Project featured on Aarhus School of Architecture’s website: “Outstanding Graduate Projects” http://aarch.dk/info/updates/ news/3-outstanding-graduateprojects/

Project earned a travel grant of 20.000 DKR by Tina Tychsen Rasmussen og Henrik Søholt Christensens Rejsefond for research of Syrian Settlement areas in Istanbul

The project has its starting point on the global issue, the Syrian Civil War, which has overwhelmed host communities with the refugee topic. The issue is tri-fold: Adding to the problem of integration there are issues of habitation as well as educating the new generation. My master thesis is a project based on a global, geopolitic and social issues which has resulted in planning and design of an “educational halfway house” for adolescent refugees in Istanbul, where the main focus is on link-education, integration & personal recovery.

The project is a proposal of the adaptation between the programme and the context in symbiosis with the urban fabric, the history and social values of the site. It also aims to discuss development of recreative spaces for urban refugees in the transitional stage between being a refugee and being a part of a new society.

The site has an important role in the collective and long-term integration among the people living in microcommunity “mahalles in Istanbul, that would allow the refugees to be adopted to their new society easily; the site is a catalyst in integrating the adolescents into their new context.

pavilion and landscape design

The project has been nominated for the “Presidents Medals” in August 2015. The award has been given by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

COCOON is a cross-cultural joint project and case study between 18 students from Aarhus School of Architecture and CARE School of Architecture, Trichy. The project was designed and generated digitally in Aarhus, before getting built by all students in 1:1 at “Krishi Vigyan Kendra”; a research and education centre for noneducated farmers in Trichy, South India. The main idea behind the project is to investigate architecture from a sustainable point of view, using local materials, local labour in a low-key environment, but keeping the expectations high on experimenting with the potentials of bamboo as the main design and construction element. The pavilion is an additional social gathering area providing a shaded leisure environment that adapts the South-Indian climate.

Photo of the inner part of the pavilion The shell is made of compressed square banana-leaves.

Selected manual photos

My work for COCOON lied in the fields below; - Plinth design + construction (w. Gitte Vistnes & Oliver T. Edwards ) - Landscape design + construction (w. Gitte Vistnes) - Water collector design + construction (w. Gitte Vistnes) - Documentation responsible ~photography, drawings, text - Book design ~ composition, photography, drawings, text (w. Oliver T. Edwards)

CO CO O N : the l ands cape de s ig n KRISHY VIGYAN KENDRA is surrounded by rice fields, trees, ponds and endless species of plants. We, as the landscape design team thought it was important for the farm to have a leisure area around the pavilion that would connect the pavilion to the the existing farm school. All materials used in the design are waste materials from a local granite factory designed as benches, paths, water collector and plinth.

v i s i r i g a r d en visiri [ tamil ] ~ fan the name is inspired by the palm trees in the garden.

COCOON: t h e water c o l l e cto r de sig n Our idea was to add a poetic feature in collecting the rain water for some moments, before letting it out in the nature. It is a pure granite stone with existing holes from its previous cut-process. We interpreted the holes as canals leading the rainwater to both sides. The stones were cut the size as a square, and placed in the middle of the column on an anthracite flooring made of colored cement.

The project is the first phase of COCOON, and our proposal to the educational pavilion design to be built in Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Trichy India. Our inspiration is based on the architect Laurie Baker’s architectural philosophy, where the brick sets the base for his compositions and design. Our aim was to design a sustainable low-cost pavilion while minimizing cost and environmental impact by using recycled materials. We wanted to adapt the environmental climate and highlight the potentials of the brick in the sustainable design. urban design

The project is situated at the river Spree in Berlin; an urban void where river and the historical S-bahn (railway) cross each other and create a divided urban space - on the border of fragmented city structure, art spaces, and vivid infrastructure. The programme focuses on the existing spatial qualities of the S-Bahn as a cultural heritage, and how these can be activated in a new programme.

The railway divides the site into a northern and southern part, but with the arches under the railway, the zones are connected. With that feature we set the programme for private, semi-private and public spaces, which lead to the design of 1-2 storey apartments, art spaces and art gallery connected with the open public areas cafes, park area, tribunes and passages. Images: - Panoramic site - photo - Mapping diagram - Situational diagrams

“Vertical Living Hamburg + is a conceptual housing project that rethinks habitation potentials of Hamburg and discusses the strict building policies that got adopted after the World War II.”

My interest to generate an idea of future student apartments is based on the general issue of inaffordability to live in the city center as a student. I created an apartment complex in the heart of Hamburg that on street level integrates with the existing brick buildings, but flourishes on the top towards the sky with a steel construction and two columnal axis holding the structure.

The triangular steel construction creates a sharp contrast to the existing traditional buildings and grows towards the sky. It breaks the rythm, ensures curiousity, and generates a facial dialogue to the city with its reflective facade design.

The architecture focuses on the transition between the different scales of the visitors journey. Beginning with the contrast between the impressive perspective from the middle of the fjord and the isolated inner space of the ship, users ascend the dock in close relation to the water.

Upon leaving, the cruise ships themselves help put the scale of the landscape into perspective, contrasting with the linear movement from land to pier which, together, offer visitors unique experiences of nature and culture. Geiranger receives aproximately 300 000 visitors a year, accomodating enormous changes of flow and structural needs between seasons.

By extending urban space via the promenade cruise dock, the project seeks to facilitate a closer relationship between the human and natural elements by hosting unique interactions and perspectives between the fjord, toursists and locals and people from the area.

tionperspective 1:250

Our strategy for a sustainable cruise ship terminal in Geiranger is to reduce the material impact on the landscape, e.g. by providing waste management and On Shore Power Supply. The dock’s reduced ecological impact will support Geigranger as a place for culture and recreation all year round.

STUDIO X / urban laboratory & exhibition space Design of Studio X Istanbul

“Studio-X Istanbul is an urban laboratory that aims to identify the current and future issues facing the city and seeks to generate innovative forms of thinking for their solutions. This is a living space: it exists to generate ideas, discuss, and even make mistakes. Studio-X Istanbul strives to host the flourishing of good ideas around urban issues and the development of pioneer thinkers.

I worked with Studio X from the beginning and to the end of the project, which gave me a great, detailed insight of an architectural process from sketching to realization. The space had an opening event in November 2013. We transformed first three levels of an existing building into a raw, open construction with smooth transitions to other levels, giving the place spacial and visual openness to inhabit different events. My work included processual sketching, drafting and modelling the major part of the interior design, such as kitchen, lounge area and the lavatory. Besides choosing fixtures, finding solutions for smaller constructional details, designing integrated furniture, choosing materials, furnishment and designing the lighting system, I was also responsible for coordinating meetings with contractors and controlling the site during the construction process. Furthermore, I had the responsibility for the accountant work, to keep and regulate the budget while selecting fixtures for the project. the demolition phase, borusan building, findikli, istanbul
