Safety goes digital In our quest of doing the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents, our work mostly revolves around research, biodynamic, anatomic, construction and materials. But through our innovative approach, dedication and commitment in developing groundbreaking protection, we often end up in new areas of expertise depending on the challenge. Since a few years back we have started using more and more digital tools in our analysis and development process. The use of high-speed cameras, accelerometers and other electronic devices have supported our research and resulted in improved and refined products. At the same time we have looked at new ways to promote safety by exploring and evaluating digital solutions and for the first time we can share some of these technologies with you. POC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists.

The 2014/2015 season sees the launch of POCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s H.I. Sensor, which is an digital device that monitors impacts and severe deformation of the liner and alerts when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to replace your helmet. The H.I. system allows us to take fully advantage of the multi-impact EPP and the system is featured in the Skull Orbic Comp H.I. MIPS helmet. Further innovations are the POC ICE products; the ICE tag and the crash sensor. The ICE tag is mounted on the helmet and holds a QR code so that anybody can use their smart phone to scan the tag for identification and to get correct medical information, even if the victim is unable to communicate or unconscious. Our collaboration with ICEdot also includes a crash sensor that is paired with a smart phone. The sensor is mounted to the helmet and is able to detect motion, impacts and changes in forces. In the event of critical forces the app is triggered to send a message to your pre-selected contacts with your exact GPS position, letting them know you need help. Then there is the Thorax avalanche backpack with a revolutionizing jet-fan inflation, with multiple benefits. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to see it to believe it! MIPS

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System and is used to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. A normal helmet is created to absorb vertical impacts very efficiently, but is not as good at the rotational forces. When subjected to an oblique impact, the MIPS system absorbs these forces by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner.

Through examining helmets used by World Cup alpine racers, we identified that they were worn out in the front caused by repeated impacts from the gates. The violence was more severe than we had ever imagined and the discovery led us to developing the MultiImpact Deflector Panels, featured in the new line of Skull Orbic helmets. Our deflector panels decrease the transmitted force of the impact, and increase the shock absorbing capacity of the helmets. This ensures that the helmet performance remains at the highest level when it’s really needed: in a real crash. In the deflector panel of the Skull Orbic Comp, we integrated our patented VPD 2.0 that has extreme impact absorbing properties, proven very efficient for repeated impacts in our body armor collection. H.I. - HELMET INTEGRITY

ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and is recognized all over the world. POC ICE is a proactive effort to provide emergency personnel with correct medical history such as blood group, allergies and basic information like name and emergency contact, even if the victim is unconscious. Through POC’s dedication and commitment in developing groundbreaking personal protection, we often end up in new areas of expertise depending on the challenge. Our collaboration with some of the best minds in science, health and technology has allowed us to push the boundaries and to be at the forefront of safety. Unfortunately, accidents do happen, and with POC’s mission to do everything we can to possibly save lives

and reduce the consequences of accidents, we have looked at new ways to promote safety. Helmet, body armor and goggle constructions and design are critical elements in accident safety but studies has also shown that if we could minimize the time before the victim receives help and provide information needed for correct medical care, we could potentially limit the consequences of accidents. This innovative approach has led to the two components of POC ICE, promoting the idea of digital safety. We have teamed up with ICEdot to provide a system composed of an identification tag and crash sensor, helping the rider to get immediate and necessary medical care in case of emergency.

The H.I. Sensor monitors impacts and severe deformation of the liner and alerts when it’s time to replace your helmet. A traditional liner made of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) absorbs energy by plastic deformation, which is permanent, meaning that the helmet must be replaced after the first impact. A multi-impact liner made of EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) recovers its shape and most of the impact protection after a crash and can withstand numerous impacts without having to be replaced. The challenge with EPP is to know when the liner is worn out. Internal damage to a helmet may not be visible to the user but might compromise the helmets performance in a crash.

To take fully advantage of the multi-impact EPP we have integrated the H.I. Sensor, which is a digital device that monitors impacts and severe deformation of the liner. The sensor makes it possible to detect damage and ensure that the integrity of the helmet is maintained and that the helmet will provide sufficient protection in a crash. The H.I. system consists of stress-strain sensors distributed over the helmet liner that record, collect and memorize any deformation. The severity and history of the impacts are calculated and stored in the device. If one or a combination of impacts exceed the predefined level, an indicator light turns from green to red meaning that the helmet is not recommended to use and should be replaced.

ICE TAG If an accident occurs and the rider is knocked unconscious, scanning the identification tag will allow emergency personnel, or passers-by, to identify the victim and get correct medical information such as blood group or allergies that can be vital for correct medical care.

ICEDOT CRASH SENSOR When paired with the ICEdot smart phone app, the crash sensor is able to detect motion, changes in forces and impacts. In the event of critical forces, the device triggers the app to send a message with your GPS position to your pre-selected contacts, unless you stop it within a user defined time interval. This will let your family or friends know you might need help.

VPD - ®VISCO-ELASTIC POLYMER DOUGH

JetForce is the result of a multiyear collaboration between Black Diamond and PIEPS and is the first avalanche airbag system to use jet-fan inflation. Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the fan spins at 60,000 RPM to inflate the 200-liter avalanche airbag in 4 seconds. Because of its unlimited air supply, the JetForce system can support larger volume airbags to maximize the effect of inverse segregation. Inverse segregation states that in an avalanche, larger objects tend to rise to the surface and smaller ones will sink. JetForce deploys a 200-liter airbag to increase your volume, which reduces the risk of being buried. Due to the JetForce system’s unlimited air supply it is also possible to maintain volume despite moderate

punctures and tears. Once deployed, the fan periodically tops up the airbag for three minutes before automatically deflating the bag. The automatic deflation aids in extraction, makes the airbag easy to repack, and has the potential to create an air pocket if the victim is buried. The Thorax pack has three strategically placed air intakes; the lower left sidewall of the pack, the back panel and the mesh lining of the airbag pocket. The battery has been specifically engineered to be able to operate at very cold temperatures (-30C) and even at low charge levels. On every start up, Thorax performs a complete system diagnosis.

The VPD (Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough) range is highly impact absorbent, comfortable, ligthweight and adapts to create an individual fit. VPD has given us a completely new approach to developing body armor and due to its high level of protection and the ability to transition from soft to hard during impact, we don’t have to choose between safety and flexibility. Lots of body armor may be lightweight but is not optimal for repetative impacts. Some may take one impact with good absorption, but a second impact to the protector will transfer a much higher amount of energy to the user, the third an even greater amount and so on. POC’s Receptor Bug is exclusively offered with Beats by Dr. Dre® headphones built into the neck roll. With the remote control, compatible with most smart phones, you can take calls, switch tunes and adjust volume right from the cord. The helmet has an advanced ABS outer shell and a robust in-mold polycarbonate/EPS liner and the patented VDSAP system with two overlapping shells protects from sharp objects, while providing ventilation that can be closed for colder days.

Three different ventilation systems combined in a hybrid of hard shell and in-mold helmet. The Frontal helmet has penetration proof vents in the front, chimney vents in the back and adjustable top vents to keep your head cool. The in-mold top keeps the weight down and provides excellent shock absorption. The ABS hard shell brim adds durability and provides more coverage and protection to the sides of the head. Frontal has been developed in close collaboration with Jon Olsson.

Fornix POCito is a kids’ version of the award winning Fornix helmet. The helmet is aramid reinforced, well-ventilated and equipped with a size adjustment system that makes it possible to customize the fit of the helmet to ensure it stays safe and comfortable in place. By applying Aramid strings and molding them together with the foam liner, it was possible to develop a lightweight helmet while maintaining structural stability and a high level of protection. Like all POCito products, visibility is a key safety criteria and the Fornix POCito comes in a bright fluorescent orange color and is equipped with reflective patches.

Iris 3P has the POC Partially Polarized lens that is optimized to filter the excessive glare, while letting enough reflections through to distinguish snow from ice, something no other polarized goggle lenses provide. The lens is made of the NXT polymer that outperforms any other lens material and features all of POCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top technologies such as the patented HCD filter and a Photochromatic filter for a tint that adapts to the light conditions.

NXT LENSES NXT lenses are made from a proprietary material that is known as ”visual armor”. NXT was developed as a solution to military fighter jet and helicopter pilots’ demands for a shatterproof canopy that would not distort their vision. All POC’s NXT lenses are equipped with a color vision-boosting filter called HCD (High Chromatic Definition). HCD has an extreme contrast enhancing effect and takes goggle lens clarity to a new level. To keep your lens clean and clear, you will also find an excellent Oleophobic/Hydrophobic treatment as well as an antiscratch and anti-fog treatment. In addition to these unique features, NXT lenses also are equipped with a Photochromatic filter, which enables the lens to change the tint color depending on current light conditions. The 3P lens (POC Partially Polarized) has a polarized effect that takes away excessive glare while letting in enough reflection to distinguish snow from ice.

Thorax is an 11-liter capacity backpack featuring JetForce Technology. JetForce is the first avalanche airbag system to use jet-fan inflation and allows for multiple deployments on a single charge. The system is triggered by pulling the activation handle, located on the shoulder strap, which will inflate the 200-liter airbag in 4 seconds. The airbag will remain filled for three minutes before the fan automatically reverses and deflates the bag. The deflation of the bag will potentially create an air pocket if the victim is buried and will also allow for easier victim extraction and fast repacking.
