PM holds opposition responsible for current economic situation New Delhi, August 30: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today held the opposition responsible for the current economic situation in the country. He said the disruptive politics pursued by the main opposition party for the last nine years is responsible for several important legislations being stalled. He was replying to clarifications sought by members on his statement in the Rajya Sabha today. Dr Singh said this has made domestic investors losing confidence. He said consensus-building is the responsibility of both the government and the prin-

cipal opposition. Dr Singh said it has been unheard of in any country where the opposition comes into well of the House and obstructs Prime Minister from speaking. He remarked that the disruption of Parliamentary proceedings, session after session, sends wrong signal to foreign investors. Dr Singh said no doubt, there is a problem but it can be resolved only if the opposition allows Parliament to function. On corruption, he said there are courts and committees

to deal with the menace and the opposition should not disrupt the proceedings on this issue. The Prime inister made it clear that the government has no intention to protect any person, who is found guilty. On missing coal files, Dr. Singh said that he is not the custodian of the files. Earlier, making a statement in both the Houses of Parliament, the Prime Minister said the country’s economic growth will pick up in the second half of the current fiscal and sought cooperation from all sec-

tions to support the government in its efforts to revive the economy. Dr Singh said the government decisions on the stalled projects will start bearing fruits. He said the full effect of the growthfriendly measures will lead to higher growth, particularly in the manufacturing sector. He said the country has the more difficult reforms to do such as reduction of subsidies, insurance and pension reforms, eliminating bureaucratic red tape and implementing Goods and Services Tax. Dr Singh said these are not low hanging fruit and need political consensus. The See PM on Pg. 11

Salamabad-Chakoti BMO office Magam approved tender Ambika-Azad to review LoC Traders Union in favour of a blue-eyed company performance of ministers, suspends trade MLAs, MLCs It was Board Decision: BMO Srinagar, August 30: Salamabad-Chakoti LoC Traders Union Friday decided to suspend trade till indefinite period against the alleged hurdles being created by Customs Department at the Salamabad check post. “They don’t allow us to carry smooth trade. We took the decision after a meeting of all the traders at Salamabad Uri on Friday,” president of the Union Nazir Ahmad Lone told KNS.

On Thursday he had alleged that Chief Conservator Forests (CCF) Kashmir Nisar Darzi was also creating hurdles in smooth conduct of their business due to which they were suffering losses. ”Since 2008, when the trade started, we were importing minor forest produce (MFP) from other side of the LoC. Magam, August 30: Throwing all norms to winds, Block Medical Officer Magam who was promoted as Chief Medical Officer on Thursday approved the tender of a particular company without letting other companies know about the installation of an X-ray plant in Sub-District Hospital Magam. BMO, Magam, G.M.Dar made a mockery when he issued a tender notice on July 27 this year in a local Daily vide number BMOM/976 seeking installation of 300mA X-ray

plant in the hospital from different companies. However, the irony was that the BMO in his tender notice had mentioned the name of specific brand ‘Wipro GE’ indicating that tender notice was just a formaility while the BMO had already allotted the job to the distributor of the said company. Leading medical equipment suppliers sought reason from the BMO and asked him why a specific tender notice was issued for an equipment which can be supplied by a number of other companies. Sensing trouble, Block

Medical Officer issued another notice in the local Daily declaring that said tender notice stands cancelled. “Though he cancelled the said tender notice but we were sure that he had already allotted the job to Wipro GE in lieu of heft bribe. It was a slight mistake on his part that his ill designs came to fore,” an equipment supplier told CNS. Another supplier said that the first tender notice was given in the local Daily by the distributor of Wipro GE company instead of being given by the BMO See Tender on Pg. 11

Srinagar, August 30: All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and incharge J&K affairs Ambika Soni and Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad who reached Jammu on Friday are set to review the party’s performance in a high level meeting on Saturday. All Congress ministers, legislators, MLAs and MLCs are scheduled to attend the meeting. A senior Congress minister who wished not to be named told KNS that 180 delegates including former Sadr-e-Riyasat of Jammu

and Kashmir Dr Karan Singh and former president of State Congress Ghulam Rasool Kar will attend the meeting. The main agenda of the meeting is to review overall performance of Congressmen in Jammu and Kashmir and the future strategy, he said. Meanwhile, if the sources within the party are to be believed, a number of Congress ministers and legislators will raise demand for apology from National Conference Additional General Secretary Dr. Mustafa Kamal for his remarks against Congress and its leadership.

Trump of truth A poor doctor gets justice after 8 years, thanks to the efforts of a young Kashmiri advocate Srinagar: August 30: It was after a long drawn legal battle and the dedication of a young lawyer from Kashmir that Shahnaz Dar who was abandoned by everybody and left in Lurgh by Board of School Education, won his case in Medical Council of India after about 8 years of struggle. It was due to a blunder committed by Board of School Education which almost finished the

career of this young doctor who completed his MBBS from Russia in 2006. He was issued a temporary registration by the Medical Council of India in 2006 only to be cancelled by the same organization without even giving an opportunity to the young man to be heard. The reason cited by Medical Council of India was that the Board of School Education upon verification of records by Medical Council of India claimed that 10+2

marks sheet submitted by Shahnaz was fake, the stand which was later back tracked by Board of School Education in the hon’ble J&K High Court . Dr. Shahnaz who filed a writ petition in the hon’ble High Court challenging the order of cancellation of his provisional certificate won the case. The Medical Council of India was not ready to give up and filed an appeal challenging the order of single judge before the division bench.

The division bench also decided in favour of Shahnaz but Medical Council of India did not implement the order even after a lapse of about 2 years. Dr. Shahnaz then approached an NGO called ‘Shafa’ whose president Suhail Malik, a lawyer took up the challenge and filed various civil and criminal cases against the Medical Council of India officials in New Delhi and through a Advocate Syed Riyaz filed a contempt petition in

J&K High Court. The Medical Council of India had no alternative but to succumb to the right full fight of the young lawyer Suhail Malik and ultimately issued the registration to the doctor who had no means of income and had to feed his family and his ailing father who is suffering from cancer. The young doctor even had to work as a labourer because he could not practice in the absence of See Justice on Pg. 11

challenged while they were trying to cross the Sind River. But the militants fired at the security forces, which resulted in an encounter and in the retaliation of firing all the five militants were killed,” he said. Later, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Awantipora-based Victor Force, R R Nimborker and DIG Central Kashmir Syed Afadatul Mujtaba addressed reporters at RR camp in Wussan village. They termed it a big success and hailed the efforts of police and Army. “We had inputs that a group of five militants called Qari Asadullah group was moving in the area. After acting with full concentration on their movement, a joint operation was launched by Police and Army,” GOC Nimborker said. Calming it as a major success he said that the group were active in the area from 2012 and were under surveillance since last September. “We had learnt that the group planned to attack Amarnath Yatra,” he claimed. “It was group of foreign militants of Hizbul Mujahedeen. Encounter started at around 10 pm last night and first contact was established with the militants at 12.30 a.m. and two of the militant were killed by 1 a.m. Later the operation continued till morning and the rest of the militants were killed. Security forces did not suffer any damage in the operation,” he added. Meanwhile, after the bodies of the slain militants were handed over to locals for burial hundreds of residents gathered in the area and blocked Srinagar-Leh National Highway and shouted slogans. Later all the five militants were laid to rest at a local graveyard. Hizb owns slain militants United Jihad Council chairman and Hizb supreme Syed Salahuddin paid rich tributes to the slain militants. Hizb spokesman Saleem Hashmi in an e-mailed statement to KNS said, “Hizb Commander Qadri Asad-ullah and Mohammad Usman, Umar Javid, Ahmad and Hilal Ahmad have been martyred during the gunfight.” The statement reads that UJC chief made these assertions while addressing a special session of Hizb Command Council. Referring to five Hizb militants who died during an encounter at Ganderbal district on Friday Salahuddin said, “Our men bravely fought with the enemy. Militants will intensify their attacks and will continue till freedom is not achieved,” he warned. “Martyrdom of mujahideen amply demonstrates the fact that every Hizb activists and commanders are committed to Kashmir cause and they are ready to sacrifice their precious lives to achieve this noble cause,” he added. Urging the separatists to honor the blood of martyrs by exhibiting unity and continue their resistance against ‘Indian occupation’ he said, “We hope the day is not far when Indian forces will have to leave the Kashmir.”

Ceasefire...........

befitting reply to the unprovoked firing and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued till midnight. Pallanwala sector had been silent for the past quite some time now. This was a rare ceasefire violation by the Pakistani Army in this sector. There has been almost daily firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani Army in the Poonch-Rajouri sector since August 6 with a total of over 3O ceasefire violations recorded this month. Six jawans have been killed and 10 injured in ceasefire violations and firing by Pakistan troops on forward posts, civilian areas and patrolling parties along the Indo-Pak border in August.

Indian culture manifests divert and pluralistic ethos and cultural background. “India is abode of great religions and all these have impacted the pluralistic heritage of this country”, he said and referred to the vastness in the history of our historical buildings, religious places and other memorabilia telling the story of the uniqueness and richness of Indian culture and Itihaas. Omar Abdullah said that coexistence of Mosques, Temples, Dargahs, Caves and other places of worship make India rich in its culture and heritage. He stressed on the need for un-curtaining and exploring the cultural richness of India and showcasing it for all to study. He said students and young India should know what India is all about and what makes it a great country. He advised the students to deeply and interestingly study India’s cultural diversity and its rich heritage. The Chief Minister while mentioning about the advancement of India in the fields of science and technology and information technology emphasized on making world aware of India’s rich heritage and history. He reiterated on showcasing the great Indian civilization and cultural richness all over the world. Omar Abdullah said unless young Indian generation is well-versed with their culture, heritage, history and ethos, they would not be able to discover the greatness and richness of their own land. He asked the students to study and observe the monuments, places of worship of different faiths and ancient historic buildings present all over the country minutely and study all about these places. “This would help you to know what India is all about and why it is so great a country”, he added. “You are never too old to learn”, he said and advised the students to learn all about the ancient India, its civilization, its people and their work. He said this would develop confidence in them and add to their knowledge well enough to contribute meaningfully for the country. The Chief Minister also referred to the richness of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural ethos and heritage and said that the trait of living in amity and brotherhood and respecting one another’s faith has made this place a miniature India. A presentation on ITIHAAS was made by Smita Vats, Founder-Director of ITIHAAS while the representatives from India, Bhutan, Maldives & Sri Lanka and UNESCO participated in Anveshan-2013.

Prime Minister said exports are picking up with the rest of the world improving its growth. He assured Parliament that the government will do everything possible to contain fiscal deficit at 4.8 per cent. Dr Singh said the Reserve Bank of India will continue to focus on bringing down

Daily inflation. Expressing concern over the sharp decline in exchange rate of rupee, the Prime Minister said that the downward trend was the reaction of the market to certain unexpected external developments. He said the rupee has been specially hit because of large Current Account Deficit (CAD) and some other domestic factors. The government intends to act to reduce the CAD and improve the economy. The Prime Minister regretted that many necessary laws are held up for lack of political consensus and urged political parties to join the government’s efforts to put the economy on path of stable growth. He said, no doubt, the country is faced with challenges but it has the capacity to address them. Dr Singh asserted that the government is not contemplating any capital-control measures in view of turbulence in capital and currency markets. He said the sudden decline in exchange rate is certainly a shock but the government will address it through other measures.

office, Magam. “The cancellation was thereafter given by the office of BMO, Magam instantly to avoid query regarding the said advertisement, which being specific and against the norms. The plan to purchase a particular brand was decided in the office of BMO, Magam along with the local distributor of Wipro GE,” he said. Soon after the issuing of another notice, when three other firm approached BMO office, their bids were rejected on the pretext that the full documentation was not provided. When one of the quoting firms approached BMO office, which was denied the tender documents earlier was surprised to know that the documents were dully available but were not provided, which lead the quoted firm to miss some of the documents to file for the said tender. The supplies said that only three firms were asked to be present on the opening of the commercial Bid. “But when the proceeding started, except Wipro GE, the Board instantly informed all these firms that their technical bids have been rejected and only Wipro GE has qualified for the tender,” one of the suppliers told CNS adding that the Committee opened all the three commercial bids in absence of the representatives of one of the quoting firms and finally the supply order was issued to Wipro GE. “The equipment was already lying with the supplier who supplied the equipment within three days, which otherwise could take more than two weeks time to reach Srinagar for the company,” he said. When contacted, BMO, Magam, G.M.Dar told CNS that a technical error had occurred while issuing the tender notice. “We mentioned the name of Wipro GE, which is highly regrettable. I did not allot the tender in favour of the said company but it was the decision of the Board,” Dar said.

Geelani not allowed to offer Friday prayers: Hurriyat (G) S r i n a g a r, A u g u s t 3 0 : Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani continues to be under house arrest since March 7 and was not allowed to offer Friday prayers today. In a statement to KNS a spokesperson of the Hurriyat (G) Ayaz Akbar said since Geelani’s arrival from Delhi in March, he continues to be virtually in jail and a heavy contingent of police is keeping a continuous and strict vigil over all visitors and guests. While terming restrictions, a worst type of ‘state terrorism’, he alleged that Omar Abdullah regime has surpassed all previous records and virtually the entire state has been turned into a jail. He urged human rights organizations for their cognizance and said that Geelani, since 2010 has been confined to his house. “However administration has so far failed to provide any legal or constitutional justification for his detention. Neither it is clear that under which section of law he has been detained nor is being released from the illegal confinement. Over last three years of detention police has failed to submit a court order and till now Hurriyat

Conference has not received any such written directions in this regard,” he said. “It is a sheer coercion and on gunpoint a responsible citizen is being detained,” he alleged. Referring to statement of Omar Abdullah wherein he had said that there are no restrictions on Geelani and he is free to offer Friday prayers and this was followed by the statement of police chief Ashok Prasad that Geelani can offer prayers in nearby mosque, the spokesperson said that despite these statements, detention not only continues, but even more and severe restrictions were imposed. “Omar Abdullah and Prasad are lying or the entire matter is out of their jurisdiction and it is Home Ministry of India that runs all affairs in the state. In both cases the position of Omar Abdullah becomes suspicious and ridiculous,” he claimed. The Hurriyat (G) spokesperson criticized the attitude of police and added that visitors are being subjected to sever questioning and even journalists are not allowed to meet Geelani, unless they produce permission from IG police.

Kargil Electionswhat it means for National Conference!

I

f Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council election results are any indicator, then alarming bells have started sounding for National Conference exit from the state’s political scene. The unexpected victory for congress even in those areas which have been its domain, speaks volumes of NC’s sagging image. The party has been loosing its grounds in the state due to its continuous failures, indecisions, inconsistent political approach, loose grip over administration, non-implementation of its own much publicized and fancied programmes and non-seriousness at the top level. Though working under compulsions and constraints of coalition politics, the overall performance in the vital sectors has grounded its flight in such a manner that it seems almost impossible for it to take off again in 2014. The bumpy and visionless employment policy, the increasing corruption in the administration, the partisan approach in tackling such problems, the disastrous debacles after debacles in the power sector, the nonavailability of essential commodities, most of the time in far flung areas, the depleting conditions of roads, the noncompletion of developmental projects on time, will definitely be deciding factors in the coming assembly elections stated for 2014. Perhaps this is the time when National Conference and its leadership should rise to the occasion and take the Kargil elections as a lesion so that nearly one and half years left can be utilized in the best way to improve its sagging image and also show that the party can deliver. The Chief Minister should translate his ideas into reality if he really wants that its vote bank should remain intact. National Conference has not only a strong opponent in PDP but also a formidable Congress which can turn the tide against it. The people of the state are not adverse to any of the three parties but they expect them to deliver and who so does it will rule the roast. The present coalition govt’s failures are usually attributed to National Conference, through Congress party, a coalition partner is equally responsible. However, the offensive postures adopted by the two coalition partners have made it clear that in govt. they are partners but the partnership is not a balanced one as Congress blames NC for all the mis-governance and takes credit for the achievements if any. The two are not sailing well and the bitter language used against each other is indicative of their sour relationship. As National Conference is leading the coalition, it is quite but natural that in the blame game it will be a big looser. It will be in the fitness of the things if NC takes the Kargil Council results seriously and puts the damage control mechanism in place, it can save itself from a debacle in the 2014 elections.

RAJOURI THROUGH THE AGES

part from this during the Dogra regime, the revenue was collected from the farmers in the shape of grains and this grain was dumped in this Fort. This Fort has never been used for the defence of Rajouri. Main Hathu also constructed Radha-Krishan Temple at proper Rajouri and number of other Forts in Rajouri and other areas where Dogra forces were stationing. Lateron, he involved himself in a conspiracy against Maharaja Ranjit Singh and was captured and jailed. In 1850 AD, on the orders of residents of Lahore, Sir Fredric Kiry the Poonch Chabal principality was divided into two parts. Raja Jawahar Singh (son of Raja Dhian Singh Prime Minister of Lahore Darbar) became the Raja of Chabal area. But Raja Jawahar Singh was not satisfied with his principality and never came to Chabal. He alongwith Mian Hathu the Governor of Rajouri, started conspiracy against Maharaja Ranbir Singh of Jammu and Kashmir. They attacked Maharaja in 1856 AD near Gummat Gate at Jammu but Maharaja was escaped. Lateron, Jawahar Singh was excommunicated and Mian Hathu was arrested and put behind the bars. In 1860 AD, Bhimber District was constituted which included Tehsil Nowshera and Rajouri. Diwan Thakur Dass became the Wazir-e-Wazarat of the District in 1860 AD, while Lala Bhagwan Dass was posted as Mohat-Mim-eKhewat of Rajouri in 1862 AD. He remained on this post upto 1872 AD after that Rai Ram Chand became the MohatMim-e-Khewat. During this period, number of taxes were imposed on the public. In 1878 AD, there was a severe drought in the District. Due to this drought, hundreds of people died with starvation, thousands of people migrated from the District in search of food. No doubt that Maharaja Ranbir Singh provided relief, relaxed taxes but again there was a drought in 1884 AD and people were compelled to sell their lands at very cheap rate. During this period, the fertile land holdings were transferred by the local people to non-locals so that they could survive. In 1904 AD, on administrative grounds, Rajouri was bifurcated from District Bhimber and annexed with District Reasi. But this setup created lot of problems for the people of Rajouri as they have to

travel miles together on foot to reach Reasi and further more they were facing difficulties in residing at Reasi town. In 1914 AD, a outsider Maulvi Abdul Rehman started exploiting the public in Rajouri against the atrocities of Government. Atthat time, the Lahri Masjid was closed Maulvi Abdul Rehman asked people to offer Namaz in Lahi Masjid. When the administration came into action, Maulvi Abdul Rehman left Rajouri but number of people died in this incident apart from arrests of Malik Aziz Din of Darhal, Sayed Walayat Shah of Khablan, Rasal Khan Thakur etc. No doubt that the disturbance was subsided, but political awakening was started among the public in Rajouri area with the speeches of Maulvi Abdul Rehman. In 1931 AD, when the political movement against Dogra Ruler started in Kashmir, the people of Rajouri were also influenced by this movement. On 21st January, 1933, a call was given by the majority people to assemble at Lahri Ground Rajouri for the public rally. Thise rally was banned by the Government as the administration had the bad taste of such rallies which were organised at Lahi Madan in 1914 AD. After knowing about the happenings of Rajouri, Sardar Tirath Singh, the Wazir-e-Wazarat of Reasi, reached Rajouri to monitor the situation. He called the prominent persons like Mirza Habib Ullah, Mirza Feroz Din, Ch. Dewan Ali and others and asked them for disbanding the rally. But the majority of public insisted for offering Namaz in Jamia Masjid at Lahi Madan. The public started pouring in the ground. Sardar Tirath Singh the Wazir-e-Wazarat who was present at sight had given orders for firing on the rally. About 25 person were killed and number of persons were injured. Ultimately, the administration took control over the situation. After this incident, Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah visited Rajouri in 1933 AD and pacified the situation. At that time, Sheikh Sahib was the President of Muslim Conference. First political rally was organised at Rajouri under his presidentship. Sheikh Sahib nominated Abdul Aziz Shawl as Secretary and Mir Ghulam Rasool as President of Muslim Conference Unit of Rajouri. In 1935 AD, the First Gujjar Jatt Conference was organised at Rajouri by Chowdhary Diwan Ali.

In 1937 AD, Chowdhary Diwan Ali started food grain bank in Rajouri to get rid off from the jaws of traders and businessmen who were exploiting the innocent people. In 1939 AD, when Muslim Conference was divided and converted into National Conference, Shawl Sahib remained as Secretary, Mir Ghulam Rasool as President but Mirza Faqir Ullah had disassociated himself from the National Conference. In 1940 AD. Ch. Ghulam Abbas visited Rajouri and established Muslim Conference Unit, Mirza Faqir Mohammad became ihe President of Muslim Conference of Rajouri unit. In 1942 AD, Ch.Diwan Ali organised a Kisan rally at Throti (present Jawahar Nagar) This rally was against the Land Lord and businessmen community which was organised to awaken the public against exploitation. In 1943 AD, Sheikh Sahib again visited Rajouri and reconstituted NC Branch. In 1944-45 AD, Mirza Mohammad Hussain of Behrote started exploiting people against Maharaja regime. When Maharaja came to know about the activities of Mirza Mohammad Hussain, Maharaja passed orders for his arrest, but Mirza Sahib escaped from Rajouri area and lateron he met Maharaja and showed his full respect and loyalty to him. Maharaja then excused him and Mirza Mohammad Hussain came back to Rajouri. In 1946 AD, when the Elections of State Assembly were conducted, Mirza Mohammad Hussain and Chowdhari Diwan Ali took part in the election. Ch. Diwan Ali was the candidate of Gujjar and Jat confrence while Mirza Mohammad Hussain was the representing Muslim Conference. Mirza Sahib won the elections with a small margin. In 1946 AD, when Sher-e-Kashmir started quite Kashmir movement, there was a great impact of this movement in Rajouri also. Abdul Aziz Shawl and other NC workers were arrested in this movement. This was the back ground when the country was divided by the Britishers into two Nations in 1947 i.e. India and Pakistan. On 14th August, 1947, Pakistan came into existence while on 15th August, 1947 India became the sovereign State. 365 princely states acceded with India but the Maharaja of J&K decided not to exceed with India and Pakistan and keep the status quo maintained. On the

other hand, with the emergence of Pakistan, the leaders of that country started efforts to take Kashmir with them. Firstly they motivated Maharaja through his Prime Minister Ram Chand Kak. But when Maharaja decided not to exceed with Pakistan then Pakistan tried to win over the main political party NC and Sheikh Sahib on the name of Islam. But Sheikh Sahib did not come under their influence. Therefore Pakistan started thinking of capturing Kashmir through force. Janah was knowing that Maharaja was having 10000 strong forces which were scattered in all over the State and even from this very force more than 30% soldiers had migrated to Pakistan. On the other hand, there was 66000 exservicemen of 2nd World War in Poonch principality who came under the influence of Sardar Ibrahim Khan a native of village Tarluti in Poonch area (who lateron became the First President of so call Azad Kashmir Government) and started revolt against the Dogra rule. Ibrahim Khan had also motivated Abdul Qayoom Khan, the Chief Minister of MWFP who provided him 30000 tribemen for Jehad in Kashmir. Then Sardar Ibrahim Khan discussed his plan with Pakistan Government who not only provided arms, ammunition to his forces, but also despatched army personnels to supervise and monitor the operation against Kashmir Government. By this way, in the month of October, 1947, Ibrahim Khan alongwith Khurshid Anwar a leader of Afreedi Tribemen started armed revolt against Maharaja. This revolt was started from Ravlakote in Poonch area and upto the end of October, most of the area of Poonch principality was captured by the Suddans and tribal groups. On the other hand, Mr. Khurshid Anwar alongwith his tribemen reached near Srinagar and on 26th of October, 1947, the so called Azad Kashmir Government was established at Palandri in a primary school by Sardar Ibrahim Khan on the same day. Lateron, this administrative set up was shifted from Palandri to village Tararkhal of Poonch principality. Immediate after establishing the so called Government, Ibrahim Khan started planning for capturing Rajouri. The detail of capture of Rajouri by Pakistan army and its liberation is given in next chapter. (Concluded)

Tobacco-The Deadliest Killer

T

obacco products are made entirely or partly of leaf tobacco as raw material, which are intended to be smoked, sucked, chewed or snuffed. All contains the highly addictive psychoactive ingredient, nicotine. Tobacco was introduced into India by Portuguese traders during AD 1600. Its use and production proliferated to such a great extent that today India is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world. Soon after its introduction, it became a valuable commodity of barter trade in India. Trade expanded and tobacco spread rapidly along the Portuguese trade routes in the East, via Africa to India, Malaysia, Japan and China. During this period, the habit of smoking spread across several South Asian countries. Virtually every household in the Portuguese colonies took up the newly introduced habits of smoking and chewing tobacco. India is one of the biggest tobacco markets in the world, ranking third in total tobacco consumption. However, the per capita consumption in the country is 0.9 kg compared to the world average of 1.8 kg. Tobacco usages in India is contrary to world trends since chewing tobacco and beedi are the dominant forms of tobacco consumption, whereas internationally, cigarette is the dominant form of tobacco use. In the late nineteenth century, the beedi industry began to grow in India. The price differential from cigarettes favoured the use of beedis and this domestic product soon supplanted cigarettes as the major form of tobacco consumption. While tobacco chewing was practiced for many centuries, commercial production and marketing have been scaled recently, with the introduction of the gutka. The rate of growth of consumption of gutka has

overtaken that of smoking forms of tobacco. As a result, oral tobacco consumption has opened a new and broader front in the battle between commercial tobacco and public health in India. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey India report notes that Khaini is the most commonly used smokeless tobacco product. Gutkha is the second most common form. The consumption of smokeless tobacco in India is also prevalent in various other forms e.g. paan with tobacco, paan masala with tobacco, Gul, Mawa, Mishri, Bajjar, Gudakhu etc, which are used as dentifrice i.e. for application on teeth or gums. Evidence shows that smokeless tobacco contains more than 3000 chemical compounds of which 29 are proven carcinogens i.e. cancer causing substances. One of the main risk factors for tobacco use is number of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. It is the single most cause of disease, disability and death. Each year people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoking. Despite these risks people smoke cigarettes. The harmful effects of smoking do not end with the smoker. Adults and children aged 3–11 years are exposed to secondhand smoke. Even brief exposure can be dangerous because nonsmokers inhale many of the same poisons as smokers. Secondhand smoke exposure causes diseases including heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more frequent and severe asthma attacks in children. Each year primarily because of exposure to secondhand smoke nonsmoking people die of lung cancer, heart disease, and children younger than 18 months have lower respiratory tract infections. As per the

recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) India Report, 2010, the use of smokeless tobacco among adult males in India is as high as 32.9% and for females it is 18.4%. Overall, 26% of the adult population consumes smokeless tobacco. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS)-India, 2009 similarly revealed that 12.5% (Boys = 16.2%, Girls = 7.2%) youth use tobacco products other than cigarettes. According to ICMR, 50% of cancers among men and 25% among women in India are related to tobacco use. Nearly 90% of oral cancers are related to use of chewing tobacco. States with high prevalence of smokeless tobacco also face the challenge of high burden of oral cancer. Besides oral cancer, smokeless tobacco use is also associated with cancers of food pipe, pancreas, kidney, throat and stomach. There is also increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases among smokeless tobacco users. Recently an initiative has been taken and serious concern raised over growing Gutka/Pan Masala menace in India. India has the highest number of oral cancer in the world with 75,000 to 80,000 new cases of oral cancers being reported every year and chewing tobacco and gutka contribute to 90 percent of oral cancer cases in the country. Cancer of oral cavity is frequent and common finding among the cancer patients show addiction to gutka and other tobacco products. It is observed that magnitude of tobacco related cancer in average is on an upward trend in Eastern and North Eastern India. This is largely due to high prevalence of tobacco consumption. According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS 2010) nearly one third of Indian population is addicted to smokeless tobacco. A large number of

children and youth in India are addicted to smokeless tobacco. These preparations essentially have tobacco with or without supari and are well proven to be harmful for health. Smokeless tobacco contains nicotine and direct consumption of which is highly addictive. Scientific evidence has established that tobacco chewing causes cancer of mouth, ocesophagus (food pipe), larynx and pharynx (throat), pancreas, stomach, kidney and lung. It can also cause high blood pressure and other life threatening cardiovascular conditions like myocardial ischemia, stroke etc. Consumption of tobacco may be reduced by raising the price of tobacco. It has proven to be one of the most effective strategies for preventing and controlling tobacco use. Specifically the increasing cigarette prices would decrease the prevalence of tobacco use, particularly among youth and young adults, and that increases in cigarette excise taxes would lead to substantial long-term improvements in the nation’s health. A 10% increase in the price of cigarettes is estimated to reduce consumption by nearly 4% among adults, and the potential reduction among young people and low-income populations is even higher. Evidencebased, statewide tobacco control programs that are comprehensive, sustained, and accountable have shown to reduce smoking rates, tobacco-related deaths, and diseases caused by smoking. A comprehensive program is a coordinated effort to establish tobacco free policies, reduce the social acceptability of tobacco use, promote cessation, help tobacco users quit, and prevent initiation of tobacco use. This approach combines educational, clinical, regulatory, economic, and social strategies.

Cardio kickboxing

Remember the '80s, when every woman on the planet was hooked on to aerobics, as the universal form of working out? Then came the '90s and aerobic kickboxing (now known as cardio kickboxing) hit the fitness circuit. A sports-inspired form of aerobics, it pairs the cardio workout of traditional aerobics with the strength and agility training involved in martial arts. Using conventional heavy bags and training pads that are based on authentic kickboxing techniques, it provides both resistance and cardiovascular benefits. Most cardio kickboxing classes begin with light stretches and a cardio warm up. Typical routines include a series of repetitive punches, hand strikes and kick. And we can't think of a better way to incorporate self-defence moves in your workout.

Olympic lifting (Explosive lifts)

There's a warning that comes with this one. Not everyone's cup of tea, this is a highly advanced and complex movement exercise. Olympic lifts or explosive lifts should not be confused with powerlifting. The former recruits maximum use of muscle fiber in the entire body. The explosive movement helps co-ordinate the entire body to perform together. Says Ranjane, "They are excellent for joint stability and neuromuscular balance. It helps gain over all muscle mass." While you can get amazing benefits from doing explosive lifts, if done wrong, you have high chances of injury. Shetty warns, "Olympic lifts can improve your athletic ability greatly. Unfortunately, the drawback is that it comes with a tough learning curve. Also, they are notoriously hard to learn and master." But if you do execute them correctly, then you can reap their vast benefits.

Indoor wall climbing

Not every fitness routine is capable of giving you an adrenaline rush. So if thrill and excitement is what you're looking for in your workout, then indoor wall climbing is a great option for women. Says Ranjane, "Indoor wall climbing helps you practice balance, increases hand grip strength and challenges the mind and body co-ordination. It also improves kinesthetic awareness. It demands supreme energy and co-ordinates the entire body." Apart from giving you a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top, it also improves fitness while building trust and problem solving skills. If there ever was a challenging complete body workout that required co-ordination, endurance, strength, flexibility and balance, our vote would go to indoor wall climbing.

Walking lunges

"Walking lunges are an excellent workout for mobility of hip, knee and ankle joint," says Ranjane. An extremely beneficial exercise, it has been adopted by many athletes who are engaged in running sports like sprinting, hurdles, football, hockey etc. And why not, after all, it stresses joint mobility, strength, flexibility, core, and challenges the cardiovascular system. Mobility of the ankle, hip, and knee joints are required, to maintain perfect alignment, as well as maintain stability. All you have to do is walk around the room, but in a lunging action. To intensify this workout, you can use dumbbells and barbells.

The Asylum workout

Are you looking for a workout that will increase your stamina and strength? Then Body Attack is meant for you. It is a sportsinspired cardio workout that helps in building strength and stamina. This high-energy training exercise combines athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilisation exercises. Basically, it's high impact aerobics that is set to music! It will provide you a platform for achieving the highest personal levels of aerobic and anaerobic fitness. While at first it may seem hard to attempt, it's a safe workout for women of all ages and fitness levels.

Aqualates

If you're a water baby, you'll definitely enjoy Aqualates. This sports-specific aqua workout is aerobics in water that's based on the same anatomical guidelines and principles of Pilates, but in the resistive environment of a swimming pool. Designed specifically to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, aqualates is an ideal workout for those who suffer from pelvic, back, or other joint pain because the effects of gravity are reduced significantly in the water, thus making it a low-impact exercise. Apart from being a calorie-burning workout, Aqualates also enhances co-ordination, mobility, stability, endurance and balance.

Plyometric box jumps

"Plyometric training develops strength, power, balance, agility and kinesthetic awareness, all at the same time. It truly addresses many levels of athletic performance," says Jivesh Shetty, fitness expert. Try the plyometric box j u m p , a n e x e r cise, where you have to jump from the ground to an elevated surface (one to two feet off the floor). They are compound, multi-jump exercises, (training for explosive power movement), that are also practiced in sports like long jumps, pole vault and basketball. TIP: In order to perfect a box jump, you must develop agility, coordination, accuracy and balance. And you should perform them at challenging heights.

5 Fruits for a glowing skin We also know that a cup of fruit juice a day is sure to guarantee a clear complexion. How about a massage with a fruit pulp or a fruit facial? Fruit facials have been there for at least a decade now. But with people getting more wary of effect of chemicals on the skin, a majority of them are now resorting to using something from their own kitchen. What better way to pamper your skin than with pure stuff which is free of toxins and not harmful to your skin? Besides the fact that they hydrate and rejuvenate your skin, the very smell of a fruit on your face is quite de-stressing. Unlike the chemical beauty treatments, fruits are costeffective, natural and also bring a visible difference. Here are a few fruits and their properties, choose what suits you best! Banana: This is one fruit that's abundantly available in India all through the year. We know it's a good source of iron, magnesium and potassium and helps reduce menstrual cramps. The effect of banana on skin too is not something that can be ignored. Bananas are rich in vitamin A, B and E and hence works as an anti-aging agent. A fresh mashed banana facial can do wonders for your skin. Lemon: Lemon juice is an important ingredient in most Indian recipes. This is also a fruit of all seasons and almost always finds place on your kitchen shelf or refrigerator. With its vitamin C content, its juice will keep your skin beautiful. A glass of warm water with a tsp of honey and a dash of lemon juice on an empty stomach

every morning is a great skin cleanser. With its astringent properties, it can be used to lighten the skin tone and also diminish acne scars. Rub the inside of a lemon peel on your elbow remove dark spots. Mix lemon and honey and use it as a natural bleach on your skin.Apple: An apple a day keeps the doctor away is cliched, but its health benefits are undisputable. Apple's antioxidant property prevents cell and tissue damage. Studies by nutritionists have shown that apples contain abundant amounts of elastin and collagen that help keep the skin young. Applying a mixture of mashed apple, honey, rose water and oatmeal can act as a great exfoliating mask on your skin. Orange: Rich in vitamin C that improves skin texture. Like apple, orange too contains collagen that slows skin aging process. Rub the insides

of orange on your skin to tighten the skin. Oranges can be dried and powdered and used as a natural scrub. Like lemon, oranges too help clear skin blemishes. Papaya: The benefits of this fruit on skin have perhaps been talked about since the time of our ancestors. Papaya is rich in antioxidants and contain a special enzyme called papain that can kill dead cells and cure skin impurities. A glass of papaya milk or just applying the flesh of papaya on your skin can do wonders to your skin. Mango: Rightly called the king of fruits for not just its taste but also for health benefits. The soft pulpy fruit has an amazing effect on skin too. Rich in vitamin-A and rich antioxidants, it fights against skin aging, regenerates skin cells and restores the elasticity of skin.

How to improve balance in older people Falling down and losing balance is one of the most common problems with old age. As age progresses, parents will complain of loss of balance and dizziness. Falls can lead to complications that in turn can lead to disability. Hence with the help of our fitness experts we build a good foundation based on exercise that build and strengthen your muscles. Here are some interesting exercises that will help you re-gain your footing. Strength and conditioning coach, Arnav Sarkar gives you a practical guide to boost your muscle groups. He explains, "With loss of activity the body starts losing strength, endurance and flexibility, and thus basic movements like walking become a challenge for some. The best way to combat this is to keep exercising and focus on working all the major muscle groups." He lists basic exercises to follow, "A basic exercise

that should be a staple would include squats, do half range or sit on a chair if normal full range is not possible. Besides do some lying hip extensions, light to moderate weight training, and of course do some stretching, cardiovascular activity like walking, climbing stairs to keep your body strong and not let things like balance become an issue for you." Jordyn Steig, our fitness guru, expert columnist and founder of Wellistic Wholeness, breaks down the facts further he says, "Fit people in general fall less often than those whose muscles are weak and joints are less mobile. Almost any exercise will enhance older people's agility and keep their muscles and bones stronger than they would be if they remain sedentary." Jordyn says, "The best way to remain light on ones feet and learn how to naturally react to being thrown off of our centers, which causes falling, is to engage

in exercise which destabilises the body. Destabilising the body simply means ensuring that whatever exercise one is doing, the body needs to stabilise itself rather than letting the floor or a fixed object like a bench or a stool hold our bodies still."He lets you in on his personal preference, "I tend to use an exercise ball to lie or sit on or a wobble board to stand on or hold straps (like the TRX Suspension Training System) to allow clients to pick one foot off the ground or stand on their tip-toes for every possible exercise during a workout. The basic effect is to require our core muscles to stabilise our body. When these methods are practiced regularly, I see a very quick change in a person's coordination and agility, as well as an increase in mobility in their joints. This decreases the chances of falling when one is slightly knocked off their centre and also makes a person, supple, fit, and strong."

Male circumcision cuts STD risk Leading paediatricians in the United States have said that the health benefits of circumcising baby boys outweigh the risks associated with the procedure. This may reignite debate on the controversial subject, which has pitted faith groups against opponents of religion who have described the operation as little more than genital mutilation. The American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) which had previously opposed the routine circumcision of newborns, said parents should decide and urged insurance companies to pay for it. "The benefits of newborn male circumcision justify access to this procedure for those families who choose it," the Independent quoted the academy a saying. The recommendation follows after research showed that circumcision reduces the chances of contracting sexually transmitted infections including HIV. And it is also claimed that the procedure

can lower the chance of urinary tract infections and penis cancer. It is estimated around 30,000 boys are circumcised each year in the UK. The procedure involves removing the tip of the penis reducing germs which growth underneath the foreskin. The AAP concluded that bleeding and infection as a result of the surgery were rare. But opponents argue that the foreskin is highly sensitive and plays a vital part in lubrication during sex.

Your face reveals all about your health Need a quick health check? Turn to the mirror to know what your face reveals about your health Your face is much more than the visage of your personality to the world. It's your best asset, your fortune, your primary outlet of nonverbal expression and with facial recognition softwares, it's your password as well. Or in Oscar Wilde's words; a man's face is his autobiography and a woman's, her work of fiction. But research has shown that your face is also a good barometer of your health and what's wrong with it. While facial diagnosis is not an absolute science, the condition of your skin speaks a lot about what's going on inside, both physically and emotionally. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners have for centuries used facial analysis as a diagnostic tool by matching facial areas and features with organs and emotional states. So the stubborn pimple that chooses to erupt on the same spot of your cheek is perhaps pointing at a graver health issue that needs attention. Here is how you can read your face to adopt a healthier lifestyle:

Forehead

Your vast forehead speaks for several organs such as the heart, the bladder and the small intestine network. So be prepared to flaunt all the wear and tear of excessive partying or your sleepless nights. A reddened, flaky complexion of your forehead could point to a digestive tract that's cry-

ing for some lubrication while congestion hints at poor detoxification. But if you have got both, your digestive apparatus is screaming out to you. First off, go easy on the partying and make sleep a priority. Avoid oily foods and processed foods till you get the shine back.

Eyebrows

The window to your liver lies between the eyebrows. Expect too much alcohol and bingeing on other toxins to make their appearance here. Ancient Chinese medicine considers the liver to be directly linked with anger. So if you find yourself breaking into a tight scowl too often, you may want to cool off your anger issues. A stronger right brow says that you are more likely to express anger outwardly. However, a stronger left brow means that your tendency is to suppress your anger.

Mouth

This one's a no-brainer. Your mouth obviously correlates to your stomach. While the lips are linked to the stomach and intestine, the surrounding area at the sides that pass on to

the jowls are connected to the colon. Spots or discolouration dotted around your lips could hence indicate poor bowel movements, bloating or even a poor appetite. This may also be a reminder to check for any food allergies that you may have never learnt of. Gums, if bloody, point to an acidic tummy, while dry, chapped lips mean dehydration. Cracks or sores in particular, call out for a spleen that's not cared for. Vitamin B and iron supplements may make matters better.

Cheeks

The mildest of rashes on your cheeks could indicate that your body is starved of oxygen as your cheeks are wired to your respiratory system. The solution is to make your breathing fuller and deeper by working out or doing yoga. If you smoke regularly, watch out for broken capillaries, discolouration, fine lines or congestion in this spot. Likewise for those down with cold or flu. If your redness aggravates easily, you may be overdoing your dose of stimulants such as coffee, colas and alcohol.

Chin

Your chin mirrors the kidneys and the bladder. Keep an eye out for any hormonal imbalance as it will show up here. Congestion around the chin point to your kidneys working overtime, most likely due to you putting yourself through extreme amounts of stress. Chin indicates adrenal fatigue. Heavy stress causes your adrenals that sit above the kidneys to release cortisol.

NIA gets 12-day custody of Yasin Bhatkal, Asadullah Akhtar

New Delhi: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has got the custody of Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his key aide Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi for 12 days. Yasin Bhatkal was produced in the Patiala House Court in Delhi on Friday with the NIA requesting his custody for 14 days. But the court granted his custody for 12 days. “We wanted 14 days custody for both Bhatkal and Haddi. Instead the court granted custody for 12 days. The demand for custody was on the grounds of a larger conspiracy against the nation,” said NIA lawyer Ahmed Khan. However, defence lawyer MS Khan claimed that the arrested man was not Bhatkal. “The NIA has no grounds for seeking custody. Also, the man arrested is not Bhatkal. The man that has been caught, his name is Mohammad Ahmed,” he claimed. Sources say that Bhatkal, who was arrested on Thursday from the Indo-Nepal border, has accepted his

role in the Varanasi and Hyderabad blast during the preliminary enquiry. ALSO SEE Big blow to Indian Mujahideen; Yasin Bhatkal, Asadullah Akhtar arrested One laptop and mobile phone have also been recovered from him. One of the accused in Mumbai gangrape case was a minor: Mumbai Police

The Mumbai Police on Friday sent one of the arrested accused in the Shakti Mill compound gangrape case to remand home in Dongri, accepting documents collected during investigation seemed to indicate he was a minor. All five arrested accused on Thursday had undergone bone ossification test to determine their exact age. “As per the documents collected during investigation he is a minor and being treated such. If further medical examination results reveal otherwise, he would be treated as an adult,” said a senior officer from Mumbai Crime Branch. The remand copy presented in a local court here said that the mother of an accused had claimed that the accused is a minor and presented certain documents during the investigation. “The documents presented by her will be certified and will be presented before the juvenile justice board, where final decision on his age will be taken,” said the remand copy. “His family had been claiming from start

Centre, CBI at loggerhead over sanction to try officers

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) CBI and the Centre were at loggerheads in the Supreme Court in the Coalgate case with the agency asserting no prior sanction is required to prosecute bureaucrats in the scam and government vehemently opposing it. Senior advocate Amrendra Sharan, appearing for the agency, reiterated the stand that there is no requirement of sanction for prosecution in cases where the court has either directed or is monitoring the investigation of the case.

he was a minor. Since now he has been sent to remand home, he should be treated under respective law,” said Advocate Flavia Agnes, Co-founder, Majlis, a resource centre on women’s issues. According to Ms. Agnes, juveniles committing such a crime are a part of bigger social problem. “This accused was supposed to be in a school, but he is a dropout. We need to focus on these issues to tackle the problem,” she said.Meanwhile, the police custody of three other accused in the case Siraj Khan, Vijay Jadhav and Quasim Bangali was extended up to September 5. Quasim’s lawyer too made an application claiming he was a minor. The court rejected his plea on grounds that he was treated as major in a 2012 case, when he was tried in Girgaum court. Court observed that Quasim’s physical appearance does not suggest that he was a minor. The police have also added two more IPC sections in case – section 377 (offence relating unnatural sex) and section 120 b (criminal conspiracy).

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh admitted that the “country is faced with difficult economic situation”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the central government of “selling off” the country for individual interests. “To suit the interest of one or two countries, the country’s economy is intentionally being weakened. JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Friday wondered in Lok Sabha as to why Asaram Bapu was still roaming free and has not been arrested despite rape charges slapped against him. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Yadav said when law is equal for all, why the self-styled godman has not been arrested and was visiting various places. He wondered as to why no action has been taken against him despite Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot having an hour-long meeting with Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on the issue. Yadav alleged that Asaram was a “land mafia” who has usurped thousands of acres of land across the country. BJP meets Pranab, seeks early elections

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday called for early parliamentary elections to end what it said was the present atmosphere of “uncertainty” in the country. BJP leader LK Advani said the request was made to President Pranab Mukherjee. “The way to end the present scenario of uncertainty in the country is that the Lok Sabha election, scheduled to be held in 2014, should be held in 2013 itself along with assembly elections,” Advani told the media. Advani submitted a memorandum to the president on behalf of BJP MPs “on the unprecedented crisis facing the Indian economy”. “The free fall of the Indian rupee against the US dollar is only a symptom of the deeper malaise afflicting the Indian economy today,” said the memorandum. Advani said the government was blaming everyone for the current crisis — except itself. “We have not seen this kind of a government where the present finance minister blames the earlier one (for the economic problems), who is not in a position to answer now,” he said.

He demanded that entire Parliament has to take “cognisance” of such a move from the supporters of a controversial figure. Speaking on the Mumbai gangrape of a journalist, Yadav had sought action against Asaram against whom a teenaged girl has slapped rape charges.

The memorandum added that the country can ill-afford a government which is “paralysed”. “We have come to urge you, therefore, to end the prevailing uncertainty by advising this government to seek a fresh mandate at the earliest and not later than the state elections due in the next three months,” it said. Assembly elections are due in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan before the end of November. The memorandum said an atmosphere of gloom and doom prevails in the country. “We shudder to think of the unbearable consequences all these (economic) developments are going to have on the common man.”

We must protect our women: Modi

Saying that protection of "mothers and sisters" was a big issue before the Indian society, Gujarat chief minister on Friday said in Chota Udepur that if women were feeling insecure, the Indian men had no right to call themselves "mard" (manly)."In the country of Sita and Savitris....protection of mothers and daughters is a big question for the Indian society," Modi said at a rally in the newly-created Chota Udepur district."I don't want to make a political comment. But I want to ask men why our sisters are unable to lead a peaceful life despite our presence.... (How is it) that our sisters can't stay alone at home..." Modi said, speaking at the function where he was felicitated for creation of the new district. "If this is so, we have no right to call ourselves men. We have no right to call ourselves `mard'. We must die of shame," Modi said. The BJP campaign committee chairman however did not refer to the recent incidents such as the Mumbai gangrape and allegations of sexual assault against controversial godman Asaram Bapu. But he derided those who blame women for such incidents. "Some men with pervert brains blame women for such acts. It is no fault of the woman.... The fault lies in the pervert minds of men. And, society has to fight against such pervert mindset," Modi said. "Exploitation of women and daughters is a blot on the society, which it must fight. Society must get rid of this blot. We must assume a collective responsibility to get rid of this blot,” Modi said.

Police failed to nab real culprits in Dabholkar murder case: Sanatan Sanstha Hindu right-wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha, whose name has cropped up in connection with the assassination of renowned rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, said in Mumbai on Friday that police investigation into the case is not heading in the “right” direction. Hitting out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders for allegedly hiding the accused, Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson Abhay Vartak said Maharashtra police have failed to nab the real culprits. “The way NCP leaders like Vidya Chavan and Jitendra Awhad talk, it seems as if they are hiding the accused,” he told a press conference. Vartak alleged around 50 Sanatan Sanstha activists were interrogated by the police. It seemed as if they came to arrest him,” he said, alleging atrocities against the Sanstha. “We are sincere citizens of the country and would like to co-operate in the probe but we should not be made to face humiliation,” Vartak said, adding, the police sought even passwords of ‘sadhaks’ (activists).Another Sanstha leader Sanjeev Unhalekar demanded that the

Dabholkar murder case be handed over to CBI or the Mumbai police should be given complete freedom to investigate. He said the organisation would file defamation charges and serve notices to a Marathi TV news channel, Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti’s founder Shyam Manav and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad for allegedly defaming the Sanstha’s name.

Strong grounds for Asaram Bapu’s arrest, Jodhpur Police say

NEW DELHI: There are strong grounds for arrest of Asaram Bapu and he will be arrested if he cannot provide proper defence, Jodhpur Police said on Friday. Briefing reporters on the case, Jodhpur Police said a team will leave for Bhopal on Friday night to continue with the probe and question Asaram Bapu in the sexual assault case. Police said Asaram had requested for extra time, which has been refused. We received a fax from Asaram’s ashram on Friday stating that he is unable to come to Jodhpur from Bho-

pal due to the death of a relative and his ill-health, the police said. Since the deadline for him to surrender ends today, we are sending a team to Bhopal to find out the status of his health, the police said. If he fails to answer our questions, he will be arrested, the police said. Earlier, Asaram’s son Narayan Sai claimed that his father had booked tickets for a flight to New Delhi on Friday morning but his health suddenly deteriorated because of

which the trip was cancelled. In Ahmedabad, an application was moved on behalf of Asaram before the Gujarat high court for transit anticipatory bail. Asaram’s counsel Sudhir Nanavati withdrew the bail plea after Justice A J Desai indicated that he was inclined to reject it.
