GoldCoast, A Ply Design. We look at plywood a lot. It’s a primary ingredient of our products, as well as a brilliantly designed material. Two directions of veneers are pressed together to create something that is stronger than if they were all going one way. That idea permeates our whole mentality. The things we make combine the clean and considered elements of modern design with the emotional expression of art and photography. At it’s heart, skateboarding is the same way; technical yet improvisational and when done properly, looks effortless. Welcome to the Spring 2013 Collection from GoldCoast.

DENIS CARRIER studiofolk.com
My name is Denis Carrier, I’m illustrator and art director. I live at the feet of French Alps where I have grew up. I have glasses, beard and often a cap at the top of the head.
Did you have an inclination to be an artist early on or did you study art first?
When I was young, I don’t remember to make a lot of artistic things. I spent my time playing outdoor with other children. I began to draw later, around 17 year old. After the College, I began a graphic design school and since, and I have never stop to learn and draw.
What influenced you growing up, any particular places, or people?
I have the chance to grow up in a little town where I was often outside. I have made treehouses and lot of things like that. It was really cool and I think this memory of freedom feeling is really important in my life and my work today. Then, during my studies, I discovered lot of artists who influenced me like Keith Haring, Raymond Savignac, Robert Crumb, Hubert Selby jr, Jacques Tati…
Was skateboarding part of your childhood?
I began to skate after buying a vhs-best-of of 411. I don’t remember exactly when but around 14 or 15 years old. Since this moment, I have never stop to skate. I have immediately found the same feeling of freedom I was talking before. When I ride, I don’t search to be technic, the more often I just like to be on my board and go at work and sometime skate a little park.
Typography is a major part of your work, but I think there’s more to your work then just making words more visual. Are there any writers that influence you?
I’m not sure that writers have influenced my “word draws”. I think the words came in my work because of my draw begin with an idea. I often try to say something, I like giving a shape at a pun. And at the beginning, they were only draws. That’s only in a second time that I have really realized that each letters can be my draw support and I decided to play with them, with their senses, their shapes… And now it’s a important part of my graphic research.
How would you describe your work?
I try to make simple and accessible works which sometime can make laugh or reflect. Like on a skateboard, I’m not technic. I like finding the good and simple shape which can say a lot of things.
Do you listen to music when you work? If so what?
Of course, I can’t work without music. I like a lot of things and in the same day I will twist from Miles Davis to Best Coast via Herman Dune, Woody Guthrie, The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes or Gil Scott-Heron.
What do you see yourself working on 10 years from now?
I really don’t know, I think I will always draw but maybe that will be less the center of my professional life than now. I like the graphic novel “It’s a Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken” by Seth, which explain how much things can change.
What else do you feel plays a big part of your life?
This feeling is the most important on my life. If I have decided to be freelance, that’s precisely for that. I want to be free and play with new friends, new clients, like a child.
Where is the first place you skate to, once your GoldCoast board is finished?
I think I will receive it at work so my first ride will be for coming back at home for dinner ;-)

DAVID TROYER troyerimages.com
My Name is David Allen Troyer and I am 23 no make that 43 (I constantly confuse those) and I live in Oceanside and grew up in Carlsbad. I live with My wife Jami and our two groms...Sadie 3 and Lucas 9mo. Oh yeah and our freak of a dog Gus 9. What influenced you growing up, any particular places, or people?
Growing up in Carlsbad in the 70’s and 80s’ was great. It was still as very small community and everyone knew each other...A lot of community support. But most of my influences were from right at home with my family. We are very close and spent most of the time at the beach. My parents are extremely hard working people and that where I got my work ethic from, if it wasn’t for them I would most likely still be hanging out at Tamarack or State Beach!
Was skateboarding part of your childhood?
Yes Skateboarding was a huge part of my life when I was young. When I was 6 or 7 our neighbor Nick Wesenberg an older kid needed a ride to the skate park and my Mom was the only one around with a car. He told her that he would teach me how to skate if she would give us a lift to the skate park. Luckily for me Mom said yes and got me my first board. It was a Sims Pure Juice with Bennet Pro trucks and green Kryptonic wheels!!! Carlsbad Sparks Skate Park was a far out and crazy place for me at that age. All these cool big kids were drawing lines in the big bowl and I wanted in. It took me a while but I paid my dues in the kiddie bowl and got there! Skateboarding was pretty much a stepping stone to Surfing for me! Once I got my first Surfboard it was all over...I wanted nothing to do with anything that wasn’t SURFING!
Was there a particular moment that you realized that you wanted to be a photographer?
When I was 8 I was given a subscription to Surfer Magazine. I remember opening it up to a spread of Shaun Thompson at J-Bay. First thing I said was I will go there one day and then I said I want to be a surf photographer,I remember it clear as day! It took a long time and a after a bunch of bad life choices and trying to figure shit out I actually got to J-Bay. Oh yeah and also became a surf photographer!
You’ve been able to travel around the world for work, I know its probably hard to narrow down but what are the places you recommend to your friends to go visit.
I have been asked this question so many times over the years and my answer changes from time to time depending on who is asking. But to be honest Indonesia holds a very special place in my heart. First off the surf is amazing but I think its the people that has really made it special over the years. However there is one place that is a bit of an anomaly and I always tell people to go there if they can and that place is the island nation of Mauritius. Its a tropical island off the east coast of Madagascar...Look it up,read about it and GO THERE!!!
What cameras do you usually shoot with?
I have shot with pretty much every type of camera known to mankind but my hands down all time favorite camera is my Mamiya 7 rangefinder. Its a 6x7 medium format film camera and produces the most stunning images. I LOVE FILM!!!
Any camera that you would recommend to someone just getting into photography?
I want people to know that the camera DOES NOT MAKE the picture! You do! So shoot with what ever you have or can afford. If you have the passion it will show. Some of my best images came out of a $35 plastic point and shoot film camera. But if you can afford a Mamiya 7 GET ONE!
The perfect soundtrack to your day to day?
80’s Alt rock whatever that means...I have been listening to a lot of “Joy Division” lately. Oh yeah and the Melvins. But right now “the Hoo Doo Gurus “ is playing in the background...go figure.
What do you see yourself working on 10 years from now?
10 years from now I want to have a successful Photography business of my own, Maybe a studio but mostly lifestyle images. I love shooting people who want to be shot! And I will always be shooting Surf from the water as long as I can still swim.
What else do you feel plays a big part of your life?
Hands down the biggest part of my life is my family! Everything else including my art pales in comparison to my wife and kids!
