Declaration
With architecture flourishing, buildings are no longer simply constructs, they are also capable of taking on different connotations, but formalisms such as redundant and repetitive high-rises symbolise architecture itself, and we need to be wary if the meaning of its symbols becomes too shallow. Architecture should be seen as a symbolic declaration of the materialisation of social networks. These symbols should be seen as frivolous opposites, and we should be concerned with how underlying forces such as economic, cultural, and ecological issues are reflected in material form. Based on this, design as a knife for sculpting symbols should be a powerful enough statement to change, improve, strengthen and shorten the networks of modern society and facilitate social transformation. We architects should harness the power of symbols as thought leaders and game changers, and we have a responsibility to shape the dynamic built environment towards a better resilient future.
