The association also expressed concern on the reports that majority of students come from some particular subjects. “This is a skewed result, proving to be one of the worst, on the scale of cleanliness,” said Var. “On one hand about thousand students are selected from a particular stream and on the other hand no students have been selected from other

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 24To discuss establishment of Transworld Muslim University, Sheikh-ulAlam Research University and Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa University in the State, a meeting of the Select Committee of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council was held here this morning. Member Legislative Council, Mr Devender Singh Rana, who is Chairman of the Committee, presided over the meeting while MLCs Mr B R Kundal, Ravinder Kumar Sharma and Syed Asgar Ali were present. At the outset the members sought information with regard to procedures and parameters in vogue for establishment of Universities and ways and means thereof. The Committee held a detailed discussion
on different aspects with regard to setting up of these varsities in the private sector while appreciating the crucial need for expanding the outreach of higher learning across the state in view of larger number of students, especially belonging to far off pockets, evincing keen interest in shaping their academic career in a big way. The panel observed that the participation of private players in this effort should be encouraged, saying this is imperative to supplement the governmental endeavours in making available quality and standard education to the reach of students belonging to various segments of the society. However, the members said that there should be no compromise on norms to ensure highest standards of education with an effective oversight mechanism.
The issues like management of Universities and control of the government over these institutions came under thorough discussion. The members observed that before establishment of such institutions, it is necessary to have a thorough view of the infrastructural facilities being put in place and the financial backup thereof. The Committee felt that there was need for adhering the prescribed guidelines in this regard which need to be laid out after due diligence. The Committee, in particular, felt the necessity of upgraded infrastructural facilities for raising the intake capacity of higher educational institutions in view of growing number of students. The stress, however, should be on introducing job oriented courses which are relevant to the job market, the Committee observed.

Provision of employment a daunting task
T
he rising unemployment in educated youth is becoming a big challenge for the state government which has limited resources to cope up with the situation. As the state has no big industries, no corporate houses hence all the dependence of providing employment comes on the shoulders of the governmental sector which is already economically fragile and weak. There are over seven lakh unemployed youth in the state who are eagerly waiting to get some kind of employment so as to make both ends meet. The state can provide employment to merely twenty five thousand youth a year and if one goes by rough figures, about fifty thousand youth complete their courses every year in different educational, professional, skilled and semi skilled streams which means that the backlog of unemployed youth goes up by twenty five thousand in one year. If the trend continues the number of unemployed youth will rise to a proportion where it will be almost impossible to tackle the gigantic task. As already mentioned above the state lacks resources which could be used to put in place a mechanism for solving unemployment problem. The big hurdle in the state for establishing heavy industries is the worrying environmental aspect. The state particularly the Kashmir valley can hardly afford industrial pollution which can destroy the natural wealth of the state for which it is famous all over the world. There has been a continuous agitation by the state employees for enhancement of retirement age from fifty eight years to sixty years but the state government has not exceeded to this demand because if it is done, it will hamper further the opportunities of getting employment for these lakhs of educated youth. It is unfortunate that the earlier governments have not given any attention towards providing professional and skilled education to our youth. It is because of this that the number of the unemployed increased with every passing year as they could not go for self employment by establishing their own employment generation units or could get accommodated in those institutions where skilled professionals in thousands are in need. The dependence on government jobs has also increased because of narrow social thinking which compels the youth to strive for a government job than a private one. It is imperative and foremost for the government to formulate a meticulous employment policy so that more youth are accommodated, they are not subjected to frustration and in future they are made professionals and skilled than a mere qualified one's.

PHYSIOGRAPHY OF WATER
ndia is a land of many rivers and mountains. Its geographical area of about 329 MHa is criss-crossed by a large number of small and big rivers, some of them figuring amongst the mighty rivers of the world. The rivers and mountains have a greater significance in the history of Indian cultural development, religious and spiritual life. It may not be an exaggeration to say that the rivers are the heart and soul of Indian life. India is a union of States with a federal set up. Politically, the country is divided into 28 States and 7 Union Territories. A major p a r t o f I n d i a ’s p o p u l a t i o n o f 1,027,015,247 (2001 census) is rural and agriculturally oriented for whom the rivers are the source of their prosperity. Physiography Physiographically, India may be divided into seven well defined regions. These are: The Northern Mountains, comprising the mighty Himalayan ranges The Great Plains traversed by the Indus and Ganga Brahmaputra river systems. As much as one third of this lies in the arid zone of western Rajasthan. The remaining area is mostly fertile plains; The Central Highlands, consisting of a wide belt of hills running east-west starting from Aravalli ranges in the west and terminating in a steep escarpment in the east. The area lies between the Great Plains and the Deccan Plateau; The Peninsular Plateaus comprising the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, North Deccan Plateau, South Deccan Plateau and Eastern Plateau; The East Coast, a belt of land of about 100-130 km wide, bordering the Bay of Bengal land lying to the east of the Eastern Ghats; The West Coast, a narrow belt of land of about 10-25 km wide, bordering the Arabian Sea and lying to the west of the Western Ghats, and; The islands, comprising the coral islands of Lakshadeep in Arabian Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands of the Bay of Bengal. Climate The presence of the great mountain mass formed by the Himalayas and its spurs on the North and of the ocean on the South are the two major influences operating on the climate of India. The first poses an impenetrable barrier to the influence of cold winds from central Asia, and gives the sub-continent the elements of tropical type of climate. The second, which is the
I
Daily
source of cool moisture-laden winds reaching India, gives it the elements of the oceanic type of climate. India has a very great diversity and variety of climate and an even greater variety of weather conditions. The climate ranges from continental to oceanic, from extremes of heat to extremes of cold, from extreme aridity and negligible rainfall to excessive humidity and torrential rainfall. It is, therefore, necessary to avoid any generalisation as to the prevalence of any particular kind of climate, not only over the country as a whole but over major areas in it. The climatic condition influences to a great extent the water resources utilisation of the country. Rainfall Rainfall in India is dependent in differing degrees on the South-West and NorthEast monsoons, on shallow cyclonic depressions and disturbances and on violent local storms which form regions where cool humid winds the sea meet hot dry winds from the land and occasionally reach cyclonic dimension. Most of the rainfall in India takes place under the influence of South West monsoon between June to September except in Tamil Nadu where it is under the influence of North-East monsoon during October and November. The rainfall in India shows great variations, unequal seasonal distribution, still more unequal geographical distribution and the frequent departures from the normal. It generally exceeds 1000 mm in areas to the East of Longitude 78 degree. It extends to 2500 mm along almost the entire West Coast and Western Ghats and over most of Assam and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. On the West of the line joining Porbandar to Delhi and thence to Ferozpur the rainfall diminishes rapidly from 500 mm to less than 150 mm in the extreme west. The Peninsula has large areas of rainfall less than 600 mm with pockets of even 500 mm. The estimate of area average rainfall is subjective depending on the method adopted. Therefore, estimates of local rainfall over the country obtained by employing other techniques may differ, especially in a vast country like India. Temperature The variations in temperature are also marked over the Indian sub-continent. During the winter seasons from November to February, due to the effect of continental winds over most of the
country, the temperature decreases from South to North. The mean maximum temperature during the coldest months of December and January varies from 29 degree centigrade in some part of the peninsula to about 18 degree centigrade in the North, whereas the mean minimum varies from about 24 degree centigrade in the extreme South to below 5 degree centigrade in the North. From March to May is usually a period of continuous and rapid rise of temperature. The highest temperature occurs in North India, particularly in the desert regions of the North-West where the maximum may exceed 48 degree centigrade. With the advent of South West Monsoon in June, there is a rapid fall in the maximum temperature in the central portions of the country. The temperature is almost uniform over the area covering two thirds of the country which gets good rain. In August, there is a marked fall in temperature when the monsoon retreat from North India in September. In North-West India, in the month of November, the mean maximum temperature is below 38 degree centigrade and the mean minimum below 10 degree centigrade. In the extreme North, temperature drops below freezing point. Agro-Climatic Zones The Planning Commission after examining the earlier studies on the regionalisation of the agricultural economy has recommended that agricultural planning be done on the basis of agroclimatic regions. For resource development, the country has been broadly divided into fifteen agricultural regions based on agroclimatic features, particularly soil type, climate including temperature and rainfall and its variation and water resources availability - Western Himalayan division, Eastern Himalayan division, Lower Gangetic plain region, Middle Gangetic plain region, Upper Gangetic plain region, Trans-Gangetic plain region, Eastern plateau and hill region, Central plateau and hill region, Western plateau and hill region, Southern plateau and hill region, East coast plain and hill region, West coast plain and hill region, Gujarat plain and hill region, Western plain and hill region and Island region. Rivers India is blessed with many rivers. Twelve of them are classified as major
rivers whose total catchment area is 252.8 million hectare (M.Ha). Of the major rivers, the Ganga - Brahmaputra Meghana system is the biggest with catchment area of about 110 M.Ha which is more than 43 percent of the catchment area of all the major rivers in the country. The other major rivers with catchment area more than 10 M.Ha are Indus (32.1 M.Ha.), Godavari (31.3 M.Ha.), Krishna, (25.9 M.Ha.) and Mahanadi (14.2 M.Ha). The catchment area of medium rivers is about 25 M.Ha and Subernarekha with (1.9 M.Ha.) catchment area is the largest river among the medium rivers in the country. Water Bodies Inland Water resources of the country are classified as rivers and canals; reservoirs; tanks & ponds; beels, oxbow lakes, derelict water; and brackish water. Other than rivers and canals, total water bodies cover all area of about 7 M.Ha. Of the rivers and canals, Uttar Pradesh occupies the first place with the total length of rivers and canals as 31.2 thousand km, which is about 17 percent of the total length of rivers and canals in the country. Other States following Uttar Pradesh are Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh. Among the remaining forms of the inland water resources, tanks and ponds have maximum area (2.9 M.Ha.) followed by reservoirs (2.1 M.Ha.). Most of the area under tanks and ponds lies in Southern States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. These States along with West Bengal, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, account for 62 percent of total area under tanks and ponds in the country. As far as reservoirs are concerned, major States like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh account for larger portion of area under reservoirs. More than 77 percent of area under beels, oxbow, lakes and derelict water lies in the States of Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Assam. Orissa ranks first as regards the total area of brackish water and is followed by Gujarat, Kerala and West Bengal. The total area of inland water resources is, thus, unevenly distributed over the country with five States namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and West Bengal accounting for more than half of the country’s inland water bodies.
TRANS FATTY ACIDS: HARMFUL EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH
ndia is undergoing rapid dietary transition. High economic growth has resulted in a burgeoning middle-class having greater access to commercially available foods, including fried and baked food items. Most of these foods contain high amounts of Trans Fatty Acids (TFAs), particularly if cooked in vanaspati (partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) which is often preferred for its low cost and longer shelf life. TFAs can adversely affect choleste rol levels, predispose the individual to diabetes, coronary heart disease and may also affect many of his body organs. Trans fatty acids or Trans fats are the most harmful type of fats which can have much more adverse effects on our body than any other dietary constituent. These fats are largely produced artificially but a small amount also occurs naturally thus in our diet, these may be present as Artificial TFAs an d/ or Natural TFAs. Artificial TFAs are formed when hydrogen is made to react with the oil to produce fats resembling pure ghee/butter. In our diet the major sources of artificial TFAs are the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (PHVO)/vanaspati/ margarine while the natural TFAs are present in meats and dairy products, though in small amounts. TFAs pose a h igher risk of heart disease than saturated fats. While saturated fats raise total cholesterol levels, TFAs not only raise total cholesterol levels but also reduce the good cholesterol (HDL), which helps to protect us against heart disease. Trans fats consumption increases the risk of developing heart
disease and stroke. It is also associated with a higher risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, infertility, certain types of cancers and can also lead to compromised fetal development causing harm to the yet to be born baby. Despite their harmful effect the reason
fried by using Vanaspati/Margarine contain TFA. These include: Cakes and Pastries; Patty, Rusk; Fried Aloo Chaat , AlooTikki (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Sweets (Mithai) (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Cookies / biscuits, French fries, Potato chips, Bhatura, Samosa, Parantha, etc.

The most common dietary source of they have a greater chance of having Trans fats is the partially hydrogenated Trans fats and checking the Nutrition vegetable fat commonly known as Facts label on packaged food items for ‘Vanaspati Ghee’/Margarine. Since their TFA content if indicated. If a label partially hydrogenated vegetable fat says “0” trans fat, it can still contain 0.5 (Vanaspati/Margarine) is rather high in grams trans fats per serving or less. TFA, all food items prepared, baked or While some developing countries have
laid down norms for TFA content of food, India has yet to pass/implement the regulation regarding the TFA containing fats or the TFA content of commercially prepared food items. Therefore, the responsibility lies with th e consumers to safeguard their interest. Harmful Effects of Trans Fats on Human Health Studies across the world indicate that: • TFA raise the VLDL, LDL-c, Triglyceride, Lp (a) lipoprotein and Free fatty acid levels on the other hand it lowers the LDL-c particle size and HDL-c levels. All these contribute to raising the risk of heart diseases. • Intake of partially hydrog enated vegetable oils contributes to the risk of myocardial infarction • TFA promotes systemic inflammation which increases the C-reactive protein leading to thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), diabetes, and sudden death due to heart failure. • TFA causes endothelial dysfunction (by increasing circulating bio-markers including soluble inter cellular adhesion molecule1, soluble vascular-cell adhesion molecule1 and E-selectin) which is a key step in the development of atherosclerosis • TFA have been found to increase insulin resistance and seem to have a unique cardio-metabolic imprint that is linked to insulin-resistance and metabolic-syndrome pathways. • Consumption of trans-unsaturated fatty acids has shown to increase the risk for ovulatory infertility. • TFA compromises fetal growth and development.

Rs 6 crore compensation to NRI doctor New Delhi/Kolkata, Oct 24: The Supreme Court on Thursday, Oct 24 asked Kolkata-based Advanced Medicare and Research Institute (AMRI) Hospital to give Rs 5.96 crore compensation to an NRI doctor who lost his wife due to medical negligence. But isn't it too little, too late for Dr Kunal Saha? After fighting for 15 long years, Dr Kunal, a noted AIDS vaccine researcher at the Children's Hospital and Ohio State university at Columbus, Ohio (US), will be given Rs 5.96 crore by the hospital authorities who earlier had rejected to accept any responsibilities when 36-year-old Anuradha Saha passed away in 1998. Dr Kunal initially lost his fight as West Bengal Medical Council and the Calcutta High Court dismissed his case against AMRI Hospital. However, he continued his fight for getting justice for his wife, he had moved the apex court which found the hospital and its doctors guilty of medical negligence. The Supreme Court also had referred the case to the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC), which had fixed the compensation amount to Rs 1.7 crore. The NCDRC asked three Kolkata doctors and the AMRI to share the compensation amount. Dr Kunal, however, claimed that the compensation amount, along with interest since 1998, should be Rs 200 crore and moved the apex court again. On Thursday, the apex court decided on his plea and enhanced the compensation to Rs. 5.96 crore. Dr Kunal also had formed People for Better Treatment (PBT) to make his crusade into a mass movement and filed cases against three doctors and the AMRI hospital. Anuradha had suffered an acute pain when the couple had come to Kolkata from US for a Holiday in 1998. She was admitted to AMRI. Instead of improving, Anuradha took a turn
for the worse after a steroid called Depomedral was given to her. Later Anuradha was moved to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, but it was too. Expressing his disappointment with the Kolk-
ata doctors, Dr Kunal was quoted as saying, "When a patient goes to the hospital, he gives himself in the hands of the doctor. Every day we see cases of medical negligence but no doctor is caught."
Bundelkhand a victim of BJP's India shining politics: Rahul Gandhi Slamming BJP for its "politics of India Shining," Rahul Gandhi today reached out to the poor and rural youths in Bundelkhand, hard-selling the UPA's flagship schemes of food security, land acquisition and job guarantee programme MNREGA. The Congress Vice-President stressed on the unity of his party in the faction-ridden state unit and expressed confidence that it will form the next government in Madhya Pradesh, which will "not belong to a leader" but to the poor, youths and women. "Bundelkhand has become a victim of the slogan of India shining. The politics of India Shining has ignored the screams of the people of Bundelkhand for development. Did you feel the glaze of India shining? This is politics of airconditioner (those sitting in air-conditioned rooms), the politics of industrialists, they practise," Gandhi said while addressing an election rally in the state, where Congress has been out of power for a decade. Gandhi, who has been focusing on the Bundelkhand region for quite some time and had also been instrumental in getting a financial package for the area, said farmers wanted to know where did the money sent by the Centre to dig
wells go. Interacting with the crowds gathered to hear him, Gandhi asked them whether they had felt any impact of the "India Shining politics". "Youths are not happy, farmers are not happy, women are not happy," he said. In a speech laced with anecdotes like dreams of a "sweating farmer" engaged in agricultural work that his
sons or grandsons would some day fly in aeroplanes, to that of village women and youths, Gandhi briefly mentioned Indira Gandhi and said in contrast to BJP's politics of only development, Congress politics takes into account both things -- development as well empowering people. Seeking to add a personal touch to his associating with people in Bundelkhand, Gandhi recalled that when he had first come to the region, he had suffered mosquito bites and when he had consumed water in a village, it had got his stomach upset. "But I was happy. Politicians should know the hardships faced by people," he said. BJP-led NDA had given slogan of 'India Shining' during 2004 Lok Sabha elections, which saw the UPA coming to power, bringing to an end the NDA rule at the Centre. Gandhi claimed that the UPA regime had constructed three times more roads than those laid down during the BJP-led NDA rule, which keeps speaking about development and roads. "We made three times more road than what were constructed during NDA's period. BJP did not construct as many airports as we did.
Patna: A Bihar woman health official is set to share stage with Malala Yousufzai, who was shot in the head and neck by the Taliban for advocating girls' education in her country Pakistan, in New York next month, officials on Thursday said. Martha Dodray, in her mid-40s, is an auxiliary nursing midwife posted at Kusheshwarsthan primary health centre in the state's Darbhanga district. She was selected by the United Nations Foundation (UNF) for her extraordinary work to eradicate polio. "I am happy that UNF is honouring me for my work in polio immunization campaign at a
function to be held at New York on November 6, where Malala would be also felicitated," Martha, a tribal native of Palamu district of neighbouring Jharkhand, said. She said she walked several kilometres each day to reach remote and inaccessible villages to administer polio vaccine to hundreds of children, mostly belonging to poor families. Darbhanga district magistrate Kumar Ravi said Martha has contributed in the polio vaccination drive in remote pockets of the flood-prone rural areas."Marha was recently selected as one of the
BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan today promised to bring "radical reforms" in governance if his party comes to power and accused the Congress government of "piling up miseries" on the people and putting Delhi in intensive care unit by its "misrule". A day after being named as the party's CM candidate following a bitter race for the position within Delhi BJP, Vardhan said a "clean, transparent and people's government" will be in place if voted to power and ruled out any infighting in the party fold. In a show of unity, Vardhan addressed a press conference flanked by Delhi election in-charge Nitin Gadkari, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel, Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly V K Malhotra and former Delhi unit chief Vijender Gupta and asserted that the party will leave no stone unturned to defeat the "corrupt" Congress government. The former Health Minister promised to bring "radical changes" in governance and offered a transparent, innovative and corruption-free administration if BJP was brought to power. "All the leaders and workers will work hard to oust the corrupt and ineffective government. The government has failed in
all fronts. Poor people are living in helllike situation. The city is in ICU and it needs a healing touch," Vardhan, fondly called as 'Doctor Saab', said. Exhuding confidence of his party's
victory, Gadkari said the people of Delhi were in "exile for last 15 years" and that is going to end in December. "The people of Delhi were in exile. But now the exile will end and the (BJP) government will be formed. It will be a Ram
Rajya," he said. Vardhan attacked the government on number of issues including "backbreaking" price rise of essential commodities, fruits and vegetables, "rising" crime, "ever increasing" pollution in Yamuna, "high" power tariff, "poor" education and healthcare infrastructure and CWG scam. "Very soon the people of Delhi will be freed from the Sheila Dikshit dispensation which has adopted such a casual approach towards governance because of which the whole city is suffering," Vardhan, who was named BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate yesterday, said.Rejecting reports of infighting in the party, Goel, who lost the race for Chief Ministerial candidate, resolved to put all his effort to make the party victorious and showered praise on Vardhan. "The party will fight unitedly to oust the corrupt Congress government. The people of Delhi are fed up with the misrule of Congress. I am confident of our victory," said Goel. "I do not have to tell anything about Harsh Vardhan. He is a popular leader. His contribution towards eradication of polio was appreciated within and outside the country," he said in his brief comment.
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has sent a formal invitation to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inviting her for an open public debate. "I have sent a formal proposal to Sheila Dikshit for a public debate, but it must happen in public, not in any TV studio," said Kejriwal. "Why is Sheila Dikshit is scared of a debate? Harshvardhan (BJP's chief ministerial candidate), she and I can debate, not in a TV studio, but among people," Kejriwal added. Kejriwal’s official invitation to the Delhi CM came days after she told a TV news channel that she was ready for a debate with the AAP leader if he formally writes to her. She had said, “I am not shy of a political debate. I have debated with Sushma Swaraj in the past. Public debates are healthy in a democracy." Dikshit’s response came after Kejriwal dared her for a public debate with him on the issues relating to "inflated" power and water bills and women's safety among others. Well, it would be interesting to see the veteran Delhi CM getting engaged in a verbal duel with Kejriwal, the former RTI activist and now a politician. Dikshit, who is eyeing an unprecedented fourth successive term in upcoming Assembly polls, admitted recently that Kejriwal has caught the people's imagination to a certain extent. Kejriwal, 45, whose won the Magsaysay Award for emergent leadership for his campaign to get the Right to Information law passed in India, has announced his candidature from New Delhi Assembly constituency,
The next general elections would see a fight between Congress and RSS, not BJP, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said today, calling the saffron party a "wholly owned subsidiary" of the Sangh Parivar fountainhead. Ramesh also hit out at BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, saying the opposition party was only projecting Modi, whereas "we are asking people to vote for our party and its ideology"."What has happened in the last few months has given proof of the fact that 2014 is not Congress versus BJP, but the fight is between Congress and RSS, because whatever the RSS orders, BJP follows," Ramesh told reporters here. "If proof is needed that the BJP is the wholly owned subsidiary of the holding company based in Nagpur called the RSS, what has happened in the last 12 to 15 months is adequate enough," the Union Rural Development Minister said. Claiming that BJP had lost its ground due to recent developments, Ramesh said 2014 would be a battle between Congress ideology and RSS ideology. "It will be battle between ideologies of Congress and regional parties." Hitting out at BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he said the Congress election strategy was not about projecting any one individual. "....now, one individual is saying to the country I,I and I; I, me, my-
best polio workers in India for her devotion and hard work in polio vaccination drive. Her name was recommended for the award ceremony in New York," Darbhanga civil surgeon U.K. Choudhary said. State Health Secretary Sanjay Kumar, who is also executive director of Bihar State Health Society, said the state has become a near polio-free region as it has not recorded a single case of the disease. But Bihar will have to wait till January 14, 2014, to be officially declared a polio free state, when India too will be declared a polio-free country.
Radical reforms if BJP elected to power: Harsh Vardhan
Kejriwal formally invites Sheila Dikshit for public debate which has been electing Congress Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. AAP has decided to field candidates in all 70 constituencies. The party had last week claimed it was on course to form the next government in Delhi. AAP had come out with a survey which showed the party was lead-
ing in 33 of 70 assembly seats in capital. The party has been attacking Delhi government on a number of issues including power and water tariff and alleged corruption. Delhi Asembly elections will be held in the national capital Dec 4 with over 11.5 million voters eligible to cast their ballots in 70 constituencies.

self that is his message to the country, that is the stand of an individual who has been named as the prime ministerial candidate by a party." "....whereas Rahul Gandhi's style is much low key, he speaks not about I, me, myself. He instead speaks about democratising the Congress party from the grass root, he speaks about plans to address some serious issues that
is facing the country today," Ramesh said. "At the end of the day, voter has to decide...We are projecting the Congress party and BJP is projecting Modi and that is the fundamental difference between us. We are asking people to vote for our party and its ideology...whether we get votes or not is different, but this is our strategy," he said.

Tamil Nadu government also hunts for gold, with a difference Chennai: Even as the government searches for gold in the ruins of a centuries-old fort in Uttar Pradesh, the Tamil Nadu government is on a gold hunt of its own. It wants to buy 400 kilos of gold and has asked for bids from suppliers who are interested. What the government specifically wants is
100,000 coins of 22-carat gold, weighing four grams each. These are to be given as part of schemes that offer gold coins to help poor families make Thirumangalyam or mangalsutra for weddings. All bids need to be submitted by November 22. "It is going to be a challenging task. Availability of
gold is the major challenge. Imports of gold is allowed only against export," Jayantilal Challani, president, the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association, told news agency IANS.Government officials say the final contract will ensure the supplier is liable if the coins turn out to be alloyed.
BJP plans big for Narendra Modi's ‘Hunkar Rally’ Patna: Patna’s Gandhi Maidan has stood witness to many historic events right from the freedom struggle to the JP movement and beyond. The historic venue is now decked up for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s ‘Hunkar rally’ on October 27. Going by the massive preparations underway, the event is set to be one of the biggest ever political rallies that Patna has ever seen with giant hoardings and banners dotting most major intersections in the city and also elsewhere in the state. The Bihar BJP has left no stone unturned to ensure that Hunkar rally – the first big party event after the 17-yearold alliance with JD(U) ended on June 16 – makes an impact on the voters of the electorally crucial state. The state unit of the BJP has launched a massive campaign to mobilise support for the rally which will be addressed by Narendra Modi among others. Almost all senior party leaders from Bihar – the party has 12 MPs and 91 MLAs in the state - have fanned out across the 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state to build momentum for the big event. They are holding road shows and meetings to solicit public support for
the rally. Also, after the huge success of ‘NaMO’ tea stalls in Patna, the party has hit upon another novel idea to push brand Modi with the party unit in Saharsa giving out free jalebis in the name of Narendra Modi.
A huge tent measuring over 2.5 lakh sq feet is being erected at Gandhi Maidan – from RBI building to Mona Cinema - for the lakhs of supporters who are expected to come to the state capital. Besides arranging food – packets of puri-sabji and chuda-gur- and shelter, BJP workers have also arranged over one
lakh ‘daatuns’ for their convenience. Party workers are setting up collection and distribution centres - to manage easy distribution of food packets at Fraser Road, near Maharaja Complex, Golamber, near Mauryalok Complex and on Exhibition Road. As many as 11 special trains and 3000 buses have been booked to transport BJP supporters from different parts of the state to the rally venue. Enthusiastic party workers in Jajha are coming to Patna on motorbikes; they have named their cavalcade ‘Hunkar Express’. To spread the ‘Hunkar’ message, the party has distributed two CDs ‘NaMo Hunkar’ and ‘Modi banenge PM’ right up to the village level. Bhojpuri superstar Manoj Tiwari – who recently joined the BJP – is also doing his bit to ensure that the Patna event turns out to be mega success. At Gandhi Maidan, a huge stage has been erected which has a 30-feet-long electronic screen as the backdrop. Also, 30 more screens are being erected all across the ground to ensure that even those sitting at a distance get a clear view of the stage. Hi-tech linear sound system and 12 cameramen stationed at vantage points are also part of the arrangements.

Beware of pacy Mohammad Shami, George Bailey warns Australian batsmen
perfect stage for Bale, Neymar
Australian skipper George Bailey says they did not expect Mohammad Shami to trouble the batsmen with his deceptive pace and movement in the fourth ODI at Ranchi. Ranchi: Rattled by Mohammad Shami's three-wicket burst with the new ball in the abandoned fourth ODI, Australian skipper George Bailey has instructed his batsmen to watch out for the rookie Indian pacer in the remaining games of the ongoing sevenmatch series. Taken aback by Shami's pace and swing, Bailey said: "Obviously Shami bowled very well. He's someone we haven't seen in the series and he was a little bit quicker than what we expected. He certainly got movement off the seam," Bailey told reporters after the fourth one-dayer at th JSCA Stadium yesterday. "That's something to be pretty aware of for the rest of the series. That's obviously what's going to be coming at us," he said. Shami rocked the Australian toporder but half-centuries from Bailey (98) and Glenn Maxwell (92) in a record 153-run fifth wicket stand enabled them to post a challenging 295/8. However, rain played spoilsport when India were 27 for no loss after 4.1 overs and the match was abandoned with Australia continuing to lead the series 2-1. Amassing 318 runs, Bailey yesterday became the first Australia skipper to go past 300 in any bilateral ODI series. Yet a modest Bailey said it was ridiculous for him to think of making to the Ashes squad in the Australian summer.
"I think there's probably eight guys who have got a chance of playing in that Ashes team. It's so far away. It's just ridiculous to look at it," Bailey said. "There are guys who will be at home playing Shield cricket, we've got Australia A games when we get back. It's a completely different format. I don't think there's anyone out playing in these games thinking about that series." Asked whether he had any special preparation for the series in India, Bai-
French Open Super Series: Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu progress, Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa crash out The 18-year-old Sindhu accounted for South Korea’s Ji Hyun Sung as she thrashed the sixth seed 21-8, 21-12 in less than half an hour at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin. Leading Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu progressed to the second round of women’s singles with contrasting wins while it was dead end for comeback pair Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, who lost not only their women’s doubles clash but also their respective mixed doubles matches at the French Open Super Series here Wednesday. The 18-year-old Sindhu accounted for South Korea’s Ji Hyun Sung as she thrashed the sixth seed 21-8, 21-12 in less than half an hour at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin. The World No.10 Indian showed suberb prowess to beat Ji and has taken a 3-0 lead in career meetings. The South Korean has been in excellent form lately, having beaten Saina and reached the final of the Denmark Open Super Series Premier last week. Meanwhile, fourth seed Saina Nehwal had to overcome Thailand’s Nichaon Jindapon in a tough 52-minute battle to progress to the pre-quarters. The World No.4 won the tie 12-21, 21-16, 21-13 to take a 2-0 lead in career meets. In the next round, the Olympic bronze medallist faces a tricky challenge in the face of Ji’s compatriot, Yeon Ju Bae. Though the Hyderabadi has a 5-3 head-tohead against Yeon, it was the South Korean who dashed Saina’s hopes at the World Championships in August.
ley said: "I didn't do anything different. I think coming over here you focus a little bit more on how you're going to play spin, because India have good spinners. "It's important to be at the top of your game there. I'd done a lot of that leading into England as well, so that wasn't too much different." The lower-order added just 57 runs in the last 10 overs as Australia posted a less than 300-plus total for the first time in the series but Bailey begged to differ in his assessment.
Madrid: The 167th La Liga `Clasico` between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Saturday (1600 GMT) could be the ideal stage for Gareth Bale and Neymar to show they are worth a combined price tag of almost 160 million euros.Or, as is more likely, one of the most intense rivalries in football and a match watched by hundreds of millions around the world will again showcase the peerless talents of Barca`s Argentine World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Real`s Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Leaders Barca dropped their first points of the campaign with a 0-0 draw at Osasuna last weekend and victory for Real, as well as providing a huge confidence boost, would put them level with their bitter rivals on 25 points from 10 games.Wales winger Bale replaced Ronaldo as the most expensive player in history when he joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of 100 million euros in the close season, while Barca paid some 57 million to lure Brazil forward Neymar from Santos.Bale`s first weeks in the Spanish capital have been disrupted by injury but coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted that the 24-year-old could feature from the start against Barca after coming on as a second-half substitute in Wednesday`s 2-1 Champions League victory at home to Juventus.Neymar, 21, has shown glimpses of the brilliance that has served his country so well in recent years - he scored the goal against Atletico Madrid that secured the Spanish Super Cup at the end of August - without really catching fire.
Ashes chapter hard to close for Ponting Melbourne: Ricky Ponting knew his time was up when he bowed out of international cricket a year ago, but the competitive fires still rage for the former Australia captain when he imagines facing England one more time on home soil. England`s arrival in Perth on Friday signals the start of the cricket summer Down Under, with a four-week phoney war of tour matches, training and media hype before the second instalment of back-to-back Ashes series gets underway with the first test in Brisbane. In seasons past, Ponting would be plotting the arch-enemy`s downfall at this time, refining his craft in the nets and champing at the bit for the day to arrive when he could stride to the crease to steady an innings with a defiant century. Instead, the 38-year-old has spent his recent days looking back rather than forward, reminiscing over the highs and lows of a long and storied career on a bok tour to promote his autobiography “At The Close Of Play”. Fairly or unfairly, Ponting`s roaring success as a batsman and test captain has been tempered by his record against England, and the harrowing 3-1 series defeat on home soil two years ago left him the only Australian skipper to lose three Ashes series in over 100 years. Little wonder the prospect of watching from the sidelines still tugs at the heartstrings as Australia prepares its bid to wrest the Ashes back after losing the first series 3-0 away. “It does, a certain part of me says, `yeah, I would love to be out there competing,`” Ponting told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. “And when these big test matches and Ashes series come round, I`d love to be out there because that was always the pinnacle for me. “They`re the moments that we all play for. When I was a young boy growing up all I wanted to do was play cricket for Australia and then obviously on the back of that was to be involved in an Ashes series. “That was the reason I played the game was to be involved in those series but at the end of the day my time had gone. “I couldn`t play the way I used to be able to play and when that realisation hits it`s pretty easy to sort of walk away.
Brilliant Zlatan gives PSG four reasons to believe Paris: Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic received a deserved standing ovation after scoring a magnificent half-volley against Anderlecht on Wednesday, although the fans that were applauding him were not his own but those of the opposing team. Not content with a single brilliant strike, the Swede went on to become the 10th man to score four goals in a Champions League tie as PSG won 5-0 in Belgium to extend their perfect record in Group C, and he remains the driving force of a team emerging as serious title contenders.Last season, PSG were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Barcelona but after reinforcing the squad with striker Ednson Cavani, who also scored on Wednesday, and defender Marquinhos, they can be expected to progress even further this campaign.
Classifying F1 as a sport instead of entertainment would be a good place to start: Narain Karthikeyan For the Indian motor sport enthusiast, the third Formula 1 race over the weekend at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) is highly significant for more than one reason. For one, it will be the last time that cars with V8 engines will be racing in Greater Noida. Then, Australian driver Mark Webber will surely be retiring at the end of the season and Brazilian Felipe Massa is also contemplating to quit. And there is this break next year although we all hope that F1 comes back to India in 2015. For me personally, racing here in
the last two seasons was a fantastic experience, an immensely proud moment to be on the starting grid at home. The first-time experience is overwhelming and incomparable, the frenzy, the build-up, the media stuff all make it exciting. You almost forget that there is a race weekend to get through. But once you get to the circuit, you try to shut all of it out and focus on on-track stuff. Still, you are not immune to the buzz, and you keep on pinching yourself that it isn’t a dream. If in 2005, my debut season, someone had told me that I would be on the
grid for my home Grand Prix less than a decade later, I would have told them to get lost! We had strong outings both years, given the equipment and circumstances, but I think the 2011 race was pretty special. I was nervous, not having driven a full race distance since July that year and the pressure of going up against a highly rated driver like Daniel Ricciardo, who will be driving for Red Bull next year.In qualifying we were neck and neck, down to the thousandths of a second, but I got a grid penalty for the race. And it didnÂ’t stop there and then there was a contact on the
first lap and I lost a chunk of the front wing, but we still managed a good race and finished ahead of Ricciardo (by over 30 seconds) and the final result (finishing 17th) was the best we could have hoped for. All in all, it was a magical weekend! It is a shame that no Indian driver is on the grid for the race this year, but F1 drivers aren’t made overnight - it takes several years of competing in the right championships and showing your speed at every level before making it to F1. In my days, the ladder was far more straightforward and simpler than it is today. I never
touched a kart whereas kids today start driving when theyÂ’re eight and do karting for six to eight years before switching to a single-seater. Considering this long development curve, I think Jehan Daruvala has put himself in a good position right now. He has won karting championships in Asia as well as Britain this year and it isn’t easy given the competition. I have interacted with his father and he is fully committed towards supporting Jehan all the way and that is exactly what you need when you are aiming for the top echelon of the sport.
