A LOOK AT ARCHITECTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, FURNITURE, DESIGN, & GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION.
Zubair Bhaidani Chicago, IL USA. zu.bhaidani@gmail.com 312.852.9926
To whom it may concern, I would like to invite you to browse through my design portfolio covering academmic and personal work. I am an ambitious, heavy thinking, creative problem-solving individual. My experiences and broad range of work have allowed me to refine larger group of abilities. This portfolio explores- in depth- selected projects. Studying Architecture has brought me great pride. More than any other field of study, architecture is a way to understand hierarchy in thinking, by creating a system for designing and working through a creative process. To learn how to think is to learn how to see the world in a new light; with the ablity to dissect unanswered questions within one’s surrounding environment. I’m inspired by these moments and believe that where an answer is needed, it is one that can only be designed. Thank you,
Zubair Bhaidani

The Task With guidance from professor Frank Flury. The task for this project was to study the Chicago neighborhood known as the Back of the Yards. Our focus involved creating a program enhanced by architecture design to reconnect the neighborhood and the city. This was a collaborative project worked on by groups of three. As a group, we were awarded IIT’s Samuel Horwitz Scholarship for best studio project in our year.

01_REACT
The inspiration behind the project began with the realization that the neighborhood suffers from a great socioeconomic disparity. Decades ago, the Back of the Yards had a strong economy based on food packaging and shipping. To solve its current market, we looked at different possible sources of income-wood was our answer. Moreover, we realized that by initiating a woodshop program, we could also educate the neighborhood’s youth to stimulate interest in wood craftsmanship, and trade schools.

The architectural design facilitates the program by allocating sufficient space for wood production and project display for both the neighborhood and Chicago commuters on the intersecting CTA Orange Line. The design gives the Back of the Yards a new identity that empowers and give new hope to its people.

The Task With guidance from professors Peter Landon and Bryant Pitak. The task for this project was to study the Chicago neighborhood East Garfield Park. Our focus was to reconnect the neighborhood and the city by using a program enhanced through architecture. This was a collaborative project worked on by groups of two.

East Garfield Park and its residents live in poor socioeconomic status surrounded by small arts & crafts related shops lacking store fronts. The combination results in a less than acquainted community. The goals of this project included providing affordable, rentable spaces for new and present artists to live, collaborate, and produce work. The architectural design lends itself to indoor food growing while the exterior offers an on site market to sell local and program goods. Our proposal’s character creates opportunity for people to interact naturally and create a better community.

Mobility: Walkability
The Task With guidance from SOM professors Robert Bracken and Arathi Gowda. The task for this project was to study the different classes of transportation in Chicago with an in depth emphasis on one mode. This was a collaborative project worked on by groups of two.
MOBILITY
RETHINK CHI
The Concept After examining the Chicago census from past years, the population’s shift towards utalizing public forms of transportation and walking became apparent. We decided to concentrate our study on walkability. Research concentrated on understanding the importance of a walkable city, encompassing the physics and sociological perspective of space.

01_MOBILITY
We decided to look at Chicago through this lens in form of a matrix. Created to make new findings on Chicagos quality of walkability.

North Avenue
Insight Foliage needed to cure the otherwise bland concrete jungle. Traffic becomes congested and unsafe when sidewalk elements interrupt flow. Expansion in horizon distorts relative space and environment. Buildings serve as bookends to limit horizon line and create better space.
Active sidewalks are not always the ‘best’ sidewalks. No clear view to exchange brings attention to sidewalk. Sidewalks extending to become well made parks is a necessity for mental health and well-being.

Rethink Chi: Riverwalk
The Task With guidance from SOM professors Robert Bracken and Arathi Gowda. The premise for this project was a continuation of the last, Mobility: Walkability. Using the greater understanding of a specific mode of transportation to create a design project applicable to Chicago. This was a collaborative project worked on by groups of three.
River Program Before
RETHINK CHI
Previously, we established a matrix as a method to understand walkability. This conceptualism became the drive for designing and constructing this project. Less than 5% of Chicagoans use walking or cycling as their main modes of transportation due to safety concerns. The River, an untouched and underutilized source, could serve as a connective tissue between the North and South neighborhoods of Chicago with the potential to conduct 5,000 cyclists per lane per hour. New Program is needed to aid the path, keeping it activated throughout the year. This is where the project shifts towards Architecture. River Program After

What characterizes individuals are the struggles they have endured, the events that have shaped them, and the things they still FEAR. I sat down to interview four individuals and began by simply getting to know them and finally asking “What is your biggest fear? The faces of the individuals were not included in the images so the audience who relates with the audio recording would mentally reflect themselves in that position. The images were placed in perfectly sized bowls for one’s hands. The exterior of the basin was coarse and cold to touch while the audio recording could be heard quietly thereby encouraging a close proximity between the art piece and the audience.

Mass Product: The Set
The Task With guidance from professor Paul Pettigrew the task for this project was to create a set of functional furniture pieces that can be produced in a weekend.
Initial concept sketches
The Concept The requirements for the project demanded that I develop an effective process that would allow me to produce pieces with a consistent quality. The design consisted of layered triangle pieces at a scale that lends itself to multiple functions. Two 6” tall triangle stands, one 1’ tall and a 1’6” stand the heights serve as different possible stand functions.

The second project constitutes a headboard with multiple functions. The nature of the headboard is capable of keeping private items such as clothing hidden, while also serving as a well suited furniture piece for smaller rooms where excess furniture is not desired.

On the left page, I was interested in two things: analyzing the right proportions of the face and what factors contribute to the balance. Is there an applicable ratio that produces custom glasses which perfectly complements the owner’s face? Secondly, I was interested in developing a design for a more interchangeable pair of glasses.
