love this month. Besides the fact that it happens to be my birthday month and most Leos by nature are just happy (I happen to know a lot of Leos), I love that a month that I grew up disliking – because there was nothing to do and everyone was out of town which was bad for birthday parties – has evolved.
Granted it is the end of summer break, but by this point most of us are ready to get back to normal and are looking forward to fall. It’s also restaurant month so get ready to do some serious eating in a serious foodie town. As people get back into the swing of things, we’ll be spending more time at home and, coincidentally, featured on the cover is a gorgeous Houston home. We’re happy to share the interior as well as the local husband and wife duo who created some of the furniture in the shoot.
We were inspired by back to school in our roundup of favorite backpacks for kids and adults. Check out our picks on page 52. And although Dixie Friend Gay’s colorful mosaic was created for kids, adults will stare in awe as well. Contributing writer Nadia Michel catches up with the artist at last month’s inauguration of the installation on page 32. Currently, I’m obsessed with the newly opened Adara Medical Spa across the street from the Children’s Museum. The zen-like space is the perfect backdrop for any treatment. In a matter of minutes unfamiliar faces melted into new friends – pretty sure our faces did melt as we (and by “we” I mean 5 ladies) carried a gorgeous but oh so heavy table by Rojas Artistic Designs as a prop for the shoot. To say time was of the essence would be no exaggeration at all. With a start time of 4pm and an art exhibit taking place in this beautiful home at 7pm the team was put into action and the pressure was on. The results were enchanting. Blacksmith expanded its menu to offer more items. The menu, created by Underbelly Chef Chris Shepherd, features some of his favorite ingredients and dishes. The chicken cabbage salad from Underbelly’s lunch menu is served at Blacksmith on a croissant as a sandwich. A grilled cheese sandwich made with mozzarella and pesto on an English muffin is served with a side of tomato soup. There are four sides to choose from: cucumber salad with fish sauce, a summer salad, farro salad with olive oil and citrus, and steel cut oats with granola. There are coffee specials on the menu until further notice: café sua da, a classic Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk; the mango lassi at Himalaya is made with cold brewed coffee milk, which is turned into a drinkable yogurt; and indulgent coffee float with Cloud 10 half-and-half ice cream.
Hyatt Regency Houston Executive Chef Frank Majowicz created an outdoor Urban Garden on the hotel’s 6th floor pool deck. “While local farmers markets are great, we realized the best way to get the freshest ingredients for our restaurants and banquets is with our own garden,” he shared. The garden is sprouting vegetables and seasonings (including fresh zucchini, lemon grass, rosemary, squash, peppers, basil and more) which are used in the cuisine in the hotel’s iconic Spindletop revolving rooftop restaurant, Shula’s Steak House and in banquets.

My mom’s enchiladas and my dad’s BBQ are some of my favorite dishes. IS THERE A FOOD YOU WON’T EAT? Every year at Break the fast, I have to eat gefilte fish and I have yet to really enjoy it. Maybe I just need to eat it at Kenny and Ziggy’s. I’m always willing to try anything once; I really try to give everything a chance. WHAT IS YOUR COMFORT FOOD? This is a tough question. I have two, oysters and tacos. Oysters are just fantastic; they’re buttery and briny and sweet and there are so many different varieties. Plus they go really great with any adult beverage. Tacos are just awesome and just a feel-good food. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE NEXT FOOD TREND? I can’t tell you what the next trend will be but I can tell you what the trend is now – OYSTERS, OYSTERS, OYSTERS!!! Which is great for me.

SPICY, HEARTY HOME COOKIN’ VIETNAMESE STYLE DUA VIETNAMESE HOME COOKING IN A MODERN SETTING

TRIED SOMETHING NEW THE OTHER NIGHT. WENT TO DUA DOWN ON WESTHEIMER, WHERE MO MONG USED TO BE. IN FACT, IT’S UNDER THE SAME OWNERSHIP AS THE OLD PLACE, WHICH I ENJOYED AS A DATE SPOT OR FOR A GROUP POURING AT HAPPY HOUR. PORK BELLY SPRING ROLLS Dua, which is touted as Vietnamese Home Cooking and opened back in February, feels a little different than Mo Mong. But it’s still got the cool factor. The structure of the place is essentially the same, so the bar downstairs is still equipped to serve up the full range of libations. Thursdays are the hot happy hour nights with $3 specials on frozen cocktails. But this was Tuesday, and my purpose on this night was to dig into the tasty grub. And I was richly rewarded. The first thing I got my lips on was some spring rolls. I mean it’s Vietnamese food, right? This is a staple. Now on this night they had pork belly spring rolls, which are not normally on the menu. Of course I immediately felt special.

More so after my first bite. I expected the lettuce and cucumber and carrots to be crisp and fresh, and they were. But the pork belly...mmm-mmmmmmore about the twice-cooked pork belly later. I also was treated to some tasty yellow vermicelli noodles with pork patties. Imagine if you cut a ham steak into short, French-fry-sized sticks. Now this was a salty treat. I had to be careful, though. It would be easy to munch on this for a time while chatting with friends. I mean, the noodles are light and the ideal medium for the salty pork. But I needed to save room for several more home-cooking delights that were headed my way. Caramelized shrimp was next. These were perfectly prepared prawns wallowing in a rich, deep orange-colored sauce with some white onions keeping them company.

TWICE COOKED CARMELIZED PORK BELLY WITH EGGS
Lemongrass curry chicken was oh-my. Spicy. Not set-your-hair-on-fire spicy, but enough to make my nose run a little. And it’s covering some dark meat chicken, which is my preference. This is where I completely get the “home cooking” reference. This is the kind of dish, if I had it at home, I’d likely keep eating ’til I slipped into a lemongrass coma on the couch. Finally, we have the twice-cooked pork belly with a twice-cooked egg. Man. I’m pretty sure I chewed the pork, but it seemed like it just slipped over the taste buds and slid gracefully to my very happy tummy. Can you say “tender”? The egg appeared unusual to me. I asked Lisa, the general manager and culinary goddess who prepared my meal, how she prepared the egg. Boiled, peeled, then cooked with the pork bellies. So it was quite flaky and flavorful. Another serious comfort food I could’ve consumed until it hurt. Everything was scrumptious, and reasonably priced, too, so all signs point to me returning on a regular basis. If this were my home cookin’ I might never leave the house.

In California, restaurants that do “small plates” are all the rage. From Sonoma to San Diego, you’ll find small plates in Spanish tapas bars to Japanese izakayas and farm-to-table Californian cuisine. Here in Houston, we haven’t fully embraced the phenomenon yet, but Dosi, the new Korean small plates restaurant, is betting that we will. Located on the bustling strip of Shepherd just south of Westheimer, the ambitious new restaurant is sleek and modern. With a minimalist, angular, grey concrete facade you might mistake for an exclusive nightclub when you drive by, this is a restaurant for a fun-loving, metropolitan crowd. A long community table runs the length of the dining room, a place where you can gather with friends over shared nosh while enjoying soju cocktails. Soju, a type of Korean vodka made of rice, wheat and barley, is the drink of choice in Korea. At Dosi, soju is infused with different fruits – you’ll see a wall filled with glass canning jars when you step into the restaurant – which can be sampled individually, as a flight or in a cocktail.

I highly recommend the “Melondipity,” a refreshing summertime cocktail made of infused mint soju with watermelon and lime. From the kitchen, Executive Chef Jordan Asher and sous chef Daniel Toro are offering beautifully plated dishes that look and taste amazSoju infusions ing. You can tell that attention has been paid to how the plate looks when it arrives at your table: Crispy green kale and tapioca chips are served on black slate; an exquisite tomato salad is served on tan-colored porcelain; playful strips of wagyu beef topped with cilantro and sorrel arrive assembled in the shape of a square on wood oval plate. A shrimp and rice porridge dish, an homage to Southern shrimp and grits, exhibited creamy textures and impeccable seasoning. I didn’t try the signature bo ssam (Korean lettuce wraps) because I absolutely had to have their Korean fried chicken (KFC). Tempura fried and coated in a spicy red sauce with a side of sweet pickled radish, the KFC was the major bomb-diggity, a version worth craving and the best you’ll find.

Looking for a new place to hang out in the Museum District? Try Bosta, the new coffee and wine bar by the group that brought you Cloud 10 Creamery. Prominently located on the bottom floor of the newly constructed commercial building on Binz, just down the street from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Houston Children’s Museum, the new cafe is spacious and airy, with a stripped down industrial/warehouse vibe, floor to ceiling windows, a patio area, plush leather couches and banquette seating along the far wall. Designed to be a casual neighborhood eatery, Bosta is open daily from 7am to midnight. Stop in the morning for scratch-made muffins, biscuits or pound bread made by culinary director and pastry chef Chris Leung. Or, order a bigger breakfast, like their Frenchie-inspired croque monsieur, an open-faced sandwich with ham, gruyere and mornay (a béchamel with cheese). While you’re at it, grab a cup of joe. The coffee program was set

up by Greenway Coffee; and with veteran barista Michelle Dinh at its helm, you’re sure to get an excellent cup of java. Come afternoon, visit to grab a sandwich and Bosta maybe a glass of wine. A friend and I stopped by for a late lunch, grabbing a seat at the bar while we noshed on hot panini sandwiches created by chef/partner Justin Basye. Of the seven Italian-inspired options (including two vegetarian), I got the one with the Trastevere proscuitto, arugula, scamorza Italian cow’s milk cheese and a fig-mustard spread. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the ice cream from Cloud 10 Creamery, which you can order by the scoop or in one of the specialty sundaes. And come nighttime, when you want to unwind, you can do so with a glass of vino while munching wooden board laden with salumi, olives and cheese. If they have it available, make sure to order their imported Spanish jamon Iberico. The whole leg will be on display on the counter, and you can watch as they shave slices off the prized ham by hand.

Would it keep its name without its namesake chef? Would it close indefinitely? Would it re-open as a new concept? After several months of renovation, the Tuna flatbread space formerly known as Philippe has been revamped and relaunched with a fresh new identity: Table on Post Oak. Downstairs, the lounge area has been expanded to include an attractive, long bar area where patrons can partake of drinks and bar bites. There’s also one of the most well-appointed patios in the city—beautifully lit under a bright red awning, with red accents and deep chocolate brown furnishings, and enclosed by lush foliage, perfect for a romantic dinner alfresco. Upstairs, the decor is largely the same, but less formal. The wine and cocktail list comes on an iPad®, which you can peruse to see pictures of the cocktail and get wine pairing suggestions before you buy. The menu, created by newly minted Executive Chef Manuel Pucha, is the kind that you can revisit again and again. His signature dish, for instance, is something you won’t find anywhere else in the city: A salad of lump crab in a sauce of creamy ponzu sauce, the “Ponzu crab” is a sensory delight. Tufts of white crabmeat are plated in vertical chunks within a shallow bowl, so that you scoop each piece up with a spoon. With avocado, jalapeno and cherry tomatoes, each bite is tangy and fragrant, with contrasting textures. “It combines French technique with Asian flavors and ingredients from my Latin heritage,” says Pucha. “I’ve been dreaming about this menu all my life.” Other menu highlights include the tuna flatbread, in which tuna is flattened into thin sheets and placed on top of a lightly fragrant lemon aioli on paper-thin lavash bread—simple and delicious. Seared duck breast, in a soy-tea broth, is also noteworthy, as is the hearty and flavorful, forktender short rib osso bucco.

Yet another all-star bar situated on the block downtown that just won’t stop, The Honeymoon took over the large corner spot on Main and Congress after an extensive renovation, including moving the Boomtown roasting operations into the space. Most of the north wall is windows allowing lots of natural light during your morning toddy mocha. At night, the rich dark wood bar, candlelit tables, sheer curtains and open spaces make for a very inviting evening hangout practically begging you to grab a table or couch and stay a while. We’ll say the renovation set them up to be the spot any time of the day. No need to focus on the coffee in this bar review, we promise it’s awesome (service beginning every day at 7am). It’s a foregone conclusion the bar drinks are going to be good too. Start with a beer or some well chosen wines and bubbles. Coffee cocktails are on the

menu too because why the heck not. The real treat? A cocktail list from friend and neighbor Justin Burrow (of Bad News Bar). Going with the atmosphere of The Honeymoon, the drink list of course has some clean classic favorites. Other options include such greats as the Corpse Reviver no. 2s, which Juliet sure could have used – you will have to bring yourself back to life with one instead. The Honeymoon experience wouldn’t be complete without food, and it’s in the works with a consulting chef-driven menu set to come out of the kitchen soon (probably serving by the time this prints, so ask for a menu!).

OSSILS AND FISH ARE NOT WHAT ONE MIGHT EXPECT TO SEE IN NORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST SKATE PARK, BUT ARTIST DIXIE FRIEND GAY THOUGHT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THE LANDSCAPE OF BOWLS, RUNS AND RAMPS AT SPRING SKATE PARK NEEDED. “THE NATURAL WORLD IS WHERE I FIND MY SPIRITUAL CENTER,” SHE EXPLAINS. The 26-foot-long mosaic she created for the park is just about 19 inches high, perfect for tiny explorers. “It is very colorful and very textural,” she says of the mural, which is in Dylan’s Park, a section adjacent to the skate park and dedicated to children with special needs. The area is designed to engage children who are sight impaired, hearing impaired, autistic or wheelchair-bound. Dylan’s Park is named after an area child who was severely injured and later died from child abuse. Gay has been working on the 3D high fire ceramic, fused glass and smalti tiles in her studio for over a year to create the mural and a 5’ x 5’ mosaic sign. Gay also designed the park’s main gate, featuring an armadillo. “The armadillo is armored, just like skaters who have to wear protective gear,” she says of the reference. The corten steel gate is intended to rust naturally, attaining a coppery patina. “I used to weld, but now I design on digital files,” Gay tell us. Welders assemble the final product according to her specifications. Located on a 10-acre site along Kuykendahl Road near Interstate 45, the skate park is the second largest in the world. It includes a competition-scale Texas bowl featuring a full pipe, 12-foot vert ramp, 10-foot bowl, banked walls and speed hips, plus a couple of backyard-style pools and three flow bowls. A section designed to emulate the street-skating experience has ledges, rails, benches, banks, quarter pipes and stair obstacles.
Gay is no stranger to large-scale art installation in public spaces. Her work can be seen along the Houston METRO North Line, on airport walls in Houston, Dallas and Indianapolis, Sam Houston State University and Texas A&M

Galveston. In the works is the Lake-ness Monster, a 16ft-high and 30ft-long mosaic dragon-like creature to be displayed in an Austin area park. She is also working on a large welded heron for Oso Park in Corpus Christi. Her work will be the subject of a special exhibit, Dixie Friend Gay: Evolution of Public Projects, at the Beeville Art Museum, opening January 24, 2014.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON www.camh.org Don’t miss More Real Than Reality Itself bringing together single-, multi-channel and installation-based video works by four artists who breathe new life into the medium’s familiar documentary parameters. YOU’RE FLYING TO NEW YORK TOMORROW? Yes! I’ve been trying to get everything packed. My flight leaves at like five in the morning, so I may be reaching that point of not going to sleep at all. CAN YOU SLEEP ON FLIGHTS? That’s all I do. It’s almost involuntary for me. It’s crazy. As soon as they start pressurizing the cabin, I’m outta there. [laughs] AND THEN DO YOU CARRY OVER THE ENERGY FROM TRAVELING INTO THE SHOW? YOUR SHOW’S TOMORROW, RIGHT? Really, once you get on stage, you don’t remember that you haven’t slept in two days. Until you get back off the stage again, and you remember that your knee’s busted. [laughs] Once you hit the stage, it’s easy to forget all that. HOW DO YOU WRITE? I have GarageBand on my iPad®, so I can do it in the hotel if the mood strikes and I just gotta get something out. Usually, though, the travel kind of comes in spurts. Like this month it’s really heavy travel, but we don’t leave town again until October. So then I’ve got lots of time in between to take care of stuff at home. Write, rehearse and all that stuff.

WERE YOU GETTING INTO MUSIC BEFORE YOU WERE SINGING? I think I was always a fan of writing. I was a fan of the lyrics. Betty Wright was one of my all-time favorites. That’s because she had these stories. So I’m getting in trouble because I’m listening to all these blues singers and these stories are so funny, they’re so interesting, but my mom was like, “You can’t be listenin’ to that! You’re too young!” But it was so fascinating to me. And then after I went to my first live show, I was like, “Okay, I wanna do this. This is what I wanna do.” WELL, NOBODY ELSE WAS USING THAT NAME ANYMORE. I would hope not. But yeah! When we would tour for the summers and stuff — the first group was singing, like hip-hop R&B — the second group was pop. So it required me to dance a lot, which I’m terrible at. So I had to rely really heavy on my vocal talent and my writing ability, because I was really hoping that nobody would notice that I could not dance. That was all before graduating high school. It’s been a while.

WHAT KIND OF STUFF WERE YOU SINGING WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED? I was in this girl group called N-tyse, which was made up of my big sister, her best friend and my best friend. We were like hip-hop and R&B, and I was one of the lead singers. We were like 14, and we were actual professionals. We were opening up for artists, we were traveling. My mom was our manager, and my best friend’s mom, and I was writing songs for us. Even today I can remember lyrics to some of those songs. It was hilarious. It was me and my best friend, and we would write the songs and sing them. It was really fun. And then when I left that group, I joined another group called Entyse, ironically enough. WHEN DID YOU FIND THE DIRECTION THAT TOOK YOU WHERE YOU ARE NOW? It started to take shape after the group. I started getting really into like the Erykah Badus and the Jill Scotts and all of that really heavily musical work. Even in high school, because I went to HSPVA, so it was getting in there and being around all those amazing jazz singers and jazz musicians. Hearing all of that it was like, “Oh, man — all these complex chord structures…” There was so much more to music than what I’d been exposed to up until that point. And so by expanding that way, I was like, “Okay, I wanna see what else there is.” What other kind of music, what other kind of genres. So I just kind of started diving into other kinds of stuff. SO WHAT OTHER KIND OF GENRES? One of my favorite artists is Feist. I love “Twice” by Little Dragon. My favorite song in the whole world. I don’t know what it is about that song or why that song makes me want to bawl my eyes out, but it is the most beautiful song in the world to me. I sing it as a cover, and I sing it in places where people have no idea who Little Dragon is, and people will be like, “That’s such a great song! Did you write that song?” And I tell them who it is, and they’re like, “I would never listen to that!” And I’m like, “I know. We’ve gotta expand our horizons.” www.alyciamiles.com

By taking it to the yoga mat, we are able to integrate what we’ve been discussing or “workshopping” in a way that helps us to feel it in our bodies. For example, if one of the things that you’ve learned during Rock Your Bliss is that your main core value is freedom and you’d like to feel that,
you can try that on in your yoga practice. It truly lands and anchors the work in your body, integrating the mind and the matter. Using your mat as your mini-universe to practice how you operate off of it. It is very powerful work, and we love to keep it playful at the same time. HOW DID YOU TWO GET TOGETHER FOR THESE WORKSHOPS? Jacki – We were sitting on the beach at O’ahu last February chatting about our goals, sipping a piña colada and dreaming big. I shared with Mary Beth how the practices from my own coaching work have really started to show up

FOUNDED IN 1908, Bellaire (with a population of 16,855 as of the 2010 Census) in southwest Harris County is run by a city manager style of government. From the historic Bellaire streetcar still displayed to awardwinning schools including Episcopal High School, HISD’s Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School in the Gordon Elementary School building to Pin Oak School – this is one diverse city within the city. One of the most amazing shows of community support is the evolution of Teas Nursery which closed in 2010, when the Rubenstein family foundation bought the property, donating it to become Evelyn’s Park. As of print, Phase One directed by the 8member board of the Evelyn’s Park Conservancy is complete, with construction slated for end of the year. www.evelynspark.org With public pools, parks like the Ross Pitman Park and the Nature Discovery Center and even one of the city’s most elaborately decorated Christmas homes, Bellaire is a gem that makes Greater Houston so unique.

NEIGHBORHOOD INSIDER – Ann Moore is married to Mark McCullough, they have two teenaged daughters and they have lived in Bellaire 27 years. What I like best about living in Bellaire is that I live in a small town, though we are surrounded by Houston. There is a real sense of community and the ability to participate in local government. Living in Bellaire also means that all of the great places to work, play and dine in Houston are easy to reach. Bellaire has changed so much in 27 years. Most of the small bungalows have been torn down and large houses built. Many of the trees have suffered and died due to the construction. I believe that there needs to be more effective protection of Bellaire’s mature trees.

Wellness Picks: Every guest here gets his or her own bike
(if you’re a repeat guest, it will even bear a personalized license plate) so it’s easy to keep active and explore the island, which includes an organic garden and secluded strips of beach. Set in the heart of the property, the Spa features nest-like treatment huts (some tucked between treetops, others along the water), where therapists perform treatments like massages done with heated mineral sand poultices body scrubs/wraps done with coconut, honey and papaya. Of course, the water plays a big part of the active life here: Guests can go out on guided dives, take up catamaran sailing and surf on the famous Ying Yang break, set just near the resort. Don’t miss a dinner at the Chili Table in the organic garden, during which the whole menu will feature produce, including fresh chilies, grown on property. SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY, OMAN: Though officially part of Oman, the Musandam peninsula which juts out into the Persian Gulf is surrounded by land that belongs to the United Arab Emirates, making it an exclave that’s separated from the rest of its country. This feeling of isolation sets the tone for the Six Senses Zighy Bay resort on the tip of the peninsula; though just a couple hours’ drive from cosmopolitan Dubai, the place feels like a true hideaway, tucked between a wall of rocky mountains and a sandy, Gulf-side beach. The resort itself has been designed to look like a traditional Omani fishing village, with the architecture blending into the environment and the rooms and suites grouped into “neighborhoods.” It’s really a world unto itself – making it no surprise that it’s a favorite with privacy-seeking celebs.

SIX SENSES NINH VAN BAY, VIETNAM WELLNESS PICKS “First, there’s that whole paragliding thing.” Guests of Zighy Bay can choose to glide into the main resort from the top of Zighy Mountain, strapped to the hotel’s on-staff paragliding pro. You can do this any time during your stay, though many choose to do it upon arrival, taking “making a grand entrance” to a whole other level. Other mountain-based activities including hiking, mountain biking or taking a 4x4 up through the hills and salt flats for a sunset drink. The great room in Rocio Diaz and Francisco Zorilla’s home just outside the I-610 loop is a spectacularly scaled living space, replete with a 34-foot domed ceiling. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a soaring backyard bordering the bayou, setting the tone for this unexpected retreat in the heart of the city’s hustle and bustle. But the fabulous cabin in the woods feeling goes beyond the backyard. The 15,000sf lot is extended by a treed easement belonging to the city, giving the home a kind of borderless appeal usually only found in country abodes. “It makes the lot feel much bigger,” Diaz says. august 14 | www.002mag.com .61

An architect by trade and an interior designer by default, Diaz designed the unique home from the outside in. “Even though I usually don’t think in any particular style when I do a project, I think this house will fit in what some designers call industrial chic,” Diaz says. Stylishly clad in a Celine t-shirt and black horn pendant necklace, her eye for what is chic is equally evident throughout the home. Walls clad in concrete-like panels complement wide-plank Canadian Pine floors, while Venetian black and white mosaic ceramic tiles by La Nova define the kitchen area, offsetting the heavily masculine vibe with a delicately geometric pattern. Fancy tile work is repeated on shower floors throughout the home, with various animal-print patterns rendered in the utmost modern way. “I like this the best,” Diaz says of her son’s bathroom, featuring a leopard pattern and black-tiled walls. It is telling of Diaz’s fearlessness with this project: When all the design world seems to be headed for white everything, Diaz bucked the trend with aplomb, using black plumbing fixtures in the powder room and matte black tiles as a kitchen backsplash. Black walls are used throughout the home to create contrast, and all around the media room, in which the windows strategically face north and are shaded by trees. “Surprisingly, not a lot of builders consider the orientation of a home when they are building, but it’s so important,” says Uriel Ghelman, Chief Operating Officer of Habitat Construction, the company behind the build. “It helps conserve energy and allows for better lighting.”

Lighting is a vital element in Diaz’s design. In addition to floodlights and wall lights placed in unusual but strategic patterns, she incorporated lighting into the floor in the kitchen and foyer areas, in the form of long rectangular built-in enclaves. “At night, the lighting in here is amazing,” she says. For a little whimsy, their children Maria, 13, and Geronimo, 8, have tiny circular floodlights clustered on the ceiling of their bedrooms, creating a starlight effect. In the master bedroom and great room, pendants are clustered in two’s and three’s, including black, oversized Random pendants over the kitchen bar and an original Ingo Maurer’s Zettel paper notes chandelier in her office. “I’ve installed this pendant at least three times over the years,” Diaz says of the beloved fixture. What truly sets the home apart is its structure, a far departure from Houston’s residential status quo. “In Mexico, especially in Puebla (where Diaz and Zorilla come from), there are a lot more modern homes,” says Ghelman. “This is the most unique house we’ve built here.” Ghelman points to the various hoops the company had to jump through in order to complete the project, which was initially slated to take one year to complete, but is now just about two years in the making on the eve of its completion. “We had to get special permits for everything.”

The edgy, hand-forged pieces blur the lines between art and furniture and have garnered a following amongst collectors, including Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. “Victor hand-forges everything; he fires it and hammers everything out by hand. The only machine he uses is an angle cutter,” Jessica explains.
Victor Rojas’ Surgical Floor Lamp is fabricated from an original surgery lamp from the 1950’s, while the designer’s Sideways Rocker is made of steel with reclaimed leather. Cast in hand-poured aluminum, Angel Wing Chair is a recurring favorite. “It’s an angelic piece that denotes a sense of innocence, and it is very complementary to a lot of different styles – it could go anywhere,” muses Jessica.
In the showroom, collected vintage pieces like a patchwork hide a floor rug made in the late 1960’s, and Italian chairs by Piero Lissoni sit alongside Rojas original designs, like the Red Industrial Foundry form on a base. “We play a lot with things. We have an airplane engine table with French Victorian chairs – we don’t put ourselves in a box.”

THE WHO: Waldo’s left and Boulevard Coffee is the new. After a renovation and the addition of a huge patio (City of Houston dog-friendly), the crowds have been showing up regularly. Dog lovers, Heights trail walkers and runners, single friends catching up, families, wi-fi fans, lovers of freshly baked cakes, surfers (check out the table), fans of UFC (yes, there were two dudes watching UFC on a tablet) and Heights residents. For the most part, a lot of normal people which is a nice change. THE BREW: Boulevard Coffee uses local fave, Katz coffee. Espresso drinks during our visit were being pulled with Katz Velvet Espresso, and our iced latte was good. The usual iced and hot drinks are available with a few unique offerings being the frozen chai-nana and the dirty chai latte. Tea, a cooler full of drinks and Italian cream sodas keep those abstaining from coffee from being left out. THE FOOD: We mentioned the cake, but there are also fresh pastries, cookies and other baked surprises too. Two cases full. Sinful Bakery cookies are available for you vegans. Cinnamon buns, muffins and a breakfast croissant serve the morning crowd. Boulevard also has paninis available to keep afternooners from having only freshly baked cake to eat.
