LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
T
HE CAT’S OUT OF THE BAG. After 17+ years, 002houston magazine will relaunch as Local Houston Magazine with the January 2015 issue. We’ll still cover everything local, but we will have a whole new look. In honor of this being the last issue, I decided to fill out the entire questionnaire for our People of Houston page that’s been a part of the magazine since day one. This is the last issue you’ll see this in and that, my friends, is bittersweet for me. But I can’t wait to show you the column in its new format. Happy holidays!

BEHIND THE COVER
Page Parkes model Kirby Lindley was shot on location at Discovery Green in front of acclaimed Mexican artist Jorge Marin's Wings of the City. The bitter cold at twilight kept our team trembling in the breeze. Luckily we had no need for fans to blow the models clothes or hair, thanks to Mother Nature herself assisting in the shoot. Photographer Cody Bess created the perfect lighting to capture our dramatic cover. Hair and Makeup was created by Sherri Evvett, while Batli Joselevitz assisted and shot behind the scenes footage.

For a small fee, parents receive a constant rotation of top toys for the kids to play with. www.sparkboxtoys.com

DR. ANDREW WEIL
TALKS TRUE FOOD IN A FOODIE TOWN, IT’S HARD TO STAND OUT THESE DAYS WITH THE BEVY OF CULINARY TALENT BOTH LOCAL AND TRANSPLANT AVAILABLE AT A WHIM. BUT IT REQUIRES A CERTAIN BALANCE OF EATING AND INDULGENCE TO MAINTAIN A DEGREE OF HEALTH. TRUE FOOD KITCHEN, THE RESTAURANT CAPABLE OF INDUCING A CULT-LIKE FOLLOWING OF ITS PATRONS, ACHIEVES THAT BALANCE PERFECTLY WITH ONE BITE OF ITS KALE SALAD. This is mainly attributed to the menu being based on Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet and pyramid, which aims to counteract chronic inflammation and help people achieve and maintain optimal health. I recently sat down with the world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine when he visited Houston for a traditional Chinese medicine convention. I won’t get into the integrative medicine part of Dr. Weil’s fame too much, but I do think it’s important to know what it means. Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. It’s a concept Dr. Weil is constantly tied to and it shows in his recipes. “I love food, I love to cook,” shares Dr. Weil, but “personally, I generally am disappointed when I eat out. It’s expensive. I can generally make better food at home and I generally don’t feel well after I eat out. The dishes are too gussied up and fancy. I like really good ingredients that can stand by themselves.” About 7 years ago, Dr. Weil was introduced to Sam Fox, a very successful restaurateur in Arizona, and shared with Fox the idea of a restaurant that served healthy food. “He wasn’t interested; he said healthy food doesn’t sell. I think he thought I meant tofu and sprouts. He was very skeptical.” So Dr. Weil invited Fox to a home cooked meal and the first True Food opened in Phoenix shortly after. Back to that cult-like following – Fox was astounded that “people would come up to him on the streets and hug him and thank him for opening up one of these or beg him to open one in their town,” says Dr. Weil. Even he can’t understand how such a simple concept of true, simple food can entice 3–4 repeat visits in one week. Plus no one has copied the concept yet. The menu at True Food is a seasonal menu offering ingredients that truly have an effect on overall health plus they taste delicious. There are tonics, teas, juices and even adult beverages. If you become a true fan, pick up the cookbook with the actual recipes from the menu. Stay tuned for a new book in 2015. www.truefoodkitchen.com

DINE WRITE
TASTE AND TRADITION
EXTERIOR
I’VE GOT TO GET TO EUROPE. FOR YEARS I’VE SENSED THOSE OLD COUNTRIES CALLING ME. PARTICULARLY SPAIN. AFTER DINING AT BCN TASTE AND TRADITION, I’M GOING TO HAVE TO START MAKING ARRANGEMENTS FOR A TRIP TO BARCELONA. As I pulled into the driveway off Roseland Street in the Montrose, my dinner mate, friend Cynthia, is texting me, telling me she was moments away and asking if slacks are okay. Glancing through the window I saw nothing but gentlemen in jackets. C-suite types entertaining clients? Uh, no. These GQs were in fact the waitstaff. Suddenly I wished I’d worn a coat.
16. december 14 | www.002mag.com
IGNACIO TORRAS and acclaimed CHEF LUIS ROGER, is very classy. Off-
No worries. It’s Houston. But I must say, BCN, the vision of owner
white linen tablecloths. Perfectly low lighting, sprinkled spotlights. A converted house with seating for about 50 or so downstairs. Two rooms upstairs can hold another 25. This is clearly an “impress your date” kind of place. And everything we put in our mouths was impressive. Starting with gazpacho. Not just delicious, but refreshing. I think my pores opened up. I’m not kidding. We also enjoyed cod jowls in a bright yellow sauce, the result of olive oil and the albumin of the cod skin getting together beautifully. Salty in the best way. I wondered if I was tasting the Mediterranean, and if so, I need to swim there very soon.

GAZPACHO
This is clearly an “impress your date” kind of place. We transitioned to our entrées: grilled salmon and arugula. I could eat salmon every day. Light, rich flavor, and as if that wasn’t enough, it was served over a bed of bleu cheese and wild rice risotto. We shared. As we did the stewed pork cheeks, smothered in a merlot ragout with sautéed artichokes and prawns. Yeah, I’m getting light-headed just typing this. BCN, by the way is an abbreviation for Barcelona. Also a symbol for the authentic flavors and cuisine of that obviously wonderful, soon-to-be-experienced-by-Jeff part of the world. Chef Luis is from that region. The cuisine represents what he loved growing up there, and what he learned from his family’s way of preparing foods. He took a few moments to talk about it with us, and his enthusiasm for what he does is palpable. He also shared that he would be constantly tweaking the menu, always experimenting, perfecting. Then he went back to creating blissful experiences for the rest of the patrons.
EGGS ESTRELLADOS WITH FOIE GRAS
We also got our lips on the fois gras terrine. This was creamier, more buttery than what I’ve had before. Cyn loved it, too. In fact she shamelessly consumed most of it herself.
Reservations are suggested. It is, after all, an intimate place and from what I understand, quite popular. I’ll be back, with someone to impress. And I’ll wear a jacket.
BCN’s resident mixologist swung by and talked us into a couple of gin and tonic cocktails. One featured Hendrick’s and cucumber, the other a citrusy Tanqueray. Both were infused with happy flavors, even for my barrel-smoked whiskey palate.

OPEN
BISTRO MENIL
Okay, I’m just going to say it: I’m in love with Bistro Menil, the new restaurant by chef Greg Martin, located right on the Menil Collection campus. Approaching the new restaurant on a breezy fall evening, the scene that greeted me was like something out of a movie. The large patio, framed by a large oak tree canopy, was filled with people, twinkling candle light and the low hum of conversation. The main dining room is absolutely gorgeous, modern and bright, with clean lines, a strikingly modern chandelier and these puffy “cloud” art pieces designed by Erwan and Ronan Baroullec. But enough about the space. The menu is full of deliciousness. There’s a little bit of something for everyone, and the choices are just delightful. Get the lightly battered eggplant fries, their outer shell crisp like tempura, or the Spanishinspired, wood-fired pizza topped with jamon, manchego and slightly spicy brava sauce.

Want something to nibble on? They sound simple, but the olive and almond biscotti with goat cheese and agave nectar will go perfectly with a glass of wine, if you’re on the go and want something quick. If you plan to dine, my duck confit entrée was pure perfection – skin golden brown and crisped, sitting on a bed of pink peppercorn butter. Desserts are housemade, and while a lemon meringue tart was very good, the chocolate-covered espresso cappuccino gelato is an absolute must.
PAUL’S KITCHEN
Taking over the space that used to house Haven Restaurant in Upper Kirby is an edgier, more laidback new concept by owner Paul Miller of Union Kitchen: Paul’s Kitchen. “I wanted this to be a neighborhood restaurant where people can drop in anytime for a glass of beer, or something simple,” says Miller, who designed the space with a gastropub-type feel. With his input, Executive Chef Paul Lewis (most recently at Osteria Mazzantini) says that his menu is “globally inspired and locally sourced.” This means you can get local grown Brussels sprouts with a spicy szechwan oil to start and follow that with New Orleans-style Gulf Coast barbecue shrimp. If you love lamb, the Moroccan lamb tangia (a type of stew), beautifully presented in a clay pot, is hearty and great to share. Also great – in fact, my favorite of all the items we tried – was the fish ’n chips. I can’t remember when I’ve had a better version. Three large pieces of moist, deep fried
Fish ‘n Chips
white fish (we had cod) laid criss-cross atop each other next to a small mound of fries and green pea mash. It’s served with tartare sauce and malt vinegar just like you’d find in the UK. The batter is amazingly crisp, not oily in the least. Order it with a glass of ale or stout, or a local craft beer, and you’ll go home happy. Oh, and don’t forget to order the churros and Mexican hot chocolate for dessert. They serve it tableside, and it’s to-die-for.

The beautiful crystal chandelier is one of the things that Hearsay Gastro Lounge is known for, so when they opened Hearsay on the Green – just steps away from Discovery Green – what did they do? They made sure to install another crystal chandelier, this one bigger and more badass. That’s just one of the highlights at the new Green location, which is similar to its big brother, with a few notable differences. The crafted cocktails are the same, but there are now twice as many craft beers on tap, all of them local. You’ll find Hearsay favorites – Saint Arnold’s battered asparagus, the Hearsay burger, crab cakes and more – on the new menu, too, as well as some traditional down-home southern comfort food. “It’s the food I like to eat,” says Chanas, who pointed me to the chicken fried chicken, two pounded pieces of moist chicken covered in a crispy buttermilk batter, then topped in a country sausage gravy and served over dirty rice. Um, yum! I love, love, loved the Grilled Kobe Dog, the very definition of gourmet comfort food. It’s served in a Slow Dough Pretzel Bun that’s been deep-fried to give it that extra oomph of crispness, with a side of four-cheese mac ’n cheese and thin-cut French fries. And to finish? Get the affogato, a tall cup of ice cream smothered in chocolate sauce served with a shot of espresso on the side for a pour-over.

PERFECT PAIRS
OYSTERS. LOVE ’EM OR HATE ’EM, there are two must-follow “rules to live by” when eating them. First, they must be fresh. And second, they must be enjoyed with a great drink. Champagne? Chablis? Sure, those are nice and classic. They definitely have the crisp, light fruit tastes going for them, which always pair well with the mineral taste of the oyster, but this is Houston. And in Houston we love options, especially options paired by the best. Behold, the pairing of oysters with the Sparkling Julep from Julep on Washington Avenue. Let’s talk Julep. If you have not heard, Julep is open. And it’s sexy as all get out. Just as all the bars from the Anvil family tree have done, no expense was spared and Julep is immaculate. Embracing the “spirit and the spirits of the
South,” owner ALBA HUERTA is pretty much living the dream. Juleps, Bourbons, Classic Southern Cocktails and some fantastic spirits…all in this setting? Yes, please.
Now let’s talk about that pair. Fresh Wellfleet oysters, from the harbor off of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, served raw impart a light body with a clean finish and a nice touch of saltiness. Presented on ice, as they should be, the fresh rotating weekly oysters are served with champagne mignonette and horseradish. Your choice, if they need ’em or not. As for the drink, the Sparkling Julep uses FRV100 sparkling Gamay wine, and wouldn’t you know it, FRV100 is a play on words, i.e., “effervescent,” which is exactly what the Sparkling Julep is. Mixed with Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac, mint and turbinado sugar, it’s the dark fruits that shine in the Sparkling Julep (think cherries, strawberries and grapes) which balance out the briny, salt tastes of the Wellfleet.

WE ASKED TIM BRISCOE, THE FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSTON WHISKEY FESTIVAL, TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHISKEY AND BOURBON. THE HOUSTON WHISKEY FESTIVAL IS AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT CELEBRATES THE MOST HIGHLY REVERED SPIRIT CATEGORY, “WHISKEY!” AS A HOUSTONIAN AND WHISKEY ENTHUSIAST, BRISCOE CREATED THIS EVENT TO SHARE HIS PASSION AND KNOWLEDGE FOR THE SPIRIT FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITH HIS FELLOW ENTHUSIASTS.
2ND ANNUAL HOUSTON WHISKEY FESTIVAL WHERE: Bayou City Event Center WHEN: March 21, 2015 www.houstonwhiskeyfestival.com
Firestone & Robertson Blended Whiskey is an amazing blended whiskey that I always drink neat due to its strong inviting nose consisting of oak and vanilla. With a long finish of caramel, honey and coffee, the Firestone & Robertson Distillery hit the mark with their Blended Whiskey.
24. december 14 | www.002mag.com
The Macallan Rare Cask Single Malt Whisky is full and rich with great tasting notes of vanilla, oak and even a hint of chocolate making it very complex for a non-aged bottle. This Whisky has broken the mold or at least questions the status quo on how long a good whiskey truly has to be aged.
The Dalmore King Alexander III is a very complex elegant whiskey with a combination of fruit and spice for a slightly smoky but not too overpowering aftertaste.
Austin-based Red Handed Bourbon features some of the distilling team’s favorite bourbons from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee blended together for another 12 to 15 months.
December14TODOEDIT2_002houston 11/20/14 2:57 PM Page 25
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? WHISKEY is a spirit distilled and fermented from grains such as corn, barley, wheat or rye and then aged in wood barrels around the world. On the other hand, BOURBON can only be produced in
America (not globally like whiskey), and all bourbon have to be stored in new charred barrels. Also another key difference between the two is that bourbon has to contain no less than 51 percent corn as well. So next time you’re at your local bar you can confidently order an amazing whiskey or a good ole classic American bourbon.
As a Houstonian and a Texas native, I truly appreciate the Ranger Creek Rimfire, as with one sip you can almost taste Texas. The nose has a good light smokiness with hints of fruit that travels to the palate as well. The Rimfire is a really smooth easy whiskey to drink neat or whatever your preference.
Yellow Rose Outlaw Bourbon is definitely one of my go-to bourbons for its smooth but rich taste that has a way of lingering around your palate, leaving hints of sweet vanilla. I usually recommend Outlaw Bourbon to those who are wary of these types of spirits.
The Girvan Patent Still No. 4 distilled by the world famous William Grant & Sons Distilleries is very unique as it’s a non-aged whiskey so it’s very different from what we know of as traditional whiskey. Despite it not being aged, I still found it to be very tasty with a very fruity nose. This is a great starter for those who are looking for an introduction to single grain whiskeys, as it is very easy to enjoy.
Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix Irish Whiskey is a true Irish whiskey with a nose consisting of oak, vanilla, apple and sherry, as well. The Phoenix is pretty creamy and spicy but despite being finished in sherry cask, the sherry isn't overpowering as one would think.

CLUB/LOUNGE REVIEW
DREAMING OF REVELRY... THE KINGS OF LEON (KOL). LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM, THOSE SOUTHERN ROCKERS POLARIZE MUSIC FANS. SET ASIDE THE TURMOIL AND PIGEON ISSUES AND WE SEE A BUNCH OF GUYS WHO LIKE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME, AND WE LOVE GOOD TIMES (THIS IS A BAR REVIEW!). SO WHY KOL? WELL, KOL HAVE A SONG CALLED “REVELRY,” WHICH WE HAPPEN TO LIKE, AND COINCIDENTALLY, THOUGH PROBABLY NOT, IT WAS PLAYING IN OUR HEAD WHILE WE HUNG OUT AT THE NEW REVELRY ON RICHMOND (ROR, OUR TERM). WE ONLY HAVE 350 WORDS SO WE CAN’T BREAK DOWN ALL THE SIMILARITIES, BUT, HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS.
RoR is a really likeable place. It has a catchy name and a cool logo. And, wants all of you to … wait for it … revel. We certainly enjoyed being able it’s located in a part of town that desperately needed this type of bar. to have an Oskar Blues Ten Fidy and a Founders Breakfast stout in one sitInside, RoR is big and open with an interior that’s not too much of any one ting. We also reveled all over our food: The Montrose (turkey burger) and the Fresh Baked Pretzel (huge!) were top quality grub. Check the website theme, but comes across looking real nice. There are a whole lot of TVs, but that’s kinda important for the casual neighborhood bar. SUPERNATURAL ART Last month Mexican artist JORGE MARÍN’S bronze sculptures were installed at Discovery Green. There is an undeniable grace and lightness to Marin’s grand bronze sculptures with obvious Da Vinci-like attention to the human body. Many of his works “are precisely made with Leonardo da Vinci’s Universal Man in mind” but Marin adds his mark with his masks while at the same time recognizes his renaissance influences. It’s this seamless blend of classical influence with mythical themes of wings and masked creatures posing or flying through the air that make Marin’s work so awe-inspiring. Being from Mexico myself, Marin’s work has been familiar to me for years. It’s something most Mexican nationals can relate to and almost feel like they belong to us, as with one of the best recognizable of his works, Wings of the City, which was prominently on display in Mexico City in the middle of one of the city’s most traffic-filled roads, the Paseo de la Reforma. I asked Marin about the supernatural symbols present in his works. Marin shares, “It is not a new idea, let’s remember that since the beginning of time, some 5,000 years ago, humans are represented with wings and masks throughout various cultures and this is repeated throughout history almost obsessively. Take Garuda in India or Ehecatl (the re-Columbian deity) in Mesoamerica. In short, it’s not a new theme; we can’t deny the temptation to represent humans with this supernatural ability to fly.” And this is why Marin believes people can so easily relate to Wings of the City. “My work is able to connect easily with any person, of any race or culture and in that sense it has been so well received by Houstonians.” Marin continues to explore and push his boundaries promising exciting new works in 2015.

ART HOUSES
THIS MONTH’S MUST-SEE EXHIBITS.
FOR A COMPLETE LISTING OF ART HOUSES, PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT www.002mag.com. 1. DEBORAH COLTON GALLERY From New Orleans, acclaimed artist Angelbery Metoyer opens
Seasons of Heaven which experiments with presuppositions of personal evolution and allows for the presented artworks’ imbued memory to give way to their greater purpose and meaning. A title influenced by childhood, expressing Metoyer’s meditation on past and future as an individual that gauges the changing season of a present life, examining moments that reoccur and those that will never occur again. Metoyer’s constant exploration of what humans refer to as heaven make for vivid creative pieces throughout his career which started at 18 with a dual exhibit at Project Row Houses in Houston. Today Metoyer’s work can be found in many museum collections including the African American Museum in Dallas, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig and the Williamsburg Museum of 21st Century Art in Brooklyn, plus countless private collections. On view through January 3, 2015.

Out of Place: Photographs and Other Fictions by Barbara Levine and Daniela 2. Edburg use photography as a jumping-off point for their artistic journeys, but then take us into uncharted and often mysterious terrain. By constructing and photographing artificial environments, or re-assembling found photographs into dystopian montages, the artists create work that cunningly subverts the traditional definitive functions of the photograph. Levine and Edburg are the third group of artists to live, work and exhibit at Cherryhurst House. Make sure to check out this new addition to our local art scene this month. PVA GRAD TIM GUINEE IS ONE BUSY GUY. HE’S FLYING AROUND THE COUNTRY WITH HIS DIRECTORIAL FILM DEBUT, “ONE ARMED MAN,” WHILE NOT EATING MUCH TO PREPARE FOR HIS NEXT ROLE AS A CANCER PATIENT. IN HIS SCANT DOWNTIME, HE’S A BEEKEEPER, TIGHTROPE WALKER, BANJO PLAYER, FIREMAN AND FARMER. AND HE’S MARRIED TO PROLIFIC WRITER DAISY FOOTE, DAUGHTER OF PLAYWRIGHT HORTON FOOTE AND A SIMILARLY PASSIONATE SOUL. I RECENTLY SPOKE TO TIM FROM HIS FARM IN UPSTATE NEW YORK AND HAD A CONVERSATION WITH THE SELF-PROCLAIMED “MIGRANT FILM WORKER” ABOUT HIS NEW FILM, WHAT HE LOVES ABOUT HOUSTON AND HIS TRANSITION FROM ACTING TO DIRECTING FILMS. Tim was only in Houston for his high school years but it was here where his love of art and drama and culture was nurtured – inspired by his artist mom as well as by others in his world: “I used to go into Brazos Bookstore all the time and Karl (Kilian, then the owner) would suggest books. It felt like he had read everything there and he would talk to me at length about my selections.” Other favorite haunts were the River Oaks Theatre (“I went there all the time and saw films like ‘Our Hitler,’ a seven-hour experimental German film”), the Alley Theatre, the Shakespeare Festival, TUTS productions and the famous punk hangout, the Island. And HSPVA was front and center for him. “That place was a sanctuary for me…a phenomenal gift,” said Tim.

“One Armed Man” is a short film that made its debut here last month during the
paced film that captures life in 1920s Wharton, Texas, in a way that resonates with today’s struggles between “The Man” and “the man.” Based on a Horton Foote play, the story is a tense moment-in-time in which a young, unstable man named Ned insists over and over again that his former cotton gin boss return his arm that was cut off in one of the factory’s dangerous machines. Guinee played Ned in a stage version many years ago, so that connection, coupled with the fact that he’s a huge fan of Horton Foote’s work, made this a perfect first foray. Future feature-length film projects include one with wife Daisy, based on her well-received Off Broadway play Bhutan, and a triptych of Horton Foote plays, expanding the story in “One Armed Man” to include the 1950s and 1980s. Tim Guinee’s art is all in the family…and it’s all good.

SECRET SANDWICH Fresh Arts | Opening reception: Friday, December 5, 2014 December 5, 2014 – January 16, 2015 How do you bring together six talented artists working independently under a common theme for a group show? The answer: Make it fun. Fresh Arts presents Secret Sandwich, a multimedia exhibition of new work from artists Monica Foote, Jonathan Jardin, Paris Jomadiao, Geoff Smith, Alyssa Stephens and Alonso Tapia. In 2013 the local collaborative combined forces to create and distribute the limited edition zine, Cat Juice. In this first full-scale exhibition, they will turn their attention to dissecting an all-American lunchtime favorite. Using video projection, large-scale soft sculpture, fabric art, cut paper collage, graphic design, painting and done in the collective’s distinctive tongue-in-cheek style of art making, Secret Sandwich will cut, layer and serve the results of their unique collaborative process in the Fresh Arts gallery. The public is invited to a free opening reception with the artists beginning at 6pm, on Friday, December 5, at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007. Free parking is available. www.fresharts.org
UNSILENT NIGHT Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts December 11, 2014, 6pm reception, 7pm promenade Join the Mitchell Center in collaboration with Buffalo Bayou Partnership for a free interactive holiday event, Unsilent Night. New York composer Phil Kline created this 43-minute piece, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music that can easily be downloaded on your smart phone – you will be downloading the app once you arrive. When participants play their different “parts” simultaneously, it helps create the special sound of the piece. The event takes place on Lot H of Sabine Promenade, Free. www.mitchellcenterforarts.org/unsilent-night/

As the third installment of the Domestic Familiarity exhibitions, the common thread amongst these diversified artists is their emphasis on depicting the mundane. Objects that are simple and inconspicuous staples of life in the industrialized world assume a role of prominence, unveiling beauty and intrigue from inherent banality. RECORDING
U-NEEK
SECOND WARD RAPPER U-NEEK STARTED RECORDING WHEN SHE WAS IN HER EARLY TEENS, TOOK A FIVE-YEAR BREAK, AND THEN CONNECTED WITH THE HOUSTON CREW HONGREE MOB (ALSO FEATURING BIG GERB, YUNG SURREAL, SPIKTAKULA). SHE CAME BACK AS A DIFFERENT ARTIST. HOW WAS YOUR HALLOWEEN WEEKEND? It was crazy. I didn’t really go out, but I when I did, I got into an accident. But I made it out all right. I got a little bruised up.
Facebook stories are now, you see a little story and most likely it’s fake? That’s kinda the way I thought it was. I thought it was just a story, but it was crazy to find out it was true.
WAS IT YOUR FAULT? No, I was in the back asleep. But if I was awake, I probably could have prevented it.
DO YOU STILL FREESTYLE OR ARE YOU MORE OF A WRITER NOW? Well, really, I’ve always been a writer. I used to write short stories and poems, and somebody heard my poems and they were like, “Well, if you can write like that, you can spit.” Back then, since I wrote all the time, it was easy for me to just freestyle. After that five-year break, I got a little rusty, but I’ll still go in on a freestyle. Especially when I’m with Hongree Mob. When we’re at shows, we always break into a freestyle, and they always throw me in the circle, so I can never stay quiet. I gotta step up and spit somethin’, and they’re some beasts, so I gotta come with it. That’s one thing where I feel like I wanna sharpen back up, because I miss that old feeling of battling dudes. I used to do that shit a lot at parties and at school.
DID YOU HAVE HOUSTON HEROES GROWING UP? Well, to be honest with you, when I was young, I was into, like, dance music, alternative music, Spanish music, R&B. I liked rap and hip-hop, but that wasn’t what I wanted to buy. I didn’t start listening to the artists like that until really, I think, SPM. I knew rap already, but when I heard SPM, I guess because he was Hispanic, that really sparked my interest. Like, “Well, maybe I could do it, too.” HOW DID IT HIT YOU WHEN HE WENT TO JAIL? Man… I still discuss this now, ’cause now that I’m doin’ my little thing in the underground, like I’ve met Low G and Rasheed from Dope House, so hearing the stories, it makes me feel like “Damn – he needs to be out here.” I know the story’s messed up and everything, but… I just feel like we lost a good artist, man. And he was so close to home. He was from here. It was just like he was one of us. Some of my cousins knew him. HE MEANT A LOT TO THE COMMUNITY. He did. It caught me off guard. I didn’t believe it. You know how all those

WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED NEXT? By January or February I’m gonna drop my first solo album. The title is Lick My Flawz. I might be callin’ some people out on there, I don’t know yet. THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR THAT. There’s always room for it. I’m known to talk a lot of shit so I might as well put it on the tracks. Get some frustration out. www.soundcloud.com/u-neek-1 Interview by Lance Scott Walker | Photography by Anthony Rathbun

A GREATER
VISION
Local optometrist, Dr. Moes Nasser, O.D., doesn’t take his blessings lightly. Having grown up very poor in the village of Bariadi in Tanzania, Dr. Nasser came to the US to attend college with just $20 in his pocket. American Missionaries piqued the idea about getting an education in America, so Nasser applied for a scholarship from an Agahkhan Foundation in Switzerland and applied to the University of Houston. (Because they didn’t have an application fee at the time.) As he became successful, he decided to help his village, where much of his family and many friends still live. He established a vision clinic to help the people in his village and surrounding areas who are in need of glasses, many of whom walk dozens of miles to be seen. Now he is on a new mission to raise money to buy a bus, which can be used as a mobile sight unit with an exam room and a lab, so prescription lenses can be cut and given to patients immediately. “We are not just giving vision to someone. We are also helping a person have function and livelihood. People who are on the brink of blindness are now living changed lives,” says Dr. Nasser. So far, he has raised nearly $8,000, and has a goal of $100,000. Just five dollars is all it takes to examine a person and give them glasses in Tanzania. To help Dr. Nasser’s cause, checks can be sent to Optometry Giving Sight | 17282 Tomball Parkway, Houston, TX 77064.

SPORTS
BEN JONES FOOTBALL, FAMILY AND HUNTING TEXAS IS HOME TO A SLEW OF GOOD OLE BOYS, WHICH IS PROBABLY ONE REASON TEXANS OFFENSIVE LINEMAN BEN JONES FITS RIGHT IN. “THAT’S ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT HOUSTON – YOU’VE GOT THE BIG CITY AND ALL YOUR NICE RESTAURANTS, BUT YOU CAN GO 30 MINUTES OUTSIDE AND YOU’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE,” JONES SAYS.
BEN JONES IS BY DEFINITION A COUNTRY BOY.
Just ask him his favorite color. His response: “Does camo count?” He’s a proud owner of camo-colored Crocs®. Recently married, Jones says, “The best I could do was wear boots,” since camo was vetoed. Even guys like Arian Foster and Duane Brown give him heat for owning so much camo. “They’re always like, ‘what else could you possibly have?’” since he even carries camo luggage to the games. While the Alabama native is 100% committed to football season, Jones points out it’s also dove-hunting season, and he’s taking advantage of it every chance when he’s not on the field. His favorite hunting buddy is teammate and friend Shane Lechler, where the two share a unique Monday Night Football experience. “His [Lechler’s] mom has land in Sealy – it’s a way to get away from football and clear your mind. Go out there, relax and just talk – we’re out in the middle of nowhere. If we go out there on a Monday we might watch some football – his mom has a TV in the barn – we’ll clean the doves we killed and cook supper out there and watch the game,” Jones says. Jones’ love for hunting started when he was six. “After my dad passed, my mom would carry me hunting – she would sit in the hunting stand and read her magazine while I was hunting because I wanted to go and she didn’t want me to go by myself,” he recalls. Hunting is also a way for Jones, now in his third season with the Texans, to spend time with family. “My granddaddy trains bird dogs so that’s something we can do together,” he says. While Lechler is his go-to hunting buddy, Jones has put some thought into other teammates he’d like to see with a shotgun. “I’d probably take Duane Brown, Chris Meyers or Garrett Graham – Garrett’s never shot a gun so that could be fun. Chris grew up in Miami and always been in a big city, but he could be all for it. I know Duane’s been [at the range in Vegas] and likes to shoot guns, so getting him out of his comfort zone in the middle of nowhere – I’d like to see that. Duane probably doesn’t have any camo so I’d have to loan him something. All he wears is his golf attire because he’s a big golfer,” Jones says, laughing at the image of fellow larger-than-life lineman decked out in camo.

DESTINATION
SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, AT THE SHARD, LONDON ESIGNED BY WORLD-RENOWNED ARCHITECT RENZO PIANO, THE SHARD BUILDING IN LONDON, WHICH WAS FINISHED IN 2012, IS WESTERN EUROPE’S TALLEST STRUCTURE (AT LEAST FOR NOW), COMING IN AT 95 FLOORS AND 1,016 FEET. SO WHEN THE SHANGRI-LA HOTEL OPENED IN THE SHARD THIS PAST SUMMER, IT BECAME LONDON’S FIRST ELEVATED, HIGH-RISE HOTEL – A DISTINCTION THAT, AS I RECENTLY DISCOVERED, GIVES GUESTS A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE CITY. The hotel occupies the 34th to 52nd floors, so after I checked in at the street level desk, I sped up to the 35th floor – ear pops and all – in one of the express elevators. This official lobby level, which also houses the main restaurant and lounge, boasts 360degree, double-height, floor-to-ceiling windows, where guests get their first taste of the hotel’s unique vantage point: Spread out below you are breathtaking views of everything from Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament to several bridges along the Thames and – on a clear day – even the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Similar views can be enjoyed from the 52nd-floor champagne and cocktail bar, as well as the infinity pool,

which is the highest in London and turns into a VIP lounge area at night. The panoramas are the main attractions in the 202 rooms and suites, too. My Iconic City View category option consisted of a spacious corner room that curved with the edge of the building; I felt like I was floating over the city. Though some of the other room categories have touches like bathtubswith-views or separate living areas, I loved this room for the uninterrupted vistas and the way I could watch the light change over the city all from the comfort of the plush bed. Add in all the other perks, like marble bathrooms with heated floors, free WiFi and complimentary Nespresso machines, and it was hard to tear myself away from this perfect perch in the sky.

But London was calling. From the hotel’s convenient location in the booming South Bank area, it was easy to head out exploring. Highlights included taking in the exhibits at the nearby Tate Modern museum, and exploring the famous Borough Market (a haven of farmers’ stalls, food carts and artisan producers) with the hotel’s chef. This experience is available as part of the “At the Market with Chef” package for two, which also includes the signature Eastmeets-West Afternoon Tea and a personalized five-course meal made with ingredients from the market. Served overlooking the twinkling city lights, of course. by Sandra Ramani

THINGS WE LOVE
Local acclaimed abstract painter Marilyn Biles, her daughter Nancy Guthrie and Nancy’s daughter-in-law Anna Wilson are the brains behind Manoosh, a creative company that exposes the work of local artists by taking art out of the galleries and into the hands of people. Bile’s paintings are brought to life in the softest cashmere and modal blend scarf. We are obsessed with how well her art translates into a wearable luxury item. It’s no wonder his well-curated store is among the first in town to snap up such collections as Isabel Marant Etoile and Play by Comme des Garcons. Coincidentally, Play, one of the diffusion brands of Comme des Garcons known by the heart logo designed by Filip Pagowski, is one of Hall’s holiday picks. The black polo is great for that guy or gal on your list. $195
This one will have him laughing while smelling amazing. Parisian line Etat Libre d’Orange’s Fat Electrician perfume is created for the guy whose “beauty would have been his greatest asset. A midnight cowboy, his splendor consumed in the service of others. Now, a fat electrician in New Jersey is cursed with the memory of his glory days because all beauty carries within itself the knowledge that it cannot last…” $80
And finally, Maison Martin Margiela’s unisex gold signet ring is the perfect pinky ring. The design breaks from the norm, modernizing the signet by splitting it in half. $2,900 december 14 | www.002mag.com .57

TOOLS AND GADGETS
EPSON® EXPRESSION PREMIUM XP-820 It has been a long while since I played with a new printer as nothing extraordinary has altered the ubiquitous consumer product category. But I have been impressed with the speed and quality of a new “Small-in-One” device from Epson. The Expression Premium XP-820 delivers vivid quality with smudge-resistant photos up to 8” x 10”. It has a small footprint and has a 30-page automatic document feeder, auto 2-sided printing, copying, scanning and faxing. My findings found it prints 4” x 6” photos in as fast as 12 seconds. I also like the connectivity – you can print from smartphones and tablets, or scan photos to Facebook or the cloud. A 4.3” touchscreen makes it simple to use and features gesture navigation.

SONICLEAN VACUUM STEADICAM® CURVE It seems most everyone has some sort of action camera today and devices from GoPro® are all the rage. But getting decent videos can be tough when the camera moves and shakes. For smooth Hollywood-like shots, invest in the Steadicam ® Curve™. It is a stealth camera stabilizer designed for actionpacked, one-handed GoPro camera shoots. Combining the Curve’s compact form factor with Steadicam’s stabilization technology, the possibilities for shake-free video are now endless for GoPro users. Weighing just a half pound, this is a great accompaniment for any journey, be it shooting school sports, taking it for a thrill ride in the skate park or zooming down a mountain on skis or snowboard. The built-in mount works with several GoPro camera models, and the ergonomic handle can lock for a rock-solid grip.

Cold and flu are two of the most common seasonal illnesses, affecting millions each year. I am always on the lookout for products to help prevent germs from spreading. Something interesting is a vacuum backed by 12 patents that effectively cleans carpets at 12,000 vibrations per minute, removing bacteria, allergens and more. The Soniclean VT Plus S-200 uses technology similarly used in sonic toothbrushes and jewelry cleaning. It combines suction with sonic technology for an intense cleaning experience. This light, upright vacuum cleans carpets to dislodge and remove surface dirt and dust, but also goes deeper to remove microscopic particles embedded deep within the floor. It has a low-profile design that can reach under furniture and a patented fragrance dispensing system that releases a light scent of fresh folded laundry.
