Switzerland Taking meeting groups to Alpine heights By George Seli

ith the reliability of a fine timepiece, the picturesque country of Switzerland draws travelers from America year after year. That visitation is on the upswing as of late, with overnights by U.S. residents in 2013 at more than 1.5 million, a 4 percent increase over 2012. Switzerland’s virtues are as evident to the tourist as they are to the meeting attendee, who can enjoy everything from mountaineering to museum tours after business is concluded at a five-star hotel or high-tech conference center. Indeed, the Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau reports that the number of MICE groups visiting the country in 2013 saw no decline from 2012. At the same time, the Swiss have been busy improving their meetings infrastructure 150
with numerous hotel and convention center projects in many of their beloved cities and cantons. GENEVA
While Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city and its financial hub, Geneva, the second largest, has the distinction of being a hub of international politics. The UN European headquarters is located here, as is the Palais Wilson, headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Culture is also a focus of the city, which is home to 100 cultural associations and has Switzerland’s largest budget for culture. Groups can explore dozens of museums and stroll through Old Town, the country’s biggest historical city and FACILITIES & DESTINATIONS 2014 SUPERBOOK

Geneva’s many cultural experiences can be complemented with gastronomical ones: The city boasts 1,200 restaurants, including 55 gourmet establishments (eight starred by the Michelin Guide) and 140 exotic food restaurants representing 30 nationalities. The city is also known for its chocolate and wine, with 30 master chocolatiers and 1,400 hectares of vineyards. The Beau-Rivage Geneva, built in 1865, has one of the country’s largest wine cellars, and is among the city’s 15 five-star hotels. FACILITIES & DESTINATIONS 2014 SUPERBOOK

urich is much more than banking. In reality, groups will discover a city bubbling with both urban style and natural beauty. And while the Swiss metropolis is clearly a global center of high finance, the city offers plenty of unique options for groups. Nature-wise, the city sits right on Lake Zurich, so aside from offering a sophisticated global meetings infrastructure, the compact metropolis--sometimes referred to as a boutique city--presents groups with a variety of natural activities to complement its modern conference facilities. “I call it the water town,” says Roland Ottiger, head of markets & business development for Zurich Tourism. “Here you have a large metropolitan city, but with a lake in the heart of the city. When you organize a meeting during the summer, this is one of the feelings that you get from Zurich: Yes, it is a city, yet at the same time, it has this combination of city and nature.” Groups can meet in various venues near the lake or on the lake. For example, one can take a boat from the city center to Quai 61,

a lakeside restaurant, bar and event space. Giardino Verde, in another case, provides three tropical greenhouses for numerous events. In still another instance, the Uetliberg, Zurich’s own mountain, provides panoramic views of the Alps and the city. For planners targeting the main inner city, AURA, a luxury venue for high-tech events at Zurich’s Paradeplatz, is over the top. Other venues like Papeirsaal und Folium and Giesserei Oerlikon are located in repurposed buildings, showcasing Zurich’s urban edginess. When the meeting is done, Zurich has all the high-end shopping one could want, and the Zurich West neighborhood, a former industrial part of town, has morphed over the last 10 years into a combination of artisan shops, creative urbanism and high-tech companies. All in all, when compared to London, Paris, Vienna and other sprawling European cities, Zurich is very compact, offering a very high level of infrastructure, but on a NETHERLANDS GERMANY boutique scale. BELGIUM “You have a wide Zurich variety of experiences, but in a relatively SWITZERLAND FRANCE small area,” Ottiger says. mf ITALY London

Zürich als „Luxury MICE City of the Year“ ausgezeichnet

September 2014 in Peking statt. Foto: Trafo Hotel AG
