I
RIDER | Julien Lange
couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I was copy and pasting the same old crap in the catalogue year after year. I get too stoked tinkering with new materials and dreaming-up bat-shit-crazy ideas to settle with the status quo. The buzz I get from impressing a team rider with a new prototype or a glowing testimonial from an Amplid customer is all the inspiration I need to justify the weeks of concepting, research, lab time and on-mountain testing that goes into every Amplid ski. I’m fortunate enough to have a team around me at Amplid with the same motivations. Innovation is my passion and it’s Amplid’s lifeblood, without it, there is no Amplid. Brands talk about “purpose” all the time, I firmly believe that the better the skis are beneath your feet, the more awesome your day in the mountains will be. Making the best skis you’ve ever owned and elevating your riding to the next level is Amplid’s purpose and my mission!

THE PLAYER SERIES W
PHOTOGRAPHER | Rich Ewbank
RIDER | Alex Neurohr
atching team riders Alex Neurohr and Julien Lange ripping the entire mountain like characters in a video game inspired us to dedicate a quiver of skis to freeskiers bringing the heat to the backcountry. Balancing the confident feel of freeride hardware with the playfulness of your favorite freestyle sticks, the Player Series blurs the divide between the snow park and the infinite terrain beyond the boundary ropes. Three underfoot widths with differentiated camber-lines and unique geometries make finding the perfect ski straightforward. Common DNA running through the collection means all three skis share a familiar feel; switching from one ski to another takes minimal adjustment. Designed and manufactured in the Alps, this striking threesome is reserved for the true players.

At 102mm underfoot, the Superplayer is the skinniest member of Amplid’s Player Series, delivering the perfect 50/50 compromise between on and off piste performance. Inspired by the geometry of the infamous Multiplayer, but with shorter tips, more effective edge and a narrower waist, the Superplayer compromises a little deep snow floatation for gains in grip and responsiveness. Its lengthened underfoot camber-zone and trimmed-back early-rise create the perfect platform for carving turns and launching airs from. Like all Player Series skis, the Superplayer is supercharged with Targeted Composite Application: A full length, base-side Carbon Pop Band and Basalt Suspension Strips, located in the tips with a V-arrangement, add snap and soothe vibrations.

Like Streetfighter 2 and Mario Kart, this Multiplayer gets better with age. Although not overly fat, its 108mm waist and volume-packed outline mean the Multiplayer has zero problem staying on top. Time-proven triaxial fiberglass and Omni core construction give the Multiplayer the right blend of performance, stability and forgiveness for progressive skiing. Additional Carbon reinforcement from tip-to-tail and targeted strips of Basalt finetune the flex pattern and add damping where it’s needed.
Mountain-minded Freeskiers in need of a do-everything shred just hit the jackpot.
The Multiplayer has a directional Camrock profile: A good dose of nose rocker is blended with a set-back camber, its apex beneath the heel of the boot. The result is an easy floating ski with reliable tail hold in turns and an unprecedented ability to stick backseat landings. Its perfected geometry meets the needs of freeskiers taking their skills to the backcountry.

A team favourite for Earth’s snow-blessed meccas, the 119mm wide Megaplayer is flowing and floaty beyond comprehension, and glides like a hovercraft across the deepest snowpack. From Utah’s weightless moon dust to British Columbia coastal cement, where there’s pow the Megaplayer is home. Its perfected outline shape and smooth, kink-less blend of tip rocker and underfoot camber create graceful lift and add easy handling. In fact, the Megaplayer is so agile and playful that spreading butters and catching air from snow-blanketed features becomes second-nature. Almost a decade old, but the Rockwell continues to perplex and delight skiers of all abilities. Key to its undisputable popularity is the Rockwell’s unique Jekyll & Hyde Geometry, which combines a tight and playful sidecut radius with a versatile 95mm waist and plenty of lift-generating surface area. A true Swiss Knife, the Rockwell adapts to any skiing style, terrain choice or snow condition. Perfectly matched to its eccentric shape is a Camrock profile which blends underfoot camber with just the right amount of tip and tail rocker. Long and tight carves, speed-scrubbing smears and effortless butters, the Rockwell is a playful and easily controlled toy for the entire mountain. Successive upgrades over the last couple of years, including a lightning fast Sintered 7 base and snappy Carbon Pop Bands, make the Rockwell a true bang-for-buck bargain! The Time Traveller captures the spirit of the Centrifugal Collection, in a more intuitive and less demanding ski design. Amplid’s design team borrowed the same thrilling geometry as its ferocious sibling, the Time Machine 83, and paired it with a less stubborn construction. The outcome is a light and reactive alternative that revels in resort runs and adapts instinctively to its pilot’s pace. Shallow camber and a pinch of early-rise in the tips help the Time Traveller to skip and rip effortlessly across the frontside in broad mix of snow conditions. A confidence-inspiring resort ski for aspiring freeriders and hungover veterans in need of an exhilarating ski that rewards good technique, but doesn’t punish little mistakes. ocated in downtown Munich, Black Sheep Sports is a freeride ski store dedicated to bringing the hardgoods of smaller, more innovative ski brands to Bavaria’s freeride skiers. Founded in 2010 out of a passion for skiing and freeriding in particular, Black Sheep Sports prides itself on its huge selection of “hard to find” skis, stocking 120 different freeride skis every winter. At a time when many ski shops are closing their doors, Black Sheep’s approach of supporting some of the region’s best athletes, regular demos in the neighbouring Alps and a hunger to stock the latest and greatest products, keeps the customers walking through the store’s doors… in increasing numbers. Amplid’s Peter Bauer caught 10 minutes with Black Sheep Sports´ founder and owner Basti Steinbach, between boot fittings and ski consultations, to talk about why Amplid’s Centrifugal Collection skis are important feature on Black Sheep’s fabled “Ski Wall”.

BLACK SHEEP SPORTS
INTERVIEW WITH BASTI STEINBACH
PB: You’re running demo events at Hintertux all winter which gives you some unique insight. Describe the typical Black Sheep customer that loves these skis? BS: Our customers typically own a couple of pairs of skis. The last few winters weren’t great for snow and that showed us that it’s a good idea to own slope skis that can really charge, but is still fun in the tracked-out off-piste sections that you find during the pre-season. Our customers want a ski that can rip hard pack and bumps, and race on the slopes. They love these toys! PB: The skis are quite demanding in terms of experience and technique. What do they gain by being a little bit more exclusive? PB: It seems freeriders are rediscovering the joy of piste-orientated skis. What do you think is behind the increasing popularity of narrower piste skis? BS: The return of the turn. An important part of skiing, also for freeskiers and freeriders, is skiing the slopes. It’s just a lot of fun chasing your friends around the mountain on narrow skis. PB: What attracted Black Sheep Sports to Amplid’s Centrifugal Collection? BS: For us it’s not only the local factor. Skis like the Centrifugal Collection really help us to introduce a cool, high-quality brand to a wider range of consumers. PB: What ski characteristics excite you most about the skis in the collection? BS: They are so quick from edgeto-edge and ski like race skis, but are way more versatile and great fun too. The Time Traveller 83 and Time Machine 90 are my favorites. They remind me of the days when I skied gates.
BS: The first touch is impressive and as soon as you take them on the slopes, you are blown away. You can see the quality, but if you’re an experienced skier you feel the R&D behind the product. PB: For somebody that’s never ridden a ski with metal before, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of construction? BS: Titanal skis are super damp which is why you need to work a bit harder on these skis. There’s a slightly nostalgic feel to them, but they’re much easier to handle than the metal skis of the past. The edges engage very quickly, and you get a lot of feedback. Also, if you’re a bit heavier you will love them. Metal skis track very well and are super stable under high speed and tracked-out conditions. But stay in control, otherwise you’ll find yourself on an angry rodeo bull!
feedback. It’s a great new technology and I recommend that anybody who likes hard charging skis should give them a try. PB: Will the “more accessible” Time Traveller 83 be an important ski for BlackSheep? BS: We will stock this ski for sure. I already know which customers will be down to buy one. It’s a perfect ski for everyone who is looking for a solid frontside ski that doesn’t look like the typical race skis from the big brands. PB: You kind of predicted my next question. This is sector is owned by the big traditional ski companies. What can micro-brew ski brands like Amplid bringing to the piste ski sector? BS: The little guys are bringing back the spirit of skiing. Skiing is not only skiing powder or the park. Skiing is always great, and all parts of skiing are great. These skis bring us right back to the origins of where we all started. I love it.

Dry winters and pre-season glacier trips just got interesting. The attacking, metal-reinforced Time Machine 83 eats-up groomers and tears through hard-pack snow conditions like a runaway freight train. With only a hint of an edge, its hooky sidecut pulls its pilot into vortex of grin-inducing Centrifugal forces. Titanal Centribelt 2.0 reinforcement and Antiphase damping confer steadfast edge-hold, predictable behavior and an eerie smoothness to the Time Machine 83 which encourages and rewards more and more speed. Intended for master technicians and the reckless, its aggressive geometry owns the frontside of any resort. Carve perfect corduroy arcs, skip through mogul fields, fool around in the trees or blast through chop like a madman, just be careful not to get your pass pulled by the fun police. PB: Do you have any advice for choosing the perfect size?

BS: Besides demoing to find the right skis, I would recommend a chat with your local ski shop guy. For anybody that wants to buy direct, for the Time Traveller and Time Machine skis I would recommend going for a ski length that’s around 5 cm shorter than your body height.

AMPLID TEST PILOT
T
his winter Amplid opened its R&D process to the public by inviting its most loyal fans to become part of its Test Pilot initiative. Since launching two months ago, almost 200 willing testers have signed-up to Test Pilot, and the numbers are growing daily. Every product that Amplid designs is tested to destruction during the prototyping phase by team riders, ambassadors and members of Amplid’s development team. Before the final specs are confirmed, feed-
back from these sources is used to fine-tune the flex pattern, geometry and construction. By adding Amplid’s most important stakeholders, its customers, to the feedback loop, Peter and the team hope to build even more relevant and exciting gear in the future. Intentionally limited to Amplid’s existing customers and not the broader market, Peter’s adamant that keeping the metaphorical net small and the catch precise is the best way to ensure the feedback is useful.
“We build skis and snowboards with real personality. Building ‘everybody’s darling’ isn’t interesting to me… I think going down that route is the fastest way for a ski or snowboard to lose the essence of what makes it special, its character. Because of that, the selection process is super important: I need to know that the feedback I’m receiving on a new shape, technology or material is from somebody that understands the gear beneath their feet. As an example, if I’m designing a new UNW8, who better to ask for feedback than a three-time UNW8 owner? And similarly, is it possible to make a Facelift lighter? Maybe, but are owners of the current ski going to like it? Isn’t it just good sense to ask their opinion?! That’s why we’re keeping it restricted, because it’s easier for my team to cherry-pick the right testers”. In January the first round of prototypes will ship to testers, accompanied by a carefully prepared feedback form. Each winter Peter plans to select between 10 and 20 Test Pilots to receive test gear, depending on the number of new additions to the collection. When asked why he’s letting the testers keep the test gear, Peter replies: “If our testers are doing the job right, they’ve earned that shred. The information
we’re receiving in return is priceless.” Being involved in product testing isn’t the only benefit of being registered to Test Pilot. Amplid’s marketing manager, Rich Ewbank, explains: “Our aim is to build a community of customers that we can rely on to keep Amplid’s products and marketing relevant. Creating subsidised camps, exclusive events and other opportunities for us to connect with our customers through the winter will keep Amplid heading in the right direction.”

Antiphase
ANTI PHASE
ANTIPHASE TM
THE SOLUTION
AntiphaseTM is a brand-new technology, developed in-house by Amplid, which reduces vibrations, improving board stability. Unlike conventional damping, which relies on rubber elastomers to reduce vibrations, AntiphaseTM is a multidirectional composite layer bonded to a non-Newtonian material, which is placed between the board’s or ski’s tip and binding. It disrupts the natural frequency of a ski/snowboard, stopping vibrations which otherwise amplify and end-up as tip chatter.
A series of small plates, carefully manufactured at Amplid’s factory from pre-cured, unidirectional carbon fiber are carefully orientated and adhered to a Non-Newtonian polymer sandwich. The complete system is placed in milled channels on the base side of the core, in a location where they can most effectively disrupt chatter.
THE SCIENCE
THE PROBLEM Uncontrolled nose chatter is destabilizing and unnerving. For the past twenty years, manufacturers of piste specific gear have side-stepped the problem by minimising tip length, using excessive camber depths and with liberal use of energy absorbing rubbers. Stiff, boring to ride and totally useless in powder, we wanted to find an alternate fix for chatter without the usual side effects.
THE INSPIRATION Looking outside of the winter sports and sporting goods market there’s a wealth of cutting-edge industries developing innovative solutions to kill “bad vibes”. Inspired by research pioneered in the audio and aerospace industries, Amplid began developing a system which uses disruptive interference to damp vibrations. Project AntiphaseTM was born.
WITHOUT ANTIPHASE ANTIPHASE REDUCES TIP FLAP WITH ANTIPHASE
AntiphaseTM works by introducing isolated materials with a different oscillation phase to fiberglass, into the lay-up. AntiphaseTM vibrates with a different frequency and amplitude to fiberglass. Almost instantaneously the oscillations of the vibrating AntiphaseTM are out of sync with the main resonance body (the ski or snowboard) and start disrupting and damping chatter.
THE BENEFITS AntiphaseTM provides superior chatter damping without adding noticeable weight, and it doesn’t confer a soggy, dead feel like elastomer damping. Crucially, AntiphaseTM allows Amplid to utilize nose and tip shapes designed for riding powder on skis and boards that rip hard pack. AntiphaseTM makes centrifugal riding possible in all conditions and terrain.
ANTIPHASE TM FEATURES ONLY IN AMPLID’S CENTRIFUGAL SKI AND SNOWBOARD COLLECTIONS.

Titanal Centribelt 2.0 is a 0.4mm thick, 30mm wide belt of aerospace grade 7075 Aluminium alloy, placed above and below the core. Extra width beneath the mounting area increases torsional stiffness. This new generation of Titanal Centribelt offers the inimitable stability of metal reinforcement without unwieldy swing weight.
Running along the topsheet in a V-configuration from the contact points towards the boots, these narrow bands of Basalt fabric dampen unwanted vibrations, reducing rider fatigue and keeping your edge engaged with the snow for improved control. Get the Rolls Royce feeling!
A narrow band of carbon stringers that run through the centreline of a ski or snowboard from tip-to-tail. POP Band increases longitudinal stiffness and pop without altering torsional stiffness. Shreds with Pop Band feel livelier but remain forgiving.
On the Milligram we have added mulitdirectional glass pads in the binding area, to avoid dings caused by pointy corners of metal splitboard binding bases. These pads will enhance durability without adding undesired weight.
Spanning a snow hole with one split ski at full stride can snap it clean in two. Unidirectional Flax/Carbon stringers along the underside of the core increase bending stiffness, reducing “dishing” in deep snow and increasing breaking resistance. Flax fibres, which originate from a Hemp like plant, are lightweight with good damping properties.

Using Biaxial Glass in the construction of our shreds gives them a flawless blend of response and playfulness whilst keeping them ridiculously lightweight.

FEATURES
K BASE
c TECHNOLOGY
SINTERED 7 HD
Amplid’s ultra-high density sintered base goes like shit-off-ashovel in all snow conditions. It is extremely hard and therefore more resistant to damage.
Z
SINTERED 7 BASE
A premium sintered plastic which readily absorbs wax and will out-run your riding buddies’ bases without breaking a sweat. You better get used to waiting.
a
EXTRUDED 4 BASE
If we didn’t tell you, you’d think this base was sintered. Amplid’s mind-boggling extruded base material offers next level glide properties and rarely needs waxing.
SHRED READY We‘re not going to sell you the best shred you‘ve ever ridden and leave the tuning to somebody else. We give every ride the best tune it will ever receive.
TANGA
A partial, hardwearing topsheet material deliberately used in areas where chipping might otherwise occur. This minimalist approach reduces weight for touring.
NUKEPROOF
W ROUNDTOP
Botox for your skis: To protect the topsheet from aging, our latest ski construction offers the best solution against chipping: Thanks to our 3D mould the PE foil gets welded over a small radius onto the sidewall.
SPLIT TUNE l
We lightly round the edges at the tip and tail, outside of the effective edge. Blunting these edges reduces chipping to the topsheet caused by touring.
