimes however, if the base is also in silk then the cost increases proportionately. Occasionally, carpets are made on a cotton base, mainly of woolen pile with silk yarn used as highlights on certain motifs. The soothing blend of colors makes the Kashmiri carpet a prized possession. Carpet weaving in Kashmir was not originally indigenous but is thought to have come in by way of Persia. Till today most designs are distinctly Persian with local variations. One example, however, of a typical Kashmiri design is the tree of life. The colors of Kashmiri carpets are more subtle and muted than elsewhere in the country. The knotting of the carpet is the most important aspect, determining its durability and value, in addition to its design. Basically, the more knots per square inch, the greater its value and durability. Also there are single and double-knotted carpets. A single knotted carpet is fluffier and more resistant to touch. NAMDAS Far less expensive are these colorful floor coverings made from woolen and cotton fiber, which has been manually pressed into shape. Prices vary with the percentage of wool - a Namda containing 80% wool being more expensive than one containing 20% wool. Chain stitch embroidery in woolen
and cotton thread is worked on these rugs. PAPIER MACHE Besides at least three different grades of Papier Mache, there are some cheaper versions in cardboard or wood available too. To make Papier Mache, first paper is soaked in water till it disintegrates. It is then pounded, mixed with an adhesive solution, shaped over moulds, and allowed to dry and set before being painted and varnished. Paper that has been pounded to pulp has the smoothest finish in the final product. The designs painted on objects of Papier Mache are brightly colored. They vary in artistry and the choices of colors. Gold is used on most objects, either as the only color, or as the highlight for certain motifs, and besides the finish of the product, it is the quality of the gold used which determines the price. Pure Gold leaf, which has the unmistakable luster, is far more expensive than bronze dust or gold poster paint but also has much longer life and will never fade or tarnish. Varnish, which is applied to the finished product, imparts a high gloss and smoothness, which increases with every coat. Cardboard, usually indistinguishable from Papier Mache, gives slightly when pressed firmly. SHAWLS There are three fibers from which the Kashmiri shawls are made - Wool, Pashmina and Shahtoosh. Woolen shawls are the cheapest while the Shahtoosh are the most expensive ones. Woolen shawls are popular because of the embroidery work on them, which is a specialty to Kashmir. Many kinds of embroidery are worked on shawls- 'sozni' or needlework is generally done in a panel along the sides of the shawl. Motifs, usually abstract designs or stylized paisleys and flowers are worked in one or two, occasionally three colors, all subdued. Another type of needle embroidery is popularly known. This is done in broad panels on either side of the breadth of a shawl, or covering the entire surface of a shawl. Ari or hook embroidery; motifs are well-known flower design finely worked in concentric rings of chain stitch. Pashmina shawls are unmistakably soft and its yarn is spun from the hair of the ibex found at 14,000 ft above the sea level.
Although pure Pashmina is expensive, sometimes blending it with rabbit fur or with wool brings down the cost. Shahtoosh is the legendary 'ring shawl', renowned for its lightness, softness and warmth. The astronomical price it commands in the market is due to the scarcity of raw material. High in the plateaux of Tibet and the eastern part of Ladakh, at an altitude of above 5,000 meters, roam Pantholops Hodgosoni or Tibetan antelope. During grazing, a few strands of the downy hair from the throat are shed and it is these, which are painstakingly collected until there are enough for a shawl. Yarn is spun either from Shahtoosh alone, or with Pashmina to bring down the cost. In the case of pure Shahtoosh too, there are many qualities - the yarn can be spun so skillfully as to resemble a strand of silk. Not only are shawls made from such fine yarn extremely expensive, they can only be loosely woven and are too flimsy for embroidery to be done on them. Unlike woolen or Pashmina shawls, Shahtoosh is seldom dyed. Its natural color is mousy brown, and it is, at the most, sparsely embroidered. PHERANS This garment seems to be fusion of a coat and a cloak and is loose enough to admit the inevitable brazier of live coals, which is carried around in much the same way as a hot water bottle. Men's pherans are always made of tweed or coarse wool while women's pherans, somewhat more stylized, are most commonly made of raffel with splashes of ari or hook embroidery at the throat, cuffs and edges. The quality of embroidery and thickness of the raffel determines the price. BASKETS Willow rushes that grow profusely in marshes and lakes of Kashmir are used to make charmingly attractive objects such as shopping baskets, lampshades, tables and chairs and are generally inexpensive. To increase their life span, unvarnished products should be chiseled and frequently sprayed with water, particularly in hot, dry climates, to prevent them from being brittle. WALNUTWOOD Kashmir is the only part of India where the walnut tree grows. Its color, grains and inherent sheen are unique and unmistakable,
and the carving and fret work that is done on this wood is of a very superior quality. There are two types of walnut trees - the fruit bearing species whose wood is so well known, and one that bears no fruit and is locally known as 'zangul'. Zangul has none of the beauty of walnut wood, being much less strong and possessing no grain while the walnut wood is almost black and its grains are much more pronounced than the wood of the trunk, which is lighter in color. The branches have the lightest color, being almost blonde and have no noticeable grain. The intrinsic worth of the wood from each part of the tree differs that from the root being the most expensive and the branches having the lowest price. A cheaper product is liable to warp, or in case it is taken to warmer climes, will crack or shrink. Knots are usually concealed skillfully in the sawing, as it is difficult, though not impossible, to mask them while carving. Carving is the demonstration of the carver's skill, and walnut is eminently suitable for this, being one of the strongest varieties of wood. There are several varieties of carvingdeep carving usually with dragon or lotus flower motifs, two inches deep or more; shallow carving, half an inch deep done all over the flat surface; open or lattice work, usually depicting the Chinar motif; and most popularly, semi carving, which is a thin panel along the rim of a surface, with perhaps a Centre motif. The advantage of the semi-carving is that it allows the grain of wood to be displayed, together with the carver's skill. Naturally deep carving with all the skill and labor required is the most expensive. Copper and Silverware Shops in local market of the old city abound with objects of copper lining the walls, the floor and even the ceiling. One can see craftsmen engraving objects of household utility like samovars, bowls, plates and trays. There are floral, stylized, geometric, leaf and even calligraphic motifs that are engraved or embossed on copper, and occasionally silver, to cover the entire surface with intricate designs which are then oxidized. The work known as 'naqash' determines the price of the object, as does the weight.

Exercise keeps body and mind healthy
Exercise is not just good for physical health, but it can also boost our mental health, say experts. Now, a new study has explored psychosocial factors that may help to explain connection between physical activity and mental health.Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity - such as social relationships and mutual support among team members that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health. Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical
activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area. The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems. Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account. These results suggested that certain psychosocial factors - body

image and social interaction - may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work. "We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be
one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," said Monshouwer. Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.
Did you know that walking not only helps you to lose weight but also prevent diabetes and breast cancer? Read on to know the health benefits of walking. Walking is said to be a great exercise which has proven to be an excellent fat burner. If you walk at a steady pace for 30 to 45 minutes at least six days a week along with a healthy diet, you will gradually witness a change in your weight. There are several benefits of walking. Some of them are as follows-
Deep sleep turns on puberty
Slow-wave sleep or 'deep sleep' is intimately involved in the complex control of the onset of puberty, a new study has suggested. The many changes that occur in boys and girls during puberty are triggered by changes in the brain. Previous studies have shown that the parts of the brain that control puberty first become active during sleep, but the present
study shows that it is deep sleep, rather than sleep in general, that is associated with this activity. "If the parts of the brain that activate the reproductive system depend on deep sleep, then we need to be concerned that inadequate or disturbed sleep in children and young adolescents may interfere with normal pubertal maturation," Natalie Shaw, lead
researcher from Harvard, said. "This is particularly true for children who have been diagnosed with sleep disorders, but may also have more widespread implications as recent studies have found that most adolescents get less sleep than they require," she said. In the study, researchers examined pulses of luteinizing hormone (LH)
secretion in relation to specific sleep stages in children ages 9-15. LH is essential for reproduction and triggers ovulation in females and stimulates the production of testosterone in males. They found that the majority of LH pulses that occur after sleep are preceded by deep sleep suggesting that deep sleep is intimately involved in pubertal onset.
Walking regularly at a good speed improves your muscle strength and endurance and also helps build stamina. It is good for your heart. Walking is known to reduce your blood pressure, improve your blood circulation and all round cardio vascular functions. Walking is said to be good for your bones. It is a great way to strengthen your bones. Walking about 30 minutes a day increases your bone density and slows down bone loss in your legs. This low-impact exercise
is also said to target your spine, legs and hips. It promotes mental well-being. Known as a great stressbuster, if you walk outdoors, the combination of fresh air and exercise is an excellent way to boost your morale and mood. Helps prevent type 2 diabetes. Studies have revealed that walking approximately 150 minutes per week can reduce the risk of diabetes. Reduces the risk of colon and breast cancer. Last but not the least, walking is said to be safer than running.
Green benefits of fruits and veggies
Fruits and vegetables give you high nutrition and low calories. They have enormous therapeutic value with their rich nutritional composition, high fibre and water content and boost immunity, improve stamina and protect us from several health problems.Research shows diets containing substantial amounts of varied vegetables and fruits reduce chances of cancer by 20 per cent and of stroke and cardio vascular disease by 60 per cent.Helps in weight management Be-
ing low in calories and fat content and high in fibre, micronutrients and antioxidants with a high satiety value, they help in weight management. They work as fillers and can be treated as free foods with the exception of potatoes, sweet potatoes, jimikand and arbi, which must be used in moderation. Keeps BP in control Owing to their high potassium and low sodium content, intake of fruits and vegetables is recommended for BP patients.

Delhi gang-rape: quantum of punishment order for guilty reserved for Sept 13
The arguments on the sentence have ended. Now the sentence will be announced on Friday at 2.30pm. The four-- Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma—were declared guilty by the court on Tuesday of raping and murdering the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern on the basis of her dying declaration, forensic evidence, DNA samples, electronic evidence and the testimony of her friend and prime eye witness to the gory incident. Wednesday, public prosecutor Dayan Krishnan strongly presented the demand for death penalty before the court. He prayed before the court ‘show no mercy for merciless convicts’. It was a premeditated crime, which fell in "the rarest of the rare category", warranting "the death sentence, he argued. The men had used a metal rod and their hands to pull the woman's organs from her body after raping her, the prosecution said. Her injuries were so severe that she died in hospital two weeks after the attack. Judge Yogesh Khanna, who found the four guilty of "cold-blooded" murder, was hearing arguments from the pros-
ecution and defence on sentencing. The minimum sentence the men could receive is life in prison. Defence counsel appearing for Pawan Gupta, one of the convicted in the Dec 16 gang rape and murder case, pleaded for mercy citing his young age. Gupta, a fruit vendor, is 19 years old. Defence counsel also said the crime was committed on the spur of the moment and was not premeditated. Counsel opposed the prosecution's demand for death penalty for the convicted, and said life imprisonment may be given to Pawan instead of death. Pawan is "just 19 years old and there are chances of his reform", the advocate said. Arguing on the quantum of sentence in the case, the prosecution sought death penalty for the four men accused who were convicted for the gang rape and murder of the physiotherapist intern. Meanwhile, the court also rejected the defence lawyers' plea to issue contempt notice to home minister Sushilkumar Shinde for predicting death for convicts. The police had charged six persons in the incident. The case against one of
Shops selling Asaram merchandise may face tax scrutiny
Akola: Local tax authorities are likely to undertake scrutiny of the account books of as many as 23 shops in the district selling the products manufactured by the Ahmedabad-based ashram of selfstyled godman Asaram Bapu, an official said on Wednesday. “These shops merchandise the products manufactured in Ahmedabad-based ashram of Asaram and Yoga Vedant Samiti. We may scrutinise their books,” a sales tax officer said without elaborating. He also refused to come on record. According to sources, ownership of the five-acre-plot housing the ashram, located 9 kms away on Akola-Washim state highway, also appears dubious though no formal inquiry has been launched so far in this connection. The ownership of Asaram’s five-acre-plot housing the ashram, located 9 kms away on Akola-Washim state highway, also appears dubious, sources said. ‘Bapu ki Kutiya’, as the place is called, is a plush bungalow where Asaram, currently in jail on charge of sexually assaulting a minor girl in Jodhpur ashram, had reportedly stayed on at least six occasions in last nine years. Though it is said that Yoga Vedanta Samiti manages the ashram, none of its officials could be contacted despite repeated attempts.

We need freedom from babudom: CBI tells Supreme Court
Facing hurdles from the Centre on its way to attain autonomy, the CBI on Tuesday asserted in the Supreme Court that the agency needs to be freed from clutches of bureaucracy. It told the apex court that road blocks are still there on its way to attaining functional autonomy as the Centre was averse to vesting its Director with ex-officio powers of Secretary which would ensure independent working of the agency. “We (CBI) need freedom from babudom,” senior advocate Amrendra Sharan said while pointing out hurdles faced by the agency at evey stage in its administrative functioning. We need freedom from babudom: CBI tells Supreme Court When a bench headed by Justice RM Lodha asked why he was so much against the bureaucracy, he said “it is because everything which we are seeking is returned” and “every proposal passes through head clerks”. ers of Secretary for reporting directly to the Minister without having to go through the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), asked the Attorney General GE Vahanvati to make a categorical statement in this regard. The Attorney General told the bench that he can only make a statement after seeking instructions from the concerned authority as senior advocate Amarender Sharan, appearing for the CBI, submitted that the Centre was not agreeing to the agency’s proposal in this regard or for vesting the Director with the power to appoint Special Counsel. Sharan said there are other police forces in which the Director General has been vested with exofficio power of Secretary to the Government. The bench, which asked the Attorney General to come out with a stand on the two issues, also wanted to know from him whether any Bill was on the anvil to grant functional autonomy to CBI to insulate it from extraneous influences.
ashes by giving the appearance of disunity. An internal battle of intrigue that only Advani is capable of engineering may not do him or his backers any good, but it will certainly provide momentary comfort to the party’s enemies. Rajnath Singh, LK Advani and Narendra Modi in this file photo. AFP This does not mean Advani does not matter, or that his views on Modi are irrelevant due to the latter’s growing popularity. It is precisely when power can go to an incumbent’s head that he is in great need of saner counsel and advice. Advani can greatly strengthen both Modi and the BJP by not only backing him in this last stage before becoming the party’s mascot for the 2014 elections, but by offering to be there as a friendly advisor after that. A Modi with Advani’s backing would be infinitely wiser than a Modi with no one to go to for advice. Advani cannot do that if he chooses to play Shakuni. He has a choice between playing Shakuni, Bhishmapitamaha or even
Teachers' recruitment scam: SC sets Sept 23 deadline for Chautala to surrender
Convicted former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala's place is in jail and he cannot enjoy hospitality of the hospital, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said, rejecting his plea for extension of interim bail granted on medical grounds in the teachers' recruitment scam. The apex court, which took into account the report of the medical board of AIIMS that Chautala's "presence is not required in the hospital," said, "the moment big personalities are convicted, they spend more time in hospital than in prison" but when they are seated at the place of power they never say they will not take the power because they are suffering from highsounding diseases. While extending from September 17 to September 23, the time given to 78-year-old Chautala for surrender before jail authorities without failure, a bench of justices H L Dattu and S J Mukhopadhaya, said, "Today you are fit and your place is in a particular place. You stay there and take rest. You go and take medical treatment there. "Right from the beginning you are enjoying the hospitality at the hospital. At the end of the day there is an order of conviction against you. "For us status is nothing. He is a convict on interim bail. The medical board of a reputed hospital says his stay in the hospital is not required. The Delhi High Court has considered the report of medical board for not extending his interim bail," the bench said when senior advocate U U Lalit argued that Chautala's health condition
should be considered. The bench, which directed the jail authorities to "give proper, effective, efficient and expert medical assistance if required by Chautala", said there are so many convicts who remain in jail and suffer from ailments like him. "Otherwise, jails would be only for healthy people," it said. The judges were also perturbed over the Delhi High Court giving priority in hearing the appeal filed by the INLD chief, saying there are pending criminal appeals in the apex court and "people with death sentence are waiting for (disposal) of their appeals filed in 2005".The bench said, "Look at the system. Sometimes, I wonder of the system as to how many criminal cases involving death sentence are pending in the apex court. "What a poor man will feel? Does the system care only for well known personalities and well known people are given advantage?" The remarks referring to well known personalities came after Lalit submitted that "the High Court has been gracious to hear the appeal on priority basis" and now only the prosecution has to make its arguments. "We do not consider it gracious but today your appeal has got special treatment which is not permitted. It does not give a better name to the system. We are not able to take death reference case of 2005 which are pending (in apex court) and are in queue. Look at the tragedy," the bench said.
Curfew relaxed in Muzaffarnagar, clashes erupt in Baghpat
MUZAFFARNAGAR/LUCKNOW: With the situation showing improvement, curfew was relaxed for five hours on Wednesday in riot-hit Muzaffarnagar while Baghpat witnessed a communal clash, leaving a constable injured. District magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said the situation in Muzaffarnagar was under control and no untoward incident was reported during the day. “Curfew was relaxed relaxed from 12 noon till 4pm and later extended till 5pm in Kotwali, Civil Lines and Nai Mandi areas of the district,” IG (special task force) Ashish Gupta told reporters in Lucknow. Two communities clashed in Tirthal village in Baghpat during which stones were pelted at each other. A constable sustained head injuries, Gupta said. Strict vigil was being maintained during the relaxation period and police and paramilitary forces are on
high alert, Sharma said. The administration had imposed curfew in Kotwali, Civil Lines and Nai Mandi areas of the district on Saturday last following the communal flare up. On Tuesday, curfew was relaxed for two-and-a-half in these areas. 40 people have died in the clashes in various districts of western Uttar Pradesh. Besides 34 in Muzaffarnagar, two deaths have been reported from Meerut, one each have been reported from Hapur, Baghpat, Saharapur and Shamli. In Agra, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav alleged that some political parties were trying to take advantage of the situation in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas and stirring up trouble. “If we do not remain alert then such incidents will be repeated, because some people on whom the people of Uttar Pradesh did not trust will try to take advantage,” he said.
“We will not let this happen irrespective of the biggest sacrifice we need to make,” he added. Asked about remarks by UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav suspecting a political conspiracy behind the communal violence, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in Delhi, “I cannot say about political conspiracies till I get a complete report about the violence (in Muzaffarnagar). But political parties could indulge in it.” “80 companies (8,000 personnel) of paramilitary forces were deployed (in UP). Army was also deployed. Curfew has been relaxed now. Situation is improving,” the home minister said. UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had on Tuesday said, “The state government would deal strictly with all those who have tried to create communal chasm and vitiate the atmosphere of Muzaffarnagar and Uttar Pradesh.”
LS polls will be a referendum on leadership: Jaitley
Throwing strong hints that Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to declare Narendra Modi as its Prime Ministerial candidate soon, its senior leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said the coming Lok Sabha polls would be a “referendum on leadership” as the country had been “suffering hugely” due to leadership crisis under the United Progressive Alliance rule. Berating the UPA Government for its “indecisiveness”, and singling out Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for attack, the leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha said: “The elections will also be a leadership referendum when people are disillusioned with a leaderless situation.” Though he did not name the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr. Jaitley said: “When the principal opposition party, which has a proven leadership, throws up a pow-
Advani has a choice: He can either play statesman or spoiler
In June, Lal Krishna Advani got a wonderful chance to play elder statesman to the Bharatiya Janata Party — the party he built in the 1980s and 1990s. He flunked the test when he chose to play party pooper by staying away from the Goa meeting of the BJP national executive where Rajnath Singh anointed Narendra Modi as chief of the campaign committee. What should have been an invigorating moment for the BJP turned out to be an exercise in washing the party’s dirty linen in public, crowned by Advani’s famous leaked resignation letter which ranted against unnamed persons who were “concerned just with their personal agendas.” Presumably, that was an indirect attack on Modi. This month, Advani gets a second chance to play elder statesman and make amends for June as the party gets ready to announce Modi as its choice for the prime ministership if the BJP wins the next elections along with allies. Will he play spoiler again? Will he place the crown on Modi’s head himself or sulk in the shadows in the hope of undermining him at a later stage? The RSS and the BJP are apprehensive about Advani’s stand not because he is truly relevant to the party right now or because he can swing votes this way or that, but because no one wants a joyous ceremony to be reduced to

Krishna. One can empathise with Advani if he feels bitter about not getting the top job despite being the prime architect of the party’s rise to power. His chances died in 2004 when the BJP lost power by choosing the wrong allies, and, more importantly, by losing badly in Uttar Pradesh. He got one more shot at power in 2009, but five years of great economic growth ensured the UPA a second term in power – and Advani looked like a relic from the past. So, Advani can nurse some grievance against fate for passing him by, but he cannot pretend that Modi is the cause of his deprivation.
erful personality, the elections could become quasi-presidential in nature.” Delivering a lecture on “the current political situation in the country” organised
by the Aurobindo Cultural Society here, the BJP leader claimed that the “anti-incumbency is writ large on the wall” and the country was looking for a change.
Stating that the run-up for the elections had started, he said “the writing on the wall is clear....rest assure that we will announce very soon...We are fully conscious of that.” Holding that the UPA had no answer to the challenge posed by the BJP, he said all that it could do was to rely upon the ’dynastic leadership.’ “The UPA has no answer for this challenge. When the BJP has a proven leadership and from among them emerge a prominent personality, the Congress has only a dynasty to depend upon,” he said. He said “cynicism and despondency” had eroded the confidence that the nation had been enjoying as an emerging power before the UPA came to power. “The political situation in the country is now moving into a certain direction where the cynicism will be converted into hope”, Mr. Jaitley said.
Sushma Swaraj adopting double standards on crimes against women: Congress
All India Mahila Congress president Shobha Ojha on Wednesday accused Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj of adopting "double standards" on sexual crimes against women in the country. "There is a substantial rise of 38 per cent since June last year in gang-rape incidents in Madhya Pradesh, but Sushma is silent on them," alleged Ojha. She said Swaraj often raises a hue and cry when a crime against women takes place in non-BJP states but keeps mum when it occurs in a BJP-ruled state. Ojha, who arrived in the state capital for
the first time after assuming the charge of AIMC president, also slammed Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for re-
instating Cabinet minister Vijay Shah who had allegedly made "sexist" remarks against Chouhan's wife. "For the sake of power, Chouhan chose to become insensitive even to his wife which shows they (politicians) can do anything to remain glued to power," Ojha said. She alleged that incidents of crime against women in Madhya Pradesh have reached alarming proportions. On upcoming Assembly elections in the state, Ojha said a request will be made to party leadership to give ticket to at least one woman candidate per district in the state.
