UNITE > 2013 ICMA Completion Program > Satellite Campus for the University of Saint Francis Location > Fort Wayne, IN Produced by > Zach Young The concept behind this design was to connect this new site to the existing art district a few blocks away and to revitalize the downtown area. Uniting these two areas it will generate more people to engage downtown. The new art gallery on the sites is the corner stone of the other end of the art district. Once there the new buildings push the visitors and residents to engage in the new plaza that connects the art district to the theater. The design of the site pushes people outside and to engage in the new art corridor connecting the art gallery and the theater.

NEW YORK REGENERATIVE CAMPUS > 2013 ARCH 301
Original Form
Program > Satellite Campus for Ball State University Location > Brooklyn, NY > Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 Produced by > Zach Young Massing
The Ball State regenerative center was designed to teach through examples and experiences. Occupants will be able to live and grow while learning about the building and all the systems that interact with nature. The public will feel as if the building is rising out of the earth and make it one with the earth. Since the building was design to “live it will be able to be easily sustainable from solar panels to a living machine, to aquaculture and agriculture.

Monon Trail
Urban regeneration must address structures but also improve the old. The Urban Lab adaptively reuses the existing building by keeping most of the façade plus exposing the beauty of the existing masonry and wood. By capturing light the new additions form a dominate axis addressing the Monon Trial. Openings in the exterior wall display the original masonry unit. The new architecture reinforces the existing structure and allows the new addition to rise above the building. The urban lab also gained a new fablab, auditorium and a cafÊ in the new additions.

COMMUNITY RISING > 2014 ACSA/AISC Steel Competition Program > Border Crossing Station Path of Least Resistance
Location > Detroit, MI > DelRay Community Produced by > Edgar Alvarez and Zach Young Detroit has shouldered its fair share of hardships over the past decade. However, one thing keeps the city going: THE PEOPLE OF DETROIT. The border crossing draws from this inspiration. Deriving the structure from a sequence of a man rising from the ground, the COLLABORATIVE STRUCTURE represents the COMMUNITY ELEVATING DETROIT. The structure celebrates the POWER OF HUMAN CAPITAL and is a reminder that the community is the city’s greatest asset.

This community is based around sustainable resources. This community is able to reuse grey water after it is filtered in the wetlands. The solar panels allow the community to stay comfortable due to shade and bring the community its power source. This community is a learning community and will grow to become better for years to come, due to the frame work that is set by the community.
