Srinagar, September 29: The Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) an amalgam of government employee unions and the cabinet subcommittee constituted by the government are at loggerheads with each other with both the sides showing no signs of any immediate agreement. Talking to KNS, Abdul Qayoom Wani, senior leader JCC spearheading the employees’ agitation in support of their pending demands, said: “Our demands are genuine and the government acknowledged the same many a times. We are striving for our demands in a democratic way and

we will never quit. We have been given warnings in past but these cautions are not going to deliver anything.” He added that EJAC has held an emergency meeting of its central, Provincial and district leaders in which the entire leadership was determined to face the ‘unjustified threats’ by the state Government. Wani said that the leaders at the helm in the Government behave as ‘Sultans’ and treat more than 4 lakh employees as ‘slaves ‘. Meanwhile, Farooq Ahmad Trali, JCC chief spokesman told KNS that the disagreement between the government

These decisions were taken today at a meeting of the party legislators held here under the chairmanship of the party president and leader Mehbooba Mufti. Addressing a joint press conference in Srinagar, State Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marx-

Governor inaugurates Safa Marwah Medical Centre Srinagar, September 29: N. N. Vohra, Governor, inaugurated Safa Marwah Medical Centre at Iqbal Colony, Soura, here last evening. This 50-bedded multi-storey hospital will have both Outpatient and Impatient Departments. Both of them had been working in Saudi Arabia for the past about 20 years. The Governor went around the

report of the government of India on the working of army in the state has exposed the extra constitutional methods adopted in Jammu & Kashmir to subvert democracy and political system, while the impact of the expose had hit severely the image of the entire political spectrum. The meeting felt that the matter must be discussed threadbare in the legislature so as to assert the democratic rights of the people and expose the real culprits who have brought bad name to the system. The meeting observed that the sanctity of the legislature itself was at stake unless the people knew all the facts about what has been happening behind the scene in the state.

The meeting expressed serious concern at the unabated killings in different parts of the state at the hands of government forces. The legislators felt that the government had failed in securing the life and dignity of the ordinary people and the recent massacres at Shopian, Gool and Markundal indicated that the situation has gone completely out of control of the government. They felt that the atmosphere of impunity prevailing under Omar Abdullah government made everybody in the state unsafe and insecure. The meeting also discussed the numerous incidents of killings by unknown gunmen, the recent See PDP on Pg. 7

on its soil and said that terrorist machinery has to be shut down if Pakistan is really serious to normalise the relations with India. He said that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and rejected the Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief’s demand to settle the issue on the basis of UN resolution. He said that India is ready to address and amicably settle all outstanding issues with Pakistan under the spirit of Shimla Agreement. He also reminded the world that terrorism is a great threat to the world peace and stability and hence the world community should stand together to wipe out the terrorism from every part it exists in. He has made a strong case for urgent reform of the UN Security Council to reflect current political realities by including more developing countries as both permanent and non-permanent members. Addressing the UN General Assembly, he also said multilateral financial institutions should give developing countries an enhanced voice in their decision-making structures. He said, multilateral efforts must guide the quest for peace and security wherever they are threatened and the centrality and contribution of the UN system to development must be restored. Dr. Singh said, growing scepticism about the UN's handling of peace and security issues underlined the necessity of reforms. Turning to Pakistan, Prime Minister made it clear that there can never, ever be a compromise on the territorial integrity of India of which Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part. In a hard-hitting speech, Dr. Singh asked Pakistan to shut down terrorist machinery on its soil. He reiterated that terrorism remains a grave threat to security and stability everywhere and extracts a heavy toll of innocent lives around the world. He said state-sponsored cross-border terrorism is of particular concern to India, more so on account of the fact that the epicenter of terrorism in our region is located in our neighbourhood in Pakistan. The 68th Session of UN General Assembly is being presided over by John .W. Ashe , former Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the UN, and is based on the theme “Post -2015 Development Agenda”. Addressing the delegates the Prime Minister pointed out that this theme is especially important as we deal with a lingering global economic slowdown and continuing volatility in financial markets. He pointed out that the problems of over a billion people living in abject poverty around the world need to be attacked more directly. Expressing concern over the disturbances in West Asia, particularly in Syria , the Prime Minister said the increasingly lethal conflict in that country is not only a tragedy for the people of Syria, but also threatens stability and security in the region and beyond. The use of chemical weapons must be condemned in the strongest terms. India supports strongly the elimination of chemical weapons material and equipment in Syria and believes that there must be a political solution to the problem.

member bills for the Autumn Session which will run for a week. Pertinently, the last date for the submission of the questions, bills and resolution for the Autumn Session was September 17, while the process was started on September 11. The Members were asked to submit 10 questions for the session-five each in starred and un-starred categories on or before September 17. The Autumn Session 2013-14 will start from September 30 and is expected to continue for 7 days. Meanwhile, in view of recent militant attacks security in and around the Assembly has been increased with elaborate security arrangements made by the government to prevent any untoward incident during the Assembly Session beginning from tomorrow. A senior government official wishing not to be named told KNS that a three-tier security has been put in place to prevent any militant attack during the 7-day Assembly session. “Tight security arrangements have been made in entire city including the areas in and around the Assembly complex to avoid any untoward incident. Additional deployment of personnel from police and para-military forces have been made to keep ‘trouble-makers away and ensure peaceful session,” he said. “Number of trained police constables will be posted in and around Assembly as a backup to the marshals to counter any untoward incident. A separate passage will be kept for the VVIPs while others would be allowed only after frisking and passing through the metal detectors. Meanwhile well informed sources told KNS that the entire security apparatus in the city has been geared up in view of

the inputs from the intelligence agencies that militants may sneak into the city. “Special instructions have been issued to the policemen and paramilitary forces to keep check on unregistered vehicles, private vehicles and a drive against two-wheelers have also been launched to ensure that militants are not able to breach the security ring.”

our employees and we also want to reach an agreement with JCC without any fuss. It is the government’s compassion for these employees that we have not invoked Supreme Court ruling against them for announcing protest programmes.” Regarding the JCC demands, the minister for medical education said that the government has already constituted a committee to look into pay anomaly issue and for regularization of causal labourers, the government has asked the department to furnish the requisite data which is yet to be received by the government. On the enhancement of retirement age, the minister said that the government had sought some time to decide about the matter keeping the complexity of the issue into consideration. Another cabinet minister, who is also in the subcommittee, when contacted by KNS said: “We have provided them (JCC) a bus, but unfortunately they have missed it. The government can go to any extent to deal with the protesting employees. We have many options available with us like service break, termination of services under Supreme Court rulings. The JCC is just crying hoarse for the vested interests of a few employees who are at the verge of their retirement.” The minister pleading anonymity said that the employees were testing government’s patience which according to him was running out. “It is this government which had conceded almost all demands of the employees and yet they are adamant to inflict miseries on the people,” he said. It may be recalled that on September 27, the meeting between JCC and the Government failed to reach any conclusion making the employee leadership to issue fresh protest calendar. Immediately after coming out from the meeting, JCC issued a fresh protest calendar calling for five-day protest demonstrations commencing from October 1. According to this protest calendar October 2, will witness candle light march by employees which will start from Sher-e-Kashmir Park and end at Chief Minister’s residence. On October 1, employees according to JCC protest calendar will protest in front of the secretariat while as the secretariat staff will protest inside the secretariat premises. On October 3, the employees will protest in front of the state assembly. Wani said that there will be a complete strike on October 4, 5. The meeting which failed to reach any conclusion was attended by senior cabinet ministers including Abdul Rahim Rather, Taj Mohi-ud-din, Ajay Sadotra, Sham Lal Sharma, Nawang Ringzin Jora and Ali Mohammad Sagar.

behind Gen Singh’s revelations and the misuse of the secret unit funds is unacceptable,” Tarigami said. He expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of action by Government of India and Defense Ministry after the leakage of the Army report that Gen V K Singh had allegedly set up the Technical Support Division (TSD) and misused the intelligence funds to overthrow the Omar Abdullah government in J&K. Tarigami demanded setting up of a time bound credible inquiry commission to be headed by a Supreme Court judge to unravel the truth. “We demand a time bound inquiry should be set up and a Supreme Court judge should oversee it to unveil the truth into the misuse of secret unit funds by Gen Singh and his subsequent hair raising revelations,” Tarigami, who was flanked by President Peoples Democratic Front, Hakim Muhammad Yasin, J&K National Democratic Front head Abdul Rashid Kabuli and Lok Janshakti Party Chief Sanjay Saraf, said. He also cautioned against interventions—covert or overt— by security apparatus in unraveling the truth behind the matter. “The importance of Gen Singh’s revelations can’t be brushed aside. People of J&K have every right to know the truth and the security apparatus should work within their circles,” said Tarigami. The revelations, Tarigami asserted have raised fingers and hurled accusations on the democratic process. He cautioned that any intervention in probing the truth by security apparatus would be dangerous for the democratic system here. “We would strongly raise the matter in the autumn session of J&K Legislative assembly starting tomorrow. In fact we are geared up to go for the target as whatever Gen Singh has revealed can’t be brushed aside,” Tarigami said. Tarigami dodged a question on the formation of Third Front, but, he, however said that 8 political parties have joined hands to create a separate group of like-minded people.

reveres is the case in our state and it has failed and proved a biggest threat for people. He said that incidents like that of Markundal and Gool are repeated one after the other and innocent and unarmed civilians are being killed brutally and on the other hand the residential houses are demolished without the consent of their proprietors . While lamenting at administration Geelani declared it a worst type of miss governance. Geelani said that clandestine demolishing has conveyed a wrong message about freedom movement and minorities outside state that they are not safe in Muslim dominated state and are forcibility deprived of their land and property. He assured of his full moral support and added that we won’t play any folly or politics over this issue. It is the greatness of our religion and as per commandments of Islam that we are obliged to honour minorities. The Pandit delegation thanked Hurriyat chairman for his the moral support and in a unanimous voice said that they salute selfless service provided by him and added that they are grateful for his moral support and were all praise and fascinated for his consistent approach. The members from minority community complained that the demolishing was done on the dictates of Local MLA and space allotted for shopping complex to his favourites. When they approached the concern MLA they were rebuked and asked to see the relief commissioner. They added that when they did not want to dispose of their prosperities then what is the fun to peruse the case or seek compensation for demolished structures. They told that neither the demolishing was done for construction of road nor for road widening.

Leave behind bitterness…

Move forward

O

ne can understand the anger and anguish of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who delivered the hard hitting speech in UN General Assembly. Criticising Pakistan and asking it to shut down ‘terrorist machinery’ on its soil while making it clear that there can never ever be a compromise on the territorial integrity of India of which he said that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part. The Prime Minister also made it clear that there can be no fruitful dialogue unless Pakistan stops aiding and abetting militants against India. Though his speech was clearly outburst due to recent happenings on the line of control and also in Jammu and Srinagar where many soldiers and civilians lost their lives, still going ahead with his scheduled meeting to decrease the tension with Mr. Nawaz Sharief shows that the leadership the two countries believe that all outstanding issues between the two countries can be addressed through a sustained dialogue only. It is not only the leadership but the people of both countries want cordial and friendly atmosphere in which both the countries can go ahead in every field of life. The past animosities have not yielded any positive results except weakening the two economies and huge loss of life and properties. Peace is imperative for the subcontinent and when subcontinent is peaceful, it will contribute to the world peace and stability. The meeting of two leaders whether in New York or at any place of the world should be guided by the sincerity, honesty and willingness to bring lasting peace by addressing all issues in such a way that there is no feeling of gain or loss. The two sides should not have a suspicion of betrayal or untrustworthiness at any stage and should march forward to resolve their problems amicably and without the interference, mediations or meddling by any other power or super power.

A dependent existence has no existence

L

Ashok Raina

earn by heart the precious expression of Russian scholar of oriental studies Theodo (Fyodor) Stcherbatsky which I enclose here it in quotes,” A dependent existence has no existence” the significant thought here is not just without reasons to utilize I once it again. The logic conception more strongly clears our position for equally we need to notice and defend otherwise we are all guilty of ignoring .Beside we have sufficient weight of argument against the unreasonable ethnicity contiguous and induce upon us in an ill will manner. Those who argue and claims that the Kashmiri Pandits are now well settled and become the self reliant are essentially long-suffering from the estimation of this thought “ dead dog laughing in a cloud” are the characteristics which often always implied by orthers. We do not erase the past but continuing the impact of settlement and customs created new tensions. The increasing pressures and undermining of traditional authority go much deeper than references to what went before that continues to have a devastating effect. These processes are proved often painful, troubled grounds for low growth rate to highest death rate among the community since their unfortunate exodus from the valley. The history of outstation movement of Kashmiri Pandits knows everyone is not necessary to recall but the continuing impact of settlement and unconcerned attitude of government including change in policy of government have produce tensions or divisions within a community. The debate on “settlement” necessitate to confront with keenness and frankly. Although land and what might be describe as “intellectual Property” were great significance but basically Kashmiri pundits did not have value of these things nowadays become totally dependent upon a meager amount of cash relief. So it

can easily to say that” A dependent existence has no existence”. Society, culture and religion- a process which is a continuing one, but on the other hand this pattern is not universal because and after all every man is born free but he where is in chains. Beside the rule of law the legitimate authority attempt and strive to make ineffective and be too intensive for all time by means of exercise their influence through the elected office holders. The example of “APEX COMMITTEE” is much sufficient for whole understanding what has been happened with the KP community at large. Those who are living in tattered tented accommodation from several years

These people continue to face difficult choices about their lives and their place in their own communities. Statistics on poverty and disadvantage are inadequate concerning the KP community. With whom I worked were shocked that the KP community have the lowest growth rate ,the lowest birth rate, the highest death rate, the worst health and housing and the lowest educational, occupational, economic, social and legal status of any identifiable section of the

India’s First Dedicated Navigational Satellite IRNSS-1A

W

ith the launch of IRNSS-1A satellite, India has joined a select group of nations with indigenously developed navigation systems. India’s first dedicated navigational satellite the IRNSS-1A developed by the ISRO was successfully put into orbit on the night of 1st July 2013.This is the first of the seven satellites of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). Overview of Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) IRNSS is an Independent regional navigation satellite system being developed by India. It is designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 Km from its boundary, which is its primary service area. The Extended Service Area lies between primary service area and area enclosed by the rectangle from Latitude 30 degree South to 50 degree North, Longitude 30 degree East to 130 degree East. IRNSS will provide two types of services, namely, Standard Positioning Service (SPS) which is provided to all the users and Restricted Service (RS), which is an encrypted service provided only to the authorized users. The IRNSS System is expected to provide a position accuracy of better than 20 metres in the primary service area. IRNSS consists of a space segment and a ground segment. The IRNSS space segment consists of seven satellites, with three satellites in geostationary orbit and four satellites in inclined geosynchronous orbit. Thus, IRNSS satellites revolve round the earth at the height of about 36,000 km from the earth's surface. IRNSS ground segment is responsible for navigation parameter generation and transmission, satellite control, ranging and integrity monitoring and time keeping. Applications of IRNSS include land, sea and air navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, integration with mobile phones, provision of precise time, mapping, navigation aid for hikers and travelers, visual and voice navigation for drivers. It can track people or vehicles and can be of immense use in disaster situations like the recent one in Uttarakhand. Even the

state population. Those who are more skilled in the ways and concepts of the wider community society than elders are being deprived on the change in settlement policy. The extent of past dislocation and dispossession is well document, but it is more difficult to assess its impact on current poverty and disadvantage among the common people of the community .However in comparison to1981 national population census the official record also indicates at present the vital numerical change in the population of KP community .Despite the several disadvantage factor the number of KP community families still in force to retain the life as dependent existence in several

Railways may find it useful to track its wagons. Apart from India, its benefits would extend to a range of 1500 km in the region. IRNSS-1A The satellite is based on ISRO's I1K satellite bus and has two solar panels with Ultra Triple junction solar cells that together generate about 1660 Watts of electrical power. A rechargeable Lithium ion battery of 90 Ampere-Hour capacity is also part of the power system of the satellite. Sun and Star sensors as well as gyroscopes provide orientation reference for IRNSS-1A. Special thermal control schemes have been designed and implemented for some of the critical elements such as atomic clocks of the satellite. The Attitude (orientation) and Orbit Control System (AOCS) of IRNSS1A maintains the satellite's orientation and its propulsion system consists of a Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) and 12 thrusters. After injection into the circular geosynchronous orbit, the satellite will be located at 55 degrees East longitude with an inclination of 29 degrees with respect to the equator. The mission life of IRNSS-1A is about ten years. IRNSS-1A was built at ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore with important contributions from VSSC, LPSU, IISU and Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS). Payloads IRNSS-1A carries two types of payloads – a navigation payload and a ranging payload. The navigation payload of IRNSS-1A will transmit navigation service signals to the users. This payload will be operating in 1.5 band (1176.45 MHz) and S band (2492.028 MHz). A highly accurate Rubidium atomic clock is part of the navigation payload of the satellite. The ranging payload of IRNSS1A consists of a C-band transponder which facilities accurate determination of the distance to the satellite (ranging). IRNSS-1A also carries Corner Cube Retro Reflectors for laser ranging. The other mission, launch of IRNSS 1B navigational satellite will be decided based on the performance and in-orbit testing of IRNSS-1A.

camps exists in across the country . There is much need of study and survey regarding the KP minority community people of Jammu and Kashmir. The displaced community has not been settled till date. More than 3 Lakh families were being forcibly removed from the valley, among them only 7,000 families were to be adjusted in the simple government accommodations in the different localities of Jammu region. Though the remaining exodus families induce the path of rummage sale of their property at their native land at a negligible rates

despite the restraining the sale deed Act of 1997. The income of per month of per head of the KP community has been fixed by the government of India 1250/(Rupees twelve hundred fifty) only in these much more price hike surroundings. Amazing is that the local state government recognized this community as temporary residents (As bolded typed in their home town ration cards) and not stand for any expenses upon these citizens during their mass migration from the valley. What the maintainers assert is totally incorrect and baseless as initiation the propagandas against the community is understood for all. No at all is prepared to brazen out the real state of affairs and position causes a grave concern among the community. The prevalence of the several diseases like diabetes, Hypertension thyroid, eye diseases, psychological, nerves and other physique problems has been estimated to be 15 times greater than for other nearby population. In some areas more than 77% of population relating to this community is adversely affected. Notwithstanding these circumstances the large number of the community people are facing power cuts for more than 18 hours cannot sleep or performing the normal activities in view of the major power cuts by the government and despite the repeated pleases with the government power supply has not been improved still yet. Jagti township of the displaced Kashmiri migrants is becoming a torture cell for its residents in absence of water and supply .The KP community in general face problems of inadequate housing, lack of water, sewerage ,transport, inadequate facilities for school going children, non arrangement for orphan, physically handicapped or militant victim effected children of the community. Social disruption and frequent conflict with the police and the courts are similarly part of fringe dwelling life. In short we can easily to say that “A dependent existence has no existence” at all.

NSFDC - Playing Important Role in Economic Development of Target Group

T

he Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing a number of schemes for development of Scheduled Castes and National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC) is playing an important role in economic development of the target group. The Corporation is active at National level and provides financial assistance ranging from 30,000/- to 30 lacs to entrepreneurs belonging to scheduled castes for setting up their own business ventures. NSFDC also provides 100% grant for skill development training programmes and also provide education loans to students for pursuing higher studies. The Corporation has assisted more than 8.50 lakh beneficiaries by providing loan of more than 2500 crore in last twenty four years. In the rapidly changing scenario in the World, empowerment of masses does not end with providing financial assistance for starting any business activity, but also involves inclusion of weaker sections in all spheres of development. Good education is one of the foremost requirements for getting employment or starting a self-employment venture. The youth of today needs financial assistance to follow their dreams of getting quality education and livelihood earning skills. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment assists the target-group by giving post-matric scholarships and national overseas scholarship for pursuing higher studies. As the present day education has become an expensive affair particularly if one is to study away from his/her home by staying in hostels, there is a need to fill the gaps in scholarship amount and the actual expenditure. NSFDC is playing a major role in meeting this requirement. Its Educational Loan Scheme has been drafted in such a manner so as to cover all items of expenditures and provide wide coverage of courses. Getting education from foreign universities by the students is also possible through NSFDC's Educational Loan Scheme. Further, it is very essential for young persons to be well trained in their chosen area of occupation. Self-employment or wage employment requires exhaustive skill development training. The Government has established number of institutions in the

country for imparting these trainings. In this endeavour, NSFDC has entered into partnership with many of such training institutions and are imparting short-term skill training programmes for the educated unemployed youth belonging to scheduled castes. All the expenses of such courses are being met by NSFDC. NSFDC also provides stipend of Rs.1,500/- per month to these trainees for meeting miscellaneous expenses. In the present business environment - schemes of providing finances for self-employment venture - care should be taken that forward and backward linkages to the business activity undertaken with financial assistance from NSFDC are

available so that beneficiary can increase their business in future by these linkages. The investment in the business should be sufficient to generate enough income, so as to make beneficiaries financially independent. The fund requirement should be met completely, so that beneficiaries need not look for supplementing their requirement from other sources. State Channelizing Agencies should also provide guidance to beneficiaries for running their business successfully and adopt an attitude of holding the hand of the beneficiary for a longer time. Efforts should also be made to bridge the gap between the rural, urban and semi-urban youth belonging to scheduled castes, in all fields.

How binge drinking harms your health

Men and women have different drinking capacities and being drunk slows down your reaction time and ability to process information. Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany says that binge drinking is a common pattern of excessive alcohol use and refers to drinking heavily over a short period of time with the intention of getting drunk, resulting in immediate and severe intoxication. “The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) to 0.08 grams per cent or above. This typically happens when men consume five or more drinks, and when women consume four or more drinks, in about two hours,” she says. Obesity surgeon Dr Manish Motwan says that binge drinking is most common among 16 to 24-year-olds. “Consuming large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time is getting very popular today but can have several consequences,” he says. How harmful is binge drinking? Possible increased risk of neurological disorders, heart problems, memory loss, sexual problems (especially male impotency). Risk of developing emotional problems such as depression, problems at college or work

and issues within relationships. Changes in mood and executive function can alter behaviour in ways that could promote progression to alcohol dependence. Acute psychological complications and

Abstaining from drinks all week and getting drunk on the weekend is not as good an idea as you think it is.

Nutrition therapist Purwa Duggal says that binge drinking can have adverse effects on the body since it raises the persons’ alcohol blood concentration level. “Alcohol intoxication can be harmful for several reasons - it can impair brain function resulting in poor judgment, reduced reaction time, loss of balance and motor skills or slurred speech. Dilation of blood vessels causing a feeling of warmth but actually resulting in rapid loss of body heat is a common effect. There is also an increased risk of certain cancers, stroke and liver diseases. Damage to a developing foetus is also possible if consumed by pregnant women. There is also an increased risk accidents, violence, and other injuries,” she says.

Is binge drinking worse than drinking everyday?

mental processing is impaired when a person engages in binge drinking episodes.

The nature and severity of the problem depends on how frequently it occurs and how long is it maintained. Though daily heavy drinking is known to have a greater health impact than binge episodes, excessive drinking in either forms may cause health problems, such as liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, high blood pressure and unintentional injuries, etc.

Addicted to pills? Dr Parul R Sheth says that overthe-counter (OTC) medications or non-prescriptions drugs are generally safe when taken exactly as instructed on the label or packaging. “While they do get rid of aches and pains, there are side effects and risks attached. These medications can cause acid reflux, heartburn, problems with certain medical conditions, may interact with food or other medications, all which can be dangerous. If you happen to misuse OTC pills, you may end up with stomach ulcers, kidney damage, liver damage, heart attacks or even strokes in the long run,” says Dr Parul. According to physician Dr Abhay Shirkhande, people can get addicted to all sorts of medicines - pain killers, antidepressants, sedatives, antacids or even a cough syrup. “In a majority of the cases, the addiction starts when people start treating themselves. The easy availability of drugs over the counter without prescription or governmental control is another reason for this addiction. Many times ignorance about side effects makes people consume such medicines for longer periods of time,” says Dr Shirkhande. Don’t self-prescribe medicine When you self-prescribe drugs like an-

tidepressants, sleeping pills or an antibiotic, it can be potentially harmful especially when you’re unaware of the specific compound that goes in it, the required dosage or how long you need to take the medication. “It is unwise to self-diagnose because medications can have side effects, which can cause more trouble than cure you,” says Dr

pills include heartburn, nausea, stomach ulcers, ringing sensation in ears, worsening of asthma, skin rashes, blood disorders, stomach upsets, drowsiness, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, liver problems, hair loss, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, impotence, inability to sleep, constipation etc. Treatment Dr Shirkhande says that an addict first has to undergo complete detoxification to get rid of toxins in the body. “There is a noticeable improvement in the condition once this is done. The second step is to exercise self control and make lifestyle changes. This includes going on a healthy diet and exercising. Meditation, running, yoga, walking, etc. are good practices. Seek the help of an expert to help overcome your addiction. Group therapy is another option, where you can talk to people suffering from the same problem. Sharing understanding, supporting and encouraging each other can be of great help,” he ends. Symptoms of addiction You have strong cravings for the medication.Your drug use has become compulsive and you’re taking more than the prescribed dose.

Cholesterol has cancer fighting goodness? In a new study, scientists have argued that cholesterol may slow or stop cancer cell growth. The study, which includes a Simon Fraser University researcher, describes how cholesterol-binding proteins called ORPs may control cell growth in A Detour for Yeast Oxysterol Binding Proteins. The scientists came to their conclusion while trying to understand how cholesterol moves around inside cells in the fat’s journey to cell surfaces where it reinforces their outer membrane. “The assumption was that ORPs bind and transport cholesterol inside cells in a similar fashion to how lipoproteins bind and move around the fat outside cells through the blood stream,” Chris Beh, said. Beh and his colleagues noted that genetic changes

engineered by them block the ability of ORPs to bind cholesterol but don’t stop ORPs from functioning. In fact, these altered ORPs work better and activate other regulator proteins, which in turn trigger a variety of cellular processes

that stimulate cell growth. The scientists believe this happened because cholesterol-binding normally interferes with ORPs’ ability to bind to another lipid or fat called PI4P, which is important for cell growth. “That told us that ORPs probably have nothing to do

Benefits of mustard seeds

Body hurts? Something doesn’t feel right? How easy it is to reach out and pop some pills to get soothing relief. But here’s the catch - self prescribing pills may end up doing you more harm than good.

Mustard seeds have been around since almost 5,000 years. They’re known to have numerous benefits since they’re low in calories and high in nutritional value and have a lot of antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.

Parul. Consultant physician Dr Pradip Shah says that several times confusion with medicine names can lead to wrong medication and serious ill effects. “Most painkillers contain Acetaminophen, which when taken in high doses causes acute liver failure. Certain painkillers lead to kidney damage, cause constipation, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease,” he says. Problems In the long run, women who are addicted can have irregular and prolonged menstruation. Other side effects of indiscriminate use of

They’re available in different varieties - black mustard, white mustard and brown Indian mustard, in whole as well as in powdered form. Mustard oil is known to be great for the skin because it generates warmth. Mustard seeds are rich in a nutrient called selenium, known for its high anti-inflammatory effects. n The high source of magne-

sium in mustard seeds helps reducing the severity of asthma attacks and certain symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and lowering blood pressure. Suffer from migraines? Mustard seeds are known to

with moving around cholesterol within cells. “Rather cholesterolbinding puts the brakes on ORP’s ability to bind to PI4P which, if left unchecked, could accelerate cell growth like crazy. “Given that uncontrolled cell growth is a key feature of cancer, this means gaining a better understanding of the true purpose of cholesterol-binding within cells could be important in cancer treatment,” he said.Beh and his colleagues draw on two important facts to support their conclusion. “First, cancer cells require ORPs to survive. “Second, other scientists have previously shown that a new class of natural compounds that look like steroids or cholesterol can kill a broad spectrum of different cancer cells,” he added.

Exercises to burn 200 calories daily! There is nothing better than being in great physical shape. You look attractive to yourself, and to your partner, not to mention how you light up every party. So look and feel on top of the world by trying out these exercises which will help you burn at least 200 calories daily. Qigong: These exercises involve various breath control techniques, meditation and relaxation. It is similar to pranayama. While doing Qigong, the practitioner spends little energy, but at the end of a session there is profuse perspiration, little elevation in blood pressure, but increased levels of energy. Budokon: If you enjoy yoga but are also in love with the high-intensity kickboxing class across the hall, try a fusion class like Budokon (bu-do-kon) and get hip with the Hollywood crowd.

A headacheis NOT a HEADACHE!

There are days when you barely pay any attention to that headache and then there are days when you feel like it could kill you. 'Headache' is an umbrella term

under which many kinds exist. For the various types - migraine, cluster, tension-type, ice cream and symptomatic - there are different kinds of treatments. For instance, acute pain can be treated by a simple analgesic or painkiller, as prescribed by a doctor. However, it is essential to address the root cause of the pain, as it will reoccur if not treated properly. Dr Sangeeta Ravat, Head of Neurology department, KEM, tells us how to distinguish one headache from another. While you take aid of prescribed medicines, here are a few home remedies.

Migraine Migraine is a severe headache

type and can have a considerable impact on the daily life of sufferers. It may occur in half of the head called the hemi cranial; this is usually preceded by an aura or the premonitory system. "You may see a coloured halo or bright light, which is called a visual aura. The character of the headache is throbbing. It feels as if someone is hammering your headache along with nausea and vomiting. The migraine patient tends to be photophobia (more sensitive to light) and phonophobia (more sensitive to noise). They cannot bear bright light and loud music. They can't even tolerate people talking loudly. It's that bad,"

says Ravat. TRIGGERS: Migraines can be genetically linked. However, disturbed sleep pattern, emotional meltdown, hormonal disturbances, physical exertion, weather changes, strong odour, smoking, poor eating pattern, consumption of alcohol, artificial sweeteners, too much caffeine, and food such as nuts, chocolates, and cheese may further exacerbate the migraine problem. RELIEF: Apart from medicines prescribed by the doctor, the herb Kava is known to be a very useful alternative for migraine. Its properties allow a sedative feeling and relax the mind. These effects reduce migraine headaches as well as improve sleep. Garlic is also a strong detoxifier.

but unlike migraine, this could go on continuously for two weeks without any symptom free period," says Ravat. Triggers: There is genetic susceptibility and is caused due to neu-

Tension-type This is perhaps the most common

type of primary headache. It is a nonspecific headache, which is not vascular related to organic disease.

Cluster

Cluster headache is an excruciating condition that is rare. It is characterised by frequently recurrent, short lasting headache and autonomic symptoms. Cluster headache type is easily recognisable. The episodic form occurs in bouts (clusters). A sort of unilateral intense pain around the eye develops once or more daily, commonly at night. This headache type is sudden in onset and can last for almost three hours and can occur between once a day, and sometimes even eight times a day. The eye is red and waters, the nose runs or is blocked on that side, and ptosis (drooping eyelid) may occur. As the name suggests this sort of pain, which stems from the migraine family, occurs in a cluster. "It may last for almost two weeks and may occur twice or thrice a year,

rotransmitter imbalance. Relief: There is no relief unless you seek medical advice. "In the case of cluster headaches, the doctor may have to give certain steroids and stronger painkillers to relieve the patient. Nasal oxygen mask can relief the attack, as the oxygen saturation of the blood improves and the brain is able to get more oxygen. In migraine, the blood vessels are in spasm. If the spasm is severe, the area of the brain may suffer from lack of blood supply that may lead to some neurological deficit. It's essential to consult your doctor," says Ravat.

It is related to muscle tightening in the back of the neck and/or scalp. There are two general classifications of tension-type headache: episodic and chronic, differentiated by frequency and severity of symptoms. Episodic tension-type headache occurs randomly and is usually triggered by temporary stress, anxiety, fatigue or anger. Withdrawal from the source of stress or a relatively brief period of relaxation or meditation can help relieve the pain. On the other hand, chronic tension-type headache is a continuous

headache, which may have some variability in the intensity of the pain during a 24-hour cycle. Both are characterised as dull, aching and non-pulsating pain and affect both sides of the head. Symptoms for both types are similar and may include muscles between head and neck contract, a tightening band-like sensation around the neck and/or head. The pain primarily occurs in the forehead, temples or the back on head and/or neck. Ravat says, "But unlike migraine, this type of pain is less severe. It is also known as muscle contraction tension headache. It is very common among young professionals who have stressful jobs." Triggers: Emotional as well as physical stress cause tension-type headache. There could be an underlying psychological illness such as depression and anxiety. That apart, spending too much time in front of the television and computer can also generate this kind of headache. Relief: It is advisable for people who have stress-related headaches to practise breathing exercises. Take three deep breaths, all the way in and all the way out, slowly. This works, especially, when you feel a headache coming on. Meditate, as it helps to relax the body and stop the headache. Identify stressors in your life and learn to steer clear from it.

Ice-cream headache This headache occurs briefly, but

the throbbing headache may occur after you eat food that is icy cold. Some people also describe ice cream headaches as brain freeze effects, which

are a result of having ice cream, slushy drinks, golas and other frozen food. Even though the pain that is experienced during an ice cream headache is intense, these headaches are rarely serious. This typically happens among young as well as middle aged people when they've eaten something cold. Sometimes, ice-cream headache involves one eye and bruised after the pain has gone. Triggers: Consuming cold food such as ice-cream, ice-candies or golas can trigger the pain. Some patients find cold foods trigger the pain. While anybody can suffer from ice cream headaches, people who suffer from migraine are more prone to them. People who have had a prior head injury are also more likely to experience ice cream headaches, as compared to the others. Relief: There is no particular remedy or treatment for ice cream headache. Normally, soon after you consume the food or the drink that has caused the problem, the problem subsides. If you're prone to this, avoid cold food altogether.

Symptomatic headache It is a headache, which is sec-

ondary to another organic condition such as meningitis, intracranial tumours, and subarachnoid haemorrhage (headache is often described as the worst ever, and is usually but not always) of sudden or ictal onset. Neck stiffness may take hours to develop. In elderly patients particularly, classic symptoms and signs may be absent. Ravat says, "In this case, along with the excruciating pain, the person may also have frequent bouts of blackouts as well as projectile vomiting." Triggers: Since the headache here serves as a signpost to a bigger problem, it is imperative to investigate the cause of the pain problem or disease.

N Srinivasan re-elected as BCCI president; packs board with loyalists

Agencies

Chennai: Brushing aside intense criticism and questions of probity, N Srinivasan was elected unopposed as BCCI President for a third year during the Board’s AGM here today even though he will not take charge till further orders from the Supreme Court. Srinivasan was the lone Presidential candidate put forward by the South Zone, from where he got the proposer and the seconder. The AGM asserted Srinivasan’s supremacy in India’s richest sporting body with not even a single voice of dissent being heard during the proceedings of the day. But he can resume his duties only after the Supreme Court gives its final verdict on the case filed against his candidature by the Cricket Association of Bihar secretary Aditya Verma. Srinivasan was elected unopposed. Reuters The choice of the various sub-committees bore ample testimony to Srinivasan’s stranglehold on the organisation as all the executive functionaries as well as the heads of the important panels are perceived to be close to the Chennai strongman. Srinivasan’s election was on expected lines despite the fact that he had his back

against the wall on the issue of propriety after his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was charge-sheeted in the IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. Srinivasan’s company India Cements owns Chennai Super Kings. In another important decision, Ranjib Biswal, the Odisha Cricket Association chief, was named the IPL chairman, a post left vacant by Rajiv Shukla, who decided to resign at the end of his tenure this year Biswal, a former India under-19 captain and first-class cricketer, was the manager of the Indian team during the 2011 World Cup triumph and was also a former chairman of the National Cricket Academy. Among other important positions,

Sneh Bansal (north), Ravi Savant (west) and Rajiv Shukla (central) have replaced Arun Jaitley, Niranjan Shah and Sudhir Dabir as vice-presidents. Shivlal Yadav and Chitrak Mitra have retained their vice-presidency from south and east zone respectively. While Jaitley has relinquished his post owing to political commitments in view of the upcoming general elections, Shah and Dabir have been dumped for their perceived closeness to Srinivasan’s adversaries Sharad Pawar and Shashank Manohar. Sanjay Patel and Anirudh Chaudhury have been named the BCCI Secretary and Treasurer respectively. These positions were laid vacant when Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke resigned in the aftermath of the IPL betting scandal. BCCI elections: Dalmiya left in cold Agencies He had bailed out N. Srinivasan at his most critical juncture but former ICC and BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has been left in the lurch if the various sub-committees formed at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday is any indication. The veteran administrator has been re-named as the chairman of the North East Development Committee considered to be one of the least active subcommittees. In fact three of Dalmiya’s junior colleagues in Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) were given better committees than the former BCCI top boss. CAB joint secretaries Subir Ganguly and Sujan Mukherjee were inducted into the all-powerful IPL governing council and NCA sub-committees respectively. Treasurer Biswarup Dey has been elevated from NCA sub-committee to finance committee under Gokaraju Gangaraju of Andhra CA. “Ideally, Mr. Dalmiya shouldn’t have accepted the post of North East development

Phadke has been entrusted with the responsibility of heading the media committee. DDCA’s Ravi Jain has been named the vice-chairman of the media committee. Incidentally, Gangaraju and Phadke were in Srinivasan’s opposition camp but changed allegiance for which he was suitably rewarded. The maximum duration of time was spent on deciding upon the name of the IPL Chairman, a lucrative but honorary position which requires a lot of travelling and liasioning with franchises and their owners. Not all the east zone units were in favour of Biswal but finally agreed on his name after the favoured choice Jagmohan Dalmiya was ruled out due to his age, which would have hampered his functioning in the demanding job. However, Cricket Association of Bengal has been suitably rewarded for backing Srinivasan with their Joint Secretary Subir Ganguly finding a place in the IPL Governing Council. Apart from this, CAB Treasurer Biswarup Dey has been inducted into the powerful finance committee. Former India stumper Chandrakant Pandit has been replaced by former Baroda opener Connor Williams as the chairman of the under-19 selection committee.

Star batsman Yuvraj Singh is all set to make a comeback into India’s limited overs squad following some good performances when the selectors meet in

Nadu strongman. Dalmiya was made the interim chief of the BCCI when Srinivasan decided to step aside in the wake of IPL-6 spot-fixing scandal and the subsequent arrest of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who has been chargesheeted by Mumbai Police for illegal betting. However, there is no denying the fact that Bengal no longer holds the same influence among the eastern units and the astute businessman in Srinivasan cashed in on that by naming Biswal the chief of the IPL governing council.

Brendon McCullum, the Otago Volts skipper, put Highveld Lions in to bat in their Champions League Twenty20 Group A contest at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday (September 29) afternoon.Otago, who have six points from two matches, are sitting on an unbeaten 14-match streak, and made no changes to the team that crushed Perth Scorchers by 62 runs in their previous game. Explaining his reasoning behind opting to chase, McCullum said, “The wicket looks a little different from the last time we played here, it is a bit more green and looks a touch soft on top.”Otago came unbeaten through the qualifiers of the Champions League and have set stall for a semifinal place. “We had a successful campaign back home and we have started this tournament well,” McCullum said. “We have some good players, there is a lot of experience and we have played a lot together as a group. This is a

chance for us to show our wares on the international stage. We have acquitted ourselves well so far but it’s a big test today and we will have another big test in a couple of days (against Rajasthan Royals).” The Lions have been disappointing so far, their only points from two matches played coming from a washout against Perth. “It has been difficult throughout,” admitted Alviro Petersen, the skipper. “We have had only 12 or 13 players to select from, and for this game also, we could only choose from 12 players. We know we have to finish well in the league stage to make it to the semifinals. We have to win well to give us an opportunity, but that is only in the second half.“We must bat well in the first half. The pitch looks like it will do a bit, we have to get runs on the board. If we can get through the first six overs without too much damage, hopefully we can build on that.”The Lions suffered a setback when Neil McKenzie, the experienced batsman, was ruled out through injury.

Davids helps Titans stroll to win Agencies RANCHI: Titans gave their chances of progressing quite a boost with a thumping victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad here at the JSCA International Stadium on Saturday. Shikhar Dhawan and Parthiv Patel were belting some wayward bowling from Titans around in a rapid half-century opening stand but Sunrisers’ middle-order frailty was exposed and, this time, their bowlers failed to bail them out. Captain Henry Davids and Jacques Rudolph were involved in what was only the second century stand of the main tournament, as Titans chased down 146 without breaking a sweat. Davids took the early initiative, hitting six boundaries

through though he couldn’t secure a half-century. Victory was sealed in the 17th over, with eight wickets to spare.

led squad that has performed admirably winning the Champions Trophy and triseries in the West Indies, the return of the stylish 31-year-old left-hander is all but certain. Yuvraj last played for India on January 27 against England at Dharamsala and was dropped subsequently due to a poor run of form. Having undergone a rigorous physical training in France, a fitter Yuvraj made his comeback into the competitive cricket with a bang scoring 123, 40 and 61 in three List A matches against the West Indies A followed by a quickfire 52 against the same opponent in a T20 game. He carried on with his good form in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy where he scored 84 against India Red and a 29 in the final.According to reliable sources, the selection committee is impressed in the manner Yuvraj has scored. Agencies Sachin Tendulkar has been the face of the Mumbai Indians since its inception. For six seasons he has been Mumbai’s batting mainstay. Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) 2013 is the last assignment for Tendulkar as far as the shortest format of the game is concerned. Sarang Bhalerao takes a detailed statistical look at Tendulkar’s career in numbers for the Mumbai Indians. It was envisaged to be young man’s game. delivery of the innings, Chand went back to the pavilion soon for six in the third over of the game that left Delhi in a bit of bother. Delhi’s woes increased when their in-form batsman Sehwag was cleaned up by R Vinay Kumar for five, and Kohli, who managed to spend sometime at the crease scoring 23 runs, had a mixup with Milind while taking a run and was run out in the 10th over that left Delhi reeling at 46 for four. Earlier in the match, despite regular breakthroughs from Delhi’s Rajat Bhatia (four for 59) and Parvinder Awana

While Yuvraj will be the sixth specialist batsman in the playing XI that is likely to have Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja as the spin-bowling all-rounders. The choice for three pace bowlers slot will be Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. One among the trio of Jaydev Unadkat, Mohit Sharma and R Vinay Kumar will be the reserve pacer in the line-up. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra is expected to be the reserve spinner having got 18 wickets in the series against Zimbabwe. His challenger Perveez Rasool, who recently had a match-haul of seven wickets in an unofficial ‘Test’ against the West Indies ‘A’, might find it tough to make it into the squad as Ashwin is all set to return after being rested during the Zimbabwe tour. The 14th and the 15th slots are the ones which will be up for grabs. While Dinesh Karthik might be retained in the squad of 15, it will be interesting whether Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar is considered as a replacement for Irfan Pathan.Dhoni has long wanted an all-rounder who bowls medium pace. While Irfan fitted his bill perfectly.

Team India’s ‘lucky’ manager Ranjib Biswal named IPL chief

Agencies A witness to some of India’s most memorable triumphs in recent years, long-serving team manager Ranjib Biswal was today appointed chairman of the IPL in the BCCI’s AGM in Chennai. Biswal has been with the Indian cricket team through some of its mostmemorable triumphs, including the 2011 50-over World Cup win at home. Chief of the Odisha Cricket Association, Biswal’s appointment to replace Rajiv Shukla, who resigned at the end of his tenure, was made after a long deliberation at a city hotel. The decision to appoint the IPL chairman took the longest time in the Annual General Meeting, given that veteran Jagmohan Dalmiya’s name was doing the rounds before the AGM. But Dalmiya’s age, 73, would have put him at a disadvantage in the demanding job. The 43-yearold Biswal, however, would be better-equipped to deal with the week-after-week city-hopping during the IPL.

form of cricket. A boundary meant a carnival-like atmosphere in the stands; a six ensured your entry in the list of batsmen who could turn the game on its head. Yet conventional strokeplay was effective, it made the people realise cricket needn’t be slam-bang. Sachin Tendulkar is amongst those who have carved a niche for themselves in the Twenty20 format and he is still exploring newer ways to score runs albeit this is his final assignment with the Mumbai Indians franchise. Tendulkar has scored a century for Mumbai Indians against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2010 aged 38. He has scored 14 half-centuries and one ton for Mumbai.

Riding on Manish Pandey’s knock of 62 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s four-wicket burst, India Blue registered a comprehensive win by 50 runs over Delhi in the final of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy 2013, at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday. Chasing a daunting total of 275 to win, Delhi’s starstudded top order flopped in the big game from which they could never really recover in the game, and were bowled out for 224 in 44.4 overs. Milind Kumar fell after scoring 54 while Puneet Bisht remained unbeaten on 54 but their efforts went in vain. It was due to a flop show from the Delhi’s top order consisting Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Unmukt Chand that left Delhi under immense pressure in the crucial tie. While Gambhir fell after scoring four on the fourth

(four for 39), India Blue reached 274 for nine in the final of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy 2013. An important half-century from Manish Pandey (62) and vital contributions from Ankit Bawne (37) and Piyush Chawla (44) down the order helped their side post a good total. Openers Akshath Reddy and Naman Ojha had a confident start. Both batsmen looked set to make big scores before Ojha played on a length delivery from Parwinder Awana to give the opposition their first wicket in the 12th over. A few overs later, Reddy followed suit as he was foxed by a slower one from Rajat Bhatia. This was Bhatia’s first ball off his spell. With Yuvraj Singh and Manish Pandey in the middle, another big partnership was brewing.

India Blue win NKP Salve Challenger Trophy 2013 with 50-run victory

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants his bowlers to improve performance in death overs even as he lauded his spinners and batsmen after qualifying for the semifinals of the Champions League. CSK bowlers conceded 50 runs in the last three overs to let Brisbane Heat off the hook. “Death bowling is still an area we need to improve, but it is tough for every team. We thought we would be chasing 120-odd runs, but the chase was very well done with the help of Raina, Hussey and Vijay,” Dhoni said after they beat Brisbane by eight wickets. “I think Jadeja will keep improving, the more games he plays, Ashwin is one of the smarter spinners we have, Raina knows what needs

to be done,” he added. “I think it was a very good performance, for the spinners there was a fair amount of dew, it gripped a bit for them, but they bowled superb lengths.” Man-of-the-Match Michael Hussey, who scored unbeaten 57, said Ashwin deserved the Mom award. “I’m a bit embarrassed to be here actually, I thought Ashwin was a good shout for Man of the Match. The spinners did a great job. Excellent conditions here, I’ve really enjoyed the stadium and the crowds as well. To get through to the semifinals was the first goal, and it is great to be there,” he said. Opener Murali Vijay said it is always good experience to bat alongside Hussey, with whom

he shared a 75-run stand for the first wicket in CSK chase. “There was good bounce in the wicket, and dew around. I just wanted to time the ball rather than hit it. I’m trying to learn as much as I can from Hussey. We are playing good cricket at the moment,” he said. As Heat are knocked out of the tournament, Heat skipper James Hopes said the event has served to them as an eyeopener. “We lost our way in the middle of the innings, the batsman haven’t done the job again. We had made 50-odd in six overs that usually sets you up for 160. It’s a steep learning curve to be here, and a bit of an eye-opener. We can play with a great deal of freedom in the final game,” Hopes said.
