The highway makes the journey by car to Rosario very easy. We arrived by night, but we had enough energy to go out. A couple of beers, a glimpse of the very active Rosario nightlife, the unavoidable touristy touch of seeing the flag monument lit up at night, and then to bed. The next day we felt like doing something cultural, so partly by bike and partly on foot, we checked out, among other places, the impressive bronze monument to Che Guevara, Fontanarrosa’s mural, the Negro Olmedo memorial… legendary characters from Rosario city. We noted the large number of concept stencil graffiti all around the city, like the bicycles, which are all over the place, and represent the disappeared during the military dictatorship. In the afternoon, we went to Victoria beach, which is perfect for enjoying the sun, the cute girls and the Paraná river./ / /Our next destination was the province of Entre Ríos, and we started out with an unusual tour: the jewish villages route. We visited Villa Domínguez (where Nico’s grandma was born and lived), Villaguay, Ingeniero Sajaroff, Basabilvaso and Villa Clara, among others. Hundreds of jews settled here between the late 1800s and early 1900s, carrying hopes of work and freedom. In all these rural villages, a sense of tranquility and solitude filled the air. We visited a cemetery and a few synagogues which were closed, but the locals said they were active. It was like going 100 years back in time.
The next stop was relaxation: the Villa Elisa thermal spa. We put up our tent and started the evening with rizo, meat and vegetables. The next a wonderful asado with chomorning we woke up, had breakfas t and went right into the thermal you! The pools vary in temperatu water pools. Relaxation seizes re, with some of them reaching up to 104°F! We had a lot of fun in the the absolute climax was when we pool with artificial waves, and visited the spa… what a spa! Hydr omassage, sauna, steam rooms, show with a view of the natural scene er circuit and a stunning pool surrounding us. We were told not to stay for more than 15 minutes which was obviously impossible to in each circuit, a piece of advice follow. Anyw trip up the Uruguay river, a few hour ays, we took a magical boat s of sailing and pure air. “Rayo” (Spanish for “ray”), the boat capt “la Rubia”, the guide, told us, amo ain, showed us all around, and ng other things, the story of the ‘Yata y’ palm trees and how they made to Entre Ríos--a very interesting it from the Misiones rainforest story!
Last day in Colón. Our craving for adventure got us on a boat with Pablo, captain and guide, a wildlife expert who took us with a group of people to the sand banks, the quietest place in the world. The only sound you hear is the sounds of the insects and birds of the jungle; the river is an open-air mirror which enhances the beauty of the scene. Then we went for a walk in the jungle. Pablo says the jungle is a drugstore, because of the number of natural medicines it offers, from cicatrizants to hallucinogens. This was a proper jungle, and hanging from a liana like Tarzan, I was able to feel the natural connection./ / / That was a perfect opportunity to visit Gualeguaychú, home to Argentina’s most popular carnival. Among showers and mates, we spent a very quiet afternoon, knowing that the evening would be very heated. We were tipped to visit “La Previa”, where the paraders get ready to get onstage. A lot of adrenalin and excitation was in the air of the Corsódromo, the actual parade site. The main course was choripán (a chorizo sandwich) and lots of beer. Then we went out on the parade strip. It was full of colors, characters, dancers with people dancing around, pictures, music and joy all over the place. The schools that paraded were Marí Marí, O-Bahia and Papelitos; each of them offered a unique show. We had such a good time, it’s amazing how much joy this event passes on to you!
On we went, and Villa Paranasito was the last stop. We and 4 other friends who were fishing enthusiasts, Saba, el Tano and Mauricio (the boat captain) got on , Carlos, Daniel a boat and sailed up the Uruguay river . First we caught some catfish to make magical picada while we waited for the bait. We had a fish to bite. With patience and skill, Saba caught a few 5-pound dorados, and becam the day. El Tano didn’t fall behind, and e the hero of scored 1 goal. The rest of us didn’t get anyth ing. And the Almighty carried the immensity of this burden of guilt forever.

Alguna vez alguien me dijo que los que saben hacer grandes propuestas proponen algo tan deseado por casi todos que la persona receptora del mensaje no puede decir que no. /// Cuando me propusieron volar en globo no pude decir que no. /// Llegamos con Ariel, el devenido fotógrafo, al encuentro de Carlos: el comandante del Globo. /// Carlos hace la previa y tira frases seductoras para calentar la cosa: “Es el viaje más romántico que existe”, “Me casé en el globo”, “Volar en globo es como la vida, no sabes hacia dónde te va a llevar el viento”. /// El comandante nos lleva a un campo para empezar con el operativo despliegue e inflado del globo, que se hace con una especie de mechero lanzallamas lleno de gas. /// La cabina para los pasajeros es una canastita de ratán en la que entran entre dos o tres personas más el comandante. /// Levantamos vuelo y no sabemos hacia dónde iremos. Para eso existe el rescate. Una especie de safari en donde una camioneta nos persigue por tierra y está al tanto de todos los movimientos del globo. Ariel iba en esa camioneta sacando fotos. /// El globo no vacila, podría decir que se desliza. Las panorámicas de los lugares que sobrevuela son hermosas. La sombra que se proyecta en los campos y ver al globo espejado cada vez que pasamos por un riacho es único. Volar a pocos metros del piso y sentir cómo las ramitas golpean en la base de la canastita, es lo más parecido que conozco a levitar. /// Después de un rato en el aire, el comandante visibiliza una especie de potrero para un aterrizaje perfecto. /// La despedida fue muy linda. A puro mate y galletitas nos juntamos con la gente del rescate para compartir sensaciones. /// ¡Los gustos hay que dárselos en vida!

Texto/Text: Gabriel Katz - Fotos/Photos: Ariel Dress BALLOONING EVERYWHERE AND NOWHERE /// Somebody once told me that people who know how to make big proposals propose something so greatly desired by almost everyone that the receiver of the proposal cannot reject the offer. /// When I was offered to fly a hot air balloon, I just couldn’t say no. /// Ariel, the newly-become photographer, and I, met with Carlos, the captain of the Balloon. /// Carlos gave us a pep talk, throwing teaser phrases at us to warm things up: “It’s the most romantic trip in the world”, “I got married on a balloon”, “Flying a hot air balloon is like life itself: you never know where the wind will take you”. /// The captain took us to a field to begin unpacking and inflating the balloon, which is done using a kind of gas burner. Passengers fly in a rattan basket which fits two to three persons, plus the captain. /// We take off, and we don’t know where we’ll go. That’s where the rescue team comes in. A kind of safari where a truck follows us by land, monitoring the balloon’s every move. Ariel was in that truck, taking pictures. /// The balloon doesn’t sway; you could say it drifts. The panoramic views of the places you fly over are beautiful. The shadow cast on the fields, and the mirror image of the balloon on the brooks are something unique. Flying just a few meters off the ground, feeling how the tree twigs hit the base of the basket is the closest thing I know to levitating. /// After a while on the air, the captain spots some kind of wasteland for a perfect landing. /// The farewell was very nice, sharing ‘mate’, cookies and impressions with the rescue team. /// Life must be lived to the fullest!

A veces, para contar una historia de estas características, hay que ubicarse en épocas lejanas, lugares remotos. No es este caso. El relato comienza a finales de la década del 70 del siglo XX. Y el escenario es aquí mismo, en Argentina, en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Por aquellos años llegó a la ciudad el Circo de los Zares. Venían arrastrando la fama de ser uno de los más importantes circos soviéticos. También arrastraban un problema: la extraña desaparición de algunos de sus animales. Tan extraña como la desaparición de mascotas de los vecinos del circo. Pero un día Boris Loff, el dueño del circo, develó el misterio: encontró a Belek, uno de los enanos, chupando la sangre del cuello de una mona tití. Belek es inmediatamente despedido. Originario de los Cárpatos (igual que el
Conde Drácula, nada menos), Belek queda varado en Buenos Aires y se instala en una casa abandonada del barrio de Flores. Barrio en el que empezaron a faltar de sus hogares perros y gatos. El rumor del incidente del circo condenaba a Belek, pero el escurridizo enano no era fácil de atrapar. Las casas se empezaron a llenar de ajo para ahuyentar al sediento vampiro. Se dice que un grupo de vecinos llegó a capturarlo con la red de un arco de fútbol. Pero Belek logró huir y nunca más pudo ser capturado. Se cuenta que sigue moviéndose entre las sombras de la ciudad, atacando a animales callejeros o capturando a alguna mascota. No hay registros de que Belek haya atacado a seres humanos, amén de algún mordisco en defensa propia cuando se vio acorralado. Pero ¿vas a seguir durmiendo sin una ristra de ajo cerca de tu cama?
BELEK, THE VAMPIRE DWARF /// Sometimes, to tell a story like this, you need to travel far back in time, to distant places. This is not the case. The story begins in the late 1970s, in the city of Buenos Aires. /// Around that time, the Circus of the Tsars came to the city. They carried the reputation of being one of the biggest Russian circuses. They also brought a problem with them: the strange disappearance of some of their animals. As strange as the disappearance of the pets of the neighbors of the circus. /// But one day, Boris Loff, the owner of the circus, revealed the mystery: he caught Belek, one of the dwarves, sucking blood off the neck of a lion tamarin. Belek was immediately fired. /// Born in the Carpathian Mountains (just like Count Dracula), Belek got stranded in Buenos Aires and settled in an abandoned house in the Flores district. Dogs and cats started to disappear from their homes in that neighborhood. The rumour of the circus incident made Belek a likely suspect, but the dwarf was slippery and hard to get. Houses began to be filled with garlic to scare off the thirsty vampire. /// The story goes that a group of neighbors captured him with the net of a soccer goal. But Belek managed to slip away and was never captured again. It is said that he is still moving in the shadows of the city, attacking stray animals or capturing some pet. /// There is no record of Belek having attacked humans, except for some bite in self defence when he was cornered. But, are you going to keep sleeping without a string of garlic close to your bed?
