is, without exaggeration, one of the most attractive towns inGreece, with it particular ‘colour’, its wealth of history and architecture – preserving one of the best surviving Venetian cities. In the summer, Rethymnon has visitors from all over the world, who base themselves here for the exploration of the Prefecture and indeed the whole island, whilst in the winter the students of the local University bring a buzz to the place. The main attractions of Rethymnon are concentrated in the Old Town, which is worth exploring without any preconceived route, but by just walking along the narrow alleys and so discovering picturesque spots, architectural
treasures, old mansions and other signs of those conquerors who have passed through here. Setting out from the Megali Porta (Porta Guora),(the Main Gate or Porta Guora), one of the few remaining remnants of the city’s fortifications, our tour starts at Aghios Frangiscos, the Neratze Mosque (Conservatory) and the
Historical and Folklore Museum which are all to be found in the neighbourhood of the newly-created Asia Minor Square (Plateia Mikrasiaton). From this square we can see the Turkish School with its distinctive architectural style. Next we pass the Venetian Rimondi Fountain (or the Taps, as the locals call it!), from where we can wander through the narrow lanes of the Old Town to discover the church ‘Our lady of the Angels’ before going on to the Fortezza. From here we have the opportunity to look down upon the town and its beach front. Descending then to the Venetian harbour, we return to the shopping street (Arkadi) with its impressive Loggia, and other restored structures of really exceptional beauty, such as the Kara Mousa Pasha Mosque.

Travel is full of major decisions — like which country to visit, how much to spend, and when to stop waiting and finally make that all-important airfare purchase. But beyond the big picture, it’s the little things that can make a trip easier and less stressful. Following are 8 simple but clever tips to smooth the way on your next vacation. 1)Get your phone sorted out There are few things more freeing than an unlocked smartphone. Personally, I prefer a good travel backpack. Some people like the hybrid backpack/rolly-bags, but I find them cumbersome. Avoid regular rolly bags, they’re more trouble than their worth. Big suitcases should be avoided at all costs (unless you’re going skiing or something and need to bring a lot of bulky gear). 3)Pack light This will be the hardest thing about travel. There are few harder urges to overcome than overpacking. “But I might need this!!!” is so common there are industries built around needless junk and charging you for heavy bags. Aim for 30 pounds,
tops, for everything. If you don’t bring a lot of electronics, aim for under 25. You don’t more than a week’s worth of clothes. You can do laundry everywhere. Seriously, travelling light will change everything about how you travel. 4) Cloud data backup I had one friend drop her camera in a taxi and lose 3 weeks’ worth of photos, nearly her entire multi-country trip through Asia. Cloud backups are cheap and easy to use. I like Google Photos, but there are a ton of other options. 5)Apps for you Google Translate is the greatest app for any traveler, by FAR (download languages when you’re on WiFi, and it will work without a data connection). Google Maps is a close second (download an area on WiFi, and it too will work without a data connection). 6) Lock your phone Your phone, and what’s on it, is probably the most valuable thing you have on you. Phones are easily replaced. Personal data theft is way worse. Pictures, addresses… how many banking apps and websites do you have that automatically log you in?

If someone could casually pick up something, or pull it out of your hands without any effort, maybe that’s not the best place for it. 8)Mark your bags with an easily recognizable item The days of flower-pattern steamer thrunks are long gone; now we all buy our bags at the same stores from the same manufacturers. The result: an eandless stream of nearly identical bags on the
baggage carousel. The solution: mark your bags by tying a colorful ribbon, stitching a unique patch or putting a large sticker on your bags. You won’t see other passengers pulling your bags off the carousel to check for their tiny name tags, and you will be able to see your suitcases come out of the door from miles away. 9)Bring copies of your passport. If your passport gets stolen or lost you want to be sure that you can still get back into the country, or be able to prove your citizenship. 10) “If you can’t afford travel insurance, then you can’t afford to travel”. It’s that simple . Let’s face it. You don’t hesitate at purchasing car insurance when you buy a car , or house and contents insurance when you buy a home. So why not travel insurance?? Call it what you like – vacation insurance , trip insurance or holiday insurance, not having insurance is not worth the risk. Anything can, will and sometimes goes wrong. If it does and you are not insured, you can be up for a lot of money and inconvenience.

Ceramics is the basic occupation of many inhabitants, who make not only decorative pottery but also utensils. Ceramics is a traditional art, the history of which is as old as the Minoan times. In the past, the pottery workshops flourished in the prefecture of Lasithi, producing storage objects of every day use. Today, potters at Thrapsano, Kentri and Margarites mold clay just like the Minoans did thousands years ago. Hundreds of vessels, identical to those found in the Minoan palaces, are still used for storing olive oil, grains and other agricultural products.

Carob... The lost treasure of Crete Carob has a long history in 50 years. It does not bear fruit human consumption. The Greek Theophrastus recorded in 4BC that his fellow Greeks called the carob the Egyptian Fig. There is also evidence that Ancient Egyptians used carob. Both the pods and seeds have been found in Egyptian Tombs. Further, the Romans ate the Carob pods when they were green and fresh for their natural sweetness. Thus, Carob is no newly discovered food. Cretan Carob In Crete, the carob trees thrive in difficult soils and like arid conditions that are naturally free of fungus and pests. The idea to create a site of astronomical research at Skinakas was conceived in the summer of 1984. Soon after the construction of a road to the mountain peak commenced. The university of Crete, The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH, former Research Center of Crete) and the Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik (Germany) agreed to build and operate together a telescope with the purpose of providing modern education in Astronomy to University students and also of support-
ing astronomical observations with emphasis on the research of extended sky objects like comets and gaseous nebulae. The expected arrival of the comet Halley in the Spring of 1986, after 76 years of wandering through the solar system, set the time schedule for the installation of the telescope, which having a wide field of view, and equipped with a highly sensitive electronic camera was especially suited for the observation of the comet. Indeed, after the construction of the road on the rocky mountain and the completion of the first stone-made observatory, hundreds of people from all over Greece, among them many officials, came to Skinakas in the Spring 1986, in order to participate in the inauguration of the Observatory as well as to observe of the comet Halley. In 1988 the construction of the guesthouse, also made out of stone, was completed and immediately hosted the First School of Observational Astrophysics in Greece. The successful installation and operation of the first rather small telescope confirmed the excellent astro-
nomical conditions at Skinakas characterizing it as one of the best sites for high quality astronomical observations in the Mediterranean area. Consequently, the cooperating institutions decided to further develop the Observatory by the installation of a larger and very modern telescope with a mirror diameter of 1.3m. The telescope, which remains the largest of the site, was inaugurated in Autumn 1995. The 1.3m telescope, seen on the right, was commissioned in 1995 and is the principal observing facility of Skinakas Observatory. It is a modified Ritchey–Chrétien telescope, that is it has a hyperbolic primary and a hyperbolic secondary mirror, in order to provide a large field of view with high image quality. The mirrors were built by Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. The telescope mount is equatorial, computer controlled and was constructed by DFM Engineering. The Skinakas Observatory The Skinakas Observatory nebulae
is a research facility operated jointly by the Foundation of Research and Technology - Hellas (F.O.R.T.H.), the University of Crete and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics of Germany. The Observatory location, at Skinakas peak on the Psiloritis mountain at an altitude of 1750m, offers excellent conditions for high quality astronomical observations of in the area of the Mediterranean. It is equipped with a variety of instruments which qualify it as one of the world’s best equipped telescopes, at least relatively to its size. Research Activities The research that is performed at Skinakas Observatory covers a wide range of different fields in Astrophysics. The main observational programs are: 1.
