Alarming increase in crimes against women Superstitions play a major role in exploitation by fake God men 3328 cases of crime against women in 2012 only From our special correspondent Srinagar, October 29: With the arrest of one more fake God man, from Shopian, who allegedly raped and kidnapped a minor girl, the alarming situation of degradation of values in our society has once more come to fore. The fake God man with a criminal past allured a fifteen year young girl with his fake spirituality as he used to cure superstitious people through amulets and purifying water. This incident also exposes our belief in superstitions and their remedies by these fake “Darveshs” (god men) who fulfil their lust exploiting the illiterate or even some educated girls. These fake god men influence the superstitious parents to make a way of entering their houses and then ultimately overpower the young girls with their jugglery of words. It is unfortunate that in this twenty-first century is still engulfed with the superstitions and in a modern scientific age these fake god men still operate and destroy the lives of young girls whom they man-over on the pretext of curing them. Instead of utilising the services of the doctors
and psychiatrists, the parents prefer the treatment through these fraudulent people. Earlier the society was wrecked by sensational disclosures of another fake god man who was running a Rajnish type institution where he was exploiting and sexually abusing young girls through his hench men and women on the plea of purifying them so that they attain such a spiritual heights where heaven was a surety for them after death. After his deeds came to the light the police swung into action and put him behind the bars. It is not for the first time in the valley that such incidents happened but there are hundreds of such examples wherein these fake god men indulge in immoral activities and also in robberies and thefts. In several cases non-state subjects working as Imams lured girls and made their escape good with the girls. Recently one Imam killed a youth at Qamarwari Srinagar while pushing him in the river as he had developed illicit relations with his wife and wanted to get rid of him. If one goes with the official version there have been 578 rape cases reported in

the state last year only, which is an alarming trend in a society guided by sufi philosophy and which has cherished the moral values taught by all religions for ages together. The question arises as to why there is a sudden spurt in the gruesome acts like that of Shopian, Budgam or Qamarwari Srinagar. There are various reasons for these happenings and the most important reasons are the superstition and the worsening economic conditions marred by social competition and show off trend. The majority of society is still consisting of illiterates or semi- educated people who are gullible enough to believe tantrums of
sides political interference makes these laws ineffective and meaningless. The only remedy for these cases is public awareness which includes to get rid of superstitions social evils and last but not the least, to treat the girl child at par with the male child. Though there has been a decline in the rape cases in most of the states since the passage of a new Bill by the Parliament, making the punishment more severe including awarding of life imprisonment and death, but it is shocking that the crime has increased in the valley called Rishivaer means land of saints It is shocking to know that J & K has achieved a dubious distinction of being number two state in the country in crimes against women. According to report ‘Crime in India’”3328 cases of crime against women have been committed in 2012 in the state whose population of women is 56.79 lacs. On all India level the total percentage of crime against women in J & K is some 1.36% which makes it the second state in this category. These alarming figures are ample proof of the
a self-reliant state. “We have to turn towards New Delhi for everything, efforts should be made so that the state could be economically independent.” Mir further stated that the economic condition of the state is ‘worst’ and that its leadership has to make necessary steps so that its economic growth could be made prosperous. “We don’t need the political statements and should not talk of political solutions when the state is economically week.”

Aries
March 21-April 19 Gadgets and new devices that are supposed to make it easier to accomplish certain tasks may actually cause more confusion. You’re often a big fan of doing things the old-fashioned way. Even though people may laugh at you, you tend to insist that the old way is the best way. Take your time to complete chores and tasks today.
Taurus April 20-May 20
Be careful about going overboard with your sarcasm. Some people take your comments seriously. Not everyone understands your humor. This could make communication unclear at times. Deliver a straight story without exaggeration or embellishment thrown in to make things juicier. Don’t just tell the truth - tell the whole truth. You’ll feel better about the situation.
Gemini May 21-June 21
Self-image could be a difficult issue for you. Perhaps you’ve painted a false picture of yourself lately. In an effort to cover your insecurity, you may not have expressed how you feel to some people. When you look in a mirror, you may find that the person you see is quite different than the person other people see. This conflict may put you in some uncomfortable situations.
Cancer June 22-July 22
You may feel like there’s absolutely nowhere to turn. Reality is a scary thing to face. The last thing you want to do is be serious. But you’re finding it difficult to get satisfaction from your fantasy world. Your dreams beckon to you, but you’re afraid to give in to that temptation because you feel a strong sense of duty to other people and places.

Leo
July 23-August 22 You have a strong sense of self. You take charge of situations instead of letting them take charge of you. But this sense of independence and self-confidence may threaten other people. There are some who feel secure knowing that you rely on them. This is one of those days when you may feel a few growing pains as shifting personalities clash with comfortable behavior patterns.
Virgo
August 23-September 22
Your well-considered actions will be effective today. There’s strength in your mental power. You shouldn’t hesitate to direct others toward avenues that would be good for them. You have the vision to see things that other people might not notice. People may not be able to see something in front of them even if they’re about to crash into it!
Libra
September 23-October 23 Be careful about taking everything as a personal offense. Others’ inconsiderate actions may hurt you emotionally, but they don’t have to. As long as you’re able to maintain a healthy perspective on the situation, you’ll see that many of the behaviors that upset you result from someone else’s insecurities as opposed to their lack of affection for you.
Scorpio
October 24-November 21 Difficult tension may be frustrating for you to handle. You may wonder why everyone can’t just get along. The answer may seem simple to you, with your easygoing attitude. Unfortunately, there are big egos and unrealistic attitudes involved that make it difficult for other people to see things so simply. You may find that the best you can do is take a step away from the fire.
Sagittarius November 22-December 21
Tension may arise among friends when someone suddenly feels like an ignored third wheel. People tend to pair up. Do what you can to stay on topics to which everyone can contribute equally. Staying united is key. Together you’re extremely powerful allies, while divided you’re each other’s worst enemies.
Capricorn December 22-January 19
Your lively, imaginative spirit is in tune with the collective. The need for a worldly consciousness and evolving humanity has become more obvious to you as time goes by. These issues come up today, but don’t be surprised if you get a reality check. Your dreams may be unrealistic. Someone could try to burst your bubble, so be careful. Don’t lose sight of your goals.
Aquarius January 20-February 18
Just when you slow down, simplify, and plan, things start to pick up again. Your imagination starts to fly. Stabilization hinders your creative spirit. The last thing your artistic mind wants to do is slow down. Resolving this inner conflict may be hard, but it’s possible. These two sides are on the same team, not opposing ones. If they work together, you can both achieve both goals.
Pisces
February 19-March 20 Your sense of play might get you into trouble. This sort of attitude could run up against someone who’s trying to stay on task and take things seriously. It may be difficult for you to know how far to push a situation. You may want to force the other person to join your escapades, but you also see the need to settle down and get serious.

Need to give a flip to overall development
J
&K is perhaps the only state which has a very poor infrastructure in the fields of road connectivity, irrigation, drinking water supply, and provision of basic civic amenities besides other fields which have been badly effected during the past about three decades of uncertainty caused due to law and order situation. Though a tourist destination no head- way has been made in overall development of required infrastructure which could have helped the state to overcome the economic instability. Whatever was done before 1989 that was destroyed by the situation which engulfed the state particularly the Kashmir valley. The state depends mostly on central assistance as its own resources are limited and cannot take the state ahead on the path of development on its own. The state in fact needed a massive budgetary support to overcome the deficiencies in the developmental field but due to the uncertainty neither could that be possible within its own resources nor with the help of central assistance. During the last two and a half decades whatever came in the way of central assistance that was spend on security related matters and the developmental side got automatically neglected and forgotten. Now as the situation has improved the centre and the state governments should concentrate on the development of the basic infrastructure in all the fields which are directly connected with the people. The road connectivity, the irrigation, the water supply, the education and above all the power sector needs immediate attention of the government so that the state goes ahead rapidly on the path of development and problems of the people are mitigated. In a democratic setup people expect that their elected representatives will stand always with them and will try their best to provide the best facilities and civic amenities to them. If this is not done the very purpose of democracy is defeated and the people’s aspirations die down and they loose faith in the system. This year the state has got over seven thousand crores as the budgetary support from central government. This amount can be utilized by the state to overcome the developmental problems of the people so that a flip is given to them. The main problem with this state is that it has a limited work season and that limited season should be utilized as fast as possible so that the money sanctioned by the central government does not remain unspend.

Ageing and Health
he word 'age' has been used by physiologists to express certain natural divisions in human development and decay. These are known as infancy, lasting to the 7th year; childhood to the 14th; youth to the 21st; and adult till 50th; and then old age. The two great factors influencing the length of life are heredity and environment. One way in which environmental conditions affect longevity is through diseases contracted in the course of life. Healthcare is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, illness, injury and other physical and mental impairments in humans. Healthcare is delivered by practitioners in medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, and other care providers. Access to health care varies across countries, groups and individuals, largely influenced by social and economic conditions as well as the health policies in place. According to WHO, a well functioning healthcare system requires a robust financing mechanism, reliable information on which to base decisions and policies; and well maintained facilities and logistics to deliver quality medicines and technologies. Healthcare can form a significant part of a country's economy. In 2008, the healthcare industry consumed an average of 9.0% of the GDP across the most developed OECD countries. The United States 16.0%, France 11.2% and Switzerland 10.7% of GDP, were the three top spenders. Healthy or normal old age is attended by diminution in functional activity which corresponds with the characteristic changes of atrophy and involution in the structure of organs and tissues and of a diminished area of the capillary blood vessels. Fatigue is more readily produced; memory, especially for names, becomes less agile; and willpower, like the gait, becomes less certain. The mental outlook is largely determined by that of the individual in the past, happy and kindly, or pessimistic and uncharitable. It is hard to draw a sharp line of demarca-
tion between normal old age, with its namely India and China contributing a million in 2001 to 179 million in 2031 and limitations due to atrophic changes in the significant proportion of this growing further to 301 million in 2051. PM, Narendra Modi to share stage amid battle over Sardar Patel’s legacy The Prime Minister was greeted with flowers after he landed in Ahmedabad this evening by the man who hopes to replace him in office, Narendra Modi. They will shortly share the stage at the inauguration of a museum in Ahmedabad dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the iconic leader from Gujarat who was India’s first Home Minister. The two leaders will first visit the museum together and then will arrive on stage. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma has, however, turned down Mr Modi’s invite to attend another event in Gujarat on Thursday, where the foundation will be laid for a massive statue of Sardar Patel. Mr Sharma, in a caustic letter, accuses Mr Modi, of “misusing the name of Sardar for political propaganda.” He adds, “It is rather odd that you have attempted to brazenly usurp the rich legacy of Sardar Patel whose approach and beliefs militate against all that is personified by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak
Sangh (RSS), whose nominee you are.” The RSS is the BJP’s ideological mentor. Over the last few weeks, the Congress has begun a high-decibel campaign accus-
Dismissing a PIL, the court told the petitioner: “We are hearing the matter and you are reaching the conclusion.” The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed an application seeking a direction to the Prime Minister to file an affidavit explaining allocation of coal blocks to various companies during the period he held charge of the Coal Ministry. “Dismissed,” said the apex court bench headed by Justice R.M. Lodha as he brushed aside PIL petitioner advocate M.L. Sharma’s plea seeking directions to the Prime Minister to file the affidavit. Dismissing the plea, the court said: “We are hearing the matter and you are reaching the conclu-
sion.” The apex court also asked the CBI to file a fresh status report by January 9, 2014 in the case. The court also allowed the investigation agency to share its status report with two in-house prosecutors before their presentation in the court. Also on Tuesday, the CBI told the court that it was yet to get two Coal Ministry files including one on minutes of the screening committee. Meanwhile, the Centre submitted before the Supreme Court its opposition to granting of ex-officio power of secretary to the CBI Director, allowing him to directly report to Minister.

Maharashtra: Teacher Suspended for Making Students Massage Her Legs
No hidden treasure in Unnao, ASI stops excavation: Report
In a shocking incident, a woman teacher of a government school here allegedly made speech and hearing impaired students massage her legs. The teacher, Shital Avchar, working at a government run school for deaf and mute students, was also found guilty of taking nap in the classroom during school hours and harassing the pupils, officials said. The misdemeanour of the teacher came to light through a purported sting operation conducted by a student wo sent video clips to a school official. Subsequently, Akola zilla parishad’s chief executive officer Arun Unhale ordered an inquiry in which the teacher was prima facie held guilty, following which he recommended her suspension. She was suspended from service yesterday.Meanwhile, the human rights organisation here demanded the teacher’s immediate dismissal from
Nitish Kumar takes on Narendra Modi with reference to Hitler Rajgir: Nitish Kumar’s revenge was served cold Two days after political rival Narendra Modi called him an “opportunist” who has betrayed Bihar, Mr Kumar offered a glut of admonishments for his political rival. The Prime Minister addresses the nation from Red Fort on Independence Day. Mr Kumar said that “Your (Mr Modi’s) Red Fort dream will remain a dream.Mr Modi, who is the BJP’s candidate for prime minister, held a rally in Patna on Sunday jut after a string of explosions in which six people were killed and 83 injured. Mr Kumar today refusted the BJP’s claims of “gross criminal negligence”, alleging that his former ally sees “only the defects in me now.” He was just getting warmed up. The Bihar Chief Minister went on to say that the BJP’s repeated reference to “a Modi wave” that’s sweeping India is

(Highlights of his speech) | (Watch) An aspirant for Prime Minister must b e patient, Mr Kumar said, adding, without naming his political rival, “I have heard that Gujaratis have a sweet tooth. Then why are his words so lacking in sweetness?” Mr Kumar pulled the trigger in June on his 17-year alliance with the BJP overs its decision to make Mr Modi in charge of its national campaign. Mr Modi has worked hard to remind voters that he comes from a poor family and started his career selling tea at railway stations. “I too have dreams,” Mr Kumar chided, “But not of being PM. I have not sold tea, but I too come from a modest background,” he said.
Onion price rise will be “downfall” of Sheila Dikshit government: Sushma Swaraj NEW DELHI: BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that the onion price rise issue was a case of “divine justice” as it would lead to the “downfall” of the Congress government which had used an earlier jump in the prices of the vegetable to oust the saffron party from power in Delhi. “During her campaign against me (Chief Minister) Sheila Dixit would wear onion garlands. Congress made it a big issue. “The same onion issue is now becoming the cause of the downfall of the Congress government,” Swaraj said at the launch here of a book authored by the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for Delhi, Harsha Vardhan. Galloping onion prices are becoming a major issue ahead of the Delhi elections and Swaraj, the former chief minister of Delhi, termed it “divine justice”. Rise in the prices of the food item had been one of the major reasons for the downfall in 1998 of the BJP government in the state, then headed by Swaraj.
Meanwhile, Swaraj lashed out at Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi for saying that some of the victims of the Muzaffarnagar riots had been approached by Pakistani intelligence agencies.
Swaraj, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, said that instead of dwelling on violence in Uttar Pradesh, Congress should first speak about the 1984 Delhi
riots. “They (Congress leaders) should also talk about the Delhi riots, which they don’t. That tragedy happened in Delhi,” she said. Gandhi, in recent speeches, has attacked BJP for allegedly “spreading hatred”, for which the saffron party has filed a complaint with Election Commission claiming violation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of elections. Swaraj also slammed Congress for their use of the word “communal”, saying the party thought that “by using this word, they can win any election”. Referring to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Swaraj said she would campaign extensively for the same and hold 100 meetings before the city cast its vote on Dec. 4. “Harsh Vardhan has asked me to hold 100 meetings before the elections, to which I have agreed. “After the Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh elections, I will devote all the time to Delhi elections,” she said.
Modi govt wants to keep Lokayukta in its clutches: Sibal Law minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday slammed the BJP for adopting ‘double standards’ in dealing with corruption, saying the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat is trying to keep the proposed state Lokayukta in its ‘clutches.’ Sibal’s remarks came days after the Gujarat Assembly passed a new Lokayukta bill establishing the primacy of the Chief Minister and the government in the appointment of the anti-corruption watchdog. “BJP has a double face. They want something else for their state and something different for the central government. In Gujarat, it is completely opposite from what they propose for central government. This clearly shows their double standar ds in politics,” Sibal told reporters here. He was asked to comment on the new Lokayukta Ayog Bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly earlier this month as Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna met him here today to discuss the fate of the Lokayukta bill passed by the previous BJP government in the hill state. “They want a Lokpal for central government which should have such a level of transparency that exists nowhere in the world. But when it comes to Gujarat, the CM will appoint Lokayukta...it is a state where Lokayukta has not been appointed for the past 10 years,” the Union Minister said. He accused the Gujarat government of trying to keep Lokayukta in its “clutches”. “But they want the Lokpal to be a free bird keeping eye on every issue. For Gujarat, they want the CM to keep eye on everything,”
ing Mr Modi and the BJP of trying to appropriate the legacy of Sardar Patel, a lifelong Congressman. The dispute peaked after a newspaper quoted Mr Modi as saying that Sardar Patel’s funeral in 1950 was not attended by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted videos that countered that claim. Mr Modi today tweeted that the newspaper has accepted that it misquoted him. But the controversy is still ticking. Union minister Manish Tewari today said that Sardar Patel had in a letter in 1948 linked the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in January that year to the communal politics of the BJP’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh or RSS. Mr Tewari said, “I want to ask the BJP or their newly anointed pretender - do they endorse or agree with the views of Sardar Patel with regard to the RSS...?”

reconsideration, dubbing the legislation as “complete mockery of the judicial process and detrimental to the interests of public welfare”. In the existing Gujarat Lokayukta Act 1986, the power of selection of lokayukta is vested with the Governor and the Chief Justice of the High Court. The new bill provides for the appointment by a six-member committee headed by the chief minister.

NEW DELHI: The Archaeological Survey of India has stopped digging for gold treasure at the fort of Raja Rao Ram Bux Singh in Unnao. According to ASI officials, excavations have confirmed that there was no gold at the fort, Times Now reported. Some pottery pieces from Buddhist era have been found from the site. The excavation had begun on October 18 after a seer, Shobhan Sarkar, saw in his dreams that 1,000 tonnes of gold was supposed to be buried under the ruins of the 19th century fort. Wish Sardar Patel had been first PM of India: Narendra Modi Ahmedabad: At a function to inaugurate a museum dedicated to the life of India’s first Home Minister and freedom fighter Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi underlined the need for unity in the country and denounced the culture of violence. At the same time, while welcoming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was present on the dais with him, Modi said that if Patel had become the first PM of India then the face of the country would have been something else. “I wish Patel had become
the first PM of India. Patel was a visionary. In 1919 when he was a councillor in Gujarat he has made sure that women’s reservation bill was passed,” Modi said. Hailing Patel as the man who worked tirelessly for the unity of the country, Gujarat CM said, “He worked for the unity of the country and has left behind a rich legacy for us. But sadly whether it is terrorism or Maoism, attempts are being made to break the country.” He added, “But I know that they will not be successful at their attempts. In the land of Gandhi and Patel, the culture of guns and bombs will
never succeed.” Modi also exhorted those who had strayed to join the mainstream and work for the progress of the country. “Those who have gone on the wrong path should come back and work for the growth and betterment of the country.” Modi said that this could be done and gave the example of Punjab. Extending a warm welcome to Manmohan Singh, Modi thanked the PM for all the awards that the Centre had bestowed upon Gujarat for good governance. He said that the awards had inspired his government to work harder.
Cut the genitals of rapists to end rapes: Ajit Pawar But who will do the job, asks Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut. In yet another foot-in-the-mouth moment, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that incidents of rape can be stopped if the genitals of rapists are cut off. On Monday, while addressing a function organised by the Nationalist Congress Party’s women’s wing in Jalna, situated 400km from Mumbai, Pawar said that if a “rascal” does not change his ways even after repeated warnings, he should be given harsh punishment. He went on to add, “We should find a permanent solution to problems like rape. We should cut off the genitals of rapists. If this step is taken seriously and successfully, then other perverts will automatically be deterred from committing such crimes.” Pawar is not new to such brash and controversial statements. In April this year, while addressing a public meeting in Pune’s Indapur, Pawar had mocked Bhai-
yya Deshmukh, a farmer from a drought-hit area in Solapur, asking, “If there is no water in the dam, how can we release it? Should we urinate
into it?” This comment had stirred up a hornet’s nest, following which Pawar was forced to apologise. Following his latest comment, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut had a crucial question — who will take up the task of cutting the rap-
ists’ private parts? He added, “This is a shameless government. Earlier too, Pawar had promised he would teach a lesson to moneylenders who exploit the poor. But nothing happened. He only makes tall claims to influence people. However, people are smart now; they won’t fall for his talks.” Sena MLC Neelam Gohre said Pawar’s statement was a ploy to divert attention from the irrigation scam. She added, “Also, he wants to lure women voters by making such bold statements.” Sagar Sanap, the general secretary of BJP’s youth wing (south Mumbai), believes that such remarks are almost always made to grab the attention of the masses. “The government should instead introspect and figure out why women are being attacked in the first place. There is no fear in criminals’ minds. They are confident that they can get away with it easily. This is the reason why crime against women is on the rise,” he said.

Dawood offered each of us a car if we beat Pakistan: Vengsarkar The reactions that followed Monday’s revelation were even more interesting. Although TV channels had showed Vengsarkar making the sensational disclosure at a function in Jalgaon, when TOI contacted him, he vehemently denied making the statement. But Kapil Dev, the then captain, and Madan Lal, who was part of the squad, both separately confirmed to TOI that Dawood had indeed entered the dressing room. NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: A blast from the past rocked Indian cricket on Monday as former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar claimed that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim had entered the Indian dressing room on the eve of the Australasia Cup final in 1986. Dawood apparently offered a car to each player if they beat Pakistan the next day. The reactions that followed Monday’s revelation were even more interesting. The match itself is unforgettable for Indian cricket fans as it featured Javed Miandad’s lastball six, which took Pakistan to a famous victory. On TV, Vengsarkar was seen claiming that Dawood
walked into the dressing room a day before the match and made the offer. He added that Dawood was introduced by famous Bollywood comedian Mehmood. “Mehmood was in our dressing room. Kapil Dev was not there at that time because he had gone out to address the press conference. No one recognised Dawood but I had seen his photographs. Mehmood introduced him to us as a big businessman from Sharjah. He also said Dawood wanted to announce a prize for us. He said, ‘If you beat Pakistan tomorrow, everyone will get a car’. Jayawant Lele was our manager then. He asked if he would also get a car and Dawood confirmed that he would,” Vengsarkar said. However, when TOI contacted Vengsarkar, he denied the report. “This is all nonsense. I don’t know what the TV channels are up to. One news channel has recorded it and now other channels are picking it up. This is nothing but mischief and attempts to malign me. I have nev-

slams unbeaten half-century to take Mumbai close to win against Haryana Sachin Tendulkar on Monday slammed unbeaten halfcentury to take Mumbai closer to victory over Haryana in their Ranji Trophy 2013-14 opening match at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium.Chasing a target of 240 runs, Mumbai were 190 for five when the Little Master reached the half-century mark.Tendulkar hit four boundaries while facing 105 balls for his unbeaten 50, after a disappointing show in the first essay when he was cleaned up by Haryana pacer Mohit Sharma for five. This is the 19th half-century which Sachin has scored in Ranji Trophy, and his 115th overall in First-Class cricket. Defending champions Mumbai need a futher 50 runs to win.
Pak can move ahead of Proteas in ICC ODI rankings if win five-game series 3-2 Islamabad, Oct 29 (ANI): Pakistan can reportedly move ahead if South Africa on the ICC ODI Team Rankings if they win the upcoming five-game series against South Africa, beginning in Sharjah on Wednesday, by 3-2 or better. Pakistan, which is currently sitting in sixth position and four ratings points behind South Africa, can swap place with the African side and move into fifth position on 103 ratings points if they win the ODI series 3-2. According to the Daily Times, in contrast, South Africa will move to 107 ratings points if they win the series 4-1 and will narrow the gap with England and Sri Lanka to just four ratings points, adding that the gap will be trimmed to just one rating point if South Africa sweep the series against Pakistan. The ODI series against Pakistan offers South African vice-captain AB de Villiers an opportunity to overtake Hashim Amla at the top of the ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen, thereby regaining the number-one rank, the report added.
er said anything like this.” Kapil Dev confirmed the news, but denied that Dawood had offered cars to the team. “I remember someone had come to meet a team member, but I told him he is not supposed to be here because this is the players’ dressing room. He immediately said sorry and went away. Later, I was told his name, which I heard for the first time. I don’t really remember anything beyond that,” Kapil told TOI. Madal Lal too endorsed Kapil’s statement. “I don’t understand why Dilip has talked about it after so long. If I recall correctly, a gentleman entered the dressing room and Kapil drove him away. I came to know only later that he was Dawood. I don’t recollect anything about cars being promised as I was training.” Former Indian left-arm spinner Maninder Singh didn’t remember Dawood entering the dressing room, but recalled that the underworld don would attend parties along with the cricketers.
Australia are extremely keen to wrap up the seven-game ODI series here on Wednesday itself by winning the penultimate match in Jamtha and take an unassailable lead, left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty said today. "We have come here to win this game and we're not worried too much about Bangalore (venue of last game on November 2). At the moment we are worried about winning this game and wrapping it up on Wednesday," said Doherty today after the team's training session. Australia are 2-1 ahead in the rubber and India face a must-win situation here on October 30 to stay alive in the series."From our point of view this is the game we want to win. We don't want to save it for the last game on Sunday. We want to wrap up this game. Obviously from their (India's) point of view they need to win to stay alive and from that point, it is pretty crucial for them," said Doherty."We would rather be 3-1 up than 2-2 all. Both teams have played some very good cricket and it will be about who is better on Wednesday," he added. While conceding that bowlers from both teams have found the going tough, especially with the new ODI rule on field restrictions, Doherty averred that it was better to grin and bear it."It's been pretty tough going for all bowlers. Conditions have been tough. It's been a rude challenge. Still having 20-20 cricket with five out and bringing them in. That's the way it is suck it up and move on personally I will rather have five fielders," he said.
Ravichandran Ashwin reckons India under no pressure ahead of 6th ODI against Australia It may be a do-or-die encounter for India but off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin insisted that the home team was under no added pressure despite trailing Australia 1-2 ahead of the sixth and penultimate game of the ODI cricket series. “There is no pressure as such we are just going out and enjoying ourselves. This game is going to be crucial, so we just want to enjoy ourselves and see where we can take it. It has been a good and tight series so far,” said Ashwin ahead of the game at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha. India lost the first and third ODIs in Pune and Mohali, chased a huge score of 359 successfully in the second game at Jaipur, before the fourth and fifth matches in Ranchi and Cuttack respectively were washed out. The Indian bowling attack has been regularly carted around by the Australian batsmen, with captain George Bailey and opener Aaron Finch in an especially punishing mood. Ashwin, who too has been a disappointment so far, said every bowler has been trying to improve. “We are constantly looking to improve
as such. There are always areas that you can work on, constantly looking to improve on. I have been trying to work on bowling more and more because that’s the only way that you can get better. There is nothing as such to worry. The name of the game is to keep improving,” said the Chennai off-spinner. Asked about the way the visitors have upped the tempo in the middle and final overs, Ashwin said the Aussie batsmen had played some high risk shots and succeeded and it was a challenge for hi and others to counter. “It is the trend of the series. We have been chasing down big scores. We have chased down 360. The score has predominately been around 300. Any team that has batted first has predominately got around 300-run mark. “It’s definitely challenging in terms of what the batsmen are doing. They are going for their shots. They are playing the high risk shots, the credit needs to be given. But as I said we keep trying to devise different strategies and see what we can do.”
When questioned about the impact the ODI rule changes on field restrictions was having on the bowlers, the off-spinner said his focus was on trying to find ways to cope up with them as best as he could. “As I have already said, the demands of the game are such that you need to keep evolving as a cricketer. As long as the decision is not in my court, I cannot do anything about it. Whatever decision is being made I will have to try and cope with it. I am sure all cricketers are doing the same thing,” he said.Asked about the drop in fielding standards of the home team when compared to the triumphant run in the ICC Champions Trophy in England, Ashwin brushed it aside saying it was all part of the game “These things do happen. Batsmen do nick the first ball and it does happen in a game. As long as you are putting in the hard yards then you just have to be okay with it.” He said he was not a good reader of a cricket track when asked whether he expected the wicket to turn a bit, as predicted by rival spinner Xavier Doherty.
Ribery heads Bayern bloc in Messi world player challenge Newly-crowned European Football of the Year Franck Ribery will be hoping to end Lionel Messi’s domination of the world player award in the 2013 Ballon d’Or vote. Ribery joins Messi, winner for the past four years, on a list of 23 candidates named by football’s world governing body FIFA and France Football on Tuesday. The France midfielder is accompanied by Bayern Munich teammates Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Mueller, Arjen Robben and keeper Manuel Neuer on the list, reflecting a year in which Bayern won the Champions League and German league and cup double. The Hyderabadi shuttler, who is currently in Paris playing in the French Open, said the issue is affecting her performance.
Australia go into sixth ODI high on confidence against Team India, says Bailey Nagpur: With pressure squarely on India to stay alive in the sevenmatch ODI series, Australian skipper George Bailey today looked relaxed as he said that the visitors were going into the penultimate game here high on confidence. Australia are currently leading 2-1 and needed just one more victory to clinch the series, while India will have to win both their remaining games. “We are very happy to be 2-1 up. We have played some very good cricket. We look forward to tomorrow`s game. The three (fin-
ished) games have been outstanding. We are finding a lot of confidence at the moment. That stems from the way the tour has gone so far,” Bailey said at the pre-match press conference here. “I am quite happy most of the time. I am enjoying the tour. We are playing some good cricket,” he added. The ever-smiling Bailey has led from the front, having amassed 318 runs in the four innings he has batted so far in the best-of-seven rubber at a very impressive 100-plus average. Bailey, who has looked extremely
dominant against the Indian spinners, especially Ravichandran Ashwin, in the series, applauded his team`s batting. “We have been pretty consistent with our batting and probably most important is, we are clear about our roles over the last 6-7 games (going back to series v England),” said Bailey, who has been his side`s highest scorer by a long distance with 98 as his best effort so far. Austrlia has amassed 300-plus totals in three matches and a solid 295 in the rained-off fourth ODI at Ranchi. When reminded that the
Australian batting line up had come a cropper in the four-Test series earlier this year against Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who grabbed 29 and 24 wickets, respectively, Bailey said the tracks prepared for the Tests were different. “From what I have seen, it looks like the pitches have been very different to the ones during the Test matches though I was not part of that team (led by Michael Clarke which was whitewashed by India 4-0),” he said. The 31-year-old Bailey, who is averaging over 53 after 33 ODI ap-
pearances but is yet to figure in a Test for Australia, said when the squad was doing well there was no need to make many changes in the playing eleven.“You will not have the opportunity to do it every time (sticking to same team). It`s no surprise to pick players who have been doing well and not make many changes,” he said.Bailey sympathised with the bowlers who have been finding it difficult to bowl in the later stages of the innings due to the change in the ODI rule forcing an extra fielder inside the inner ring as compared to the earlier one.
