Dear Friends and Supporters,

Let me start by thanking each of you for your support COVID-19 has been detrimental to many in the ethnic minority community We could not have made it through the last three years without the inequivalent support of our supporters - including donors, and well-wishers Thank you

2023 was another significant year for our community, with large numbers of ethnic minorities continuing to lose jobs caused by the fallout from the pandemic Employment in catering continued to fall and airport and construction-related jobs remained low With no income, families continued to struggle, and children and women tended to suffer most In addition, this overall sense of hopelessness has also impacted youth, caused by fear of instability around them.

Our women’s helpline, Call Mira, continued to receive calls for food We responded by continuing to provide Care Boxes to those families in need Girls who were unable to afford menstruation supplies received Red Boxes Call Mira gave us a window into the lives of women subjected to violence at home and we saw requests for legal support increase With months of staying indoors, we saw more adults and children suffering from depression and anxiety, and requests for mental health counselling rise The impact on the mental health of this community, already in poverty pre-pandemic, will be long-lasting

I am grateful for all you do to help us in our mission to improve the lives of Hong Kong’s poorest ethnic minorities.

With gratitude and blessings, Shalini

I really appreciate the Women’s upskilling project The Zubin Foundation organised for me and other ladies It helps me with my depression Before the project, I was not sure what I could do with my life, but staying at home This project making use of my craftmanship allows me to understand that I am worthy I see that I am capable to support myself – even a little I hope The Zubin Foundation will continue to have projects like this for women like me. It is not only about the little money that I got from selling my products, but also it represents my value.

I am thankful for being given this opportunity and using it as my best aid The scholarship is allowing me to concentrate on my studies instead of worrying about my financial situation The workshops that The Zubin Foundation offered to scholars have been useful in managing myself better The sponsor is also providing me with opportunities to network with leaders in the industry, which helps me path my career

Fahim Hossain, Pakistani studying Year 3 at the University of Hong Kong

The Zubin Foundation Scholarship Recipient

I had the opportunity to mentor two lovely women in the last 2 years Both were unique in their own ways, but the common thread was being migrants and coming from a difficult background I am in awe of how responsible, hard working and mature they are at such a young age how prepared they were for the sessions and how dedicated in their efforts I am happy that my tiny contribution has helped them in some way. I wish all the students the very best and bright futures I appreciate The Zubin Foundation for their fantastic work. I’m proud to be working for Wells Fargo for partnering on such an important initiative

Shilpa Ramdas, Wells Fargo Mentor for The Zubin Foundation Scholarships

It has been a privilege to have supported the Scholarship programme over the last few years Being able to have even the smallest positive impact on a student’s life and to have the ability to mentor and create pathways of opportunity is an honour The Zubin Foundation’s meticulous selection process gives a future to bright young individuals, and we hope to be able to support the cause going forward and hope others do too.

The Zubin Foundation works with different companies to offer us internship opportunities, and I was involved in important tasks like creating marketing collaterals, curating products, conducting research etc In both my internships at Linklaters and Merlin Entertainments the ideas I contributed were used For one of the projects that we were working on, I suggested visual effects to make it more attractive to the college students, and the idea was adopted This made me feel valued Before I started the internship, I didn’t know that my voice is important

PARENTSANDCHILDREN

In the ethnic minority community, families tend to be larger in size, and it is not uncommon to have five or more children in a family. It is mostly mothers who take responsibility for their children, and we provide them with parenting workshops and support groups so they can learn and build friendships.

Our Special Educational Needs Centre is Hong Kong’s first, and it provides therapy for ethnic minority children with ADHD and Autism. We work in collaboration with government schools and NGOs who refer parents and children to us.

Workshopsand SupportGroups

Parenting workshops and support groups run, across schools and NGOs in Hong Kong for ethnic minority parents with children in government schools support group meetings

The Parenting training offered by The Zubin Foundation is very helpful I used to have difficulty in communicating with my children, and I was frustrated seeing that ‘I’m not a good parent ’ After The Zubin Foundation’s Parenting Training, I learnt the Timing Trick I have tried using the timer to manage my children, and it works very well In the beginning, it was not easy but now my children know that the minute the screen time starts, so does the timer Using the skill has reduced my child’s tantrums

Firstly I would like to thank The Zubin Foundation I was in a situation where I had little kids and I would throw my frustration on them, not only that but the tension from my home made me feel negative I had talked to the staff, and they offered me counselling support where I talked to my counsellor and shared all my problems, especially with the kids My counsellor handled me well and taught me ways to change myself and my kids I took her advice and now I can see so much improvement not only in my household, but also within myself Now, I am very happy with myself I would also recommend the service to others to share their problems and situations.

Aditi (Alias), female, 42-year-old Indian Client of Ethnic Minority Well-being Centre

Whenever I have been upset, my counselling sessions have made me feel better. I have learnt to express my anger through my art I have started making things out of clay at home to help me feel calm I have started eating more healthy food Before, I used to eat only junk food and never ate at school, but now I do, my mother packs my lunch I’m so glad I met you and everyone at the Centre You all are so nice Thank you for your help, it’s really helpful Thank you

Iqra (Alias), female, 12-year-old Pakistani Client of Children’s Counselling Centre

I don’t know how to thank The Zubin Foundation; my daughter’s life has come back She has started living again She listens to the counsellor and follows everything she says. Thank you.

Working at the Children’s Counselling Centre involves witnessing the openness, courage, and self-reflection of children and teenagers in therapy They don’t shy away from cultural stigma, ready for honest conversations. With allocated weekly sessions when it’s ONLY and ALL about them they feel valued and empowered The fact h h l coming to Zubin’s Family Centre, calling it their “ secon trust us, imposing a huge responsibility to ensure we d provide the utmost quality care. Some days, it’s simply instrument to ONE child and ONE family, which for the world If we don’t champion them, who will?

Clients who have come to our Centre usually presented with symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, anger control issues, grief or self-harm tendencies Some of the common issues underlying these symptoms are family conflicts, marital or relationship conflicts, domestic violence, intergenerational trauma Through counselling, we work with clients to develop resilience by learning strategies for emotional management, thought restructuring, self-care, problemsolving; eventually learning ways to handle their situations in a more effective and healthier way. The counselling also helps to promote their awareness about mental health We have seen clients have found it beneficial and have also referred their friends or family members to seek help for their mental health
