According to CNS, for the pedestrians, it was a double nightmare as at several places the pits were open and various people while wading through filthy waters slipped down. People alleged that such situation has arisen because of the inaction of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. “The action of SMC is limited to face book only where the Corporation posts some of the photographs about its achievements but on ground it remains invisible. No dewatering pumps were used to drain the waters from the roads and streets,” one of the pedestrian Abdul Lateef told CNS. People alleged that snow clearance operation is also running at a snail’s pace. “Snow is accumulated everywhere and even on some of the main roads snow has not been cleared,” another pedestrian said. In old city, water logging and inundation became the source of inconvenience for large number of people on Wednesday. At number of places including Khanyar, people used push-carts to cross the inundated roads.

EDITORIAL/ OPINION Official apathy, apathy & apathy
O
nce again a snowfall and once again the whole administration crumbles like dry leaves. No electricity, no water supply, no road connectivity and all essential commodities suddenly disappear from the valley. The whole Srinagar city and other towns are submerged and those hollow promises which the administration announces before the onset of summer are once again exposed. One fails to understand as to what happens to the so called arrangements made in advance and publicized for months together on official electronic media and the local press. It is strange that the snowfall has put the state administration out of gear and the normal life has been disrupted which obviously will take several days to come back on the track. Even today the second day of snowfall the roads in the city and leading to towns and villages have not been cleared of snow and the electricity remains disrupted in most of the places so remains the power supply. Even the essential services like Radio and Doordarshan and hospitals are without electric supply and everybody has to suffer. The tall claims of administration as regards the clearance of roads was totally exposed as the cityites had to foot different distances and were seen braving the submerged roads. What a pity? It seems as if there was nobody alive and the whole city turned like a ghost city at 7pm on the first day of the snow itself and the people were seen helplessly braving the situation on their own. The state administration claimed to have set up control rooms at different places to help people but when the people tried to contact these control rooms nobody picked up the phones. The snowfall claimed 12 lives injured scores and destroyed hundreds of houses fruit trees and other structures. The natural calamity also caused enormous damages to the fruit plants and also to the crops. It is a matter of concern that whenever there is a snowfall or intermittent rains the electricity supply becomes the first causality which is followed by other problems. The people are facing shortage of many things besides the cruelty of black marketers and hoarders who taking the advantage of the situation by charging exorbitant prices from the hapless customers.

India not in Kashmir NC–Congress unholy alliance on sectarian lines T By: Shafiq Mir
I
he heading of this article may sound you strange but after reading the full text I am sure you will definitely appreciate my angle of thinking . I don’t claim that India has lost Kashmir physically, but for sure, India has left space open for those propagating separatism as per the style and fashion suitable to them . Let us see how India is out from Kashmir? India’s oldest political party and longest ruling party ‘ Congress’ has forged an alliance with a local regional political party National Conference for the ongoing Lok Sabha general elections . As per agreement reached out between two parties, Congress and NC have shared all the six parliamentary seats on fifty percent basis . Though the alliance between two or multi parties of same ideology is no wrong, but here in Kashmir the pre poll alliance took place between those two parties having complete opposite ideology particularly in terms of “Kashmir”. This alliance has not only demolished the dream house constructed by Congress workers in Kashmir valley at the cost of their lives, it has also paved a way for more separatism in Kashmir valley , say observers .The alliance between Congress and National Conference is not seen as an unholy move, but it has national implications as well . See how the state has been divided on sectarian and religious lines . All the three seats belonging to Kashmir valley have been
given to National Conference while Congress opted to have other three seats belonging to Jammu and Ladakh regions. This seat sharing has been done completely on sectarian and religious lines . There are three prominent regions of Jammu and Kashmir identified as Kashmir valley, Jammu region and Ladakh region . Kashmir valley is dominantly inhabited by Muslims with more than 99% population, while Jammu region has 60% Hindu population . And both these regions have always displayed a different political view particularly after the emergence of rebellion in Kashmir valley . Similarly, Ladakh region comprising two districts Leh and Kargil is inhabited by Budhists and Shia Muslims . Though administratively, Ladakh is still part of Kashmir region , however, it’s approach has always been quite different from Kashmir valley particularly in terms of politics . Similarly, politically, the approach of Jammu region has also been different from Kashmir valley. For instance, separatism and anti India sentiment was always dominant in Kashmir valley even it can be noticed in the so-called mainstream political parties like National Conference and new born PDP . While the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions have always been displaying their nationalistic and pro-India face . Leaving aside Jammu and Ladakh where it has its strong base, the Congress party has always kept its presence in Kashmir valley
too since 1947. And it can be safely said that it was only the Congress party and its leadership of that times likes Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru who had managed Kashmir for India despite availability of other options to the Kashmiries at that point of time . Since 1947, Indian National Congress has always been there in Kashmir valley and what ever the step India took so far in Kashmir whether right or wrong, it was politically always supported by Congress . In other words we can say that Congress has always been India’s political strength in Kashmir valley . Strategically too, Indian establishment always encouraged the Kashmir valley based Congress men and they were given important positions to keep the Indian interest live in Kashmir valley . Endorsing this point, a senior Congress leader from Kashmir valley told this journalist that “ Congress in Kashmir means India in Kashmir”. He said ideologically, this has been only political force in Kashmir valley which propagated the Indian national agenda even in the hostile situations . “ Despite all odds, Congress was given ear and space by the Kashmiries and that is why we were always present in each Kashmir government”, said Congress leader . He said they were not against alliance, but pre-poll alliance with any such party which has completely opposite ideology means a complete surrender of our ideology before that party . He says there is a lot of difference be-
tween pre poll and post poll alliance . “Pre poll alliance is a surrender of an ideology and post poll alliance is a compulsion of the given situation”, he added . Describing the alliance between Congress and National Conference a dangerous move for the future of state, an other Congress leader says that with this alliance, the state has got divided on sectarian lines . “ Muslim dominated Kashmir valley has been completely given to National Conference while Hindu majority and Budhist areas have been given to Congress . It means we have left space open for National Conference and other local parties to propagate separatism of their choice like autonomy and self rule and there is no party to propagate the nationalism as the Congress has been kept out from valley”, he says. Not only this, for the sake of alliance, how a Congress man can endorse the stand of alliance partner from the dais where they will speak for autonomy and will declare Kashmir as disputed which is against our party policy and against Indian National policy . In short, he says “ by keeping Congress out from Kashmir means we have pushed the idea of India out from Kashmir valley” . “ We wanted at least to contest one seat from Kashmir valley so that the nationalistic people particularly Congress men would have an opportunity to propagate the Indian national interest in the area, but our leadership has not thought about this broader interest”, he adds.
Think About Your Kidneys on World Kidney Day – 2014
n India, one person in every ten people is suffering from kidney related diseases. Yet more than half of the patients won’t even know of their illness until their kidney is damaged by more than 60%. As per a study by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), approximately 1.50 lakh new kidney patients are added to the existing lot every year out of which only few are able to get some form of treatment. The problem has attained serious proportions. Every year lakhs of patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease are left untreated or do not get kidney transplant either due to lack of early diagnosis, lack of funding for the transplantation or due to unavailability of matching kidney donor. About five lakh kidney transplants are needed in India each year, but a few thousands of the patients could eventually get a new lease of life through this costly procedure. This year, 13th of March will be observed as World Kidney Day throughout the world. The day was annually marked since 2006 to raise awareness on importance of kidney and reduction of risk impact of kidney disease and associated health problems. Every year a specific theme is designated for World Kidney Day. “Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Aging” is the theme for current year. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has been established as the third biggest non-communicable disease after hyper-tension and diabetes. Also, the first two diseases too affect the kidneys and often culminate into CKD. According to figures, about 60% of the Chronic Kidney Disease patients have a history of either diabetes or high blood pressure or even both. If detected early, CKDs can be treated timely thereby reducing other complications and dramatically reduce the growing burden of deaths and disability from chronic renal
and cardiovascular diseases. It is necessary to acknowledge the risks involved around CKD. In the initial stages, the disease remains hidden and hence untreated. Health authorities have a daunting task to deal with high cost of treatment if no timely action is taken in view of the growing number of patients with CKD. World Kidney Day is a reminder to take action against CKD and make sure to monitor
the health of this vital organ. The day is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about these complicated organs and look for the way to keep them healthy. Early detection of issues related to kidneys will make a timely intervention possible and in turn putting up a successful fight against this ailment. The objective of World Kidney Day is to make everybody understand that diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors for CKD and thus encourage systematic screening of all patients with diabetes and hypertension for CKD. The emphasis is laid on educating medical fraternity about their key role in detecting and reducing the risk of CKD, partic-
ularly in high risk population. The local and national health authorities have to play a pivotal role in controlling CKD. Through this day, a message is passed on to encourage all governments to take action and invest in further kidney screening. In the eventuality of kidney failure, organ transplant has to be encouraged as the best option and the act of organ donation as a life-saving initiative. Government of India has enacted the Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Act, 2011 which contains various provisions for encouraging human organ donation including kidney donation and cadaver kidney donation. So far, many steps have been taken by the Government to prevent and manage the chronic kidney diseases. Dialysis facility has been made available with major Government hospitals. National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardio-vascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) has been launched by Government of India, which will help in reducing chronic renal diseases and incidences of renal failure. In order to create health awareness among the population, Government of India has launched special programmes being telecast on Doordarshan and All India Radio on various Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) including Chronic Kidney Diseases. Lack of timely treatment of CKD patients may leave them and their entire family in misery. Need of the hour is to adopt a healthy lifestyle and a proper periodical monitoring and screening of high-risk individuals. On this day let’s pledge to learn and share more information about this vital organ and the possible risks related to it.
