More investors are keen to achieve net-zero and other sustainability measures when looking at their options, and this is something the UK Government is keen to encourage. With a 2050 target to achieve net-zero carbon, the UK Government released a ten-point plan in November 2020 and pledged billions of pounds to create and support a quarter of a million green jobs. Many of the UK Government’s plans impact real estate and include:
OFFSHORE POWER The plan is to quadruple offshore wind power production to 40 gigawatts (GW) and generate 5 gigawatts of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. By 2023, the UK Government hopes to trial a Hydrogen Neighbourhood where hydrogen is used for heating and cooking.
Green Homes Grant The Green Homes Grant was extended to March 2022, effectively providing more time for residential and public buildings to achieve energy efficiency. The use of heat pumps is vital to this goal, as the UK Government hopes to ban gas boilers in new build properties.
