Dear Ziyuan: I am writing this letter of recommendation as a reference for you during your career pursuits. It was a pleasure to working with you last summer, while you were employed as an architectural intern in our office. You displayed a number of strengths. These strengths include 3D modeling, design, graphics and high quality renderings. Thank you for taking the initiative and jumping in to help us meet a multitude of deadlines. Your intelligence, enthusiasm and the ability to quickly learn new software such as Revit, Rhino, 3D Max, among others was fantastic! You were productive and always able to manage available resources to get the job done, regardless of the effort. In addition to being a hard worker, you are easygoing and were a nice addition to our office culture. It was great to see you working with people from different offices and adapting quickly to the global nature of our work. I highly recommend you to any firm who is interested in pushing the limits on design and hiring a dedicated and talented young architect. If your performance with AECOM is any indication of how you’d perform, I know that you will be an extremely positive addition to any organization. If you need any additional information, feel free to contact me anytime at 248-204-4254. Sincerely,

G. Jerry Attia, AIA, PMP, NCARB Vice President, Managing Principal

Another Monumentality Home at the Age of Cyborg Urbanization

Time: Winter, 2018 Location: Detroit, Michigan Collaborated with Andrew Devarez, Yuanzhao Wang Instructor: El Hadi Jazairy, Sean Vance

The city is a cyborg, where humanity and public sphere are supported by its technological networks and life supporting system. Begining with the houses design for three cyborgs-Nakio the Bionic Dog, and Neo from the Matrix, assisted mobility and digital connection are recognized as major apparatus in this project. Moreover, due to the unique site, located at the end of Detroit's marvelous riverwalk, but at the same enclosed by the surrounding facilities, a new monumentality is erected to activate the site.

Loops of the City There are two existing loops: the loop of free way and the loop of People Mover. three more loops are proposedI to enhance the mobility towards the riverfront.

Another Monumentality The site calls for a new monument, which would give a rewarding moment to the end of riverfront landscape. However, existing monument models in Detroit, such as Renaissance Center, has long been criticized as exclusive corporate agenda. In this project, a potential development model of using monumentality to construct publicity actively is explored. Physical form of architecture is understood as a machanism to cultivate social justice by converting money flow into high interactive and inclusive urban space. The superstructure of the building helps to create a bottom space full of public programs, which is open and connected to the entire urban system.

Virtual Commons The pyramidial form incubates a central atrium, which is defined as a space for collective virtual interaction. At the age of cyborg, virtual connection is vital method for people to get informed and educated. Within this atrium, a digital art gallery, a digital library and a projection machine are provided as the plugs for entering virtual world. These programs not only provide amusement for both the residents and the public alike, but they cater to our cyborg needs of exchanging information, socializing, and recreating, all while being immersed the digital world.

Balcony Exposure The pyramidal form also presented a unique opportunity to provide every unit with a balcony, which is regarded as a place for interaction with natural elements. While the dometicity require most room to be enclosed, balcony becomes the opened-up moment for engagement with air and sun light. The sloped balcony itself defines a new relationship between people and sky.

Hot Air: Firestation No.1 Time: Fall, 2017 Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan Individual Work Instructor: Brittany Utting

This is a project using defensive typology to challenge public space. Starting with the hybrid of two different precedents, Agora as a public typology and Vila Monastery as a introverted typology, the proposal exhibits a hybrid characteristics of both precedents: concrete vs tectonic, carved space vs columns, public civic space vs private cells.

Hybrid

Mixed Typology As a semi-military infrastructure, a fire station, on one hand, needs to exhibit a defensive outlook towards the city. By contrast, as a civic infrastructure, a fire station should be a public space for citizens. This project transforms and contracts features from two precedents, the colonnade as public typology and carved poche space enclosed with thick wall as defensive typology. By scaling and collaging these features, there forms a new plan with both the defensive and public identity.

Enclosed Domesticity For the interior space, as a result of the hybrid, the firefighter rooms are embedded in a concrete volume, which creates most inhabitable space on the site. At the same time, it also creates a heavy, rough dark, enclosed spatial quality for firefighters.

Defensive Publicity For the public external space, facing the Hands On Museum, the colonnade and inner street becomes an internal street. While the carved concrete embodies the heaviness, serving as a base for the lightweight roof structure, the truss of the roof by contrast is light, which is not only creating exposed terrain on top, while also introducing the aesthetic of the garage typology as a new contamination of the fort.

Composting Toilet

This project reimagines the metabolism of the village in Qichun, a mountainous area where the considering of material and energy flow becomes Time: June, 2015 the major concern of this design. The building Location: Qichun, China material comes from local field and could finally Collaborated with Fang Fang, Huang Ruisong, get decomposed in the soil. The building itself Tu Shangzi also acts as a machine to turn human waste into Instructor: Tan Gangyi useable energy.

From Machine To The Daily Time: Summer, 2017 Location: Huangshi, China Undergraduate Thesis Work Collaborator: Han Xu Instructor: Wei Zhou

This proposal aims to convert the old facilities of Huaxin Concrete Factoryto a new terminal for daily activities. As the city keeps expanding itself, the once marginal area where the factory is located has become a dense residental core, thus making the factory a urban vacuum which takes vast land in this central area. The design ambition is not only scaling down the physical size from a machinery scale to a humanistic scale, but also pull it back from a global metabolic network to a local life routine.

Cartographical Gardening Reassembling A Post-digital Nature Time: Winter 2019, in progress Ongoing Graduate Thesis Work Individual Work Instructor: Ellie Abrons

This project visualizes and materializes two competing comprehensions of the built environment: that of the human and that of the machine. Speculating on the impacts of digital information mapped and zoned in physical space, the project reveals the way in which cartographical techniques such as photogrammetry and 3d scanning understand the physical world, often in a manner different from human perception. The project then projects these materializations into new logics for design.
