NC alleges Mehbooba praised Modi Srinagar, August 18: Calling Chief Minister Omar Abdullah a ‘champion of people’s rights’ and a ‘harbinger of peace and prosperity’ to the state, the National Conference today said that it has again been proved by him while handling the sensitive situation in the wake of unfortunate Kishtwar incidents and in restoring peace and normalcy in the state. Lashing out at the opposition BJP and PDP for politicizing the Kishtawar issue for petty political gains, Tanvir Sadiq Political Secretary to Omar Abdullah, today said that this is in fact an

indication of their ‘frustration and desperation’. But the situation was saved by Omar Abdullah’s administrative and political leadership acumen which was eloquently on display throughout the whole crisis.” “He not only led these initiatives but instituted a non partisan all party

consensus on a need to evolve a mechanism that would contain riots,” he added. the fact is that Kashmiri people think so. Omar Abdullah might have his own thesis for claiming so. It is true that New Delhi should create such an atmosphere that people of Kashmir themselves feel that they are part of India,” he said. He said that it is true that there is deep alienation and people of Kashmir have negative feelings about India. “The report submitted by Interlocutors was not taken into consideration and there is a need that Government of India must engage Kashmiri separatists seriously so that the roots of alienation could be weed out,” he said. Senior Congress leader said that instead of harping that Kashmir is an integral part of India we should take some measure steps so that Kashmiri people feel that they are part of India. “There is a need to ponder over the fact that why people of Kashmir feel that they are not part of India. Such feelings arise only when there is something wrong on the ground. New Delhi must take steps to make Kashmiri people feel that they are part of the system,” Aiyar told CNS. Criticizing the role of Bajrang Dal, VHP and other Hindu fascist parties, Mani Shankar Aiyar said that all their efforts to disrupt peace in Kishtwar failed. “People of Jammu and Kashmir believe in harmony and amity and they showed to these communal forces that they are one and don’t believe in their dirty politics,” he said.

Even Sushma Swaraj had mentioned Mehbooba’s praise for Modi during her speech on the last day of the three-day 'Sadhbhavana' fast.” “It is proven beyond doubt that she thought of him as a role model and asked others to follow him. One shouldn’t have been surprised when she supported Arun Jaitley recently” he added. The political secretary said that “one can understand the frustration of PDP leadership for witnessing the success of the coalition government on the development front and progress on resolution of K-issue through dialogue and peaceful means as per the aspirations of people of the State, but one cannot comprehend PDP’s schizophrenic psyche of hate against the National Conference” Calling youth the future of a prosperous J&K state, Tanvir while congratulating the activist who joined NC said “National Conference under the dynamic leadership of Omar Abdullah is committed to ensure that youth are given an important and a positive role in shaping the state” Meanwhile, senior party leader and Minister for Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone while welcoming their joining, asked them to work closely to ensure polices and agenda of the party reach to the people. Compensation..........

Daily Victim Compensation Scheme is aimed at providing financial help to the victims of crime for their treatment, after-care and rehabilitation etc. While the Scheme provides for payment of compensation to the victims of crime, at the same time, it does not absolve an offender of his crime and he has to be tried in accordance with law. Thus the Scheme envisages assistance to the victims of various crimes in their treatment, rehabilitation; reduce the recurrence of crime in the society and take action against the perpetrators of the crime in accordance with the law so as to bring them to justice.

more callous than Indian forces. While stressing for immediate release of all political prisoners including youth, he said that substantial use of arbitrary powers and force are basic reason for uncertainty and political instability and instead of solving issues, make things more complicated. “In Shopian police ransacked residential houses and as public reported, a tear gas shell exploded in the house of Abdul Rasheed and caused a heavy damage to belongings and the religious literature. Local residents stated that though police was responsible for all this. However, instead of apologizing for their wrongdoings in contrast, police started a fresh arrest drive against youth and in retribution implicating sons of Abdul Ahad Para in fake and fabricated cases,” he alleged. “Police action has caused concern in Shopian town and civilians in the area are lamenting police for their highhandedness,” he added and expressed his concern over the series of arrests in Baramulla. “Police have launched a crackdown against youth and is hell-bent to tarnish the career and with the arrest their future becomes skeptical,” he said and warned authorities that this policy could in no way yield fruitful results. “In a civilized society every person has right to express opinion and no positive response and results can be expected while denying this or while resorting to suppressive measures by state authorities,” he said. The Hurriyat (G) chairman said that in the given situation, authorities should understand that reaction from the suppressed community is expected and incidents of stone pelting take place in the given context. “When birth rights of people are violated, the reaction in one form or the other is nothing new and is expected and Delhi and their local agencies should understand that policy of coercion cannot make people to surrender or compel to call off their struggle,” he said. Geelani while addressing the state police said that they should understand that Kashmir issue is a solid reality and as ‘compared to it the existence of police department is negligible’ “Even if every police personnel turns and acts as Qadir Ganderbali, they cannot change historical reality with regards to Kashmir issue. They are part of nation and society,” he said while commenting over the role played by state police and added that under all circumstances they are supposed to live within the society and with us. Geelani reiterated his demand and stressed for immediate release of arrested youth and added that Kashmir being a political issue and instead of using the force needs political measures for its peaceful solution.

espite tall claims of women empowerment, equal rights, no gender discrimination, total women emancipation, there is not much of difference in the overall condition of the most beautiful creature of God on earth. The fair sex still is becoming victim of mens’ cruelty in many ways. Whenever she tries to raise her voice against atrocities, she is silenced by using different methods of violence. The startling data compile by Jammu & Kashmir Crime Branch reveals over four thousand registered cases of crimes against women during the past two years including cases of cruelty at the hands of husbands. Rapes, gang rapes molestation, eve teasing, acid throwing if not succumbing to the dictates of men besides kidnapping and abduction have become very common in our society. This kind of heinous crimes were never prevalent in our society where rather women had equal status and were revered. With the introduction of new information technology world has taken the shape of a global society but at the same time it has formed scores of societies within one society with different values. Earlier all the societies had their own norms, ethos, ethics and values, least influenced by the culture followed by the other communities. But now the materialistic approach has shattered all the long cherished values to pieces. Individual liberty is prioritized over the interests of the society as a whole. The sociologists, psychiatrists and the government are taking aggressive and reformative steps to bring the society back on track, but now it seems to be too late. Perhaps it is happening due to anti-quated laws and mindset of the people which is constantly being intoxicated or influenced by the bad characteristics of the Open Society. May be in western countries, extra-marital relations are not a big issue and for them extra-marital affairs, bi-gamy or polygamy are no longer social taboos. Sociologists, being engrossed with other unprecedented social problems have perhaps forgotten this fast growing grave trend which is derooting and damaging the very social fabric. Women, whether literate or illiterate, knowing all the facts about the indulgement of their life partner, keep on suffering silently for fear of social stigma, for the dignity of the family and probably the upbringing from parents that husband’s house is her last abode, whether good or bad. If at all she knocks the doors of justice-after years’ long struggle, what will she achieve? In both the cases she will be axing her own feet. Consequently after suffering years together physically, mentally and emotionally, finding no support or her inability to share the agony with anybody else, she just becomes mess of flesh and bones due to her haplessness to prevent the life partner from such perversive whims who least realizes that few drops of dew cannot quench the thirst. In hard times it is only the family which comes forward to share the responsibilities. These fairy-birds fly off in trying times in quest to devastate another nestle. These silent suffers leave everything on Time which neither forgets nor forgives. Totally devastated emotionally and physically they compromise with the prevailing painful conditions in order to give some space to family members to live with dignity.

Kashmir loses a poor man’s doctor in Jalal’s demise Vijay Malla

become a multi-millionaire during the his 45 year long active service. One has yet to see a son as dutiful as Dr Jalal who preferred to be by the side of his mother, a widow, to earning laurels as a cardiologist in New Delhi. Son of a villager Dr Jalal had achieved eminence by

Dr. S. Jalal, a well-known cardiologist was cast for a role at the national level and had he opted for New Delhi he would have earned bigger laurels as a medical scientist. But he preferred Kashmir to a bigger role at the national level. However, the state lost a People and politicians in the valley had doctor who treated the poor. He died after a month-long battle in the AIIMs in New Delhi. Dr S.Jalal, who was loved by the complete trust in his expertise as a senior faculty members at the AIIMS when he was simply a student undergoing cardiologist. Had it not been the case postgraduate courses in cardiology, opted for his homeland, Pampore-Srinagar simply Sheikh Abdullah would have not opted for to serve people in the valley. And for about three decades he served people, irrespective of their creed, cast, region or economic Dr Jalal’s opinion when he (Sheikh) fell ill status. Yes, a number of intellectuals, academicians, poets, writers, journalists, in August-September 1982. Dr Jalal spent doctors and political leaders have lost their lives in the 23-year long militancy related a number of weeks in the house located violence but the valley may not be able to bear the loss it has suffered in the death of Dr Jalal. Dr. Sheikh Jalal died on Saturday at All behind the Nedous Hotel on the Maulana India Institute of Medical Sciences a month after he was critically injured in a militant attack at his hometown of Pampore in Azad Road in Srinagar tending to the ailing Kashmir. Militants attacked him and his gunmen on July 18, in which two security leader. Though some of the eminent men were killed on the spot and Dr Jalal received serious injuries. Hospital adminiscardiologists from New Delhi and other tration sources at AIIMS confirmed Dr. Jalal's death and said that his post mortem parts of the country had visited the Sheikh was being conducted by a team of doctors. His body would be flown to Srinagar for funeral rites by an afternoon flight even as they prescribed medicines only after some J&K Government officials were trying to arrange a special air carrier. Formerly seeking opinion from Dr Jalal. Director of SKIMS tertiary care hospital and Head of Cardiology department Dr. Jalal had been attacked by suspected militants near his his caliber as a cardiologist. And those Though some of the eminent cardiologists ancestral home in Pampore on July 18. Both patients from Jammu and Kashmir who from New Delhi and other parts of the country of his personal security guards had died in would visit New Delhi or Chandigarh for had visited the Sheikh they prescribed the broad daylight attack. Dr Jalal was a treatment to their heart ailments would usually medicines only after seeking opinion from Dr down-to-earth more of a human being than a refer those patients back to Dr Jalal. People Jalal. Unfortunately he had become victim medical practitioner. Money was never his and politicians in the valley had complete trust of what one would call “dirty political love and had it been the case he would have in his expertise as a cardiologist. Had it not intrigues within Sheri Kashmir Institute of

Medical Sciences, Soura, Srinagar, where he joined as a cardiologist and rose to become its Director. I have not been able to fathom the reason for being in the centre of one controversy or the other. He was a doctor, a gantleman who was misunderstood by his colleagues, by political leaders and never by patients. Dr Jalal had many interesting anecdotes to say. One pertained to a senior doctor in the AIIMS. .One eminent surgeon, Dr Atma Prakash, had taken ill during the middle of a night. He used to reside within the faculty complex of the AIIMS.Since he had faith in Dr Jalal Atma Prakash called for the young doctor. Dr Jalal administered all medicines that were required to revive his heart. But he died in the morning. When his body was being carried to the cremation ground Dr.Jalal was one among a big group of mourners accompanying the body. A couple of sleuths of an Indian intelligence agency, who also accompanied the body, were heard by Jalal asking each other “why Atma Prakash had summoned a muslim when there were other senior doctors available for help ?” They went even to the extent of smelling some mischief from Dr Jalal. Alas! Dr Jalal survived that incident but could not save himself from the bullets of unidentified gunmen. His death is a big loss to his wife, mother and children but a bigger loss to the people of Kashmir. What could have been the reason for unidentified gunmen to attak Dr Jalal? He was highly gullible. He placed trust in everybody and would open his heart before strangers too. His mother would be waiting for her son to get up and have “namkeen chai” (tea added with salt and milk) and chappati made of maize flour for his breakfast. Personally I believe that Dr Jalal was a symbol of a man of simple living and high thinking .He did not move out of of Pampore and settle somewhere in Srinagar when he had the option. He had no love for comforts and that is why rustic life suited him. But the gunmen thought otherwise. Peace be to his soul.

a supplement to help you sleep

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, useful for inducing sleep and extending one’s sleep duration.

It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan, found in certain foods like meat, fruits, grains and vegetables. Internal medicine specialist Dr Anil G Ballani says, the production of melatonin is influenced by environmental light.”It is released in circulation with the body’s circadian rhythm. Because it induces sleep, its concentration is less during the day and more during the night,” he says. A study suggests that the primary purpose of melatonin supplements is to treat sleep disorders, and is considered safer than sleeping pills. The side effects Be cautioned. Melatonin is a hormone and comes with risks.

Frequent melatonin use - especially in the typical dosage of 3-6 mg - can cause your body to produce even less of the hormone, creating an even greater need for it in your body.Ideal dosage There’s no such thing as an ideal dosage when it comes to taking melatonin supplements. That’s because the problems and their severity differ from person to person. Consultant physician Dr Sunil Dalvi says, “The dosage varies from 0.2 to 20 mg, but it changes from person to person and in duration too. In order to treat insomnia, the causes underlying it need to be determined before starting medication. Therefore, it is best to get diagnosed by a doctor first.”Precautions Since melatonin supplements induce sleep, one shouldn’t take them before/during driving, swimming, while handling machinery, or consuming alcohol. Dr Dalvi warns, “It interferes with blood levels and/actions of anticoagulants (agents that reduce and prevent clotting of blood), immunosuppressants (agents that can suppress or prevent the immune response), anti-diabetic drugs, birth control pills and hence should be used with caution.”

Blood test to predict postnatal depression PND affects one in seven women and is far more severe than ‘baby blues. Mothers may struggle to bond with their babies and treatment and support are vital. Researchers at Warwick Medical School found women who developed the condition were more likely to have variants of two receptor genes involved in the body’s stress response, the Daily Mail reported. The discovery could lead to earlier treatment for women who are likely to suffer from postnatal depression. At present women are often diagnosed by chance if a midwife or relative notices the symptoms, which usually appear a fortnight after birth. However, many new mothers are unwilling to admit they are suffering in the mistaken belief the condition means they are a ‘bad mother.’ Presenting the teams research to the International Congress of Endocrinology, Professor Dimitris Grammatopoulos said: “Current screening policies rely on the opportunistic finding of PND cases using screening tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Score (EPDS), but such tests cannot identify women at risk, ahead of them developing the condition.” The scientists assessed a group of 200 pregnant women for PND

using the EPDS, once during their first visit to the ante-natal clinic, and again two to eight weeks after they had given birth. They found that the women who developed PND were more likely to have a DNA sequence variation in two receptor genes (the

cocorticoid receptor and the corticotrophinreleasing hormone receptor-1). These receptors control the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, which control the activity of hormones triggered in response to stress. The finding appears to show that post-

natal depression is a specific subgroup of depression with a distinct genetic element, which means that some women are genetically more reactive to the environmental factors that trigger depression. Professor Grammatopoulos said their study was the first to show a link between the functioning of the HPA axis and postnatal depression. “We think that we have made an important step forward in characterising the prospective risks and are therefore paving the way for timely, appropriate medical treatment for women who are likely to develop PND,” he said. The team now intend to conduct further research on other genetic variants of the HPA axis in a larger, multi-centre study involving women from Coventry, Birmingham, and London. PND is a serious condition and quite different from the ‘baby blues’, which is milder and shorter-lived. Symptoms include sadness, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, crying episodes, reduced libido, anxiety and irritability. Effects on children can be significant; for example, depressed mothers are less likely to be affectionate towards and to play with their children and they may use less ‘baby talk’, which is designed to engage the child’s attention.

Nutritionist Dr Sunita Dube says that parents can instill healthy eating habits in their kids, without turning meal times into a battle zone. “By encouraging healthy eating habits now, you can make a huge impact on your child’s lifelong relationship with food. Good nutrition begins in infancy. Healthy eating can stabilise children’s energy, sharpen their minds, and even out their moods. Unfortunately, kids are bombarded by messages that can counteract your efforts. Between peer pressure and constant commercials for junk foods, getting children to eat well might seem more futile than fruitful.” According to clinical nutritionist Dr Nupur Krishnan, a child needs a balanced and adequate diet to supply nutrients and energy needed for growth. Although children’s food consumption is highly variable from meal to meal, their daily energy consumption is relatively constant because they adjust it at meals. - A child requires more calories

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, incurable disease of the central nervous system that affects about 2.5 million people worldwide. Some patients use, or have tried, omega-3 fatty acids supplementation to control the disease because the essential fatty acids could theoretically have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in mul-

tiple sclerosis, the authors wrote in their study background. Oivind Torkildsen, M.D., Ph.D., of Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway, and colleagues included 92 patients with mul-

tiple sclerosis in their doubleblind, placebo-controlled trial to examine whether omega-3 fatty acid supplementation as a monotherapy (single therapy) or in combination with subcutaneous (under the skin) interferon beta-1a could reduce disease activ-

ity. Half of the patients (46) were given omega-3 fatty acids - 1350 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid and 850 mg of docosahexaenoic acid daily - and the other half (46) were administered placebo. After six months, all patients received interferon beta-1a three times a week for another 18 months. Researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure disease activity by the number of new T1-weighted gadolinium-enhancing lesions in the brain. “The results from this study did not show any beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on disease activity in multiple sclerosis as a monotherapy or in combination with interferon beta.

It is said that your hair says a lot about your personal health, care, style and grooming, but does this mean that all bald men have health and grooming issues? We think not! Here’s taking a look at the top 10 myths about going bald.. Stress leads to baldness. High level of emotional stress is often observed as a factor, which accelerates baldness in genetically vulnerable individuals. But stress is not a leading cause behind malepattern baldness. As a matter of fact, it is a symptom of male-pattern baldness and not a cause. Hair loss is caused by

decreased blood flow to the scalp. Medically it is believed that when your hair is growing, you do need a significant amount of blood flow reaching your scalp, but once you lose your hair, blood flow to the scalp decreases. Thus, advertisements that claim that their hair-care product contains ‘nutrients’ and ‘vitamins’ to promote blood flow to the scalp in order to bid baldness goodbye, shouldn’t be believed entirely. Please note that decreased flow of blood to the scalp is a result of hair loss, but not a cause of it. Level of testosterone and baldness is closely linked. Yes, in a way. But let us un-

“A child requires more protein than an adult not only for tissue repair but also for growth. About 14 to 15 per cent of calories should be protein. The main sources of protein are milk and milk products (curd, paneer, lassi, shrikhand), meat, fish,

masala curry as well as a great dish for dinner, for those who cant stand to eat them along. Here are some recipes for unique ways to cook eggs. Spinach - Another must have vegetable made popular by Popeye, this fictional character got it right! eggs, nuts, cereals and pulses. The amount of food a child needs varies according to height, build, gender and activity levels. Most children usually eat the amount of food that’s right for them, however, it is up to parents to make sure their children have the right food available to choose from,” says Dr Krishnan. Dietician and nutritionist Vaishali Marathe says that adolescence is accompanied with accelerated physical, biochemical and emotional development. “In this growth spurt time, kids gain about 20 per cent of adult height and 50 per cent of adult weight. Since growth is so rapid, requirements for all nutrients increase. There are increased demands for energy, proteins, minerals and vitamins,” she says. an orthopaedic sports and manual therapy specialist from PhysioHealth Clinic, Khar, says that almost 70 per cent of his clients are in their 20s with back ailments that should’ve struck them 15 years later, if at all. “Bad posture, heavy backpacks and sitting too much are the causes,” he says. Referring to the people hitting the gym for intensive workouts after work, he says, “People getting active suddenly after sitting around a lot.” “They need an instructor to watch over what they’re doing.” A common species among the young with back grievances are desk job employees - those who spend their days in sedentary glued to their computer screens. Dr Shaikh says, “The HR department of a company with many sedentary employees should consult physiotherapists before constructing work stations.

derstand this further. It is believed that people with a high level of testosterone will not inevitably experience genetic hair loss. Please note that hair loss is caused by DTH (dihydrotestosterne). Some people tend to produce more of DTH than the others; however this is not directly linked to the amount of testosterone in the body. Also, if high amounts of testosterone were the problem, the hair present in other parts of the body would also be expected to fall out. Certain shampoos can make hair grow faster. Scientifically speaking, there is no shampoo or oil, which can make your hair grow faster.

Shampoos and oils might work, only if you want to give your hair more body and protection from scanty growth. You should always go for doctor-recommended products. Tight hats can cause baldness easily. It is often seen that bald men wear hats, but this is a complete myth. Wearing tight hats may slightly damage your hair, but it can in no way affect the follicles of your scalp. Hats do not cause hair breakage and if the hat is not cleaned well, it can lead to an oily scalp, but not hair loss. Also note that hair follicles, which help in hair growth, get oxygen from our blood stream and not from air.

Tomatoes have lycopene and red orbs which are well known for their cancer-defending properties. They are full of Vitamin A and Vitamin K, which help in keeping your blood pressure levels under control. A good steak or bacon now and then - Every once in a while it’s good to have a good chunk of red meat. This is because red meat contains animal fats and proteins and on the whole makes for an extremely wholesome and satiating meal. And unless you are properly satiated with your food, you are not eating well. A nice rack of lamb will do very well too. Dark chocolate - For that sweet tooth it is important to keep some dark chocolate handy. This will help you overcome the urge for reaching for some unhealthy, sweet dessert that it’s best you say away from whether you are skinny, fat, or somewhere in between. Dark chocolate that contains at least 60% cocoa is good for heart and liver health. Red wine - You will be doing your body a lot of good if you switch from your favourite drink to red wine because of its antioxidant properties. Good health doesn’t have to be about neglecting all indulgences, and if you think of red wine as an indulgence, it’s time you didn’t. In fact, red wine is a clever alcohol choice.
