What Is ACM Cladding? Zuneth Sattar
In light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, in March 2020 the UK Government announced that it would provide £1 billion in 2020-2021 to support the removal and remediation of any cladding systems deemed to be unsafe.
The money will fund the remediation of non-ACM cladding systems on private and social housing buildings that are 18 metres and over.
ACM Cladding Aluminium composite material cladding has been used on buildings throughout the UK, typically as part of a double-wall construction that acts as a rainscreen for the building while also offering thermal insulation, structural stability and airtightness. ACM cladding consists of two layers of aluminium, which are bonded to a lightweight core such as polyethylene or polyurethane.
Grenfell Tower The fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 – a tragic and deadly event – is thought to have been made worse thanks to the ACM cladding that was present on the building. The ACM cladding had a polyethylene core, causing the fire to spread rapidly up the outside of the tower building.
