POP-UP ARCHITECTURE DENEUS ANTIEN, CAROLIN ZEREBENCO
WHAT IS POP-UP ARCHITECTURE?
Of course, architecture has found ways to express itself through the pop-up too. Its temporary nature is a central part of the pop-up’s appeal, meaning this type of architecture can often be just that little bit braver than that of buildings that are designed to be around for a long time. Examples of pop-ups range from very functional buildings to those that are designed to provoke, amaze and astonish. As you might expect, there are lots of pop-ups in London. The most famous example, of course, is the Serpentine Gallery, which, perhaps unconsciously leading the way for the pop-up movement, has been commissioning a temporary summer pavilion by a leading architect since the year 2000.

BEYBEYBALLON 6
BEYBEYBALLON SAMUEL BETHOMEAU This year’s winner, Julie Biron, an independent architect working in Berlin, presented an installation that explores the definition of space with a series of circular plates supported by a splender flexible metal wire anchored into upside-down concrete filled flower pots. Upon first view the disks fill the courtyard as a solid mass, but as the user moves through it the round planes bend and move out of the way, constantly redefining space. Samuel Berthomeau and Lucie Mothes created ByeByeBallon, which aims at bringing together visitors around the same project. The silver balloons that float above the bases invite visitors to play around and intervene. It is a witty commentary that in essence allows visitors to influence the structure of the project through their presence and interaction with it.

SCAPE NAS Created by the three man team NAS architecture, the plan begins from the ground unfolding in a multitude of random steps that can be used for many purposes. made entirely of wood, the pavilion works its way around columns and other on-site elements, and contrasts heavily with the bright white interior. inside, visitors can find a couple chairs, along with a map and other materials related to the festival and events. ‘scape’ is constructed entirely of wood, painted in both matte black and white. within the larger, beige courtyard, the structure creates a unique point of comparison and strength, bolstering the location’s majesty.

REFRAME 10
REFRAME ADAM SCALES, PIERRE BERHELOMEAU AND PAUL VAN DEN BERG interpreted the them of surprise as a way of exploring the visitor’s relationship to space. In doing so, they created Reframe which invites visitors to move across the cube while moving a series of ongoing changes whilst visual experiences unravel. According to the architects, each different spot around the cube animates and activates the existing surrounding architecture as the visitor moves around the project. Javier Pena Ibanez and Cristina Sanchez Algarra of Tri-Oh!. created a series of boxes named Cité Surprise, Cité Surprenante which introduce visitors to all of Montpelier’s secret and forgotten places. Viewers become the protagonists as they are able to hide inside the cubes, which are transformed into kaleidoscopes that whisk them away to all the secret city spots.
