General Safety Instructions One of the primary considerations in designing and manufacturing this ProPaver by BOMAG was to make the machine and the operation of same as safe as possible. Shielding, simple adjustments and other safety features were built into the Paver wherever possible.

All machinery should be operated and serviced only by responsible persons who have been properly instructed and delegated to do so. Read and thoroughly understand all instructions contained in this manual, the engine manual, and all optional equipment manuals before attempting to operate or service the paver. 1) Only the operators should be allowed on the operator's platform when the paver is in operation. 2) be

Clothing worn by all persons working close to the paver should fairly tight and belted. Loose jackets, shirts or pants should never be worn because of the danger of getting caught in moving parts. 3) Be sure all shields and guards are in place and in good condition before starting the machine. 4)

Always mount and dismount the paver from the rear, using the walkway, steps and handrails provided. Never dismount paver to the side, or forward.

5) Assure that all hands and feet are clear of moving parts before starting paver. 6) Make sure everyone is clear of the paver before starting so they cannot be struck by or caught in moving parts. 7) ing

Never attempt to tow or move the ProPaver before first engagthe tow hitch arms, the machine could possibly overturn.

8) to

Keep the operator's platform clean, Do not use it as a place carry loose tools, lunch boxes, etc.

9) Refuel the paver only when the engine has been shut off. Do not permit sparks, open flames or smoking within 50 feet of paver when refueling. Never refuel paver with screed heaters lit and operating. 10) or

Never allow horseplay near the paver when it is in operation being serviced. Safety is no accident - Take time to be safe!!!! 3

Escaping hydraulic fluid under pressure can have sufficient force to penetrate the skin, causing serious personal injury. Before disconnecting any hydraulic lines, be sure to relieve all pressure. Before applying pressure to a system , be sure all connections are tight and that all lines, tubes, and hoses are not damaged. Fluid escaping from a very small hole can be almost invisible. Use a piece of cardboard or wood, rather than hands, to search for suspected leaks. 11)

If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can develop if proper medical treatment is not administered immediately.

12)

Always be sure that all control switches are in the "OFF", "Pause", or "Neutral" position, hopper wings and screed are lowered and the engine is shut off before leaving the operator's station.

13)

Never use the wash down system when the screed heaters are lit or operating.

14)

Never clean, lubricate, or service the paver when it is running.

15)

Do not open propane valves to the screed burners unless flame is present to light the burners. An accumulation of unburned gas could result in explosion. Do not allow smoking when lighting propane fired screed burners.

16)

Do not allow smoking or the use of open flame when checking the electrolyte level in the battery. An explosion could result. If skin or eyes are exposed flush immediately with water and see a doctor.

Safety suggestions for persons working in the area of an operating paver 1)

When working in the vicinity of the machine, stand in full view of the operator; but never in front of the machine when the machine is operating. Stay clear of hopper, side arms, and screed when machine is operating. Do not walk in front of the hopper or extended screed, or stand at the end of the screed if the hydraulic screed extensions are being used.

2)

If necessary to remove spillage from the roadway, have the operator stop the machine first. Working close to a moving machine is dangerous Accidents don't just happen- they are caused! Take time to be safe!!!

4

3)

Do not remove paving material from the hopper or auger trough while the paver is operating. The operator should be advised when adjustments are being made.

4)

Do not attempt service or repairs you do not understand or cannot perform competently.

5)

Never go between the tuck and the paver.

6)

Do not attempt to clean , lubricate or service the paver while it is running.

7)

If any safety related defects are discovered, inform the operator to shut the machine down and correct the defect. Pick up and transportation procedure

When you receive your new ProPaver, you should establish the proper pick up procedure for your truck. The proper chain link to maintain a level and stable condition should be located and marked permanently with paint or wire. If the truck used to transport the Propaver is a short bed vehicle, a small winch should be mounted to the frame of the truck to secure the bed in the horizontal position. BOMAG Paving Products, does not recommend transporting the ProPaver for long distances while attached to your dump truck. A maximum speed of 35 miles per hour is recommended. A trailer is recommended for this function. The transportation of the ProPaver for short distances is described in the above paragraph. Safety doesn't cost - It saves! Take time to be safe!!!

Assembly Units POWER UNIT GROUP The Power unit group consists of a heavy-duty 20-horse power engine that is coupled to a triple gear pump. The pump nearest to the engine is an eight-gallon per minute pump, and drives all hydraulic cylinder functions (gates, wings, screed extensions, screed lift and hitch arms.) The next two pumps drive the left and right augers. four gallon per minute pumps each.

These are

If your paver has the electric over hydraulic backup option, this is a four-gallon per minute pump driven by an electric DC motor. This pump will drive all cylinder functions. This pump cannot drive the auger drive functions. This backup system may be used by actuating the ignition key switch counter clockwise, to the electric hydraulic position on the ignition switch. All BOMAG Paving Products tow type asphalt pavers are equipped with manual hand pumps. These pumps are capable of driving all cylinder functions of the machine. The appropriate valve must be actuated, for the function you are attempting during the stroking motion of the pump. HOPPER ASSEMBLY The hopper on the ProPaver by BOMAG tow type pavers is eight feet wide with a wing on each side. The wings are hydraulically operated, which allows the operator to raise and lower them with ease. The lowering of the wings eliminates any truck/paver interference and also allows easy access to the asphalt mix from the side of the paver. This is especially valuable when you need to shovel from the hopper.

WARNING: Never attempt to remove asphalt mix from an operating machine. Instruct the truck driver and the paver operator to cease operation before attempting to remove mix from the hopper.

The hopper gates are hydraulically operated with adequate pressure to close the gates, when the hopper is full of asphalt. The gates may be operated independently or as one by adjusting the valves located on the hopper back, directly above the hydraulic pump cover. The double acting cylinders on the gates permits trouble free metering of material on the open and close operations, and will eliminate excess material clean up at the end of the paved mat.

6

SCREED ASSEMBLY The screed assembly on the BOMAG Paving Products tow type asphalt pavers have a standard paving width of eight feet, and can be hydraulically extended to thirteen feet. This is a very unique screed in so much that the entire mat surface is compacted. The screed extensions are not strike offs, they have compacting wear plates attached to them. The screed depth controls are attached to the hopper frame by two spherical, self-aligning, cast iron nuts. This is to insure effortless depth adjustment regardless of the paving setting. The screed assembly may be adjusted to a three-inch crown or a two-inch invert. Because of the tight machining tolerances of the connecting joints between the screed and the hopper, accuracy of the mat thickness can be accomplished. When an adjustment or setting is made on the depth control screw, a rapid change in mat thickness is accomplished and can be maintained with ease. In most cases, when a desired mat thickness is obtained, little or no compensation will need to be made. UNDERCARRIAGE The independent mounted boggy assemblies contribute largely to an accurate and successful paving operation. The independent boggies are precisely located, and mounted into the hopper frame. This offers the capabilities to pave at different depths on either sides of the screed assembly, and offers an accurately paved mat. To change the paving depth from five to ten inches, in lieu of the standard zero to five inch setting, it is necessary to remove and flip the boggy assemblies over, and reinstall them into the support legs. Two double acting cylinders power the hitch arms that attach to the dump truck to pull the paver. The hitch arms have three position adjustments for the rim rolls and side rolls that will permit attaching to most trucks. WARNING: Never get betweenthe dump truck and the paver when attempting to engage the two. Serious injury or death could result!!

WARNING: Never attempt to tow the paver before first engageing the hitch arms. Serious injury or death could result!!! 7

Paver set up and operation When the paver is on the job site and before asphalt is dumped in the hopper, the machine should be sprayed with cleaning fluid (with the spray cleaning system furnished) inside the hopper, on the bumper rollers, augers, screed extensions, and under the screed. Check the screed for crown, valley, or level condition. This is accomplished by checking the indicator for the "0" setting and by sighting the underside of the leading edge of the screed. Adjust the screed to proper position with the ratchet on the center of the screed. Detach chains holding the paver to the truck by raising the truck bed. Start the engine, move the hopper wings and tow hitch arms to the open position. Connect the tow hitch arms in the rear wheels of the truck. Excessive pressure should not be applied to the tires; retract the hitch arms only until the side rolls touch the tires of the truck. To move the paver in position for the first paving pass, put the tailgate hook in the center of the tailgate of the truck and hook the screed lift chain into the tailgate hook. Raise the screed off the ground about four inches. Before beginning to pave, it is essential that the screed be elevated a distance equal to the desired mat depth plus enough extra height to allow for the mat compaction by rolling. This is done by placing "starting blocking" under the screed. If a finished mat depth of two-inches is desired, starting blocks two and one quarter inch thick would provide a suitable starting height. The starting blocks should be at least as long as the width of the screed wear plate, and placed lengthwise with the direction of travel. Place one block under each end of the screed. If necessary, place additional blocks beneath the screed extensions. This placement will provide the screed wear plate with bearing surfaces that are essentially parallel with the grade. Lower the screed, bringing it to rest upon the starting blocks. With the screed in this position rotate the screed depth cranks until the screed wear plate is completely flat on the starting blocks and free rotary travel (no resistance) of the screed depth cranks is attained. Rotate the screed depth cranks an additional one half turn clockwise. When paving begins, check mat depth and adjust screed depth cranks until desired mat depth is attained. Use the screed depth gauge as a reference point only. To adjust the ProPaver by BOMAG paving width from the standard eightfeet, simply extend the hydraulic screed extensions to the desiredpaving width. The screed extension controls are located on eachoperator's console. 8

Before beginning to pave with bituminous materials, the screed should be preheated. This helps to prevent the hot mix from sticking to a cold screed plate, and produces a smooth, tight mat surface. Preheating should be performed if the machine sets a long period of time between loads allowing the screed plate to cool. At the beginning of the day allow 15 minutes for heat up of a cold screed. Shorter periods of time will be sufficient when the screed is sitting on warm material. When heating the screed, the extensions should be retracted full in to insure proper heating of the extension wear plate. IMPORTANT: Avoid overheating of the screed which may warp the screed wear plate and frame.

Never refuel paver with screed heaters lit and operating.

Never use the wash down system when the screed heaters are lit or operating.

Do not open propane valves to the screed burners unless flame is present to light the burners. An accumulation of unburned gas could result in explosion. Do not allow smoking when lighting propane fired screed burners. If screed heaters should go out for any reason, never attempt to relight until excess propane is ventilated from the screed burner chamber.

Failure to observe the above could result in fire, personal injury or death!!!

To light the screed heaters, turn the tank. Adjust the pressure valve until the eight psi. Hold an open flame next to the nozzles and open the burner valve. Repeat the opposite burner.

valve on top of the propane gage reads between six and holes in one of the burner the previous steps to light

The ProPaver's screed strike off shoes are located on the end of the screed extensions and may be used in two different ways. When not paving adjacent of previously paved areas, the strike off shoes should be free floating. Loosen the jam nuts on the outer most hex head bolts, and rotate the bolts counter clockwise until the strike off 9

shoe will move easily. bolts.

Retighten the jam nuts to secure the hex head

Loosen the jam nuts on the two vertical five inch long all thread hex head bolts, and rotate the bolts clockwise until maximum vertical movement of the screed strike off shoe is available. Retighten the jam nuts to secure the long hex head bolts. The screed strike off shoes are now full floating, and will maintain a positive edge of the mat at any paving depth. When paving next to a previously paved area, if a smooth joint is to be made, the screed strike off shoe on the side where the joint is being made should be adjusted so that it is level with the bottom of the screed wear plate and secured. To secure the screed strike off shoe, simply reverse the steps described previously to make the shoe full floating. Set tailgate chains on truck to desired opening of the tailgate. Raise the truck bed sufficently to dump into the paver hopper. Engage the augers at this time in the "Automatic" position. Open gates sufficently to allow material to the augers. It is not necessary to open the gates to full open position. The augers are visible from the rear of the machine and a constant check on material in front of the screed can be observed continuously. This will be very helpful when operation of the augers is in the "Manual" position. When the augers are operating in the "Automatic" position, the augers will engage and disengage when the material flow is needed. Move the paver forward four or five feet and stop at this point. Check the thickness of the pad. This will allow time for the screed extensions to warm up properly to provide for a smoother mat finish. When you approach the end of the paving pass, observe the augers and the amount of material in front of the screed. Within a short timr the operator will be able to close the gates, and control the amount of material in front of the screed to match within a few inches of the previous mat. No tailing of the pad and virtually all clean up at the end of the pad is eliminated. Hook the screed lift chain in the tailgate hook and raise the rear of the paver off the pad. Caution should be taken when approaching the end of the pass to minimize the amount of material in the hopper. This will make it easier to maneuver the machine to the next pass. If the width of the required pass is less than eight feet, the pull can be lapped over the previous pull. The screed on the lapped side of the paver is to be set on "0" and the screed extension fully retracted. The compaction of the screed should erase any marks in the asphalt mat. 10

Cleaning / Wash Down To ensure proper performance and maximum life of the ProPaver, it must be cleaned and washed down with diesel fuel at the end of each work day while the machine is still warm. Daily clean up of the paver can significantly increase the life of components in the material handling areas and reduce many mat problems. Abrasive materials which accumulate in bearing, auger, and hopper areas can break loose and produce tears in the mat as they pass under the screed. All residual asphalt materials should be removed from the paver, especially in the material handling areas, and the surfaces sprayed to "terminate" any remaining residue. This leaves a petroleum film on surfaces to reduce the potential for material sticking the next time the paver is used. The clean up and wash down procedure should be performed away from the paving site. The paver should be moved to a designated area and all functions shut off. WARNING: Diesel fuel is both flammable and slippery, extreme care must be exercised during the clean up and wash down procedure to avoid fire or personal injury.

Never wash down the machine while burners are operating. This could result in fire or explosion!!!

Never smoke or allow other persons who are smoking into the area during wash down. This could result in fire or explosion!!!

Never stand in the hopper or on or around the augers while the paver is operating.

Run the augers only when required to gain access to all surfaces and only after personnel are out of the material handling areas.

There is a wash down hose on the ProPaver, next to the left operator's console. The ON/OFF toggle switch is located on the right console. The wash down switch should be turned on only immediately before wash down is to begin, and off immediately after it is completed.

ProPaver General Maintenance The ProPaver tow type paver/finisher is a high quality product designed to provide many years of reliable operation if properly maintained. The following information will aid in proper maintenance. 1) During the first few hours/days of operation with a new machine, check fasteners (bolts, nuts, ect.) on high vibration areas to ensure tightness. Occasionally these will become loose while a machine is starting up. Tighten any loose fasteners you might find. This should not continue after 10 to 20 hours of operation, (hitch arm bolts, hopper wing mounting bolts, ect.). 2) Replace fluids and filters as recommended in the Power Unit Maintenance and Lubrication Points sections. 3) Refer to and follow recommendations in the Wear Check Points section. 4) Check and maintain all fluid levels daily. 5) Clean asphalt residue from hopper, screed augers, and anywhere else it accumulates after each use. (Refer to Cleaning/Wash Down Section) 6) Repair (touch up) paint chips, nicks and worn spots to prevent exposing raw steel to the elements to help prevent rust. 7) Replace any decals that have been damaged, worn, or painted over.
