Stops export of onions through LoC routes
At a time when onion prices have been bringing tears in the eyes of people in India, Pakistan has stopped sending onions into J-K through the cross LoC bartering trade points in the state. The cross LoC trade happens at two points, Poonch and Uri. The traders have been informed by the Pakistani side that due to steady rise in domestic prices in the face of massive demand from
India, the other side can’t supply the product for sometime. "The Pakistani side gave us information that the onion produce cannot be bartered. This is mainly due to increase in the prices in their own domestic market", said Bashir Ahmad, leading cross LoC trader in Uri. According to the traders they had been places orders for onions in bulk due to the soaring price hike in India. "We had placed orders for onions

Congress set to form new council in Kargil
National Conference reduced to play second fiddle Kargil, August 28: In what is considered to be a surprise result, Congress party led by former Chief Executive Councilor Asgar Ali Karbali has won 11 seats in the recently held elections for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council. The National Conference considered to be favourite has won 8 seats while it has support of 4 independents. In all, six independents have made it to the council. Three independents are be-
lieved to be supporting congress. The present CEC Kachoo Ahmad Ali has won so has the former CEC Asgar Ali Karbali. However amongst the prominent loosers are journalist turned politician Nasir Munshi and Mr. Tashi. Our special correspondent reports from Kargil that both the parties were going neck to neck in the initial stages of counting. The elections and the results have now opened the field for horse trading as none of the party seems to be getting a clear majority.
The LAHDC plays a vital role in this hilly district which is one of the most backward districts of the state. The politics in this district is spearheaded by two ideologies Islamia School and IMK which have a tremendous influence on the people of this area. The IMK headed by Mr. Karbali is affiliated with Congress party while as the Islamia School grove has its loyalties attached to National Conference. The two groups are playing a vital role on See Congress on Pg. 11

When Mumbai-born celebrated music maestro Zubin Mehta spoke about Kashmir, he had called it one of his unfulfilled dreams to conduct a concert here. The dream concert will happen on September 7, in spite of opposition from separatists and religion alike. Mehta's will play 'Ehasas-eKashmir' on the historical Mughal garden, Shalimar
Bagh. A private plane from Germany's Bavaria will carry around 100 instruments and same number of players. The television rights have been given to media giants internationally and the show will be aired live in most Europe. The 90-minute concert is likely to have 28 sponsors and is likely to be attended by 1,500 people, including 700 from outside the state. The state government is taking no chances.
Inspector general of police in Kashmir, AG Mir denied there was a heightened security threat and said police will provide security as per the 'protocol' for such events. "We will try and provide foolproof security as we try and do whenever any such event takes place in the Valley." Though Mir did not elaborate on the security measures likely to be taken, sources said that the See Concert on Pg. 11

government is planning to sanitise the area in 3 km radius around the venue. Even the invitees will be required to report few kilometres before the venue, from where they will be ferried under security for the concert. Sources say the government has allocated a few crores for renovation of the garden as well as the roads leading to the venue. Separatists, including hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderate Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, have shown displeasure saying "Kashmir not peaceful enough to hold such concerts". After opposition from separatists, Kashmir's grand Mufti Bashir-ud-Din on Tuesday also appealed to German ambassador Michael Steiner to reconsider holding the Zubin Mehta concert in the Valley. The idea of the concert was floated about a year ago when Mehta visited Delhi and said he would "cancel all appointments to play in Kashmir". The announcement, however, came in early this month when the state tourism minister, Ghulam Ahmed Mir, flanked by officials from the German embassy made the announcement. The opposition started after the announcement. "Without any bias, we oppose any such move harmful for the Kashmir cause. It is our democratic right and none of the civilised nation can deny this fact," said Geelani. Mirwaiz soon joined the chorus. Speaking to Hindustan Times on Wednesday, he, however, softened his stand and said Hurriyat doesn't oppose but has just "put forward a different point of view". "There is no denying the fact that Kashmir is known for its music, culture, poetry and fine arts but such things are good only when there is peace. Kashmir is an active conflict zone, people are getting killed every day and there is tension on the border. Besides such things don't appeal to common Kashmiris," said Mirwaiz Umar. "We don't oppose it and never said will not let it happen, but are pointing forward a different point of view. If Germany wants to invest they can do it in health and education sectors," he added. Reiterating the separatists' stand, Mufti asked the German embassy to support education and healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir instead. Ironically, grand Mufti made news last month after a video showing him enjoying a musical evening went viral on internet. The opposition, however, has come as no surprise, for it was after he issued a decree against an all-girl Kashmiri band that led to the trio abandoning their musical pursuit. While restraining from giving any religious diktat on the concert, Mufti said, "I had decided not to comment on the forthcoming musical concert in Srinagar and leave the decision to the people whether they approve of such activities or not. Since Kashmir is a disputed area, the holding of such a concert would definitely send a wrong signal to the outside world." German ambassador Michael Steiner, however, had called it a cultural tribute to "Kashmir and its warm-hearted people". "September will not change the world. The event is being organised by the German embassy. The invitation will come from me and my wife. This is not an event related to tourism. I know the limits." "It will give them (Kashmiris) joy. Let the power of music play its part. This is not a solution to anything. This is not a peace concert. This is purely a cultural event," he added.

Eyewitnesses said that both the injured civilians were traveling in a Tavera coming from Islamabad to Srinagar. “Their vehicle came under heavy fire and they received bullets during the firing incident,” one of the eyewitnesses said. Sikhs to vote against Congress, NC: Raina Srinagar August 28: All Parties Sikh co- ordination committee Kashmir has decided to make ensure that no Sikh casts a vote for National Conference and Congress in the upcoming assembly elections of Jammu and Kashmir, if the Government fails to implement National Minority act in the State. According to KNS while addressing a press conference here at Lala Rukh APSCC's Chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said that the committee will launch a campaign and will ensure no Sikh are going to cast vote for the politicians of concern ruling parties in Jammu and Kashmir in the next upcoming assembly elections scheduled for 2014. Reacting on the statements of Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others on the musical concert by Zubin Mehta in Kashmir Raina while showing his support to Hurriyat Conference said the committee is also against the musical concert in Kashmir. Sikhs constitute a significant proportion of the electorate in eight assembly seats of Kashmir and 10 in Jammu division. Without mentioning the name of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), once Sikhs will not vote for politicians of National Conference and congress it is quite possible that both Parties would suffer heavily in the next upcoming assembly elections, he said. APSCC strongly condemns the State Government proposal of holding back National Minority act in the State and implementing State Minorities act on that place ignoring recommendations of Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh and of President Pranab Mukherjee for implementing the act in the State. "This has lead to alienation of Sikhs in the state as according to him Sikhs were the most suppressed community in the State. State Government has no excuse for not implementing National Minority Status in Jammu and Kashmir as all the cost for the act are being borne by centre Government", Jagmohan Added. If State Minority Act is implemented in State instead of National Minority Act there are chances that some fringe group may get added to the list of minorities in Jammu and Kashmir. Raina also said despite raising this issue with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah several times still there is no relief for them on this front. "Thousands of posts are vacant in Jammu and Kashmir but State Government is doing nothing to fill these posts not only among minorities but unemployment is even growing among the majority group as well", he added. Committee has urged the State Government for implementing the act in the State immediately otherwise Sikhs will launch a campaign against such politicians who are acting as stumbling blocks in the implementation of this act in the State. He also urged administration to revise the electoral rolls of those Sikhs who left valley during turmoil. He said revision of electoral rolls could not be banned just because one was compelled to leave the State and if he is now returning his electoral role it will not be revised.

Mehbooba supports focus development of Gujjar, Bakerwal communities Srinagar, August 28 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday said the large Gujjar community after having suffered centuries of neglect and exploitation need a focused and composite development plan to ensure their progress and decent life. Addressing a gathering of community representatives of Gujjars and Bakerwals at Peer-ki-Gali, on the historic Mughal road, she said while making efforts to give a push to the development of this most backward section of our society, it has to be ensured that their traditions and environment are preserved. Mehbooba said Gujjars are an important community of the state and their input to our economy and cultural variety has been immense, but unfortunately the benefits of progress have failed to reach them. These innocent people have always been exploited and used as a vote bank and audience for public meetings without ever trying to address their problems of survival, leave alone their issues of development. Senior party leader and former finance minister Tariq Hameed Karra, MLA Chaudhary Zulfiqar Ahmad, MLA Abdul Haq Khan, MLA Syed Basharat Bukhari, Chief Spokesperson & MLC Naeem Akhtar, party state secretary Zaffar iqbal Manhas, district president Mohammad Shafi Banday, Gujjar leader Zaffar Chaudhary, womens wing coordinator Anjum Fazilli, youth leaders Waheed Ur Rehman parra, Yawar Banday and Zubair Yousuf were also present and spoke on this occasion. Stressing the need for improving
education and health care facilities to Gujjar community, who are spread all over the state and living in far flung places, Mehbooba said the number of schemes, launched by the Government of India, for their focussed welfare, have in Jammu & Kashmir been derailed by the present government. The mobile schools and mobile dispensaries have almost become dysfunctional, leaving the children and other members of nomadic Gujjars without any access to basic education and health care. She said, similarly, the tribal sub plans, approved for the community, have generally been sabotaged by allocating funds on political considerations, which has resulted in frequent suspension of allotment of funds by Government of India. She said the tension and fear along the LoC and borders, which had ended following the ceasefire pact between India and Pakistan in 2003, has returned to haunt the people there among them is the larger section of Gujjar population. Mehbooba said even though the community had traditionally supported and voted for National Conference, but all key welfare majors, benefiting the community were taken when NC was out of power. She said the tribal status to the community was granted by Janata Dal led government in 1991 and the NC and Congress were not in power then. Similarly, mega projects like the Mughal road and the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, which are of special significances for Poonch and Rajouri regions having larger concentration of Gujjars, were
initiated by the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led government. In contrast to this, she said the present government has failed to construct the model schools sanctioned by the Government of India for tribal students at every district headquarter. “Similar is the fate of Gujjar Bakerwal hostels which are in a mess and the special scholarship schemes offered by the Govt of India to tribal students,” said Mehbooba. She said the wool and wool products which in the past were significant source of income for the community have suffered a slump in the market as a result of changed customer preferences. The wool board, which was supposed to support prices to sheep breeders, has ceased to function and the government needs to revive the market intervention in wool. Appealing the communi ty leaders to appreciate the difference between different parties, Mehbooba said it is high time that the people and especially those from Gujjar c o m m u n i t y, w h o h a v e b e e n forgotten for decades, assess the performance of NC its allies and the PDP. She said the party has clear vision about solving the problems of all sections of society including the more neglected Gujjars. She said the area opened up with the construction of Mughal road has immense potential for developing tourism. While doing so the party would ensure that young people from the community are provided appropriate skills and financial support to establish hospitality units and find dignified avenues of employment in their own environment and localities.

Organized Crime
D
emocracy means a government of the people by the people and for the people. People choose their representatives who in turn drive powers to rule. In a way the representatives are public servants to serve the public for their welfare. But in reality they serve themselves in the name of serving the masses. When the public representatives gain power, here takes birth the menace of corruption. The literal meaning of corruption is misuse of entrusted powers for private gains. It hurts the people who entrust powers to these representatives. Jammu & Kashmir is the second most corrupt state in the country. Here corruption is deep rooted in the system so much so that no work can be expected to be done without putting weight of cash or kind on the files or in common language “Chai Pani”. People too find corruption the most convenient way to get any work accomplished and avoid repeated visits to the offices. Public dealing departments are visibly most corrupt departments. For example one can get driving license by paying some booty to the agent without much of difficulty. In a way the unqualified and raw hands get the licenses which results in the mayhem that is witnessed on the roads in the shape of accidents in which precious lives are lost or crippled forever. For that reason grease the palms of lineman and consume electricity without paying much of the electricity dues. Corruption is now an organized crime where takers and payers are stake holders. Rates are fixed and the business is so smooth and regulated that healthy competition goes on between takers as well as payers. The corruption is not only rampant at the state level but on the national level also. One is pained to see the media reports on revelation of corrupt practices by politicians, bureaucrats, professionals and business tycoons. Now even the educational institutions are also in the race where lacs of rupees are extracted by way of capitation fee, building fee and what not for getting admission even into kindergarten what to talk of professional courses. We all know corruption has multidimensional consequences. It affects all the important organs of the society. Economy of the country is worst hit as the money accumulated by corrupt practices is hidden in different ways including depositing in foreign banks and is not invested properly with the apprehension of being caught. When Anna Hazare blew the bugle against corruption last year apparently everybody from rickshaw drivers to spiritual leaders and from labourers to actors backed him. But very soon the movement against corruption lost its sheen as many stories appeared in the media regarding corrupt practices by Anna Team. Eradication of corruption cannot be possible by leadership alone. The whole society has to rise above the occasion and follow the dictum of “our” instead of “my”. We ought to be honest first to ourselves than to society.

RAJOURI THROUGH THE AGES
ajouri remained the region of great importance in ancient times. During Mahabharta period, there was a kingdom known as Panchal Desha (the name of the King of this principality was Panchal Naresh) whose daughter "Draupti" was married with five Panduas. Some Historians identified Panchal Desha as the region falls in-between Peer-Panchal range of mountains. Rajouri is located in the centreof this region. Therefore, it appears that Rajouri was also a part of the Kingdom of Panchal Naresha. The great Rishi and Worrier "Dravan" of Mahabharat was also hailing from this place. He was not only a Saint, but Worrier also and taught war tactics to Panduas as well as Kourvas. Lateron, the Worrier tribe Drava derived its name from Dravan. Drava tribe was habitating in Rajouri area. As per S.N. Keshwani, in the beginning of 4th Century BC, there was a principality in the Southern side of Panchal range of mountains with its capital at Rajouri. At the time of Alexander's invasion on Hazara, the principality of Porus in 326 BC, the region between Chenab and Jhelum was known as Drava-Abisara after the name of two tribes Drava and Abisara. Dravas were inhabiting Rajouri area while the Abisaras were residing in Poonch area. The principality Drava Abisara was comprised of present Poonch, Kotii, Rajour (Rajouri) and some parts of Bhimber upto Dhangalla. It was an independent principality and the boundary of Drava-Abisara was touching the border of the Kingdom of Raj a Porus i.e. the Hazara. The name of the Raj a of Drava Abisara at the time of Alexandra's invasion was Budh-Hister who remained neutral at the time of war which took place between Raja Porus and Alexandra. Historians say that Porus was defeated because his ally the King of Drava Abisara did not helped him at the time of war as promised by him. In Maury an period, the town of Rajouri was a great trading centre. The renowned Historian Mr. Belley had located a coin of First Century AD which was kept in Lahore Museum. As per this coin, the name of the capital of Drava Abisara was "DravaAbisar Prasta" and the name of the Ruler of this principality was Sevasena. Renowned Research Scholar Moti Lai Saki in one of his article had identified the town Abisar Prasta with the present Rajouri town. The Chinees Traveller Huen Tsong visited
Rajouri in 633 AD. When he was on the way to Kashmir. He passed some days at Rajouri. He wrote in his book "THE TRAVELLER OF YANGSU" the name of Rajouri as Holo-She-Polo, Gorg. Cunigum, the Author of History of Punjab) had identified Holo-She-Polo as present Rajouri in his book "THE ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY OF INDIA". Huen Tsong wrote that the climate of this region is hot, people are of blackish colour, they believe in Hinduism and this region is a part of Kingdom of Kashmir. Shri Moti Lai Saki wrote in one of his article that in the beginning of 7th Century AD, the Khasha tribes started pouring in Drava-Abisar area and ultimately, they over-powered the local tribes and established their own principalities in this area. Stien, the Commentator of Rajtringni Kelhan had written in one of his note that the native place of Khasha tribe was between Banshala (present Banihal) and Rajpuri (Rajouri). Khasha were so brave that they had not only established their principalities in Drava-Abisara but also captured Kashmir, Some of the Historians go upto the extent that the name of Kashmir has been derived from Khasha Tribe as Khashmar, which changed from Khashmar to Kashmir with the passage of time. With the entrance of Khashas in Drava-Abisara, this region was divided into three principalities in the beginning of 10th Century AD i.e. Loharkote (present Poonch), Kalanjer (Kotli) and Rajpuri (Rajouri). Kelhen wrote in Rajtringni that in 11th Century AD, Sultan Mehmood Gaznavi made swift attack on the Northern gate way India which was at that time ruled by Paul Shahi Rajas. No doubt that Shahi Rajas defended the Northern India (which was considered as a door of India) for pretty long time but Shahi Rajas were not united. Therefore, they could not face the challenge of Sultan Mehmood. One-byone, these Shahi Rajas got crushing defeats in the hand of Mehmood Gaznavi. The famous Shahi Raja Jai Paul was defeated in 1000 AD near Lahore, Anand Paul in 1008 AD in salt range and Trilochan Paul in 1014 AD near Toshi River (Poonch River). After getting defeat, these Paul Shahi Rajas left their native places and took refuge in Kashmir which was at that time governed by Queen Didda and Raja Singram Pala. They were very intelligent Rulers. They thought that if they will allow these Shahi Rajas to settle in Kashmir, there was
apprehension of revolt against the Kashmir regime. Therefore, they motivated these Shahi Paul Rajas to establish their principalities in the outer-hills of Panchal Range on the plea that they have already fought a tough battle against Mehmood Gaznavi and they can guide and defend the last Hindu Kingdom in the Northern India from Mehmood Gaznavi by stationing on the border. In these circumstances, Trilochan Paul was settled at Loharkote (Poonch) and the remaining Paul Shahi Rajas and Raj Kumars settled in Rajouri area. Their Sardar "Prithavi Paul" was designated as the Raja of this area and was accepted as an Independent Ruler by the Kashmir Darbar. Since Raja Prithavi Paul along with other Raj Kumars and Darbaries had shifted to Rajouri, therefore, Prithavi Paul laid the foundation stone of Paul Shahi Rajas in this area and also named his principality as "Rajas-Puri" (the land of Kings). As per Rajtringni of Kelhan, Rajouri emerged as a principality around 1003 AD. The First Ruler Raja Prithavi Paul ruled Rajouri upto 1035 AD. During this very period, Sultan Mehmood Gaznavi made an attempt to capture Kashmir first in 1015 AD and then in 1021 AD. He started aggression from Loharkote (Poonch side) and laid the seige of the Fort. But he could not defeat Trilochan Paul the defender of Loharkote. Then he moved towards Rajouri area and started aggression from Girjan side on Kashmir. But he faced resentment at Girjan from Raja Prithavi Paul of Rajouri and ultimately, Mehmood was compelled to repulse back towards Gazni. By this way, Prithavi Paul defended Kashmir from the aggression of Mehmood in 1021 AD. But it is also fact that Sultan Mehmood Gaznavi had captured large part of Rajouri area and one Paul Shahi Sardar namely Janki Paul Shahi became the ally of Mehmood Gaznavi during his aggression on Kashmir and he worked as guide for the forces of Sultan Mehmood Gaznavi at the time of his unsuccessful attack on Kashmir. It appears that Raj a Prithavi Paul remained confined in Girjan area during the aggression of Gaznavi and when Gaznavi returned to Gazni without concurring Kashmir, Raja Prithavi Paul again came to Rajouri and continued governing this principality upto 1035 AD. After the death of Raja Prithavi Paul, his son Sangram Paul became the Ruler of Rajouri in 1035 AD and ruled the principal-
ity upto 1063 AD. Then his son Raja Som Paul became the Raja who governed the area upto 1113 AD. After the death of Som Paul, Bhoo Paul became the Raja of Rajouri who ruled the principality upto 1164 AD and finally, Amna Paul became the Raja of Rajouri in 1164 AD who continued governing the area upto 1194 AD. During this very period of Paul Shahi Raja Sangram Paul of Rajouri had defended his principality when Raja Harsh of Kashmir attacked Rajouri in 1089 AD. Sangram Paul fought so bravely that Raja Harsh was compelled to retreat back to Kashmir from Prithavi Paul Fort of Rajouri without capturing Rajouritown. In 1097 AD, when King Harsh of Kashmir called a council of Rulers of neighbouring states, the Raja of Rajouri also participated in this conference. In 1036 AD, Albruni the Writer of "Kitab-Ul-Hind" visited Rajouri with Sultan Masood, (the son of Sultan Mehmood). He wrote in his book the name of this place as "Rajavari" and described that Muslim Traders are visiting Rajouri for business purpose and it was the farthest place where Muslim Merchants are visiting. Statement of Albruni reveals that the Raja of Rajouri was having cordial relation with Sultan Masood. As per Mirza Zaffar Ullah Khan, the writer of Tareekh-e-Rajgan-e-Rajour,in the 4th quarter of 12th Century, Amna Paul was the Raja of Rajouri. During his period, NoorUd-Din alias Raja Neel Sinha who was the King of Kalanoor principality in Punjab had got defeat from Sultan Shahabu Din Gori, accepted Islam and took his name as Noor-Ud-Din. But the habitants of Kalanoor, did not accept him as Raja after his conversion to Islam and compelled him to leave the principality. Noor-Ud-Din along with his family started his journey towards Kashmir and camped at Barmandal near Tatapani in Kalakote area. Here he came to know about the principality of Rajouri. He decided to settle at Rajouri and reached Rajouri, met Raja Amna Paul who employed him in his Darbar and later on, nominated him as a Prime Minister of Rajouri. After some time, Noor-Ud-Din revolted against Raj a Amna Paul of Rajouri in 1194 AD killed him and his eighteen sons and declare himself as Raja of Rajouri. He was an able Administrator and established his position in the principality in very short period reconstructed Rajouri town. To be Continued.........

ayasree and her friends were standing in a group around their science teacher, who was explaining to them about the Foucault’s pendulum that attracts the immediate attention of anyone who enters the Regional Science Centre that started functioning not long back in Coimbatore. Jayasree, a Plus 1 student said that the visit to the centre has made science come alive to herself and her friends. Foucault’s Pendulum, named after the French physicist Leon Foucoult, is a simple device conceived as an experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the earth. While it had long been known that the earth rotated, the introduction of the Foucault pendulum in 1851 was the first simple proof of the rotation in an easy-to-see experiment. For Ilavarasan, the Fun Science gallery and its interactive exhibits were interesting to the core. Jayashekhar, his father who was with him, said that the Centre was bringing the old adage into practice- you remember best what who learn by doing! Experience and experiment based learning are the best ways to understand science. When science is learned is this manner, one is able to under stand better the basic concepts and this understanding will engender in students a better appreciation and liking for science. The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) is the apex body for science centres functioning under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. How to keep anxiety in check
Control your anxiety before it gets out of hand with these minor tweaks to your life Anxiety is something we all experience from time to time — from tension before an exam or interview to feeling butterflies in our stomachs on a first date. And a little anxiety can actually be useful. Feeling nervous can get the adrenalin pumping and make you more alert. But it's when short-term anxiety becomes a more long-term condition that problems start.Chronic anxiety can be crippling and may lead to an inability to concentrate, constant nausea, palpitations and insomnia. It can also cause other conditions such as depression and even agoraphobia. The important thing to remember about controlling anxiety is quickly conquering it before it gets out of hand — which means managing your stress well. Choose low GI foods Your brain needs a steady supply of glucose to enable it to function properly. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect the brain, leading to mood swings, anxiety and even panic attacks. So try to eat foods that have a low GI
(glycaemic index) such as multigrain bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes, carrots and bananas. Increase vitamin B intake An adequate intake of this vitamin is essential for a healthy nervous system. All B vitamins are involved in the control of tryptophan, an amino acid used to make the chemical serotonin, that helps regulate mood. A balanced diet containing meat, fish, eggs, dairy and green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds should supply enough Vitamin B. But if you are not getting enough, take Vitamin B supplements. Limit your alcohol intake If you are stressed, anxious or depressed, it may be tempting to drown your sorrows with a stiff drink as alcohol can initially make you feel calmer. A recent study suggested people suffering from anxiety were likely to drink heavily. But if you suffer from anxietyrelated disorders, including depression, you should consider limiting your alcohol intake as it affects anxietyreducing neurotransmitters. Also, once the alcohol wears off, you may be left feeling more anxious because alcohol has a depressant effect. Keep a stress diary
Over the next few weeks, note which situations, times, places and people make you stressed. Once you have identified these, think about each one and ask yourself 'Can I avoid it?'. For example, if you find that driving to work is stressful, perhaps you can avoid it by finishing work a bit earlier or later, or by car-sharing with a colleague. Slow down Many of us are living our lives at a faster pace, perhaps juggling a fulltime job with a relationship, family commitments and a social life. As a result, we feel a constant sense of urgency in our daily lives. This endless feeling of pressure fuels our impatience when we have to wait in a queue or traffic jam, or when the bus or train is late. Instead of stressing about delays, see them as opportunities for welcome thinking or reading. Drink plenty of water Your brain needs sufficient water to function properly. Even mild dehydration can affect mental well-being. Symptoms of dehydration include restlessness and irritability.
Avoid these foods to avoid constipation
Constipation is an uncomfortable condition. Previously, we covered the foods that you must eat on a regular basis to tackle constipation. On the other side of the healthy-unhealthy food spectrum, there are also some popular foods that you should avoid if you want to stay away from constipation. We give you 5 foods to exclude from your diet. Processed food: Whether it is frozen foods or burgers and pizzas, it is going to make your mornings hard to get through, literally. When food is preserved and ready to eat, vital nutrients are drained out, plus the ingredients used are cheap. For example, all purpose flour or maida is used practically in all pizzas, breads and instant noodles. Bottomline: Processed food has less fiber hence they linger in your system causing discomfort. Bakery goodies: Nankhatais, kharis and tea biscuits are rich in sugar and
fat. They may go well with tea and coffee, but lack fiber. But there's a solution to these good old treats, increase your fiber intake, and balance it out. Bottomline: Sugar may go straight to your thigh, but it can also be the cause of constipation. Red Meat without supplementing meals with vegetables: If you consume pork or beef regularly, without veggies on the side, you may have already experienced constipation. Make it a habit to accompany this precious chunk of meat with salad, cooked vegetables, and whole grain cereal; something that is rich in fiber. Bottomline: Guess how long it takes to digest meat? No, you're wrong, it takes 90 hours to partially digest meat. Caffeine: So no one can give up coffee, black tea and colas. They give you the much needed buzz to start
your day and keep you going through strenuous meetings, commutes, and just about everything else. Unhealthy dependency aside, caffeine dehydrates the human body and dehydration is one of the main causes of constipation. Bottomline: If you're addicted to caffeine, it's better to cut down and supplement it with food rich in fiber. Oily food: Chips and fast foods are tempting, even for those who are determined to eat healthy. But the more oily and salty your food is, the higher your chances of developing some digestive health issues as you cross over from your 20s to the 30s. Foods that are deep fried and soaked in oil like French fries slows down the digestive process. Bottomline: Fight your cravings and every time you feel tempted to order a round of French fries make sure you drink enough water and eat enough veggies before or after.
Celebrate health with tomatoes Smoking may lead to Indulge in tomatoes as they have great health value Tomatoes are now hot-favourites thanks to the much-talked about Tomato Festival in Spain as shown in the movie Zindagi Milegi Na Dobaara. But take a break from your favorite actors soaking in the ‘tomato fun.’ It’s time to know the health benefits of this rich easily available vegetable. Anti-oxidant: Tomatoes contain a lot of vitamins A and C, mostly because of beta-carotene, and these vitamins act as an anti-oxidant, working to neutralize dangerous free radicals in the blood stream. Free radicals in the body can be flushed out with high levels of Lycopene, and the tomato is so amply loaded with this vital anti-oxidant that it actually derives its rich redness from the nutrient. These dangerous free radicals can cause cell damage. Also, remember that cooking destroys much of vitamin C, so stick to raw tomatoes for these benefits. So, do remember
to carry a tomato-cucumber sandwich in your tiffin box. Vision: Because of all that vitamin A, tomatoes are also an excellent food to help improve your vision. This also means tomatoes can help your eyes be better about night blindness. Cancer: Various studies have shown that because of all that lycopene in tomatoes, the red fruit helps to lessen the chances of prostate cancer in men, and also reduces the chance of stomach cancer and colorectal cancer. Lycopene is considered somewhat of a natural miracle anti-oxidant that may help to stop the growth of cancer cells. And, interestingly enough, cooked tomatoes produce more lycopene than do raw tomatoes, so enjoy that tomato soup! Heart troubles: Due to potassium and vitamin B, tomatoes help to lower blood pressure and to lower high cholesterol levels. This, in turn, could help prevent
ovarian cancer
strokes, heart attack and other potentially life-threatening heart problems. Skin care: Because of high amounts of lycopene, tomatoes are excellent for skin care. Make sure the inside of the tomato skins are against your skin, and let this be there for at least 10 minutes. Then wash off. You face will be cleaner and give a shiny look.
Stretch your way to fitness
Hair: Remember all that vitamin A in tomatoes? Well, it’s good for keeping y o u r h a i r str o ng and sh i ny , a nd i ts al so good f o r y o u r e y e s, te e th , skin and bo ne s. demographic and personal characteristics which were taken into account, including body-mass index, use of alcohol, use of oral contraceptives and menopausal hormone therapy. Binns said more research was needed to understand how smoking stimulated the creation of mucinoid tumours, but stressed the first step in prevention was for women to quit cigarettes. "While giving up smoking is the best advice, we did find evidence that drinking green tea, breastfeeding, eating fruit and vegetables, getting regular exercise and avoiding obesity were also beneficial," he said.
How diabetes links to leg and feet problems Diabetes can invite complications if proper personal care, fitness and diet are not followed. Today, we take a look at serious repercussions of diabetes on leg problems. Legs, especially the feet, receive far less blood compared to other parts of the body, and for diabetics this could spell foot trouble. Dr. Sanjeev Bhambani, Diabetes and Endocrinologist at Moolchand Medcity gives you a step-by-step rundown on this grave issue.
How is diabetes linked to feet and leg problems?
Dr. Sanjeev says, "Foot problems in diabetics result from poor circulation, nerve damage and decreased resistance to infection. High blood sugar level over a long period may affect blood vessels and nerves. There are various conditions that affect people with diabetes that may result in leg and foot problems." Willingly or cribbing, all of us tend to squeeze in some exercise in our daily routine. But we are lazy enough to skip the most important part of it- stretches. According to studies, stretches are vital in our daily workout and equally important if not more, than the actual exercise. Harbouring a capacity to leave one unfit for exercise if avoided continually, stretches prove extremely beneficial for our good health. If done properly, stretches are known to reduce muscle soreness to a large extent. They affect the body's flexibility which plays an important role in deciding our strength and stamina. They also affect our swiftness or speed level. While it is necessary to do a whole body stretch, individual muscle stretches loosen up every muscle that has been worked upon. Quadriceps, hamstring, calves, biceps, triceps, all need their share of stretch. Stretching should be a gradual process and should not be done in a hurry. If done too quickly, they can cause the muscle to contract. To avoid this, one can include stretches in-between the training after the exercise of each muscle group instead of keeping it as the final act. When the sweet burning sensation while stretching is a pleasurable experience you know you are on the right track. The tightening of muscles during exercise also affects the mobility of the joints and stretching helps in relieving them. The correct holding time of a stretch is the key to achieve the required effect. An average time of 30 seconds, is what is recommended by doctors. But in case of discomfort, one has to immediately stop pushing oneself out of limits. Another important benefit is that stretches prolong one's exercise age. As stretches play a major role in saving one from injuries, they reduce the rate of degeneration of muscles and hence keep one fit to exercise for long. So, do your stretches properly and be fitter
Scientists have for the first time linked smoking with ovarian cancer - the second most commonly diagnosed gynaecological cancer in Australia with a five-year survival rate of only 40 per cent. Andy Lee and Colin Binns, both professors from the Curtin University's School of Public Health, took part as members of the Collaborative Group on Epidemiological Studies of Ovarian Cancer based at Oxford University and funded by UK Cancer research. Their work involved the completion of two studies in China, which were fed into a pool of data totalling 28,114 women with, and 94,942 women without, ovarian cancer, the journal Lancet Oncology reported. "Previously there was only a weak link between smoking and ovarian cancer, coming from a paper in 2009. This new analysis firmly establishes that relationship for one particular type of ovarian cancer, mucinoid tumours, which account for about 15 percent of the total of all ovarian cancers," Binns said, according to a university statement. Outcomes were consistent along 13 socio-
Diabetic neuropathy
"Diabetes causes damage to the nerves in the feet and legs. Generally, injuries remain unnoticed and cause sharp pain in the feet commonly known as diabetic foot," says the Doctor.
Peripheral vascular disease
"Elevated blood sugar levels over time affect the circulation and blood flow. This may cause ulcer and gangrene."
How about the link between morbid obesity and diabetes?
This is a question that has several obese people worried; Dr. Sanjeev makes the link between obesity and diabetes: "Obesity is defined as having a BMI greater than 27 (as per Indian
body structure). Approximately two-thirds of adults with Type 2 diabetes are obese. Diabetics are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, and obesity further increases this risk. Obesity also increases other diabetes complications including endstage kidney disease. Other complications may include sleep apnea syndrome, arthritis and fatty liver disease."
Some stats on the cases of diabetes and limb amputations...
The picture is unflattering; here's what the diabetologist reveals, "All over the world in every 30 seconds, a leg is lost to due to diabetes. 15% of the total diabetic population develops foot ulcers. All over, 85% of all diabetes-related amputations are preceded by foot ulcers. Thus it is advisable that patients should daily inspect their feet and consult the doctor as soon as they find an ulcer or an infection in the foot."
What are the signs of tissue and skin damage?
He says, "In diabetic patients blood glucose is high and body loses fluid. Due to insufficient fluid skin gets dry. Dry skin tends to crack or split more easily and wounds heal more slowly in diabetics. Thus skin conditions should be treated as soon they're noticed, to prevent them." He breaks it down further, "There are various signs of tissue and skin damage, which can be categorized as: Dry skin is one of the most common symptoms among diabetes due to loss of body fluid and
frequent urination. Itchy skin could be another prior symptom which can be triggered by poor blood flow. Itching can be confined to one spot or may occur in many parts of the body especially in lower legs and feet. Digital sclerosis due to excess production of collagen among Type 1 diabetic patient results in waxy, tight skin on toes, fingers and hands. Dryness, burning, numbness and skin ulcers could be due to neuropathy when nerves are damaged. Patient suffers from pain in the lower extremities, burning and numbness. As a result, nerves in the legs and feet may not release sweat which is required to keep skin soft and moist." At what stage must one consult a specialist? "One should immediately consult a specialist if he/she experiences any of the following symptoms: - Changes in skin color - Swelling in the foot or ankle - Pain in the legs - Open sores on the feet that are slow to heal or are draining - Toenails with fungus infection - Corns or calluses - Dry cracks in the skin

India condemns Chinese army for allowing Myanmar’s army into India
New Delhi. Indian government has reacted strongly to the news of Myanmar’s army entering India and setting up camps in Manipur. As always, they have condemned. But this time, the condemnation is unique, because instead of condemning Myanmar, the government has condemned China. Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement condemning the Chinese army for not taking any action against the intruding Myanmar army. “Were these guys sleeping?” an angry India asks. “What is the use of letting Chinese army into our territory if they are not going to protect North-East India from external threats? If we just wanted some guys to sit idle there then we could have deployed government babus on the border and not ceded the territory to China,” fumed an MEA spokesperson. He went on to add, “Once we allowed the Chinese to set up camps, we were certain that they will protect this territory against any other threat, but I guess they are as useless as us. We are going to pass our displeasure to the Chinese ambassador in Delhi.” When we mentioned that Chinese soldiers had camped in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and Myan-
mar’s army has intruded in the state of Manipur, he replied, “Arey yaar, what are Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur? North-east India is a single state, no?” We thought about correcting him for a moment before thinking better of it as he looked very angry and we didn’t want to invite his wrath. Defense ministry has not issued any statement on this incursion yet as Defense minister and Army spokesman were busy comparing notes to ensure that they don’t end up giving out different versions of the events. We approached the home ministry for Mr. Shinde’s reaction to this intrusion on Indian Territory but we were turned away by the guard who told

The current account deficit is sure to increase, given that India imports over 80% of its oil. New Delhi, which had seen oil prices fall from $ 111 to $ 101 a barrel from January to May this year, had hoped this trend would continue, easing the trade deficit.Syria, Libya and other political uncertainties have turned this trend around. The US, the UK and France have made it clear they believe the Assad government was behind the deadly chemical weapons attack in Damascus. AP PhotoAt Rs. 7000, and the figure is likely to increase as both rupee and oil will work against India in the coming days, the oil subsidy bill for the government will jump to Rs. 1300 billion for fiscal year 2013-14, roughly double what the Union budget had prepared for. It’s all connected: why war in Syria may hurt you in India
A possible Western military intervention in Syria is primarily a cause of concern for India because of its impact on global oil prices. Just US secretary of state John Kerry’s talk that the suspected chemical weapons attack that has brought things to ahead, caused Brent prices to jump $ 2.80, reaching a six-month high of over $ 117 a barrel. As the threat of war rises, oil prices are expected to increase in tandem Dread grips Damascus as US strike countdown begins This will make it even more difficult for the Indian government to control the country’s current account deficit and, because India’s diesel subsidies, the government’s fiscal deficit. Finance minister P Chidambaram had on Tuesday in Parliament listed bringing both deficits to heel as part of his 10-point plan to revive the Indian economy. The combination of a weakening rupee and rising oil prices means an imported barrel of oil now costs India Rs. 7000. It cost only Rs. 5,500 a barrel in April.

has what little it did produce has shrunk to nothing. Damascus presently survives on oil provided by Iran. The fear is that the Syrian conflagration could spread into Iraq, possibly throw Iran into conflict with the US, and otherwise draw in many of the countries in the region. These countries are large oil-producers. Iraq, for example, is now OPEC’s second-largest oil supplier and the second-largest source of crude for India. Sunni extremists, some allied with Al Qaeda, have been crossing from Iraq to fight in Syria. The Shia-dominated government of Iraq, on the other hand, is supportive of the embattled Shia minority regime in Syria. The head of the UN mission in Baghdad recently warned of the fighting in Syria and the Shia-Sunni conflict in central Iraq that the “battlefields are merging into one conflict.” No one is quite certain where oil prices will go, but this reflects the uncertainty of the dimensions of a Syrian conflict. US President Barack Obama, say sources in Washington, would prefer to avoid any intervention and, at best, limit himself to missile and airstrikes.

To solve this problem, the parents of the girl accompanied her from Chhindwara to Jodhpur to take her to Asaram Bapu,” Sai said, to his supporters in Rajkot.
