Ethnic Minority Well-being Centre – 1:1 Counselling Service for Ethnic Minorities

The Ethnic Minority Well-being Centre is an initiative of the Hong Kong SAR Government commenced in December 2023 and operated by The Zubin Foundation. The Centre provides counselling and mental health support services to the ethnic minority community of Hong Kong. This initiative was presented in the 2022 Policy Address.

The Zubin Foundation has been providing counselling and mental health support services to the ethnic minority community since 2019. The impact of its services has been validated by the Department of Psychiatry of The University of Hong Kong and published in the British Medical Journal Mental Health series.

The Centre offers free one-to-one counselling for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. The service is provided by counsellors and sessions are conducted in English, Hindi, Urdu and Nepali.

Some common issues our clients come to talk to us about are:

• Abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)

• Anger Management

• Anxiety

• Behavioral/Mood Change/Depression

• Study/Career Issues/Unemployment

• Discriminations

• Family/Relationship Conflicts

• Grief and Loss

• Low Self Esteem

• Social Skill Building

• Stress

• Trauma

In addition to providing counselling services, our staff also conduct awareness talks for NGO's and schools as well as capacity trainings for healthcare professionals.

Description The 18111 Mental Health Support Hotline was an initiative put forward in “The Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address” to coordinate existing counselling services provided by the Government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), allowing those in need to obtain assistance through calling the number. It provides immediate support and counselling services to members of the public from all backgrounds and of all ages.

Description The hotline is manned by registered social workers on a 24-hour basis. Immediate risk assessment and counselling service are provided to victims of sexual violence and individuals/families encountering domestic violence or other family crises.
