Weakness: is a perfectionist, detail oriented and has no sense of direction. Born in Asia, in 1999 however likes to act as if birth place was London in 1899. Avid fan of Oscar Wilde; even more avid fan of Khaleed Hosseini. Plays more than five instruments yet shockingly has no sense of rhythm. Travels the world yet still perfers eating Digestive cookies. A series of detached, experiental spaces for the individual to assume personas based on the affect created in the environment. The first space, inspired by the film Dreams, is a series of large, irregular columns filling a well lit space with translucent walls, giving the occupant a sense of massiveness and calm irregularity. The second space, inspired by the film Orlando, by contrast, is dark and dramatically lit, with a porous material covering the walls, giving the room a sense of moving light. The final space, inspired by Vertigo, is a upwardly extending spiral. The occupant is given the sense of height and depth without changing elevation.

Deep into the future...The year is 3018. Civilization has grown to sickening heights and moved across the galaxy to continue our ever consuming need to mine and destroy every resource we find. Back on earth, the disenfranchised and surpressed are left in the ruins of mother other. Here we gather and here we shall rise. There is a secret on earth that the colonies do not know about... While humans have been busy visiting other plants, someone came here...& Earth’s visitors left us a gift. Scattered, black, hypermatter across the globe! The location of this matter are said to behealing and transcending. We have built communtiies around it. Always open. To everyone. A place for all...to do all.

Lost. Stolen. Cut. Destroyed. The Koh-i-Noor diamond, once the largest diamond in the world, has a long, complicated and frustrating history. Many countries, nations and heads of state claim it as their own. The diamond is in the possession of the British Monarchy and is a part of the crown jewels. For now. Queue one of two of our protagonists, Noor, a 23 year old, confused but angry, art-restoration student, who’s dad passes away. Going through his stuff Noor discovers a passion and fierce drive her father had for knowledge, literature and historical artifacts. Overcome with emotion, mourning, illegal substances and jet lag, Noor decides that the theft of the Koh-i-Noor, is the reason her father led a short, unfulfilling life. Those bastards! Recruiting the help of her childhood best friend, Raj, through emotional and other forms of blackmail, Noor hatches a plan to steal the Koh-i-Noor and return it to India. With her art restoration degree and Raj’s geological engineering career, the two are able to pull off one of the greatest heists of all time. Hold on, thats not where it ends! With the Koh-i-Noor in their posession, the lives of the two and the reality around them begins to shift. Past, present and future begin to meld. Mad maharajas in abandoned desert palaces, and anarchist fighters in the time of Partition all take the form of our protagonists. Our protagonists begin to explore what it means to be South Asian, what it means to an immigrant, what it means to be a child and what it is to be human. An original screenplay that is an exploration of the colonization and decolonization of the mind and soul. Who has the Koh-i-Noor?

character profile
Noor ( Jibrani) Noor is 23 years old, studying art restoration at Columbia and going through a crisis. And a serious one at that, this one isn’t just brought on by her copious amounts of student debt or reliance on marijuana to make her feel something. This is about her feeling like a fraction of a human being because of the colour of her skin and the name she was given. From a Pakistani background, Noor remembers little of the home that they left behind, other than the spice in the air and the heat of the sun. She does know that her parents never felt at home since they left Pakistan, and this gives her unmanageable guilt. This crisis intensifies when her father passes away, quietly and unexpectedly on a public bus. To cope with his death and the frustrations she has involving colonism all in one sweep, Noor blames the theft of the Koh-i-Noor diamond (her namesake) for her father having a hard and unsuccessful life. So naturally, she decides to steal it.

“How else are we supposed to reclaim our agency from the hands of our malicious colonizers?“

Yeh Sham Mastaani continues to plays in the background as Raj and his family zoom into the cul de sac. All the street parking is filled. People are shuffling into the small East London house. Aapka saathi madh gaya hai aur aap Kishor Kumar kai ganay bajaare hain? {Your friend died and you’re playing Kishor Kumar songs right now?} Kya? Main ne kya paap kardiya?
Yeh Sham Mastaani plays, wide shot of London zooms into a girl sitting on the roof of a duplex house. Hi. Salaam, for all the uncles and aunties. My name is Noor.
Noor, turn the music off! Have some sharam!
{Sharam: Shame} I’m 23 years old. I’m stoned out of my mind. I’m sitting on the roof of my parent’s house in East London.
Noor turn the goddamn music off! It’s abba’s funeral!
{Abba: Dad} Oh, and my dad just died. My dad. Waqar Jibrani. Born in 1950. Lahore, Pakistan to a clock maker and his novel reading wife. Raised in the Walled City. Obsessed with collecting stamps. Listened to strictly Kishor Kumar and Mohammad Rafi. Danced from time to time…in the company of no one, of course. Wore the largest glasses available to man, as fashion dictated. Dipped his hair in petroleum every morning, for the ladies. At the age of 23, he caught the eye of Seema, a girl at his local college. So the got married. And had three children. {Things were simpler back then.} Then load shedding increased and things got bleak and all his pals started jumping ship so Waqar got himself and his small family a shiny VISA to the UK. And they left. Forever. So here we are. My name is Noor, by the way. I’m Waqar’s daughter. A bad one at that. I wasn’t even in the country when he died.
{What? What sin have I committed?} Hi. Namaste, aunties and uncles who are tuning in. My name is Raj. These are my parents. Nithin and Shweta. Both from Delhi. Moved to London in the 1980s, right after getting married. Their parents introduced them because my dad had an engineering degree and a VISA to London and my mum was young, quiet and made good tea. She was also had an honours degree in mathematics and won ten regional mathematics championships. {But of course, that didn’t matter.}
Stop scolding me!
Stop acting like a child who needs scolding! Your son is better than you! Thats me. I’m there son. Born and raised in East London. Was the perfect Indian son. Got good grades, went to a good school. Watched cricket every World Cup, went to the temple every Saturday. {Boring, I know.} Still couldn’t keep my parents marriage together. Screaming continues But not even looming threat of intervention from the United States could keep a resentful marriage together. At least thats what my childhood friend, Noor, says. That’s why we’re here actually. Noor. Her dad, my dad’s first friend in London, just died. Of a heart attack. How a lot of uncles seem to go, unfortunately. We’re going to the funeral. Or the pre-funeral. Or maybe the post-funeral. Honestly none of us know how Muslim funerals work. I don’t even think Noor knows.
Had a heart attack, of course.
Car switches off and Nithin and Sweta begin climbing out of the car, still bickering. Raj climbs out the back seat.
On a bus.
Remember to touch aunty’s feet, beta. And ask Shamsher and Noor how there are doing. And ask Shamsher about his new job.
Too nervous to say anything to the bus driver.
Their dad just died, mum. This doesn’t seem like the best time to network.
Do what your mother says, Raj. Don’t talk back.
So he just sat there. And died. Yeh Sham Mastaani continues to play This was his favourite song.
Noor, turn the music of and come downstairs! Khuda ka wastah.
Trying to come to terms with the fact that I’ll be treated like a 13 year old for the rest of my life. {Let’s have a moment of silence.} Camera pans up to the window of the house. Noor is standing looking down and Raj and her eyes meet.
{Khuda ka wastah: God’s sake.}
Let’s go in. (eyes still locked with Noor as she turns to leave the window.)
What are you supposed to say to your grade school best friend when their dad dies? 57
Acha, I’m coming. Stop yelling. Jesus.
