May I first convey my warmest congratulations to The Zubin Foundation on its remarkable achievements in the last year, including the opening of the first facility in Hong Kong, Zubin’s Family Centre, for ethnic minority children with special educational needs.

The Foundation’s impact on society is on a wide dimension, ranging from offering free-ofcharge one-to-one mental health counselling for adults and children, to making regular policy recommendations to the HKSAR Government.

With their vision, belief, and determination, I am confident that they are able to help better the lives of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Manyoftheproblemsinourcommunityexistbecauseofsystemicloopholesandsowe championpublicpoliciestoimprovethelivesofethnicminorities.Engagingwiththe Governmentovermanyyearshasledtotheprovisionofmentalhealthsupportforethnic minorities,specialneedseducationsupportforpublicschoolswithethnicminority children,andtheinclusionofethnicminorityhistoryintextbooks.Theseareallsignificant milestonesforethnicminoritiesandwearegratefulfortheGovernment’songoing engagement.

Our aim is to improve lives and in 2022, we directly helped 16,000 ethnic minority individuals. Tonight, I hope you give generously so we may continue to reduce their suffering and provide them with opportunities. It is my privilege and honour to welcome you to The Zubin Foundation’s Annual Fundraising Dinner 2023

Tonight, you will learn about the impressive work Shalini and her team have done through some of the toughest years not just in Hong Kong, but around the world as well. You will hear stories from people whose lives have been impacted and how they have been able to see the light at the end of the tunnel thanks to the Foundation’s good work.

The ethnic minorities in Hong Kong are one of the most marginalised communities with one in four people living in poverty. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has left many families without work and unable to put food on the table leaving them with a feeling of isolation and loneliness.

During these trying times, The Zubin Foundation was there for the community providing food, free counselling for adults and children, supporting women in distress and helping ethnic minority youth break the cycle of inter-generational poverty through education and employment. In order to continue doing this meaningful and important work, we need your help.

Tonight, 100% of your donations will go directly to The Zubin Foundation This is possible because of the generosity of our Title Sponsor, Purviz R Shroff, MH, and her late husband Rusy M. Anaitha Nair is a woman of many talents, from academia to theatre, music, yoga, as well as hairdressing.

Her flair and love for cinema led her to a big breakthrough in 2007 when she was cast as Aaliya Bose in the Bollywood smash hit ChakDeIndia alongside arguably India's biggest superstar, Shah Rukh Khan.

After a fulfilling career in entertainment, Anaitha decided to follow her heart Her marriage brought her to Hong Kong It is in this city, away from the spotlight, she began pursuing her other true passion, hairdressing.

She trained with Paul Gerrard in Hong Kong. Post which she certified with Vidal Sassoon Academy in San Francisco and Wella in London as a Master colour expert.

Recently, she was awarded the “Sassy Best of Hongkong Readers Awards 2023” for Best Salon, all while raising her almost 10-year-old daughter.

While she is juggling her many roles, Anaitha makes time for new experiences and living life to the fullest, whether it’s painting for hours on a Sunday or climbing a mountain. Follow her on Instagram @anaithanair.

Our work helps the poorest and most marginalised ethnic minorities. This pledge is about helping us to keep the lights on so we can continue to help low-income families in distress.

Typically, it starts with a call on the Call Mira helpline and then we provide support to the person in need. These are some of the services we would offer a family :

Post-COVID, we have seen a significant rise in women who experience isolation and sometimes abandonment. Most of these women are mothers to young children.

We help the women and children find safe shelter, we provide them with food and we cover other basic life costs including transport, mobile phone, internet access, and the time of our staff. We also connect them to government social welfare services and support.

After the initial crisis, we focus our efforts on helping the woman develop a sense of self and connecting them to other women.

For HK$7,500, we can help 1 woman and her children for 6 months.

Forchildrenwhoareexperiencingdepressionandpoverty.

Our Children’s Counselling Centre is trauma-based, one-to-one counselling for ethnic minority children from low-income families. They are all between 5 and 15 years old. The most common trauma they have experienced include:

Witnessing violence at home, often towards their mother.

Experiencing bullying and race-based discrimination in schools.

Feeling isolated and rejected, and a sense of not belonging. Conflict at home with their parents or with grandparents.

For $1,500, we are able to fund 3 sessions of therapy. A child receives on average 25 sessions.

Meet DeborahMannas, a talented singer and songwriter based in Hong Kong. Her music is a fusion of jazz, soul, funk, and pop rock, showcasing her versatility and unique style. She has been featured in major news outlets such as RTHK, HKEJ, HK Confidential, Life on Lantau, and China News Agency. Besides her musical career, she is also the founder of IMTAC MAG, an e-zine that aims to empower and inspire young women.

Tonight, Deborah is accompanied by:

BhoyetSamonte, a well-known figure in the Hong Kong music scene, who is admired for his exceptional piano skills. He has performed at prestigious venues such as the Conrad, Four Seasons, and Intercontinental hotels. His fingers move with incredible speed and grace on the keys, leaving audiences in awe.

JonBenard is a well-known and versatile drummer who is at ease with diverse genres, including jazz, soul, funk, pop, rock, African beats, and worship music. Moira is a 19-year-old student at the University of Hong Kong. She is a former client of The Zubin Foundation's Children’s Counselling Centre.

She produced ‘Melting Pot’ in her final year at high school when Moira began to appreciate the ethnic diversity in her public school. The artwork shows a representation of her school together with the symbolic flowers of Hong Kong, the Philippines, India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Bibi is a 14-year-old girl who lives in public housing. She has lost both her kidneys. She receives intensive medical treatments in the hospital four times a week and as a result, misses 2 days of school. Her illness has impacted her schoolwork significantly and she is often exhausted.

Twice a week she comes to Zubin’s Family Centre where a tutor helps her keep up with Chinese reading and writing. She is also given art classes. She has produced 2 pieces of art, that demonstrate her feelings.
