Introduction
The book series Co-creating Architecture takes a look at the Danish design studios that emerged during the 2000s and early 2010s. This generation of designers has blazed a trail in Danish architecture with their ability to offer sustainable answers to global, societal and social challenges in the shape of innovative and lasting design solutions. The key to this is co-creation: a collaborative approach that opens up the creative process, inviting users, decision-makers and experts from a wide range of fields to participate in the development of projects. The same openness characterizes their deliberate use of communication and new media as a powerful process tool that displaces any esoteric design jargon. The result is an architecture that can be used as an important strategic instrument in the development of society. Each book in the series Co-creating Architecture consists of three parts: an interview, in which the featured architects describe their view and use of co-creation as a tool; a catalogue of completed and upcoming projects; and, finally, an outside perspective on the design practice with an analysis of its processes and solutions.
StreetMekka Esbjerg, a dilapidated train depot, is transformed into a venue for youth culture. The transformation process was guided by a series of on site co-creative workshops.

EFFEKT / INTRODUCTION
This book introduces EFFEKT: ‘empathic designers’ who practice co-creation as an integral part of the design process, developing their projects in a constant dialogue with the world around them as a way to enhance the quality of the outcome. According to managing partners Sinus Lynge and Tue Hesselberg Foged, this is because co-creation is very effective when it comes to developing innovative solutions that can help change the world. Since setting up office in 2007, they have been developing projects in a constant dialogue with the world around them for the simple reason that it enhances the quality of the outcome. This open and communicative approach, which EFFEKT themselves call ‘empathic design’, is based on a concept developed in the Netherlands during the 1990s and 2000s. For the dialogue to work, you have to ask the right questions. Only then can you end up with the right answers in a project. Done properly, the creative dialogue can be a means of influencing and improving the world, says EFFEKT, and lead to socially sustainable environments for people.

‘Architecture doesn’t take place inside a closed room. It’s a close dialogue with the surrounding world when you design buildings and cities. In that sense, there is always an element of co-creation in the development of architecture.’ Sinus Lynge, EFFEKT

Lemvig Skatepark Sport & Leisure
Lemvig Skatepark is a prime example of how co-creation within architecture and placemaking can strengthen, develop and empower local communities. Local kids wished to transform a leftover spot in the industrial harbour into a skatepark. To allow for a wide range of users, the project was developed in close collaboration with different representatives of the city’s population. The design process transformed the original idea of mono-functional skate facility into a multifunctional 14

and recreational harbour park offering a wide range of functions for all age groups and different users in the local community. Organic pathways were shaped into a skatepark, while pockets between the pathways were programmed with a variety of recreational functions. Citizens of Lemvig took part in the creation of ideas as well as the actual construction of the park. The entire process of designing and constructing the skatepark took no more than 16 weeks.
In a very short space of time, the facility has become a focal point, not only for locals from Lemvig but also for skaters from across the region.
