The photographs featured in this publication were shot on unceeded lands belonging to: the Bayougoula, Houma, Natchez, Chakchiuma, lbitoupa, Koroa, Ofogoula, Taposa, Tiou, Tunica and Yazvoo tribes in Mississippi; the Osage, Caddo, Chickasaw, Tunica, and Quapaw tribes in Arkansas; the Muscogee, Yuchi, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Shawnee, and Seneca tribes in Tennessee; and the Akokisa tribe in Alabama. I acknowledge my privilege in photographing land violently stolen from Indigenous people and land my ancestors were forced to cultivate.
Visiting Jackson, Little Rock, Memphis, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery would have not been possible without the support from Cinnamongirl Inc. and the Commonwealth Club. Thank you Kristina Nemeth for organizing the trip. Thank you Dana King for listening and sharing your art. Thank you to Ashley Hayes for all the conversations. Thank you to RenĂŠe Richard for believing in Black girls. Thanks Saaleha for operning the opportunity to me.
