PDP demands proper rehabilitation of Kishtwar violence affected families Terms judicial probe as eyewash to hide truth

Jammu, August 29: Demanding proper rehabilitation of the violence affected families of Kishtwar and adjoining areas, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday termed that the judicial probe announced by the state government to the investigate the unfortunate incident of August 9 an eyewash to hide the truth. In a statement to KNS the party observed that earlier similar investigations were announced by the present coalition government but nothing concrete emerge from such inquiries. In

meeting of senior party activists of UdhampurDoda Lok Sabha segment, which was held under the chairmanship of PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the leaders recounted that since formation of this coalition government in January 2009, a numbers of inquiries have been announced from time to time ‘but all such investigations ultimately proved as deceit tactics on the part of the state government to shield the real culprits.’ The party strongly demanded that instead of indulged to customary exercises on announc-

ing inquiry, the state government should take strict action against the real culprits responsible for violence to restore confidence among people. Expressing their anguish over loss of precious human lives and properties in Kishtwar violence, PDP demanded that all the affected families should be rehabilitated completely. The party leaders exhorted workers to strengthen communal harmony and brotherhood in the region. PDP leaders said that failure of the State Government to protect lives of innocent people has badly shattered faith

NHPC illegally, unconstitutionally generating electricity Srinagar, August 29: The National Hydro Power Project (NHPC) is “illegally and unconstitutionally” generating electricity from the power projects under its execution in Kashmir, an RTI filed by a Kashmiri social activist has revealed. The applicant, Tufail Khalid had in 2009 filed an RTI seeking information on the following points: (1) Agreement executed by J&K Government with NHPC in respect of various power projects with

water capacity in each dam of these projects. (2) How much share the state government is getting from the agreement

entered with GoI. (3) How many agreements entered with NHPC have lapsed? As stipulated, the J&K State Information Commission asked the J&K State Power Development

Department to furnish the complete details of the agreements to the information seeker—Tufail Khalid. What was shocking to know in the light of information sought, Tufail said was that J&K government has signed MoU on 7 projects—out of the total 14 handed over to NHPC during the regime of then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah in 2000— and has not entered into any agreement on the projects executed by NHPC currently See NHPC on Pg. 11

IM Co-Founder Yasin Congress to grab Bhatkal Arrested Chairmanship of KAHDC: Soz

New Delhi, August 29:

Top Indian Mujahideen leader Yasin Bhatkal was nabbed from the Indo-Nepal border on Wednesday night, apparently giving India a bigger catch than Lashkar-e-Taiba bomb maker Abdul Karim Tunda this month. Bhatkal, wanted in around 40 blast cases and carrying a reward of Rs. 35 lakh, is the biggest IM leader ever arrested and security agen-

cies are hopeful of gaining crucial information on the outfit that was designated a militant group in 2010. On the run for over five years in several countries including Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Bhatkal (30) was held along with his associate Asadullah Akhtar aka Haddi (26) while crossing into India at Raxaul Nahar Chowk (around 100 km from Patna) opposite Birgunj town See Arrested on Pg. 11

reversed by the present dispensation through its ‘misdeeds and failures.’ Coming down heavily on state government headed by Omar Abdullah, PDP leaders regretted that almost four months have been passed after devastating earthquake had rocked Chenab Valley region ‘but nothing has been done to rehabilitate the affected families.’ They expressed serious concern over mounting woes of those families whose houses were damaged in the tremor. “It is very unfortunate that present government has been brazenly indulged into cheap politics on human tragedies in earthquake in Chenab Valley region but on ground no step has been taken so far to provide relief to the affected families,” they said and demanded that a comprehensive package should be given to the affected families. The Party demanded that all the affected families should he provided shelter before commencement of winter. Expressing grave concern over loss of lives and properties in devastating rains and flash floods, party asked the State Government to immediate constitute special teams to assess the loss and release some immediate relief to the victims. Party pointed out that hundreds of houses were collapsed and a number of people have lost their lives. Party leaders said that incessant rains have rendered scores of people homeless and huge chunk of agriculture land has been washed away in floods. While emphasizing on the need of deputing special teams on the affected areas to assess the losses, party demanded that relief and rehabilitation operation should be started on warfooting. in Kashmir. “There is a lot of difference between a MoU and agreement…..i had sought details of the agreements J&K government entered with GoI…but the information furnished by PDD clearly states that no agreement has been entered into on Uri-1, Salal and Dulhasti etc power projects,” Tufail said. He added that the PIO JKSPDC in his reply vide his letter dated 28.03.2013 ( No.PDD/Genl14/ 2013/RTI) stated that the agreements for the said projects—save Baglihar which is a state sector project— have been executed between J&K govt. and GoI. The noted social activist said that the letter further stated that a photocopy of the MoU of July 2000 signed lies with JKSPDC-detailing about the 7 projects transferred to NHPC. “The letter clearly stated that no information regarding the agreement entered into Uri-1 (generating (350 MW), Dulhasti and Salal is available with the JKSPDC office,” Tufail revealed. However, the social activist adds that the hair-raising question the JKSPDC response raises is barring the MoU entered into seven projects—Kishanganga HEP, Uri II, Bursar, Sewa II, Pakal Dul, Nimoo Bazgo, Chutak—no separate agreements stands entered with NHPC for the other 7 power projects being executed by it. The JKSPDC response to the RTI, Tufail reveals clearly states that no agreement with NHPC exists on the projects being executed by it in Kashmir. The young social activist informs that NHPC earns Rs 2300 crores per day from the power projects it executes in Kashmir. “Out of the total 10,000 MWs NHPC generates across India, 5,400 MWs are generated in Kashmir only. When the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had handed over the 14 projects to GoI in 2000 nothing was agreed onto as how the state, particularly, Kashmir would benefit out of it,” he said. “…..there is no mention of the J&K’s share from the revenues generated by NHPC from our water resources. What was decided on that 12% of the generated electricity during summers and 15 percent during winters would be supplied free of cost to the state,” informsTufail while adding that NHPC doesn’t even pay the royalty and towards the state government. Under such circumstances, he said, “it looks improbable that NHPC would pay the state government its share and the compensation from the from the power projects executed by it here. While criticizing Dr. Farooq Abdullah for allowing NHPC to loot the water resources in J&K, Tufail even had a panning for Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Omar Abdullah He said that despite being powerful enough to retrieve the power projects at the stroke of their pens, these chief ministers are remaining silent to appease their masters at the Centre.

tell you with authority that Congress is emerging as a vibrant force in the State,” Soz said. Out of 26 seats Congress bagged 12, National Conference 11 while independent candidates won three seats. Sources told CNS that National Conference is leaving no stone unturned to garner the support of these three independent candidates. However, Soz claimed that all the three independent candidates have expressed their willingness to support Congress. “It would a biggest achievement for the party to grab the coveted post of Chairmanship of KAHDC,” Soz said.

Arrested.........

of Nepal. “The arrest was carried out following a tip-off from central agencies and with the help of the National Investigation Agency (NIA),” Bihar additional director general of police (headquarters) Rabindra Kumar said in Patna on Thursday. Bhatkal and his accomplices had been using the 750-km porous border of Bihar with Nepal to enter and exit the country in the last six months. The pattern was followed by the NIA and painstakingly put together, leading to the arrest, according to the police. Hailing from Bhatkal town in Karnataka, the IM leader hit the spotlight after the 2008 Delhi serial blasts in which 30 people were killed. He is suspected to be the mastermind of these five blasts as well as the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune that killed 17 and the Dilsukhnagar blasts in

Daily Hyberabad in February that also killed 17. He is also suspected to have played an active role in the 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts in which 187 people were killed. Former home secretary RK Singh said Bhatkal had been the most active militant in the IM. “He himself was a bomb planter, organiser and was one of the most potent militants in that (IM) stable. We have been after him. Catching him, therefore, I think, is a great success.” Singh added Bhatkal gave security agencies the slip at least twice earlier. “Once it was said he was arrested in Kolkata but they (security agencies) did not have his identity and he managed to get bail. On another occasion, our agencies had worked out a plan but he managed to give the slip.” Bhatkal and Akhtar were produced before a court in Motihari and are to be brought to Delhi. This is the second major breakthrough for Indian agencies after the arrest of LeT bomb expert Abdul Karim Tunda on August 16.

A long road ahead

H

aving nominated Yashpal Sharma as candidate for Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in April-May 2014, Peoples Democratic Party has blown the begul for the ensuing parliamentary elections. Other major political parties like National Conference, Congress and BJP are yet to decide their candidatures for Lok Sabha elections-2014, but almost all the parties have started gearing up to create an atmosphere of elections by organizing, strengthening their cadres and in some cases have started drawing the attention of the voters towards themselves by arranging public meetings, addressing public rallies in different parts of the state and alluring voters by their flippant, crispy, saucy and spicy speeches. The major political parties at the national level are also busy in chalking out the future strategies to grab large chunk of voters towards itself. Recently Congress in its “Chintin Shivir” held at Jaipur put extra emphasis on participation of women voters who constitute at least half of the voters list. This important component cannot be ignored. The UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi opened her inaugural speech with the suggestions of making women fully empowered in all spheres of life whether social, economical or political. She talked about the discriminatory attitude of male members of the family and pledged to work against discrimination by abolishing it from the roots. The main slogan which emerged from this “Chintin Shivir” was- “Pehlay Nari Ka Sammaan, Phir Bharat Nirman” – “respect the women, build the nation”. The kind of treatment and atrocities are being committed on women folk these days, the way they are not safe and secure within four walls of the house or outside the house, it is natural that women voters would like to stand up and demand justice. The Delhi gang rape incident and thereafter continuous flow of news regarding rapes and other kinds of atrocities are enough to stir up the conscience of women who other than basic infrastructural facilities would like to demand their security and self dignity at first instance. Almost all the political parties would like to work on this issue. With new innovations in information technology and fast modes of communication, the world has altogether changed. Now the appeasement policies being adopted by various political parties to woe the women voters will not work. Earlier women would follow the dictates of their male members of their family, vote for the candidate whom the male members would decide. But now time has changed. Women today are well conscious of the value of their votes and by all means, they should be. The political parties cannot afford to ignore them as they are integral and important part of the election process. Though it is a fact, till now their views were not taken very seriously. If some change is to be brought in the society, a due respect and space has to be allotted for women voters otherwise the democratic process will get a big jolt. Women participation in the election process has to be increased and for this, women as a whole have to come forward and take their share rather snatch it from the clutches of male dominated society otherwise they will continue to suffer. No doubt it is a long road to tread upon but the moment the women voters stand united and raise their voices against the treatment meted to them, there is no doubt that they will definitely succeed in their mission. They snub away the small appeasement tactics normally used by political parties like giving away little gifts like Sarees, pressure cookers, sewing machines, blanket etc in lieu of votes. The time has come that they should use their minds and considering the value of their votes should exercise their franchise in favour of candidates who may prove saviours of their rights and dignity.

RAJOURI THROUGH THE AGES

e was having good relation with Raja Yesh Paul of Jammu. Raja Noor-Ud-Din died in 1219 AD. After that, Raja Bhava-Ud-Din alias Bhag Sinha (1219-1252 AD), Raja Anwar Khan alias Arun Sinha (1252-1264 AD), Raja Hebat Khan alias Hebat Sinha (1264-1289 AD), Raja Sardar Khan alias Reen Sinha (12891318 AD), Raja Shah Sawar Khan alias Sansar Sinha (1318-1351 AD), Raja Daulat Khan alias Daulat Sinha (1351-1378 AD), Raj a Shah Zaman Khan alias Jag Sinha (1378-1412 AD), Raja Shahabudin alias Sakar Sinha(1412-1450 AD), Raja Behram Khan alias Behram Sinha (1450-1478 AD), Raja Barhan-Ud-Din alias Barhan Sinha (1478-1503 AD), Raja Ali Khan (1503-1513 AD), Raja Bahadur Khan alias Bahadur Sinha (1513-1565 AD), Raja Mast Wali Khan (1565-1601 AD), Raja Taj-Ud-Din alias Chittar Sinha (1601 1646 AD), Raja Hayat Ullah Khan (16461648 AD), Raja Anayat Ullah Khan (16481662 AD), Raja Hadayat Ullah Khan, (1662-1683 AD), Raja Azamat Ullah Khan (1683-1762 AD), Raja Izat-Ullah Khan Ullah Khan (1762-1767 AD), Raja Karam Ullah Khan (1767-1813 AD), Raja Agar Ullah Khan (1813-1819 AD), Raja Raheem Ullah Khan (1819 AD to 26th Oct. 1846 AD) remained the Muslim Jaral Rajas of Rajouri. During the Jaral Muslim rules, Raja NoorUd-Din reconstructed Rajouri town. Shah Mir left the village Panch Gawara (Panch Gabbar from Rajouri) in 1313 AD and reached Kashmir where ultimately he became the First Muslim Sultan of Kashmir4n 1343 AD. Thakkers, Maliks of Thanna and Darhal emerged as a strong force. In the beginning of 15th Century AD, they helped Shahi Khan who fought tough battle at Thanna with the forces of his brother Sultan Ali Shah of Kashmir and after defeating Sultan Ali Shah at Thanna, Shahi Khan entered Kashmir victoriously and became the Sultan of Kashmir in 1420 AD under the title of Sultan Zain-UlAbdin. He took power in Kashmir only with the help of Thakker and Malik tribe of Thanna, Rajouri and Darhal. In 1464 AD, Sultan Zain-Ul-Abdin Badshah nominated a Thakker of Darhal area Jai Singh as the Ruler of Raj our. It appears that he could not reach Rajouri town and remained stationed in Darhal or Thanna area. In 1452 AD, Zain-Ul-Abdin reconstituted the outerhill state of Panchal Range comprised or Nowshera, Rajouri, Bhimber and Poonch under the name of Bhaya-DesaVinh and nominated his son Haji Khan as the Governor of this new principality. But

I

this state could not remain united and after some time, deference’s emerged between Badshah and his son Haji Khan. A battle took place between father and son at Bolesha in Kashmir, Haji Khan was defeated in 1453 AD. The outer states again broken into principalities and Rajouri continued being governed by the Jaral Rajas. In 1586 AD after the capture of Kashmir by the Mughals, Emperor Akbar visited Kashmir on that vary year and reached Rajouri also. He passed order to Raja Mast Wali Khan of Rajouri for the construction of Nowshera Fort and reconstruction of Nimak (salt) road from Bhimber to Peergali so that it could be made fit for travelling of Mughal caravans. The road was reconstructed by Raj a Mast Wali Khan of Rajouri and Behram Naik of Behramgala on the expenses of Mughals. Therefore, the name of Nimak Road was changed and it was renamed as Mughal Road. Rajouri had witnessed its glorious days during the period of Mughal Emperor Jahangir who visited Kashmir 13 times from 1605 to 1629 AD. He used to stay at Rajouri for some days in every tour. He passed orders to an Iranian Engineer Ali Mardhan Khan for the improvement of Mughal Road and construction of Baradaries, Sarais, Musafar Khanas, Hamams, Mosques etc. alongside the road for the convenience of the Mughal, qaravans. By this way, a beautiful Baradary was also constructed at Rajouri apart from a big Sarai at Thannamandi, Chingus and shelter stations at Nadhpur and Fatehpur, Sarai at Chandimarh etc. Number of Marhs were also constructed from Rattan Peer to Peergali for the convenience of Postmens who used to take the Dak of Mughal Emperors from Kashmir to Lahore by running from one Marh to another. During this very period, the Fort of Nowshera was renovated and a beautiful room under the name of "Noor Mehal" was constructed in the Fort for Jahangir and Noor Jahan. Mughal caravans were travelling on this road daily and there was great hustle and bustle at Rajouri during this period because this station was the base camp for further travel towards Kashmir. In Tuzak-eJahangiri, there are number of references about Rajouri. In one of his reference, Emperor Jahangir had directed Jaral Rajas to get rid off from the Customs which are not allowed in Islam. He writes that habitants of Thanna are speaking Hindi as well as Kashmiri. There is a great deference between their dresses, language, culture and habits as compared to Rajouri. The

place is hotter than Srinagar, Ladies wear woolen garments and nose ring. Jahangir had took last breath at Rajouri in 1629 AD when he was on the way to Lahore from Srinagar. A part of his body was also buried at Chingus Sarai. In 1644 AD, Emperor Shah Jahan along with his son, Prince Aurangzeb visited Kashmir and stayed at Rajouri for some days. At that time, Rajouri principality was governed by Raja Taj-Ud-Dm. He impressed Shahjahan upto this extent that Emperor Shahjahan organised the 2nd marriage of his son Prince Aurangzeb with Raj Bhai the daughter of Taj-Ud-Dm. Due to this marriage, the Rajas of Rajour had direct relations with the Mughal Darbar at Delhi. Raja Azamat Ullah Khan remained in Mughal Darbar for years together with Queen Raj Bhai. During the reign of Raja Azmat Ullah Khan of Rajouri, a young Rajput Lachhman Singh of Dassal (Rajouri) left his native place and ultimately settled at Nandher in Maharashtra. 10th Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj met him at Nandher and motivated him for fighting against the tyranny of Mughals in Punjab. This young Yogi Lachhman Singh accepted the orders of Guru Ji and made his mind to visit Punjab. Guru Ji renamed him as Banda Behragi. Banda Behragi reached Punjab and fought against the Government of that time. He liberated large part of Punjab from thejaws of Mughals but ultimately, he was captured and killed. During the rule of Raja Karam Ullah Khan of Rajouri, the great Saint Hazrat Sayed Ghulam Shah Bahadshah reached Shahdhara Sharief in 1760 AD, established his Darbar and started preaching humanity, love, brotherhood and teaching of Islam. He was a great Saint. ButRaja Karam Ullah Khan under estimated him due to which Hazrat Shah Sahib got annoyed and Karam Ullah got lot of setbacks. His four sons died in internal fighting. He himself fell ill seriously and was ultimately rescued only with the blessing of Hazrat Shah Sahib. In 1814 AD, when Maharaja Ranjit Singh decided to capture Kashmir, Raja Agar Ullah Khan of Rajouri became ally of Maharaja and offered his support to capture Kashmir. When the forces of Maharaja reached at Peergali pass, Agar Khan and his forces revolted and started attacks in civilian dresses on the forces of Maharaja. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was compelled to retreat to Lahore. But in 1815 AD, Maharaja took revenge by sending his forces under the command of Sardar Dil Singh who assaulted Rajouri town, Raja Agar Khan was escaped from the city and ultimately the town was deserted and

destroyed by the Khalsa forces. In 1819 AD, Maharaja Ranjit Singh made second attempt to capture Kashmir. He nominated Raja Raheem Ullah Khan, the brother of Agar Ullah Khan as the Raja of Rajour at Wazirabad Fort and dispatched him to Rajouri alongwith his forces for further arrangements. Raheem Ullah Khan reached Rajouri and became the Raja of Rajour. Agar Ullah Khan again escaped from Rajouri in the mountainous belt of Panchal Range. Raheem Ullah Khan helped Maharaja Ranjit Singh during his aggression on Kashmir and ultimately, with the help of Guru Ji and made his mind to visit Punjab. Guru Ji renamed him as Banda Behragi. Banda Behragi reached Punjab and fought against the Government of that time. He liberated large part of Punjab from the jaws of Mughals but ultimately, he was captured and killed. Antimicrobial Resistance-No Action Today, No Cure Tomorrow

n 1674, Anton van Leeuwen hoek, could see bacteria through a microscope. Louis Pasteur, in 1865, founded the science of microbiology, and proved that most infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms. This became known as the 'germ theory' of disease. Alexander Fleming, discovered the mould, penicillin in 1928, which could kill many germs that caused infections. Fleming's discovery saved the lives of millions of people during the course of time. Without this drug many soldiers during World War II would have died from infections of the wounds. The discovery of penicillin led to the discovery of a whole lot of other antibiotics such as streptomycin. It was a great step forward in the history of medicine. We live in an era of medical breakthroughs with new wonder drugs available to treat conditions that a few decades ago would have proved fatal. Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of a microorganism to survive when exposed to antimicrobial drugs. Genes can transfer this ability from one microorganism to another. Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread threaten the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers. When the organisms become resistant to most antimicrobials, they are often referred to as 'Superbugs'. At first all microorganisms were affected by sulfanilamide, and it was tagged a 'wonder drug'. Replace ghee with canola or olive oil

When a recipe calls for ghee or butter, substitute it with canola or olive oil for better health. Both these oils can help you to shed weight and reduce liver fat, lipids and triglycerides, says a study. The study conducted by the Diabetes Foundation (India) (DFI) and the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (N-DOC) has found that consuming olive or canola oil can help in decreasing weight, waist circumference and reduce liver fat, lipids and triglycerides. A group of 90 people were part of the study for three years from June 2007 to 2010. They were divided into three groups and asked to use one type of cooking oil — olive, canola or any other oil. "After a period of six months itself, we found that those who used olive or canola significantly reduced there weight, liver fat and triglycerides," said Seema Gulati, head of nutrition research group at N-DOC.

The group which used olive oil significantly reduced the body weight, waist circumference and liver fat. As for the 30 people who used canola oil, they reported a decrease in waist circumference and a significantly improved insulin and blood glucose. The group which

used other oils, except the soybean or sunflower oil — which have a high content of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) — as cooking medium had not showed any significant changes. "If the different traditional Indian oils used across the country are replaced by olive or

canola oil, it can lead to multiple health benefits," said Anoop Misra, director and head of department of diabetes and metabolic diseases at a leading hospital. he said that the study has important implications for Indians who are at heightened risk for diabetes and heart disease

Books are tonic for the brain

Reading is not just another leisurely activity or a way of brushing up your literacy skills and factual knowledge - it acts as a tonic for the brain too. Neuroscientist Susan Greenfield suggests that reading helps to expand attention spans in kids. "Stories have a beginning, a middle and an end - a structure that encourages our brains to think in sequence, to link cause, effect and significance," she says. "It is essential to learn this skill as a small child, while the brain has more plasticity, which is why it's so important for parents to read to their children. The more we do it, the better we get at it," Greenfield added. Reading can enrich our relationships by increasing our understanding of other cultures and helping us learn to empathise, the Daily Mail reports. "In a computer game, you might have to rescue a princess, but you don't care about her, you just want to win," explains

Greenfield. "But a princess in a book has a past, present and future, she has connections and motivations. We can relate to her. We see the world through her eyes." John Stein, emeritus professor of neuroscience at Magdalen College, Oxford, says reading is far from a passive activity. "Reading exercises the whole

brain," he explains. Reading stories to children will help their brains develop the ability to analyse the cause, effect and significance of eventsIn 2009, a brain-imaging study in the US showed that reading about landscapes, sounds, smells and tastes, activates brain areas tied to these experiences in real life, creating new neural path-

ways. Simply stated, our brains simulate real experiences, which doesn't happen when you're watching TV or playing computer games. In 2009, University of Sussex researchers showed how six minutes of reading can slash stress levels by more than twothirds, more than listening to music or going out for a walk.

and 20 percent respectively, compared with less than 0.5 percent among smokeless coal users of both sexes. These risks are almost as high as those reported for heavy smokers in Western countries, ranging between 20 percent and 26 percent. Lung cancer deaths were also associated with the average number of hours that a smoky coal user spent at home and the age at which participants started cooking. The researchers say that their findings have important implications for public health in this region of China and suggest that the use of less carcinogenic types of coal or other fuels can translate into a substantial reduction of lung cancer risk. As this chemical and physical composition of coal differs widely in different geographical locations, additional research is needed on the carcinogenicity of various types of coal, they added.

Scientists now have an explanation for why green tea is good for the brain -- it lies in the chemical properties that affect the production of brain cells, improving memory and spatial learning. "Green tea is a popular beverage across the world," said Yun Bai, professor from the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China. "There has been plenty of scientific attention on its use in helping prevent cardiovascular diseases, but now there is emerging evidence that its chemical properties may impact cellular mechanisms in the brain."Yun's team focused on the organic chemical EGCG, (epigallocatechin-3 gallate) a key property of green tea. While EGCG is a known antioxidant, the team believed it can also have a beneficial effect against age-related degenerative diseases, the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reports."We proposed that

EGCG can improve cognitive function by impacting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis," said Yun. "We focused our research on the hippocampus, the part of the brain which processes information from short-term to longterm memory." The team found that ECGC boosts the production of neural progenitor cells, which like stem cells can adapt, or differentiate, into various types of cells. The team then used lab mice to discover if this increased cell production gave an advantage to memory or spatial learning, according to a Medical University statement."We ran tests on two groups of mice, one which had imbibed ECGC and a control group (without ECGC)," said Yun."First the mice were trained for three days to find a visible platform in their maze. Then they were trained for seven days to find a hidden platform."

Best purple foods for good health There has been so much talk on having a rainbow of foods on your plate - a group of 'colours' of certain fruit signifying certain benefits. Of these purple foods are perhaps most significant as it is a fact that darker the food, the higher the antioxidant level. Antioxidants can prevent cell damage, and keep one looking younger. Here are more reasons to stock up on purple-hued foods today. Benefits galore: As per data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES), in a survey on eating and health, it was seen that adults who eat purple and blue fruits and vegetables are less likely to be overweight. They have a reduced risk for both high blood pressure and low HDL cholesterol. It was believed that anthocyanins, or compounds that give purple foods their colour, were responsible for this. Purple foods have a pigment called anthocyanin. This is a strong and antioxidant, which is said to reduce the risk of cancer. What they are: Eggplant, Purple grapes, figs, plums, dark cherries, raisins, purple cabbage are all candidates. Get cooking! Here are some quick-fix recipes... Plums: Take fresh plums, and put them in a grill with the skin on. Grill and sprinkle a little cinnamon powder on them. You

can also stick a clove in each of them and rest them awhile, then remove cloves and eat. Purple cabbage: Take purple cabbage, slice it up. Drizzle some balsamic vinegar or light sweet onion dressing over them. Enjoy! Figs: To make a healthy salad, just chop fresh figs along with shredded rocket leaves, feta cheese and add toasted pine nuts or chopped walnuts on them. Serve. Plums: This fruit is best had on its own. However, it can also be enjoyed in desserts and savouries. To make poached plums, place plums in a baking dish, add a little sugar and lemon juice and toss them gently so they get coated. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove and have with cream or just like that.

The use of "smoky coal" for household cooking and heating was found to be associated with a substantial increase in the lifetime risk of developing lung cancer, according to a study from China. This represents one of the strongest effects of environmental pollution reported for cancer risk in any population, the researchers said. It also underlines the importance of taking action to minimise exposure to the most hazardous types of fuel. About half the world's population uses coal and other solid fuels for cooking and heating, often in simple stoves that are unvented. Exposure to certain types of solid fuel smoke is associated with several diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory infections, and lung cancer. However, the relationship between smoky coal use and lung cancer is not

Exposure to pesticide behind childhood cough Children exposed to the widely used pesticide additive piperonyl butoxide (PBO) in the womb have heightened risk of noninfectious cough at ages 5 and 6, a new study has found. The findings support the premise that the children's respiratory system is susceptible to damage from toxic exposures during the prenatal period. A common symptom, childhood cough can disrupt normal daytime activities and interrupt sleep for both child and parent. Researchers at the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) at the Mailman School of Public Health and of Columbia University Medical Center conducted the study. Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is an organic compound used to bolster the effects of pyrethroid pesticides. Pyrethroids are the most commonly used pesticides for both professional pest control and non-professional residential use, according to a 2011 study by Mailman School researchers. Exposure to one pyrethroid, a variation of permethrin, was linked with increased risk for cough by

age 5 in a 2009 study by Rachel Miller, MD. In the current study, Dr. Miller and colleagues sought to build on these findings by exploring the effects of subsequent exposure during childhood, looking specifically at the effects of PBO exposure. Researchers looked at 224 mother-child pairs enrolled in the CCCEH birth cohort study of environmental exposures, examining measures of PBO and pyrethroid in personal air monitors worn by the mothers during pregnancy.

Air samples also were collected from the home over the course of two weeks when children were between 5 and 6 years old. Questionnaires were used to evaluate respiratory outcomes. Researchers found that children exposed to PBO during pregnancy had increased odds of reporting cough unrelated to cold or flu. Exposures to PBO during childhood were not a factor. There was no observed association between prenatal or childhood permethrin exposure and cough, something

the researchers say may be explained by the fact that PBO is much easier to measure in air samples than permethrin. There was also no association with PBO or permethrin exposure and other respiratory outcomes like wheeze or asthma. While it is unclear whether the effect is due mainly to PBO itself or residential pyrethroids of which PBO is an indicator, it is important to remember, said Dr. Miller, that "these exposures may be a factor in a very common problem for children—cough.

fully understood. So an international team of researchers compared deaths from lung cancer between lifelong users of "smoky coal" and "smokeless coal" for household cooking and heating in Xuanwei County, Yunnan Provine, China, where lung cancer rates are particularly elevated. In total, over 37,000 individuals were followed over a 20year period (1976-96) during which time more than 2,000 deaths from lung cancer were recorded. After taking account of other possible risk factors including tobacco use, lung cancer cases and deaths were substantially higher among users of smoky (i.e. bituminous) coal for home cooking and heating than users of smokeless (i.e. anthracitic) coal. In absolute terms, the risk of lung cancer death before 70 years of age for men and women using smoky coal was 18 percent

Personal care items cause asthma in kids Researchers have found that children exposed to diethyl phthalate (DEP) and butylbenzyl phthalate (BBzP)—phthalate chemicals commonly found in personal care and plastic products—have elevated risk of asthma-related airway inflammation. Of the 244 children aged 5 to 9 in the study, all had detectable levels of phthalates in their urine although these varied over a wide range. Higher levels of both phthalates were associated with higher levels of nitric oxide in exhaled breath, a biological marker of airway inflammation. The association between BBzP exposure and airway inflammation was especially strong among children who had recently reported wheeze, a common symptom of asthma, according to the researchers at Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) at the Mailman School of Public Health. "While many factors contribute to childhood asthma, our study shows that exposure to phthalates may play a significant role," said Allan Just, PhD, first author on the new CCCEH study and current

postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Just and co-investigators looked at children enrolled in the CCCEH Mothers and Newborns study. All live in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx where asthma prevalence is high. Exposure to phthalates was measured through a urine test, and the level of nitric oxide in the child's exhaled breath was quantified as a marker of airway inflammation. The study is the first to use exhaled nitric oxide in a

study of phthalate exposure in children. By using the biomarker in exhaled breath, the researchers overcame a significant hurdle. "Many asthma patients only have asthma exacerbations a few times a year, making it difficult to discern short-term associations between environmental exposures and the disease," explained Matthew Perzanowski, PhD, senior author and Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School.

"To solve this problem, we used nitric oxide, which has been shown to be a reliable marker of airway inflammation in response to known asthma triggers like vehicle emissions," he said.Phthalates are used widely in consumer products, including plastics, vinyl flooring, and personal care products, making exposure ubiquitous in the United States and other developed nations. Phthalates enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, and absorption through the skin.

Domestic factors too responsible for difficult economic situation: PM

With falling rupee and rising oil prices casting a shadow over the Indian economy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said the country is faced with a difficult economic situation for which some domestic factors too were responsible. “It cannot be denied that the country is faced with a difficult economic situation,” Singh said after leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley sought his response on the rupee hitting a lifetime low. “There are several causes (for the economic woes). I do not deny some domestic factors too are responsible,” he said. Listing some of the external factors that have impacted rupee and Indian economy, Singh said US monetary stance and problems created by tensions in Syria and its “inevitable consequences on oil prices” have played their role. “We have to reckon with these uncertainties,”

he said, adding he needed “some time to reflect” on these. “I would be happy to make a statement tomorrow,” the prime minister said. Earlier, when the House met for the day, Jaitley raised the issue of depleting value of the rupee, which has fallen 20% against the US dollar this year and already breached 68 mark. He said there was “panic” in the country as people don’t know where the devaluation of the rupee will stop. Inflationary pressure will be twice as rising food prices will be coupled with imported inflation in form of rising oil prices in the international market, he said. Manufacturing growth has been low while services sector has seen expansion drop to 7% from 10% earlier. “In situation like this, what is that government is going to do,” he asked.

Anna ready to endorse Modi if he leaves BJP: US media report

WASHINGTON: India’s anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has said that he would be “happy to endorse” Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi if he left the BJP, an American media outlet has reported. Hazare, who left for India from New York on Wednesday after a nearly two-week US trip, made the remarks during an interaction with the Indian-American community, academicians and think-tanks at an event organised by the Hindu Temple in Delaware on August 20, the Huffington Post reported. “Anna Hazare did not endorse Narendra Modi. He said he did not believe in political parties and since Modi was a member of BJP, a political party, he could not endorse him. “When pressed to endorse Modi as an individual, he responded by saying that if Modi left the BJP, he would be happy to endorse him,” Muqtedar Khan, Associate Professor at the University of Delaware and a Fellow at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, wrote in the Huffington Post.

Anna was not available for comments when approached by the PTI over phone through his US person of contact. Khan, who moderated the question and answer session at the Delaware event, wrote that for an ethical activist, it was a very political answer. “Anna was trying to get out of endorsing Modi without offending Modi’s supporters. But I suspect he offended the Hindu secularists by not condemning Modi and disappointed Hindu nationalists by not clearly endorsing him,” said Khan. According to Khan, Anna’s is activism and his stature have put corruption on the national agenda. “I am not sure if his solutions will work, but the awareness and urgency that he is generating could inspire others to come up with more realistic solutions,” he wrote. The reported remarks made by Anna is quite distinct from the other statements of Anna on Modi. At an event held in the suburb of Washington on August 22, Anna had said neither Narendra Modi nor Rahul Gandhi is fit to become the Prime Minister of India.

Jaitley said finance minister P Chidambaram’s 10-point plan is economic theory as everyone knows that fiscal deficit and current account deficit have to be cut and exports have to be increased. With economic growth rate falling and inflation ruling high, the country was headed towards stagflation. Stagflation, a portmanteau of stagnation and inflation, is a term used in economics to describe a situation where an inflation rate is high, the economic growth rate slows down, and unemployment remains steadily high. The present situation, he said, had arisen because economic prudence has been made subservient to populism. While crude oil and edible oil are essential imports, $20 billion was spent on importing coal despite the country having coal reserves in excess of demand. “It is a panic situation... we want to know from the prime minister what he has in his mind for reviving the situation. In a democracy, the buck stops at the prime minister and not disappear,” he said. “He must take the House and the country into confidence.” Sitaram Yechury (CPM) wanted to know if after 22 years of reforms under Manmohan Singh, the country has come back to square one.”

Congress, BJP politicising Gorkhaland issue: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of creating unrest in Darjeeling for electoral gains. “This is a deliberate strategy to create unrest in the hills through politics. It has become a trend for the Congress and BJP to politicise the Gorkhaland issue before the general elections,” Banerjee said here. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) intensified their separatist movement after the Congress Working Committee and the United Progressive Alliance endorsed creation of a separate Telangana state on July 30. Congress, BJP politicising Gorkhaland issue: Mamata Banerjee The GJM joined hands with several pro-Gorkhaland parties and formed the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee, now spearheading the stir which began on August 3. Banerjee accused GJM of holding the region to ransom for their inter-

ests, despite been granted autonomy through the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). “Through the GTA, they (GJM) have got autonomy. All the departments, barring one or two have been given to them. What else do they want? We want Darjeeling to progress and develop. I don’t know for what political purpose the ongoing development in Darjeeling is being thwarted. “They have the money, even the name Gorkhaland has been given to them. Only statehood has not been given and that is not possible because it is part of West Bengal,” said Banerjee. The GJM-run GTA was created

July 18, 2011 via a tripartite agreement signed between the Gorkha outfit and the central and state governments. Reiterating that the state would never be divided, Banerjee urged the people of the region to maintain peace and allow normal life to resume. The chief minister is scheduled to visit the strife-torn hills Sep 2 to participate in a programme of the Lepcha community in Kalimpong.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing alleged irregularities in the allocation of 192 coal blocks between 1993 and 2011. The agency has registered three preliminary enquiries, which are related to allocations between 2006 and 2009, blocks awarded between 1993 and 2004, and allotments to joint ventures. The government had formed the IMG last year to review the progress of coal blocks allocated to firms for captive use and recommend action, including deallocation.

Giving a thumbs down to the food security bill, rating agency Moody’s on Thursday said the measure is credit negative as it will weaken government finances and deteriorate macroeconomic situation. “The measure (food bill) is credit negative for the Indian government because it will raise government spending on food subsidies to about 1.2 % of GDP per year from an estimated 0.8 % currently, exacerbating the government’s weak finances,” Moody’s said in a statement. Moody’s currently assigns ‘Baa3’ rating on India, with a stable outlook. ‘Baa3’ means medium grade with moderate credit risk. The food security bill was passed by the Lok Sabha earlier this week. The Bill seeks to provide cheap foodgrains to 82 crore people in the country, ushering in the biggest programme in the world to fight hunger. The annual financial burden after its implementation is estimated to be about Rs. 1.30 lakh crore at current cost. As the bill is likely to be implemented in the remaining months of the current fiscal, its impact on government finances will be less in 2013-14, but much more in the years to come, Moody’s said. The total food subsidy budgeted in the cur-

Manai ashram on the day of incident) will appear before the investigating officer today for interrogation. According to the DCP, Shilpi and Keshav had sent the 16-year-old girl to Jodhpur for a ritual to ward off evil spirits for which Asaram had wanted to be alone in the room with the minor on the night of August 15, and Shiva had threatened the girl against disclosing the incident to anyone. Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, in comments which could stroke a controversy, had claimed that the minor girl who levelled the allegations is “mentally unstable”.

rent fiscal is Rs. 90,000 crore, of which Rs. 10,000 crore is towards the implementation of the programme. “It will raise future subsidy expenditure commitments, hindering the government’s ability to consolidate its finances,” Moody’s said, adding, the government subsidies will contribute to the already high food inflation. The agency further said India’s fiscal deficits are already higher than those of its emerging market peers. It said the high fiscal deficit contributes to the Current Account Deficit (CAD) by keeping domestic demand high and increasing imports. A high CAD, the difference between inflow and outflow of foreign currency, puts pressure on the domestic currency and fuels prices. The rupee has depreciated about 25 % this year and touched a record low of 68.80 to a dollar yesterday. The food bill seeks to provide highly subsidised food grains to 75 % of the rural and 50 % of the urban population through the public distribution system (PDS). It will guarantee 5 kg of rice, wheat and coarse cereals per month per person at a fixed price of Rs. 3, Rs. 2 and Rs. 1 respectively.

IIT Roorkee professor found murdered with his throat slit

A senior professor at IIT Roorkee, was found dead at his flat on the campus with his throat slit, a senior police official said on Thursday. The maid servant found the 60-year-old Arun Kumar, a senior professor in the Electrical Computer Science Department of the Institution, lying in a pool of blood at his flat with his throat slit, Haridwar SSP Rajiv Swaroop said. Though the cause of his death is being probed, the possibility of a suicide or murder cannot be ruled out, he said. Kumar lived alone in the flat since the death of his wife a few years ago, he said. Two of his daughters stay abroad while one stays in Gurgaon, he said. The elderly professor is said to have been suffering from depression since the death of his wife, he said, adding that the case is being investigated from all angles.

Could contest Lok Sabha polls if Congress wants: Digvijay Singh

Stating that he had no plans to contest the state Assembly elections, Singh told reporters here that, “However, if the party allows me I will contest next year’s Lok Sabha elections.” Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday made it clear that he would not contest Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections slated later this year, but could enter the general elections fray if the party permits him. Stating that he had no plans to contest the state Assembly elections, Singh told reporters here that, “However, if the party allows me I will contest next year’s Lok Sabha elections.” The Congress leader said though he had always been receiving a lot of flak for criticising RSS, but was always proved correct. “Whenever I say anything about the RSS I face a lot of criticism, but subsequently I have always been proved right,” he asserted. Singh charged the state BJP gov-

Issue notices to coal mines allocatees under CBI scanner: IMG

NEW DELHI: The inter-ministerial group on coal blocks has recommended issuing show cause notices to allocatee of mines including the one jointly given to ArcelorMittal, Sterlite Energy, Lanco and Reliance Energy, which are named in FIR registered by CBI. “In cases of coal blocks, where an FIR has been registered by CBI against the allocatee or one of the allocatees of the coal block, IMG has recommended to issue show cause notices for delaying the production,” a source close to the development said. Rampia Rampia & Dip Side of Rampia mine jointly alloted to Sterlite Energy, GMRBSE -1.56 % Energy, ArcelorMittal, Lanco Group, Navbharat Power and Reliance Energy, is among the coal blocks that have been recommended to be slapped with a show cause notice, the source added. However, the coal ministry is yet to take a decision on the recommendations of the panel, the source said. The Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) had earlier asked the Coal Ministry to seek an opinion of the Law Ministry with regard to six mines named in

Asaram Bapu to face arrest if he fails to turn up for questioning

JODHPUR, AUG 29: Controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, will face arrest if he fails to appear before the Jodhpur Police tomorrow, a top police officer has said. “We will wait until August 30 as per the deadline of the summons served on him and if he fails to turn up by August 30, we will send a team to arrest him on August 31,” Jodhpur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph told reporters here late last night. 72-year-old Asaram had sought extension in the date of appearance before the investigation officer of the case at Jodpur citing he had various pre-decided religious fixtures lined up till September 19. Yesterday, DCP Ajay Pal Lamba had said that police will wait till August 30 and if the self-styled godman fails to appear before them for questioning, further course of action would be decided on that day. Meanwhile, three other accused, including Shilpi (the warden of the hostel at Gurukul), Keshav (attendant of Gurukul) and Shiva (caretaker of Asaram, who was with him at

ernment with not fulfilling most of the promises made since the 2003 Assembly elections. The BJP promised to waive loans up to Rs 50,000 of farmers but it has done nothing of that kind. The party had also made tall promises about im-

proving the conditions of roads, electricity and water in the state, he said. “It is really sad to see that the BJP has miserably failed on all these fronts and yet it makes claims about developing Madhya Pradesh,” he said. Farmers are not getting electricity in Madhya Pradesh even under the much hyped Atal Jyoti Yojana, he said. Commenting on the frequent disruptions of Parliamentary proceedings, Singh said the Opposition in Lok Sabha was not interested in running it and was resorting to frequent interruptions. The Congress leader also alleged that many students had got admission in MBBS courses in MP through fraudulent means. He demanded that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should order an inquiry into the matter, failing which he would seek a CBI probe in it.

Novelist Chetan Bhagat draws flak for ‘rupee-rape’ tweet

Novelist Chetan Bhagat came in for flak from netizens today after he used the imagery of rape to describe the rupee’s free fall. “The rupee is asking, is there no punishment for my rapists,” Bhagat tweeted after rupee touched a new low, inviting barrage of angry reactions from many Twitter users who accused him trivialising the gravity of rape crimes. Rupee: what’s the real value? “When the Mumbai rape survivor is still recovering in a hospital, using the ‘rape joke’

was ‘insensitive, crass and stupid’,” a user wrote. Many users argued that the word “rape” should never be used casually. “Let’s get it straight. Currencies do not get raped,” one said. Bhagat, who has one of the largest followings on Twitter, deleted his tweet but defended it strongly. “People are flipping out on using word rape as metaphor.Murder is Ok... Oh wait, chance to attack someone, Why miss?” he asked. “Have people lost perspective totally? Can a word officially have several mean-

ings and contexts? Or is twitter about looking for fight?” another of his tweets read. However, the heat and controversy generated by the comments was enough to propel Bhagat into one of the top “trends” on the micro-blogging site. And he was not without supporters who defended the rape metaphor in the context of poor state of economy. Another well known author Shobhaa De used a similar imagery in her tweet. “Dumb questions: If the UPA government is forced to quit, does the Opposition possess a magic wand to fix the rupee-rape crisis overnight,” she wrote.
