PREFACE
Seeking Beauty. Practice Truth. Graduated Summa Cum Laude from Illinois Institute of Technology accumulating honors and awards, including the STEM Plus Scholarship & Samuel Horowitz Memorial Award. Since then, I’ve continued to develop projects inside and outside the traditional scope of architecture into other mediums of art, design, and media. I share my talent and skillset as concept developer, designer, and strategist not only with the firm but also with local Chicago based artists, creatives and designers.

To enter into the European market, P.F. Chang’s developed a unique look to their brand to respond to the European market and clientele. Developed various design concepts and mood boards that could be used as a starting point for a project’s location with the thought that each location would be unique but united by a common thread. The thread is the story of how P.F. Chang’s was founded through Philip Chiang and the influence of his mother, well known restaurateur Cecilia Chiang. For the first location in Convent Garden in London, UK, a mix of the various moods came together to best fit within the unique space. Inspiration was taken from Philip’s artistic background and Cecilia’s formal hospitality service while embracing the rougher qualities of this ground & sub-level space.

Bacci’s Pizzaria (shown left) is an Italian pizzeria in the West Loop of Chicago. Here, I worked as project designer for the interior buildout. The design continues the clean concept with industrial touches that was featured in their flagship store. However, planning and coordination of equipment with the existing building needed careful consideration. The intent of the design was to make the pizza the center and the star of the show, but also to create a rustic environment by exposing natural finishes of the building. Millwork was thoughtfully detailed to not only highlight the food, but work with compressed spatial conditions.

Project manager and designer for the interior design and renovation of a tavern in an existing masonry building. With the support of a City of Chicago Neighborhood Fund Grant, Osito’s Tap is a new local nexus in the Little Village community of Chicago. As a tap room serving craft beers, whiskey, and tequila, the tavern aims to elevate and energize the Mexican-American, Hispanic, and Latino culture of the neighborhood by progressively blending old and new through design. The existing masonry building has a history as a speakeasy and hideout for mobsters to which we paid tribute by exposing the original masonry wall, using dark and detailed millwork at the bar, and by providing deep set booths at the perimeter. Its Mexican-American roots are also reflected in the ornate pattern work derived from the traditional talavera tile that erodes the walls and mirrored surface behind the bar. Beyond this, the aging building also needed life safety and structural updates. Structural framing was replaced to support the new occupancy load of the first floor. Establishing a new fire wall separation from its adjacent retail space was created by select masonry infill and a series of fire doors. Much like its unseen mobster activities in the past, the unseen renovations may not be recognized by visitors but they are an integral piece of the space.

Xavi and his brother have started a successful pastry cafe in Lakeview Chicago, with a mission to expand throughout the city. What is immediately noticeable is its eclectic furniture, soft-edged bohemian flare, giving a home-like atmosphere. Working as project manager and designer for their second cafe in a raw storefront at the Residential Moment Tower in Streeterville Chicago, the 5,000SF concrete space with 20’+ ceilings presented a considerable challenge. It being how to transform this extensive, cold storefront into a cozy atmosphere while recreating the recognizable aspects of Maison Marcel’s brand. We expanded their program from pastries and coffees to include small tapas and mixed drinks, thereby giving us the opportunity to divide the space by service function. We created zones catered to the program with areas to flex and transition in order to maintain cohesiveness. Dropping soffits, changing materials and tones, and, more than anything, creating moments to keep the patrons’ interest, enough to move through the space as the day progresses. This being a Jurassic Project, we created moments to explore pattern, ornament and composition.

Concept Development Client: Kanye West Team: Zach Walters (BIG) & Jennifer Park (Jurassic)
My contact info was passed onto Jason Peterson (CCO of Havas at the time), who worked with Kanye on the “WE LOVE” Campaign, and would help him assemble local teams for projects. Next frontier for Kanye: Architecture. He called it Yeezy Living an updated dwelling which supplies the functions one would like to have in housing ranging from GoKarting to Recording Studios. Kanye sought a local team to drive his initial ideas into a developed concept. Developing this concept began by looking at all the variables to transform this obscurity into space realized. The first challenge was placing these programs into spatial conditions. In its simplest, truest form, these spaces would mimic nature therefore placing the World into the Warehouse (the site that Ye had proposed). Conditions of the landscape would determine the programs that would function to create a new ecology - Yeezy Living. Though the conditions of the environment would have to be built or preexisting, a study of wrapping material to contain the Yeezy Home would be the next step. It would be a modular simple skin/ exoskeleton. Ye’s vision was to deploy this architectural feat around the world while being capable to set up/ infilate/ build in a day. As he put it, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, but the Yeezy Living will be”. Last Kanye told us he was working with Jacques Herzog of Herzog & De Mueron.

Fashion Design Concept Development Chicago Creatives Shoot the Sh*t
As part of many projects where I delved into various mediums, my next venture was into fashion. Particularly keen on silhouette, I transformed sketches into fully developed pieces, focusing on their design and pattern. Growth in this practice came from experimentation as well as consulting with a tailor and pattern-maker to construct my pieces. Admittedly, branding and market strategy quickly became the focus of my work as opposed to designing more clothing.
PERSONAL PROJECTS
Well-designed architecture and the use of the right materials can create atmosphere, influencing mood. Likewise, the right fabrics and patterns take on a persona to achieve the same. Reimagining 2 Patterns that traditionally cause me to take on new persona: the Indian/Pakistani shalwar kameez and the Japanese kimono. Architectural material: Roman Travertine from Mies’ work. Photography concept exhibits the artists relationship with their work, progress made through process and reflection.

Post-graduation I spent a year on many short but fun projects ranging in multiple mediums: photography, videography, illustration, editorial design, and fashion design. Despite the fun I had independently diving into these mediums, a critical component missing from learning and becoming better in any one particular field was the lack of a knowledgable network from which I could acquire feedback. The best, most constructive aspect of studying Architecture was the Studio program, where a brutally honest critique would follow every presentation, thereby offering the opportunity to learn. To obtain and work towards what I was missing, I had to begin creating a network, offering the incentive of sharing their perspectives alongside my peers of respectable local creatives. The information shared on the podcast not only displays individuals’ stories and their accomplishments, but also helps listeners discover which field they would like to explore while receiving insider information about what the industry looks like. The podcast became an effective way for me to build a network of professionals that could critique any future work of mine, regardless of medium, while also giving essential insight to creative industries.

Beauty.Truth.
CONCLUSION
Seeking Beauty. Practice Truth. The greatest accomplishment Architecture can achieve, is creating lasting beauty. I believe that the focus in every design practice should be the process; iterations, critiques, brutal honesty - to unveil truth. We are drawn to it, the body and eye wants it.
