New York Regenerative Campus > 2013 Arch 301 Program: Satellite Campus for Ball State University Location: Brooklyn, NY Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 Produced by: Zach Young The Ball State regenerative center was designed to teach through examples and experiences. Occupants will be able to live and grow while learning about the building and all the systems that interact with nature. The public will feel as if the building is rising out of the earth and make it one with the earth. Since the building was design to “live it will be able to be easily sustainable from solar panels to a living machine, to aquaculture and agriculture.

Uban LAB: Regenerating King Park > 2014 Arch 302 Program: Ball States Urban Graduate School of Architecture Location: Indianapolis, IN King Park DIstrict Produced by: Zach Young The Urban Lab adaptively reuses the existing building by keeping most of the façade plus exposing the beauty of the existing masonry and wood. Capturing light the new additions form a dominate axis addressing the Monon Trial. Openings in the exterior wall display the original masonry unit. The new architecture reinforces the existing structure and allows the new addition to rise above the building. The urban lab also gained a new fablab, auditorium and a cafÊ in the new additions.

Community Rising > 2014 ACSA/ AISC Steel Competition Program: Boarder Crossing Station Location: Detroit, MI DelRay Community

Path of Least Resistance

Produced by: Edgar Alvarez and Zach Young Detroit has shouldered its fair share of hardships over the past decade. However, one thing keeps the city going: THE PEOPLE OF DETROIT. The border crossing draws from this inspiration. Deriving the structure from a sequence of a man rising from the ground, the COLLABORATIVE STRUCTURE represents the COMMUNITY ELEVATING DETROIT. The structure celebrates the POWER OF HUMAN CAPITAL and is a reminder that the community is the city’s greatest asset.

Poro[city] > 2015 Arch 402 Program: Mixed Use Location: New York City, NY Times Square Produced by: Zach Young The context of project Gotham is set in the future, where cites are now trying to deal with higher levels of extreme air pollution and climate change. Poro[city] looked into creating a safe haven for the public. The concept of this design was to integrate a building skin that could filter and clean pollution. Looking at wind studies to help influence the form to maximize air filtration and program distribution. The porosity of the form acting like a air filter for Times Square. Particle Simulation

Something Big > 2015 Arch 498 Description: Digital Fabrication Introduction Course Produced by: Alan Dang, Rachel Henry, Zach Young My Roles: Overall form designer The project was to design something furniture sized. We were pushed to use laser cutting for the main fabrication technique for this project. The side table was influenced by the human spine. I tried to abstract the spine and nervous system that intertwines through the porocity of the vertebrĂŚ.

octoTOPOautoMOTO > 2015 Arch 498

Description: Digital Fabrication Introduction Course- Data Driven Robotic System Produced by: Andrew Wit, Tyler Bracht, Jamie Craine, Alan Dang, Caitlin Dashiell, Shelby Harris, Clint Johnson, Eric Lawler, Jared Monce, Linh Ngo, Logan Richmond, JĹ“l Sterling, MĂŚleen Taylor, Zach Young, Craig Zehr My Roles: Part of the electronics team- assembled and wired all connections, sensors, boards and motors and helped with writing the coding. As well as final assembly of model. We wanted to design an interactive wall panel. One that people can have influence on the movement of the octoTOPOautoMOTO. The panel would slowly start to blossom after someone would walk by the panel.

Ergonomic Brick > 2015 Arch 581 Description: Digital Fabrication Foundations Course Produced by: Zach Young

The project was to design and fabricate series of bricks which have a clear relationship to the hand. We were to use 3d printing to create our prototype, then use that 3d print to make a mold, so we could cast multiple plaster bricks to mock up a wall.

Robotic Gestures > 2016 One day workshop

Description: Introduction into robotics Produced by: Ben Slightom, Tyler Bracht, and Zach Young

This was a one day robotic workshop lead by AAron M. Willette and James Kerestes. It was and introduction to robotics aimed at understanding how industrial robotic arms move and can participate within an architectural design process. We looked at the difference between the linear movements and the point to point movements. Trying to see if there is any design benefits that can result in letting the robot do some of its own behavior in movement.

C|OUR|SE > 2015 Arch 501 Program: Chapel Location: Columbus, IN Mill Race Park Produced by: Zach Young The objective of this design problem was to create a sacred space for the union of two people in Mill Race Park. The form was impacted firstly by park being in a flood plane that floods almost every year, secondly I wanted to create a dark sacred space with intentional light wells. I wanted to slow people down when they are going through the space. Then placing the light wells as beacons of importance. First location was the arrival before the separation wall. Second location once you move around the separation wall. Third location is the largest for the ceremony of joining two people to one.

Green Monster > 2015 Arch 501 Program: Library Installation Competition Location: Winterset, IA

Produced by: Kirstin Baum, Austin Haag, Justin Martin , Derek Morphew, Eric Weed, Vohn Wilson, Zach Young My Roles: Overall form designer + creator, cnc mill file set up and operator, and helped with assembly The project was designed to be an interactive and multi-use entry piece. Where people could meet and read while acting as a Icon for the Library and City. Our goal for the project was to attract the younger population of Winterset by peaking their interests and curiosity. In hopes that they will stay in Winterset and not move to other larger cities.

The Swarm > 2016 Arch 601 Program: Skyscraper Location: Speculative City Produced by: Zach Young The studio was focused on developing architecture where ornamental conditions eliminate the reading of part to whole relationships and structures are the result of an emergent process. Generation of complex geometry by way of the redundant deployment of simplistic operations will help with form finding. I then used the knowledge gained from form finding to have a higher level of control and knowledge base of what certain formal moves accomplish and be able to use those moves strategically. My skyscraper looked into a new tectonic of the skyscraper. I expolored the possibility of having a mega structure that allows modules to be inserted or taken out as needed.
