5 Projects. is a compilation of selected work over the course of professional work and education at the University of Western Australia and the National University of Singapore.

5 Projects. form a personal position towards architecture. One that stems from type & typology, abstracted through form & figure, and construed through tectonics and materiality. Each project is an attempt to react to contemporary issues of the city and hinterland in thoughtful ways. Representation of these projects are deployed through the act of drawing, physical models and image making.

Building for Co-Working Masterplan with a Forest Theater in Balestier Market for Semarang Workshop for China & Sri Lanka

01 A Building for Co-Working

The building is a concrete shell, punctured through structural ciruclation cores. As the digital begins to pervade through the 21st century, access to goods becomes fluid, to the point that existing modes of get disrupted. The advent of sharing platforms also provide private sectors with unprecedented market mechanics, enabling the seamless commodification of life. Indeed, these are the hallmarks of the shared economy. If the building is meant to house participants of this new shared economy, how can it charge the workings of this new phenomena? The building’s objectives are twofold. The first, is the mediation between old and new or local and global whilst responding to the immediacy that the flanking rail corridor presents. The second, is to act as a urban condenser responding to the demands of an increasingly relevant shared economy. To meet these objectives, a series of four strategies is suggested: creation of public space, functional flexibility and strategic circulation.

02 A Masterplan for a Forest

The masterplan offers ways of negotiating between city and hinterland through formal operations. As strategy, a series of phased reactions to the surrounding urban environment was developed. This provides a framework for collaging intentions on site. As requisite, the collection begins with a series of block typologies that are suitable for the tropical context. Relationships between the forest and city is formulated through the most banal series of arrangements that lead to a complex composition. The masterplan is a sum of parts informed by a collection of typologies that is stitched by linear zones into a cohesive whole. As a sum of its parts it offers a multitude experiences, yet in the background is the recurring 50:50 dialectic between forest & city. The notion of the forest city as mere merging of the forest with the city should be reconsidered. Both take space, more often than not, at the expense of each other. How can these seemingly polar opposites come together? The districts are a linear progression of clusters that progress from the existing industrial area towards West Coast Park. The Gardens act as a productivity buffer and site of economy. Parks and Recreation allow for activities within the green areas. The Forests of contemplation offer an immersive spectacle into the forest.

03 A Theater for Balestier

A theater for Balestier is an addition of strategic circulation pathways and a figural concrete shell. 8 Jalan Ampas as a Place of Contemporary Cultural Production. Counter position to the Cathay along orchard road, consumption of cultural production and the history of cultural production. This location has the potential to be a productive space that is an actual machine for the production of contemporary culture bringing the building into a new phase, in an attempt to chart a narrative that looks to its past for its future. The Film Production compound is an anomaly within its surrounding context of mid tier condominiums, a temple, a nursing home, and some conserved shophouses. Yet, it is also an anomaly because its sealed off, abandoned and left for dead. Herein lies the latent potential to transform the compound in to a found productive space.

04 A Market for Semarang

The architecture is a thickened roof that consolidates civic functions. A paradoxical figure emerges, one that is composed of the heavy volume of the administrative floorplate and the fragmented roof form, reminiscent of the grain of surrounding context. The roof aggregates in hopes of appearing as a friendly neighbour, borrowing grain and geometric values of the urban block. Insidiously, the open space serves as a means to the agenda of the market police to secretly keep market vendors in check. The single volumnious floorplate consolidates the governmental power facilitating the continuous underside. In elevation, the singular inhabitable roof is picture hovering above the open space. A towering minaret pierces through the layers of sneakiness - the only uncontested space. Irregardless of status, they are all forced to come together to pray 5 times a day to reprent for their sins for being so sneaky.

05 A Workshop for China and Sri Lanka

The workshop is a big roof consolidating smaller fragmented urban rooms. The architectural thesis is about the modes and methods of architectural production in a climate that is both tropical and increasingly neo-liberal. The consequence of this inquiry, is to understand the ways in which architecture should be produced. Is there room to infiltrate a kind of prima materia consensus that has long preceded the developmentalist approach toward architecture in the tropics? More importantly perhaps, it looks to set up and formulate an understanding of practising architecture in the contemporary context of the modernist metropole within the framework of the market economy. The project is demonstrated through a building which serves as a workshop for collaboration between Chinese construction workers and Sri Lankan craftsmen & labourers. The metaphor for fruitful exchange does not remain at the level of the building’s function but is reflective in its construction process, down to the level of how two materials meet.
