My name is Zhu Yining, studying envirnmental design in Tong Ji University. Environmental Design is a developing integrated subject in China.I recieved a pluralistic education in these four years. My projects include architecture design, lanscape design ,interior design and urban design. Experiences i got from those different projects just like the foundation of the pyramid. providing a possibility for me to study futher in one specialty.

24

Diversifying experience makes my mind flexible.I can look at a problems from different angles and think at different scales.Besides, unlike purpose of traditional design--------creating an object, environmental design is more focused on designing a relationship, I do contain detailed planning in every project, as well as operation mode research, in order to create and contribute to a sustainable "living / spatial ecosystem".

ART LAB Art Lab transforms good places into unique venues where art can happen.

S-Science T-Technology E-Engineer A-Art M-Math

This project researches the maker ecosystem, as well as operation and space design of makerspaces in different regions. Then propose operation strategy and implement it in space design. Build a makerspace on the given site. The operation of makerspace is difficult in China, for lack of DIY culture in countries. Public awareness is also very low here. The missing market, on another hand, makes the crowdfunding platforms in China are much weaker than that on Kickstarter. The most important task of introducing maker movement is to popularize maker spirit. Thus we decide to set up a maker college, not only giving comunity a channel to know about maker movement or learn skills, but also providing makers with equipment and a platform for communicating. Makers can also make profits by giving courses, inheriting the spirit of one-to-one. In corporation with venture capital company, the makerspace offers fund to help makers develop into entrepreneurs and start-ups.

MEDIA LAB The Media Lab is an interdisciplinary research laboratory devoted to projects at the convergence of technology, multimedia, sciences, art and design.

FABLAB Standing on the coming wave that brought by 3D printing technology, open design and internet, Fablab-Shanghai is aimed to build interdisciplinary platform and to bridge the gaps between humanity, technology and design.

BIOLAB The mission of Biolab is to address the unmet needs of life sciences and personalized medicine, by the creation and supply of innovative technologies and products in the fields of biological reagents, proteomics, and diagnostics.

PROGRAMMING LAB Aakash Programming Lab(APL) is a simplified learning tool for C, C++, Python and Scilab programming languages.

SITE OVERVIEW The main building of our base is once a warlord’s private residence of the Republic of China. The original facade and decoration are well preserved. We can’t alter its exterior elevation and structure. The East Building and West Building, formerly functioned as massage shop, are combination of crowded small rooms. Now the building is separated into three parts, in which there are a lot of stairs that making the transportation really complex. Stamped housing in the east caused poor light in the first floor. We plan to reconstruct the exterior elevation and structure of the East Building and West Building,

Our strategy is to strengthen the tie within three buildings, interiorize the outdoor space to get larger public space. The position of our project determines that the key to create vitality is the relationship between indoor and half indoor design, in other words, to create a place for colorful activities in a limited space. Located in such a historic environment, our base is covered with concrete materials of coarse yellow to keep in coordination with the historic buildings of the Republic of China around. In the meantime we use large areas of glass curtain wall to reflect the surrounding environment.

The name of the studio comes from a classical Chinese poem, describing the poet‘s feeling about living in mountain forest. He thought musical instruments are not necessary in his life since moutains and rivers make sounds like music. “Qing Yin” means delicate and graceful music in chinese.

CONCEPT Classic Chinese folk music: Mountain and Flowing. Playing in history and nature.

Back Stage

Our design inspiration stems from the classic Chinese folk song: High Mountain and Running River. Water, as an important element, runs through the whole space. We combine the functional requirements of every space with feeling of different fragments. Meanwhile we use different landscape approaches to embody in space the feeling of mountain and stream. The water is used throughout the space and the facades are opened up to reach a rich experience in spatial fluidity. As for formal language, we intersperse modern simplicity square in this quaint old building to juxtapose history

There are four houses. Entrance here like walking into mountains.Than vistors will be lead to the first house —— lazor interaction in which will make musical instruments’sounds. An audition room faces the first courtyard makes people feel like listening music in nature. The second house is a spacious rehearsal room available for visiting. The wall at the entrance displays the instruments. The second coutyard is renovated into a small stage. Square slabs floating on the water, and so do the stage and tearoom. The audience all sit on the slabs, enjoying the show. The third house is private classrooms, for one-to-two classes or one-to-four classes. The visible landscape outdoor avoids making the classroom too narrow, while it also inspires the learners to play. The LED lights embedded in the wall can present different patterns depending on environmental requirements. The third house and the fourth house is connected by a glasshouse, which can be opened to get a flowing space while there is no show. Finally, the main stage on the river bank. Century Avenue TEAM:Li Hongbo;Ying Yihan Landscape Architecture Design Spring 2015 The project aims to identify problems on the street, so as to propose solutions and implement them in space design. Century Avenue, connecting Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone with Century Park, is planned to be built into Shanghai’s largest financial center. However, due to the barriers on functions of regional planning, its main road is too wide while the branches are insufficient, which results in low space utilization rate. In addition to passing office workers, current users mainly include the elderly residents living nearby. In the near future, after removing the old houses, this area will be lack of vitality. Therefore, our design strategy also needs to respond to the changes brought about by urban renewal.

PROBLEMS & CAUSES As the only eight-lane road in China, Century Avenue is 100 meters wide with 69-meter-wide green landscape sidewalk. It destroyed the original urban road network, leaving a lot of 3-way intersection and areas of triangle. To cross the road, passengers always need to pass through these triangles, with two to four traffic lights on their way. The heavy traffic on this road wastes too much time to wait. On the other hand, due to the barriers on functions of regional planning, there are only office buildings on both sides of the road with inadequate facilities. The road’s only function is passage. Except for peak hours, this area is like an abandoned island where tramps and wildcats gather. The current users of Century Avenue are mainly the elderly living in the old houses nearby. The government intends to converted these old buildings into office buildings in the next decade, which implies an empty scene throughout the entire Avenue.

STRATEGY

2

1

Our planning strategy is to use these triangle areas, adding 3-D traffic system, scattered landscapes and comfortable leisure space. Meanwhile, we also plan to introducing diverse functions such as catering, retailing and exhibition to meet people’s consumer demand and spiritual needs, so as to form an urban activity center.

CONCEPT 1. Connect all the regions; 2. Plan walk and rest routes, adding rest platforms in transport hubs; 3. Joint the road and platforms together with sleek curves, adding functions such as catering, retailing and exhibition under the overline bridge; 4. Further strengthen the organic form, forming a network connecting to all the regions. 3

Air Matters Team:Liu Cunyi;Bai Zidi;Li Hongbo Sustainable Community Design Winter 2014 New initiatives and innovations aimed at supporting the popular ‘War on Pollution’ have led to the creation of widespread new thinking about the pattern of the 21st century city. It is now commonly held that the most significant contributor to achieving outstanding environmental quality in the new city will be the proposed abandonment of fossil fuel technologies and the dissolution of State provided infrastructure. Instead, future urban communities will be required to self‐invest in sustainable design strategies finely tuned to fostering their specific needs and characteristics. Excited by the ever‐increasing number of days with high air‐quality, but anxious to implement stable design strategies for its future, a local community organization has approached the College of Design and Innovation to develop environmental design solutions to smoothly transition to the required self‐sustaining model. Under their Start Fresh campaign, residents are seeking to envision a new layer of live/work/play amenities to showcase a long future of health, prosperity, and creativity in their neighborhood.

TRAFFIC Too many motor vehicles occupied pedestrian space. Narrow roads can not accommodate so many users.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION Due to a long history of construction of the buildings, warmth retention property is bad. Energy consumption needs to be reduced.

SHANTY TOWN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE A small number of public toilets, narrow space. Rubbish on the roadside, causing odor pollution. Harsh environment also makes residents lack identity of the community.

STRATEGY This urban design proposal for the Zhou Jiazui Neighborhood of Shanghai intends to built a sustainable and low carbon community, all focused around an ecological renewal of an urban environment. Justified relationships include people/nature, nature/urban density, and people/ people. Achieved through differing implementations of nature, five strategies are explored: Open space, New space, Infrustructure, Adapted space,Mobile space,

OPEN SPACE 70 percent of residents of shanty town are elderly people. They need public space to use and they have enough leisure time. Open space along the river is dirty, people rarely come here to have fun. Now the spcae open to the community and become a space for farming. In this way we increase the green area, realise vegetable self-sufficiency, and increase the space for public activities.

Mobile space chain all the other space together. It creats more grean area, reduce the traffic emission and encourage people to go out by foot or by bike.

By the elaboration of a complex and split up system of sustainable community, we wanted to care spirits before fitting out spaces. The main stake is to connect the district with the large territory, via the river, and so to attract other populations of users in its center. The objective is then to replace the centrality in the middle of buildings. The spirit of shanty town can be extended to other neighbours that mix different function as much as possible, in order to favor social mixity and to create versability. More green spaces and public spaces can encourage people to walk rather than to drive.
