Texas Commission on the Arts recently designated the Midtown Management District an official Cultural Arts and Entertainment district for the state of Texas. Midtown is the first management district in the state to receive this honor and joins a list of 18 other communities that benefit from the power of an artfocused community.

Mayor Annise Parker, members of Houston City Council, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities at the Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) recently announced a new program to provide free audio and visual smoke detectors to members of the local deaf community. CHS and the HFD will place 2,000 smoke detectors into the homes of families with hearing loss.

The Hanover Company has purchased a 1.2 acre site in BLVD Place for a 29-story complex containing 355 apartments designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Solomon Cordwell Buenz. The Hanover Post Oak will have apartments available for lease, ranging in size from 650sf to well over 3,000sf for some of the penthouse units. The luxurious resident clubhouse will be located on the eighth floor and will feature lounge areas with WiFi, a movie theater, a fitness center, a catering kitchen and private function room. 1. THE MENIL COLLECTION www.menil.org Claes Oldenburg: Strange Eggs, on view thru February 3, 2013. The Strange Eggs are a remarkable group of collages by American artist Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929). Completed over the course of two years after he moved to New York City from Chicago in 1956, they constitute some of the artist’s earliest known works and represent a pivotal moment of experimentation. 2. HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY www.hcponline.org Soldier, at Ease, on view November 8. Through the work of
stoneware ceramic vessels and pate de verre glass sculptures mimicking iron cookware. The show features outstanding work in all craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and mixed media. 5. LAWNDALE ARTCENTER www.lawndaleartcenter.org “F” Team, on view thru January 12, 2013. As a continuation of the “Famous Monsters” mural created by Daniel Anguilu for the 2011-2012 season, Lawndale Art Center presents a collaborative mural by Daniel Anguilu, James Burns, Tierney L. Malone, Angel Quesada, Michael C. Rodriguez, Roland Saldaña and Dandee Warhol. This project is the first collaborative effort for this group of artists. Elements of street art help to navigate the narrative design and special attention is paid to complementing the building’s historic nature and location. 6. Tim Hetherington, Louie Palu and Erin Trieb, this exhibition will look at how active soldiers spend their private time “at ease,” while they are off-duty and also after they return home. Photographs and videos by these three photographers, as well as images created by active duty soldiers themselves, illustrate a more personal experience of the soldier as an individual. 3. The Rothko Chapel, founded by John and Dominique de Menil, was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief in a modern meditative environment inspired by the mural canvases of Russian-born, American painter Mark Rothko (19031970). 4. HOUSTON CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT www.crafthouston.org CraftTexas 2012, on view thru December 30. The seventh in a series of biennial juried exhibitions showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft. Featuring works by 40 Texas artists, the exhibition includes everything from a largescale installation of crocheted linen and latex paint to
This museum pays tribute to African-American military history from the Revolutionary War to modern times. During the 1860s, soldiers of the 10th U.S. Cavalry were nicknamed “Buffalo Soldiers” for their fierce fighting ability and bravery. 7. HOLOCAUST MUSEUM HOUSTON www.hmh.org Blood Memory: a view from the second generation, on view thru March 24, 2013. In the national premiere retrospective of her work, “Blood Memory: a view from the second generation,” artist Lisa Rosowsky explores the “second generation” experience as the daughter of a hidden child and refugee from the Holocaust. Themes of repression and loss emerge, as do memories and stories about a family decimated by war. In this new exhibition this knowledge is represented through a variety of media, including quilting, sculpture, printmaking and installation. 8. CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF HOUSTON www.cmhouston.org Remember Your First Car? On view November 15. Hot rods ready to rumble! Remember your first set of wheels? Not the first one you drove as an adult, but the very first car you owned as a child? Cruise back in time through Darla Lexington’s vintage pedal car collection, an exclusive installation of more than 100 children’s pedal cars on display. The collection tells the nostalgic story of how Darla and her late husband, John M. O’Quinn, began collecting classic cars in 2003 in hopes to one day build a world-class automotive history museum for Houston. 9. THE HEALTH MUSEUM www.thehealthmuseum.org Sonic Sensation , on view thru February 15, 2013. Experience our sonic world and the sensation of being surrounded by everyday sounds in this interactive exhibit. Experiment with pitch, test your own hearing, make a movie soundtrack, and step into the ever-popular Scream

Chamber! Learn about the anatomy and physics of how we hear, find out about decibels, amplitude, frequency, pitch, sound waves and what you can do to protect your hearing. The 1,500-square-foot exhibit consists of fourteen interactive stations. 10. HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE www.hmns.org Maya 2012: Prophecy Becomes History, on view thru March 31, 2013. Mayan civilization was one of the longestlived in the Americas. A Stone Age culture, the ancient Maya developed the most advanced writing system in the New World and domesticated plants we all still enjoy eating, for example, corn. This exhibition presents the story of the real Maya, which spans over three millennia. Topics include the evolution of kingship, the development of writing and math, astronomy and timekeeping. 11. HOUSTON ZOO www.houstonzoo.org TXU Energy presents Zoo Lights, on view November 23. The exhibit will transform the Zoo with more than 300,000 LED lights illuminating more than 50 animal-themed light displays, 15 miles of tree lighting, and seasonal songs and stories. Sip hot chocolate as you stroll through the Zoo and take in all the awe-inspiring sights, including whimsical colorful projections over 15 feet tall, life-size lighted animal sculptures and “Holly Berry,” a 1958 Cadillac featuring vibrant lights choreographed to joyful music. 12. RICE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY www.ricegallery.org Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art, on view thru November 18. The exhibit features 72 works by 67 artists, and seeks to redefine the canon of African-American art by offering a more in-depth, inclusive presentation of the artists and their aesthetic and social concerns, according to the Driskell Center. 13. THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON www.mfah.org Constructed Dialogues: Concrete, Geometric, and Kinetic Art from the Latin American Art Collection, on view thru January 6, 2013. This exhibition highlights several key avant-garde movements engaged in the production of concrete, geometric and kinetic art. The presentation outlines the different paths taken by pioneers such as Lygia Clark, Leon Ferrari, Gego, Hélio Oiticica and Joaquín Torres-Garcia. The exhibition contextualizes key aspects of the MFAH collection and reveals the correspondences between several different artistic projects of the 20th century. 14. This exhibit presents a cross-section of work by a new generation of artists from China working in video and video installation. A separate program of cinematic work by emerging artists will also accompany the exhibition. 15. THE JUNG CENTER OF HOUSTON www.junghouston.org Paradigm Shifts and Other Clichés by Dora Dillistone, on view thru November 28. Ancient Eastern materials provide the means to a contemporary expression based on the vents in the artist’s personal history that cause a shift in thinking. ASIA SOCIETY TEXAS CENTER www.asiasociety.org Portraiture Now: Asian American Portraits of Encounter, on view November 8, is a collaboration with Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program to bring Houston the first major showcase of contemporary Asian American portraiture mounted by the Smithsonian. Through the work of seven artists from across the country and around the world, the exhibition offers thought-provoking interpretations of the Asian American experience, and representations against and beyond the stereotypes that have obscured the complexity of being Asian in America.

EN YEARS INTO THEIR LOVE AFFAIR, THE ARTISTIC TIE THAT BINDS KATY ANDERSON AND PATRICK MEDRANO IS STRONGER THAN EVER. A NEW BABY, EXHIBITS IN ATHENS AND PARIS AND BIG LEAPS FOR THEIR NONPROFIT FODICE PROJECT TELL US THIS CREATIVE DUO HAS NO PLANS OF SLOWING DOWN.
“We are 3 years into the Fodice project. We are just now tied in to the right people as far as preservation. We are just getting to the point where we can raise real money,” says Anderson about the nonprofit organization they created in 2008. The abandoned school they are re-purposing sits just outside Anderson’s hometown of Lovelady, TX. It was built in 1938 for a segregated, largely AfricanAmerican community and was only used for about 20 years. The building was abandoned with desegregation as the population migrated to other towns and schools. Anderson discovered it during her last year of high school. “It’s very remote. You have to go down a dirt road for six miles just to get there and there are maybe three houses that people live in,” says Anderson.
The couple has been working together since the day they met. “The first piece we ever did was a silhouette of Katy and me. In between the chests, a film would go through it. The film was a negative of all the photographs she had taken since we had been together, which was only a couple of weeks. We’d already taken a whole roll of film that was interesting enough to put in,” explains Medrano. It was a path that only fate could have drawn. “(Before) I would have said ‘I never want to collaborate’,” says Medrano, a self-taught artist. “But it’s just how it happened. There’s me as an artist, strictly painting and sculpture, then there’s Katy, who does strictly photography. Then there’s Anderson-Medrano that is able to do all of those things, and more. It’s that thing I think is so powerful to people,” explains Medrano. “We are artists at heart. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t do it,” he says.
Drawing attention to the history of the Fodice Community, the revamped building will serve as a space for an artist residency program, replete with studios, a gallery and private living space. “We were able to purchase the building and land, we put up a privacy fence and this summer we put electricity on site, so we can start doing construction,“ says Anderson. “We have some huge supporters. Carolyn Farb is one of our biggest supporters and she sits on our board. She’s really been instrumental in helping us move forward. We have big hopes for this next year,” she reveals. “It’s a huge piece of African-American history,” adds Medrano.
Anderson + Medrano collaborative works are currently on view in Athens, Greece, at the Athens School of Fine Art in a show entitled Western Sequels: Art from the Lonestar (through Jan. 15th). “That’s through Gus Kopriva, who is a big supporter and collector,” confides Medrano. The pair also has pieces on view in Paris, France, at Dorothy’s Gallery, in the Bastille District. “It’s a show that was created to support the Barack Obama reelection and to encourage Americans abroad to vote,” Anderson tells us. Medrano’s solo work can be seen November 17 during Artcrawl 2012 at John Reynold’s curated show Birdbrain at Mother Dog Studios (720 Walnut, 713.229.9760). They are also regular fixtures at Gallery M Squared (339 W. 19th Street).
When they met in 2002, the couple began creating a large body of work in the abandoned school. “There’s no one to bother you there. Honestly, we’d get naked and go take crazy, imaginative pictures,” says Anderson. A trip to a Marfa, Texas exhibit in 2007, set in a restored fort, inspired the duo to establish the Fodice Foundation.
Adding to an ever-growing body of work, the couple recently welcomed a baby girl, Tomorro Rose Medrano. “People don’t believe us, but if it had been a boy, we were going to name him Quiet,” says Medrano.

YOU MAY KNOW DAVID FROM HIS WORK WITH THE LEGENDARY HOUSTON BAND SPRAWL, AS THE FOUNDER OF NAMELESS SOUND OR BY THE SLOWED DOWN AND BASSED-OUT TROMBONE SOUNDS OF HIS OWN SCREWED ANTHOLOGIES PROJECT. HE’S ALSO GOT A RECORD COMING OUT WITH RAPPER AND MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST JAWWAAD TAYLOR AROUND THE END OF THE YEAR CALLED THESE ARE EYES, SEE?
You’ve seen so many of these kids grow up – do a large percentage of them continue to make music, and do they become a part of a bigger network that you’re creating? I couldn’t really say that in terms of percentage because we see a lot of kids, and a lot of the kids that we see are in places like homeless shelters, so it’s hard to track that and see what they take from [the sessions]. The core of our organization – before we expanded to have the reach that we have with all of these different sites Like a community outreach? – has been the youth ensemble. This is before we were going to the homeless shelI don’t consider it to be a community outreach. I consider it to be at the core of what ters, before we were going to refugee kids – all of this. It started with this youth we do, actually. Nameless Sound has been around since 2001, and I’ve been doing ensemble. And this is why I don’t see any of it as outreach. I see that as the thing by this kind of teaching since ’97. We see about 150 kids a week at 16 different ses- which everything came out of. And the youth ensembles have always been kids – sometimes teenagers, – sometimes a little younger, sometimes young adults – who sions, and it’s all about doing improvisation and creative music with them, and seeing that type of music making as something that can be very valuable come to us and they sign up for this class. And that group has always been for their own personal development and the community developa very interesting, very diverse in every way, group of musicians. That ment. We have kids who come to us and participate in our youth group, since before Nameless Sound, that’s the group I’ve been doing since ’97. To me, there’s actually a whole story in those ensembles, and there’s really like a whole generation of musipeople, where they went. A lot of them are people who are cians, many of whom are very well known now, who have doing really interesting things, getting a lot of attention in not come out of those ensembles. Whereas doing interesting things on their own, whether it’s connected to experimental music Nameless Sound is about taking people who are artists and bringing them into a or whatever. It’s hit that stage where you can see the fruits of it, really. context where they become teachers. It’s kind of coming from the other side. You just went to a music conference in Berlin – what did you take away? Well, the music conference was this organization called Exploratorium. They brought me there three years ago to talk about the kind of music education we do because it’s a pretty unusual thing. Not too many people are doing this kind of experimental music and improvised music and avant-garde music in an educational context, with young people.

I met Mr. Graf at an OrchestraX concert (you hipsters will hopefully remember that edgy group started by John Axelrod); his love for bringing classical music to the masses was obvious. As part of their “A Graf Farewell” season, the Symphony is celebrating James Bond’s 50th anny with a musical tribute on November 23-25. • Charles Dove of Rice Cinema (www.ricecinema.rice.edu/) is jumping for joy not only because they got a new HD projector but (even more importantly…) a new air conditioner. Their “Mediterranean Film Festival” brings together films and folks from Greece, Turkey, France, Egypt, Israel and Italy starting 11/16 through 11/19; the kick-off is Thursday, 11/16, 6pm. It’s being co-sponsored with the Consulates of each country as well as the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts and the Department of Public Affairs and Multicultural Relations. • Big congrats to Lacy Edmondson of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas (www.drafthouse.com/houston), who welcomed baby boy Riley last month! EVENT AN EVENING WITH DEEPAK CHOPRA WHY TO BENEFIT THE AKSHAYA PATRA FOUNDATION WHERE WESTIN GALLERIA HOTEL WHEN SEPTEMBER 9 Over 500 guests mingled over the lovely music of the Indian sitar, buzzing with excitement to hear advisory board member Deepak Chopra speak passionately about his involvement with the Foundation. The crowd of supporters and friends were in awe as they learned that for the past eleven years the foundation has helped feed children in more than 9,000 schools throughout India, and today is the world’s largest NGO-run midday meal program, serving more than 1.4 million children daily. The appeal of the evening ended on a high note when Leena and Ash Shah made a legacy endowment of one million dollars to the foundation to the applause of the crowd.

Nearly 3,000 art patrons and dealers, from all over the world, attended the opening night preview party for the second annual Houston Fine Art Fair. The crowd comprised of both glamorous and cutting-edge art aficionados gathered at the ultra-chic VIP Lounge designed by Rottet Studios. The space showcased masterpieces by local artists, including prints by 002’s art director Alex Rosa! Here they enjoyed refreshments, mingled with friends, compared notes and strategized what aisle they would target next. The crowd buzzed about the location’s smart layout of open aisles and dramatic 12-foot high walls. Sales were brisk with sales made by 500 artists including Andy Warhol and Fernando Botero.

ecent national studies show that families across America are searching for homes that aren’t only green, but also healthy. A study from RCLCO, a leading real estate research firm, shows that this trend is growing even faster than homes that only feature traditional green or energy-efficient homes. Whether they are parents of children with asthma or allergies, or just plain worried about the cumulative effects of the toxic world we live in, owners want home features that improve indoor air quality – highquality HVAC systems, air and water filtration systems, and non-toxic building materials. This is not surprising considering the explosive growth of organic foods in recent years and even the growing demand for non-toxic children’s toys.
But, is there help out there for families seeking healthy havens? Although there are several great programs in existence that educate Realtors about what makes a home green, these programs tend to focus on energy efficiency and sustainably produced building materials. To make sure that there is no missing link between families demanding healthy features and the growing number of firms offering these options, New Living has recently created the Healthy Home Expert (HHE) Certification for Realtors. The full-day course helps Realtors to recognize healthy home features and advise homebuyers about healthy home improvement options. Realtors who’ve completed the course have a strong understanding of the relationship between health and housing, and can even help sellers make their homes healthier! This program is modeled after trainings offered by The National Healthy Homes Training Center and after New Living’s Green Painter Certification program. As one Realtor, Rhonda Power with Boulevard Realty, who holds a GREEN certification and now the HHE credential, put it: “More and more these days I’m finding buyers, from baby boomers to social millennials, are not only evaluating whether or not a home fits their needs, but whether or not an area fits their lifestyle. Walkability to shops, markets and eateries is important to them, as well as easy access to bike trails, parks and the arts…This program not only answers a need but makes a contribution to the Houston community!”

The night before our shoot, Ellis had just signed a lease on San Felipe for the old Vida space which will be the next Liberty Kitchen. In the business since ’98 with Tonic, Ellis has learned a lot but enjoys coming up with the concept, design, development and completion. His employees inspire him every day, but he enjoys the food aspect and “the people most of the time.” Lance Feagan and Ellis basically operate everything and are working on a project in Austin right now. GRADY GAINES Saxophone Legend Houston blues and R&B saxophone legend Grady Gaines launched his career in the mid ’50s when he became the band leader for rock ’n roll icon Little Richard’s seminal backing band, The Upsetters. Gaines spent much of the 1960s crisscrossing the country when The Upsetters became the go-to backing band for a who’s who of artists. Now 78, the leader of Grady Gaines and the Texas Upsetters maintains a busy schedule of local gigs. Music runs in his veins. “My grandfather, Andy Gaines, was a violin and harmonica player who traveled throughout East Texas For Rod Evans’ and Louisiana playing on the buses for full interview with tips. Warner’s been in the craft beer business for over 25 years. He got his degree in Germany in brewing science in 1990. In other words, he’s not messing around. From Colorado, Warner’s been in Houston since last summer to start Karbach. The locally made beer’s been around for a year and is growing fairly quickly for a smaller brewery. What makes it great? It’s fresh, locally made and the variety of beers offered insures something for everyone. Roark tries to get a local band every day if he can. With over 20 years of radio experience, Roark started off at Alvin Community College, hosted Uncastrated Album Rock which landed him a gig at the Arrow, then to KPFT’s Sound of Texas show to where he is today. Roark’s mission is to put good music on the radio in Houston, which he’s happy to say he’s doing. Now if someone could pay him for it that would be great. “KPFT does pay, but it is public radio,” shares Roark. “I don’t think any radio station would let me come in and do what I do, so I’ll take the pay cut any day to spin records.” Next time you’re at the Grove in Discovery Green and a banquet captain with the smoothest voice is serving you, be sure to say hi. Friday night kicked off the weekend celebration of the Hard Rock Hotel group taking over the remodeled property with the official flag raising followed by a beach party featuring American Idol’s Michael Jones. Two jumbo-sized guitars created an arch marking the entry to the beach party lounge area where a generous buffet flanked the space. A pirate ship stage featured live music all night. Let’s just say, Hard Rock knows how to party. The massive light-filled lobby features the most amazing one-of-a-kind art installation, created with over 3,000 album covers over a 4-day period which when looked at from precise angles, come together to create the image of Santana on his guitar. It’s truly a sight to be seen. As one would expect, rock paraphernalia grace the entire lobby area, from an original Fergie dress to drum sets donated by various artists. And somehow, it’s not outdated and is done in a truly artistic form. The rooms are modern and spacious with a spa-like Jacuzzi® in the room. Meaning not in the bathroom, but right next to the bed. See what I mean by partying like a

rock star? And as if that’s not enough to entice you to lose your inhibitions, make yourself a drink from the full-size, top-shelf bottles turned upside down in true bartender style with spouts that just require you to place your glass under the desired poison and pour. The 42” flat screen TVs are perfect to play music videos as you get dressed for a night out.
STILL NOT CONVINCED? Does the idea of all-inclusive turn you off? Well, there is no skimping on quality here. The food is delicious. From the ceviches we devoured poolside to the Mexican delicacies prepared in their signature restaurant, Frida. And breakfast is just what you would expect from a Mexican resort – sublime. The Hard Rock Hotel is one of only 3 AAA Four-Diamond resorts in the area, with 348 guest rooms. Choose from 6 dining options including The Market for a fresh international buffet featuring local delicacies; Frida for contemporary Mexican fare; Zen for Asian-inspired sushi and teppanyaki; Ciao for Italian fine dining; Pizzeto for wood-burning pizzas; and Ipanema for Brazilian grill. There is a gym, but I rarely saw anyone working out too hard in it. And that might be due to its close proximity to the pool, which is where you should be getting your workout. A team of ambiance animators (so typical of these sorts of resorts) gets the party going early. With dance classes right there in front of sunbathers to volleyball games on the beach or in the pool – there is never a dull moment here. DJ Laz, known as Miami’s No. 1 radio personality, kept us all in party-mode spinning the previous evening’s debaucheries out of our systems. Saturday night a tent was set up on the grounds for the MANA show, which did not disappoint! With celebs like Wilmer Valderama, Joe Manganiello, Real Housewife Taylor Armstong and a bevy of Latin soap stars. This night saw us into the sunrise with an after party featuring the spinnin’ skills of DJ Aliyo and a surprise cameo by Wilmer Valderama.

EING OF MEXICAN DESCENT, WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS THAT A MEXICO CITY BISTRO WOULD BE OPENING UP IN THE SPACE THAT FORMERLY HOUSED A FOOD MART I FREQUENTED OFTEN BACK IN THE DAY, I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
To imagine how they could turn that space into something remotely resembling anything that you would see in Mexico had me baffled. Plus the rumor that the food would be “authentic” had me wondering what would be on their menu in such a case. To take authentic Mexican cuisine, narrow down the plethora of dishes you could make that would appeal to an audience that has queso running through their veins would be a challenge.

Being the prepared customer, I viewed their menu online, read reviews, asked colleagues about their experience. The resounding review was positive.
Apprehensive of the hype, we dropped in right at 5pm for an early dinner. We were seated promptly at a table by the window; had the weather been nice we would’ve sat on their inviting patio that faces Fairview. From their cocktails we had a traditional Paloma and the creative Bandido. The Bandidio, a mix of Sotol (a type of tequila), lemon, chia seeds and Pimm’s #1 makes for an interesting textural and flavor profile. It’s not sweet, not bitter and somehow has a tamarind touch. Their Paloma is perfection. Tequila blanco, lime and grapefruit soda create a refreshing Mexican classic. We typically don’t see them pink in color but it makes for a beautiful presentation. And with the authentic taste, the color is really of no consequence.
The particularly charming, quirky space features stunning murals by artist Cecilia Beaven. On a main dining room wall, the kitchen, little nooks, the bar, even the ceiling, Cecilia’s mesmerizing work will find you seeing new aspects throughout your meal. This, combined with a modern aesthetic and warm touches, is reminiscent of a hip area called La Condesa in Mexico City. It’s where cool
We started with their quesadillas de huitlacoche and the tacos crujientes de Jamaica y queso. Before these came out we were treated to mini Picaditas. Where I’m from, they are like sopes. Thick corn cakes are topped with black refried beans topped with Mexican cream and fresh cotija cheese crumbles. The flavor was spot on with what my grandmother use to make in Guadalajara.
I was raised on these dishes, so to me it was exciting. That said, many of our seasonings and ingredients could be considered acquired tastes. I was intrigued.

3 You can taste the homemade flavor. As we say, it’s casero. Right down to the red salsa served with it that is spicy and you can see the black specs from pan-searing the peppers and tomatoes. I had to peek into the kitchen and nothing is more exciting than seeing muchachas (women) preparing tortillas and more. Don’t expect to see your typical Tex-Mex quesadilla with cheese oozing out between a flour tortilla. Here it’s corn dough, filled with a cheese and huitlachoche (a black mushroom) mixture, and then it’s fried. It’s a crispy, cheesy, savory pocket. The huitlachoche, although black, is very similar to a regular mushroom flavor in earthiness. The tacos cruijientes are similar to a flauta but they too come in the same corn dough, stuffed with a hibiscus flower and mild cheese mixture that is then fried to perfect golden crunchiness. Both are drizzled with authentic Mexican cream. It’s a little more off-white than bright white like the norm. Impressed with all we had started with, we went with the Mula de Nopal and Pollo Adriana. The Pollo Adriana’s presentation, in various colorful little cast iron pots and skillets, is a common theme. You’ll find sides and salsas presented in the same manner. The chicken is cut very thin and stuffed (layered) with calabacita squash and cheese, then covered in a poblano pepper sauce. The homemade mild sauce is ideal, and I even scooped up my rice with it to enjoy it. It’s a deceivingly light dish. I found myself more full from the botanas.
4 The Mula de Nopal is for the adventurous. It’s an acquired taste when it comes to textures and spice. Being Mexican, I’m used to both. Grilled cactus filet is stuffed (more like layered) with panela cheese and mounted on a house salsa. The salsa is a dark rustic red on the adobo or chili de arbol side – it has a definite kick. Panela is a thicker, denser cheese that combined with the nopal provides a balance to its soft texture.

IT’S WHERE COOL MEETS TRADITION.
Should you order a side, you can’t go wrong with equites. This classic Mexican treat is corn kernels mixed with cream, lime, cotija cheese and chili powder. You can’t leave without completing your Mexican culinary experience with a cup of café de olla and buñelos. Café de olla is sweet Mexican coffee served black. It needs nothing more and will be sure to wake “even the devil.” The buñelos are fritters stuffed with a spicy chocolate served with Papantla vanilla ice cream. It’s sweet and savory. With a mild combo like this, it’s easy to finish off. In between the authentic cocktails, casera salsa, tortillas, dishes, the ambience to even the music, this is a real Mexican gem. Go for a cocktail, stay for dinner. There is nothing like this Mexico City bistro. Viva Mexico!

IT’S FAIR TO SAY THAT ERIC RIPERT IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS CHEFS IN THE WORLD. HE HAS BEEN THE EXECUTIVE CHEF AT LE BERNARDIN IN NEW YORK CITY SINCE 1994, BEGAN WRITING BOOKS IN 1998 AND HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS INTO A STAR OF TELEVISION AND NOW STAGE (ALONG WITH ANTHONY BOURDAIN). TELEVISION HAS BROUGHT HIM GREAT RECOGNITION, BUT THE HUB OF HIS EMPIRE IS STILL LE BERNARDIN, WHICH IS WHERE WE SAT DOWN FOR THIS INTERVIEW. DO YOU COOK TO MUSIC? Yeah. Definitely. WHAT KIND OF STUFF? For a long time, I used to put on techno music. House music, techno, and it would give me the rhythm and energy. And then I change, and very often now I listen to jazz and blues. Lately – I don’t know why – I’m into Pink Floyd. I’m like blasting Pink Floyd. I’m an audiophile. IS IT THE LYRICS OR THE RHYTHMS YOU FIND YOURSELF FALLING IN WITH? Because I’m French, obviously, I grew up listening to The Beatles, listening to the Stones and listening to Pink Floyd and so on without necessarily understanding what they were saying. So it was mostly the melodies, and I could be repeating the songs without understanding. I grew up like that until I came to America and I started to learn English in the kitchens. So then, the songs became something different. But still, today, the rhythms are very important, the melodies are very important, and then obviously the lyrics are important to me, but the first thing I’m into is listening to the rhythm, and the composition. Actually, I have a funny story. I was doing one of my cookbooks, A Return To Cooking, which was exploring the four seasons with a painter, photographer and writer, renting different houses, different seasons in different locations, and the book was based on improvisation. One day we were in Vermont in the fall, and I was in that house and I was cooking and some people came to visit the house. This was a rental, so people would come and they came to visit the house with an agent. They came, they spend time in the kitchen, and they watch me. I never saw them, and suddenly I heard a car outside and I said, “Guys, I think someone is coming.” And everybody laughed – because they were leaving, 45 minutes later! YOU JUST TOTALLY ZONED OUT. Totally zoned out. I was into my craft, into my things. To me, it’s like a very grounding experience to cook like that for pleasure at home. Or for friends. Anywhere.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO CALL ANTHONY BOURDAIN? HE MENTIONED YOU IN THE FIRST BOOK. AND THEN YOU CALLED HIM UP FOR LUNCH, RIGHT? I called him up, yeah. When his book came out, it was little bit … first of all, something came out in The New Yorker. BEFORE THE BOOK? Before the book, there was an article in The New Yorker, and it made a big splash in the industry. Everybody was talking about it, about a bad boy describing the kitchens that were all made of pirates and criminals and so on. And the press was reacting a lot to that, and then he wrote the book, and everybody was like, “Oh, my god! It’s scandalous! It’s this, it’s that.” And people came here and said, “You know you are all over his book – I mean, he mentioned you three or four times at least.” So I said, “I have to buy the book!” And I loved the book. And then I called Tony. Because I come from a different world. I had no idea that kitchens are populated with dysfunctional people and pirates and so on. I came from a much more traditional kitchen management in France. So, we discussed those differences, and then the friendship started, and grew, and today we are close friends. I had a good time. The guy’s articulate, he’s smart … I say, “Let’s have a drink another time.” And he said, “Okay, fine.” And one day, I don’t know what reason, we call each other, and we have drinks somewhere and we had a good time again. And, you know, you don’t force those things. You don’t force it. It happens. SO HOW DID THE SHOW COME ABOUT? Tony came up to me and said, “You know I’m doing some gigs all around the country.” And I think he goes to 40 different cities, as a show. And he said, “Would you like to come with me in some of the cities and then we call it something and we have an interaction? Because we have a lot of interaction together and it’s fun, maybe we can do a show with it.” I say, “Okay, why not? I mean I have never done it, but…” And he came up with the idea. He said… well, first of all he came up with the name. He said, “Why don’t we call it ‘Good and Evil’?” And I was kind of like…

WHICH ONE AM I? Yeah – I asked him that question. And he said, “Don’t worry – I play the bad one.” But actually, it’s no such thing as a good one or bad one, ultimately. Last year I think we did 10 cities and this year we’re going to do 12. We start the show by roasting each other, Then, we sit down together on more comfortable chairs and we discuss interesting subjects, like sustainability, GMOs, what’s going on in the industry, what’s relevant and not relevant and things like that. And then we open to the public, and we have question/answer with them. And at the end we end up with a book signing and reception for some of the people. WHEN YOU TRAVEL, IT SEEMS LIKE HE’S ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE OFF THE BEATEN PATH, THE LITTLE TAVERN THAT’S HIDDEN, THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH THAT HAS AN AMAZING DISH. DO YOU THINK THAT’S A ROMANTIC NOTION OR ARE YOU KIND OF LIKE THAT, TOO? I like that, too. But I like this, too. [Waves hands around restaurant.] When I say, “this,” I mean this kind of experience that we deliver to the clientele. I am very passionate about what we do in the kitchen at our level and the quality of the service we have here. I love that, so if I go to a city, I don’t mind to go see someone who’s doing something similar to us in style. But I love the idea of also going with him and going a little bit underground and finding some guys who have talent and can cook some good food and a different vibe, different ambience. So, yeah, I mean, when we are touring together, it’s a mix of dive bars and restaurants that look like this one.

DO YOU SUBSCRIBE TO THE WHOLE SORT OF CELEBRITY CHEF/ROCK STAR KIND OF TROPE? YOU’VE BEEN DOING IT TOO LONG FOR THAT, RIGHT? To me, it doesn’t have an effect on my daily life. Because of the television, because of the magazines and the newspapers and the radio shows and so on. And the festivals all over the country with celebrity chefs and so on … yeah, I am aware that definitely we’re getting a lot of attention, but one thing for sure – it hasn’t changed at all my lifestyle. I am the chef of Le Bernardin and I am available here to anyone. As soon as I get out of Le Bernardin, my private life … I’m not sharing that with the media at all. And then, if I had an opportunity to go on television or something of that sort, I’m media savvy. I’m not shy about it. I like it.
YOU’RE COMFORTABLE WITH IT. I’m comfortable, and I like the idea of sharing my knowledge and cooking wisdom, I guess. I like that, and the more I articulate about what’s going on in my industry, the more I understand myself, and what we’re doing here. So, yeah, the chefs being celebrities … it’s fine, but I tell you one thing – when I leave the restaurant, I don’t have a line of groupies outside! [laughs] When I come to work every morning, walking through Central Park, you know, I’m not signing autographs all the way. DO YOU LIKE THAT, OR IS THAT STRESSFUL TO YOU? No. Nothing is stressful, because you deal with it. Restaurants are ... it’s like walking in quicksand. Nothing is stable, nothing is ever the same. It’s always different. well, it’s not like you have no stress, you are intense about it, but it doesn’t get you to stress. Any situation doesn’t stress me. I find a way to go around it, to make it happen.

So the outside isn’t pretty, but who cares – it’s what’s on the inside that counts. And what’s on the inside that they are dishing out is AWESOME! Their following is ridiculous, to be honest. Just look them up on yelp; not many people have bad things to say. Though they had been mentioned here before, it was a fluke mock trial through a Dos Equis experience. (I said I’d find you and try you again. I made good on that promise!) Parked at one of my favorite go-to spots, Inversion Coffee House, is where I found them on a mild Thursday lunch rush. The line to order never went away from the time I ordered to the time I left. This would be that following I mentioned above. It seemed most people already knew what they were going to have in excitement. I went with the popular fried avocado taco, the famous shorty mac plus their risotto balls. Wrapped in double corn tortillas, spears of fired crunchy avocado are topped with cilantro slaw. It’s a crunchy, creamy surprise. I get the following on this one. It’s a keeper. The shorty mac is short rib shreds with mac n’ cheese sandwiched grilled cheese style. If you get this one, do NOT wait to eat it – eat on site. If you wait, it will make the bread soggy and the whole element is lost. Not the flavor though! The short ribs are tender and lean, perfect for macaroni and cheese. The risotto balls come with a tomato jam, a sweet, cinnamon touch that could be an acquired taste. I preferred the ball sans jam. It’s a crunchy exterior with a velvety, gooey, risotto, cheese center. The risotto balls are $4, while their variety of tacos are from $3-$4. The shorty mac will be $7. All items on their menu are in the $3-$7 range. The serving size you get at these prices is a deal when it comes to the shorty mac and balls. I ordered two tacos and that is an ideal lunch for me. The only remaining clue that this building once housed Chatter’s Café & Bistro is the WIFI name. Former Samba Grille chef David Guerrero stunned Houstonians by announcing his plan for the 3-day transformation and again by actually following through with it, a feat that has only been seen on reality television. THE PERUVIAN HIDEAWAY HIGHLIGHTS GUERRERO’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND THE IMPORTANCE OF COHESIVENESS IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE RESTAURANT, FROM THE LOGO TO THE LAYOUT AND CUISINE. After walking inside and being greeted by a life-size human torso statue, you are immediately drawn to the casual and approachable surroundings that translate into the food as well. While I am no Peruvian princess well versed in foreign food, Guerrero serves up dishes that are exotic and fresh, but not intimidating enough to make you second-guess what you’re eating. I had the Pescado Saltado Nikkei, a dish that incorporates corvine, red onion, tomatoes, oyster sauce, soy sauce, tamarind, sesame oil, green onions, sesame seeds, fried potatoes and white rice into a sleek pescado saltado nikkei black bowl. The presentation was incredibly welcoming, and only after I finished the entire bowl did I realize exactly why it was so delicious: the unique combination of ingredients and Peruvian touch. I also had the Pionono, a vanilla sponge cake, dulce de leche, hazelnuts, lemon, roccoto gele and caramel sea salt ice cream for dessert. The caramel sea salt ice cream was the perfect combination of sweet and salty with chunks of hidden caramel inside the undoubtedly creamy treat. Guerrero takes great pride in his work. Translated from Spanish, “alma” means “soul,” which makes complete sense after my –Jordan Campbell dining experience.
OPENING ITS FIRST LOCATION INSIDE THE LOOP IN THE SPACE FORMERLY KNOWN AS PESCE, BRIO AIMS TO IMPRESS WITH NOT ONLY ITS BEAUTIFUL EXPANSIVE SPACE BUT ALSO ITS DENSE MENU. There is no shortage of space (unless you are there for the wildly popular happy hour deals) or shortage of food when we are talking serving sizes. I had been warned but nothing prepared me for my shock at the size of my beef carpaccio appetizer. It was presented in a serving dish one would use at a dinner party – enough to feed a table of four to five. Needless to say, I shared with the rest of the table. Notables from our meal included their Pasta a la Vodka and Pasta Fra Diavolo. We ordered one split which will take the serving size down to something more manageable if you are inclined to not take home leftovers; otherwise, you are presented a heap of pasta that covers your plate. The Pasta a la Vodka has delicate ricotta-filled handmade pasta with crispy pancetta, garlic, basil in a spicy tomato Parmesan cream sauce. The delicate pasta with ricotta and velvety sauce make for a luxurious combination to the palette. The Pasta Fra Diavolo with penne in a spicy tomato cream sauce with green onions and your choice of either shrimp or chicken is a lighter take on a cream sauce compared to the Pasta a la Vodka. Plus the spicy factor is mild. Although similar in some aspects, each provides a different flavor profile. Like we mentioned above, their happy hour is popular. And who would expect less when you can taste what they have to offer for a mere $3.95 a dish on a limited menu plus $5 beverage options. Their bar brings the outside in with large functioning windows that are kept open weather permitting. With happy hour from 3-7pm Monday through Friday plus a reverse happy hour starting at 9pm, get there early or stay there late. If you’re looking for a place to fill your belly, feel like you got your money’s worth in not only food but also attention, Brio is the place.

FINALLY, THE HOT SUMMER HEAT IS EASING OFF! HOWEVER, WITH THE COOL FRONT ON ITS WAY, IT BRINGS THE COLD AND FLU SEASON AS WELL. JUST ABOUT ANY HEALTH ARTICLE WILL TELL YOU THAT DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, A WELL-BALANCED DIET RICH IN VITAMINS AND ADEQUATE SLEEP WILL KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG, WARDING OFF ILLNESS. BUT, WHAT THESE ARTICLES DO NOT MENTION IS WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU DO GET SICK. I must say, that while I am good about staying active and eating right, every now and then I neglect my sleep. A few weeks ago, my lack of sleep hit hard when I woke up with a sore throat, which turned into a nasty two-week long cold. While I am a firm believer in resting and healing your body, I also cannot stand to lie in a bed all day. It was time I figured out what I could do workout wise. In my search for workout tips while sick, I found out that not only can you work out when sick with a cold, but that it is actually encouraged, and can help boost the immune system, so long as you listen to your body and do not overstrain. Laying off the weights and highintensity workouts are ideal for giving your body the energy it needs to recover from illness. Especially, if you are using decongestants, which can already raise your heart rate, you want to be extra careful not to get your
heart pumping too hard. However, 25-35 minutes of high-incline brisk walks, elliptical, stationary bike and slow jogs are good alternatives until you have fully recovered. Also, be sure to drink extra water, as your body needs to keep super-hydrated in order to keep fighting off those harmful “bugs.” Add Emergen-C packets to water to add extra vitamins. Keeping with the all-natural fruits, vegetables and lean proteins will give your body just the nutrients it needs to recover. Since my taste buds were virtually nonexistent when I was sick, it was very easy and I preferred to keep my meals simple. Try steaming some brown rice with bok choy, edamame and thinly sliced carrots in a low sodium vegetable broth. Add some boiled shrimp or steamed chicken breast pieces and a touch of soy sauce. Now you have a simple soup filled with all the essentials!

SERIOUSLY, HOW IS IT NOVEMBER?! I don’t even want to say it but before we know it, it will be 2013. That is, of course, unless the world ends in December. Then you only have this month and just a couple weeks in December to knock that bucket list out! Here’s to hoping the Mayan’s had a moment of dyslexia/illiteracy. My favorite day of feasting is upon us, Thanksgiving. And personally my favorite place to feast is at mom’s house. Through the years she has perfected turkey while dad has mastered the mashed potatoes. I have yet to find my calling but I’m one hell of a taste-tester! So while you get into the turkey day mood, I have a couple hostess/gift giving suggestions and a whole bunch of reminiscing at oldie but greaties! Happiest of Thanksgivings to you and yours…because this may be the last! KIDDING! KIDDING! *Note: Last month I mentioned garage-style windows at Mongoose vs. Cobra. Apparently I had one too many Moscow Mules because that is hogwash. They do have an expansive wall of windows, not of the garage style type. Now, you’ll have to go so you can make fun of me.

I make my own at home and this is the first time I have seen a restaurant (outside of a taco truck) recreate said dish. It is incredibly easy to make and Max’s manages to take it up a notch to gourmet. Buttery corn kernels are layered with Valentina aioli, cotija cheese, chili powder and lime juice in a glass. In Mexico, this delicacy sold on the street can be found all times of the day, any day of the week. It is a staple. You will see corn in a whole new light.

Huge patios adorn the front, back and side of the old house but they now include plenty of outdoor seating which is primo for enjoying the virtues of fall. They even have just the right amount of TVs hung in all the right places for your viewing pleasure. Cornhole, shuffleboard and oversized Jenga® will keep you busy during commercials, halftime or, honestly, anytime. Chris Berman or cornhole? That’s an easy one. The inside actually looks like an icehouse! A huge bar with plenty of seating takes up much of the front area. Tables and chairs are scattered all over the rest of the inside, including an area that might as well be your living room – couches, coffee tables and arm chairs. Yeah, pretty much your living room, except with a full bar right across from it. Luke’s also has garage-style doors which open up to let the outside in, an essential part of a true icehouse. While you are here, we think you will find Luke’s has some very friendly employees. They honestly seemed happy to be working and were mixing and mingling with all the patrons. Luke’s management seems to grasp the importance of a happy customer. And those customers? Bikers sitting next to frat boys. A table of tough guys.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Tables full of a coed softball team. Old couple making out. Groups on an extended after-work happy hour. A table of angry Cowboys fans. Even a few kids during our recent Monday Night Football® trip to Luke’s. College football fan? We hear Luke’s is the home of the ESPN 97.5 UT Longhorn game day viewing party every Saturday the Horns play. Not a Horn? Certainly not a problem. Any given Saturday (Sunday, or any day), Luke’s welcomes all! No good icehouse exists without beer, and plenty of it. Luke’s had up to 18 beers on tap, many of them Texas in origin, during our visit. Bottles lined up behind the bar proudly display the non-draft options. There sure were a lot of liquor bottles behind the bar as well. The menu listing specialty drinks under ‘Luke’s Martinis’ and ‘Luke’s Patio Coolers’ looks like fun. Next time we come back we’ll try the ‘Adios MF’ and one of those fancy ‘Corona sticking out of a frozen margarita’ concoctions. Luke’s has a kitchen, and the food – it’s a touchdown. They offer a decent selection of standard bar-type food, but it’s much better than your average icehouse throws at you. Luke’s likes the burger, but they also have wraps for the health-conscious, and various tacos are a menu special of late. Looking to try something other than the norm? Plenty of options, though we hear the ‘sticky finger sandwich, hot’ is the way to go! Luke’s is open every day 11am–2am. They also seem to have drink specials every day. Examples include Luke loving the ladies on Wednesday. And don’t miss the Hangover Brunch on Sunday; if you are going to get up early for that first NFL game you might as well have some good food too. We’re confident even the replacement refs could make this call – Luke’s is a welcome addition to the Houston bar scene.

EVENT A GOLDEN HISTORY, A SHINING FUTURE WHY TEXAS HEART INSTITUTE 50TH ANNIVERSARY WHERE WESTIN GALLERIA WHEN SEPTEMBER 18 A celebrated evening recognizing world-renowned Texas Heart Institute at its 50th Anniversary attracted an A-list of dignitaries. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton acknowledged the significant anniversary with a video message aired during the evening’s program. Civic, medical and political leadership from across the state were in attendance, including Governor Rick Perry, U.S Representative Sheila Jackson Lee and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, to name a few. Lyle Lovett, along with fiddler Luke Bulla, shocked the crowd with a surprise performance worthy of a standing ovation.
