No strike today Srinagar, August 15: Hurriyat Conference (G) Thursday reiterated that there won’t be any strike on Friday. Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar told KNS that the decision to call off strike was taken yesterday after some profreedom groups had appealed Syed Ali Shah Geelani to do so. “We appeal to the people to carry their normal activities on,” he said. Akbar also dismissed the rumours making rounds in Shopian district regarding strike on Friday.
Minor dies in a house collapse Jammu, August 15: A 6 year old girl dies and her mother is missing in a house collapse in Dudu-Seri in Udhampur District. Our correspondent reports that the house collapsed after it was hit by landslides the evening. Eight persons have been rescued from the debris of the house.
Missing school driver traced in Pulwama Srinagar August 15: Srinagar police traced the missing driver of a private school alongwith the school vehicle in Pulwama. The Principal of a private school situated at Baghat, Srinagar reported at the Police Station Sadder that a driver Naseer Ahmad Malik son of Abdul Gaffar resident of Old Barzulla attached with the school is missing alongwith the school vehicle, Bolero bearing registration number Jk03A/8352. Sadder police registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace the missing driver and the vehicle. Police traced the driver and the school vehicle in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
5 injured in road mishaps Srinagar August 15: Five persons were injured in different road accident across the valley. New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh today asserted there can be no place for narrow and sectarian ideologies in a modern, progressive and secular country. He said they divide the society and weaken democracy. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of historic Red Fort on the 67th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said there is need to strengthen those traditions of our country which teach us to promote tolerance and respect for thought processes different from ours. He appealed to all political parties, all sections of our society and the public at large to work in this direction. The Prime Minister said there is a need to build an environment of political stability, social cohesion and security for an India that is prosperous and where all its citizens will be equal partners in this, irrespective of their religion, caste, region or language. Dr. Singh expressed anguish over the loss of Navy's frontline submarine INS Sindhurakshak in an accident in Mumbai in which 18 soldiers are feared to have lost
their lives. On the issue of internal security, the Prime Minister said except a few incidents, the last nine years have been good for communal harmony. He said, the naxal violence in Chhattisgarh on May 25th was a frontal attack on the democracy. Dr. Singh exuded confidence that the country will be able to achieve the higher economic growth de-
spite recent slow down due to global recession. He pointed out that in the last nine years, country's economy has grown at an annual average of 7.9 per cent which is the highest in any decade so far. Pak violates ceasefire again 3 Army Jawans injured
Jammu, August 15: In yet another ceasefire violation by Pakistan in past five days, three Army jawans and a civilian got injured in Pakistani firing on forward posts along LoC in Balakote area of Poonch district today. Pak troops fired automatic weapons and mortar shells, one of which resulted in injury to a civilian Parvaiz in Sanjote forward area. Pakistan last night also attacked Indian forward posts in Mendhar sector of Poonch using small, medium, automatic and heavy weapons. The firing which start-
ed last night at about 9 pm continued for over two hours. Indian troops gave an effective response to Pak firing and silenced the Pak guns. According to a senior security officer, the 2003 Indo-Pak ceasefire has become meaningless as Pakistan is daily resorting to unprovoked firing on Indian forward posts as was witnessed before the 2003 truce between India and Pakistan. There have been 57 ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops from January 1 to August 5 this year, which is 80 per cent more than during the same period last year.

Complete shutdown was observed across the Valley on Thursday on the call of both factions of Hurriyat Conference, JKLF and other separatist organisations. According to KNS a large number of police and paramilitary CRPF men were deployed in Srinagar city and other parts of the valley to impose restrictions. In Srinagar city locals alleged that curfew like situation was imposed as forces didn’t allow them to venture out of their homes. Most of the roads and streets were barricaded by concertina wires to check pedestrian and vehicular movement. The situation was no different in uptown where the main government function was held at Bakshi Stadium. Strict arrangements were put in place in and around the stadium
where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unfurled the tricolor. Sources told KNS that special instruction were issued to the policemen and other forces to keep check on unregistered vehicles, private vehicles running in tinted glasses, two-wheelers to ensure that militants should not be able to breach the security ring. CCTVs were also installed inside the stadium while SSG personnel were monitoring the activities of the people with binoculars. Police and paramilitary CRPF personnel were deployed in strength in north Kashmir’s Sopore town to prevent any protests. Life was also paralyzed by the strike in south Kashmir districts of Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian and Pulwama. Director General Police Ashok Prasad told KNS that the official I-day functions passed of peacefully at all district headquarters across the state and there was no report of any untoward incident in any part of the state. Meanwhile, curfew was lifted in seven districts of Jam-
mu region on Thursday and situation was returning to normal. But curfew continued for the seventh consecutive day in Kishtwar district. Pertinently three persons had died and dozens others injured during communal violence in Kishtwar last Friday. The DGP said curfew has been lifted in every part of the Jammu region except from Kishtwar as there is still some kind of tension. “But we are monitoring the situation and as soon it becomes better we will lift the curfew from Kishtwar as well,” he said. Miscreants attack students for taking part in ID celebrations Baramulla, August 15: At least three school children and a driver was injured when agitated youth pelted stones on an State Road Transport Corporatiom bus carrying students from Government Middle School Uri in north Kashmir’s Khanpora area of Baramulla. The School Children were returning back to Uri after participating in India’s independence celebrations that were held at police lines Baramulla. Confirming the incident, Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir, J.P.Singh told CNS that scores of children from Government Middle School Uri had attended Independence Day celebrations that took place at Police lines Baramulla.
“After the celebrations were over, all the school children boarded an SRTC bus that came under attack near Khanpora Bridge. Youth resorted to stone pelting and injured three children including the driver of the bus,” Singh said adding that the more children would have been injured if the driver would have stopped the bus. DIG North Kashmir said that police have identified the stone pelters and hunt has been launched to trace them. Meanwhile, parents alleged that police did not bother to provide security cover to their children. “Police took pains to bring them to Barmaulla and left at the mercy of the God soon after the function was over,” one of the parents said.

He said that Kishtwar like clashes between two groups of Hindu and Muslims claimed 34 lives in UP, 13 in Maharashtra, 15 in Madhya Pradesh, 3 in Karnataka, 6 in Rajasthan, 5 in Gujarat in 2012 and again 8 in Maharashtra, one in MP, 2 in Rajasthan and 2 in Gujarat in 2013 besides some more deaths in Bihar recently. He asked these national leaders as to why they didn’t show any concern over these incidents, initiated debates in the Parliament and on TV channels, tried to rush to the spots, tweeted on Tweeter, wrote columns in newspapers and created hype. “This is the duplicity in your approach and this makes the difference. This is the why people of the Jammu and Kashmir think that they are different from rest of the Country. It is you who make them to think like this”, he told the particular category of national leaders and asked them to peep in their outlook. Asking these national leaders to bring change in their mind set, the Chief Minister said that integration between the people of the Country and the State cannot be achieved through provisions of law or Acts but when you show same concern and extend same treatment to the State which you do for rest of the Country. “You have to shun the separate approach towards Jammu and Kashmir, you have to shun the practice of treating Jammu and Kashmir differently, you have to measure the events through one yardstick and treat Jammu and Kashmir at par with rest of the Country then you can talk of integration of hearts and minds”, he asserted. “When you only debate in the Parliament on Kishtwar incident and show no concern regarding similar issues taking place regularly elsewhere in the Country, when you show your eagerness and enthusiasm to visit clash-hit areas in Kishtwar and no other places in the Country where such incidents take place, when you create hype on Tweeter and social media and speak vociferously in the Parliament and outside only on Kishtwar incident and not talk about similar incidents in the rest of the Country, then the people of Jammu and Kashmir think that they are different from rest of the Country”, he lamented on BJP’s approach exhibited towards Kishtwar incident and
said when this kind of mind set will change people of Jammu and Kashmir will not feel to be different from rest of the Country. “It is you who have to change”, he told them. Condemning the Kishtwar, Gool, Budgam, Banidipora and other incidents of violence, the Chief Minister said that rumours and hype regarding the unfortunate incidents fanned and propagated by peace inimical elements blew these out of proposition and tried to export violence to other parts. He said false photographs of the Kishtwar incident were circulated to exploit the sentiments of people. He said these photographs were found to be of Burma. He said these elements tried their best to put entire State in flames for their vested interests. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the common masses for showing maturity and not letting the situation to go out of control. “Your cooperation has helped us to bring the situation under control and foil the designs of anti-peace elements”, he said and sought unabated cooperation of people in maintaining peace and tranquillity and carrying forward process of development in the State. He said that people of the State are committed to the harmony, brotherhood and co-existence since ages and would continue to nurture this trait. He said enemies of the harmony have been defeated in the past and would be defeated in future also. Omar cautioned the people against rumour mongers and impressed upon them not to get carried away by rumours but ascertain truth and show wisdom while reacting to any event. On political issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister reiterated his stand that money or gun cannot solve the J&K-centric political issues but dialogue process is only way forward in this regard. “I am being time and again underlining K-issue as a political issue and driving home the necessity of dealing it politically”, he said and maintained that both internal and external dialogues were imperative to address the issues amicably. He said the external dimension of the issue needs to be settled with Pakistan and for addressing its internal dimension; the separatists should come forward for dialogue. The Chief Minister also expressed his serious concern over the tension at LOC and borders and on violation of ceasefire. He said exchange of fire from either side would not solve any issue. He said there is need of rebuilding the confidence between the two neighbours so that dialogue process takes place. The Chief Minister greeted the people on Independence Day and said that the development process set in by his Government all across the State would continue with firmness and commitment and thanked the people for their unabated support to him and his Government in his effort to restore peace and achieve the goal of prosperous and peaceful Jammu and Kashmir. Rather unfurls tricolour at Budgam Cautions against nefarious designs of communal forces Srinagar, August 15: Like other parts of the country, the 67th Independence Day was celebrated in district Budgam also with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. The main function was held at sports stadium where the Chief Guest, the Minister for Finance and Ladakh Affairs Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather unfurled the tricolour and took salute on the march past comprising contingents of CRPF, BR I, II and III, J&K Home Guard and students of 22 schools of Budgam district. . The District Development Commissioner Budgam Mr. Khursheed Ahmad, SSP Budgam Mr. Mohammad Irshad, a large number of people, senior citizens, political leaders, socio-religious workers and school children were present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the Finance Minister while recounting the supreme sacrifices offered by the great leaders to get freedom from the slavery of British rulers called for collective efforts to safeguard it. He cautioned the people against the communal and divisive forces, who are bend upon to disintegrate the society and
the country on the basis of religion, region, caste and creed. He called upon the people to contribute in safeguarding the hard-won freedom by thwarting their nefarious designs. He also saluted Army and Security Forces for guarding borders of the country to stop intrusion of the enemy and also lauded the J&K Police in maintaining peace and law and order in the state despite heavy odds adding that J&K Police is one of the best police forces in the country. The Finance Minister also deliberated on the landmark achievements registered in the country after Independence and said that many big strides have been made in every sector of life including science and Technology, Agriculture and Infrastructure Development. Maintaining that political freedom is incomplete without the economic Self-reliance, Mr. Rather said that India is making strides in socio-economic fields equally alongside the other progressive countries of the world and it is being seen with respect and regard by the forward countries at international level. He also referred to the Food Security Bill and said that the ordinance in this regard is awaiting the nod of Parliament. He said this new law envisages ensuring availability of food on cheapest rates to the eligible about 80 crore people of the country, which a landmark achievement is made by any country. While highlighting some of the achievements of the present government Mr. Rather said that tack-
ling un-employment has been given thrust and Employment and Counselling Centres have been set up in each district to guide the un-employed youth for getting dignified Self-employment avenues. “Voluntary Service Allowance (VSA) for un-employed youth and Seed Capital Fund Schemes to enable educated un-employed persons to start their income generating units have
been implemented” the Minister added. He said that the government has fulfilled almost all demands of the employees and their remaining grievances will also be redressed appropriately. On this occasion, a colourful and a scintillating culture programme was presented by the J&K Information Department and NYK artists which enthralled the audience.

Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din hoisted the national flag. The Minister inspected the parade and took salute at the march past. He said that the opposition has the right to oppose, but not to deviate the people from the path of peace, progress and prosperity and vitiate the conducive atmosphere. The Minister gave detailed account of the developmental activities in the State, saying that the government has launched various developmental projects and welfare schemes for ameliorating the socio-economic conditions of the people during last four and half years.

Communal forceswhere are they heading for?

f, Kishtwar riots are an eye opener for the govts. at centre & state, they are equally a big threat for the peace loving people of the state as divisive forces are openly inciting both communities for their petty political interests. The nonparticipation of a particular community in the meeting convened by the administration of Kishtwar for restoration of normalcy is indicative of the motives behind these riots. Why should a community abstain when the meeting was aimed to sort out the differences so that the normalcy returns and people start their usual work? Kishtwar, or for that matter, the whole Chenab valley , does not have a major role to play in the elections & installation of a particular govt, but it is being used to communalize the whole country so that political mileage is drawn and people are misled and their minds poisoned against each other. There has never been such a hue & cry on any such unfortunate incident and never has been Parliament disrupted and the whole media used for making a mountain out of a mole. Even when Gujarat was on fire & dozens of people were torched alive, no such uproar was witnessed. Whatever happened in Kishtwar was deplorable uncalled for, brutal & unfortunate and everybody needs to condemn it & do his bit to help in restoring normalcy in that area. How can a civilized society tolerate a handicapped being torched to death by a group of fanatics? But it does not mean that the community these fanatics belonged should be held responsible & punished. The elements who did it, should be brought to book & dealt under law. Now, a new study has explored psychosocial factors that may help to explain connection between physical activity and mental health.Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health.The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health.The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity - such as social relationships and mutual support among team members that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health. Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical
activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area. The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems. Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.These results suggested that certain psychosocial factors - body

INS Sindhurakshak: Divers struggle to find victims of blasts on submarine
NEW DELHI: Divers struggled in poor visibility inside an Indian navy submarine on Thursday to find 18 sailors who were inside the vessel when some of its weapons detonated and a fire swept through it as it lay berthed in a Mumbai base. There has been no sign of life from the Russian-built INS Sindhurakshak since it sank late on Tuesday following two big explosions. It was the biggest peacetime loss for the Indian navy since a war with Pakistan in 1971 and turned the spotlight on its ageing submarine fleet. The Defence Ministry said a large amount of seawater had entered the dieselpowered submarine, hampering visibility, while the damage caused by the explosion was blocking access to some areas. "Trapped personnel have not yet been sighted or recovered," the ministry said in a statement. The 16-year-old submarine, which had suffered an accident in 2010, had recently returned from Russia after a 2-1/2 year upgrade of its electronic warfare and inte-
grated weapons control systems. The explosions took place in the vessel's forward section, where its torpedoes and missiles are stored. While divers managed to pry open one of the hatches, the heat of the explosion had melted parts of the internal hull twisting the others, blocking access to different compartments, the Defence Ministry said. INS Sindhurakshak is a Kilo class vessel which were built in Soviet and later Russian shipyards for the Indian navy from 1985 to 2000. The navy has 10 of the submarines and four German HDW boats. Uday Bhaskar, a fellow at the national Maritime Foundation said the navy's fleet of conventional submarines was getting smaller by the day. India has not been able to buy new submarines nor build new ones, he said. "So we've been trying to make do with very old platforms," he said.
This week, though, the navy launched its first indigenously built aircraft carrier and activated the reactor on its first domestically built nuclear-propelled submarine. But both the carrier and the submarine have been decades in the making and will take several years before they are fully operational. Some experts argue that instead of building expensive aircraft carriers and trying to project power far beyond its shores, the navy should be focusing on its severely depleted underwater arm to counter the growing reach of the Chinese navy.
Pandey surrenders after court rejects his bail plea
After evading arrest for months, Additional Director General of Gujarat Police P.P. Pandey, who is wanted in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case surrendered before a special CBI court here on Tuesday. Mr. Pandey, who had appeared before the same court on a stretcher and then in a wheelchair, turned himself in after the Supreme Court on Monday rejected his anticipatory bail plea. The apex court asserted: “You were an absconder earlier also. Your conduct makes you disentitled to anticipatory bail.” Mr. Pandey was declared a proclaimed absconder by the trial court. However, he was not arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, but sent to judicial custody. On Wednesday, the court will decide on both the CBI’s plea for a 10-day remand for Mr. Pandey and the police officer’s application that he cannot be arrested without theState government’s permission as he was a serving officer. Mr. Pandey disappeared for the first time in April after the CBI included him in the list of seven police officers accused in the case. He was the Joint Commissioner (Crime) when Ishrat, 19, and three others were killed on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in 2004, allegedly by a police team that included Mr. Pandey. The police officers maintained that they had Intelligence Bureau (IB) inputs about Ishrat and others being Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists planning to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra

TDP leader Laljan Basha dies in road mishap; Chandrababu shocked
HYDERABAD: Former Member of Parliament S M Laljan Basha, who served as a prominent Muslim face of Telugu Desam Party for close to three decades, was killed in a road accident at Narketpalli on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway in the wee hours today. Basha (57) is survived by wife, a son and four daughters. Basha was on his way to his hometown Guntur when the SUV he was travelling in hit the road divider and turned turtle, killing him on the spot. The vehicle driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a private hospital for treatment, police said. A pal of gloom descended on the TDP as news of Basha's death broke out. Party leaders, soon after hoisting the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day, paid homage to the departed leader at the NTR Trust Bhavan here. Dikshit attacks BJP on power tariff issue, accuses it of misleading people Rejecting BJP's criticism on hike in power tariff, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday reminded the party of widespread protests due to long outages when it was ruling the city 15 years back and questioned its promise of cutting electricity rates by 30 per cent if it wins the Assembly polls. Delivering her Independence Day speech in New Delhi, she launched a scathing attack on BJP, accusing the party of trying to "mislead" the people on the power tariff issue to gain political mileage while insisting that the rates are much lower in Delhi compared to other metropolitan cities. "There used to be power cuts for more than 11 hours. There were riots on the streets because of long power cuts. The power situation is comfortable now because of reforms we initiated," Dikshit said after unfurling the national tricolour for the 15th consecutive time on I-Day.
