SYMBIOTIC ARCHITECTURE STUDENT HOUSING AS AN INTERACTION CATALYST BETWEEN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND KAMPUNG COMMUNITY AROUND CAMPUS

YEAR: 2020 LOCATION: SUKOLILO, SURABAYA TYPE: ACADEMIC PROJECT GPA: 4.00/4.00 ADVISOR: RABBANI KHARISMAWAN, S.T., M.T.

The coexistence between students and the kampung community has provided the interaction between the two. Over time, the quality of this interaction decreases, partly due to the physical conditions of the environment that do not support interaction. The student residence then becomes an object that is expected to be a synthesis of this problem, namely by being a catalyst for student and kampung community interaction. Symbiotic architecture is the main approach to integrate student housing and community housing, with the existence of the intermediate space concept. With typological and behavioral mapping methods, this object tries to create a new mindset of how student housing in the kampung area around the campus should be designed to produce an ideal coexisting living condition.

SITE DESCRIPTION. As a kampung area around the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) campus, the Gebang Putih kampung community has received tremendous impacts from the existence of the campus. The economic activities of the community also depend a lot on the ITS students, namely with the existence of businesses related to student necessity, such as boarding houses, laundry, restaurants, printing and photocopying, and many more.

ISSUE. Study shows that the percentage of university students living in the kampung reaches 51% of the total population of the village (Mulyana and Winarso, 2016), but the interaction quality between university student and kampung community keeps decreasing. The social relations that occurred between university students and society beforehand were based on propinquity, but at this time it tends to be only based on economical reason (Sanityastuti, 2002). The interaction between students and the kampung community then often interpreted as limited to community service through routine programs, for example by the concept of kampung binaan, KKN, and other routine activities. As a result, there is no good synergy between the two parties, so that the benefits that should be felt from this coexistence are not realized.

Based on a survey conducted by the author to 25 samples of students who live in student residences in the kampung area around the campus of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, the following data were obtained:

According to Gillin and Gillin in Soekanto (2007), the conditions for social interaction are social contact and communication. Referring to this, the design problem raised is how architecture can become a new synthesis by catalyzing interactions. The design objective is to intervene in space to increase the possibility of social contact and communication between university students and the kampung community and improve the quality of the interactions intermediate spaces

that occur. The solution proposed is to integrate the student housings in and with the kampung area, by juxtaposing the everyday activity of the university students and

SH SH

kampung community.

SH SYMBIOTIC ARCHITECTURE. In the process of integration, the principle of symbiotic architecture (Kurokawa, 1987) is applied by creating Intermediate Space; Allowance for vagueness, no differentiation, no uniformity, just mutual coexistence. (Kurokawa, 1991).

BEHAVIORAL ARCHITECTURE. To ensure that the results of the integration of these programs achieve the design objectives, the behavioral architecture approach is used as the basis, namely by behavioral mapping (person-centered mapping & place-centered mapping), and applying the behavior setting theory (Baker, 1968; Lang 1987)

Integration among student housings and between student housings and kampung in everyday life.

The hot climate of Surabaya could not be felt while exploring the pedestrian way in front of Plaza Surabaya. There was no clear floor texture differences between Plaza Surabaya and the pedestrian way, the only clue was the traffic noise. There are no barriers surrounding the trees on the pedestrian way which could lead to possible danger for visuallyimpaired users. Curb and bollards can be detected by cane to help blind pedestrians navigate. However, the existence of railings and tactile pavings could be a huge help.

B Ÿ

Ÿ

There are no audio or physical clue that the pedestrian way leads to the bridge which could lead to confusion. The railings were not continuous due to the existence of columns.

Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ

No entrance signage of the park. The mental image of "park" to the participant could not be applied to Taman Bungkul due to the absence of clues such as flower scents or the shady and calming vibe of the park. The route to the public toilet were too complicated due to many curvy and mazelike shapes. The sound of the water fountain is a good clue for the amphitheater area. The bench surrounding the amphitheater is too low which leads to confusion.

PRACE CO-WORKING SPACE: EMBODYING PERSONAL SPACES AMONG PUBLIC SPACE

YEAR: 2018 LOCATION: MULYOSARI, SURABAYA TYPE: ACADEMIC PROJECT GPA: 3.50/4.00 ADVISOR: ANGGER SUKMA MAHENDRA., S.T., M.T.

Surabaya is one of the cities in Indonesia that has numerous amount of universities. There are 6 state universities, 22 private universities, and 25 academies and polytechnics in Surabaya. With that condition, some requirements come up, one of them is the lack of working space for college students in Surabaya. This project’s goal is to provide a working space for college students in Surabaya, that accommodate both material work (cutting, painting, making models, etc.) and non-material work. The issue is to create personal spaces inside a public space that also functions commercially.

This project is started by questioning the definition of personal space. To Edward Hall personal space is the space within intimate distance and personal distance. Then what is personal space to the user? Is an empty space considered personal? Or is a quiet place personal? The answer to this question was to make the s p a c e s fl ex i b l e e n o u g h f o r t h e u s e r s t o personalize, by providing affordances. This is supported by the zoning that separates the public zone and personal zone, considering all the requirements including visual barrier, noise barrier, and circulation.

To accommodate productive activities maximally, affordances are provided to support various types of activities and user preferences (Either material or non-material working, groups or solitary activity, different learning/working habit, etc.)

The formal exploration started by mapping several universities near the site, and draw a line from those universities to the site. The lines are then transformed into masses, then through iteration process combined into the final building form.

WANGON KUMBOLO HIKING SHELTER AROUND RANU KUMBOLO, MOUNT SEMERU

YEAR: 2018 LOCATION: RANU KUMBOLO, KAB. LUMA JANG TYPE: COMPETITION ENTRY LOMBA DESAIN SHELTER PESONA INDONESIA 2018 PARTNERS: ORPHIN GUNAWAN, DATIN INTAN B.

Hiking is not merely about satisfaction when reaching the mountain top. A long time ago, hiking was considered a sacred journey between humans and gods. Today, hiking is considered as an emotional journey that often aims to seek clarity of mind, find meaning in life, and get closer and more connected to the universe. Ranu Kumbolo is a freshwater lake located at Mount Semeru, which is a favorite spot for hikers. It is known for its marvelous view at all times. Ranu Kumbolo is also geographically strategic to be the rest area for the hikers, either to stop by or spend the night. W i t h t h e b e a u t i f u l p a n o ra m a s a n d m i n i m a l intervention from the outside world, Ranu Kumbolo is a strategic place to contemplate for hikers who are looking for the meaning of their journey.

VISUAL In the staying area, differences in elevation are intended to broaden visual access to other people inside the room. This concept provides visual duality, so people outside can have visual access to the shelter, and people inside can have visual access to other occupants, and the outside world.

The building is designed to maximize the utilization of passive energy. This is applied by giving cross ventilation to maximize the air movement and aperture in the roof to let the natural light enters the room.

This project is a proposed design for the renovation of TMR, which consists of a zoo, animal conservation, and recreational facilities. The proposed concept is to restore the area to the original habitat of the animals to promote animal welfare, biosecurity, and biosafety, by being not visitor-oriented and put the animals inside cages, but rather animal occupant-oriented. The design aimed to treat the animal as the main occupant, while the visitors (human) are given the experience of "peeping" into their habitat.
