Srinagar, Nov 16: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday condemned the government decision placing Syed Ali Geelani under house arrest. However, National Conference (NC) supported the government decision saying that Geelani has been placed under house arrest for his provocative statements ‘instigating people to revolt against an elected government’. Talking to KNS, Naeem Akhter, PDP chief spokesman and MLC observed that placing the senior separatist leader under house confinement is ‘strongly condemnable’. “We demand he should be immediately released and should be

given a full political space to work.” Akhter maintained that the present dispensation is hell bent to bring shame to the democratic ethos of the country. “We are living in a democratic country and putting curbs on one’s movement is undemocratic. This government is bringing shame to democracy and democratic norms.” On the other hand, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, NC additional general secretary told KNS that administration must have taken the decision keeping in view the ground situation. “But let me tell you that what should you do when a person is hell bent to disturb law and order. Bharat Ratna conferred on Sachin Tendulkar Cricket Legend says goodbye to cricket Mumbai, November 16: Sachin Tendulkar struggled to hold back the tears as he soaked up the unconditional veneration of an Indian crowd for the last time when the sun set on the master batsman's glittering 24-year career today. After his side completed the formalities of an easy victory over West Indies, Tendulkar collected a stump as a memento and slowly made his way through a mobile guard of honour formed by his team mates, head bowed and struggling to hide his emotions. As television coverage broadcast images of a huge banner in the stands proclaiming "Legends Never Retire", the 40-year-old Tendulkar shook hands with opposing players and staff before climbing the stairs leading to the dressing room. Tendulkar later returned with his

wife Anjali, daughter Sara and son Arjun to make a moving and humble farewell speech at the presentation ceremony before completing a lap of honour on the shoulders of his team mates. "All my friends settle down, let me talk. I will get more and more emotional," he said, his voice almost drowned by chants of "Sachin, Sachin" reverberating around his hometown Wankhede Stadium. "It's getting little diffi-

cult to talk but I'll manage." A solemn Tendulkar spoke for more than 20 minutes as the 32,000-strong crowd listened intently with hands folded as if in prayer and eyes moist with tears. When contacted, the DGP told KNS that in view of the recent ‘inflammatory’ statements given by Geelani and the ground assessment of law and order situation, the administration took the decision. “We assessed the reports on rallies organized by Geelani in last few days in different parts of the Valley and came to conclusion that there is likelihood of law and order situation keeping in view the provocative speeches of the separatist leader. Mr Geelani incites people to go for revolt against an elected government. He is hitting everybody from right to left and the centre. He should understand that he belongs to a religion which believes in peace not violence which he propagates.” Kamal said: “I want to ask Mr Geelani that what is his contribution except for inciting people, instigating them to go for violence? He is crossing limits. “ When asked why the government hesitates in providing a free political space to Geelani under democratic norms, Kamal said: “We tried that experiment also but what did he do. He said Gun is an option. He justified stone pelting. So there is no option left but to allow the administration to take such decisions which are in tune with the ground situation.”

haired 16-year-old, Tendulkar finished his career as the sport's most prolific international run-scorer. He leaves the game after playing more test matches (200), scoring the most test (15,921) and one-day international (18,426) runs, and compiling more test (51) and one-day (49) hundreds than any other player in cricket history. EMOTIONAL SPEECH "My life's been 22 yards for 24 years. It's hard to believe that wonderful journey is coming to an end," he said, going on to thank his family, friends and all the people associated with his career. A perfect role model for the country's youth and the sport worldwide with his impeccable image on and off the field, Tendulkar offered a rare glimpse into his fiercely private family life through the speech. "The most beautiful thing happened to me in 1990 when I met my wife Anjali," Tendulkar said, addressing his wife as she wept uncontrollably. "I know Anjali being a doctor, there was a wonderful career in front of her. "When we decided to have a family, Anjali took the initiative to step back and say that 'you continue with your cricket and I will take responsibility of the family'. "Without that, I don't think I would have been able to play cricket freely and without any stress. "You are the best partnership I've had in my life." Such was India's dominance that Tendulkar was only required to bat once in his final test, scoring a stylish 74, but he did get to bowl a couple of overs on Saturday to at least play an active role in his last day of duty. BOWLING REPERTOIRE Responding to chants of "We want Sachin, We want Sachin" from the packed stadium, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni tossed the ball to Tendulkar, who delighted his home fans with a brief bowling cameo in his 200th test match. A crowd-pleasing wicket was not forthcoming but he did show off a full repertoire of deliveries, offering leg-

It said such an act was intolerable and condemnable in all respects,” reads the issued statement. Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has thanked all the Hurriyat leaders, scholars, Ulemas and people who participated in Ashura processions and maintained the age old tradition of sectarian bonhomie. APHC Chairman has condemned the imposition of ban on Ashura processions. “The way processions remained peaceful aptly depicts the government action was unprovoked. The government was trying hard to usurp the religious rights of Kashmiris.” Mirwaiz has also condemned the use of force against the mourners by police saying such draconian action would never succeed in breaking the will of people to pursue for the cause.

Paradoxical mentality

A

Sanskrit Shaloka says “God lives there, where women are worshiped”. All the religions give special status to women. From the very ancient civilization, women have been very important component of society in all the fields of life including the battle fields. But with the changing time, the respect for women diminished to such an extent that girl child is crushed in the very womb of mother before blooming. They are not allowed to see the light of the day. Killing of girls is not any new phenomenon. It dates back when girls were buried alive fearing that the birth of girl will lower down the prestige of the family one day. Even in this modern era, there is no change in this sick mentality. Now with the prenatal diagnostic technique gender identification is very easy which makes female foeticide to be done away with the help of doctors despite the fact that under Indian Penal Code it is a punishable at with imprisonment upto 10 years. Government is making all out efforts to curb female foeticide but the barbaric attitude cannot change the paradoxical mentality of the society. One just wonders people spent lacks of rupees on wedding of their son and are happy to have a girl as daughter in law. But when it comes to birth of a girl child, faces are made and even neomother is ill treated at a time when she requires the most care and attention. There had been many cases when women resorted to extreme step of committing suicide failing to produce a male child though scientifically it has been proved that it is the man who is responsible for the birth of a girl or boy but unfortunately for no fault of women she has to bear the brunt. Recent studies have shown that the sick mentality of gender discrimination has been found more in educated classes than the illiterates. One just fails to comprehend such complex and pseudo mentality. The educated community which is most vocal for the rights of women is involved in female foeticide when it comes to them. The reasons after such barbaric acts can be different including ego and worry of marriage of daughter or the fear of their safety and honour of family if something untowards happens with the girl. If these are the fears, female foeticide is no solution. They can be overcome by simple marriage system. It is encouraging that some of the NGO’s are working for low cost wedding ceremonies or younger generation favouring court marriages. Secondly if the girls have to achieve success, they ought to learn the tips self defence and retort vociferously against any atrocity against them. The society and the government machinery should join hands together to stop this regressive act. After all society is incomplete without women who happen to be our mothers, sisters, daughters and what not.

Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 was enacted in December 2007 to ensure need based maintenance for parents and senior citizens and their welfare. The Act, amongst other things, provides for maintenance of parents/ senior citizens by children/ relatives made obligatory and justiciable through Tribunals, revocation of transfer of property by senior citizens in case of negligence by relatives, penal provision for abandonment of senior citizens and protection of Life and Property of senior citizens etc. The Act comes into force in a State upon notification by the individual State/ UT Government. At present, the Act had been notified by 22 States and all UTs. The States which had notified the Act are also required to take further measures for effective implementation of the various provisions of the Act. These measures include framing of rules, appointing Maintenance Officer and constituting Maintenance and Appellate Tribunals etc. So far, nine States namely, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and West Bengal have taken all the necessary steps as mentioned above. Remaining States/ UTs are constantly being reminded by the Centre to take necessary action in this regard at the earliest. Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) The Ministry has been implementing a Central Sector Scheme “Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP)” since 1992. The Scheme aims at improving the quality of life of senior citizens by catering to their basic needs, particularly shelter, food and health care to the destitute elderly. On an average, about 35,000 beneficiaries are being covered every year under the Scheme.

Plastic bags- An environmental hazard I

ssues related to environmental hazards posed by plastic waste have been assessed by several committees. The problem created by the use of plastics bags is primarily due to shortcomings in the waste management system. Indiscriminate chemical additives pose environmental problems including choking open drains, ground water contamination, etc. Plastic itself is a chemically insert substance, used world –wide for packaging and is not per-se hazardous to health and environment. Recycling of plastic, if carried out as per approved procedures and guidelines, may not be an environmental or health hazard. What are Plastics? Plastics are polymers i.e. large molecules consisting of repeating units called monomers. In the case of plastic bags, the repeating units are ethylene. When ethylene molecules are polymerized to form polyethylene, they form long chains of carbon atoms in which each carbon is also bonded to two hydrogen atoms. What are plastic bags made of? Plastic bags are made from one of the three basic types of polymers polyethylene- High Density polyethylene (HDPE), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), or Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). Grocery bags are generally of HDPE, and bags from the dry cleaner are LDPE. The major difference between these materials is the degree of branching of the polymer chain. HDPE and LLDPE are composed of linear, unbranched chains, while LDPE chains are branched. Are plastics harmful to health? Plastics are not intrinsically toxic or harmful. But plastic carry bags are manufactured using organic and inorganic additives like colourants and pigments, plasticizers, antioxidants, stabilizers and metals. Colourants and pigments are industrial azodyes which are used to give bright colour to plastic carry bags. Some of these are carcinogenic and likely to contaminate food stuffs, if packed in

these carry bags. Heavy metals such as Cadmium contained in pigments can also reach out and prove to be a health hazard. Plasticizers are organic esters of low volatile nature. They can migrate to food stuffs as a result of leaching. Plasticizers are also carcinogenic. Antioxidants and Stabilizers are inorganic and organic chemicals to protect against thermal decomposition during manufacturing process. Toxic metals like cadmium and lead when used in manufacturing of plastic bags also leach out and contaminate the food stuffs. Cadmium when absorbed in the low

bags may contain certain chemicals, which can leach to the ground and contaminate soil and sub-soil water. Units not equipped with environmentally sound techniques for recycling may create environmental problems due to toxic fumes generated during reprocessing. Some of the plastic bags which contain leftover food or which get mixed up with other garbage are eaten by animals resulting in harmful effects. Because of the nonbiodegradable and impervious nature of plastics, if disposed in the soil, they could arrest the recharging of ground

Plastic bags if not disposed properly may find their way into the drainage system resulting into choking of drains, creating unhygienic environment and causing water borne diseases. Recycled/coloured plastic bags may contain certain chemicals, which can leach to the ground and contaminate soil and sub-soil water. doses can cause vomiting and heart enlargement. Lead exposure in long term may cause degeneration of brain tissues. Problems posed by Plastic Carry Bags Plastic bags if not disposed properly may find their way into the drainage system resulting into choking of drains, creating unhygienic environment and causing water borne diseases. Recycled /coloured plastic

water aquifers. Further, to improve the properties of plastic products and to inhibit degradation reactions, additives and plasticisers, fillers, flame retardants and pigments are generally used, these may have health impacts. S t r a t e g i e s f o r P l a s t i c s Wa s t e Management Many states have prescribed thicker bags. The inflow of plastic bags into the solid

waste stream would be substantiality reduced, as rag pickers would be keen to segregate the same for recycling purposes. Thin plastic bags have little value and their segregation is difficult. If the thickness of plastic bags is increased, it would make plastic bags expensive and check their usage. The plastic Manufacture Association could also be involved in the waste collection and disposal system using the principle of extended prouder responsibility. Littering of Plastic carry bags, water bottles, plastic pouches have been a challenge for municipal solid waste management. Many hilly States (Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, West Bengal) have banned use of plastic carry bags/bottles in tourist places. In Himachal Pradesh the State Government of has taken a cabinet decision to ban plastics in all over the State since 15.08.2009 under the HP non- biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1995. The Central Government too, has made assessment of the extent of damage caused to environment by plastic waste in the country by constituting Committees and a Task Force which studied the issue and made recommendations. The Ministry of Environment and Forests issued the Recycled Plastics Manufacture and Usage Rules 1999, and amended it in 2003 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 for regulating and managing plastic carry bags and containers. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified 10 standards on biodegradable plastics. Alternatives to Plastic The use of jute or cloth bag as alternatives to plastic paper bag should be popularized and prompted through fiscal incentives; however, it needs to be noted that paper bag involve cutting of trees and their use is limited. Ideally bio-degradable plastic bags alone should be used and research work is on to develop biodegradable plastics.

Cardio kickboxing

Remember the '80s, when every woman on the planet was hooked on to aerobics, as the universal form of working out? Then came the '90s and aerobic kickboxing (now known as cardio kickboxing) hit the fitness circuit. A sports-inspired form of aerobics, it pairs the cardio workout of traditional aerobics with the strength and agility training involved in martial arts. Using conventional heavy bags and training pads that are based on authentic kickboxing techniques, it provides both resistance and cardiovascular benefits. Most cardio kickboxing classes begin with light stretches and a cardio warm up. Typical routines include a series of repetitive punches, hand strikes and kick. And we can't think of a better way to incorporate self-defence moves in your workout.

Olympic lifting (Explosive lifts)

There's a warning that comes with this one. Not everyone's cup of tea, this is a highly advanced and complex movement exercise. Olympic lifts or explosive lifts should not be confused with powerlifting. The former recruits maximum use of muscle fiber in the entire body. The explosive movement helps co-ordinate the entire body to perform together. Says Ranjane, "They are excellent for joint stability and neuromuscular balance. It helps gain over all muscle mass." While you can get amazing benefits from doing explosive lifts, if done wrong, you have high chances of injury. Shetty warns, "Olympic lifts can improve your athletic ability greatly. Unfortunately, the drawback is that it comes with a tough learning curve. Also, they are notoriously hard to learn and master." But if you do execute them correctly, then you can reap their vast benefits.

Indoor wall climbing

Not every fitness routine is capable of giving you an adrenaline rush. So if thrill and excitement is what you're looking for in your workout, then indoor wall climbing is a great option for women. Says Ranjane, "Indoor wall climbing helps you practice balance, increases hand grip strength and challenges the mind and body co-ordination. It also improves kinesthetic awareness. It demands supreme energy and co-ordinates the entire body." Apart from giving you a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top, it also improves fitness while building trust and problem solving skills. If there ever was a challenging complete body workout that required co-ordination, endurance, strength, flexibility and balance, our vote would go to indoor wall climbing.

Walking lunges

"Walking lunges are an excellent workout for mobility of hip, knee and ankle joint," says Ranjane. An extremely beneficial exercise, it has been adopted by many athletes who are engaged in running sports like sprinting, hurdles, football, hockey etc. And why not, after all, it stresses joint mobility, strength, flexibility, core, and challenges the cardiovascular system. Mobility of the ankle, hip, and knee joints are required, to maintain perfect alignment, as well as maintain stability. All you have to do is walk around the room, but in a lunging action. To intensify this workout, you can use dumbbells and barbells.

The Asylum workout

Are you looking for a workout that will increase your stamina and strength? Then Body Attack is meant for you. It is a sportsinspired cardio workout that helps in building strength and stamina. This high-energy training exercise combines athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilisation exercises. Basically, it's high impact aerobics that is set to music! It will provide you a platform for achieving the highest personal levels of aerobic and anaerobic fitness. While at first it may seem hard to attempt, it's a safe workout for women of all ages and fitness levels.

Aqualates

If you're a water baby, you'll definitely enjoy Aqualates. This sports-specific aqua workout is aerobics in water that's based on the same anatomical guidelines and principles of Pilates, but in the resistive environment of a swimming pool. Designed specifically to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, aqualates is an ideal workout for those who suffer from pelvic, back, or other joint pain because the effects of gravity are reduced significantly in the water, thus making it a low-impact exercise. Apart from being a calorie-burning workout, Aqualates also enhances co-ordination, mobility, stability, endurance and balance.

Plyometric box jumps

"Plyometric training develops strength, power, balance, agility and kinesthetic awareness, all at the same time. It truly addresses many levels of athletic performance," says Jivesh Shetty, fitness expert. Try the plyometric box j u m p , a n e x e r cise, where you have to jump from the ground to an elevated surface (one to two feet off the floor). They are compound, multi-jump exercises, (training for explosive power movement), that are also practiced in sports like long jumps, pole vault and basketball. TIP: In order to perfect a box jump, you must develop agility, coordination, accuracy and balance. And you should perform them at challenging heights.

5 Fruits for a glowing skin We also know that a cup of fruit juice a day is sure to guarantee a clear complexion. How about a massage with a fruit pulp or a fruit facial? Fruit facials have been there for at least a decade now. But with people getting more wary of effect of chemicals on the skin, a majority of them are now resorting to using something from their own kitchen. What better way to pamper your skin than with pure stuff which is free of toxins and not harmful to your skin? Besides the fact that they hydrate and rejuvenate your skin, the very smell of a fruit on your face is quite de-stressing. Unlike the chemical beauty treatments, fruits are cost-effective, natural and also bring a visible difference. Here are a few fruits and their properties, choose what suits you best! Banana: This is one fruit that's abundantly available in India all through the year. We know it's a good source of iron, magnesium and potassium and helps reduce menstrual cramps. The effect of banana on skin too is not something that can be ignored. Bananas are rich in vitamin A, B and E and hence works as an anti-aging agent. A fresh mashed banana facial can do wonders for your skin. Lemon: Lemon juice is an important ingredient in most Indian recipes. This is also a fruit of all seasons and almost always finds place on your kitchen shelf or refrigerator. With its vitamin C content, its juice will keep your skin beautiful. A glass of warm water with a tsp of honey and a dash of lemon juice on an

empty stomach every morning is a great skin cleanser. With its astringent properties, it can be used to lighten the skin tone and also diminish acne scars. Rub the inside of a lemon peel on your elbow remove dark spots. Mix lemon and honey and use it as a natural bleach on your skin. Apple: An apple a day keeps the doctor away is cliched, but its health benefits are undisputable. Apple's antioxidant property prevents cell and tissue damage. Studies by nutritionists have shown that apples contain abundant amounts of elastin and collagen that help keep the skin young. Applying a mixture of mashed apple, honey, rose water and oatmeal can act as a great exfoliating mask on your skin. Orange: Rich in vitamin C that improves skin texture. Like apple, orange too contains collagen that slows skin aging

process. Rub the insides of orange on your skin to tighten the skin. Oranges can be dried and powdered and used as a natural scrub. Like lemon, oranges too help clear skin blemishes. Papaya: The benefits of this fruit on skin have perhaps been talked about since the time of our ancestors. Papaya is rich in antioxidants and contain a special enzyme called papain that can kill dead cells and cure skin impurities. A glass of papaya milk or just applying the flesh of papaya on your skin can do wonders to your skin. Mango: Rightly called the king of fruits for not just its taste but also for health benefits. The soft pulpy fruit has an amazing effect on skin too. Rich in vitamin-A and rich antioxidants, it fights against skin aging, regenerates skin cells and restores the elasticity of skin.

How to improve balance in older people Falling down and losing balance is one of the most common problems with old age. As age progresses, parents will complain of loss of balance and dizziness. Falls can lead to complications that in turn can lead to disability. Hence with the help of our fitness experts we build a good foundation based on exercise that build and strengthen your muscles. Here are some interesting exercises that will help you re-gain your footing. Strength and conditioning coach, Arnav Sarkar gives you a practical guide to boost your muscle groups. He explains, "With loss of activity the body starts losing strength, endurance and flexibility, and thus basic movements like walking become a challenge for some. The best way to combat this is to keep exercising and focus on working all the major muscle groups." He lists basic exercises to follow, "A basic exercise

that should be a staple would include squats, do half range or sit on a chair if normal full range is not possible. Besides do some lying hip extensions, light to moderate weight training, and of course do some stretching, cardiovascular activity like walking, climbing stairs to keep your body strong and not let things like balance become an issue for you." Jordyn Steig, our fitness guru, expert columnist and founder of Wellistic Wholeness, breaks down the facts further he says, "Fit people in general fall less often than those whose muscles are weak and joints are less mobile. Almost any exercise will enhance older people's agility and keep their muscles and bones stronger than they would be if they remain sedentary." Jordyn says, "The best way to remain light on ones feet and learn how to naturally react to being thrown off of our centers, which causes falling, is to engage

in exercise which destabilises the body. Destabilising the body simply means ensuring that whatever exercise one is doing, the body needs to stabilise itself rather than letting the floor or a fixed object like a bench or a stool hold our bodies still."He lets you in on his personal preference, "I tend to use an exercise ball to lie or sit on or a wobble board to stand on or hold straps (like the TRX Suspension Training System) to allow clients to pick one foot off the ground or stand on their tip-toes for every possible exercise during a workout. The basic effect is to require our core muscles to stabilise our body. When these methods are practiced regularly, I see a very quick change in a person's coordination and agility, as well as an increase in mobility in their joints. This decreases the chances of falling when one is slightly knocked off their centre and also makes a person, supple, fit, and strong."

Male circumcision cuts STD risk Leading paediatricians in the United States have said that the health benefits of circumcising baby boys outweigh the risks associated with the procedure. This may reignite debate on the controversial subject, which has pitted faith groups against opponents of religion who have described the operation as little more than genital mutilation. The American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) which had previously opposed the routine circumcision of newborns, said parents should decide and urged insurance companies to pay for it. "The benefits of newborn male circumcision justify access to this procedure for those families who choose it," the Independent quoted the academy a saying. The recommendation follows after research showed that circumcision reduces the chances of contracting sexually transmitted infections including HIV. And it is also claimed that the procedure

can lower the chance of urinary tract infections and penis cancer. It is estimated around 30,000 boys are circumcised each year in the UK. The procedure involves removing the tip of the penis reducing germs which growth underneath the foreskin. The AAP concluded that bleeding and infection as a result of the surgery were rare. But opponents argue that the foreskin is highly sensitive and plays a vital part in lubrication during sex.

Your face reveals all about your health Need a quick health check? Turn to the mirror to know what your face reveals about your health Your face is much more than the visage of your personality to the world. It's your best asset, your fortune, your primary outlet of nonverbal expression and with facial recognition softwares, it's your password as well. Or in Oscar Wilde's words; a man's face is his autobiography and a woman's, her work of fiction. But research has shown that your face is also a good barometer of your health and what's wrong with it. While facial diagnosis is not an absolute science, the condition of your skin speaks a lot about what's going on inside, both physically and emotionally. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners have for centuries used facial analysis as a diagnostic tool by matching facial areas and features with organs and emotional states. So the stubborn pimple that chooses to erupt on the same spot of your cheek is perhaps pointing at a graver health issue that needs attention. Here is how you can read your face to adopt a healthier lifestyle:

Forehead

Your vast forehead speaks for several organs such as the heart, the bladder and the small intestine network. So be prepared to flaunt all the wear and tear of excessive partying or your sleepless nights. A reddened, flaky complexion of your forehead could point to a digestive tract that's crying for some lubrication while conges-

tion hints at poor detoxification. But if you have got both, your digestive apparatus is screaming out to you. First off, go easy on the partying and make sleep a priority. Avoid oily foods and processed foods till you get the shine back.

Eyebrows

The window to your liver lies between the eyebrows. Expect too much alcohol and bingeing on other toxins to make their appearance here. Ancient Chinese medicine considers the liver to be directly linked with anger. So if you find yourself breaking into a tight scowl too often, you may want to cool off your anger issues. A stronger right brow says that you are more likely to express anger outwardly. However, a stronger left brow means that your tendency is to suppress your anger.

Mouth

This one's a no-brainer. Your mouth obviously correlates to your stomach. While the lips are linked to the stomach and intestine, the surrounding area at the sides that pass on to the

better.

jowls are connected to the colon. Spots or discolouration dotted around your lips could hence indicate poor bowel movements, bloating or even a poor appetite. This may also be a reminder to check for any food allergies that you may have never learnt of. Gums, if bloody, point to an acidic tummy, while dry, chapped lips mean dehydration. Cracks or sores in particular, call out for a spleen that's not cared for. Vitamin B and iron supplements may make matters

Cheeks

The mildest of rashes on your cheeks could indicate that your body is starved of oxygen as your cheeks are wired to your respiratory system. The solution is to make your breathing fuller and deeper by working out or doing yoga. If you smoke regularly, watch out for broken capillaries, discolouration, fine lines or congestion in this spot. Likewise for those down with cold or flu. If your redness aggravates easily, you may be overdoing your dose of stimulants such as coffee, colas and alcohol.

Chin

Your chin mirrors the kidneys and the bladder. Keep an eye out for any hormonal imbalance as it will show up here. Congestion around the chin point to your kidneys working overtime, most likely due to you putting yourself through extreme amounts of stress. Chin indicates adrenal fatigue. Heavy stress causes your adrenals that sit above the kidneys to release cortisol.

Modi's anointment as PM candidate unconstitutional: Vajpayee's niece Agencies Janjgir-Champa: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece Karuna Shukla on Saturday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party which it quit recently, saying anointment of Narendra Modi’s as its prime ministerial candidate was against the Constitution.“It is against the Constitution of our country. A prime minister or chief minister candidate is chosen respectively by elected Members of Parliament (MPs) or Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). I do not find it right,” Shukla said. It is against the laid down principles of the Constitution, she said. She also claimed that Modi will have no impact on the poll results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Delhi. She also claimed that Modi, who is campaigning aggressively in Assem-

bly elections, will have no impact on the poll results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Delhi.“States have there own prob-

lems and profiles. National problems are different from states. In states, workers have formed their own strategy to ensure victory. Modi will not have any effect in the election,” said

Shukla, a former national president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Shukla, also a former MP from Jangir-Champa parliamentary constituency, had last month quit the party over differences in BJP’s style of functioning in poll-bound Chhattisgarh. “I do politics based on values and principles, the same way I live my life. Self-esteem is very important. For last five years, certain things were going on in the BJP which I did not like. For which I decided to leave the party. I feel the BJP does not need me,” she said. She said she approached senior leaders on the situation in the state BJP but it did not help.“Later, I thought it was best for me to leave the party,” Shukla said. Though, the former BJP leader claimed she has been approached by many for campaigning against BJP but she has decided not to speak in favour or against any political party.

Sabarimala pilgrimage gets underway Agencies SABARIMALA: The holy hillock of Sabarimala has begun reverberating with the devotional chant of thousands of devotees as the two-month-long annual pilgrimage season of the Lord Ayyappa temple got underway on Saturday at the dawn of the auspicious month of ‘Vrishchikam’ in the Malayalam calendar. The first leg of the pilgrimage, the 41-day ‘Mandala’ phase, will be followed by the ‘Makaravilakku” festival lasting till mid-January next year, attracting pilgrims from different states and abroad. One of world’s largest

religious events, the shrine attracts every year an average of 30 million devotees, who trek up the hill from the foothills on the banks of the river Pampa. Apart from the temple management body Travancore Devaswom Board ( TDB), various government department and voluntary agencies like ‘Akhila Bharata Ayyappa Seva Sangham’ are engaged in efforts to ensure hassle-free inflow of pilgrims both at the ‘Sannidhanam’ atop and the base camp Pampa. Large contingents of police personnel had been deployed for security, crowd management and traffic control.

According to official sources, effective crowd management and keeping the fragile ecosystem in and around the forest shrine situated in the buffer zones of Periyar Tiger Reserve in Pathanamthitta district are some vital tasks ahead. The first leg of the pilgrimage will culminate with the ‘mandala’ poja on December 26. It will be followed by ‘makaravilakku’ with the ‘jyothi darshan’ as its highpoint on January 14. State devaswom minister V S Sivakumar was at Pampa recently to review the arrangements for the pilgrims, including logistics, health and sanitation.

Delhi poll: Arvind Kejriwal likely to file his nomination papers Agenceis: New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal is likely to file his nomination papers on Saturday for Delhi assembly elections. It’s the last day for nominations for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls. Some Congress and BJP candidates will also file their papers on Saturday. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as well as BJP CM hopeful Harsh Vardhan both filed had their nomination papers three days ago. Meanwhile, AAP on Friday completed its list of candidates for Delhi Assembly polls by announcing Dataram Bainsla as its nominee for Ghonda constituency. With this the party has announced candidates on all the 70 seats. Delhi poll: Arvind Kejriwal likely to file

his nomination papers today Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as well as BJP CM hopeful Harsh Vardhan both had filed their nomination papers three days ago. The AAP had on Thursday decided to pitch 63-year-old Ishrat Ali Ansari, a Supreme Court lawyer, against BJP’s Chief Ministerial nominee Harsh Vardhan and Congress’ VK Monga from Krishna Nagar seat. The party had faced problems finding a suitable candidate for Krishna Nagar constituency as it was looking for a formidable candidate against Vardhan and two of its selected candidates refused to contest elections from the seat.AAP had started the process of finalising names for the polls in April and had thought to finish the process within two months, but it took seven months to complete the process.

Fascist clouds loom over land: Manish Tewari Agencies NEW DELHI: Attacking the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi without naming him, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said Saturday “dark clouds of fascism” and “a great evil stalks” the land while referring to the expose about alleged state-sponsored stalking in Gujarat involving former minister Amit Shah. “As we go about upholding constitutional values and go about our chores, dark clouds of fascism loom ominously over the horizon, a great evil stalks our land,” he said at a seminar on the role of media in serving public interest. “The first casualty of the society would be the constriction of liberal space, curtailment of creativity and circumscribing the right to challenge convention and think off the beaten path.” “If the alleged expose about state-sponsored stalking is correct, I would be worried, not as a woman but as a civil libertarian about the Orwellian state that some esteemed gentlemen aim to create,” he said. He was referring to three key wings of Gujarat Police misusing their powers to stalk an unmarried young woman from Bangalore in 2009 under orders from then minister of state for home Amit Shah who did it for his “saheb”, say investigative websites Cobrapost and Gulail. “The entire surveillance-cum-phone interception operation by the state intelligence bureau, the crime branch and the Anti-Terrorist Squad was mounted in August 2009 on oral orders, without any valid legal authorization, and was meant only to serve the interests of someone whom the then minister of state for home, Amit Shah, addressed as ‘saheb,’” the report says.

Rajnath Singh advises Congress on dignified language Agencies RAIPUR: Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh on Saturday seemed extremely defensive on party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s ‘intemperate, malicious and sexist language’ at election meetings in Chhattisgarh but he parried all questions about them. At a press conference in Raipur, where he is on election campaign for the November 19 assembly polls, Singh began with an advice to the Congress that its leaders should use dignified language in politics. “Yesterday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said in Madhya Pradesh that BJP is day-dreaming. There are many other instances of Congress using undignified language”, he said. This sparked a volley of questions about BJP’s Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s ‘ Shehjade’ jibe at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi,

remarks about the health of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and observations like ‘ Khooni panja’ and ‘ Jalim

Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya inducted into Indian Navy Agencies Severodvinsk (Russia): The longdelayed and much-awaited USD 2.3 billion aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya was on Saturday inducted into the Indian Navy in a strategic boost to India’s maritime warfare capabilities. The mammoth 44,500-tonne warship was commissioned into the Indian Navy at the Sevmash Shipyard in this northern Arctic port at a handing over ceremony attended by Defence Minister AK Antony and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and senior government and naval officials of the two countries. The Russian flag on the vessel was lowered and the flag of the Indian Navy was raised in its place. In a traditional Indian ritual, a coconut was broken against the ship’s side. Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya inducted into Indian Navy The warship with a length of 284 metres will have MiG-29K naval combat aircraft along with Kamov 31 and Kamov 28. The commissioning papers were signed by deputy director of Russia’s arms exporter Rosoboronexport, Igor

Sevastyanov and the ship’s captain Suraj Berry, Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported. The warship was first scheduled to be delivered in 2008, but the deadline was repeatedly postponed over the period. The carrier will be escorted to India on a near two-month voyage by a group of warships to secure a safe sail to its base at Karwar on the Arabian Sea coast. INS Vikramaditya is a Kiev class aircraft carrier which was commissioned by Russian Navy in 1987 under the name Baku. It was later renamed as Admiral Gorshkov and last sailed in 1995 in Russia, before being

offered to India. The warship with a length of 284 metres will have MiG29K naval combat aircraft along with Kamov 31 and Kamov 28 anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance helicopters. The MiG 29-Ks would provide a significant boost to Indian Navy with their range of over 700 nautical miles, extendable to over 1,900 nautical miles with mid-air refuelling, and an array of weapons like antiship missiles, beyond visual range air-to-air missiles and guided bombs and rockets. After almost nine years of negotiations the initial USD 1.5 billion contract for retrofitting the carrier and buying 16 MiG-29K, K/UB deckbased fighters was signed in 2004. The aircraft carrier deal had become a major irritant in bilateral relations between India and Russia. By the end of 2007, when it became clear that Russia will not deliver the radically redesigned vessel by the 2008 deadline, ties dipped to an all-time low.

haath’ and other remarks during this election meetings in Chhattisgarh. Taken aback, the BJP president sought to wriggle out of the situation saying that “I have not come across such remarks and statements”. Singh also parried another question on Modi’s remarks, which the questioner described as sexist, that Congress was trying to bring Ajit Jogi through the backdoor like a parent presenting a good looking daughter before a prospective groom and later bringing their ‘ ugly looking’ daughter for solemnizing the marriage. “I have not read it. I can’t comment”, he added. Later, he did not respond to the question related to this issue.Asked whether Modi’s body language and statements were befitting to the stature of a person named as a candidate for prime ministership, Rajnath Singh shot back “ What is body language ?”. As far as statements are concerned, I have not gone though them, he added.

No question of implementing Kasturirangan report in haste: Chandy Agencies With the Centre’s decision to implement key suggestions of the Kasturirangan panel on Western Ghats conservation triggering protests in the State, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday said there was no question of implementing it in haste. There is no question of government implementing it in haste. No one will be evicted or prevented from pursuing their means of livelihood,” he said at the inauguration of the District ‘Chief Minister’s mass Contact programme’ in Kozhikode.Apparently referring to the violence that erupted in various parts of the district over the notification, he said the present notification should not be taken as the final word on the issue. “It is only a ‘draft’ and there is four months time to give suggestions on the report,” he said. As per the report, 123 villages in various districts have been identified as ecologically sensitive areas, he said, adding “many of us may have differences over villages that have identified under the ecologically sensitive category”. Noting that environment protection was required for all, he said it should be done without affecting people’s lives. Mr. Chandy said work on the ‘Japan drinking water project’ being imple-

mented in Kozhikode, was progressing fast and expected to be completed at the earliest. He said everyone had the right to protest but it should not be through violent means. The Centre’s decision to implement salient recommendations of the Kasturirangan panel on conservation of Western Ghats has sparked protests across Kerala, which has thousands of people living on the slopes of the biodiversity hot spot. A police vehicle was yesterday torched and government offices targeted in upland areas of Kozhikode district as violence marred protests by local resistance groups against Centre’s decision. Ruling Congress-led UDF and opposition LDF have voiced concern over the ‘unilateral’ decision to implement the key recommendations of the panel even as the Centre clarified that the direction it issued was not final. Police is maintaining tight vigil following the protests and a demonstration today by the LDF demanding the resignation of Mr. Chandy over the solar scam. Police has blocked the rally by the LDF to block entry points on two main roads, police said. Some 2100 police personnel have been deployed for security purpose in and around the venue and in the town.

said. The spot was about one km from Lilong police station.

Monetary demand could be reason behind the explosion as Salam is a businessman but no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the explosion so far, sources said. Udin was in serious condition at a hospital here, they said. Meanwhile, in another incident a powerful bomb (improvised explosive device) planted allegedly by militants exploded at the office of Tangkhul Katamnao (a social organization) in interior Ukhrul district bordering Myanmar last night damaging some portion of the office but no casualty was reported, police said. No individual or group has claimed responsibility.

He also said that the government has taken various steps to ensure transparency and curb corruption.“A number of steps have been taken for improving governance and curbing corruption and enhancing transparency and accountability in the work of public authorities. Singh highlighted the Right to Education, Food Security Bill and MNREGA as the UPA regime’s landmark achievements. “The Right to Information Act today entitles common citizen to get information about how a particular decision in the government has been taken,” said Singh.“The Right to Education has ensured that almost all the children get the benefit of primary education. The recent Food Security Act guarantees food security to 75 per cent of the rural and 50 per cent of the urban population. The MNREGA now reaches every fifth household in rural areas,” he said.On steps for development of tribals in the country, Singh said, “We have enacted a legislation to give ownership rights to our tribal brothers and sisters over land on which they have been living for centuries.“Recently, a high-level committee has been constituted to determine the exact socio-economic status of tribal communities. The findings of this committee will help us design better policies and programmes for these communities,” he added.

India jump to 2nd in Test rankings after 2-0 win over Windies India had started the series, which also brought the curtains down on Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious career, in third position and a 2-0 win has put them in second position. India jumped one place to second on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings table after winning the twoTest series against the West Indies 2-0 in Mumbai on Saturday. India had started the series, which also brought the curtains down on Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious career, in third position and a 2-0 win has put them in second position. This sets up an interesting two-Test series between number-one ranked South Africa and India to be played next month in Johannesburg and Durban. India

had needed to win the series against the West Indies to move up the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings table. India’s innings and 126 runs win in the second and final Test has helped them gain three ratings points to end at 119 ratings points, three ratings points ahead of England. In contrast, West Indies have retained their preseries sixth-rank but has dropped four ratings points to finish at 95. West Indies are now six ratings points behind fifth-ranked Australia and seven behind fourth-ranked Pakistan.Meanwhile, the ICC said the

Winning is what gets Sebastian Vettel`s heart racing Austin: Winning, more than setting records, is what sets Sebastian Vettel`s heart racing but Red Bull`s quadruple Formula One world champion plans to do both at the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday. The 26-year-old German will become the first driver since the championship started in 1950 to chalk up eight victories in a row in a single season if he wins at the Circuit of the Americas.“It`s a long weekend and I am not really here to break a record,” Vettel told reporters on Thursday.“It is a nice grand prix, a nice weekend and surely I wouldn`t mind if that turns out to be the case but it is not the reason I jump into the car.” Vettel won the previous race in Abu Dhabi by a massive margin to equal compatriot Michael Schumacher`s 2004 run of seven in a row and, with 11 victories to his credit in 2013, is also on course to equal Schmacher`s record 13 wins in a season.Last year when he arrived at the track carved spectacularly out of the south Texas scrublands for the inaugural race there, there was tension as the German and Ferrari`s Fernando Alonso took the battle for the title down to the final two races. This year, with the title long ago secured, a more relaxed Vettel seemed intent on enjoying his time in America where unlike most of the world he can walk the streets in relative anonymity. “Obviously it is different from last year where we had only two races to go and Austin was the last race before the final in Brazil,” he said.

qualification pathway for the inaugural World Test Championship, to be hosted by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2017, will be through the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings, with the qualifying period being from May 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016. The top four teams at the conclusion of the qualification period will qualify for the event in 2017. The results of any Test series ending after May 1, 2013 and the results of any Test series starting before December 31, 2016 will be included in the period that determine qualification for the ICC WTC.

Kallis set to make ODI return kallis is likely to make a return to South Africa’s one-day side after an absence of a year and eight months, in the upcoming series against Pakistan in South Africa. Kallis, who had made clear his intention to represent South Africa in the 2015 World Cup, last played an ODI in February 2012 against New Zealand. He was originally due to make a comeback to the ODI team against India, but when that series was curtailed from seven matches to just three, he instead will turn out against Pakistan for his return. The national selectors have yet to pick the squad but Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach, said Kallis should be “available to play the one-day series against Pakistan.” If he is, Kallis would probably be a straight swap for Faf du Plessis, who could be given the series off because of its timing.Du Plessis will wed his fiancee, Imari Visser, in Cape Town next Saturday, the day after the twomatch Twenty20 series he is to captain, ends, and a day before the three-match one-day series begins. Although both matches are in Cape Town, it is unlikely du Plessis will play the first ODI, but with no honeymoon booked as yet, he could return for the next two games. “We’re still in talks about my availability,” du Plessis said. “I’m not sure how its going to pan out at the moment.”AB de Villiers is one of du Plessis’ best men, but will be

available to play in the ODI series, although he may be rested from the T20s. Domingo indicated monitoring Villiers’ workload as a priority over the next few months because of the heavy burden he carries as ODI captain, being a senior batsman and the regular Test wicket-keeper.

It is not every day someone gets to play 150 Tests: Shivnarine

‘We’ve been taught a lesson’ - Sammy Darren Sammy has admitted that West Indies were exposed completely by the 2-0 defeat against India after three-day defeats in both Kolkata and Mumbai. Sammy admitted West Indies learned a “lesson” but said that his team was better than the result would indicate. “Yes, it’s very disappointing. We never turned up in the series,” Sammy said. “We left the Caribbean at the back of six Test victories, against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. Coming here really taught us a lesson, exposed us, taught us how far we are behind the top four teams in the world. We’ve just not turned up.” Sammy said West Indies were aware about how cricket would be secondary in the series that was Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell to cricket. But in the end they ended being too benevolent to India, Sammy felt. “I was speaking to a good friend of mine and he summed it up very well. He said we knew you were coming here to a celebration, and (hope) you got a lot of gifts. That’s what we did. Rohit making his debut Test series, gifts - two hundreds. Mohammed Shami making his debut, gifts - lots of wickets. We just didn’t turn up.“And I personally have been very disappointed, not just for me but for the team as well. It’s a good lesson for us, as we head down to New Zealand, for our next Test series, we’ve got to bounce back and come back strongly,” he said. However much honest Sammy can be, West Indies have a lot of areas to improve on. The maximum West Indies lasted across their four innings was 78 overs; In their second innings in Mumbai they failed to last even 50 overs. Only Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin managed to hit half-centuries. Kemar Roach’s shoulder injury at the outset of the series exposed the bowling completely as Tino Best, despite his honest toil, remained inconsistent and Rohit Sharma extracted maximum advantage of the Barbadian’s wayward bowling by picking easy runs.

Chanderpaul at Tuesday’s practice session in the Wankhede stadium, Mumbai. - Salman Ansari/DNA Only six players have played 150 or more Tests. West Indies batting mainstay for 19 years, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, will be the seventh player to reach this landmark on Thursday. The 39-year-old is excited like a teenager about this achievement, which coincides with Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th Test. “It is not every day someone gets to play 150 Tests. I am looking forward to it. Also, Sachin is playing his 200th Test, so it will be an honour to be a part of it,” said the Guyanese here on Tuesday, two days before the Test match. Chanderpaul does not mind his landmark appearance being overshadowed by Tendulkar’s 200th and farewell appearance. “It has been a privilege to be here to watch Sachin playing in his 200 Test match. We have watched him over the years, played against him, watching him from the other side. It is always a joy to look at him bat even though he is batting against us. There is so much to learn

from a legend like him. He is a master of batting, his art, his skills. Looking at him, you learn so much,” Chanderpaul said. alking more about Tendulkar, Chanderpaul recalled the tri-series in 1994-95 in India, also involving New Zealand. “In 1994 when we came here, he was out of nick in the beginning. He got some runs against New Zealand (115 at Vadodara). After that, we could not figure out where to bowl to him. Some guys were saying that sometimes we needed to bowl to him a little wide. But then the guys said he will hit them for four. If we bowl to him close, he will still hit them for four, so we could not work out where to bowl him. We just hoped he would get out somehow,” Chanderpaul recalled. Tendulkar’s sequence of scores in that tri-series read like this: 0, 0, 8, 115, 34, 62, 66, 54, 88, 105. Going by Chanderpaul’s form in recent years, don’t be surprised if he goes on to play 200 Tests and emulate Tendulkar. “I never thought I would get this far in the beginning but who knows where we can go if we keep persisting,” he said. Also, don’t even be surprised if Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine play for the West Indies together. The father-son duo played a first class fixture together for Guyana (against Trinidad and Tobago) early this year with the senior pro scoring a century in the second innings.

Live coaching from Sachin is Cheteshwar`s biggest gain: Father Mumbai: Arvind Pujara is a satisfied man that his son Cheteshwar`s prolific form in Test cricket continued with yet another century but even more proud that he was involved in a big partnership with Sachin Tendulkar in the maestro`s final match.“It is a proud moment for me that my son was involved in a significant partnership with Sachin on his last international appearance. This 148-run stand is something that Cheteshwar will treasure for his entire life,” a proud Pujara senior, who is also his son`s coach, told PTI over phone from his Rajkot residence. For Arvind, the biggest gain for his son from this match is “live coaching” from the master himself.“It was not an easy wicket to bat on. There was turn and bounce on offer while some deliveries were also keeping low. You needed someone to guide Cheteshwar, who is still new to Test cricket. And who better than the great man himself,” Pujara senior said.“Surely Sachin would have guided him on how to play on this kind of track. It was as if he got live coaching from Tendulkar in a match situation.

Ashes 2013-14: Joe Root content with England number six role England batsman Joe Root says he has no qualms with dropping to number six. The 22-year-old Yorkshireman began his Test career at number six in India last year but opened in all five 2013 Ashes Tests in England, making 180 at Lord’s. Hampshire left-hander Michael Carberry is set to open in Thursday’s first Test after playing in all three tour games. Root said: “I just love playing for England regardless of where it is in the line up. To get to put on the shirt and cap, that’s the main thing for me.”“We’ve learned England are some way off where they were three years ago when there were no problems and they went to Brisbane for the first Test knowing exactly what their team would be. “They have ticked off one or two issues but there is an injury to Matt Prior, they desperately need to have him fit. Michael Carberry opening the batting and Joe Root further down, is that the right decision or not? We’ll have to wait and see.“The big one is the reserve bowler who unfortunate-

ly has not really identified himself. Rankin, Finn and Tremlett have all had the opportunity to say ‘pick me’ but none of them have done that and whichever of those fast bowlers they do play it’s going to be a risk.” He scored 339 runs at an average of 37.66 opening in last summer’s Ashes - compared to his overall average of 40.15 from 11 matches - but only reached 30 in three of his 10 innings at the top of the order alongside captain Alastair Cook. Carberry, 33, has played only one Test, in Bangladesh in March 2010 when he made 30 and 34, but he made 78 in the opening tour match, added an unbeaten 153 in the next against Australia A and 50 in the final warm-up against a Cricket Australia Invitational XI. “He’s played exceptionally well on this whole tour so far he’s got some really good scores together and it’s really pleasing to see him take his chance,” said Root. Having seemingly decided on their batting order, England have to choose a third pace bowler to supplement

James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Chris Tremlett, 32, who took 17 wickets in three Tests on England’s last Ashes tour in 2010-11, captured one wicket in the first two tour games. Steven Finn, 24, who lost his place in the Test team after the first match of last summer’s series, has taken 11 wickets in two tour games, while uncapped former Ireland seamer Boyd Rankin, 29, has claimed seven in two matches. “The competition is very healthy at the moment,” said Root, after England’s seven-wicket win over the Invitational XI in Sydney. “It’s great to see both lads putting in strong cases. In a five-match series there could be injuries so if blokes put in good performances it gives them a lot of confidence if they get called up later. “Any win is going to put a lot of confidence in the side. Everyone has contributed really well in all departments. We are very happy as a camp.”
