an being a social animal learns from the mistakes of history. Now, perhaps, the society including Media has started introspecting the impex of violence on the mindset of one generation born during the turbulent period. Everyday, one comes across some spinechilling incident or the other- whether youths committing suicide, pushing themselves to the dark gorge or drugs, brutally killing relations, friends for money or property. The rapidly growing criminalization in the society has left the old rather middle aged generation in lurch on this sordid state of affairs from where there is no way back to the same secular and Sufi culture of the valley, known for all over the world. Media, except for official media towards which no one ever paid any heed in that surcharge display of emotions and sentiments, suppose to be the fourth pillar of democracy, remained silent at a time when corrective measure could have helped a lot to set the plague right. But it missed chance due to various obvious reasons. The irrational following to extra political sloganeering by some disgruntled leaders, sanctified violence to such an extent that society today stands at such a cross road where there is nothing except darkness and a spineless, limping society with an ‘army’ of physically and mentally disabled, sallow faced youths in trance intoxicated with hype passions of escapism, cynicism, having bitter and passive attitude, with no spark in life to stride against the tides. The optimistic society with higher goals set can only strive hard and excel in world. What can a society attain where nearly two lakh youths including thousands of young women are in spate of drug addiction? The situation instead of improving is rather worsening with every passing day due to lack of proper health care facilities especially for psychological diseases. Very oftenly, government or system is blamed for these lacunas. But one has yet to come across a ‘self-destructive’ society like Kashmir which set ablaze temples of education, health care, government institutions meant for the welfare of the common masses with its own hands for speculative dreams of freedom. The Kashmiris known for hard work, honesty, hospitality and all other virtues are now labeled with passivity, corruption, drug smuggling, violence, crime and what not. How and when did the ‘work culture’ vanish from this land? Which are the factors responsible for this? The answers to these questions lie within ourselves provided we see and introspect the past happenings without rose-tainted glasses and with full honesty as what are the gains and losses of the past two decades’ struggle. Other than the civil society governmental institutions, rising above the political interests and brickerings, should solve the political and social issues with rationality and moderation. Let the society again epitomize honesty, love, passion, communal harmony, respect, honour and justice for all the communities living in this beautiful land with positive attitude towards life.

PAHARIES

The Daily

Gain or Loss of last two decades

Daily

K.D Maini Paharies are having very rich folk, Chann, Kanchi, Dholan, Doli and Saif-UlMalook are the prominent pahari folk songs. These songs depict the life and culture of Pahari people, Halgoza is the main musical instrument which is used by the young Paharies. It resembles with flute but the sound of the halgoza is more melodious than the flute. Jori i.e. a set of 2 halgozas used at a time is another musical instrument of Paharies. Apart from this, the Marasis (folk musicians) are using Shamai (a lightly changed form of shehnai) and Dholak and play the music on these instruments at the time of Marriages, Mundans, Khatnas and in Melas and other occasions which are celebrated by the Paharies. The main occupation of the Paharies is agriculture and allied services. They also prefer employment in belt forces. Due to the locational disadvantages, these people are economically back-ward. They posses small piece of land holdings, kacha houses and some cattle. Since their economy is dependent upon agriculture and most of the agricultural area is located on the slopes where irrigation facilities are not available. On the other hand due to snowfall only kharif crop is possible in their fields. Therefore, they cannot get proper benefit from their agricultural fields. On the other hand the employment avenues are so limited that skilled and unskilled Paharies are compelled to go to Punjab and Gulf countries in search of jobs. Growth centres are also not available in Pahari Basties. Therefore, the economic conditions of these tribes are not satisfactory and more than 55% Pahari population is living below poverty line. Government is trying its best to bring the Pahari people in the main-stream of development by providing incentives and subsidies. But due to non-availability of infrastructural facilities in Pahari Basties

T

and un-awareness among masses about the developmental schemes and programmes, the Paharies are notgetting full benefit of the incentives provided by the Government. The favourite dishes of Paharies are rice, meat, bread of maize, and cury. They present rice with milk and sugar to their guests. They also sacrifice a ram when they offer N1AZ at the time of harvesting of crops. The Pahari women wear silver ornaments like Jumka, Kangan, Hasieri (necklace), Long, Chhalla, Payal etc. While the men wear silver and golden rings. These ornaments are of typical type which are distinct from the ornaments of the other tribes residing in the same belt. Kabadi is the main indigenous game of Paharies which is played in the whole pahari belt. The lifting of Bughdar (stone lifting) is another game of Paharies which shows the power of young man. The Pahari gets amusement by conducting the fighting of bulls, buffaloes, rames and cocks. Bini (resting of arms) is another game of the Paharies which is played by two youths at a time. The games of these warrior tribes are unique and physical strength forms the core of these games Pahari dialect is their mother-tongue. This dialect has a deep historical background. It is the off-shoot of Shivrestine which is Upburnish of Nagri. Historical facts reveal that this language was introduced by the Budhist Writers in 2nd Century AD in Shardha University which was established by the Kanishka near Muzzfrabad to popularize Budh-ism in the mountainous belt. Lateron, when the Hindu Rajas again came into power, Sanskrit was reimposed in this belt and the language which was used by the Budhist monks for the development of Buddhism in this belt was uprooted. The development of this language was stopped and it became a oral language which was used only by the people residing in the mountaineer belt. With the

passage of time, the shape of this language remained changing and now this dialect has emerged as a language of the people residing in the mountaineer belt and so, it is called Pahari. Since it was the oral language and all the literature in this language was destroyed, therefore, for centuries together, the language was simply spoken by the people and it was un written dialect and with the passage of time, the words of neighbouring languages kept mixing with this language. This process continued for centuries. This is the main reason that after every 20 miles, Pahari dialect is found in slightly changed shape. No doubt that basically this is the one language spoken by the Paharies in whole pahari belt but due to the locational differences, this dialect varies from place to place and has it sub-names just as Poonchhi (spoken in Poonch belt) Chabali (spoken in Rajouri belt) Kagani (spoken in Karnah) Hindko (spoken in Uri and pahari basties in Kashmir), Mirpuri (spoken in Mirpur area) and Rambani (spoken in Ramban and GoolGulabgarh area). Generally speaking, it is off-shoot of Western Pahari which is the Indo-Aryan language and akin to Punjabi, Dogri, Gojri and Kashmiri. Paharies are the God fearing people. They used to offer prayers and believe in the sacred places. Shahdhara Sharief is the main shrine of attraction of Paharies. This shrine is located in Rajouri area after the name of a great Saint Say eed Ghulam Shah Bahadshah who died in 1806 AD. On the other hand, Ziarat Chhote Shah in Poonch, Ziarat Sain Allie Baksh in Mandi (Poonch), Ziarat Sain Ganji in Rajouri are the main Ziarats of pahari muslims where they visit and offer prayers. On the other hand, the important shrines of Hindu Paharies are Buddha Amar Nath in Mandi, Ramkund in Mendhar, Mangla Devi in Nowshera, Manma Mata in Kalakote, Veer Bhadreshwar in Rajouri

and Gurudwara Nagali Sahib Poonch and Gurudwara Chhati Padshahi Rajouri are the sacred places of pahari Sikhs. Due to locational disadvantages and nonavailability of infrastructural facilities in the Pahari basties i.e. in absence of road connectivity, power, water supply facilities, employment avenues, the pahari tribes remained economically backward for years together after Independence also. No doubt that Paharies were mentioned in the "NayaKashmir" document prepared by the National Conference before independence it was only after the return to power of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1975, that the Government started thinking for the development of Pahari people and establishment of separate identity of this sect so that their problems and needs could be solved and their aspirations could be fulfilled. In 1975, a Pahari Section was created in the Culture Academy for the development of Pahari language and cultural heritage of Paharies. Simultaneously, a movement was started by the prominent Paharies under the name of "Pahari Cultural Forum" in 1977 for the development of Pahari culture and to eradicate poverty and economic backwardness from the community. The main demand of Paharies was to declare them as schedule tribe so that they may be able to get avenues of progress and prosperity. In 1997, two Hostels for the Pahari speaking students were sanctioned by the Government so that the poor Pahari students of remote area could get quality education. These Hostels have been established at proper Rajouri and Poonch town. The scholarships to the Pahari students are also being provided as an in centre. The other demands like reservations etc. are also under consideration of the Government at various levels. (Concluded)

Important Animals of Indian Wildlife and Conservation

he illegal trade in wildlife is a global issue. From animal parts, like tiger bones and musk glands to live reptiles, birds and ivory, poachers and smugglers illegally poach and traffic a variety of wild plant and animal species. The two major categories of traded items are live specimens of wildlife species and products from wildlife species. The wildlife products mostly traded illegally are musk, ivory, rhino horns, tiger and leopard skins and bones; snakes and monitor lizard skins; pet trade and feather for decoration; turtle for meat and soups and Tibetan antelope for shawls. Animals Involved In Wildlife Trade Tiger- The problem of tiger poaching has come into the limelight because of a number of seizures of tiger skins, bones and other body parts, which took place in different parts of the country. The problem is mainly on account of the high demand for tiger parts, which are used in oriental medicine. Elephant- Carving of ivory is a traditional cottage industry in South India. The spurt in prices of ivory has been mainly responsible for killing of elephant in India. It is alleged that poachers do not hesitate to shoot even young elephants down to 5 years of age, which carry tusks of about 2.5 Kg. a piece only. This type of systematic and sustained poaching of tuskers appeared to affect even the genetic potential and sex ratio of the species. Tibetan Antelope or Chiru – The famous Shahtoosh shawls are woven from the under wool of the animal which has to be killed in order to derive the wool. This animal is migratory and was once found in large numbers in summers in the northeastern corner of Ladakh. Their numbers have now come down to a few hundreds, though they are still found in large numbers in the Tibetan Plateau. Live Birds – Around 250 native species are trapped in India and are traded mainly for food, zoo, as pets medicine, black magic falconry and taxidermy. Millions of birds are caged for trade of which two thirds die during capture or during transportation.

Rhinoceros - This animal is now on the endangered list mainly due to trade in rhino horn. The horn fetches about 2,00,000 to 3,00,000 rupees in India and much more in the international market. Its meat, bones are also used for medicinal purposes. Rhino population in India faces threat of poaching because of the mythical properties attributes to its horn and its astronomical prices in the international market. As the economic incentive is provided by the prices of Rhino horn, large number of Rhinos are killed every year inspite of serious efforts on the part of the Government.

of biodiversity and where the prime objective of management is conservation of biodiversity. There are four categories of Protected Areas declare under Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. They are Sanctuaries, National, Parks, Conservation Reserves and Community Reserves. At the same time the private or community land having flora and fauna cultural values in proximity to Sanctuary, National Park or Conservation Reserve can be declared as Community Reserve. This is always done with the consent of local people. The Government has important schemes for management of protected areas which is in the form of assisting State Governments. E H A L H + Vit d supplements can reduce Bp 5

ZABARWAN TIMES Monday | 16 Sep. 2013

Vitamin D supplements could be as effective as some of the prescribed pill, when it comes to lowering blood pressure in patients diagnosed with hypertension, researchers say. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with high blood pressure, but until now there has been little scientific evidence that topping up levels of the vitamin in the blood makes a difference. A new study, presented at the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) meeting in London, sheds light on direct benefits from taking supplements for five months in win-

ter.

Sun exposure tops up natural levels more effectively than through diet, but northern European countries such as the UK only get sufficient levels of UV light for seven months a year. Nearly 90 per cent of the body’s supply of vitamin D comes from the action of sunlight on the skin. Researchers examined patients visit-

ing the Holstebro Hospital in Denmark, which is at the 56th Northern latitude - about the same latitude as Glasgow and Moscow). Altogether 112 patients taking part had their initial levels of vitamin D measured, and then they were given either Vitamin D or a placebo (dummy pill) for 20 weeks. 92 of the 112 patients were found to have low levels of vitamin D at the start of the study, the Daily Mail reported. The researchers discovered that those patients taking the vitamin D supplement of 75 mcg (correct) daily showed a considerable reduction in central systolic blood pressure, blood pressure measured near the heart. When compared to the placebo group, patients taking vitamin D had a lowered in systolic blood pressure of 6.8 mmHg, while diastolic blood pressure was reduced by 1.7mmHg. “Probably the majority of Europeans

have vitamin D deficiency, and many of these will also have high blood pressure,” study leader Dr Thomas Larsen said. “What our results suggest is that hypertensive patients can benefit from vitamin D supplementation if they have vitamin D insufficiency. “Vitamin D would not be a cure for hypertension in these patients, but it may help, especially in the winter months. However, it is important to stress, that this was a small study, and that larger studies are needed to provide solid evidence.” ESH Vice-President, Professor Anna Dominiczak of Glasgow University, said that till now, “there has been little evidence of benefit from vitamin D to patents with hypertension.” “The reduction in systolic blood pressure was quite significant - this is what powerful drugs do in trials. “This is an initial study, so it needs to be confirmed, but it is potentially interesting as part of an overall strategy for managing hypertension in patients with low levels of vitamin D,” Prof Dominiczak added.

How probiotic bacteria prevents bowel disorders Scientists have now decoded the biochemical mechanism that lies behind the protective effect of some lactic acid bacteria, which play a role in alleviating inflammation and thus protecting against intestinal diseases. In experiments with mice, the researchers succeeded in demonstrating that lactocepin - an enzyme produced by certain lactic acid bacteria - selectively degrades inflammatory mediators in diseased tissue. This new evidence might lead to new approaches for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. Yoghurt has been valued

for centuries for its healthpromoting effects.

These effects are thought to be mediated by the lactic

acid bacteria typically contained in yoghurt.

Evidence from recent scientific studies show that

some bacterial strains actually have a probiotic effect and can thus prevent disease. A team of biologists and nutrition scientists working with Prof. Dirk Haller from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) has now discovered the mechanisms at work behind this protective effect. In experiments with mice, the scientists observed that lactocepin - an enzyme produced from the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus paracasei - can selectively interrupt inflammatory processes. As the scientists observed, lactocepin degrades

5 eat right ways to a slim you Shedding the kilos involves developing a healthy eating regime. Here are tips on getting that right... Don’t miss meals

Have at least three meals or then four smaller ones at a certain time everyday. These should contain enough cereal, protein and vegetable and fruit. If you skip a meal not only do you lower the body’s metabolic rate but also tend over eat in the next one, which is harmful, state diet experts. Go for balance It’s wise to choose a

combination of vegetables, protein, grains, minerals, fruit as well as fish, which is high in omega 3 fats that help prevent heart disease. High fibre foods like beans and whole grains are filling and low in calories. It’s also recommended to have enough Vitamin C in the form of oranges or a lemon, everyday. Don’t overload... It’s said ‘we eat with our eyes’ therefore don’t pile food onto the plate. Experts stress that an easy start to eating right is to practice portion control. Using a smaller dinner plate is smart and won’t make you feel guilty. Just don’t overload it, though. Have more whole grains Doing away with refined grains is most impor-

tant when it comes to eating right and slimming down. The best sources of this are oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, bulgur (cracked wheat) and brown rice. Whole grains are said to have lower calories and they enhance one’s fiber intake, which can in turn reduce blood cholesterol levels, lower your risk of cardiovascular diseases and chances of developing obesity. Snack smarter The next time you’re pondering over what to have from a vending machine, do the right thing: walk away. Research points that snacking on chips or chocolates can hinder a diet like no other. Nutritionists advise having a healthy bite like a carrot stick or some dry fruit when you feel the munchies. A fruit is also a good option.

an egg a day keeps our heart fit Eggs may be even better for us than previously thought - with twice as many antioxidant properties as an apple, a new research has found. While eggs are well known to be an excellent source of proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, researchers at the University of Alberta recently discovered they also contain antioxidant properties, which helps in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Jianping Wu, Andreas Schieber and graduate students Chamila Nimalaratne and Daise Lopes-Lutz of the U of A Department of Agricultural Food and Nutritional Science examined

egg yolks produced by hens fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn. They found the yolks contained two amino acids, tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxidant properties.

After analyzing the properties, the researchers determined that two egg yolks in their raw state have almost twice as many antioxidant properties as an apple and about the same as half a serving (25

grams) of cranberries. However, when the eggs were fried or boiled, antioxidant properties were reduced by about half, and a little more than half if the eggs were cooked in a microwave. “It’s a big reduction but it still leaves eggs equal to apples in their antioxidant value,” said. The discovery of these two amino acids, while important, may only signify the beginning of finding antioxidant properties in egg yolks, said Wu, an associate professor of agricultural, food and nutritional science. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Food Chemistry.

City dwellers face double heart disease risk

Keep yourself hydrated in summer Nothing satisfies your thirst than a tall glass of water. So before you reach for that can of chilled beer, here are some facts you should know about hydrating yourself. The amount of fluids you need depends on your age, gender and level of physical activity. Remember that you will need even more fluids to stay hydrated in hot weather and when you are physically active. You will know that you are dehydrated when you spot one or more of these instances happening: 1. You start feeling thirsty 2. Your lips and mouth dry out 3. You have a dizzying headache 4. You feel faint 5. Your urine is thick and yellow 6. Your BP falls and heart rate increases However, those who insist that it is important to drink eight glasses of water each day might be wrong. Research shows that drinking less than eight glasses of water per day does not lead to negative health effects. The amount of water that a person needs to drink every day

messengers from the immune system, known as chemokines, in the diseased tissue. As a part of the “normal” immune response, chemokines are needed to guide defense cells to the source of the infection. In chronic intestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the otherwise highly effective defense mechanism against infectious agents is malfunctioning. Chemokines such as “IP10” then contribute to the tissue damage due to chronic inflammatory processes, preventing the tissue from healing.

exercise cuts dementia risk in seniors

Researchers, led by Jess Lambrechtsen, cardiologist at Svendborg Hospital in Denmark, spoke to 1,225 men and women aged 50 to 60 years, including 251 who lived in the centres of major Danish cities. Despite the fact that none of the participants showed any symptoms of heart disease, 43 per cent of the total had CAC, the Journal of Internal Medicine reports. The study also found that people who lived in city centres were 80 per cent more likely to develop CAC than those living in other areas and that males, older participants, diabetics and smokers also faced higher risks, according to a Svendborg statement. “Our study aimed to evaluate the association between living in a city centre, which is often used by researchers to indicate exposure to air pollution, and the presence of coronary artery calcification in men and women showing no other symptoms of heart disease,” explains Lambrechtsen. The participants were selected at random from a national government database of Danish adults, and 69 per cent agreed to take part and attend one of four regional hospitals in Southern Denmark. Three percent were excluded from the study because of previous heart problems, leaving 1,225 people who did not display any symptoms of heart disease. Of these, 47 per

Key findings included: CAC was more common in people living in city centres, rather than urban or rural areas - in men (69 per cent vs 56 per cent), women (42 per cent vs 30 per cent ), 50 year-olds (48 per cent vs 32 per cent) and 60 year-olds (61 per cent vs 53 per cent).

Higher maternal age predicst kids’ autism risk Researchers have shed light on the possible links between maternal age and autism. While much research has been done to identify potential genetic causes of autism, the new study led by Sven Sandin, of the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and King’s College London, suggests that non-heritable and environmental factors may also play a role in children’s risk for autism. The researchers compared the risk of autism in different groups of material age (under 20, 2429, 30-34, and 35+). They found that children of mothers older than 35 years had 30 percent increased risk for autism. Children of mothers under 20 had the lowest risk of developing autism. The association between advancing maternal age and risk for autism was stronger for male offspring and children diagnosed in more recent years. The analysis included 25,687 cases of autism spectrum disorder and over 8.6 million control subjects, drawn from the 16 epidemiological pa-

pers that fit inclusion criteria for the study as de-

fined by the investigators. The researchers identified and discussed several potential underlying causes of the association between maternal age and risk for autism such as increased occurrence of gene alteration

during the aging process and the effects of exposure to environmental toxins over time. “The study makes us confident there is an increased risk for autism associated with older maternal age, even though we do not know what the mechanism is. It has been observed in high quality studies from different countries, including the US,” Sandin said. “All studies controlled for paternal age which is an independent risk factor for autism. This finding adds to the understanding that older age of the parents could have consequences to the health of their children,” Sandin added. The study has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

India A vs West Indies A: After Yuvraj Singh’s ton, Indian bowlers dominate

Gareth Bale scores on debut, but Real Madrid held to a draw Agencies

Yuvraj Singh slammed his 18th century in List A cricket while Yusuf Pathan hit a fiery 32-ball 70 not out to help India A post 312 for four. Agencies West Indies A were struggling on 177 for seven in 30 overs in reply to India A’s 312/4 in rain-hit 42-overs-a-side one-day match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Narsingh Deonarine top scored with 57 off 63 balls before becoming Rahul Sharma’s first wicket of the match. The best partnership for West Indies A came between Deonarine (26) and Andre Fletcher (29), who were involved in a 54-run stand off 53 balls before the latter fell to Yusuf Pathan in the 20th over. Vinay Kumar gave India their first wicket in his first over by removing N Krumah Bonner (16) and then got rid of skipper Kieran Powell (17) in his third after the West Indies side had fiery start. Soon after, pacer Sumit Narwal bagged his first wicket to leave West Indies A struggling at 58 for three in 10.5 overs. Earlier, skipper Yuvraj Singh hit 123

off 89 deliveries while Yusuf Pathan scored a quick-fire 70 not out off 32 balls with four fours and six maximums to propel hosts to a mammoth total. The pair was involved in 125-run stand off just 55 balls for the fourth wicket. Yuvraj, who scored 18th century in List A cricket, hit eight fours and seven sixes before falling to right-arm spinner Nkrumah Bonner in 40th over. The 31-year-old left-hander was though circumspect in the beginning as he took 39 balls to hit his first boundary and scored his fifty in 60 balls. But, in the next 20 balls he raced to his century as a torrent of fours and sixes followed from his blade as the visiting bowlers had no clue how to contain him. This was his first century in 2013 after 29 innnings in any format. His last hundred came for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh in Gwalior in December 2012 when he scored 131 - stats via Mohandas Menon.

Mandeep Singh, who came in at number three, scored 67 off 78 balls before being bowled by left-arm spinner Nikita Miller on the first ball of 31st over. Mandeep’s knock was laced with seven fours and one six as he and Yuvraj were involved in a 100-run stand for the third

Ban on S Sreesanth against principles of natural justice, says lawyer Agencies Sreesanth was banned for life by the BCCI after being found guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL in an internal inquiry conducted by the Board’s AntiCorruption and Security Unit chief Ravi Sawani. Calling the life ban imposed on S Sreesanth “bizarre”, his lawyer Rebecca John said the tainted pacer will challenge the BCCI’s decision in court as it is “completely against the principles of natural justice”. Sreesanth was banned for life by the BCCI after being found guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL in an internal inquiry conducted by the Board’s AntiCorruption and Security Unit chief Ravi Sawani. “The (BCCI) order is completely against the principles of natural justice,” John told ‘ESPNcricinfo’.“It has based its findings on personal interactions with members of Delhi Police as well as taken material from the chargesheet that has

been filed by the police before a sessions court. “If that is so then they should have waited for the court to determine whether or not any of this holds up in legal proceedings,” she pointed out. John described the Sawani report as “loose” and questioned the basis of its findings.“They just picked up conversations they had with members of Delhi Police where they said Sreesanth and other members of the cricketing community confessed before them. It is a very, very loose report with little or no substance in it,” John said. She asked how the evidence which wasn’t enough to keep the accused players in jail, could be considered proof of their guilt by the BCCI. Sreesanth, along with four other cricketers, is currently out on bail after spending quite a few days in jail. “The fact is that the sessions court has released players on bail and said none of this adds

Not only is it is excessive, it is completely contrary to all principles of natural justice,” she reasoned.

The Portugal star has finally put pen to paper on fresh terms at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, ending any lingering doubts as to his future at the club following months of speculation over the talks. Los Blancos have not yet disclosed any details of the contract, although reports in the Spanish media suggest the 28-year-old will become Spain’s highest-paid player with a net salary of 17 euros million per year, earning more than Lionel Messi and new teammate and record signing Gareth Bale. It was revealed on Saturday that Ronaldo was ready to sign a new five-year deal with Madrid, with club president Florentino Perez eager to keep his promise making the Portugal captain the highest-paid player in world football. Ronaldo is thought to be set to earn 50 percent more per year than Bale, who eclipsed the forward’s world-record transfer fee after his reported 100 million euro

Misbah elated at India opening Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq said Sunday he hoped India’s decision to allow local team Faisalabad to play on Indian soil will open up more cricket opportunities between the two nations. Misbah will lead Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 champions Faisalabad in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League starting in the Indian town of Mohali on Tuesday after New Delhi cleared the tour. India had stalled all bilateral cricket with Pakistan in the wake of 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai and -- with the exception of a short tour by Pakistan late last year -- there have been no signs of full series revival amid heightened tensions between the two countries. But Misbah said matches be-

tween the two cricket-obsessed nations should not be halted by politics. “I feel cricket must go on,” Misbah told AFP on phone from Harare, Zimbabwe. “Giving a Pakistani team clearance is a positive sign and I hope this will help open more doors for IndoPak cricket.” Pakistan humiliatingly lost the second Test in Harare on Saturday to level the two-match

move from Tottenham at the end of the summer. The news brings to an end a full year of speculation over Ronaldo’s commit-

ment to the Madrid cause, beginning with the revelations that he felt “sad” in the Spanish capital last autumn over a perceived lack of support from the club’s

series at 1-1. Misbah will join the rest of the Faisalabad squad in India later Sunday. Despite the tensions between India and Pakistan, Misbah said people on both sides of the border enjoy cricket. “It is a fact that people of both the countries enjoy IndoPak cricket and it is necessary for both the countries to have regular exchange of cricket tours because it minimises tensions and brings people together,” said Misbah. Misbah denied players would be scared by recent tensions, sparked by a string of recent clashes in the disputed Kashmir region.“When we play cricket, people forget everything,” he said. “We never expect and never fear any aggression. I am going to India with an open mind, with a message of friendship and peace, as always.”

hierarchy. Former side Manchester United was linked with a sensational move to bring the 2008 Ballon d’Or winner back to Old Trafford earlier this summer, four years after he was sold for a thenrecord fee of 94 million euros. But Ronaldo, who has 203 goals in as many games for Madrid, has always maintained a desire to stay at the club following Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment, with the Italian coach himself underlining his belief that the deal would go through. “Ronaldo wants to renew his contract and the club want him to renew. I don’t think it will be a problem,” Ancelotti said last month. A press conference to confirm the news has been scheduled for Sunday, with Perez set to lead the proceedings at the Bernabeu.

Villarreal goal. Villarreal were soon level. Lopez made another fine save, but could only direct the ball to Giovani Dos Santos, who scored with an angled shot into the far corner with 20 minutes remaining. There were chances at either end in the closing minutes, but although they had to cling on grimly in the closing minutes, perhaps Villarreal will be more disappointed with the draw.

Arsenal go back for £30m Rooney and hope Ozil presence will secure United target

Arsenal will test Manchester United’s resolve to keep Wayne Rooney in this January’s transfer window, with their spending ready to continue following their record £42million deal for Mesut Ozil.Arsenal still have funds to make a bid of about £30m and the feeling at the club is that the signing of Ozil has indicated to Rooney, who scored on his surprise return from injury in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, that they have returned to being serious title contenders. Ozil inspired Arsenal to a 3-1 win at Sunderland on Saturday, but they want to add a striker in January if possible and Rooney and Luis Suarez remain the two players that Wenger would like to add to the team. Former England star David Beckham has reportedly been voted as the world’s best footballer by a poll of UK fans. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player topped a star-studded list, which includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Gary Lineker, Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Steven Gerrard, after capturing 29% of the votes. According to the Daily Star, Portuguese star Ronaldo came second on the list with 14 percent votes, beating Argentine Messi, who came in third with twelve percent votes while Lineker was fourth in the poll, which was carried out by football toy firm Soccer Suckers. Meanwhile, late Northern Irish footballer George Best came in fifth in the list, followed by Brazilian legend Pele in the sixth position, England captain Steven Gerrard in the seventh and former England footballer Alan Shearer in the eight position. The report further said that Manchester United star Wayne Rooney occupied a low ninth position in the list, followed by former French star Zidane in the tenth position.

wicket. Indian openers started on a poor note losing Unmukt Chand (1) in the third over of the match before Robin Uthappa departed in the 12th over after scoring 23 off 37 balls with the help of two fours.

World record signing, Gareth Bale scored on his Real Madrid debut but could not stop his side from dropping two points on their visit to Villarreal. Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw. Bale may have been the centre of attention before the game kicked off Saturday, but it was Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez who was his side’s saviour in the first half with a series of spectacular saves to keep Madrid in the match, reports Xinhua. Lopez had already made three fine stops before Cani put Villarreal ahead with a low shot after 20 minutes and produced another fine double stop before Madrid began to show signs of life. Bale scored the debut goal that Madrid fans will have been dreaming about six minutes before the break, showing strength to get past his marker

to prod home Javier Carvajal’s low cross from the edge of the penalty area. But if Madrid went in level at the break it was thanks to Lopez who was returning to haunt his former club. The second half kicked off with Bale lashing a shot over the Villarreal bar before Jaume Costa let Madrid off the hook by sidefooting wide of an open goal. Villarreal may have just returned to the top flight from the Spanish second division, but they were looking the better side against a Madrid side that lacked cohesion in both midfield and defence. believe that Rooney will consider their bid seriously, even though he seemed to prefer to move to Chelsea in the summer, because they have now signed Germany playmaker Ozil.Neither Suarez nor Rooney will be easy to prise away, with United having proved resolute in their determination to keep Rooney, rejecting bids

from both Arsenal and Chelsea and Liverpool proving equally intransigent over Suarez, rejecting a bid of £40million, plus £1, from Arsenal.United are preparing to offer Rooney a new contract as his current deal runs out in 18 months, but have indicated that they will wait until January before opening talks. United need to

sign him on a longer-term deal before his market value dramatically decreases in the final year of his contract.Real Madrid are now expected to bid for Suarez in January and it is clear that Liverpool would prefer to sell him abroad and that the player would prefer a move to the Bernabeu. Rooney started Saturday’s game after his training-ground accident with Phil Jones that gashed his head, but his situation will continue to attract attention, especially with the launch of Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography next month. Rooney still strongly contends Sir Alex’s version of events at the end of last season, the former Manchester United manager claiming that Rooney asked to leave the club. United have confirmed that Rooney never submitted a formal transfer request.

Buttler leads England home to level series Agencies Jos Buttler added to his burgeoning reputation as the man to close out an innings by ensuring that the NatWest series went to the deciding match, as he guided England to a tense three-wicket victory with three balls to spare in Cardiff. On a surface where free-scoring was a rarity England struggled in their chase of 228, dented early on by Clint McKay’s hattrick, but just when the requirement was getting out of hand Buttler and Ben Stokes produced a strong argument as to why they have packed the batting order. Buttler had earlier been given out lbw on 8 but was saved by the DRS when it showed the ball sliding down the leg side. When the seventh-wicket pair joined forces England still needed 84 off 68 balls but overs 39 to 43 brought 40 runs as the equation started to favour the home side. Buttler eased the tension further by drilling James Faulkner into the River Taff and then brought up his half-century from 41 balls. However, when Stokes was bowled by McKay the job was not quite done for England, especially as

James Tredwell struggled to get the ball away. Buttler scrambled a single to take the strike for the final over (a direct hit would have found him short) then settled the contest in a grand manner with a huge six over midwicket off Mitchell Johnson, followed, two

balls later, by a fierce straight drive. Although Buttler has shown his class on the international stage before, this is the first time he has completed a run chase for England in his brief career, so it was an important tick for the coach, Ashley Giles. Stokes, while not as convincing, more than played his role in supporting Buttler as he continued in the No. 8 role earmarked for him since the match against Ireland. However, there were a couple of crucial moments Australia will look back on. When Stokes had 2, Aaron Finch could not hold into a tough chance at third man when he upper cut Johnson then, on 9, he was given not out to a huge appeal for a gloved hook which Hot Spot showed had made contact. Australia had burned their review much earlier against Eoin Morgan, when he was nowhere near edging it. Next ball, Stokes clipped Johnson for a boundary. After less than three overs of the chase, England had an uphill task to level the series, despite Australia being held to 227. McKay, a key member of Australia’s one-day bowling unit but someone who doesn’t always get the acclaim, took the fifth hat-trick by an Australian in ODIs and the 33rd overall.
