Matix Spring 15 is about gaining a new perspective on familiar sights. It’s about discovering something new in old places. We’ve all seen a cactus before, not really all that uncommon, but after taking a breather you stumble upon the neon flowers springtime blooms. Pretty bitchin’, mother nature is. Spring is the season to enjoy secondhand exposures. So get to those places, mellow out and take a gaze at a site unseen. You might be surprised or maybe I’m just full of shit. Either way, get out there...

repair / rebuild / reuse All Matix denim comes with a “lifetime” guarantee. The guarantee covers specifically manufacturing defects in regards to buttons, rivets, zippers, belt loops or seams (each a “defect”). We will repair or replace your defective jeans with a new pair (or similar pair, in the event such style has been discontinued), as provided below. Our products are covered under warranty, to the original owner (with authentic proof of purchase), for the lifetime of the product. Unfortunately, this does not mean your lifetime. Your favorite Gripper denim pants may not survive to the ripe old age of 70. (But we have heard from folks whose well-loved & cared for 1998 Styro denim pants are still going strong!)

Spring is about bringing new meaning to old stuff. So, in this manner we gathered up some ol’ patches we had laying around between all of our junk, the Badges print was born! The Badges print is all about America’s rich history in bullshitting. Refer to goofy 60s & 70s humor at about 98 degrees. We might be clashing but isn’t that the point anyway! Salud!

Initially, it was the strange culture and the pride that skaters took in being a part of that culture that attracted me to it. There were 5 or 6 skaters in my school and they were down as hell for skateboarding and for the whole scene. I mean, we were total outcasts in North Carolina in 1990. But those dudes didn’t even care, at all, about being captain of the football team or the most popular kid in school. The skaters were in this secret club and no one was allowed in unless they brought it to the table. You had to prove yourself. I liked that about skateboarding. I liked the confidence these guys had in what they were a part of. It really was a gang to some extent. Those dudes were gnarly on a whole other level.

I have a few moments that I can remember where I really knew that I had some connection to skateboarding. Some kind of weird ‘knowing’ that this is something that I can do naturally. I learned tricks relatively quickly back then, and I was always thinking of new stuff or trying the tricks I saw in videos and landing some of them. For a kid who’s only been skating for two years, being able to do some technical tricks from videos was a huge thing for me. I used to take this mellow hill bomb from the top of this main road all the way to my house and the challenge was to make it the whole way without missing a trick. I could occasionally do the whole downhill and land all the tricks I tried, and I had this feeling that I was finally good at something in my life. That was the connection. I somehow spoke this language and could just skateboard. I remember getting to my front yard one day, and I just knew that skateboarding was what I wanted to do with my life. My mom lost her job when I was in the 9th grade, freshman in high school, and she couldn’t afford to have us live with her anymore so we

School was easy for me to an extent, but I got bored a lot and kinda blew it. I used to do my homework in class so I wouldn’t have to carry books home, and have more time to skate. I blew off a couple of term papers because I just wasn’t interested in any of the subject material at the time. That’s what made me slip in the 11th grade, boredom. Then I emancipated myself from my mother and went to home school and started doing better again. I skipped senior year and went straight to college taking art classes and math classes and fiction analysis and short story writing classes. That was fun because you could wear pajamas to school and no one gave a shit. People just wanted an education. All the high-school garbage didn’t matter anymore. I liked writing and drawing. The Back Forty is a project-based media endeavor that also makes t-shirts. We work on various projects with other companies and people inside & outside of skateboarding, and we make t-shirts and videos to support those projects. A lot of what we are doing involves charitable types of projects. We haven’t really advertised that we’re doing charity work, but that’s what it really is. I can only speak for myself, but one thing I would personally like to do is organize a program that gives back to struggling teens and where various self-made speakers speak with teens about making their lives extraordinary. Sort of like motivational speaking, but not geared toward how to get rich quick or any of that stuff. Just motivating teens through personal stories about people who just went and made it happen in their lives through hard work and a certain kind of interaction with others. Not sure if that makes much sense, but basically the teens of today are tomorrow’s potential leaders. A little motivation, guidance, and support always helps. Kenny has his sights set on lighting up villages in South America with solar technology. Doing video projects with companies like that, and making tees to support those efforts was the starting point for The Back Forty.

Figure out where the crew plans to ride dirt in the afternoon. Grab a burrito and knock out a dirt session until dark then head to my shop for a few hrs.

The only cars I have sold were to buy another car. Im currently building a Ford Model A for Carey Hart. Carey will be hands on designing and finishing the car. A r e yo u b u i l d i n g c a r s fo r f r i e n ds , c u s to m e r s , p e r s o n a l co l l e c t i o n ?

W h o d o yo u h a n g w it h ? It changes through the year with BMX guys heading to visit our place in So Cal for the winters and traveling more during the summer. Carey Hart and Big B have been close friends for a long time. When I’m home I hang out with a bunch of buddies who build cars too. W h at i s yo u r t y p i c a l day l i k e ? Wake up between five & six. Post up at my desk for a few hours doing my team managers duties. Usually run around gathering car parts. or picking up parts from paint.

I’m also building a 59 Chevy pick up for my father right now. Other then that Im justing building cars for my self for now. W h at i s yo u r m a i n v e h i c l e o f t r a n s p o r tati o n ? Chevy Van. Vans are awesome. It’s full of parts or bikes daily. H ow lo n g h av e b e e n g e t t i n g r a d o n yo u r b m x b i k e ? I started riding my bike to school when I was a kid. Thats all she wrote. Started racing, then dirt comps shortly after. Its been my job since graduating high school.

W h o i s yo u r to p 3 i n f lu e n c e r s i n b m x ? Brian Foster, Fuzzy Hall, Brian Blyther…theres some younger guys that have been huge influences as well. Dennis Enarson, Mike Aitken, Taj, Joe Rich…Its hard, I have found many influences in many riders over the years. W h y d o n ’ t yo u r ac e b m x ? I did…but dirt jumping and skate parks are way more fun and you don’t have to train. Haha So I know you used to be a big snow surfer, What’s your most memomer able experience while living w/ Shaun Palmer? Oh man, theres so many. It was a blast living with Palm at that time in Tahoe. The most memorable would be heading to Tahoe for Boarding for Breast Cancer. It was my first trip to Tahoe. We rolled into a house party with the Beastie Boys where they played a set of their old stuff, snowboarded, and ripped around in old Cadillacs. It was a game changer for me, I moved to Palmer’s place shortly after. I f yo u w e r e o n a w e e k pa i d vac ati o n o n a s e c lUd e d i s l a n d a n d co u l d b r i n g 1 0 p e o p l e w h o wo u l d t h e y b e ? I would have to bring my wife, Jack Nicholson, Neil Young, Will Ferrell, The Rolling Stones & a cook… This way none of my friends would be let down. W h y d i d n ’ t yo u p i c k As ta p h e n ? (HAHA) Because he would not go unless there was a fancy resort. Anyone you want to give a shout out to? Hell yeah! Shaun Palmer...

If we weren’t doing that, we were jamming punk rock songs in my garage. My first board was a Toy Machine when I was 12, and I probably watched Fulfill the Dream and Jump off a Building a hundred times. Once I got to high school, I was introduced to Punk Rock (NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Leftover Crack, Descendants, The Vandals) and it was on.

h ow d i d yo u e n d u p p l ay i n g a b a n j o? Funny story, I was maybe drunk after a Dropkick Murphy’s show at the Palladium and decided I wanted to learn either banjo or bagpipes. Turned out I picked banjo because bagpipes are insanely loud and I’m positive my neighbors (and family…and friends) would kill me. So I got my first banjo, but didn’t realize there’s a 4-string (played like a guitar for Irish/ Celtic/Jazz styles) and a 5-string (played for finger picking bluegrass). Turns out I got a 5-string banjo and figured, “Well, guess I’m learning bluegrass.”

We’ve been lucky enough to play MusInk with Lucero, Hootenanny (2013) with Social D and Murder by Death, and those were great festivals. This year we played NAMM (2014) on the GoPro main stage and that was crazy, but my favorite is busking in Laguna Beach. That’s where we started, playing for passerby, making the kids dance, seeing stoked families stop and listen. Plus we don’t have to worry about set times. What music are you listening to these days?

When I was in elementary school, I played violin and clarinet, but I realized I sucked really bad so I dropped out. Once I got into high school and discovered punk rock my freshman year; I decided to learn guitar. By then my mom had given up on buying instruments so I had to make a deal with her – mowing the lawn 100 times – to get my first Fender Squire. I hadn’t included an amp in the deal, but I was still stoked. I’d practice for six hours a day, just fooling around and figuring it out. Skateboarding got me to meet a bunch of other skater kids who played instruments and that’s when we started jamming in the garage. We formed a band called Antagen, toured a bit with Guttermouth, Strung Out, Pour Habit and a few others. NOFX, Bad Religion, Rancid, Op Ivy, Youth Brigade, The Unseen, Bouncing Souls, FEAR, Misfits, and a lot more, but those bands were always in the rotation. Punk Rock is fast and full of energy which has definitely influenced how I attack the banjo. Banjo can have energy! I always joke that folk/Americana/bluegrass is just acoustic punk.

I’m an endorsed artist for the Deering Banjo Co. in Spring Valley, CA. They’re an all-American made banjo company owned and operated by the Deering family. We’re a five piece string band formed in April 2012. At the beginning I only knew Max (mandolin, violin) because we’d grown up and lived together. Max is a barber at Golden Crown in Laguna Niguel, and knew Scotty (accordion), also a barber, at King’s Club in Dana Point. Scotty was cutting Vinnie’s hair one day when Vinnie showed him a four song demo he’d recorded. Scotty immediately knew he wanted to put something together so he called Miguel (upright bass). Vinnie was working at a pub next door to Max’s barbershop when he stopped in and saw a banjo on the wall. Max hadn’t played in years, but said I was learning and in. Vinnie played “Desperate Man” and Max texted me immediately saying, “Pham, you’re playing banjo. Trust me.” I had literally been playing for four months and could barely roll, but I was in the band. After our first practice, we all clicked. One of the hardest things for any band is chemistry, but with the Hooligans, it’s been the easiest thing in the world.

Devil Makes Three, Old Crow Medicine Show, Hank 3, Brown Bird, Avett Brothers, St. Vincent, Cary Ann Hearst from Shovels & Rope… I’m always listening to different music.
