1 FOSTER + HEATHERWICK in china 2 frozen IN THE MAKING

Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio have revealed joint designs for the Bund Finance Centre (BFC) in Shanghai. The 420,000sq m mixed-use development comprises eight buildings, with Grade A offices, a hotel, retail space, an arts centre and a public plaza. The two largest towers sit at the back of the site, with the buildings in front gradually staggered in height to relate to the scale of the surrounding structures, a mix

of 19th-century buildings and modern skyscrapers. A materials palette of stone with bronze details aims to give the buildings a “jewel-like quality”, says Foster + Partners. The edges of the buildings will be made from handcrafted, textured granite, which becomes slimmer towards the top of the buildings, to give the impression of solidity at the base and transparency at the top. The project is under construction and expected to be completed in 2015.

Olympic torch designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have curated a Design Museum exhibition that examines over 20 pieces of unfinished work. Called In the Making, the show will feature a range of objects, from the £2 coin to a cricket bat, captured halfway through the manufacturing process. The exhibition runs from 22 January-4 May.

3 “K” LINE branded office Office fit out specialist The Interiors Group has completed a 2,000sq m fit out for “K” Line (Europe), a subsidiary of Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, on the 6th floor of 200 Aldersgate in London. Working with CBRE, the practice created a Cat B design animated by splashes of red, black and white to match the company’s corporate colours. The offices are predominantly open plan with a breakout space for informal meetings, and include a glass partitioned, 18-person meeting room with video conferencing.

Funded by NVC-Lighting Chongqing, Energy Investment Real Estate, Sinosteel Investment Group and Zhongxun Group, the development is one of three that aims to revitalise the region’s economy. The first phase, Zhongxun Times, will be completed in spring 2015, while the entire CBD will be occupied by 2017.

8 ON THE DOTTED LINE Overbury has launched a new type of partnering contract tailored for complex fit out projects, which aligns each party’s objectives to ensure collective accountability. The Alliance Agreement was developed in conjunction with Macquarie Group and unites client, contractor, supplier and consultant, each sharing project risk and reward equally. This, according to Overbury, introduces a legally binding no-blame culture that integrates the teams more efficiently, helps reduce budgets and encourages a more innovative approach.
