I get to work with an amazing team monthly including these goofballs (who are super professionals) on location at Caracol.

H

ow is it June already? This year has flown by and we are smack dab in the middle of it. As of print deadline (which is kind of mid-May to give you an idea) we’ve been spared the blazing Houston heat we are so known for, and this 5+ month preggo mama is not complaining!

In that vein, the weather could not be better for getting on a bike! It doesn’t matter if you are an avid rider, a recreational cyclist, a true racer or a beginner.

Digital Editor Batli, who’s in her 20s, got on a bike for the first time for this issue.

You can read her blog on our website at www.002mag.com about the experience. And who better to teach her than one of our featured cyclists and Bike Houston board member, Regina Garcia.

Joining her are other supporters of the activity including Chef Hugo Ortega, B-Cycle directors William Rub and Baker Goldsmith, Sugar Cycles’ Kyle Davenport and Boone Cycles proprietor Joy Boone. They each have a different take and come from different walks of life but all share a passion for cycling.

We’ve also gone straight to Michael Payne, Executive Director at Bike Houston, for a little bit of bike etiquette for riders and motorists.

There’s so much going on this month from restaurant openings, to new construction and innovations in design – make sure to check out all of our sections covering food, art, community, design, style + leisure, so you don’t miss a thing.

TODAY THERE ARE 6 LOCATIONS – Woodlake Square, Sugar Land, a lunch-only spot in the Downtown Tunnels, a brand new Woodlands Cajun and the swankier L.A. Bar & Restaurant next door to the original South Louisiana Kitchen. “In the year 2000, when we opened Westheimer, we added a grill,” Mandola said. “Grilled shrimp, grilled catfish, grilled tilapia.

We needed to add healthier options.”

I can appreciate that. On this day I enjoy a perfectly charred, tender piece of grilled mahi mahi and some fresh mixed greens. Of course I managed to swipe a couple of the best hush puppies from my friend’s plate. Dominic shared a few of the menu items added in recent years. Snow crabs, king crab. We talked about the Mardi Gras Oysters, topped with their own homemade Cajun flavored pico de gallo. Part of Dominic’s menu tweaks included a change to the roast beef po-boy…adding provolone cheese and pickles to the hot roast beef, lettuce, tomato and brown gravy, “more a Lafayette style,” as he puts it. Their sausage poboy has a little extra kick to it as now they put the sausage link in crawfish bowl, and then add their own BBQ sauce that includes their Ragin’ Cajun brand Cajun pepper sauce. I think I got beads of sweat across my forehead just typing this. I’m going to need a beer now.

But for all the new stuff – the menu is pretty huge – the Ragin’ Cajun is still known for the crawfish. They are simply a go-to, a standard, a feast of spicy bayou goodness worth making a mess over. “I think Dad and the guys started serving crawfish in the parking lot in 1976,” Mandola said. “It was an instant success.” Through the years, I’ve downed more than a few piles of crawfish, several cold beers, while watching a game.

And I’m not the only one. Anytime I’ve been there, or simply driven by, it is seemingly always busy. A bustling lunch crowd, a fall Saturday marathon of rabid college football fans. Or just the steady stream of crawfish fanatics who get to enjoy the longest crawfish season in the land: November to July.

“Most places will sell crawfish from February to May,” Mandola said.

“We go a lot longer. It’s one reason we sell more cooked crawfish than anyone in the country.” So as they start their fifth decade, head over to Richmond and get elbow deep in a bucket or three. I’ll see you there.

In case you haven’t heard, HOUSTON HAS ATTRACTED JAMES BEARD AWARD-WINNING CHEF BRADLEY OGDEN FROM SAN FRANCISCO to open not just one but three concepts in Houston. First, he opened the Funky Chicken in The Heights, a fast casual joint that has become known for its chicken pot pie. Then, he debuted Bradley’s Fine Diner, also in The Heights. And soon, he will also open Ogden’s Pour Society in Memorial City.

Though I’m glad he’s opening all three, it’s the fine diner that I’m pretty excited about. When I dined there during the very first week that they’d opened, the restaurant already exhibited many of the qualities that I would hope to find in a long-established restaurant.

The decor was polished yet casual, so that you could come in dressed up or dressed down without feeling uncomfortable. Service was on point and not pushy, and I got the impression that everyone was trying hard to please.

Tok, a cold beef salad with red onions, peanuts and a lime-fish sauce vinaigrette that transported me to the streets of Bangkok (this will definitely become one of my go-to dishes). His Khai Luk Koei son-in-law eggs, deep fried for a lightly caramelized outer shell and served in a tamarind sauce on an Nam Tok iron skillet, is also a thing of beauty, with these amazing textures, and again, that deep tasty flavor intrinsic to Thai food.

Pad Thai, served elegantly on a large rectangular plate with small sides of peanuts, bean sprouts and a real lime wedge, is seasoned to perfection, with the noodles cooked just right. There are countless other things to try, like the Thai curries or his deep fried whole fish, so come with friends and order a bunch of things to share family style.

Did I mention how beautiful the restaurant is, as well? If you opt to dine inside, large format wall murals and great Buddha Lounge-esque playlist give the place this hip, exotic vibe, while outdoors, you’ll find one of the best new covered patios in the city.

So often at new restaurants, people recommend dishes without having tried them, but the suggestions I received from everyone from my server to general manager Sebastian Laval, to sommelier Rob Ortiz and Chef Bryan Ogden Caviar and quail (Bradley’s son), were earnest and thoughtful, evidence egg on brioche of time devoted preparing the staff.

Food might be considered a bit pricey by Houston standards, but the execution and what you get on your plate make up for it. Get the bone marrow toast or the chicken fried frog’s legs to start. Or better yet, splurge on the “Eggs and Toast” – essentially caviar and quail egg sliders, an excellent example of what the “fine” in fine diner means. I would also highly recommend the seared scallops, a totally all-American dish pan-seared until golden brown, and served in a bacon-y cream sauce with lemon gnocchi and maitake mushroom. I didn’t order the yankee pot roast, but from what I could see during my tour of the kitchen, the braised meat and potato dish looked exactly like what I’ll be wanting on my next visit.

Located in the new Gateway Memorial complex at the corner of Gessner and I10 across from Memorial City Mall, KUU means the “art of eating,” and that’s exactly the experience that Chef Adison Lee creates with his carefully composed dishes.

The restaurant design, by local designRoast Duck er Si Dang, is luxe modern Japanese, like Breast with something you might find in a Mandarin Orange Miso Oriental Hotel. An attractive, curved bar area sits to the right of the restaurant, which is bisected by a lounge area, where a copper fireplace emits a sexy glow. To the left, a long sushi bar offers ample seating for hard-core sushi eaters, while booths, tables and tatami areas are available for larger groups.

Plan to start dinner with a crafted cocktail featuring seasonal ingredients like freshly squeezed beet juice or lychee puree. Then, sit back and enjoy the show as you indulge in delicately plated sashimi starters, like the Truffle Japanese Sea Bream, or the Kanpaccio, in which thin slices of kanpachi are laid against wedges of Texas orange and finished off with a drizzle of yuzu-soy vinaigrette. If the chef is offering a nightly special, don’t hesitate, because he can whip up sumptuous dishes on the fly, like the seared hamachi belly with citrus and plums that we ordered one night (total foodgasm!).

Nigiri lovers will be pleased with the quality and flavor of the sushi rice, as well as the varied selections of traditional and exotic fish available daily. And not to be missed are the hot plates from the kitchen. Though it killed me that he’d run out of uni the night we were there (Lee’s uni-crusted king crab is legendary), we couldn’t have been happier with our Roast Duck Breast with Orange Miso, a masterful display of French technique with Japanese flavors. Our Wagyu and Unagi dish was also rich, earthy and delicious; and the Sakana Nabe was so good, we couldn’t stop eating even though we were full.

ACHIEVMENTS TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER To me, this is Houston’s most renowned asset. Just look at it, and you can’t help but say “wow!” With 20,000 physicians and an annual patient count of 7 million, the TMC is the largest medical center in the world. That gives Houston some major bragging rights. An interesting fact: The medical center is where the air ambulance known as “Life Flight” was created.

ITS FOOD HUGO’S Hands down Houston’s best upscale Mexican restaurant.

The food never disappoints, as it’s always high quality and fresh. My favorite dish is the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce. In addition to fantastic food, they serve a wide variety of tequilas and specialty margaritas. I, personally, am a beer drinker so when I go, my drink of choice is Dos Equis Lager. The ambiance is great and the service excellent. The first time I went was in 2002 and I go back at least 20 times a year.

A Thin Wall of Air: Charles James is currently on view at the Menil and curated by Susan Sutton. James is considered by many to be America’s first couturier. Dominique de Menil began buying his pieces in the mid- to late 1940s and the de Menils became great champions of his work commissioning both furniture and couture. A collection of sculptures and other works from the Menil collection called fresh: Haim Steinbach and Objects from the Permanent Collection opens June 28.

BORN AND RAISED IN THE SOUTHSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD OF SOUTH PARK, CL’CHE FIRST APPEARED ON THE SCENE IN 1993 AND HAS RELEASED 12 ALBUMS, THE NEXT OF WHICH WILL BE OUT THIS SUMMER AND IS CALLED BEAUTIFUL METAL. ON THE HEELS OF A MIXTAPE SHE RECENTLY RELEASED WITH DJ RED, SHE TOOK THE TIME TO REFLECT ON HER CAREER AND HOW MUSIC MAKING HAS CHANGED FOR HER WITH TECHNOLOGY AND AS A MOTHER. IS THERE A THEME BEHIND BEAUTIFUL METAL? It means a lot of things, but one of them is that a Beautiful Metal is like a diamond in the rough. Beautiful Metal kind of represents the hard metal but the inner beauty. I also take it to mean like the substance of metal – it can be transformed in so many different ways and bent so many ways but it still stands.

HAS IT CHANGED SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WRITE ABOUT BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE REACHING PEOPLE YOU NEVER REACHED BEFORE? Oh, definitely. Like I tell people – if you want to get to know me, you can know me through my music. I see my life through my music, so of course my life changes.

Our life changes, constantly. So, as my life matures, my music matures.

WHO ARE YOU WORKING WITH, FOR THE PRODUCTION? It came back around to the original people I was working with in the beginning, that I kinda lost in the middle of the game, and then found again. Because everybody has their own journeys and dreams. I’m working with Mr. Payback from the West Coast. He’s a multi-platinum producer, and he’s been on all of my albums. He did my “I Told You” single, from my last album. Patrick Rodriguez – who has Trackhouse – he’s been around the Houston scene and has produced everybody, mainstream and local. And from being on social networks, I’ve come in contact with a couple of new producers out there who have reached out to me. One of the guys is name Madhat. He’s from San Antonio. And a producer by the name of Treboey.

I believe he’s in Houston [laughs], but I’ve never met a lot of them personally! Social networks put you in contact with the world! I love that. I can stay home with my kids and ain’t gotta bring ’em everywhere!

WHEN YOU’RE WORKING ON AN ALBUM, DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE WAY IT FITS IN WITH YOUR OTHER WORK, OR DO YOU SORT OF ZOOM OUT WHEN YOU’RE DONE? I’m gonna say afterwards, because when I start working on music, I’m sort of like an outside listener to myself. When I do a track, I wanna see where it’s taking me.

Now, what’s gonna come out of my head – the words, the melodies – when I listen back, it shows me where I’m at. I can stand back and hear that. Then it starts showing me the direction of my album and where I’m gonna be going with it. You know, because it’s hip-hop, and it’s where I’m at in my life, and where I wanna go.

Downtown is getting a new museum that will serve as a regional gateway for tourism. The Nau Center for Texas Cultural Heritage will showcase the people, places and events of Texas’ rich history, telling the story of the 29 counties that comprise Southeast Texas through Brenda Mainwaring inspirational and interactive and John Nau exhibits. The Center will cover regions in counties from the Golden Triangle to the Golden Crescent including Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Calhoun, Chambers, Colorado, De Witt, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Goliad, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Jackson, Jefferson, Lavaca, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Waller, Washington and Wharton.

Young minds will be inspired and enlightened by past legends including the Allen Brothers, M. D. Anderson, Congressman Albert Thomas, Joseph Cullinan and Jesse Jones. Historical and archeological treasures including the San Jacinto Monument, Galveston’s Historic Strand, Spindletop, Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park and Space Center Houston will become immortalized in our history.

The Nau Center received a $1 million gift from Union Pacific Railroad for the Engines of Progress interactive experience exhibit which will support Union Pacific’s commitment to educating the community about the railroad’s integral role in the region’s past and future.

BARBARA BUSH HOUSTON LITERACY FOUNDATION REVEALS STRATEGIC PLAN TO MOBILIZE COMMUNITY TOWARD INCREASING LITERACY RATES OF PEOPLE OF ALL AGES

S

ince September 2013, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation (“BBHLF”) has worked tirelessly to convene more than 100 community leaders across Houston to pinpoint the city’s literacy crisis and solutions to this problem. Recently at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Neil and Maria Bush and Julie Baker Finck, Ph.D., the co-chairmen and president, respectively, of BBHLF, dynamically unveiled a comprehensive strategic plan for community action titled Houston’s Literacy Crisis: A Blueprint for Community Action, designed to mobilize Houstonians to attack the literacy crisis among all age groups with every resource possible. Joining forces to synergize momentum in this effort were Mayor Annise Parker, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Wendy Spencer, CEO for Corporation for National and Community Service.

At the core of BBHLF’s approach in combating literacy is a deep examination of the devastating socio-economic impacts caused by the vicious cycle of low literacy in our communities. Per Mayor Annise Parker, “No one entity or organization can solve all the problems in our city. Houston has been engaged in literacy initiatives for a long time. Although literacy has many components, in order to be truly successful in attacking this ongoing problem, we must focus on the problem as one.

Blueprint will not only help us prepare our young citizens to succeed in school but attack adult literacy, as well. In doing so, we can transform Houston into a literate community that succeeds together.”

Until the cycle of low literacy is broken, the cycle of poverty will remain unbroken.

“Low literacy has profound impacts on communities, both socially and economically,” says Dr. Finck. “To break the cycle of poverty, we must tackle social issues correlated with low literacy levels to not only increase awareness of this prevalent crisis, but mobilize our communities into action to ensure children and adults develop strong literacy skills necessary to succeed in education, the workforce and everyday life.”

In partnership with Deloitte Consulting, LLP, BBHLF has developed practical, agespecific strategies and key measurement metrics that will increase Houston’s literacy rates and ultimately serve as a model for other cities. BBHLF urges the Houston community to sign the Houston Literacy Promise pledge, promising their support of the mission to end Houston’s literacy crisis.

Hamilton: leaving the naval academy. it was tough. i liked it and put in all this time and paid my dues, but sometimes it takes courage to make a change. i admired people in the military but i realized i didn’t want it to be my profession.

HARRISON: WHat’s tHe best aDvice you’ve ever been given?

Hamilton: to assume the best in people. sometimes, when you assume the best in people, it brings the best out in them.

HARRISON: if you coulD meet anyone DeaD or alive, WHom WoulD you meet?

Hamilton: einstein would be really fascinating.

HARRISON: WHat Has been tHe biggest cHallenge in your life anD WHat DiD overcoming it teacH you?

Hamilton: the recession. When i got into the business, everything was great for a good while. overcoming that without compromising what we do was hard. it taught me resilience and how to make the right decisions. you don’t learn as much about business when it’s good; you really learn when it’s hard.

HARRISON: WHat favor WoulD you ask from goD? Hamilton: to have more time in my day. more spring, less summer!

Regina gaRcia BIKE HOUSTON Traveling to Denmark about 30 years ago, Bike Houston chair Regina Garcia’s passion for riding reignited. “In my adult life I never thought of a bicycle as transportation. A bicycle was just a recreational vehicle for me.” In her boots, skirts and blazers Regina rode to and from meetings on her bicycle with carousels of slides on her back in the rain and snow loving every minute of it – blending into the culture taught her the potential of bicycling. When Regina returned to the U.S. she began riding her bike more and more. “It’s a fun way to knit together my social life and my work life; it’s provided me with life-long friendships.” Nowadays, Regina rides her bike in Houston 5 or 6 days out of the week to and from work, riding to the Texas country-side or meeting up with friends for coffee. It’s easy to find the charms of the city at 15mph. But we need an integrated system of designated routes where the safety for bicyclists and pedestrians takes a priority ove vehicle speed. All new infrastructure projects should balance the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists along with motorists and businesses. Kyle Davenport SUGAR CYCLES Kyle’s been riding since he was a kid and has created his dream situation with his lifestyle store, Sugar Cycles in Fort Bend. When we heard Kyle referred to as the “Bike Whisperer,” we had to meet him in person. This avid cyclist has been racing for 15+ years and learned the insides and outs working at various shops throughout town. Sugar Cycles is his baby, and Kyle caters to the needs of each person that walks in the door applying all his tricks of the trade. “The shop itself is a Specialized Concept store, the only one in Texas. We partnered up with that company.”

We asked what he loves about Specialized: “They are always evolving so I don’t get bored or stagnant.” Kyle also believes in constant evolution and growth and takes trips with his employees to ride in Colorado and Europe, most recently, to see what they are doing in their bike shops.

Joy Boone OWNER, DANIEL BOONE CYCLES Owner of one of the nation’s best bike shops, Joy Boone, her husband (at the time) and seven kids started out refurbishing bikes in their home near the Medical Center to supplement their income. It wasn’t long before their high-end bicycle and equipment shop began to be the place all the other cycle shops started referring their clients to when they didn’t have something. Joy started riding a bike to college as a necessity and once her family grew, they bought bikes in Oklahoma where they lived at the time. The move down to Houston saw them lose all the bikes except Joy and Dan’s which were the best and all of a sudden those seven kids needed bikes.

So a $2 ad was placed in the Houston Post for those two bikes. “The phone literally rang off the wall,” shares Joy. “So we still were looking for the seven little bikes for the kids and Dan came home with 11 of them, those 11 was the beginning of it [the business] because with those 11 we were able to pay off everyone and those bikes off again. All because of those $2 want ads in the Post.”

Boone’s is still located in her family home but today, Joy is focused establishing the HOUSTON BICYCLE MUSEUM which is still in the funding phase but will be moving to a temporary space at Caroline and Binz with plans to open in late winter. Joy hopes to cover various subjects including history and the cultural effect bicycles have had on Houston society. Baker Goldsmith + Will ruB HOUSTON BIKE SHARE/HOUSTON B-CYCLE One day Baker Goldsmith (Marketing and Customer Service Manager for Houston Bike Share) hopped on his dad’s old bike to explore some bike paths and realized the amazing trail network available in Houston. “The growing trail network and bike share program have gotten a lot more people on bikes and more and more people are starting to see the benefits of cycling and the importance of cycling infrastructure.” Houston Bike Share (HBS) is a nonprofit organization created in 2012 to operate and expand the bike share program in Houston. B-cycle’s goal is to have 100 stations and 1,000 bikes on the ground by the end of their 5th year of full operations. To date there are 29 stations and 225 bikes. Hugo ortega OWNER/CHEF HUGO’S + CARACOL Ortega is a master of Mexican cuisine in the kitchen, but he’s also an avid cyclist and has been since the first time he got on a bike at 13 years old. He would regularly participate in the pilgrimage from Mexico City to Puebla, right under a 2-hour drive, growing up with his friends and family. He’s always had a racing bike and a mountain bike. “It’s a beautiful sport,” shares Ortega, “in that it’s only you and your bike and that’s it.” He is upon the one-year anniversary of a catastrophic accident he had on his racing bike at Terry Hershey Park that landed him in a ditch and broke his clavicle. He made it to his car and drove home to his wife Tracy, at this point in severe pain, before heading to the hospital. Now he has nine screws. And six weeks after the surgery he was spinning. Prior to his cycling accident, weekends were filled with bike riding, sometimes all the way to Austin. RIDING A BICYCLE? FOLLOW THESE RULES: ABIDE BY THE LAW. The same rules that apply to drivers apply to you.

Always ride with traffic, in the right-most lane. You may use the left lane if you are turning left. Stop when required at red lights and stop signs. Ride as if you were driving a car.

HAVE INTERSECTION SAVOIR-FAIRE. Whoever gets there first should be first in line. It you get there after a car, stay behind them.

Don’t squeeze next to them and make the driver confused. If you are next to a car, make eye contact to let the driver know your next move.

BE PREDICTABLE. Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road.

Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between cars. Signal when turning, and check behind ryou before changing your lane position.

BE HIGHLY VISIBLE. Use white lights on the front of your bicycle and red lights on back, in addition to reflectors. Wear bright, reflective clothing in low light conditions, but also during the day. There’s nothing worse than riding at night without lights or reflectors! You are practically invisible.

PLAN YOUR ROUTE. Plan your route carefully to avoid dangerous streets. Narrow, busy or fast streets are especially dangerous. Ride far enough from parked cars to avoid doors opening and anticipate drivers’ next moves, as well as road hazards.

TUNE UP AND BE WELL EQUIPPED. Check that your tires are properly inflated, your brakes are working and your chain runs smoothly. ALWAYS wear a helmet.

BE ALERT. Leave your earphones at home and turn you mobile phone off while cycling. Fewer distractions and the ability to hear what’s around you will substantially reduce your risk of accidental death.

HAVE A MOTOR IN YOUR VEHICLE? REMEMBER THESE TIPS: 1. ABIDE BY THE LAW. Speeding and driving under the influence are the most common causes of cyclist fatalities. A few extra seconds won’t kill you, but they might kill someone else. Not worth it!

2. GET OFF YOUR CELL PHONE. Save a life. Refrain from texting or talking while your motor is on. Remember – just because you are safe in your vehicle doesn’t mean everyone else is. And answering a text from your bestie can wait – we are sure they wouldn’t want you involved in an accident.

3. GIVE CYCLISTS A WIDE PASS. At least 3 ft, to be precise. A new city ordinance passed in 2013 makes this distance obligatory. Look out for undercover cops on bikes who will fine you for coming too close to vulnerable road users!

4. PROCEED WITH CARE. Intersections require special attention. Always scan carefully before proceeding. Treat cyclists as you would a motor vehicle. If they get there first, they have priority. If you get there first, they should stay behind. Make eye contact to make sure there’s no confusion.

5. OPEN SESAME. Parked on the side of the street? Never open your car door without checking your rearview mirror for oncoming bicycles.

It’s a simple habit that could prevent major trouble.

RAESWOOD PLACE Homeowners Association was chartered in 1951. the 2,200-home subdivision east of Bellaire includes seven subdivisions: Ayrshire, Braes Heights, Braes Oaks, Braes Manor, Braes Terrace, Emerald Forest and Southern Oaks. In the late 1980s a series of crimes led community-minded residents to take back their subdivision by pressuring the city government to clean up the Link Valley area as well as purchasing dilapidated apartments to tear down and creating a master plan for the area. ON OUR RADARREAL ESTATE This month, ANN TAYLOR will open a new concept store at the Houston Galleria inspired by a stylish home. It will offer a dedicated shoe and accessories shop, dress shop and power pieces shop with crystal chandeliers, modern tufted furniture and sleek feminine fixtures inspired by the ultimate closet.

UPTOWN’S BELFIORE, a luxury highrise by The Interfin Companies, recently poured its concrete mat. “This is the next step in completing our vision to offer homeowners a luxury Galleria-area high-rise with the space and square footage you would find in a freestanding home,” said Giorgio Borlenghi, president of The Interfin Companies, developer of high-rise residential buildings, Four-Leaf Towers, Villa d’Este Condominium and Montebello. Belfiore will sit on approximately two acres of land in Uptown with 46 residences, including two penthouses with two homes per floor allowing approximately 4,650sf of living space and nearly 700sf of terraces. Sudhoff Properties is handling the sales and marketing for the building, which is now over 70% percent sold.

IKEA US made its first wind farm investment in the United States with the purchase of Hoopeston Wind in Hoopeston, Illinois. The 98MW wind farm is the largest single IKEA Group renewable energy investment globally to date and will make a significant contribution to the company’s goal to generate as much renewable energy as the total energy it consumes by 2020.

The Memorial Hermann Health System board approved a $650 million expansion and renovation for MEMORIAL HERMANN – TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER, the first hospital to open in the Texas Medical Center. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer with an expected completion date in 2018.

Highlighting the project will be the construction of a new, state-of-the-art patientcare building and an additional building that will include parking and infrastructure capabilities to support the new growth. The expansion also will provide the campus with an additional 1.34 million square feet, an additional 160 beds (plus 71 replacement beds), 24 new operating rooms, 16 additional emergency room bays, 750 new parking spaces and a 333-seat cafe.

Oliver McMillan’s city-street-oriented destination, RIVER OAKS DISTRICT, a 252,000sf development of premier retail, upscale restaurants, cafes and a cinema, along with 92,000sf of boutique office space and 279 contemporary residential units, recently confirmed four luxury retailers. Cartier, Dior, Hermès and Tom Ford will operate store locations slated to open in spring 2015. The Hermès two-story building will serve as the brand’s newest flagship location, with a space totaling 10,117sf. Dior will also build two stories, spanning 9,056sf, with Cartier and Tom Ford residing in 6,040sf and 4,906sf, respectively.

ONELOVE JUICE & SMOOTHIE BAR Local yogis have no excuse to not get their ujjayi on!

YOGAONE is stretching out with three new studios, in addition to its original Midtown location and Uptown studio. YogaOne Bellaire, in the Bellaire Triangle, opened with a full schedule in March with two classrooms – one dedicated to Hot Yoga and the other to Flow and Forrest Yoga classes. YogaOne Pearland, on the west side of intersection 518 and 288, opened last month with a large yoga room that will rotate hot and flow classes. This studio offers babysitting and kids yoga classes.

YogaOne Heights, on historic 19th Street, opens in late spring and is proving to be a bike-friendly destination. PLUS, YogaOne Midtown opened OneLove Juice Bar last month featuring cold-pressed juices; healthy, artisan smoothies; and local Kickin’ Kombucha tea on tap.

The suites are lush and modern with discrete butler service, a mini bar which can be stocked to your specifications, a walk-in shower with two shower heads plus a Jacuzzi in the bathroom and one on the balcony. Floor level suites feature swim up pool access.

What sets apart Paradisus in Playa del Carmen is the quality of the food, spa and recreation on site. You’ve probably noticed that Spanish chefs are all the rage right now. And Basque CHEF MARTIN BERASATEGUI IS NO EXCEPTION. THE CHEF HOLDS SIX MICHELIN STARS and has two restaurants in Paradisus properties, one in Playa and the other in Cancun. On my visit we had the pleasure of a private dinner with the chef at his restaurant Passion while he was visiting from Spain. A meal with Berasategui is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences and you can get it here. I also dined at the less formal Pan-Asian restaurant Bana where delicious fresh sushi and sashimi were the specialty.

The attention to detail at YHI Spa from entry to departure is sublime as well. The staff is friendly, and my massage was stellar. A world-class Thelasso pool is nestled up against a wall right along one of the main corridors of the property but it is so well-planned, guests walking the corridor don’t notice the spa and patrons of the spa relaxing in the waterfalls have no idea that right over the wall is a public space.

JUICEPRESSO “Juicing” can mean several different things but in a healthy sense it means making fresh juice out of fruits and vegetables. There are many machines on the market but the best I’ve found so far is a cold press gadget called Juicepresso. It operates at an incredibly slow 40 RPM (other cold press machines work at a much faster 80 RPM). The slower speed provides maximum juice extraction providing up to 40% more juice than older model juicers, and since pressed juice lasts up to three days in your fridge, you can juice less often. The patented one-piece extraction system makes it easy to clean: Just pull out the three-in-one screw and place it in the dishwasher. Its small footprint makes it a great addition to any kitchen. $499

HTC ONE HTC makes great products but they don’t get as much love as gear from Apple®, Samsung® and others. I’ve been a fan of HTC products for several years and my love recently grew when I tested its new smartphone – the HTC One (model M8). The device is a bit heavier than other phones due to its casing being 90% metal (up from 70% in the previous model). It feels solid in your hand, and the brushed aluminum design is compelling. The Android-based OS is superfast and the all-important camera takes incredible photos and hi-res videos. I particularly like some of the shortcuts HTC created for taking selfies and editing photos. Though I usually listen to music with headphones I have found myself playing tunes through “BoomSound™” – the name HTC’s given to its front-facing speakers along with the software that powers them. HTC says total output is about 25 percent louder, thanks to a new amplifier and some extra space carved out behind the speakers. $299 with 2-year contract

“IT’S THE MOST EXCITING DEVELOPMENT WE’VE WORKED ON YET,” SAYS CARNEGIE HOMES’ ARPAN GUPTA, TALKING ABOUT MASTERSON OAKS AT WESTMORELAND, A 15HOME PROJECT SLATED TO BREAK GROUND THIS SUMMER.

The undeveloped 36,139sf property is located on the northwest corner of Alabama and Southwest Freeway, or Spur 527. “There’s this oak tree there. At first people just assumed we were some developer that would destroy the oak tree so we can build more homes, but that was never our plan. It’s a 200- to 300-year-old oak tree – one of the oldest in the city of Houston, I’ve been told,” he tells 002houston. “If you look on Google Earth, look up 420 Marshall Street; you’ll see the span of this tree takes up about a third of a block,” he enthuses. Gupta and his team decided to center a new community around the tree, making use of its shade and featuring it as the focal point of what they hope will be like a park in the middle of the city. “One of the unique things about it [this land] is this wall that’s like 20 feet high, and it has ivy all the way across it. There’s a lot of foliage and it’s very peaceful,” says Gupta.

The project is named after the Masterson family, who owned the property until the city bought it in 1959 to make way for Spur 527. “Actress Mary Stuart Masterson’s ancestors were very rich and they lived in a huge mansion. They actually made very sizeable donations to the Museum of Fine Arts, and things like that,” Gupta explains. While paying tribute to Houston’s history is not at the top of most real estate developers’ to-do lists, Gupta is quick to point out Westmoreland Historical District, on which part of the lot sits, has a rich history. “Lyndon B. Johnson, governors of Texas, many famous people used to live there.”

To honor the historical significance of this old-school part of Houston the homes will feature a Victorian style of architecture including real wood windows, cross-gabled roofs with Victorian patterns, mahogany ceiling beams, trim and baseboards, reclaimed wood floors and lots of arches.

The properties are estimated to sell between $800,000 and $1.1 million and should be completed by 2016.

ESPRESSO THE WHO: Sharing a building with the likes of Uchi and Rosemont Social Club, Southside Espresso attracts the city’s finest, just as it should. Regulars, wifi fans, book lovers, a host of locals – and not just lovers of coffee, but lovers of fine beer. Southside knows Montrose. Outside seating also adds to the location’s experience.

THE BREW: A heavyweight champion. Southside uses Fusion Beans roasted right here in Houston (whose owners happen to also own Southside) and they make fantastic coffee. Our macchiato was flawless with espresso so rich we envied the lady who we watched order a second. Lest we not mention the fantastic selection of the other brew – 7 draft beers, a host of craft beer bottles/cans and some stellar wine are also there for the taking.

THE FOOD: Pastries including muffins, scones and croissants will entertain for breakfast. Pizzas, meat pies and quiches will help ease the wait times at Uchi or do real well for a quick meal. Teas and plenty of Kickin Kombucha, while not food, are nice additions to the menu.

OVERHEARD IN THE CROWD: “Can I give you these two books and take one off the shelf?” “…Uhhhhhh, no.” We said book lovers and we were not kidding.

A customer so wanted a book off the “read while you are here” shelf she offered two of her own! Barista did not approve!
