Something happened, some people fell, some people cleaned up the scenes. Our emotions diluted by the media, our attention diverted to other matters. We bear the burdens. Time passed. We are forced to accept that these are the new normal. But now, I will respond to this. I want to stop these tragedies.

PERSONAL STATEMENT Growing up, my mother was a doctor, and I found myself constantly exposed to human suffering. I hold a deep respect for that profession, but ultimately, doctors treat the symptoms of suffering. I decided that I wanted to find a profession that addresses the root causes of suffering, and find a vocation that would help people live their whole lives in comfort and happiness. In high school I read a book called Breaking the Ground by Daniel Libeskind. I was mesmerized by how physical environments affect the human condition, and so I decided to study architecture. During five years of undergraduate study and one year of practicing in this profession, I have gained a solid understanding of architectural design. With my ultimate, utopian goal of helping vulnerable groups, I have approached architecture with a special focus on the sociological and technological perspectives. My fourth-year studio project involved a Wine Factory on the edge of the city of Xi’an. The isolated location and lack of automation caused a number of issues, including a rising suicide rate. I proposed a new model that reintegrated the factory with the city to alleviate these problems. To achieve this goal, I used concrete cantilevers to create shaded playgrounds for people from surrounding areas to visit during the workday, allowing the workers more time to spend interacting with their families, and strengthening the bonds that underpin the local community. In my third-year studio design, I proposed a renovation scheme to rebuild dangerous and crowded urban villages. Currently, most cities deal with sub-standard urban villages by either razing them to the ground and rebuilding them, or micro-targeting the most hazardous buildings for replacement. But these solutions fail to adequately resolve the resultant housing crisis. To address this problem, I designed a new community right above the main roads of the urban villages, to offer residences for the tenants who have to relocate. Such an approach allows for the buildings in good quality be kept and renovated, while giving people from the torn down buildings a place to live during the upgrading process. Thusly, we can improve living standards while maintaining the unique character of these urban villages. I see architecture as a system of tools. The charm lies in how their work can be used by real people. Combined with my original goal, which is to help prevent human suffering, I would like to see architecture utilized to actively improve the lives of human beings, rather than serve the interests of the profit motive alone. Therefore, after building my experience in solving real world problems by working in an architecture practice for a year, I wish to go back to university to pursue a master’s degree. The courses at the University of Edinburgh’s Master of Architecture program cover comprehensive aspects of building science, including aesthetics, conservation, technology, history and other interdisciplinary skills that I need to study to further my understanding of architecture. With the skills, experiences, and knowledge on offer at the University of Edinburgh, I believe that I can better realize my utopian dreams of improving the living conditions for vulnerable groups of people in society.
A Rising China In April, 1979, Xiaoping Deng appointed Shenzhen as the first Special Economic Zone(SEZ). As a third-world country, China’s development was not as balanced as the developed countries, and also not as stable. For a country with the largest population in the world, as well as many other problems, we needed a propaganda to unite every one and build towards the same goal - Building Beautiful New China” . It was there and then that China began its fast development.
Vulnerable Groups of People Some people are left behind from the fast development. They are pushed out of sight of the general public; not reported by the media, forced to live under great pressure, but yet incapable of making any changes. Many tragedies happened as a result. Some chose to end all these by committing suicide; some chose to commit crimes like the employees from Foxcwonn. Unfortunately, the government is too focused on its ‘big dreams’ to take care of the intractable small incidents that’s happening around us. Yet when these small incidents upgrade, they are wiped away completely all at once. For example, the tearing down of urban villages causes the people in poverty to flow to another urban village. Then the tragedies go on occurring in circles, with a different mask each time. So for me the question is: how can I help the police and the government relive the situation? In this era of fast changes, as an advocate of a certain kind of theory and technology, I tend to propose strategies by thinking deep about the core of a problem. Therefore, my focus is on the life of ordinary people.
Architecture as a System of Tools The tools of a government are the orders; the tools of doctors are medical equipments; the tools of a hacker are codes. Architecture is the tool for everyone. As a physical matter, a building has its own context. Ever since ancient times, there have been wood structures, brick structures, and many other structures that got invented to adapt to human needs. At the same time, no one can predict nor measure the power these structures could bring. Therefore I see these structures, i.e. architecture, as a system of tools. The charm lies in how it can be used by people.
Responding to Geopolitics The environment where a project locates, is one of the most important factors that determin whether it’s feasible. A site that presents the most problems also proposes challanges and opportunities. It can help realize daring ideas. My hope is to find the core of the problems by doing researches, so as to provide strong and applicable strategies. The three projects in my portfolio are all located in Chinese cities, sharing similar complexities. Yet each of them is also unique in their individual contexts: the overly crowded residential community in the urban center; the lack of high-tech workers on the peripheral area of a city; different life conditions of workers in factories. Therefore, I proposed three strategies in response to these different situations.
Q: How to rebuild order for dangerous and crowded urban villages based on the dwellers’ future happiness, instead of simply tearing them down?
A struct new or a
Q: How to continue production under the workers’ suiside scandals that were caused by bad working environment, high pressure and the lack of technology in remote cities?
A answe wo resid
Q: How to recover the sense of belonging I lost due to the gradual blurring of my memory and the frequent moving of my residence?
A: Usin elem and s drew fra co
A: Invoke a new spatial ture that incorporates a rder for life, production and economy based on government control.
A: The new beer factory eres to the needs of the orkers and surrounding dents so as to prevent it being shut down.
ng different architectural ments to match the roles scenes in the event and a collection of memory agments of the past and onstruct my own house.

The Great Leap Forward was a push by Zedong Mao to change China from a predominantly agrarian society to a modern, industrial society - in just five years. And after that, Xiaoping Deng inherited that ideology and began his experiment.
In the 1980s, Starting with that ideology, a great many Highrise Buildings fulfilled the city for urbanization. However, most of villagers weren't willing to follow this step, they refused their home to be demolished. As a result, the urban village emerged.
There are two existing answers, one is demolition, which only makes villagers move to another urban village, the other is micro update, but the house quality and infrastructure are still very poor. So we bring up the key question: how to build a new space order in which their lives can selfsufficient meanwhile their house was also reserved.
After the nuclear strategies, we provide detailed strategies to response to the villagers' problem in the urban village. We found five catagories of problems: security, convenience, comfortable, adaptability needing and Future Urbanization.

d then we located these blems on the material ace of urban village. mmarized by typology's thods, there are four egories: Transportation, astructure, Public Place d Private Space.
So the new city is complementing the old urban village, providing the function it lacked. the new city has three area: living area, production area, and transport area.
To integrate these three areas into the new city's structure, we organize the three area's function by an analogy to human body organization.
In the new city, it's structure is as spine bones and ribs, in between there are gaps for transportation and water purification, as vascular. It's subsist prototype, containing living, service facility and production, is as organ and muscle.
Finally, thanks to the superposition of city in the crack, urban villagers finally have got their brand new life. we believe that they will be poetic dwelling in the future.

Urbanization Ideology: A Great Leap Forward The Great Leap Forward was a push by Mao Zedong to change China from a predominantly agrarian (farming) society to a modern, industrial society - in just five years.and after that,Deng Xiaoping inherited that ideology and begin his experiment.
Urbanization Typology: Metropolitian Construction

Duplicated
Developer get land by goverment, for easier construction and sold,Divide the land by frame, and then rise up the pieces for building to sell.
Urbanization Results: Population Statistics Through that methodology,China city development quickly,Now,Half of population in China only need to use 17% (164.37/960)area of China Territory.
03 URBAN VILLAGE DWELLERS: ERASED HOMELAND
Erased Homeland: Urban Village's Life
Our Hope There rent is cheap than other site, and only live in there i can save money for future.
If there will be demolition,I'll consider to move to other ruralurban village.
We don’t want our homes to be torn down. This is the only place for us in this big city. People from urban villages have the opportunity to move to affordable housing on the original location. But they are forced to look for other places to live during the whole upgrading process. Because the rents are too high for them to afford, they are forced to switch jobs and move to other urban villages, or relocate to other cities. These two results are not what people expect.

For cure ruralurban villige's complicated, old home be domolished, and use high rise buildings replace them.but in this kind of program, most of villigers usually choose to move house to other ruralurban villige because of the lower rent and their low income work.

Urban Village Interior Problem Research The problems above are not just one-off snapshots, but repeatedly occurring in a positive feedback way, resulting in a vicious circle of urban villages throughout the city.
Symptom Wangjiacun, the urban village,is located in Beilin District of Xi 'an, close to the second ring road and close from the city center.Beginning with the subjective feelings of villagers, we enumerate various specific problems and phenomenon and try to exhaust them.According to our understanding of the habitability of living space, we finally divide all the problems into five categories: I.Security Problem
II.Convenience Problem
III.Comfortableness Problem
IV.Adaptability Problem V.Problem in Urbanization

Pathogeny By exhausting the problems of urban villages as possible, we realize that the problems of urban villages are numerous and complicated. we further study on the phenomena of each problem, searching for the essence and material reasons behind it.We finally package the problem into four types of material space: I.Imperfect Transportation
· · · ·
Deep Narrow Alley·······[5][9][20][23] Transverse Escarpment············[8][31] Occupied Passage················[12][15] Slender Main Road···············[13][15]

IV.Inadequate Private Space

Conclusion So far, we boil all these various urban village problems down to three major contradictions: 1.The contradiction between the explosion of the number of people living and the near saturation of the total space area 2.The contradiction between the demand for living supply and the backward infrastructure 3.The contradiction between the demand for public life and the scarce public space and public facilities.

An artificial river was planned in the site.
Together with the rainwater, the river water is collected on the main road of the village in the city and stored in deep pits.
River water purification consists of six steps integrated into the inlet purification tower
Part of the purified water is used to supply the homes and fields inside the new building.
Part of the filtered water is supplied to the existing waterdeficient houses in the village
Sewage generated within the new building is piped.
Step1: storage pool
Step2: Anaerobic baffled tank
Step3: V-type filter
Step4: Sedimentation basin
Step5: Distiller
Step6: Clean water pool
The still still distills the waste water into distilled water and sludge.
Distilled water is transported to deep pits in the main road to participate in the river transportation cycle.

· Capacity of population: The estimated number of the new urban village dwellers will be 3660, family number 1447. The original number of dwellers is 3000. This would mean that the new urban village will hold the capacity to accommodate more people in the future. · About Economy: Due to the poor economic condition in the village, it is necessary to allocate resources accordingly. Economically, by adapting a water cleaning system to the old remaining buildings, it saves the costs of introducing new water system for the whole village. From a resouce perspective, the adapted water system serves as the fundation for living and production. Structurally, the living and production areas are both based on the structure, thus forming the the village-within-village form. · About production and living: The systems in the village-within-village includes: pedestrian road, traffic roads, independent houses, public space, vertical transportation. The system of production area includes: planting area, drying area, storing area, live stock area, factories, logistic area, and waste treatment area. The aim is to provide dwellers with a economically self-sufficient utopia.

If new factory can make worker have communicate with residents,it means worker can have another society charactor in that place, the new city factory can make woker have more sensibility to sorrouning,so make resident rise the worker and associated the worker on product line.
Save the factory Stop the reason of the tragedy, make the worker be visitor enjoy the scenery of resident's make and communicate with them.
Finally through this structure prototype, achieve the social character transfered, and release their longtime pressure situation, make an old factory as a new city factory, worker as a new civilization worker. Save the old factory from shut down's abyss.

The old winery is located in liulin town, shaanxi province. As the starting point of the town's expansion, the old winery plays an important role in driving the economic direction. High-pressure work promotes the occurrence of accidents, which will eventually stop the benefits. Managers need higher benefits, so they increase the work pressure. If we can't crack the loop, tragedy will repeat itself.Eventually the factory must close early.
25 WORKERS: ERASED IDENTITY
An Eyesight Long working hours, lonely working conditions and pressure from leaders lead to suicides and other unexpected events. While observing their working status.A worker's eye caught mine. If workers have intermittent breaks during their working hours, there is an opportunity to release their stress and free their minds during this time.
Their Fate The high-pressure work environment and supervision from the leaders urge the workers to gain recognition by working harder. If they quit, it's hard to find new jobs nearby. their lives are squeezed in the gap, not only the real life but also the mental world.
A moment I found that the families of the workers often lived near the brewery, and the interior of the brewery was often used as a casual play area for their wives or children to walk and play in.Do their families miss them when they work? I wonder.

Strategy: Transport Charactor
01-Rise Up
Support the production line with functions provided to the surrounding residents.Adjust the height and scale to provide workers with a more favorable view and obtain accurate structural models.
02-Association Worker
The tie rod not only bears the weight of the production line structurally, but also visually unites the workers working in isolation into a collective.Improve perception of the outside world.
If the new winery can connect the winery worker with his family, it means the worker can return to his social identity on the production line.No longer alone.

Attention Research: Process to Transport New Identity
Eyesight Operation Calculate the visual area of workers at work. There are six types of workers on the production line, who are responsible for sorting, checking, labeling, laminating, boxing and packing.Different categories of workers have different free horizons due to different production processes. At the same time, the free horizon of workers can be obtained.Place a new identity in the free field.
29 WORKERS: TRANSPORT CHARACTOR
A worker's New Charactor:Dancer Eventually the winery became the winery of the new city, and the workers became the workers of the new citizens. In the new factory, the workers on the production line can even become dancers for the audience.
Building Envelope For resident's need and worker's demand for production. Provide the climate boundary for entertainment and working.
I-Beam Placed on the concrete barrel, as a transition point between barrel and truss.
Truss Use eighteen truss to suitable the length of product line and link the tie bar.
Tie bar Hanging the product line and associated the worker's eyesight to make them as a partner.
Support structure Concrete barrel support the function which resident's need, and rise up the product line for worker get a wilder scenery.

Erased Memory: Untouchable Nostalgia
When I was growing up, I lived in different areas for a period of time due to different schools and my family's demand for housing. The change of living geographical location led to the lost the sense of belonging and the contradiction of the need for belonging, which led to my homesickness: untouchable nostalgia. My memory because of forgetting also step by step away from me.All the events I have experienced in the past exist in my memories and photos.Memories and photos can eventually be damaged. This led to my growing need to belong.I hope to rebuild my fragmented past memories and find my sense of belonging in my house.
